Part 26~

The sun has set two hours ago in Paris. As the December chill settles further over the city, Kyle and Serena sit huddled under a blanket on the bench in the courtyard gazing at the stars above. The city throws up too much light pollution to see any but the brightest stars in the sky, so Kyle tells Serena about the constellations you can see in the desert outside Roswell.

A few blocks away, Maria finally finishes her shift and strolls out of the restaurant, not looking forward to the chill she knows will greet her. She’s surprised when Michael steps forward and drapes his arm around her. “Michael. What are you doing here?”

“Just thought I’d meet you and walk you home.” He smiles and guides her across the street. He sure as hell isn’t gonna tell her he’s been sitting outside waiting for her for two and a half hours.

“That’s so sweet.” She smiles back at him and lets him envelop her with his warmth.

Back at their apartment, Max and Liz sit on the floor of the living room facing each other, their legs stretched out in front of them in a V so that their feet meet as they play Go Fish. Max keeps insisting that she’s cheating with her mind reading abilities as they laugh and joke around, playing footsie with each other while they play cards.

“No fair! You’re cheating again.” Max laughs as he throws Liz the two 9s he has in his hand. But his laughter lodges in his throat when sees Liz’s cards fall out of her hand and he looks up at her face. Her eyes are open wide and she looks like she’s just been frightened by something. “Liz?” He drops his cards to the ground and moves forward to touch her face. “Liz, what’s wrong?” He searches her eyes for some sort of sign that she’s ok and she suddenly focuses her gaze on him before jerking back and leaping to her feet.

“Shit! God, how could I…” She looks frantically around the room, for what, Max doesn’t know and he gets up to his feet. “What was I thinking? Dammit!” He watches as she quickly goes to the front closet and yanks the door open, pulling their bag of weapons out and dropping it on the floor. She’s extremely agitated as she begins to look around for something else.

“Liz…what’s going on?” Max is instantly worried now, following Liz’s movements helplessly.

She stops and looks at him as if just realizing that he’s in the room with her. “Isabel…something’s wrong. Something’s happened to her and Jesse.” Walking away from him suddenly, she runs into her bedroom and reemerges with her radio and she turns the dial to their common channel.

“Everyone…get back home now. Kyle, check the perimeter. Everyone else, watch your step…we have potential visitors.” She says into it before throwing it down on the couch and walking over to grab the bag.

“What happened?” Max asks her as he finally realizes what she’s doing and moves to help her get their weapons ready.

“I don’t know. I just touched on her mind for a moment before I lost her. She was panicked…running. Something’s happened and we have no way of contacting them.” She struggles with a box of ammo and when she can’t get it open, she throws it down on the couch in frustration. “Dammit!” Reaching up to run her hands through her hair, she closes her eyes and takes a deep breath trying to calm herself. God, Isabel and Jesse are in trouble and she was too busy playing footsie with Max to notice. All of her doubts and thoughts of Max being a distraction come flooding back and she curses herself, silently and out loud, for the lapse.

Serena rushes into the apartment and immediately sees the guns strewn all over the living room. She sees the look on Liz’s face and walks straight back to her bedroom.

Max hands Liz the box of ammo that she couldn’t open and she grabs it from him, angrily loading the gun she’s holding. She’s pissed at herself and Max isn’t sure why.

“Liz, this isn’t your fault.” Max tries to calm her down from the agitated state she’s in just as Maria and Michael rush through the door.

“Not my fault? Of course it’s my fault…and yours! We’ve been all lovey dovey while they’ve been running for God knows how long! I should have been more aware...but I was distracted. God, what was I thinking? I knew I shouldn’t have started this…thing…up between us again.” She storms from the living room back to the bathroom, leaving Max devastated and shocked.

He looks helplessly over at Maria and Michael and they give him matching looks of sympathy. “What’s going on, Max?”

He explains to them what’s happened as best as he can and looks down at the ground, at the boxes of ammo and guns littering the floor and couch. Pushing the pain from Liz’s words to the back of his mind, he gets back to work on the guns. His sister is in trouble…he needs to get his shit together and figure out how to help her.

Maria rushes back to check on Liz, but when she reaches the bathroom door, it opens suddenly and Liz steps out saying, “They’re in Jaures…safe, I think.” She continues walking past Maria into the living room and continues. “She’s trying to figure out how to contact us without getting too close.” Walking into the kitchen, she pulls out a Metro map from one of the drawers and spreads it on the table. She looks up at Maria and asks, “Can you radio Kyle, see what the situation outside is?”

Maria nods and unclips her radio, walking to the far side of the living room and calling for Kyle.

As everyone gathers around the kitchen table, Liz points to the middle of the map. “Ok, we can assume that they started out at Champs Elysees. So they went north and are now here, in Jaures.” She points to the northeast corner of the map. “It looks like they took the 8 and just hopped over onto the 5. But they can’t stay on there or they’ll come to a dead end and have to circle back, unless they head back south. Their options right now are the 2 and the 5 south. I doubt they’d get back on the 8 toward where they came from.” She studies the map for another minute before looking up. “Any ideas?” Her gaze lands briefly on Max, but she quickly looks away…avoiding the painful look in his eyes.

Maria pulls out a chair and says, “Kyle says so far its all clear. He’s going up to the roof.” At Liz’s nod, she looks down at the map. “Ok, let’s think. Isabel would try to go somewhere she knows, right? I mean, she probably doesn’t even think that we know anything’s wrong at this point since they’re not scheduled to get off work for another couple of hours.”

“So, somewhere Isabel knows…that narrows it down.” Michael says sarcastically.

Liz shoots him a look that would freeze boiling water before studying the map again. There are just too many options for possible routes they could take, there’s no way to try to catch up with them that way.

“What about Ile Saint-Louis? It’s central…lots of people…and they go there almost every night for the sunset.” Serena offers. “Also, it would be just close enough for radio contact.”

Liz nods her head and says, “Could be.” She looks at Maria and asks, “What’s the name of that hotel in Montmartre?”

“The Ermitage?” Maria offers.

“Right. Can you take Serena and go get us some rooms and wait for us?” Liz sees that both of them are about to protest and she holds her hand up. “It’s the most logical choice, you know that. Serena, I’m not putting you in any more danger than I have to and someone has to be with you. Maria, she’s gonna need you.” Liz gives her a meaningful look and Maria nods, a somber expression settling on her face as she looks over to Michael.

The room becomes quiet and Liz clears her throat before saying, “We need to pack. Maria and Serena can take a couple suitcases each with them. Keep your own pack light…gun, radio, ID, batteries and money. We’re not coming back here so don’t leave anything revealing.”

The reality of the situation has suddenly fallen over the room and everyone mutely looks at each other before each going their own way. Liz watches them go in silence before folding up the map and checking the drawers for anything they need. She picks up her radio and walks out on the balcony, calling for Kyle. “Kyle, what’s the situation?”

“All clear as far as I can see. I’m on the roof across the street.” Kyle says.

Liz looks up and sees Kyle’s head peeking over the top of the taller building across the way. “Ok, come back in…and be careful.”

She clicks the radio off and watches from the balcony as Kyle suddenly appears around the corner, sticking close to the side of the buildings as he moves. When he walks in, he hugs Liz and asks, “What’s going on?”

“Isabel and Jesse are in trouble. Serena and Maria are going up north while the rest of us try to find Isabel and Jesse. You better go back and help Serena pack.”

Kyle pulls back and looks at Liz when he hears the strain in her voice. “We’ll be ok…we’ve done this before. Isabel and Jesse knew the risks, so I hope you’re not blaming yourself for this.”

“I know, I just should have known sooner…that’s all.” Liz looks down at the floor and sees the scattered cards from her and Max’s discarded game of Go Fish.

Kyle looks down at the cards, too, knowing she and Max were up here all afternoon. “You’re not all-knowing, Liz. Things happen…and we’ll deal with it. So, you were having some fun for the first time in years…so what? You can’t be responsible for all of us all the time.” He tilts her face up with his hand. “We’re big kids. And you deserve to be happy, just like the rest of us.” He can guess that she’s feeling guilty for spending time with Max when she thought she should be out keeping an eye on all of them.

“I’m happy when I know all of you are safe. I’ve been…distracted…and I should have known better. I did know better.” She takes a deep breath and pushes Kyle toward the hallway. “Go. Help Serena pack.”

She watches him head back toward the hallway, but doesn’t see Max…who was standing outside his room listening…walk back in his room.

She walks back to her room and folds up a small stack of clothes and essentials before bringing them into Serena and Kyle’s room.

She watches as they quietly toss things onto the bed and sort through their belongings and says, “Serena, can I…before you go…can I check you and the baby?”

They both stop and look at Liz, then each other. Liz can see the pain Kyle feels at leaving Serena on her own and her heart aches for them.

“Yah.” Serena says softly. “Where do you want me?”

“Just sit on the bed…that’ll be fine.” Liz tells her as she walks over to her. “I got some books…I’ll give them to Maria.” The fact that only Maria might be around to help with the birth hangs over them, unspoken, and Serena nods.

Liz kneels on the floor and places her hands gently over Serena’s flat stomach. She looks up at Serena hesitantly and says, “I’ve never done this…but I think…I think you need to look at me.” Images and feelings of Max connecting with her flood her mind and she tries to push the emotions back and concentrate on what he had done to form the connection.

Serena nods and takes a deep breath, looking into Liz’s eyes. As Kyle looks on, he sees both Serena and Liz look as if they’re falling into a trance. He’s vaguely aware of Max standing in the doorway watching, but he can’t tear his eyes away from the almost-statues in front of him. Their breathing is matched perfectly and they don’t even blink as they stare into each other’s eyes.

The seconds tic by so slowly that Kyle feels like screaming. Suddenly Liz jerks her head back and Kyle sees Serena snap out of her daze. “Liz.” Serena whispers, her eyes wide with what looks like horror to Kyle. “Oh God.” She swallows hard before bolting off the bed and running into the bathroom where they can hear her vomiting.

“What’s wrong with her?” Kyle demands as he looks down at Liz.

Liz shakes her head at him and says, “She’s ok, Kyle. The baby is fine. I think…I think she saw things…from me. I couldn’t help it.” She closes her eyes and tries to sort through all the images and feelings she got from Serena, making an effort to push out the more personal ones and focus on the baby.

“Oh.” Kyle looks over at Max in the doorway before he’s finally able to make his feet move and walk across the hall to help Serena.

Liz tries to stand up from the floor, but her legs are shaky and her knees start to buckle. Max moves quickly and catches her before she can fall back down and holds her up, steadying her. She looks up at him gratefully before looking away and taking a step back.

“Are you ok?” Max asks her.

She nods he head slightly as she leans against the dresser, looking down at the pale green carpet at her feet. He doesn’t say anything more to her and she’s grateful. She knows she hurt him earlier, but she has too much to think about right now. She doesn’t even know what she would say to him.

Kyle and Serena walk back in the room and Kyle can feel the tension in the air between Max and Liz. He’s looking straight at her and she’s looking at the floor. He feels sorry for Max...Serena told him what Liz said earlier.

When Liz looks up and sees them, she says, “The baby is ok. She’s perfectly healthy…and I’m guessing it’ll be several months before she’s born.”

Kyle smiles and asks, “She?” as he looks over at Serena.

“Yup, you’re having a baby girl.” Liz tells them with a small smile.

Serena puts her hands on her stomach and looks up at Liz. “Thank you.” She whispers before looking over at Kyle, who has his arms wrapped around her.

Feeling embarrassed at intruding on this obviously private moment, Liz pushes away from the dresser and walks out the door with Max following behind. She stops in her room and grabs a small backpack from her bed and goes out to the living room. Maria and Michael are there waiting and she starts packing up her backpack.

Max walks out of his bedroom with a small bag of things and hands it to Maria to pack in one of her larger suitcases before grabbing a gun from the floor and some ammo to put in his pack. He grabs his coat from the closet and pulls it on after putting another gun in the back of his waistband. Clipping his radio to his belt, he looks around for any last minute things they might be forgetting.

As Liz puts on her coat, she looks at Michael and Maria, then Serena and Kyle as they drag out two suitcases from their bedroom. “There’s a small door in the furnace room. It leads to a crawlspace that’ll take you into the building behind us. You should come out at a hallway on the second floor. The staircase is on the left, take it downstairs and use the phone in the lobby to call a cab. We’ll bring up the rear.”

She picks up two guns from the couch and puts one in the back of her pants, the other in the inside pocket of her coat. “Ok, let’s go.” She says as she pulls a hat over her head and tucks her hair in.

Liz leads them down the hall and squeezes around the furnace, picking up a crowbar she has stored there and prying off the panel in the back. When it’s open, she checks the crawlspace before coming back out. “It’s a tight fit.” She tells them as she steps aside and walks back out to the living room to check out the courtyard.

Michael goes first, throwing their bags through the opening before squeezing around the furnace and crawling through the opening himself. Maria follows him, then Serena and Kyle. When they’re all through, Max walks out to get Liz. “They’re through.” He tells her.

She nods and takes one last look around before walking back toward the furnace. “You go first…it’ll be easier for me to shut the door behind us.”

Max nods and inches around the furnace and crawls through the back. He crouches down in the small space and watches Liz grab a flashlight from her pocket before walking into the furnace room and closing the door. She joins him in the crawlspace and moves in front of him to lead the way. They have to crouch down because the ceiling is only about four feet high, but they quickly reach the opening into the next building and crawl through the access panel the others left open for them.

When they reach the first floor, Liz turns her flashlight off because there’s enough moonlight streaming in through the front windows to provide light to see. She sees the others standing by the elevators and assumes they already called for a cab. As Max and Liz walk over to them, Maria steps away from Michael and pulls Liz in for a hug.

“You take care of yourself. I expect to see you later tonight.” Maria says to her.

Liz nods her head and rubs Maria’s back soothingly. “I’ll do my best. Take care of Serena and stay out of sight.” She pulls back and looks in Maria’s eyes. “If we’re not there by evening tomorrow…you’re on your own.” Pulling an envelope from her jacket pocket, she hands it to Maria. “This is enough money to last you for a while. Enough to get you back to Roswell.”

Tears spill down Maria’s face as she takes the envelope and nods. “It won’t come to that. Stop talking like I’m never gonna see you again.”

Liz forces a smile on her face and hugs Maria again. “Of course you will…I just want you to be prepared.” She looks at Michael as she pulls away from Maria and he comes over to pull Maria close to him.

Liz turns to Serena and says, “I’m sorry you had to see that stuff earlier.” as she places her hand over Serena’s stomach.

Serena hugs her and whispers, “It’s ok…please be careful.”

Liz nods and says, “You too.” She looks over and sees that Kyle and Maria are saying their goodbyes just as a cab pulls up to the curb outside.

She pulls away from Serena and says, “It’s time.” She stays inside with Max as Michael and Kyle help them out to the cab with the bags and say their last goodbyes. Turning away to give them privacy, she hopes that Serena was right and they can find Isabel and Jesse without any trouble.

She turns to Max and asks, “What do you think? Should we go down together, or split up into two groups?”

Max has been watching Liz say her goodbyes and admired how she kept herself together, even trying to reassure Maria as Maria cried. “I think we can go down together and split up when we get there.”

Liz nods and says, “Ok.” as Michael and Kyle walk back inside.

“Alright.” Max says to them. “Let’s stick to side streets as much as we can. We better go.” He walks toward the front door, the other three following.

As they make their way through the dark street, they all keep an eye on their surroundings in silence. They hear the noise of the crowds get louder as they get closer to the river and just before emerging from an alley, Max says, “Michael, Kyle, you go first. Head toward the east once you cross the bridge, we’ll stick to the west. Keep your eye out for Isabel and Jesse…I’m sure they’ve changed their appearance.”

“Right.” Michael says as he and Kyle change their appearance, making their hair longer and changing the color before they split off and make their way toward the bridge. It’s a clear night and they’re lucky it’s not raining. Street vendors and musicians line the streets and bridge and the crowd of people makes it easier for them to become invisible.

Liz takes off her hat and stuffs it into her pack before changing her hair into short, black spikes tipped with purple. She changes the color of her coat and wipes her hand across her face, making herself look like a young street punk.

When she looks up at Max, he asks, “Isn’t that a little obvious?”

“Obvious is good. The most obvious person is always the first one you overlook.” She tells him. “We’d be more exposed if it looked like we were trying to hide.”

He nods and swipes his hand over his jeans, making them ripped, then turns his hair blonde with blue spikes. Once they’re satisfied that they look different, they walk slowly toward the bridge, hands stuck in each other’s back pockets acting like two young lovers. They try to keep smiles on their faces as they walk and pretend to be talking and laughing together while watching everyone around them closely.

Max is impressed when he sees that no one even looks at them…Liz was right. They don’t exactly blend in, but they look like they belong there. On the other side of the bridge, they head west and Liz glances over to see Michael and Kyle in the other direction, standing with a group of people watching some musicians. She doesn’t see any sign of Isabel and Jesse yet as she and Max wander around and pretend to look at the different street vendor offerings.

Suddenly, Max pulls her over to a railing overlooking the river and leans in close. “Over to my left, behind the lady with the red jacket.” He whispers in her ear.

She looks over gradually and sees Isabel sitting at a table sipping something from a paper cup as the steam rises up. Their eyes meet briefly before Isabel looks at the man next to her. It’s Jesse. Liz hadn’t noticed because Isabel gave him a huge mop of curly hair. Liz watches as Isabel nonchalantly looks down at the table in front of her, it’s covered with bags, but Liz sees a radio antenna peeking out from the side.

She turns Max so that she’s leaning back against the railing and he’s pressed up to the front of her and she slowly unclips the radio from his waistband, bringing it up to hang from the breast pocket of his shirt. She clicks on the 2-way conversation button as she leans in to kiss Max’s neck, looking over at Isabel and nodding slightly.

She moves her face in front of Max’s chest and speaks into the radio in a whisper as Max leans in and brings both arms around Liz, playing with the spikes in her hair, hiding her face from view. “Were you followed?” She asks.

Isabel leans over slightly and turns her head toward Jesse, saying, “I don’t think so, but I’m not sure. We’ve been here for over an hour and I haven’t seen anything.”

“Meet us at the St. Lazare station. Buy two tickets for the Montmartre train and we’ll meet you on it. Go now, we’ll watch for anyone following you.” Liz turns her head to see if anyone is looking at them, and seeing nothing she glances back at Isabel and Jesse to see her finishing her drink. She watches as Isabel slowly gets up and leads Jesse behind some vendors in the direction of the closest Metro station.

Depressing another button on the radio, she says, “We got them. We’re meeting at the St. Lazare station…move slowly.” She slides the radio down to Max’s pocket and leans up to hug Max, looking over his shoulder in the direction Isabel and Jesse went. “Let’s go.” She whispers before pulling away.

As they slowly walk hand in hand, weaving their way through the crowd and small vending stands, Liz pulls a pair of headphones from her pack and casually puts them on, connecting them to the jack in the radio and zipping her jacket up to cover the radio at her waist. There’s a small microphone clipped to the cord at her chest and she starts bobbing her head as if listening to music as they walk.

“We’re right behind you.” She hears Kyle say. “Everything’s clear.”

As they get closer to the station, she thinks they might actually have pulled this off when she hears a frantic Isabel say, “Liz, I think you’ve been spotted. We just passed two guys…the ones we ran into earlier…and they were looking back in your direction.”

“Did they see you?” Liz asks.

“No.”

“Keep moving.” Liz tells her and searches the crowd until she sees who Isabel was talking about. Two men, one talking into a cell phone or radio, she can’t tell, are about fifty feet in front of them to the right. A pair of eyes meet hers and she knows they’ve seen her. Zeroing in on his mind for a split second, she knows they’ve only tagged her. They still haven’t seen, or recognized, Max.

“Kyle, circle around us to the left and get to the station.” Liz says, trying not to move her lips.

“Liz…” Kyle says, but Liz interrupts him.

“Just do it, Kyle.” Liz says forcefully before letting go of Max’s hand.

“Get out of here.” She says as she turns away from Max, pretending to fiddle with her radio as she walks slowly away from him.

“What?”

“They haven’t recognized you yet. Go.” Liz says.

“But…” Max tries to protest and reach for her arm, but she turns and punches him across the face and yells, “Get the fuck away from my shit or I’m callin’ the cops!” And she takes off, walking quickly away from him…away from the station.

She sees the two men move toward her out of the corner of her eye and she hopes she can divert their attention long enough for the others to get away. Breaking into a run, she weaves in and out of people as she makes her way to a less crowded area. She can feel the two men running after her and knows they’ve probably called for backup already.

She hears everyone talking through her headphones and she asks, “Is Max with you?”

Kyle answers, “Yes…Liz, what are you…”

“Get away from here…now.” She orders and immediately hears several voices joining Kyle’s. Whipping the headphones down to her neck, she jumps over a bench and turns the next corner and keeps running. She can feel them gaining on her and knows that she won’t get away from them this way. Making another turn, she runs between two buildings into an alley and throws herself behind a stack of boxes.

She tries to control her breathing as she says, “Fuck, fuck, fuck…” under her breath and pulls her two guns out. Crouching down, she hears running footsteps enter the alley and keep going before stopping about twenty feet away. She hears the men talking to each other and she peeks out from around the boxes to see them looking around the alley, wondering where she went. They’re both looking up, thinking that she climbed up a fire escape, and they’re both holding guns pointed to the ground.

They must not be in very good shape because she sees one bend over and balance on his knees, out of breath from running and this is when she makes her move. Quietly, she steps out from behind the boxes and stands just inside the alleyway entrance pointing both guns at them. They haven’t seen her yet so she takes a few steps closer, clearing her throat to get their attention.

They both whip around to see her there and they raise their guns at her.

“Put your guns down.” She says.

They smile and one of them says, “I don’t think so. You put yours down.”

She smiles back and says, “I don’t think so.”

They stand facing each other for what seems like minutes, but can only be seconds before Liz says, “I guess we have ourselves a standoff.”

“Just put your guns down and we won’t hurt you. We just want you to answer a few questions.” The other agent says to her.

She knows what they’re thinking now…and she grins when she realizes there isn’t any backup coming. They’re both thinking they can talk her into putting her guns down…that she’s just a small girl and probably can’t shoot anyway. She laughs at that and they both look at her puzzled.

“What’s so funny?” The agent on the right asks.

“I’m reading your mind.” She says with a grin and watches matching looks of disbelief cross their faces.

“Right. We know all about you…you can’t pull that shit on us.” He says.

She shrugs and says, “Well, since I know you don’t have any backup coming…I can stand here all night. Oh, and let me assure you, I may be just a small girl…but I can shoot.”

She grins even wider when she sees the color drain from their faces and says to the man on the right, “So, do Melissa and Jake know what you do for a living? That you hunt down innocent people and torture them?”

He takes a step back and says, “Get out of my head, bitch.” Then he says to his partner, “They didn’t say she could get in our heads.”

“Shut up.” The other man tells him, not taking his eyes off of Liz. “You’re wrong.” He says to her. “I’ve already called for backup.”

She searches his mind and knows that he did call someone, but it was only his superior. We're going to Paris next year, so I got all my info from maps and stuff that we've been gathering for our trip. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Part 27~

Staring down at the two men on the ground in front of her, Liz debates her options regarding their fate. They’re the only two who know they’re in Paris but the thought of killing them in cold blood puts a bad taste in her mouth. The idea of taking them hostage flies across her mind momentarily, but that would be too complicated. What would they bargain for anyway…their freedom? There’s no way to ensure that. She’s never tried altering someone’s memories…so this probably wouldn’t be a good time to experiment.

“Should we kill them?” Liz glances up at Max before looking back down at the agents. No one says anything and the silence is interrupted by loud, running footsteps coming around the corner.

Liz looks up and rolls her eyes as Kyle, Isabel and Jesse run toward them. “Christ, was it too much to ask that at least one of you to listen to what I said?” She was furious enough when Max and Michael showed up, blatantly disregarding her order to get away…now she’s just plain outraged that no one listened to her.

“Yah, well, we saved your ass. Don’t bother thanking us.” Michael sarcastically spits back at her.

“I didn’t need saving. I had everything under control.” She doesn’t bother looking up at him, keeping her eyes on the two prone figures on the ground. She hears him snort before raising her voice and saying, “What we need right now, Michael, is a decision on what to do with them, instead of hearing about your need for gratitude.”

Michael opens his mouth to argue, but Max puts his hand on his arm and shakes his head at him. “Not now.”

“Fine.” Michael says. “I say we kill them.”

Liz sees the two men flinch at Michael’s words and one of them looks up toward her. “Any other ideas?” She asks. “We can’t let them go with what they know. And if they go missing or turn up dead, it’ll raise red flags.” She glances over briefly at Kyle before Jesse speaks up.

“What other options are there?” Jesse asks, not seeing much else to do besides kill them or let them go. “If those are the only two, then I say we need to kill them.”

Isabel looks over at Liz and reluctantly says, “I agree. I don’t see any other way.”

“Max, what do you think?” Liz looks over at him.

The two men stir on the ground and struggle to sit up, when they raise their heads and find no less than eight guns pointed at their head. “Hey…we’re not gonna do anything.” The agent on the left raises his hands in the air and the other follows suit. “I…It’s just that I have a suggestion. You know, as opposed to killing us.”

“Shut up.” Michael tells him and steps closer to him.

“Wait, let’s hear what he has to say.” Isabel says. She really doesn’t want to kill them, but Liz is right…they can’t just let them go, either.

The man looks at Isabel gratefully and says, “I was just thinking that you could…” He suddenly stops talking and a blank look comes over his face as he stares straight ahead. His partner has also seemed to fall into some kind of catatonic state and Michael says, “Yah? We could what?”

When neither agent responds, Liz looks up at everyone’s confused faces and her eyes fall on Kyle. He has his eyes closed and his lips are moving slightly…like he whispering to himself. She lets her arms fall in relief and she takes a step back saying, “Everyone put your guns away.”

The others look at Kyle also, then back to the men. “What the hell’s going on?” Michael asks.

“Just put your guns away and step back, Michael. Please, just do this.” Liz looks at him, then back to Kyle. His face is breaking out in a sweat and his whispering comes faster.

Everyone tucks their guns away and steps away from the two men as they keep a wary eye on them and suddenly they drop to the ground, unconscious. Kyle stumbles back and looks around. Seeing the two men on the ground, he says, “Ok…come over here.” and he walks away from the two men about fifteen feet, indicating that everyone should join him.

They reluctantly follow, still keeping an eye on the agents and Kyle says, “When they start to wake up, Michael, you and Jesse take off out of the alley. The rest of you, act like you’ve just run back here and follow my lead.”

Liz thinks she knows what Kyle’s done and she nods in agreement just as the two men start to stir. “Go, now!” Kyle whispers to Michael and Jesse.

“What the…” One of the men says as he begins to raise his head and Kyle leads Max, Liz, and Isabel running toward them.

“Hey! Are you guys alright?” Kyle kneels down beside them as they wake up.

The agent on the left looks up at Kyle, confused, and sees three other people running toward him. “What happened to those guys? I think we were mugged.”

“We saw them take off that way.” Kyle turns and points to Michael and Jesse’s retreating figures just as they turn the corner. “Are you ok? We saw you walk back here and overheard those guys saying they were gonna rip you off.” He looks at them concerned, and says, “Did they steal anything?”

They both look around and pat their breast pockets. “No…I think…I think you must have scared them off. Thank you.” The man on the right says.

“No problem.” Kyle says as he stands up. “This city just isn’t safe at night. My girlfriend here was mugged last week. I just hate to see it happen to someone else.” He puts his arm around Liz and does his best impression of a concerned citizen.

The two men struggle to their feet and look at the four of them gratefully as the one on the left laughs slightly and says, “Believe it or not, we’re U.S. FBI agents. We can take it from here. Thank you for coming to help us.” He reaches out to shake Kyle’s hand.

“I’m just glad we could help. Like I said, I’d hate to see something bad happen to anyone else.” Kyle enthusiastically shakes his hand back.

“You kids be careful. Are you here on vacation?” The man on the right asks.

“Yah…Christmas break.” Liz tells him.

“Well, thank you…again.” He says as he turns to his partner. “I guess we should go report this.”

“Yah.” His partner turns to walk away and looks back at them. “Hope the rest of your vacation isn’t so eventful.” He smiles and waves as they both walk away out of the alley.

Liz grabs Kyle’s arm and leads the others in the opposite direction. “Thank you.” She looks up at him and rubs his arm.

He just nods at her and keeps walking…the throbbing in his head overwhelming him. Max and Isabel walk behind them, exchanging puzzled looks. Max remembers Liz saying something about Kyle’s powers but also that he wouldn’t work on them or even talk about them. He can pretty much guess why now. It’s too much of a reminder of what Tess used to do. He just hopes that whatever Kyle did to them will last long enough to make it out of the country.

A couple of streets over, Michael and Jesse catch up to them and Michael looks around frantically. “What happened? Where’d they go?”

“They left. It’s ok, Michael…we’ll talk about it once we’re out of here.” Max tells him.

Michael looks confused and sees that Kyle doesn’t looks so good. “What’s wrong with him?”

“He’s…drained. We’ll talk about it later.” Max insists and is glad to see that Michael’s finally going to let it go for now. He looks around and sees that they’re still all alone and he quickly changes his hair back to normal. Liz sees him and remembers, and she does the same. They silently make their way to the nearest Metro station and start on their journey toward Montmartre.

Once they switch trains to the one that will take them north to the district best known for its young, bohemian artists and lively nightlife, they’re able to relax slightly. Liz sits with Kyle, letting him rest against her as he sleeps. She knew he would pull through. She knew he had the power to alter people’s thoughts, and suspected that he practiced using it when no one was paying attention. But she didn’t want to ask him, she wanted him to decide to do it himself. And she knew he would…deep down, she knew he would. Smiling, she rests her head back on the seat and closes her eyes.

During their ride, Max explains to Michael and Jesse what Kyle did to the two agents. Michael is actually speechless when he hears about Kyle’s newly revealed power and he’s silent for the rest of the ride.

Without anyone to talk to, Max sits back in his seat and looks up toward Liz sitting in the row in front of him. She has her head back and eyes closed, resting. It’s been a hellish day, and it’s far from over. They need to get out of the country as soon as possible, maybe off the continent. He looks at his watch to see that it’s 11pm. Twenty four hours ago, he and Liz were making love. Closing his eyes, he thinks about what happened today between him and Liz. It started out so wonderfully, and ended so horribly.

She regrets starting a relationship with him. Or this thing as she put it. She told Kyle that she thought of him as a distraction. Thing…distraction…thing…distraction. Those words fling themselves violently around his head and his heart shatters slowly at the thought that she meant everything she said. If she chooses to pull away from him…again…he truly doesn’t think that he’ll survive it. Ok, he’ll probably survive, but he’s not going to sit back and just let her walk away from him…from them…again. Her overdeveloped sense of responsibility isn’t going to be used as an excuse to push him away.

Confident in his resolve to make Liz see things in a different light, he sits up straighter and goes over their options for once they reach Montmartre.

Liz sighs as she fidgets in her seat. She can feel Max practically throwing his thoughts at her and she’s trying to block them from getting through the best she can. He’s thinking about the things she said to him earlier and as they replay in her mind she cringes. She was so harsh and she knows that she probably sent him through a loop when she carelessly struck out at him. Speaking of striking…she turns in her seat and peeks around, getting his attention. “Sorry…about hitting you back there.” She says as she sees the developing bruise on his jaw line.

He looks at her a moment and says, “I think I’ll live.”

She looks down to the floor at his cheerless tone and she nods, turning back around in her seat. Taking in a shaky breath, she runs her hand through her hair. She was right. She was right to be wary of getting involved with Max again. Everything was fine when they were just friends and within 24 hours, their entire world tilted. How could she have let herself be ruled by her hormones? She should have known. That’s what it all boils down to; she was too busy reveling in her feelings for Max to notice something was off. Normally, she would have sensed it right away. As much as she hates the idea of giving up her newfound closeness with Max, she doesn’t see any way around it. If something had happened to any of them, it would have killed her knowing she was responsible.

As they pull into the station, it’s approaching midnight. It’s been a long day and everyone drags themselves off the train. As they call for two cabs, Max sees Liz struggling to keep Kyle up so he goes to Kyle’s other side to support him. Kyle’s face is pale and he can barely hold himself upright. “You’ll be fine after you get some rest, Kyle.” Max tells him.

When they arrive at the hotel, Max pretty much has to carry Kyle inside and sit him in a chair in the lobby as everyone else falls into their own chairs. Liz goes to the front desk and asks them to call Ms. Salt’s room for her and let her know that Ms. Temple is here to see her. Walking back over to the group, Liz kneels down next to Kyle’s chair and feels his forehead. “Kyle.” She whispers. His face looks so pale and his eyes are barely open.

Keeping a hand on Kyle’s shoulder, Liz stands up just as Maria comes barreling down the stairs and straight into Michael’s arms. After kissing him senseless, she releases him and looks around at the others. When her gaze falls on Kyle, she gasps and runs to him, her mouth dropped open. “What happened to him?” She looks up at Liz in panic.

“He’ll be ok…he kind of…wore himself out.” Liz shrugs her shoulders and looks past Maria to the desk clerk before saying, “We’ll talk later.”

Maria nods and pulls Liz in for a brief hug, seeing Isabel and Jesse over her shoulder. “I’m glad you guys are ok.” She tells them and stands back from Liz. “Well, follow me.” She turns and grabs Michael’s arm before heading up the stairs. Turning around, she sees Max and Jesse struggling to carry Kyle up the stairs and she says, “Sorry, the elevator’s broken. But we’re only on the second floor.” She notices the desk clerk watching them strangely as they practically drag Kyle up the stairs and she says, “He had too much to drink tonight.” The clerk nods in understanding and gets back to his work.

When Max and Jesse carry Kyle into his room, Serena rushes over to them. “Oh my God…Kyle. What happened?” She helps them put him onto the bed and she sits next to him, feeling his face.

“He used his powers…he’s just drained. After some sleep, he’ll be good as new.” Max tells her as he stands up.

“Are you sure? You guys never look like this after using your powers.” She looks up at him.

“I don’t think Kyle used this particular power very much before…he didn’t know his limits. And I’m sure. He’ll be fine.” Max reassures her before leaving them alone and walking out to the hall.

He sees Maria and asks, “Which room’s mine?” When she points down the hall, he heads in that direction and falls on the bed as soon as he walks in. Just as he’s contemplating a shower, the door opens and he looks up to see Liz.

“Oh…um…” She looks back out and into the hall before looking back at him. “I guess they only got four rooms…they probably assumed…um…I can go down and see if they have another room available.” She starts to turn around before Max calls out to her.

“Liz, wait.”

When she turns back around, he asks, “What are you doing Liz? What’s this all about?” She doesn’t answer him, instead looking at something that’s apparently become fascinating on the carpet. “Liz, come here.”

She bites her lip and slowly enters the room as the door shuts behind her. Max gets up off the bed and walks closer to her. “Talk to me.” He stops just in front of her.

Liz opens her mouth to speak, but nothing comes out so she takes a deep breath and tries again. “I…I’m sorry Max. I don’t think we should do this.”

“You don’t think we should do what?” He’s going to make her say it if he has to stand here all night.

“This.” She sweeps her arms from him back to her. “This…us.”

Nodding, he says, “Really. Because I was sure you thought it was a good idea last night…and this morning…and this afternoon…”

“Max, I…” She interrupts him, holding her hand up in front of her. “I know…but it became pretty clear today that…that you’re a distraction to me. A great distraction, but a distraction never the less.”

“And what exactly am I distracting you from?” He crosses his arms in front of him patiently.

“From keeping everyone safe.” She tells him in a tone that says he should know this already.

He acts as if he’s receiving a new piece of valuable information. “Oh…I see. I must have missed the memo telling us that you were the sole protector and savior of us all.” He nods in understanding.

“Max, don’t be ridiculous.”

“You’re calling me ridiculous? Are you listening to what you’re saying? Do you honestly believe that you have to spend the rest of your life protecting each and every one of us…with no life for yourself?”

“I’m not saying that. I…I have to be prepared, alert at all times. If I hadn’t been so busy mooning over you today, I would have known sooner that something was wrong.” Liz is beginning to get angry.

“And what if you had known? What would have been different? We’d still be standing right where we are.” He looks at his watch and says, “Only it would be 10:30 instead of 12:30.”

“Maybe…but that’s not the point.” She argues, her voice rising in frustration.

“Then what is?”

“My point is that something else could happen and if I’m not focused on what I should be focused on, someone could get hurt.”

“Don’t define yourself by your powers, Liz. Yes, they’re great and incredibly handy, but you might not have them forever. Did you think of that? What would happen if you didn’t have them? You’d be lost…and alone…with no sense of who you really are.”

She doesn’t know what to say to that but she’s not ready to give up her argument. She still thinks that she’s right. Instead, she looks down at the ground and says, “I’m tired, Max. And we’re obviously not going to agree on this tonight. Can we just…go to sleep?”

He looks at her for a few moments, then says, “You can stay in here.” And he walks back toward the bed.

She looks at the lone bed in the middle of the room and says, “Um…maybe I should sleep on the floor.”

He rolls his eyes at her and kicks his shoes off. “Suit yourself.” And he tosses a pillow onto the floor for her.

She looks at the pillow, offended that he didn’t offer to sleep on the floor, and when she looks up at him she sees him stripping out of his jeans and he says, “You’re more than welcome to join me.” before throwing his shirt off as well.

She’s speechless as she watches him dramatically pull down the covers and jump into bed with a sigh and put his hands behind his head. “Mmmm…it’s really comfortable.” He smirks at her.

At this point, she’s fuming at his arrogance and secretly cursing herself because she knows that everything he said was right. But she’s not quite ready to give in yet, so she grabs the blanket off the bed, leaving him with only a sheet and makes a bed for herself on the floor. She takes her boots off and lies down, burrowing under the heavy blanket…blocking out the chill in the room. “Max?”

“Yes?” He answers from the bed as he curls up in a ball to keep warm.

“Could you turn the light out?” She asks him with a smile.

He leans over and turns the lamp off before angrily jerking the sheet up to his neck. God, she’s stubborn. He knows that what he said hit a chord in her, but she’s so damn hard headed she’s not gonna give in. That’s fine…neither is he.

When Liz wakes up, the first thing she notices is that her back and neck are aching and she’s uncomfortable from sleeping in her clothes all night. She sits up and looks to see that Max is already out of bed. Stretching and rubbing the back of her neck, she glances toward the bathroom to see it empty. After going to the bathroom and splashing water on her face, she leaves and walks toward the sound of voices coming from the room next door.

She walks in and sees that everyone else is up already and she looks at her watch. 7:30am. “Good morning.” She greets everyone as she sits on the corner of the bed.

“Sleep well?” Max asks her and she shoots him a look that says she doesn’t think he’s amusing. It only earns her a smirk in response.

The room is silent as everyone notices the tension between Max and Liz. Oblivious, Michael say, “We were just discussing our next move.”

Liz nods her head and asks, “What have you come up with?”

Maria picks the paper up that she’s been writing on and says, “Well, here are the suggestions so far. Rome, Athens, Cairo, Johannesburg, and Mexico City.”

“Ok, well, I think it might be best if we get out of Europe all together. Africa might be good, maybe Johannesburg?” Liz says as she rubs her aching neck. “Has anyone been keeping an eye out around here…outside?”

“Um…not really last night, we were all beat. But Isabel and Jesse got up early and went downstairs to keep watch.” Maria says.

“We should get out of here as soon as possible. I was thinking the easiest thing to do would be to take a train to Brussels and catch a flight out of there. We can decide where we’re going on the way.” When no one protests, she stands up and says, “I’m gonna take a quick shower. Is everyone ready to go?”

Maria gets up and opens one of the suitcases, pulling out some clothes and toiletries for Liz. “I think so. We’ll meet you downstairs.”

Liz accepts the things Maria hands her and nods. “Sounds good. I’ll be 10 minutes.” She turns to Kyle and asks, “How are you feeling?”

“Good…better.” He says quietly and Liz nods, leaving the room.

When she’s gone, Maria looks over at Max and gives him a warning look. She doesn’t know what happened last night, but she knows Liz has thrown her walls back up. “What did you do to her?”

Max widens his eyes at looks at Maria in disbelief. “What did I do? Nothing she didn’t do to herself.” He gets up and storms into the hallway. Why was he being blamed for Liz’s attitude problem? They heard what she said to him yesterday. He’s not about to apologize for something he didn’t do. Sighing, he looks toward the room he and Liz slept in last night and walks slowly toward it.

When he walks in, he hears Liz in the bathroom brushing her teeth and he can feel the anger radiating off of her immediately. Good. Anger is good. As he makes his way toward the bathroom, the brushing stops and he knows she’s sensed him in the room. He reaches the doorway to the bathroom and she doesn’t acknowledge that he’s there. Leaning in the doorway, he says, “I can heal your neck.”

“I can heal my own neck.” She says shortly without looking at him. Leaning over, she turns on the water in the shower to let it warm up before turning back to him. “Do you mind?”

“Nope, go ahead.” He crosses his arms in front of him and continues to lean in the doorway.

Glaring at him, she knows he’s just trying to get her riled up, so she shrugs her shoulders and says, “Fine.” She leans against the counter and pulls her socks off before reaching down and unfastening her pants. Slowly, she pushes them down as she wiggles her hips and kicks them off. Quickly folding them, she pulls her shirt up and over her head and folds that, too. She sees Max shift out of the corner of her eye and smiles internally, thinking that he deserves any discomfort he must be in. Moving her hands to her back, she quickly unfastens her bra and lets it fall to the floor before looking in the mirror. It feels good to finally have it off and she sees the angry red lines in her skin from the elastic before she reaches up and massages her breasts.

Max almost chokes when Liz starts touching herself. What the hell was he thinking? Is there a reason he’s standing here torturing himself like this? It takes every ounce of will power he has to not attack her right now. As she continues to massage the ache in her breasts away, his gaze travels down her body just as she reaches down and slides her underwear off. He bites the inside of his cheek to hold back a groan that threatens to escape and she turns to him, her gaze falling on the evidence of his obvious arousal and slowly moving up to his face. A smile slowly appears on her face and he’s suddenly forgotten how to breathe, when she suddenly closes the door in his face and he hears the lock engage.

~TBC~

You're going to be the death of me.
Obi Wan Kenobi to Anakin Skywalker
Col Threadkiller is the coolest!<img src=http://www.roswell-orbs.com/smilies/coo ...

Part 28~

The northern French countryside speeds by outside the window of the high-speed Eurostar train as Liz looks over the information she gathered at a travel office before they left. Spread before her are brochures and maps of Cairo, Johannesburg and Mexico City. Thinking practically, Johannesburg would be the best place to go since they’d blend in well and English is the main language spoken there. They also have a well developed public rail system and a population over 4 million…the more people, the better.

Which makes Mexico City’s 20 million people very attractive. But Mexico makes Liz nervous…it’s a little too close to home. As she looks back out the window, she becomes lost in thoughts of her conversation with Max the night before. Was he right? Is she defining herself by these powers and what she can do with them? He said that she considered herself their sole protector and in a way, she thinks he’s right. It all started with future Max and after they rescued her from the FBI, it snowballed when Maria and Kyle decided to split from the group to go with her. They would have stayed with the others if it weren’t for her and the guilt of that knowledge made her vow to do anything she could to protect them.

Being their protector and leader came so naturally that she let it become who she is. Who else is she besides that? She’s not sure she even knows anymore. It’s how she’s lived for three years, almost four, and now having the others with them it’s hard to give up that part of herself…it’s hard to think of herself as anything else. Being with Max was almost like a mini vacation from her responsibilities. Is this what Max went through back in High School? She never realized the importance of his decision to give up on being a king…to give up being their undisputed leader.

She feels a presence beside her and turns to see that Isabel has come to sit next to her. “Hey Liz.”

“Hey Isabel. How’re you doing?” Liz asks her. She’s surprised at how well Isabel has taken the events of yesterday…how calm she was throughout and after.

“I’m fine. I wanted to know how you are. You’ve been…tense.”

Liz smiles and says, “Yah…a little. I’m sorry. About yesterday…I’m sorry I didn’t figure out earlier that you were in trouble.”

Isabel looks at her in confusion and asks, “How were you supposed to know? We couldn’t contact you. I thought we were gonna have to sit out there until after 10 and see if you all figured out we weren’t coming back. I was actually surprised to see you guys so soon.”

Liz shakes her head. “No, I should have known earlier. I sensed that something was wrong, but you were already on the run. We should have had better back up plans in place.”

“Liz, everything turned out fine. I don’t know how it could have turned out any better…even if you had known earlier. I didn’t even know what was going on until it was too late.” Isabel puts her hand over Liz’s and says, “I hope that’s not the reason you’ve been so stressed out.”

Liz studies Isabel and has to ask, “Did Max send you over here?”

“Max? No, he hasn’t really said much about yesterday. Liz, what’s wrong?”

Sighing, Liz shakes her head and looks back out the window. “Nothing. I just…nothing, forget about it.”

Isabel watches Liz fidget with a stack of brochures before saying, “You know, if you wanna talk…about anything…you can talk to me.”

Liz looks over gratefully and says, “Thanks, Isabel. But I’m fine…really.”

Nodding, Isabel squeezes Liz’s hand and stands up to walk back to her seat next to Jesse. Liz watches her go and when she leans over to kiss Jesse, she smiles…thankful that everything did turn out ok yesterday. Shoving aside her stacks of maps, she gets up in search of a bathroom.

Max is playing cards with Michael, Maria and Kyle when he sees Liz get up and walk toward the front of the car and step through the connecting doors into the next car. Throwing his cards down, he says, “I’ll be back.” And he stands up, walking in the same direction Liz did.

When he reaches the next car, he sees Liz up ahead walking through another set of doors and into another car. He follows her until he sees her duck into a bathroom and shut the door. Walking forward, he stands just outside the bathroom door, leaning back on the opposite wall and he waits.

He’s rewarded a few minutes later by the door opening and Liz looking at him like she knew he would be there. Of course she would know he was there.

“What are you doing Max?” She asks him as she remains in the doorway.

He shrugs and says, “Hanging out…pondering the meaning of life.”

She rolls her eyes at him, bristling at his smugness. Since when did he get so cocky? “Really. Looks more like you’re following me.”

He pushes away from the wall and takes a step toward her. “And what if I was? Would I be in trouble?” He watches Liz’s face turn red and he smiles in satisfaction. Taking another step forward, he says, “Would you punish me?” He presses against her, pinning her to the side of the doorjamb with his body. He smirks at her when he feels her unconsciously respond to him by pressing her hips into his and he leans his head down, hovering his mouth next to her ear without touching…his breath dancing over her sensitive skin. And he whispers, “I was just waiting for the bathroom.”

Before she knows what’s going on, Liz finds herself alone in the hallway next to a closed bathroom door. She leans her head back against the wall and closes her eyes, taking a deep breath. Suddenly, she becomes furious. Furious at the whole situation, furious with Max…but most of all, furious with herself. She kicks the wall in front of her and lets out a frustrated growl before turning on the bathroom door and hitting it. “I’m not doing this, Max.” She says loudly. “Do you hear me? I’m not playing these games with you.” She doesn’t wait for an answer as she turns in a huff and stomps back down the car toward her own.

Muttering to herself the entire way, she finally reaches her seat and plops down into it, snatching up some brochures and determined to forget about Max and his arrogance. A few minutes later, she’s aware of him walking past her seat to his own and she looks out the window again before taking a deep breath and walking back the two rows to where everyone else is sitting. She sits next to Serena, across from Isabel and Jesse and turns sideways in her seat to face Max, Michael, Maria and Kyle. Throwing the brochures on the table between them, she says, “Here are the options. Are we voting…or how do you wanna do this?”

Maria looks at Serena, both concerned at Liz’s tone and attitude as Max stares at the brochures in front of him. Did he go too far…push her too hard? His goal was to make her realize she’s wrong…not to push her over the edge doing it.

Michael sits back looking at Liz and he suddenly feels bad for the way he talked to her the night before in the alley. She had made sure they could all get away by sacrificing herself and he was a jerk to her. “Liz, can I talk to you for a minute?” He asks her as he stands up from his seat.

She looks up at him oddly and says, “Sure.” as she gets up to follow him to the end of the train car.

Max watches them go, wondering what Michael wants to talk to her about…hoping he’s not a jerk to her.

Liz approaches Michael in front of the doors connecting their train car to the next and says, “What is it, Michael?”

He fidgets slightly, not meeting her eyes and says, “I just wanted to uh…you know…I was kind of a jerk last night and um…” He glances at Liz and looks back to see Max eyeing them before continuing. “Look, I’m not gonna apologize for coming back for you.”

Liz smiles inwardly at Michael’s lame attempt at an apology and says, “Well I’m not gonna tell you that I’m glad you came back for me, because you guys shouldn’t have taken that risk. But I will thank you…because I don’t know how much longer I could have stood there in a stand off with them.”

He smirks at her and says, “You got balls of steel, you know that?”

Liz snorts out loudly in laughter. “Well…um…thank you…I think.”

“No, really. You’re like the ultimate battle chick…a machine. I’m impressed.” He says.

Liz stops cold at his description of her. She knows he’s trying to pay her a compliment. How could he know that he’s just hit upon a sore spot…the basis of her problems with Max right now? So she smiles and says, “Coming from you, Michael…I’m flattered.” And she lightly touches his arm before turning to return to her seat.

Is that what she is now? A machine? A strategizing, battling, unemotional machine? Sure, Michael would admire that in someone…but what about everyone else? She doesn’t want to be thought of like that. As she sits back down, she can still feel Max’s eyes on her and she resists looking over at him. Instead, she says, “So, um…I’m not sure how you guys wanna do this. Maria, Kyle and Serena usually left it up to me about where we’d go.”

Serena leans toward Liz and grabs her hand. “I think voting would be a good idea.” She knows that Liz is stressed about moving…she always is. And now that they’ve doubled in size as a group, she’s probably feeling overwhelmed with the responsibility. “What did you guys do to decide?” Serena looks over at Max.

“We…uh…drew city names out of a hat.” Max says, suddenly embarrassed at their lackadaisical way of making decisions. “But, voting sounds good now.”

“Did you narrow the list down any, Liz?” Kyle asks.

Liz gives Serena a small smile and squeezes her hand before saying to the group, “I think either Johannesburg or Mexico City would be our best bets.”

“Should we go to Mexico? Isn’t it a little close?” Maria asks.

“That’s what I was thinking…but it’s a huge city….five times the size of Johannesburg. It’d be tough to find us there.” Liz says as she tears off little pieces of paper from one of her travel books and hands each person one to write their vote on. She writes down her vote before passing the pen to Serena.

They each write down their votes and toss them in the middle of the table in front of Max and Maria. Liz writes the names of the two cities on a piece of paper and says, “Max, you wanna read them?”

He picks up each piece of paper and unfolds it, reading them off. “Johannesburg, Mexico City, Mexico City, Johannesburg, Mexico City, Johannesburg, Mexico City and…” Kyle drums his hands on the table for effect, making everyone smile and Max unfolds the last paper. “Looks like we’re going to Mexico.”

Liz leans back and lets out a breath. “Whew! I thought it was gonna be a tie.” Gathering up all the brochures, maps and scraps of paper, Liz stands up and walks back up two rows to the seat she was in earlier and packs it all away in her bag.

A short time later, the train pulls in to the station in Brussels and they make their way off and through immigration, each getting another stamp in their passports, before grabbing two cabs and going to the airport. As everyone else tries to stay out of sight, Maria purchases tickets for all of them to Mexico City. She walks back to the group, which is sitting in the corner of a lounge, and hands them all back their passports along with their tickets. “I tried to get us all spread out as much as I could in pairs. The flight’s already kind of full. We have two hours so we better go get in line for security and customs. We’re at gate B15.” Picking up her bag, she grabs Michael’s hand and takes off toward security.

Serena leaves next by herself, followed by Liz and slowly, Isabel, Jesse, Kyle and Max also make their way through the crowds through security.

Max keeps everyone in his sight as he brings up the rear and also eyes his surroundings. The airport is crowded, which is good, and as he makes his way down the terminal he doesn’t see anyone or anything suspicious. Getting through security is always a cause for nervousness and breath holding, but they all make it through without any trouble.

A half an hour later, Max is walking slowly past all the gates trying to pass the time until their plane leaves. He makes a special effort to keep an eye on Liz and where she is at all times. Up ahead, he sees her stop in a sunglass shop and he follows her in, keeping his eyes on her but not making contact.

As Liz tries on a pair of sunglasses, she sees Max enter the shop and she tries on another pair of sunglasses. The young saleswoman can’t take her eyes off of Max as soon as he enters the shop, and when he looks at her, she gives him her best smile and says, “Hi…can I help you with anything?” Liz watches as Max looks at the sunglasses displayed in the counter and he says, “I’m just looking, thanks.”

The woman then leans over the counter and says, “I have the perfect pair of sunglasses…they’d look great on you.” And she bends over to retrieve them, making sure to give Max and eyeful of her cleavage. When she stands back up with the sunglasses, Max makes a move to take them from her, but she says, “Here…let me.” She leans over the counter and proceeds to put them on him, taking her time to run her fingers through the hair above his ears.

Liz can’t believe the woman’s obvious flirtation and as she tries to step to the side of the upright display in front of her for a better view, she knocks into it causing several pairs of sunglasses to fall to the floor. Both Max and the woman look over at Liz…the woman in irritation and Max with a knowing smirk on his face…and Liz blushes, muttering, “Sorry.” as she bends over to pick the sunglasses off the floor.

The woman rolls her eyes and turns her attention back to Max. “They look great on you…I can give you a good deal if you want them.” Liz looks up from the floor and becomes furious at the look the woman is giving Max. She slams the sunglasses back on the display rack as she watches the slut behind the counter come on to Max. He’s just standing there like he’s completely oblivious to the fact that this woman is practically throwing herself at him.

He takes the sunglasses off and lays them back on the counter, telling the woman, “Thanks, but I think I’ll stick with the pair I have.” And he turns to leave the store, throwing an amused glance at Liz before walking out of sight.

Liz turns to look at the woman watch Max walk away before turning to Liz and waving her hand in front of her face. “Whew! What I wouldn’t give for a piece of that! He was absolutely yummy…don’t you think?” And she grins at Liz as if they’re age old friends.

Liz rolls her eyes and says, “Yah.” before storming out of the store and toward her gate. He did that on purpose. He made that woman come on to him to make her jealous. Fuming, she sees red as she walks down the terminal, then she takes a deep breath trying to get herself under control She curses herself internally for being so childish…of course he didn’t make her come on to him. She cringes at how ridiculous she’s being and moves to the windows just to the left of the entrance to the jet way and surveys the crowd in the gate area.

She forces herself to pull it together as she silently takes a head count of their group. Everyone is accounted for, all waiting patiently and separately around the waiting area. She pretends to read a magazine as the gate agent makes the first boarding call and passengers start handing their tickets to the agent and file through the door.

Max stands toward the back and watches as Liz looks at each passenger getting on the plane, no doubt reading each person’s mind to make sure they’re safe. He has to hand it to her; you wouldn’t know what she was doing by looking at her idly glancing down at her magazine and looking up at each person in line. As the crowd thins, he heads toward the agent and hands her his boarding pass, throwing a look at Liz before stepping into the jet way. He makes his way onto the 747, passing Maria, Kyle, Michael and Serena on his way to his seat.

Liz waits until the final boarding call and makes sure she’s the last person on the plane. The flight attendant closes the door behind her and she looks down at her boarding pass to find her seat number. As she walks down the isle, she finally reaches her row and looks down to see Max next to an empty seat, smiling at her and raising his eyebrows as he stands up to let her into the row. He’s seated in the aisle seat and she’s assigned to the middle. Next to the window is an elderly man who appears to already be sleeping.

She buckles herself in and tucks her bag under the seat in front of her before looking over at Max. He’s looking through an in-flight magazine and doesn’t acknowledge her so she absently pulls the first thing she sees from the pocket in front of her…the safety card…and studies it.

After a few minutes, the engines roar to life and the plane backs out of the gate heading toward the runway. Max notices Liz tensing and he realizes that this is the first time he’s ever flown next to her and he doesn’t even know how she feels about flying. The plane speeds up and flies down the runway, preparing for take-off and Max looks down to see Liz gripping the armrests so hard her knuckles are white. He glances over at her face and her eyes are squeezed shut and he reaches over to pry one of her hands off the armrest, pulling it into his lap and lacing his fingers through hers.

She’s surprised when she feels Max’s hand on hers and she lets him hold onto her hand as the plane rises up into the sky. Once the plane is in the air, Max feels Liz relax and he looks over at her. “I didn’t know you were scared of flying.”

“I’m not scared of flying, I’m scared of taking off. Did you know that 95% of plane crashes happen within the first five minutes of take-off?”

“No…I didn’t.” Max rubs his thumb over the back of her hand and looks forward again. The plane shudders slightly as the landing gear folds up into the plane and the flaps move and Liz tightens her grip on his hand. He turns to her and says, “It’s just the landing gear.” And she turns to him with a small smile and they look into each other’s eyes for several minutes until the flight attendant comes down the aisle with the drink cart.

Once the video screens drop from the ceiling for the movie, Max looks down and sees his hand tangled with Liz’s and he smiles, happy that she hasn’t pulled away. The cabin lights darken and he closes his eyes to try and sleep.

When Max wakes up, he sees the seat next to him is empty and the old man next to the window is still sleeping. Standing up, he stretches and walks down the aisle toward the bathrooms. Just as he reaches the door, it flies open and Liz practically jumps out. “Cold again?” He asks with a smile.

“Max. Oh…um, yah.” She smiles back at him. “Did you sleep well?”

“Yah.” He notices her fidgeting at how close they are and looking around to make sure they’re alone, he looks back at her and says, “Liz, look…I’m sorry…about earlier, well, about how I’ve been acting. I mean, you’ve made it pretty clear that you don’t want a physical relationship with me. So, I just wanted to let you know that I’m not gonna push it anymore. You’ve obviously made up your mind, so I just need to respect that.”

Liz looks up at him, puzzled at his sudden change in attitude. “Oh. Um…ok then. Well, thanks…I’m just gonna…um…you know…go.” She hesitates, a confused look on her face, and walks around him down the aisle back to her seat. What caused his change of mind? Was it what she said to him on the train? As she sits back down, she thinks over everything he said and can’t decide if she’s relieved or disappointed about it.

Max closes the door to the bathroom and looks in the mirror. What she said to him on the train earlier hit him and he realized that he didn’t want to play games with her either. If she wanted him, great…but he couldn’t make her. By pursuing her relentlessly, he was just pushing her further away. She had to decide for herself that she wanted to be with him…nothing he did was going to change her mind. He knows that she loves him…but maybe that just isn’t enough anymore.

Sighing and running his hand through his hair, he feels his heart turn to lead in his chest as he tries to accept that she really doesn’t want to be with him and he braces himself to the fact that he has to be tortured by sitting next to her for the rest of this plane ride. Where he’ll be able to smell her…to feel their connection flare at their close proximity. “You’d better get used to it and just deal with it, Evans.” He mutters to himself under his breath as he makes his way back to his seat.

By the time he reaches his seat, he has himself gathered together and he smiles at Liz as he buckles his seatbelt. She gives him a hesitant smile before looking back at the magazine she’s reading…although she’s not able to read anything on its pages. She’s struggling…with great difficulty…to not read Max’s mind right now. She’s trying so hard not to that she’s gritting her teeth together and trying to focus on anything but him.

~TBC~

You're going to be the death of me.
Obi Wan Kenobi to Anakin Skywalker
Col Threadkiller is the coolest!<img src=http://www.roswell-orbs.com/smilies/coo ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/uangel13.showP ... Hmm, if this were an NC-17 fic, I could definately see the potential for a mile high adventure between dear old M&L. Good job. Although, I'm still realing from you calling Michael a jerk, three times! Difficult but never a jerk. <img src=http://www.theunholytrinity.org/cracks_ ... iggrin.gif ALT=":grin"> Oh and while I find lack-a-daisy a colorful expression, did you maybe mean Lackadaisical?
