Yep, as in "tea and biscuits". Although "cookies" is just now starting to work its way into the UK vernacular, but only for recipes that are imported from the US-- like, as in your example, oatmeal.
I'm a Yank, but I work for a UK company over the internet, so I speak Brit all day long. Some other good ones, that can get you into WAY more trouble than the cookies, are
Pants or knickers (UK) = underpants (US)
trousers (UK) = pants (US)
waistcoat (UK) = vest (US)
vest (UK) = wifebeater (men's sleeveless undershirt) (US)
So, complementing someone on their pants or vest could be very, very awkward.

Hi, there! *waves*
I'm Gioia aka Joia. Like ponygirl, I'm in Missouri, but no horses at our house!

: I'm a relatively new fan to Doctor Who. I was introduced just before series 3 of New Who began. I've been a huge fan from the moment Nine told Rose to "Run!" I love Nine, Ten, and all the companions. I read pretty much anything, but I'm only just beginning to learn about Doctors #1-8.
I knew of Majiklmoon (and cookie and cardinalgirl!) from
Roswell days. Otherwise, I'm really new to the fandom itself! I love all of y'alls fics and have been lurking over at Teaspoon and on your LJs for ages, but was always too nervous to get involved. So it's awesome to see y'all over here!
Thanks for opening up the forum, majiklmoon!

And I'll take the above as a hint to introduce myself as well.
I'm cardinalgirl, or Lisa, or tiemeinbows, if you're on LJ. I am brand new to the fandom... had seen eps here and there since S1 of the new incarnation started playing in the U.S. but I'm one of those insane people who
really, really like to see things in order, so I waited until I had a chance to watch all of the episodes in order. Which of course I accomplished just in time for David Tennant's Hamlet hiatus.
I haven't read any Who fic yet, minus lurking in on some of the drabbles that were being posted on the auction forums, but it would not take me much persuasion at all, I think, to add this to the very small list of fandoms I can read fanfiction in (which is pretty much Roswell and HP).
So yes, I know Gioia and majiklmoon. I've hung around in circles with cookie, too, though we don't really know each other. (Hi, cookie.) But I'm looking forward to meeting some Whovenites! Outside of the author auction I'm on a strict Original-Only writing diet, so aside from drabbles, which do tend to be my cheat, I probably won't be writing fanfic for Doctor Who... but I'm a good reader. Promises.
ETA: I love Nine,
and Ten, and think Rose, Martha and Donna are all varying levels of awesome. I'm a hopeless goner for Rose especially (how could I not be?) but I think Catherine Tate's awesome is high up there, and I love Donna and the Doctor's not-romantic-at-all relationship.

*sheepish grin* I have a shameful admission to make... I never made the connection between your posting name (cardinalgirl) and your LJ name (tiemeinbows). Now I feel silly. I always wondered who this tiemeinbows chick was that all my Roswell friends knew! LOL!
Welcome to the madhouse! Yeah, the timing sucks, but think of it this way - you've got LOTS of time to discover fandom before the show comes back!
If you do decide to dig into fic, I will happily pass on recs!

Cookie, we should start a rec thread here! Your fic recs are outstanding, and I've been dying for some time to start up a list of recs for Doctor Who.
I think I'm going to run open up a thread now. Will you post some of yours there? We have to do what we can to get Lisa addicted!

haha Yeah, sorry about that. I got tired of being asked if I was from St. Louis and who my favorite player was, etc... since my sn didn't come from that and I don't know a thing about sports. lol

Hey there! I don't mind at all! I'm in Blue Springs, just a straight shot down I-70 from you! My sister & brother-in-law have actually been interested in buying a home in your area. They like Columbia for all it's city conveniences, but really want to live in a small town like those surrounding Columbia. According to my B-I-L, it's beautiful out by you!

I'm very much a New Who fan. Converted by my best friends and hooked beyond imagination - it's like CRACK, I tell you! And I love it! I've tried to watch some Classic Who, but it doesn't quite do it for me on the same level.
I don't write fic much anymore, but I've got a few one-shots I might pull out for the board!
I recognize some of y'all's names from LJ, and look forward to seeing you around here!

Hi - maybe you met me during the auction, maybe you didn't. I'm Sock Puppet. I have no worldly knowledge of Doctor Who, but i'm willing to learn, so please post your fics here so I can read and absorb knowledge. Sock Puppets are pretty darn absorbable you know

LOL, majiklmoon! When I met Cookie in February, I kept threatening to go all fangirly on her periodically. I really should've brought some of her fanfic with me and made her autograph it!
And Sock Puppet! And here I thought you were just sticking around during the auction to add some pretty to the place! Look at you being all active and stuff! You should try to get majiklmoon to start watching Doctor Who!

*blushes* You are far too kind. My fics aren't THAT good. I was just crazy and obsessed enough to write compulsively for 4-5 years. LOL.
I don't need to be bribed! Just need the time to be able to sit down and post. I'd happily do so if you want me to repost...
gioia wrote:I really should've brought some of her fanfic with me and made her autograph it!
*raises eyebrow at Gioia* And I think I told you that I'd disown you as a friend if you did

Anyway, my signature is ugly. No one wants it on anything...except maybe a check

And even then I can't guarantee that the check would be good half the time

Pshaw. Like a little friendly threat of disownment would've stopped me if I had put my mind to it! One of these days, Anne, one of these days! [/stalker mode]

Hello, I'm here from the auction as well (still waiting with bated breath for my prompt!).
I just started writing fanfic of any kind over the summer, and Doctor Who is the only thing that's ever inspired me to do so. I'm a fan of New Who, not so much with the Classic, though I try to stay abreast of need-to-know Classic Who canon. I'm also momacress on livejournal, though the_tenzo is my fic journal and also the name I write under on Teaspoon. I live in Pittsburgh, PA with my very understanding husband, two big dogs, and two cats.
I write the Tenth Doctor exclusively because, well, because I kind of am in love with him. No offence, Nine, you were awesome and I enjoyed the heck out of your stories but...yeah. I'm a Ten fangirl, and a Ten/Rose shipper (though not the crazy kind, I hasten to add!). My current obsession, however, is alt!Ten, and I've got a serious weak spot for the new but completely brain-melting genre of Ten-on-Ten smut.

Alt!Ten was Rusty's gift to fangirls, I am telling you guys!
Anyway, so that's my story and I am sticking to it.
Also, I am one of the mental people getting on a plane and flying to the UK in January to see Hamlet.

OMG, do I ever agree with you! He's our way of having Rose/Ten adventures forever, without running into any complications caused by "reality," LOL. I love how easy it is for fic'ers to come up with absolutely ANYTHING now, thanks to alt!ten!

How cool!!!! Cookie just got back from England where she got to see him. Were you there on opening night,
Cookie? I can't remember. Also, did you EVER post your write-up on watching the play?

You will absolutely love it. I went to the very first show and it was unbelievable, and from what I hear from people who have done since, it's only gotten better.
