Part 31~

Two days. It’s been two days and Weston still hasn’t heard from Gerard. Looking out his office window which overlooks the main testing area, Dr. Weston contemplates calling Gerard’s Executive Assistant Director. As the hours pass, Weston is more and more convinced that Gerard didn’t make it out of the ambush in Mexico City. The procedure in place is for Weston to wait five days to contact the EAD, but he’s getting antsy.

Sighing, he walks out of his office and looks over their newly remodeled facility and smiles. Yes, this will work much more to their advantage. The walls of the holding cells were converted to a high grade, thick bulletproof glass. His technicians are busy at work in the central area, which contains all of their testing equipment and he thinks that the subject’s ability to see each other will work to his advantage and help to keep them in line.

To the left is his first subject, Jim Valenti. He appears to be sleeping at the moment. Smiling, he recalls the man’s reaction when the other two were brought in. He underestimated the emotional bond these people apparently have to each other and thinks he can use it to his advantage.

In the middle is Max Evans…a definite prize as a full alien with the ability to heal. And he seems to have a strong connection to Liz Parker. Having him plus two humans that he healed and gave powers to is an opportunity that he could only dream of.

And last, but not least…Liz Parker. Willful, rebellious Liz Parker. He wasn’t expecting the depth of loyalty she has toward her friends. The way she handled herself in Mexico City impressed him and once again he became convinced that, human or not, this girl held a leadership role within the group. As he looks at her, and is met with her stare, he feels suddenly exposed…as if she can read his very thoughts. Shaking his head at the crazy notion, he walks over to check on the day’s progress with his lead technician.

When Dr. Weston walks away, Liz sinks down on her bed and hangs her head in her hands. She doesn’t know what’s worse, being completely in the dark about what they were going to do to her next…or now knowing exactly what they have planned for them. She’s spent the last two days desperately searching every mind within the facility…searching for someone who might be able to help them. But she found that only the small group of lab workers and orderlies that were hovering around close by knew who and what they were. And within that small group, she’s only found maybe two people who seem to be sympathetic. The rest just go about their job as if there’s nothing wrong with what they’re doing.

One, an elderly woman named Anne, brings them their meals and cleans their cells. She seems to be concerned for their well being and not too sure about the experiments that are being performed. The other, a younger man, a technician, seems to be attracted to her and she senses deep guilt coming from him. He also stares at her a lot, which is making Max angrier by the hour.

Looking up, she sees Max looking over at her in concern and she gives him a small smile telling him she’s ok. He’s scared; she can feel it radiating from him like a pulse that just gets stronger. He’s remembering what they did to him when he was captured in High School and he’s remembering what he saw from her when he healed her. She’s given up trying to keep herself from reading his mind and Jim’s. It’s the only comfort she can get at this point…knowing what they’re thinking about.

She knows Jim has figured out that she can read his mind. She tried to discreetly let him know through hand gestures…careful that no one was watching. By the look on his face and the thoughts that bombarded his mind when he realized, she can safely assume that he knows of her new ability. Like most people when they find out, he continuously thought of things he didn’t want to think about. Then became horrified that she knew what he was thinking. She’s not comfortable reading his thoughts, given that they were never very close, but she had to know what he knew about this place and the people in it. And what happened to him…how he was captured.

Apparently, he was caught completely off guard and ambushed out in the desert when he was responding to a call about a stranded motorist. She also knows that his powers have begun to show themselves but he hasn’t really worked on developing them. He’s spent most of his effort in hiding them.

She knows that they’re in DC and she constantly tries to see if any of the others are close by. If they ever realize that they’re in DC, she’ll know the minute they’re in the city. She can sense Maria, Serena and Kyle from miles away because she’s so in tune with them. But there won’t be another dramatic escape…not this time. They’ve taken severe security measures to ensure that no one will be getting in here again.

Mexico/Texas border

Waiting in their cramped minivan at the border crossing, Maria gathers everyone’s passports, including the one they changed for Gerard. It’s been a long two days of traveling and none of them has gotten much sleep. The closer they get, the more nervous everyone gets. When the guard stops them, Michael hands over their passports and tells the guard that they were in Mexico on a trip for a college class with their professor. After a few more questions and a quick search of the van, they’re waved through without any problems and they all breath a sigh of relief.

“Well, that went better than I thought it would.” Isabel says from the back.

“So now what?” Kyle asks.

“We’re driving straight through to DC. The sooner we get there, the better.” Michael says as he drives.

“Well yah, but then what?” Kyle persists. “We’re not gonna be able to pull off what you did last time.”

After a few moments of silence, Gerard says, “I’d like to contact my family…let them know I’m alright. My daughter is…sick…and I know my wife will be worried about me since she hasn’t heard from me for a few days.”

When no one says anything, he continues, “Please. I won’t tell her anything other than I’m ok.”

Michael looks at him in the rearview mirror, then over to Isabel. “What do you think?”

Isabel studies Gerard for a moment and says, “I guess it would be ok. Pull over at the next exit and we’ll let him use a payphone.”

Gerard closes his eyes in relief. His daughter, Jenny, had come home from college last year when they found out she had Hodgkin’s. His wife has been consumed in Jenny’s treatment and she doesn’t need the additional stress of worrying about him. “Thank you.” He tells them.

At the next exit, Michael pulls into a gas station and escorts Gerard to a payphone. “What name is your phone listed under?”

“Matthew Gerard. Washington DC.” Gerard tells him as Michael picks up the phone and dials information. Michael asks for the number and hangs the phone up. He picks it up again and dumps in some change before dialing *67 to block the number from showing up on caller ID, then dials the number he got from information. He lets it ring until he hears a woman answer and he hands the phone to Gerard.

“Honey?” He asks.

“Matt? Where have you been? Why haven’t you called?” His wife asks frantically.

“I’m sorry. I’ve been working on a case that has me working around the clock. How’s Jenny?”

“It’s worse, Matt. She’s in the hospital now getting chemo. When are you coming home?”

He closes his eyes and says, “Oh God…I…I don’t know. I’ll try to get home as soon as possible. Tell her…tell her I love her and that I’ll see her soon.”

“Please try to make it back soon. I’m scared, Matt.”

“I know…I’ll try.” He looks over at Michael’s impatient look and says, “I love you…I…I have to go now. I’ll see you as soon as I can.”

“I love you too.” She says quietly before he hangs up the receiver.

Gerard walks back over to the van with his head hung low. How is he ever going to get out of this? He didn’t even want to go to Mexico City, but he was in a hurry to get this case wrapped up and get these aliens out of his life for good so he could concentrate on his family. Things just can’t seem to get any worse than they are right now.

Kyle walks out of the convenience store with a bag of food and drinks and says, “We’re all ready to go. I topped off the gas.”

Michael climbs back in the driver’s seat and says, “Let’s go.”

Washington DC

Max looks around his small bathroom as he steps out of the shower. Every surface gleams with its sterility, mocking him at the situation he’s in. Everything is white, down to the small tiles on the floor covered by a green, woven rug. How odd to see such a small offering of comfort. A rug…something found in most people’s bathrooms to keep their feet from touching the cold floor and to help dry them when getting out of the shower. It seems strange to see something so…homey…in here.

He brushes his teeth quickly before dressing and stepping back into his glass prison. To his right, Jim looks back at him from the front wall of his cell. It seems so cruel to allow them to see each other but not be able to communicate. He knows the glass walls must be new from Liz, Kyle and Isabel’s description of the place when they were here. They hardly saw each other and never knew what was going on with the others.

Whether it’s a blessing or a curse, he hasn’t decided yet. Because while he can constantly see Liz and Jim, he also gets to watch as their captors lead them from their cells and perform their many tests on them in the exam area in front of their cells.

Which is where, he notices in panic, Liz is right now. He realizes that that’s what Jim has been watching and he rushes to the front of his cell to see Liz strapped onto a table with their customized restraint system that keeps the palms of her hands trapped against her sides. A sheet is covering Liz with a square section at her abdomen cut out. Dr. Weston is standing at her side, saying something that Max wishes with all his might he could hear.

A technician inserts an IV into her left arm as she stares at the ceiling…her lips pressed together in a thin line. Dr. Weston says something to her that makes her jerk her head in Max’s direction with wide eyes and she shakes her head ‘no’ as Weston looks at him as well. The doctor makes a note on his clipboard and she says something back to him.

Max watches as Liz drifts into unconsciousness and a technician lowers a light hanging from the ceiling. Dr. Weston stands aside as he watches the other man pick up a scalpel and make a long, horizontal incision along the exposed skin of her stomach. He feels his bile rise and he pounds his fists on the glass in front of him as he watches them cut open the most important person in his life. Looking over, he sees Jim grimacing in horror at the scene in front of him and he returns his attention to Liz. He forces himself to watch as they proceed to spend the next hour prodding deep inside of her, taking different samples from her. He’s thankful when they finally start closing and stitching her up and realizes that he has tears running down his face.

A couple of hours later, they unhook Liz from her IV and monitors and wheel her back into her room. She’s still unconscious when Dr. Weston enters Max’s room.

“What did you do to her?” Max demands.

“Just a little routine examination. She’ll be fine.” Dr. Weston tells him. “Especially after you heal her.”

Max looks at him, shocked that he would allow that. Then he realizes that they just want to see him heal someone. “Is that why you did that…so I would heal her?” He asks in disgust.

“Oh no. But it is convenient that you have that ability. It will allow for much less recovery time and we want you all to be as comfortable as possible. If you don’t, she’ll spend the next several weeks recovering…and in tremendous pain.”

Max shakes his head in disbelief…at the absolute immorality that lives within this man. “If I agree, will you let me stay with her…for just a little while?”

Weston seems to think about his request before nodding his head. “I don’t see a problem with that.” He turns and motions for Max to walk out before him.

Max glances over and sees Jim’s questioning gaze before turning to stand in front of Liz’s door. Weston unlocks it and lets Max in before three technicians join him at the front wall to watch.

Stepping into the room, Max walks over to Liz’s bed and kneels next to it. He blocks out the feeling of everyone’s eyes on him and gently caresses her face before bringing his hand under her shirt. He looks down and carefully removes the large bandage covering the incision and lays his hand on top of her abdomen. Already feeling their connection, he quickly heals the wound and dissolves the staples piercing her delicate skin. When he’s done, he looks up to her face and waits for her to wake up.

After a few minutes, he turns to see that they no longer have an audience and he climbs up on the bed next to Liz, leaning up on his elbow and running his hand through her hair. Eventually, he sees Liz’s eyelids flutter open and her eyes find his. She begins to smile before realization hits her and she jerks her head around at her surroundings, then back to Max. “Max…what…” She starts to sit up but he gently pushes her back to the bed.

“Shhh…it’s ok.” He tells her.

She struggles to remember what happened and her hand drifts to her stomach. “What…they were getting ready to operate on me…what happened?”

“They did. They let me heal you.” He puts his hand over hers. “You’ll be fine now.”

“Are they letting you stay in here?” She asks, looking out toward the work area.

“For a little while.” He looks in the direction she is. “They wanted to watch me heal you…I agreed if they would let me stay with you for a while.”

“Max, what are we gonna do? The others aren’t here…and even if they were, they’ll never get in here. I know what kind of security they have and they’ll never get through it.”

Max looks down at her and says, “I don’t know. I hate to say it, but I really wish Kyle were here.”

Liz knows he’s thinking about Kyle’s ability to control people’s minds and she wishes she could do that, too. As it is, their situation seems utterly hopeless. “Max…I’m so sorry. I don’t know how they found us.”

He cups her cheek in his hand and says, “It’s not your fault. I don’t know how they found us either, but we’ll get out of here. I just don’t know how yet.” He gives her a half smile and helps her to sit up.

“How’s Jim doing? Do you know what his powers are?” Max asks her.

“He’s fine…they haven’t done anything too bad to him yet. But I’m not sure what powers he has…I don’t think he knows.” She looks over to see Jim watching them. “He never worked on them to see what he could do.”

“Well, I guess it would be too much to hope that he would get the same powers as Kyle. I think we should concentrate on the schedules around here and trying to make it out ourselves.” He sees the doubtful look on her face and tries to stay optimistic. “At least they don’t seem to know the specifics about your powers. So we’ve got that going for us.”

“Right, I can just read their minds to death.” Liz rolls her eyes.

“No, but that can work to our advantage. Liz, we’ll get out of here.”

Liz can’t help but feel defeated. Being here is a life she knows all too well, along with the hopelessness. It seems like a lifetime ago that she was here, but the feelings are just as fresh as if she’d left here yesterday. “Max…”

He looks at her, concerned. “Yah?”

She bites her lip and says, “I’m...those things I said to you…in the park…I…I was wrong. I never meant to hurt you. You were right, I was trying to control everything and in the process everything fell apart. I didn’t want to hurt you.”

Max feels how helpless she’s feeling right now and he knows that she’s taking this as her last opportunity to tell him how she’s feeling. He swallows and really hopes that these won’t be their last words to each other…that this won’t be the last time he gets to hear her voice.

They both look over and see Weston looking at them as he takes a step in their direction. Liz grabs Max’s hand desperately and says, “I love you, Max. Please, just know that.”

Max reaches up and cups her face in his hands. “I love you, too.” He leans forward and kisses her fiercely before they hear the door open.

“Let’s go.” Weston says from the door as Max reluctantly pulls away from Liz. Her eyes are wide and she holds tightly to his hand for as long as she can before he’s lead from her room and back to his.

Once back in his room, Max pulls a chair over to the wall between his cell and Liz’s and sits as she does the same. They both bring their hands up on each side of the glass, so close to touching, but so far. Their eyes remain locked together as Dr. Weston watches from the main area…a smile forming on his face and plans swirling around in his head.

~TBC~

You're going to be the death of me.
Obi Wan Kenobi to Anakin Skywalker
Col Threadkiller is the coolest!<img src=http://www.roswell-orbs.com/smilies/coo ...

Part 32~

Lexington, Kentucky

Kyle pulls their van into a McDonald’s parking lot and everyone scrambles to get out and stretch their legs. Everyone but Gerard.

“Aren’t you coming?” Maria pokes her head back in the van and asks Gerard.

He just shakes his head and continues to look blankly out the side window.

“What’s wrong with him?” Isabel asks Maria.

Maria shrugs her shoulders. “Besides being held captive? I couldn’t tell you.” She walks away to follow Michael into the McDonald’s.

Isabel rolls her eyes and moves to stand in front of the side door to the van. Since everyone ran inside, she guesses she’ll have to stay out here and keep an eye on their prisoner. She looks in at Gerard and furrows her brows. He’s hardly said anything the entire trip and since the phone call to his wife, he’s seemed…sad. Not that he doesn’t have a reason to be worried, but sad?

“We won’t hurt you, you know. We just want our friends back.” She says to him.

He looks up, as if suddenly noticing that he’s not alone and looks at her. “I know.”

She’s more confused and asks, “So why are you all gloomy? The sooner we get our friends back, the sooner we let you go.”

“You wouldn’t understand.” He says matter-of-factly.

“Why, because I’m an alien?” She says in disgust.

“I’m worried about my family.”

“Oh yah? Well I’m worried about my family…my brother…who is probably being tortured by your people as we speak.” Isabel says indignantly. “At least you don’t have to worry about that.”

He looks at her a moment before saying, “My daughter…she’s really sick. I just want to be with her…she might be dying and I’m not there with her.”

“What’s wrong with her?” Isabel asks.

“Hodgkin’s disease. My wife told me she’s gotten worse…she’s in the hospital.”

“Oh. I’m sorry…but like I said, the quicker you help us get my brother and friends back, the sooner you can be with her.”

“I won’t be able to help you. They’ll never trade them for me.” He tells her defeatedly.

“Maybe not, but I think you can still help us.” She says as she turns away and watches Jesse walk out to join her.

Jesse puts an arm around Isabel and teases, “Hungry? I saw they have some neat toys in the kid’s meal.”

Isabel lightly punches him in the arm and laughs. “If you want the toy so bad, you get a kid’s meal.”

“Ok, ok…how about a Big Mac?” He pulls her closer and they sway together in the dark parking lot.

“Sounds good.” She smiles up at him before kissing him and shoving him back toward the building. “Oh, and don’t forget the fries…and a Diet Coke!” She calls out to him as he opens the door to go back inside.

“Yes, dear.” He sing-songs back to her and smiles.

Isabel watches him go as she leans in the doorway to the van. For all the trouble they had when he first found out about her, Max and Michael, things couldn’t be better between them now. Most days she still can’t believe that he left his life, his career, behind for her. But he did, and she tries each day to prove to him that it was worth it.

She sees Maria walk outside, followed by Kyle and Serena, sipping a drink and tearing off those stupid Monopoly game pieces she’s been collecting. Suddenly, Maria stops and starts screaming, “Oh my God! I won! I won!” She bounces around, waving her game pieces in the air and grabs Kyle, then Serena, still screaming about winning.

Isabel pushes away from the van and watches as Maria races over and screams, “I won! I won a cheeseburger!”

Isabel rolls her eyes and says, “Geez Maria, all that screaming…I thought you won something good.”

“A cheeseburger is something good.” Maria complains and fishes her paper game board from the back of the van, attaching her other game piece to it. “If I could only get Boardwalk…we’d be millionaires.” She muses as she studies her collection, sipping her drink.

“If you get that excited over a free cheeseburger, I’d hate to see what would happen if you got Boardwalk.” Kyle says wryly as he sits in the doorway of the van taking a bite of his burger.

Isabel and Serena laugh and Maria says, “Sure, make fun of me all you want. We’ll see who’s laughing when I make us rich.”

“What would we do with a million dollars anyway…get ourselves a penthouse in New York?” Kyle asks her with a smirk.

“No… I’d get a penthouse in New York. You would be living on the street.” Maria taunts as she refolds her game board and stuffs it back in her bag.

Kyle rolls his eyes as Maria walks over and sits next to him. “I might even throw you some change now and then...keep you well supplied with 40 ouncers.”

“Ooohh…you’re so generous.” Kyle laughs.

Gerard watches their teasing and laughing, amazed at how…normal…they all seem. He doesn’t know what he was expecting exactly over the last few days, but it certainly wasn’t for them to be…human. They’ve even treated him decently, asking him what he wants to eat or if he needs anything. Maria reminds him a lot of Jenny and he turns away from them to look back out the window in thought…hoping that his little girl is going to be ok.

Washington DC

Pain. It’s the only thing he’s aware of as they roughly transfer him from the gurney to his bed. He’s just been through four hours of hell and can’t believe that it’s finally over. Wincing as he tries to find a comfortable position on the bed, he closes his eyes and tries to will the pain away. Thinking about the incisions that feel like they cover his entire body makes him nauseous, so he tries to think of something else. Liz…he’ll think about Liz.

Sitting on the floor of her cell, Liz watches as they bring Max back in and lay him on his bed. She stopped watching what they were doing to him hours ago…not able to stomach it anymore. It seemed like they were never going to stop and she became afraid they were gonna kill him. Watching him try to find a comfortable position to lie in, she can only sense pain from him…so much pain. She brings her hand up to the glass that separates them and tries remain calm, hoping that he’ll feel it through their connection.

He turns his head to look at her and he instantly knows that she wants to heal him. Shaking his head, he tries to fill his mind with the thought that she can’t let them know she can heal…knowing she’ll hear him. Her face falls as she leans her forehead on the glass and presses her palm against it as well…as if trying to heal him through their separation.

“Max.” He sees the word form on her mouth, but doesn’t hear a sound. He hears it in his mind, though. All the times she’s said his name…all the different meanings in the way she says it. This time, though, he knows it’s said in despair and he wishes he could make everything better.

Turning his head to look back up at the ceiling, he sees Jim out of the corner of his eye standing right next to him on the other side of the wall. He looks over and sees the concern on his face as he looks down at the bandages Max knows are visible on his neck and arms. Jim looks up at his face and Max mouths the words, “I’m ok.” and offers him a small smile.

Jim knows he must be next and he wonders if he’s in for the same treatment Max received. He’s only human, not an alien…they must know that, right? But then he thinks back to when Kyle and Liz got out and the scars they had to show for their time in here and he thinks that his human status probably doesn’t matter. He grimaces as he watches Max struggling to find some comfort. He watched everything they did to Max…every surgical procedure, every sample taken…everything. In his mind, he was watching what they did to his son. And probably what they’d be doing to him.

He has no idea how they’re going to get out of here, or even if the others know where they are. Hell, he’s not even sure of where they are. It doesn’t look like the place Kyle, Liz and Isabel described but that was over three years ago. He feels totally blind, not knowing anything that’s happened. He doesn’t even know how Max and Liz were captured or what happened to the others. He doesn’t know where his son is and right now, that scares him more than being in here.

His attention is drawn to Liz who is waving her arm at him and he looks up to see her mouth, “Kyle. Ok.” And she smiles, nodding, to let him know the answer to what he was thinking. Startled, he realizes that she was reading his thoughts and it somewhat disconcerts him. He’s still a little freaked out that she can do that and finds that a lot of his time is spent policing his own thoughts.

He nods and mouths back to her, “Thank you.” before moving to sit down. The lights dim and he takes that to mean that it must be night time, time to go to bed and he makes a mental note of the number of days he’s been in here. This makes it five. Five days spent in this sterile prison and no one in the world knows where he’s disappeared to. By now, there’s probably a search going on in Roswell. Surely they found his truck on the side of the road in the desert. He knows that his disappearance has probably raised the suspicions of Amy and the Evans’. Probably the Parkers too, although he knows that Liz never wrote to them, never told them she was ok. It’s been difficult keeping this enormous secret from them all these years when they know that Kyle was set free. But as far as they know, Isabel was never let go either. It’s been worse for the Evans’…at least they knew their kids were somewhat safe and facing the Parkers with this knowledge has been a heavy burden for them the bear.

Jim walks over and lies down on his bed, willing himself to go to sleep and wake up to face another day of waiting. But he has a feeling he doesn’t have to wait for long…they’ll most likely drag him out of here in the morning and strap him onto that table out there.

Anne starts her shift at the base early the next morning, dreading seeing the things she sees every day in there. After she clocks in, she loads her cart with trays of food, towels and clean clothing and makes her way to the holding cells. She can’t for the life of her condone what’s being done to the people they have held in this place. But she has three grandkids at home to take care of, their mother, her daughter, having taken off with her boyfriend the previous year and leaving the kids in her care. This job pays well, and she needs the money.

She stops at the first room and opens the door to find the girl asleep on the floor pressed up against the wall. She shakes her head and frowns as she walks over to her and shakes her gently. “Honey, wake up. You shouldn’t be sleeping down there.” She sees the girl’s eyes open and she says, “Come on over here to the bed and get some proper rest.” as she helps her up off the floor.

She sees the girl look worriedly over to the next cell and she follows her gaze to see the young man in there sleeping. Grimacing, she notices the bandages on his arms and looks back at the concerned young woman. “He’s sleeping just fine. You should do the same.” She helps the girl into the bed and raises the covers over her.

“My name is Liz.” The girls says to her softly as she looks up at Anne with the saddest look she thinks she’s ever seen.

“It’s nice to meet you, Liz. I’m Anne.” She says before bringing a tray of food in and placing it on the small table before replacing the towels in the bathroom and setting a pile of clean clothes on the sink. When she walks back into the room, she sees that the girl has fallen back asleep and she wonders how such a little thing could be the cause of so much concern around here. Shaking her head, she leaves and goes to finish her rounds in the other rooms.

When Max wakes up, he’s instantly aware of the pain. Grabbing is stomach and grimacing, he struggles to sit up and looks over to see Liz still sleeping in the next room. He turns to look for Jim, but when he doesn’t see him, he looks around the testing area for him. Not seeing him there, either, he starts panicking. Where did they take him? Taking a closer look into Jim’s room, he sees the bathroom door open and darkness beyond. He stands up and approaches the front wall of his room and strains to look everywhere for any sign of Jim. All he sees is a handful of technicians busy at work in the lab area. No sign of Dr. Weston or Jim.

At a loss for what to do, he walks back to his bathroom to check on his injuries. Maybe he can heal them today. When he walks back out, he sees that Liz is awake. She gives him a questioning nod toward Jim’s cell and he shrugs his shoulders in answer. They share matching looks of concern on their faces as they gaze out again toward the lab area.

Out of the corner of his eye, Max sees Liz slump down in her chair and he looks over to see her staring blankly at the glass in front of her. He walks over to the wall that separates them and knocks on it, worried. After what seems like an eternity, she finally looks over and meets his gaze. Standing up, she approaches the glass and stands directly in front of him and mouths, “They’re here.”

~TBC~

You're going to be the death of me.
Obi Wan Kenobi to Anakin Skywalker
Col Threadkiller is the coolest!<img src=http://www.roswell-orbs.com/smilies/coo ...

I'm back! I'm back! <img src=http://www.uniquehardware.co.uk/server- ... /cwm27.gif ALT=":lol"> Sorry for the loooooong delay...but I'm newly inspired. Hopefully I won't have such a big dry spell again. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Part 33~

Darkness. As black as a moonless night in the middle of the desert. The only light in the room is seeping in from the small crack beneath the door…reaching for him with its small rays of comfort as he lies on a cot next to the wall. Time seemed to have stopped as soon as the door was shut and he has no earthly idea of how long he’s been in this room.

There’s no sound, only that of his breathing and the soft thumping of his heart and trying to remain calm has been his only activity. Every once in a while, a tray of food is brought in for him, but other than that, no one has been to see him.

Thoughts of what they have planned for him whirl around in his mind and he tries to send out his thoughts about where he’s at to Liz, hoping she’ll be able to read him.

Suddenly, a loud noise comes from the hallway outside and his head whips toward the door as it gets closer. He can hear several sets of footsteps as the noise stops outside his door. When the door opens, he has to shield his eyes to the blinding light but he can make out a large cart loaded down with machines and instruments. As four men enter his dark cell with the cart, the last thing Jim Valenti thinks of is Kyle.

“Who’s here?!” Max mouths back to Liz, alarmed. The look on her face is frightening and he gets the feeling that it’s not their friends who have come. Banging his hands on the glass between them, he mouths again, “Who’s here?”

Squeezing her eyes shut, Liz tries to block out the thoughts coming from Jim. Whatever is happening to him right now is too much for her and she stands up, pacing her cell, trying to distract her mind from the thoughts flowing through her. She looks back up at Max and mouths, “Jim. Trouble.”

Max’s shoulders sag in defeat when his thoughts are confirmed that they’re not about to be rescued. Now he can only wonder why they chose to separate Jim from them when they haven’t bothered to shield them from the brutal experiments before. He can only hope that they’ll allow him to heal Jim as they did Liz.

He watches as Liz anxiously paces her cell, her eyes darting around as if trying to find a small hole to crawl through, some means of escape. It must be bad to get her so agitated. Trying to get her attention again, he sees her head suddenly turn toward him, her eyes open wide and filling with tears.

Before he knows what’s happening, he hears the door to his cell open and a pair of orderlies rush in, grabbing him and dragging him out as they inject him with something in his arm. As he’s being dragged out, he sees Liz plaster herself against the glass, crying out to him before everything goes dark.

What seems like hours pass before Liz sees anyone. Finally, Dr. Weston appears in front of her cell and stops to look at her with a passive look on his face. She already knows what he’s thinking and she tries to remain calm so he doesn’t guess that she can read his thoughts as if he were speaking them aloud to her.

He’s separated them for a purpose. He doesn’t want them to see each other, to gain comfort from each other’s presence. He’s thinking about the emotional bond between her and Max and he’s thinking about what’s being done to Jim at that very moment, wondering if she has any idea what he has planned for her.

Dr. Weston opens her door slowly, cautiously, and takes a seat. His gaze remains on Liz, trying to anticipate anything she may try. Surprising him, she takes a seat on her bed facing him and doesn’t say anything.

“It seems we have a problem, Liz.” He begins. Waiting for a response and not getting one, he continues, “We’ve had some trouble. It seems that things didn’t go so smoothly down in Mexico. I’m afraid I’ve had to make some decisions about your arrangement here on my own.”

Liz raises an eyebrow, knowing now that his boss, Gerard, has gone missing and several agents were killed in their ambush in Mexico City. Weston is afraid of another attempted rescue. That’s why he’s separated them.

“You don’t seem curious.” He says.

“So what if I am? You’ll tell me what you want to tell me, it doesn’t matter.” She replies.

He nods in understanding and sits back in his chair. Gauging her reaction closely, he says, “Your friends were unfortunately killed in the scuffle.” When she doesn’t respond, he continues, “You don’t believe me.”

She waits a few moments before answering. “What’s the point of this? Why are you telling me this?” She knows he’s lying. He wants her to think they’re all on their own in here. That there’s no hope of anyone coming for them. Does that mean that they are coming? Or does he just want to mess with her mind?

He looks at her quizzically. “I just thought you’d want to know.”

“Well, now I do. Was there something else?” She looks back at him defiantly.

Sighing, he puts his hands on his knees and stands up. “No. Be ready for more testing in an hour.” He leaves quietly, leaving Liz to stare after him as he walks away.

Harrisonburg, Virginia

After getting checked into a Comfort Inn, everyone gathers in one room to plan their next move. They decided not to go all the way to DC in an effort to keep a low profile.

Not bothering to tie up Gerard anymore, feeling safe that he won’t try to go anywhere, they all look to him to tell them exactly where Max, Liz and Jim are being held.

“Weston no doubt already suspects that I’ve been captured. There’s no way he’ll even allow me to contact him. You won’t be able to use me to get your friends.” He tells them.

Several discussions erupt as Isabel sits back and watches Gerard. Arguments are starting about what they should do next. An idea is forming in her head and it takes her a few minutes to get everyone to quiet down and listen to her.

Keeping her eyes on Gerard, she says, “What if we let him go?”

“What?!” Several voices cry out at once.

“You’re kidding, right?” Kyle asks.

“No.” She shakes her head. “He has something that we want and he’s right. If they know we have him, we’ll never be able to bargain him. But what we haven’t thought of is that we have something that he might want.”

She receives some puzzled looks before continuing. “Your daughter. We can give you back your daughter…healthy again.”

Gerard’s mouth drops open and Michael stands up. “What are you talking about?”

She sits back and studies the group. “It’s simple. We let him go. He gets Max, Liz and Jim out of there to a safe location. In return, Max can heal his daughter.”

Jesse nods his head. “It could work.” He turns to look at Gerard. “Could you do it? Could you get them out?”

Gerard is speechless. He can’t even imagine what it would be like to have his daughter healthy again, free of disease. “I…I…don’t know. I could try.”

“Trying isn’t good enough.” Michael says before looking at Isabel. “If he doesn’t do it, we have nothing. He’ll be gone.”

“It’s the only shot we have, Michael.” Isabel says.

“She’s right.” Maria says, walking to Michael and grabbing his arm. She looks at Gerard and says, “You’ll do it? You’ll do it for your daughter?”

Gerard nods mutely and dares to hope that this might actually work. He doesn’t want anything to do with them anymore. He just wants to retire and get on with his life…enjoy the rest of it with his wife and daughter if he can. This case has eaten away 30 years of his life and for what? These kids aren’t a threat to anyone. Even he can see that. They want the same thing he does…freedom. “I’ll do it. I’ll do anything I have to to get your friends back to you. I give you my word.”

Serena steps toward him, then turns toward the group. “I believe him. His word is all we have, but I believe him.”

Michael seems to be the only skeptical one and all eyes fall to him. He runs a hand through his hair and says, “I guess that’s it, then. It’s the best idea we have. I just hope it works or we’re screwed.”

Gerard nods and says, “You should move to another location after I leave so I don’t know where you’re at. If I don’t know where you are, I can’t tell anyone. I assume you all have a system in place to meet up if you ever got separated?” When he sees them nod he says, “I guess I have to trust you as much as you’re trusting me. My daughter is at Georgetown University Hospital.”

“We’ll find a way to get Max to her as soon as we get them back.” Isabel tells him. “You should go now. We’ll leave here after you.”

Gerard tentatively stands up and looks around. “I know it’s not worth much, but I’m sorry. I’m sorry you’ve had to live the life you’ve led because of me. I’ll do everything I can to make sure this case is closed. I can’t promise anything because I report to others in charge, but I’ll try. I…I was wrong. About you. I was wrong.”

He swallows and looks at each person, alien and human, attempting to convey his sincerity. He sees hope on their faces, but deep down, all he sees is defeat. And something inside of him breaks at the thought that he’s the reason for it, and he’s the reason that they’ll probably have to live the rest of their lives on the run.

He walks slowly toward the door, halfway expecting someone to stop him. But when no one does, he takes one last look, opening the door, and says, “I feel privileged to have been able to get to know each of you. Thank you.” He steps outside the door then, shutting it quietly behind him, leaving a silent room full of people behind him.

~TBC~

<img src=http://www.roswell-orbs.com/images/titl ...
