PART FORTY-FOUR:

Madam Pomfrey shot a distressed look at Genevieve. “Settle down, girl! You’re going to make yourself ill!” She glanced over at Snape. “I need you to prepare some more of the Lavandula Potion, but not so strong this time. I don’t want her slipping out of consciousness for another three days again.”

Snape grudgingly left – his curiosity was evidently piqued by Genevieve’s accusation that whoever attacked her had also robbed her, but he had resigned himself that he could wait to inquire more about the situation when he returned. Madam Pomfrey fluffed Genevieve’s pillow a bit and instructed her finish her supper and relax until Snape returned with the potion.

As she sipped some weak broth and nibbled a piece of bland bread, Genevieve heard the creak of a door, followed by several whispering voices. Hush, cried one of the voices in an undertone. Do you want Madam Pomfrey to catch us? Genevieve recognized the voice right away and said, “Hermione – is that you?”

Three bodies emerged from thin air as Harry pulled off the Invisibilty Cloak that covered them.

“Oh, Genevieve!” cried Hermione, rushing to the side of the bed. “We were so worried about you when we saw that you were here! Had Neville not gotten his hand caught when the Fat Lady swung her portrait closed the other day, we might not have found out at all. We were visiting him the other day when we discovered you were here. We’ve tried to get in everyday to see you, but Madam Pomfrey always turns us away.”

“I’d noticed you’d been here,” said Genevieve, smiling warmly and motioning to the cards on the bedside table.

“Do you think you’ll be wanting those Chocolate Frogs?” asked Ron keenly, eyeing the boxes next to the cards.

“Honestly!” exclaimed Hermione, giving Ron a disapproving glare.

“We can’t stay long,” said Harry. “But, can you tell us how it happened? How were you hurt so badly?”

Genevieve told them what had happened – about taking a walk that night, wandering up to the Shrieking Shack, heading home and suddenly being attacked.

“I didn’t see a soul,” she said, sounding frustrated. “I heard a noise behind me, went to turn around and then everything went black. Next thing I knew, I was in the hospital.”

Hermione looked grave and Harry & Ron were puzzling over what Genevieve had just told them.

“Oh,” Genevieve added all of a sudden, “and my pendant has gone missing. I have no doubt that it was around my neck that night, but when I woke up here, it was gone. Snape said he didn’t notice I had it on when he found me, so …”

“ Snape?!” exclaimed Harry, Ron and Hermione, at the same time. Genevieve recounted the story of how Snape had rescued her.

“It’s impossible for me to imagine Snape rescuing anyone,” said Ron doubtfully. “Are you sure he wasn’t double-dealing you?”

“I know what you mean,” said Genevieve, “but I think he was telling the truth.”

“Yes,” agreed Hermione. “I know how we all feel about him, but I don’t think he’d attack Genevieve.” She stopped, but Harry & Ron could see the wheels still turning in her mind.

“What are you thinking, Hermione?” asked Harry inquisitively.

“I think I have a plan to find Genevieve’s pendant,” she proclaimed.

“And how would we go about that?” asked Ron as he hungrily munched on one of Genevieve’s Chocolate Frogs.

“Well, there’s a potion – it’s called the Desidera Potion – once you brew it, you’re able to look into it and see where the object you’re missing is located.”

“What’s the catch?” Harry asked skeptically.

“Well, some of the ingredient’s may be a little tricky to get,” said Hermione.

Ron gagged on the piece of chocolate he’d just bitten off. “We’re going to have to break into Snape’s office again, aren’t we?” He gave Hermione a glum look.

“Yes,” Hermione said. “But, that’s not all.”

Ron’s eyes began to bulge. “Blimey, what could be worse than that?”

“Er – there’s this little hitch, but I’m sure we can get around it,” she said, trying to sound convincing, but doing a very poor job of it.

“Out with it, Hermione!” bellowed Ron, spewing bits of chocolate on the floor.

“Shhhh!” hissed Hermione. “All right then, here it is. We need hair from both the owner of the pendant and the person who gave it to them.” She glanced over to Genevieve and said, “I’m assuming Professor Lupin gave it to you?”

Genevieve nodded and Harry looked out the window of the hospital room. “The full moon’s rising tonight, Hermione. You do realize what that means, don’t you?”

“Yes,” she said matter-of-factly, “but if were to find that pendant, which will lead us to Genevieve’s attacker, mind you, we’ve got to do this tonight!”

“You’re crazy, you know that, right?” said Ron, feeling defeated.

Genevieve piped up, “I can’t have you three getting into trouble and putting yourselves in danger over this.” She pleaded with them, but Hermione was resolved that they were going to go through with it.

“We’ve done stuff like this before,” Harry assured her, but the look on his face proved that he could use some assurance of his own.

<img src=
