PART FIFTY-FOUR:

Where they were, he didn’t know, but it definitely wasn’t a pleasant place. The murky, dank chamber had a distinctly foul odor and the floors looked to have been tainted with some horrid substance. Lupin’s head was still reeling from the abrupt way they’d exited the Shrieking Shack. In one instant, Pettigrew had been bellowing threats to him, feeling ever so bold considering Lupin was bound and wandless – and in the next instant, he’d mumbled, “It’s time,” and magically forced Lupin’s hand to grab hold of a distressed looking finial from an old headboard as he grabbed it himself. They were sucked into a portkey that brought them there – wherever there was.

“What is it that you’re after, Peter?” growled Lupin, as Pettigrew nervously paced the chamber floor. “Aside from your apparent desire to kill me, that is? Why did you want that pendant?”

“Pendant?” snapped Pettigrew. “You think it was all about that silly, worthless pendant?” He laughed maniacally. “That was merely bait – and you took it, you fool. Didn’t you? No, I have absolutely no use for an insignificant little trinket – please!" He continued to laugh. "I already possess things of far greater value than that.” He stroked his gloved left hand with the gloveless right. “I wanted to lure you in, by taking something that you prized, my old friend. It’s a shame that nosy, meddling Severus Snape had to get in my way, or I would have had her – but, who knew that ridiculous moonstone would be just as reliable to ensnare you? Just a stroke of luck I guess.”

Lupin struggled to free himself – he was burning with the desire to annihilate Pettigrew. “You’re luck is about to run out, Peter – I can guarantee you that! I should have killed you when I had the chance!”

“My luck’s run out?” laughed Pettigrew. “No, no, no – this day is my day of good fortune, Remus. And do you know why?”

“I’m not going to play games with you,” Lupin said, his eyes gleaming with hatred as he glared at Pettigrew.

“Because I have a little gift to share with you, that’s why,” replied Pettigrew, as he began to remove his dragonhide glove.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART FIFTY-FIVE:

Genevieve bent over quickly, scrambling through the pile of wood to retrieve her pendant. As her hand grasped it, however, something very odd began to happen. She felt as if she were being sucked into to something – a portal of some kind or another. Colors whizzed by in a stream of tints and shades. A great rush of wind was all around her, as if she’d been swept up by a cyclone and then she landed, feet firmly planted on a revolting looking granite floor. Still clutched in her hand was the moonstone pendant.

“Remus!” she cried, as she saw Lupin bound across the ominous chamber. She saw a man near him, pointing an unnatural metal hand at him and knew immediately this was Peter Pettigrew.

This time it was Pettigrew who was caught off guard. He turned his eyes to Genevieve in disbelief and Lupin called to her.

“Run, Genevieve! Get out of here!”

“How on earth did you get here, you meddlesome little girl?” Pettigrew asked, lowering his aberrant hand and striding towards her.

She’d been wondering the same thing. How did she get there? It must have been the moonstone – the legend of the Lune de’Lamant said the stone would bind the lovers, heart and soul. Evidently, in her heart and soul she wanted nothing more than to find Lupin, so the stone acted as a portkey and brought her to him. Genevieve said nothing to Pettigrew as he came even closer to her.

“It’s no matter how you got here,” he shrugged. “You can sit back and enjoy the show, however. Have you ever seen a beast put down?”

Genevieve spat in his face. “I hope you rot, you miserable bastard!”

Pettigrew wiped the spittle from his eye and snarled, “Oh, I’ve a much better idea. Lupin, you can watch me finish off your little wench!”

Lupin thrashed against his magical constraints as Pettigrew grabbed Genevieve violently by the hair with his powerful hand. He dragged her and tossed her to the granite floor, right in front of Lupin.

“This is going to hurt you far worse than it’s going to hurt me,” he chortled, bringing his hand back to strike.

Genevieve’s mind started to feel like gelatin – she felt herself looking at the scene in slow motion. Lupin was mouthing indistinct words as he fought to free himself. Pettigrew’s eyes were filled with an insane rage as he lobbed his silver hand back to strike her. And Genevieve cowered on the cold floor, waiting to die – waiting, until she glimpsed the moonstone, still in her hand. Without knowing why, she thought to do something. She had no idea why and what would happen, but the feeling in her gut insisted that she do it now. She rolled out of the path of Pettigrew’s hand - which hit with a forceful clank on the rock floor – she stood up and slipped the pendant around Lupin’s neck.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

Thanks you guys, Melisa & bookwork!! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

**********************************************

PART FIFTY-SIX:

Lupin flinched as the chain settled around his neck. The silver made a faint hissing noise as it burned his skin. He couldn’t figure out why Genevieve had done that – but his mind didn’t stay focused on that. It focused on how to get out of those blasted constraints. The burning sensation was easy enough to ignore for now. And then it began. A twinge of a very recognizable feeling came over him and he thought that the seriousness of the situation had driven him mad. He couldn’t possibly be transforming. He was imagining things. It wasn’t even the full moon.

Genevieve backed away from Lupin and Pettigrew followed her, determined that she wouldn’t get away again. He was so attentive to catching her that he didn’t seem to notice the man transforming into a werewolf behind him.

The moonstone, Genevieve thought. It’s made him shapeshift into a werewolf. I need to keep Pettigrew distracted.

She backed away farther, trying to distance herself from Lupin and at the same time keep Pettigrew’s eyes off of him. He was nearly all wolf now – if she could find a way to reach Lupin’s wand, she’d be at a slight advantage – if Lupin didn’t decide to attack her, that is.

Lupin’s wand looked as if it had been cast aside when Pettigrew had brought them there. It lay on the ground, just a few feet away from where she was and she was pretty sure Pettigrew hadn’t noticed her distinct interest in it. He looked more interested in catching her.

A low, vicious snarl diverted his attentions, however – Pettigrew reeled around and gasped. The gleaming eyes of the wolf were centered on him and he stood frozen in fear. Peter Pettigrew was a coward at heart and the sight of Lupin in werewolf form had horrified him. Even the silver hand, a weapon that had very deadly potential, wasn’t any consolation to him. Lupin growled with such ferocity, that Pettigrew fell to the ground, shaking in terror.

“R-r-remus!” he cried. “P-p-please …” He scrambled back, knocking Genevieve aside.

Genevieve, too, was fairly frightened. She’d seen Lupin transformed before, but then he had taken the wolfsbane potion that ensured he would be rendered harmless. This transformation was not natural and she wasn’t so sure that it was completely risk free. She shifted the few feet necessary to reach Lupin’s wand and grabbed it. She was unsure of what to do with it, though. She felt positive she needed to stop Pettigrew, but also felt the need to perhaps immobilize Lupin as well – but how?

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART FIFTY-SEVEN:

Genevieve aimed Lupin’s wand directly at Pettigrew’s head. The man recoiled as Lupin inched closer. Genevieve’s mind couldn’t slow down – she had to think. I need a spell – anything! She remembered the disarming spell she’d learned.

“ Expeliarmus!” she shouted. Pettigrew’s wand shot out of the pocket of his robes at her and he was jolted. Good, she thought as she caught the wand.

Lupin crept closer still and Genevieve wondered what to do next. Lupin would be in pouncing range momentarily and she wasn’t quite sure she was prepared to see Pettigrew – as evil as he was – torn limb from limb before her eyes.

And then Pettigrew did something that she didn’t expect. He used his ability as an Animagi and began to alter into rat-form. The rodent version of Pettigrew scurried between her legs and stopped. Unfortunately, Lupin’s concentration shifted towards her.

Giving the rat a forceful boot with her foot, she sent him gliding in midair across the chamber, landing with a pathetic squeak on the solid floor. Lupin hadn’t noticed the vermin missile that had shot above his head as he sniffed and snarled towards Genevieve.

“Easy,” she said, trembling with fright as she spoke to the wolf. “It’s me, Genevieve.” A low growl made her tremble even more as Lupin the werewolf stood on all fours legs right before her.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART FIFTY-EIGHT:

She didn’t know whether to run or try to cast a spell or what. She saw the moonstone pendant, still around his neck, looking almost like a collar. If I can get it off, she thought suddenly, I’ll bet he’ll transform back. She gulped forcefully. It’s worth a shot, at least – if I’m fortunate enough not to have my hand bitten off in the process.

She held out her hand, which was shaking like a leaf, and slowly brought it towards the scruff of the wolf’s neck and looked hard into his gleaming eyes with her bright blue ones. Deep in his throat, he continued to growl, but he’d stopped advancing and suddenly seemed much more passive. She touched his fur and felt for the clasp on the chain.

“I’m just going to take the pendant off,” she said quietly. “Remember who I am?” The wolf sniffed the air. “I’m Genevieve,” she whispered. He whimpered, as if he understood and she unclasped the pendant and removed it from his neckline.

For an instant, she’d thought it wasn’t going to work. He still stood calmly – almost as though he were transfixed, but remained in wolf form. But in the next instance, the transformation back to man began. She rushed over to where his robes lay and brought them back to wrap around him as he changed. Within a matter of minutes, Remus Lupin sat on the ground wrapped in his robes and shivered as Genevieve held him in her arms. He was disoriented and rather confused, apparently from the unscheduled transformation.

She whispered to him, “I’m sorry he got away. When you came towards me, he must have gotten out through there.” She gestured to a crack in the wall near where she’d kicked the rat version of Pettigrew. “I should have thought of a way to stop him.”

Lupin shook his head. “No, no – you did fine. You saved our skins, didn’t you?” His body was still shaking rather violently as he asked, “What made you put the pendant on me?”

“I don’t know,” answered Genevieve truthfully. “I just got this – this strange feeling that I should, so I did, but I can’t explain why. I had no idea you’d transform! Are you OK?”

“It left me feeling a bit peculiar, I’ll admit that,” said Lupin, whose face was ashen. “That’s quite a powerful pendant.”

“How are we going to get out of here?” asked Genevieve nervously, as she tried to help Lupin to his feet. “I mean, I’m not even sure I know where here is.”

“Me either,” said Lupin. “But, there is a way back.”

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART SIXTY-ONE:

Madam Pomfrey pounced on them both within seconds of returning to the Hospital Wing and had them in adjacent hospital beds in no time. Pulling a divider up between the beds, she did a great deal of poking and prodding which no amount of complaining from either of them could stop. She mumbled quite a bit about disregarding well-being and when Ron, who stood outside of the curtains with Harry and Hermione, let it slip that they had experimentally done joint-apparating, he could have sworn he heard a smacking sound – presumably a smack alongside Lupin’s head for allowing such a thing. She billowed out from behind the curtains and scowled at Harry, Ron and Hermione, telling them that she had a mind to turn the Hospital Wing into a high security sector of the castle if she couldn’t keep patients where they should be. She stormed off to her office to fetch a tonic and grumbled the whole way about losing patients and gaining others. Harry and Ron gave each other exasperated looks and Hermione peeped through the curtains to tell Genevieve and Professor Lupin they’d leave them to rest.

They only got a few minutes of rest, because the sound of a woman’s irate voice ringing through the walls of the infirmary woke them both just as they’d started to drift off to sleep.

“I can’t tell you how long I’ve been trying to get in here to see her!” the woman said, in an enraged tone. “You’d think this was a prison – not a school!”

Madam Pomfrey’s stern footsteps could be heard harshly striking the floor of her office and making their way out to meet the irritated woman who’d just arrived. She clunked the bottle of tonic she’d been holding down on the table near the door and said, “Rosmerta! How dare you come bursting in my infirmary – and what in the world do you think you’re doing with that creature? There are sick people here!”

“I have been worried senseless about Genevieve, then I hear she’s up at the Hogwarts Hospital Wing and when I come to see her, I’m turned away! I suppose you had something to do with that Poppy?”

“I had everything to do with that, Rosmerta! How can you expect the girl to recover if she’s being bombarded with visitors? Not that she’s had the chance to properly improve anyhow, what with all the running off she’s been doing. And now the professor’s looking like he’s on death’s doorstep. Fine pair they make – looking like a couple of corpses lying in there.”

Madam Rosmerta glanced over to the beds that were curtained. She walked over, carrying Morpheus under her arm.

“Don’t you even think about bringing that filthy creature near those hospital beds!” cried Madam Pomfrey. She looked as though she would faint from the very thought of a cat being near the sterile beds.

“He’s missed his Mummy,” Rosmerta huffed as she pulled back the curtains. “Just you try and stop me!”

Morpheus scampered across the bed and pounced at Genevieve, who gave him a weak cuddle. She promised Madam Rosmerta a full report on what had happened as soon as she was feeling up to it. At the present moment, Rosmerta was content just to let her rest. She and Morpheus finally left after awhile, in order to let Genevieve and Lupin relax and Madam Pomfrey moodily yanked the curtains back in place and then withdrew to her office.

Genevieve lay silently in her hospital bed and stared up at the stark white ceiling and thought to herself about the bizarre events that had only just happened in the few hours that had passed. She listened closely and heard Lupin’s breathing, slow and steady, coming from the other side of the partition. He must have dozed off, she thought. She stroked the moonstone, which she once again was wearing around her neck, then unclasped it and set it on the bedside table. Silently, she crept out of her bed and pushed the curtains aside that separated her from Lupin. He looked peaceful as he slept, one arm lying spread across the fluffy pillow and the other tucked under his head. She climbed into his bed and curled up beside him, wrapping his free arm around her. He shifted in his sleep and nuzzled in close to her and she sighed. She knew Madam Pomfrey would probably burst a blood vessel when she found her out of her bed again, but she didn’t care. She was right where she belonged.

THE END

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...
