Chapter 23.

A few weeks after Kyle and Tess's dinner date...

Even though it had only been a short time since they first met, Kyle had slowly become very important to Tess. She was starting to have really strong feelings towards him. The kind that she had never experienced with any other man until Kyle came into her life. These feelings were so powerful within her that she was dreading what she was about to tell him.

She was sitting at one of the coffee tables in the bookstore waiting for him to come downstairs from his apartment. The blonde girl behind the counter was still giving her the evil eye but she’d gotten used to it now.

As Kyle walked out from the back room he took a quick glance around the cafe section and saw that it was virtually full. He noticed Tess sitting there alone and huge smile appeared on his face as he headed straight for her table.

“Tess, I didn’t know you were here. Have you been waiting long?”

“No, not long," Tess shook her head "I was just waiting for you to finish your break.”

“You should have said something, told someone you were here. Someone would have called me down!”

“No, seriously I’ve only been sitting here five minutes Kyle, it is fine honestly.” smiled Tess. The way Kyle seemed so eager just to be around her caused a warm feeling of happiness to fill her body.

“So looking forward to our date tomorrow night?” he asked her with a big smile on his face.

Kyle watched as the smile quickly dropped from her face and his stomach clenched.

Uh oh this can't be good?! Was she not happy anymore? Did she not want to go out with him anymore? Had he done something wrong? Said the wrong thing?! Not said the right thing?!

Kyle quickly tried to run through his mind everything he had ever said to Tess, or around her, in hopes of maybe coming up with whatever it was he had done wrong.

“Kyle I was really looking forward to our date tomorrow night ...”

“Okkaayy," Kyle laughed nervously "I know there is a BUT in there somewhere.”

“Well you see it’s my birthday tomorrow but my dad asked me out for dinner that night. He only told me about it this morning so that’s why I’m cancelling on you so late. I’m so incredibly sorry. I would much rather go out on our date to be honest.”

Kyle’s stomach unclenched and he gave her a nervous laugh.

“Phew!" Kyle blew out a deep breath he didn't know he had been holding "God Tess for a minute there I thought you were going to break up with me.”

“WHAT?!” Tess sat up straighter in her seat and gave Kyle a shocked look "Why on Earth would you think I was here to break up with you?!"

“Oh I don’t know. You were sitting here looking all serious and...and well I don’t know really. I’m just being stupid you know...old crazy Kyle here. So it’s your birthday tomorrow then?!” he said quickly changing the subject.

“Yeah but I would much rather be spending it with you!”

“Well I could always go with you” smiled Kyle "Meet your dad and everything."

Now it was Tess’s stomach that lurched. She desperately wanted Kyle to be there to celebrate her birthday. Hell she wanted him to be part of all aspects of her life, not just their time at the bookstore but that would mean he would have to meet her father, and that was going to be impossible.

Her dad would go ballistic if he found out about Kyle. He would consider him a poor/loser type guy. Going nowhere just serving coffee to the thousands! She could hear his voice now ringing in her ears.

'What the hell is wrong with you Tess?! Those types of people are below us! Oh they're fine to work for us, wash our cars, clean our house, and pick up after us, their betters....but to date?! No daughter of mine will be dating some poor white trash book seller!"

How was she going to tell Kyle this without hurting him?

“Easy Tess.....you lie to him,” Tess thought sadly to herself.

“Erm, well my dad wouldn’t be expecting you Kyle and we only have reservations for two...and,” god she just wanted to cry right now. How the hell was she going to explain this to Kyle?

Sensing her utter despair he saved her from having to say the words he knew were coming.

“Hey,” he said as he put his finger under her chin and lifted her face so she had no other option than to look at him, “It’s just not the right time, right? Don’t worry about it Tess. Go and have fun with your dad tomorrow, okay?”

He saw the relief wash over her beautiful face and he was rewarded with one of those smiles that would make any mans insides melt.

Tess leaned over the table, gently grabbed his face in her hands and kissed him senseless.

“Thank you Kyle,” she breathed as she finally detached her lips from his.

Kyle just nodded; too dazed by the kiss he’d just received. Hell just for that it was worth it!

Later the next day...

*KNOCK* *KNOCK*

"Yes?" asked Tess from where she stood in front of the mirror in her bedroom.

Charles, their butler stuck his head around the door.

"The limo is outside waiting for you Ms. Harding."

"Thank you Charles," Tess turned from the mirror to smile at him, she spun around so he could see how she was dressed. "Well how do I look?"

She didn’t want her father to be disappointed so she went for something simple but stunning at the same time. She was wearing this light blue, jersey dress. It had spaghetti straps and a massive V shape down the back which just ended at her lower back. She looked positively radiant tonight. She’d also gotten her hair done at the salon, along with her nails and she was wearing some of the jewellery her father had given her on past birthdays, all this just to please him, although she didn’t realise it at the time.

Charles came fully in to the room and gave Tess a very polite look over.

"Why, you look completely exquisite if I do say so myself Ms. Harding."

"Thank you Charles," blushed Tess.

"And if I can say, you look exactly like your mother when she was your age."

"Really?"

“Oh yes,” nodded Charles as a very far off look came across his face. “Often do I think of her, how much more life and humanity was in this house when she was here.”

Shaken out of his thoughts Charles turned back to Tess and smiled at her.

“Not only do you look just like her my dear but you also have the same sweet soul that she had.”

Tess fought back her tears as she quickly wrapped her small arms around Charles and gave him a strong hug.

"Thank you."

Charles easily returned the hug, patting Tess on the back.

"Now, now Ms. Harding we don't want you to be late for your dinner date with your father."

"Yeah..." Tess broke the hug and checked her eye make up to see if any errant tears had escaped. When that was done she grabbed her purse off the nearby night stand and headed for the door. Before stepping out Tess turned to look at Charles who was still standing in her room.

"Thank you Charles."

"It was all my pleasure Ms. Harding," smiled Charles.

Tess ran down stairs, waved bye to the rest of the staff and then walked gracefully to the limo. She couldn’t wait for tonight to begin. It was the first time her father had invited her anywhere on her birthday. He usually either missed it or just gave her something in the morning and then left her alone for the rest of the day. As if one present could make up for his lack of understanding or love.

The driver got out of the car and opened the door for her. He then proceeded to drive to the location that Mr Harding had given him earlier on during the day.

“Erm, so where are we going?” asked Tess slightly nervous but excited at the same time.

“To The Regency, Ms Harding,” the driver smiled at Tess through the rear view mirror.

“You're kidding me?” asked Tess incredulously.

“No ma’am.”

Tess sat back in her seat in total shock. The Regency was one of the most expensive and fancy restaurants in the area, even for people in her social circle. So much so she herself had never been there and that was saying a lot! You had to book like six months in advance to get into the place. She was sure her father wouldn’t have planned that far ahead.

Once reaching the restaurant the driver helped Tess out of the limo and then escorted her to the door.

“Your father will be here shortly,” he said as he made his way back to the limo.

She entered the fabulous restaurant and gasped. It was the most beautiful room she had ever seen. It was modern in its decoration, with crisp white table cloths, rich black leather seats and a wonderful array of light sculptures. It was truly fascinating.

As she walked further into the restaurant a woman with the most gorgeous dress she had ever seen came up to her.

“Can I help you miss?” asked the lady.

Tess was shocked as she realised that this woman was front of house manager and she was there to arrange the seating.

“Erm, yes I’m waiting for my father, Ed Harding, to join me. I believe he’s booked a table for two.”

“Ah yes Miss Harding. We were informed of your arrival. You father has reserved the best table in the establishment. Please come this way.”

Tess followed the beautiful woman through a set of double doors which led to a private room overlooking a river. There were a few other exclusive guests here. Some she recognised and said hello, others she didn’t recognise.

She sat down at the table by the window and watched as the lights danced off the surface of the water, like sparkling diamonds on black velvet.

“Your waiter for tonight will be François. He will be with you shortly to take your drinks order. Please enjoy your meal,” said the lady as she laid a menu in front of Tess and another one at the empty seat opposite her.

No sooner had the lady left her table, François appeared.

“Mademoiselle, your father has ordered a Krug 1995 Clos d'Ambonnay to be opened at the table, would you like me to do that now?”

“Erm, no actually I think I’d better wait for my father to get here,” said Tess. She realised that the bottle of champagne her father ordered was a very expensive one and she didn’t want to start it before her father had arrived. She had a funny feeling he would be extremely annoyed if she did.

“May I just have a glass of white wine please?” asked Tess.

“Certainly Mademoiselle,” replied the waiter as he placed the bottle of champagne back into the sliver ice bucket and placed it near the table. She loved the atmosphere here but what she liked most of all was the view from the windows that surrounded the whole room.

The waiter left to get her wine and Tess began to study the menu. As she read down the list of delights that she could choose from, her stomach started to rumble. There was some weird stuff on there that she would never attempt to eat like Octopus or Escargot but the rest of what was on offer sounded delicious.

The waiter returned to serve her drink and offered her a warm bread roll and butter. He sliver served the bread roll onto her plate and then he excused himself.

She sat for a little while just taking in her beautiful surroundings. There was no doubt her father had spared any expense for this birthday. Maybe her not being around him so much was starting to have an effect on him. Maybe, just maybe he was starting to miss her company.

She checked her watch for the first time and realised that her father was already half an hour late but this to her was no big deal. He was always getting delayed in meetings so she was used to it. Plus he’d done a lot tonight to make sure her birthday was a happy one so she could forgive him for being a little late.

She sat there drinking her wine and taking in the sights. She sighed as she finally relaxed for the first time in a long time. Tonight would probably be the best night she and her father had shared in a long time.

Two hours later she was still sitting at the table alone and getting incredibly angry. She was so embarrassed because the waiter had been coming over to the table at regular intervals to ask her if she wanted to order dinner yet, or whether she would like another drink, or open the bottle of champagne.

By the fifth time he’d approached her she could see the look of sorrow in his eyes. He knew that she’d been stood up and he felt sorry for her. She couldn’t believe after all the trouble he’d gone through, organising the limo, the champagne and a table at the most exclusive restaurant, that he hadn’t even bothered showing up.

No phone calls, no message, nothing. She decided to take a look at her cell phone just to make sure she hadn’t missed a call from him and realised that she didn’t have any reception. So she moved outside to call her dad.

A small drizzle of rain had started to fall, turning the night chilly, so Tess stood under the small canopy outside the front door as she tried to get a signal for her phone.

When the phone finally found a signal she punched in the number to her father's personal phone a direct number straight to him, a number only a few select people knew. After a few short rings it was picked up.

"Ed Harding?" the gruff voice of her father came through to her phone.

"Daddy?"

"Tess why are you calling me now? I'm very busy..."

"Daddy..." Tess hesitated a bit, almost scared to death for interrupting her father, "...where are you?"

"At my office...I'm in a board meeting. We're discussing the Johnson merger and it's running late..."

"But daddy, what about our dinner?"

"Dinner?"

Tess's heart started to sink 'No he couldn't have forgotten could he?'

"The dinner we were both supposed to have tonight, together."

"Oh that...I forgot," Ed Harding said as a matter of fact, as if he was discussing the weather instead of his relationship with his daughter. "Look Tess the meeting is about to start again..."

"Daddy..." Tess interrupted him once again, but this time her next question would decide their whole relationship "...daddy do you even know what today is?"

"Well of course I do, what kind of stupid question is that?!"

Ed's shocked voice caused Tess to have a moment of happiness surge through her. 'He hadn't forgotten me after all!' But Tess's brief moment of happiness came crashing down by the next words out of her father's mouth.

"It's Friday."

Tess just stood there in shock looking at her cell phone.

'He doesn't even know that today is my birthday.'

"I've got to go now Tess I'll talk to you when I get home."

Hearing the loud click Tess let her cell phone slip out of her hand and bounce hard on the concrete sidewalk, busting into a hundred pieces. It felt like a cold wet blanket had just covered over her body. Everything in her suddenly just went dead and numb.

The small drizzle from a second ago was now a down pour, the kind of rain that gets you instantly soaked but Tess didn’t even notice. She started to run as fast as she could trying to get as much distance between herself and that restaurant as she could. This had to be the worst night she’d ever had. She started to think about all the times her father had let her down and tonight was the final straw.

Her foot caught in something as she was running and went flying onto the wet concrete path. She’d scrapped her hands and knees but her brain didn’t register the pain because the pain in her heart was greater.

As she lay face down she started to sob uncontrollably. The sort of heart wrenching sobs that leave you wracked with tiredness. As the cold of the concrete started to seep through her dress she managed to stand up and continue walking whilst the rain and tears stung her face.

Her dress literally clung to her body leaving nothing to the imagination and her beautiful hair, that she’d taken so much care over, was no plastered to her face and shoulders. She had mascara tear tracks running down her face, her eyes and nose were red from all the crying and her heart literally ached with sadness.
*******

*BANG* *BANG* *BANG*

"Yeah, yeah I'm coming; hold your damn horses would you!" Kyle shouted as he came down the stairs that connected the bookstore to the apartment above.

He just sat down to enjoy his favourite TV show NCIS when someone started pounding on the door at the front of the bookstore. Due to the rain and it being night Kyle couldn't get a good look at who was out there, so he put on the outside light as he opened the door.

"Look I'm sorry but we're clo..."

Whatever Kyle was going to say next was lost, for there standing out in the pouring rain, soaked to her skin was his beautiful Tess. He couldn’t believe the pain that was in her eyes and he knew the night hadn’t gone well.

When he took in the sight of her, he simply stepped out into the rain, scooped her into his strong arms and carried her up to his apartment. He sat her gently down on the side of his bed, wrapped a warm dry blanket around her and then kneeled down in front of her.

“Tess, where are your shoes?” asked Kyle as he noticed her bare, dirty feet.

“Huh ... what?” asked Tess in a dazed voice as if she'd just noticed that Kyle was there kneeling right in front of her.

“Your shoes honey, where are they?” he asks more softly as he pulled her wet stockings off and threw them to one side.

“...um ..." Tess looked down at her feet, "I don’t know...”

“How did you get those scrapes on your hands and knees?” he asked her again.

“...um, I don’t know...”

“It’s okay, hold on just a second,” Kyle said as he stood up and went into a different room.

Tess started to hear running water and some banging coming from another room. A second or two later Kyle came back into the room with a towel slung over his shoulder.

“Hey I’ve got a nice hot bath running for you,” said Kyle as he came over to help Tess up out of the chair, “...and I’ve put some clean dry clothes in the bathroom for you. When you get out of the tub you can get dressed into them.”

Kyle helped Tess to her feet, took her into the bathroom and sat her down on the closed toilet seat. He walked over to the bath and turned off the water and placed his finger in it to check the temperature.

“Good nice and warm ... okay, I’ll just step outside while you get undressed.”

Tess suddenly started to panic. She grabbed hold of Kyle's arm with both hands and held on tight. She tried to say something but every time she opened her mouth nothing came out.

“Hey,” he once again kneeled down in front of her, gently cupping her face with his hands.

“It’ll be okay. I’ll just be outside,” he said pointing to the bathroom door.

“You ... you won’t go far? You ... you won’t leave me alone?”

Her voice sounded so scared, so alone that Kyle just wanted to gather her back into his arms and protect her, but instead he just smiled at her.

“Hon, you couldn’t get rid of me if you tried. I’ll just be on the other side of this door while you get undressed and in the tub, okay?”

“O-okay,” replied a shaky Tess.

Once Kyle was out the door she let the wet and ruined dress fall to the floor, soon her undergarments joined it. Sliding into the warm tub Tess pulled her knees up too her chest and once again let the tears fall down her face.

From his spot on the outside of the door Kyle listened to Tess as she got into the tub and started crying. Placing his forehead against the wood Kyle leaned into the small flimsy door that separated him from Tess.

“God what the hell happened to her tonight?"

Chapter 24.

As the warm bath water started to invade her body, Tess began to feel it wash away the cold numbness she felt at her father’s rejection. Unfortunately this also had a bad side effect, now every single muscle in her body ached due to her falling and running in the rain.

She sank beneath the water surface, submerging her head and holding her breath. She looked out at the world from beneath the water and wondered to herself if anyone would really notice her missing. Could she do it? Was she brave enough? Who the hell would miss her if she never came from beneath the surface again? She stayed like that until the need for oxygen started to burn her lungs. She slowly came out of the water and started to wash her hair.

“Kyle, are you still here?” she shouted as she massaged the shampoo through her hair.

Kyle's voice drifted through the closed bathroom door.

“Yes I’m still here. I told you I wouldn't go anywhere.”

The fact that he’d stuck to his promise and not left her alone made her feel better. To be honest she couldn’t remember how she’d even gotten to the store. She didn’t know how long she’d been running. All she could remember was the feeling of being alone, alone without a mother or a father, a father, who it seemed, cared more for his multimillion dollar company than he ever did for her.

With this thought she started to sob again.

She heard a gentle knock before Kyle's voice came through the door again.

"Tess sweetie, are you okay in there?"

"Yes..." Tess used her hand to wipe the tears off her face "....I'm, I’m fine. I'll be out in a sec."

"It's okay, take your time but yell if you need anything, okay?"

"Okay."

As soon as she finished bathing, Tess got out of the tub and dried herself off. Reaching down she grabbed the spare set of clothes Kyle had given her to wear, a pair of boxer shorts and football jersey. After slipping the, rather large, USC football jersey over her head she held it against her nose and could smell the aroma that was Kyle Valenti. She closed her eyes and felt a wave of happiness and safety wash over her.

She came out of the bathroom still drying her hair with the towel. Kyle gently took her by the arm and sat her back down on the bed.

“Do you want to talk about it Tess?” asked Kyle.

She dropped the towel she was using onto the bed and tears filled her eyes again. Kyle wanted to kick himself for bringing the subject back up, just as she seemed to have finally calmed down.

Now although Kyle had always tried to be there for Tess he was at a loss of what to do here. Crying women were NOT something he was used to dealing with. Growing up, his sister and his mother had never been known as the crying types. Had you done something to either Maria or Amy Valenti, they were more likely to smack you around the back of the head than cry.

The tears that were swimming in her eyes started to gather at the corner. She blinked slightly and one fell down her cheek. Kyle gently rubbed the tear away with the pad of his thumb while mentally cursing himself for bringing up the subject again.

“Hey listen, if this is too hard for you to talk about you can wait until you are ready to tell me,” said Kyle in a gentle voice.

“No Kyle ... I ... I want to tell you everything but it’s just so hard to finally realise ...” the sobs came in earnest again and Kyle just wrapped his arms around her and held her close to him until she was ready.

After a little while she finally calmed down enough, raised her head from his shoulder and looked into his eyes.

"I'm sorry, I don't mean to come here and ruin your night by acting like such a blubbering idiot," she gave him a weak smile.

Her attempted to try to lighten the mood fell a little flat.

"I'm not worried about my night Tess," Kyle shook his head.

"What I am worried about, is you. I know something bad happened tonight. You’re supposed to be having fun with your dad right now, instead of here crying your eyes out. What the hell happened?”

Kyle was becoming increasingly concerned. Did someone mug her on the way home or something? Is that how come she had those cuts along her knees and hands?

His anger rose slightly at he thought of anyone laying a harmful hand on her. Why he'd track them down and kill them himself, Buddha be damned!

“I’m not as important as his meeting, Kyle,” said Tess in a very sad tone.

"Who’s meeting sweetie? Who are we talking about here?"

"My dad, his meeting."

“So it’s because of him you are in this state?” asked Kyle incredulously.

Tess just nodded her head as another tear streaked down her face.

“What the hell happened Tess?”

So Tess sat there and poured her heart out to Kyle. How wonderfully happy she had been at her father finally making an effort on her birthday. How he’d ordered her one of the best, most expensive, champagnes that the restaurant stocked.

How it took months in advance to book a table there ... and then how she sat there for over two hours waiting for him to show up. Having everyone in the restaurant giving her pity stares as they realised she was being stood up. How she had finally phoned her father to find out where he was only for him to give her the brush off because he was at a meeting and how the fact that he’d forgotten it was her birthday.

As Kyle took in more of the story his anger grew to palpable proportions. What was wrong with this man? Did he not realise that he had the most beautiful daughter in the world? Did he not realise that although sometimes she got things wrong, she was actually quite an intelligent individual!

Her father needed his head testing as far as Kyle was concerned. He suddenly had an idea of how to put a smile on her face.

“Listen Tess, I’ll just be a minute okay?”

He went to walk away but Tess latched onto his arm and held on for dear life. He used his other hand and gently ran it through her hair.

“Now, now, I just need to go and put your dress in the dryer and then I need to run downstairs to get you a nice warm cup of Latté, is that okay?”

Relaxing a little, Tess let her death grip on Kyle's arm go and nodded “Yeah that would be great, thanks Kyle.”

Making his way to the bathroom Kyle scooped up Tess's clothing off the floor and then gave her one last reassuring look before quickly making his way to the laundry room. Opening the dryer door he was about to put her dress into it when he stopped himself in mid throw.

Moron! This isn't one of your old Guns n Roses tour shirts that you can just throw in for a quick hot dry and tumble! Damn thing feels like silk and is probably worth more than you make in a month...or two...or three! Read the damn label and see the right way to dry this thing!

Holding the dress up Kyle begin fumbling around looking for a label with washing/drying instructions on. Not finding it at the top, where it would be on all of his clothing he began to turn the dress inside out.

"Where the hell are you? Ah there you are!" finally finding the tag, Kyle held it up close to his face to get a better look at it.

"Wash in only, yeah, yeah, yeah I don’t need to freaking wash it, I just want to dry it. Okay here it is, dry on a low heat only, okay."

Placing the dress gently into his dryer Kyle shut the door, turned the knob over to low heat and then left as the dryer began working its magic.

He then headed down the stairs and prepared a nice hot Latté for her and also picked up his surprise. When he walked back into the room where Tess was, his breath caught in the back of his throat. There she was, sitting in the middle of his bed with her legs underneath her, her hair all wet and stringy, sticking to her skin and he’d never seen his jersey look so good on anyone before, including himself.

He placed the Latté on the end table next to her and then instructed her to close her eyes. After she did as she was told Kyle sat down beside her and then pulled the little cupcake from behind his back and lit the candle.

"Okay you can open your eyes now."

Kyle started singing Happy Birthday to her and as soon as she opened her eyes.

She couldn’t believe that he’d gone to the trouble for her. He’d even ordered in a special cake with a strawberry topping on it.

She looked at Kyle in awe. Nobody had ever done something as thoughtful as that for her.

Kyle noticed the way she was looking at the small strawberry cupcake and just shrugged and smiled.

“Well you said you liked strawberry stuff so I got my brother in law, Michael, to make some up especially for you. For, you know, when you stopped by.”

Tears pooled into her eyes, she scooted over closer to Kyle. She gently blew out the candle and took the cupcake out of Kyle’s hand, placed it onto the table next to her Latté and then turned back towards Kyle.

“You remembered I said that?” asked Tess.

“Of course I remembered!” Kyle smiled a huge adorable grin

"But that was months ago."

"So?" Kyle looked a little confused now.

“Why did you remember it?” asked Tess, curious now.

“Well you said you liked it and it was your favorite ... so I remembered!” said Kyle shrugging his shoulders as if it was no big deal.

That sentence literally made Tess melt. She’d never had a man who’d paid so much attention to her and she loved that feeling.

She closed the distance between them and kissed him like she’d never kissed anyone before. All her emotions came forth from that kiss and it took his breath away. She brushed her tongue along his lip and he opened to her gladly.

The kiss became more passionate, fierce and Tess put her hands under his T-shirt and started to run them over the taut muscles of his impressive chest. God she loved this man. She knew then that it was the right time.

His heart was racing, his blood pumping through his veins and he was just about to lose himself into the sexual haze when Amy Valenti’s voice suddenly spoke in his mind.

Remember Kyle, you should never ever take advantage of a woman when she is vulnerable.

Kyle broke away from the kiss long enough to get out a few words.

“Tess maybe we ...”

But that was all he got out before Tess was on him again, kissing him passionately.

Remember Kyle, that you should never do something that either one of you will wake up and regret in the morning!

"Tess..." Kyle said in between kisses "...sweetie..." more kissing. Finally Kyle had to put both his hands on Tess's shoulders and gently pushed her back a bit.

“Hey Tess, we shouldn’t be doing this right now. You’re upset over your dad and you aren’t thinking straight right now. I don’t want you regretting this in the morning,” he said with a gentle tone.

Tess’s face turned hard, “Kyle, you think too much,” she said as she attacked his lips again.

She broke the kiss briefly to pull his shirt off and then continued to kiss him while dropping the garment to the floor. Again she pressed her body tight to his for some more kissing. She took a step back, stared into his eyes and started to raise his jersey off of her.

Remember Kyle, a gentleman does what's right for a lady even if it puts his needs second.

“For god sakes MOM GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!!!” thought Kyle.

Kyle knew that if Tess went any further with her ministrations he wouldn’t be able to stop her. So he grabbed her by the hands to stop her from removing her shirt and gave one last ditch attempt to talk some sense into her.

“Oh god Tess, believe me I want this so bad but right now you aren’t thinking straight. You’ve had a bad night and you will only regret it in the morning.”

Tess let her hand drop from the jersey she was wearing and she looked deep into Kyle eyes. "I just want to feel like I'm important to someone."

"Oh sweetie you are already important to ME," Kyle pulled her closer to him and buried his face in her neck "And whether we have sex or not doesn’t even factor into it."

Tess lifted her head up off Kyle's shoulder “Do you love me Kyle?”

He answered without hesitation.

“Of course I love you Tess. I love everything about you but you just aren’t thinking straight right now and I couldn’t risk losing you. Why don’t you just sleep on it for tonight and then if you still feel the same way tomorrow then we can tackle that in the morning.”

“Okay,” she replied.

“Okay? Good. I’ll see you in the morning Tess,” replied Kyle as he started to get up off the bed.

“Kyle?”

“Yes.”

“Would you stay here with me tonight? I don’t ... I mean ... I don’t mean in a sexual way. I just need the comfort for tonight,” she explained hoping that he wouldn’t turn her down. Two rejections in one night were enough for her fragile state to handle.

“What in the same bed?”

“Yes Kyle,” she said as she patted the bed they were sitting on.

“Okay.”

Kyle stripped off his shoes and socks and threw them next to his shirt on the floor but that was all he took off. There was no way he was going to be tempted tonight. He had to behave himself, so that meant the jeans stayed on.

He climbed in next to her and wrapped her up in his arms when she scooted in close to him. She lay her head on his chest and fell quickly into a deep sleep. She was so exhausted after the long journey home and from all the crying.

Kyle gently stroked Tess’s hair and listened to her breathing as it became even. He knew that she had fallen asleep. He watched her sleep for a little while, breathed in the scent of her hair and flinched when her soft, silky leg came across his waist. Oh this was going to be one of the hardest things he’d ever had to do in his life but he knew it was for the best.

The warmth of her body and the rhythm of her breathing soon had Kyle drifting off into a deep sleep.

Chapter 25.

After Liz had slammed the mansion's front door shut she marched herself up to her room. Throwing her purse and car keys on her bed. She paced her room, fists clenched into her side, arms straight and with a look of thunder on her face. She had never been so angry in her life!

Just who the hell did Max Evans think he was? There was no way that he could treat HER like this and get away with it. Didn't he know just who the hell she WAS?!

She was Liz Parker!

Men wanted her, women wanted to be her...hell there was probably a large amount of women out there who wanted her too!

She had more money and power than some countries....okay well her father had that but one day it would be hers! So just who the hell did this Max Evan's think he was calling her that?!

What was wrong with that man? First of all he wasn't interested. Then he finally admitted his feelings for her outside by the pool and gave her that amazing passionate kiss and then he virtually called her a slut tonight.

The more she thought about it the angrier she got. Was he simply playing with her so that he could stay in her Daddies good books? Had this been his plan all along? Just string her along until his firm won the contract and then what? He'd dump her?

Something inside Liz snapped and she grabbed her purse and keys off the bed. She charged out of her room, down the stairs and towards the front door.

"CHARLES!" she shouted.

The man quickly appeared from nowhere like a freaking ghost.

"Yes Miss."

"I'm going out."

"But ma'am you just got back from being...uh out?"

Blowing up her bangs in frustrations Liz's rolled her eyes "I have something to deal with. I'm not sure what time I'll be back."

"Are you alright Miss," asked Charles taking in her whole demeanour.

"No, Charles, right now I'm far from okay."

"Should I contact your father? Maybe get security to go with you?"

"No" Liz shook her head "I have some 'personal' business to take care of. Nothing I can't handle and then I'll be back."

With that said she stormed out of the house, slammed the door, got in her car and headed straight for Max's apartment. Tonight she would get the truth out of him. Had he been using her all of this time? Had he only got close to her so that he could win the trust of her father? Surely Max wasn't as callous as that ... was he?

She pushed her foot harder against the accelerator pedal and started to break the speed limit. The faster she went the more free she felt. All this frustration had been building inside of her and tonight it was if a dam had burst.

She screeched around the corner and pulled into Max's apartment complex. She slammed the car into a space not really bothering to check if she was straight or not and got out of the car.

She marched up to the doors and tried to open them but they were locked. She pounded on them until she saw that strange man pop up from behind the counter.

"Great, Mr Weirdo to deal with again," she thought to herself.

He wandered over to the door and opened it with his keys, although he still didn't allow Liz to enter.

"Yes miss?"

"Oh hi Clifford, I was wondering whether I could go up and see Max Evans. We've actually been out together tonight but unfortunately he left something in my car and I'm just returning it."

"What at this hour?" asked Clifford.

"Yes it's some important documents he needs for the morning."

"You know I have to announce you. I'm not sure Mr Evans will appreciate me waking him this early in the morning."

"I can assure you that Mr Evans just left my house not too long ago. I know that he needs these files for the morning."

"Just hold there one second Miss. I'm going to have to check with him first."

"OR ... you could just accept this and allow me to surprise him," said Liz handing Clifford a one hundred dollar bill.

He glanced at the bill waving in her hand. He could lose his job for not announcing her but then that was more than he earned in a day.

"Ah what the hell, go on up!" said Clifford as he snatched the bill from her hand.

"Thanks Clifford," said Liz in a sickly sweet voice.

She marched her way to the lift and made her way to Max's floor.

By the time the lift reached Max's floor she was positively fuming. During the elevator ride she had been thinking about all the times that he had spurned her and now this was her chance to find out the truth but if he'd just been using her ... she was going to make him pay.

Plus having to listen to that shitty elevator music didn't help her mood much either!

As she rounded the corner she saw the door to Max's apartment and it was as if it had a big bull's-eye painted on it just waiting for her fist.

*BAM* * BAM* * BAM* *BAM* * BAM*

After a few seconds with no answer Liz's anger got even hotter and she started shouting.

"Max, I know you're in there, open the damn door!!"
********
Max was in the shower letting the hot water run down his head while he stood there letting the warm water work wonders on his face. He was wondering how his life had suddenly turned to shit.

*BAM* *BAM* * BAM* * BAM* *BAM*

Max jerked his head out from under the flow of water when the banging on his door finally made it through the flowing water and to his ears.

"Great just great," Max muttered under his breath as he pulled the shower curtain back and grabbed the towel off its holder.

Why do people always show up when you're inconvenienced in the bathroom? More to the point, who the hell was knocking on his door at this time of the morning?

Drying himself off with the towel Max then wrapped it around his waist and made his way to his door.
*******
*BAM* * BAM* *BAM* * BAM* *BAM*

Hearing the sound of a door being opened behind her, Liz turned around to see a man curiously sticking his head out of his door having heard the loud banging and shouting.

"What's going on out here?"

"Mind your own damn business!" snapped Liz.

The man only gulped, nodded his head and quickly shut the door with a bang.
*******
Max had just unlocked his door and opened it up part of the way when he heard.....

"Mind your own damn business!"

"Oh shit, it's Liz!!" he thought to himself.

Max looked down in horror as he realized that he only had a towel wrapped around himself. He attempted to shut the door so that he could stall Liz long enough to put some clothes on.
*******
Turning back to Max's door, Liz noticed that it was open just a tad but was quickly closing. Taking a deep breath she lowered her shoulder and plowed into it.
*******
Max almost had the door shut and he was suddenly knocked back hard against the wall by a fuming Liz who stormed her way into his apartment. Using one hand to steady himself he used the other to reach down and make sure his towel was still secure.
*******
Once she was inside his apartment she started in on him straight away. She paced the room with her arms held firmly to her side so that she didn't punch Max in the face.

"You know, I went home and started to think of the last couple of months and I realized something ..."

"Erm ... Liz," Max tried to interrupt her so he could go and put some clothes on.

Liz immediately held up her hand to stop Max mid speech.

"Don't Max, you need to hear this."

"Erm ... okay."

"You've just been playing a game with me. You've pretended that you're interested in me so that you could get close to my father."

"No, Liz it's not like..."

She held her hand up again.

"Please do not insult my intelligence even further. I have made my feelings for you perfectly clear. I don't know how much clearer I could make them, but according to you I'm just some little rich girl, OH NO SORRY, SOME SORT OF SLUT, that is just going to use you and dump you! Well you know what Max I've had enough!"

Max couldn't believe that she thought that way about him. Okay at first he was worried that she was only playing with his emotions but he thought that the last few weeks they'd started to become more of a couple and that idea he could get used to.

He opened his mouth to say something when Liz spun around to face him.

"WELL, AREN'T YOU GOING TO say .... some... erm ... something?" she asked her voice going incredibly squeaky towards the end.

Her mouth had suddenly turned arid and she could hardly form sentences in her brain let alone get her mouth to co-operate. She stood there with her mouth agape and her eyes, wide.

Max blushed at Liz's reaction to his body. She just stood there with her mouth open in utter shock.

Liz's eyes roamed Max's naked feet, up the expanse of his firm muscular legs and thighs, perused the towel area and then raked her eyes over that glorious chest of his. She felt that familiar ache between her legs but was damned if she was going to make a fool of herself again.

A moan of pure agony nearly left her throat, as she thought about the gorgeous man standing before her ... and that fact that he would never be hers.

A slight nervous cough and Max's bright red face made Liz snap out of her sexual haze.

"You know what Max I'm done, finished, no more games. You can have my father's business but as far as I'm concerned, you and I are no longer possible."

She turned and headed straight for the door.

Max had a decision to make either he allowed Liz to leave or he risked everything for the woman he loves.

"No," he whispered seductively, as he gently grabbed her arm and spun her around to face him.

"No, what Max?"

"You can't leave," he stated.

"Let go of my arm Max," said Liz with determination.

"I can't," he replied as he cupped her face and brought his lips to hers in a bruising kiss.

The forgotten towel, that Max was holding, pooled down by his feet.

A massive thanks goes out to LilLoucfer, without her this chapter might never have been written. You are a constant support to me and I can't thank you enough.

Chapter 26.

At first Liz froze, she wasn’t going to let him seduce her again, but the intensity of the kiss made her whole body come to life. She felt as if her blood was rushing along her veins and her heart rate increased. She returned the ferocity of the kiss.

As soon as Liz started to respond to Max’s advances, his body craved her. He ripped his lips from hers, kissed along her jaw line, down to the cradle of her neck where he gently nipped and sucked, leaving his mark on her.

“Oh my god Max!” moaned Liz, as he sucked on the sensitive flesh of her neck, just before he crashed his lips back down on hers. A wetness of unparalleled proportions pooled between her legs.

She could feel his hard arousal pushing against her stomach as the kiss intensified.

Liz pushed Max away from her hard and had a mischievous look in her eyes. A look of confusion came across his face until she seductively licked her lower lip before dropping to her knees.

Before Max knew what was going on, Liz had firmly wrapped her small hand around his straining erection. She started a steady rhythm and watched in fascination as a small amount of pre-cum came out of the tip. She looked up at Max and held his gaze as she shot out her tongue and licked the top so she could get her first taste of Max’s essence.

Her eyes darkened with desire and she encased his throbbing manhood with her warm mouth. He fisted the back of her hair and helped her find a rhythm that was suitable for both of them.

“Fuck Liz,” hissed Max as she encased him completely within her mouth. His moans began to fill the room as his hips started to automatically move with her motions.

Max thought he was going to lose it right there with the sensations she was causing in his body.

“Liz,” it came out more of a moan than a command. “Liz if you don’t stop I don’t know how much ...”

At that moment Liz decided to flick her tongue around the ring of his head and gently grab his tightening sack.

His body started to shake and his movements became frantic as his completion drew near.

“Liz...” it was one last warning to her before he reached the edge of no return.

Liz shot her desired filled eyes open and watched Max as she went down on him for the final time.

“God Liz!” he shouted as his spilled seed slid down her throat.

Liz carried on her movements until he was sucked dry and smiled as she released him from her mouth.

Max tried to get his breathing and body back under control. He’d never really lost it like that before and something inside of him snapped as he watched the confident smirk come across Liz’s face.

She didn’t even know what hit her when Max moved so quick and had pinned her hard against the wall.

“So that’s the game you want to play?” he said, mere inches away from face. So close that she could feel the puffs of his breath on her wet lips.

“I ... I ...” Liz stuttered as she saw the look in his eyes.

“That’s what I thought ...”

Without warning Max grabbed the jacket that Liz was wearing and ripped it open to expose her bra clad breasts.

“Beautiful,” was the only word that slipped through Max’s lips before he lowered the jacket down her arms and let it fall on to the floor. He held Liz’s gaze as he removed the bra straps from her shoulders, slowly, his hand skimming her silky skin as he lowered them.

“Please Max,” pleaded Liz as a shiver of anticipation ran through her body.

“Please, what Liz?” asked Max as he ran his hand down the side of her breast. Her breathing hitched and he couldn’t believe how responsive she was to his touch.

He stole her breath from her lungs as he attached his lips to hers in fiery passion. Their tongues duelled for dominance. Max placed his arm around her back and with one hand flicked open her bra then allowed it to fall to the floor.

His hand moved slowly across her back, her skin smooth against his calloused hands, finally to reach and knead her soft mound of flesh.

His mouth replaced his hand, nipping the soft flesh at the side of her breast. He took her hard peak into his mouth and ran his tongue over the top before swirling it around her areola.

“Max,” moaned Liz, as she felt the burning heat of his mouth against her breast. He used his teeth to gently graze her nipple and then followed with his tongue to take away the sting. She fisted his hair forcing him closer to her breast, if that was possible. She bucked against his straining erection as a bolt of aching pain shot down to her core.

“God Max,” she groaned as her legs closed involuntary, trying to ease the ache between her thighs. Max grabbed her ass and lifted her into his strong arms, her legs automatically wrapping around his waist. She could feel his erection pressing into her core, through her trousers.

The ache between her thighs grew and she wanted so desperately for it to be eased. She could feel herself grow wetter down there and she knew exactly what she needed.

“Please Max,” she panted, as his slow, torturous movements driving her wild.

“Please what, my love?” asked Max. He wanted to hear her say it, to confirm that this wasn’t just one sided, that she actually wanted him as much as he wanted her.

“I need ... I have to,” Liz stuttered to get her words out as his welcomed assault on her body continued.

“Say it Liz,” demanded Max.

“I need YOU Max,” replied Liz.

He placed Liz gently on her feet, unzipped her trousers and pulled them down along with her white lacy thong. The aroma of her arousal invaded his senses and his need to taste her became primal.

He cupped her bare ass and lifted her into his strong arms again. He carried her over to the kitchen counter and gently sat her down on the hard surface.

“Shit, that’s cold,” she hissed as the coolness of the counter hit her skin.

“Not for long Liz,” said Max seductively before lowering himself on his knees.

He slowly parted her legs, he knew then that the scent of her was something he could never get enough of and from the way it glistened; he knew that she was extremely turned on.

He pushed her legs wider, parted her folds and ran his tongue along the full length of her. Liz arched her back which pushed her heat closer to him. As he gently dipped his tongue into her opening, she placed one hand on the counter for balance and the other grasped at his hair.

Max lapped at her juices like a man that had been denied water for far too long, dipping his tongue into her opening, she felt her orgasm build but she still needed more.

His mouth encased her heated core, licking and sucking at the sensitive flesh. He placed two fingers inside of her, god she was tight but incredibly wet. As his fingers went deeper he found the small nub that would bring her so much pleasure. He began a steady rhythm, touching her g-spot on every entry. He knew she was close so he wrapped his lips around her clit and sucked on it hard.

“Max!” screamed Liz, as the orgasm ripped through her body; her walls clamping down on Max’s fingers. He continued his rhythm until she came back down from her high. He licked his lips, enjoying the taste of Liz on them.

As he stood up and looked at Liz he’d never seen her look so beautiful. Her hair was messy, her lips red and swollen from their kisses. He couldn’t wait any longer and slowly slid his straining member into her warmth.

“Yes!” they both hissed as their bodies finally joined.

“Liz, you feel so good,” growled Max as he slowly slid back into her. He could see her glistening juices on his penis as it disappeared into her core. His hands held her hips as he withdrew himself and then pushed back in.

“Max please,” begged Liz, she grabbed his ass cheeks as she desperately tried to get him to thrust into her harder.

A small smirk appeared on his face before he took her nipple into his mouth, sucked hard as he slammed back inside her. Liz wrapped her legs around his waist, welcoming his powerful thrusts. The moans that escaped Liz’s mouth as he rammed inside her only drove him wilder. He unleashed his primal need and took her as fast and as hard as he could. A slight sheen of sweat covered them both as the sound of their bodies smacking each other filled the room.

Every time Max slammed inside her she could literally feel the breath leaving her lungs. White hot, pulses of pure pleasure was running through her veins. She could feel that familiar tightening of her stomach as she started to reach her peak.

As Liz’s walls began to flutter around Max’s cock he growled at the sensation and the fact that her breast where bouncing with their movements.

“Jesus Max, I’m so close!”

“Me too,” said Max as he continued to thrust deep inside her.

He felt her walls clamp down on his cock as her orgasm took over her body. A few more thrusts and Max spilled his seed deep inside her.

Without removing himself from Liz, Max picked her up and carried her to the bedroom. He slowly removed himself from her body and instantly felt the loss. He gently placed her in the bed, got in himself, wrapped her body into his and they both fell into an exhausted sleep.

Chapter 27.

As Tess came out of her sleep induced haze, she didn't recognize where she was at first. It was only when she realized that she was pressed against a rock hard body, surrounded by big and yet very gentle arms that she was in fact in Kyle's room.

She turned around in his arms and placed a gentle kiss on his lips.

"Thank you," she whispered, as she removed herself from his arms, slid out of bed and went around to his side.

As she ran her hand through his hair she started to think back to last night and how he never took advantage of her. Most of the guys she'd previously dated would have taken her up on her offer, but not her Kyle.

She watched, as small snores escaped his slightly parted lips and she couldn't help giving him another quick kiss before she attended to her duties.

"I love you, Kyle Valenti," she whispered, as she left his room. Today she was going to do something special, just for him. She was going to make him breakfast in bed.

As she left his bedroom, she realized that she didn't really know where the kitchen was located so as she walked down the hallway she opened each door to check. First of all she found the bathroom then the living room, laundry room and the final door she tried happened to be the kitchen.

As she pensively walked into the kitchen she realized that she'd never really done this kind of thing before.

"I mean, how hard can this actually be?" she asked herself, "I've seen the servants do this a thousand times!"

She walked over to the fridge and noticed a cook book on the top of it.

"GREAT!!! I can't go wrong now!" she said, to herself, feeling proud that she might just accomplish this task.

"Okay, what can I make him for breakfast?"

She turned to the back of the book and looked at the index. Finally she found pancakes and decided that was the best way to go. Most men love their pancakes in the morning!

"Okay let's see what we have here," she said, as she opened the fridge door, "milk, eggs, fresh fruit, some kind of green stuff, bacon, sausages and some sort of beans or lentils. Okay how about pancakes, freshly squeezed orange juice, a fry up and some strong coffee. Yep that should show him how much he means to me!"

She started to pick out all of the ingredients she would need to make Kyle a spectacular breakfast.

As everything was laid out before her she realized something was missing. She checked the recipe book again and went through her list of what was needed.

"Hmmm pancakes ... okay so I need eggs, check, milk, check, water, check, butter, check, flour, FLOUR, that's what I need!"

She started to open and close every single cupboard in the kitchen until she finally found what she was looking for!

"GREAT, FLOUR!!!" she grabbed the pack and placed it on the counter top with all the other ingredients.

As she opened the pack of flour, she started to get a very itchy nose and sneezed.

A massive flour cloud suddenly erupted around her and Tess couldn't even see the tip of her nose through the white powder that was now floating through the air.

When the dust cleared, Tess noticed that the counter, and everything around, had a thin white covering all over it, just as though the kitchen had gone through a major snow storm. Using her forearm to wipe her face she also noticed, it too came back covered in white.

"Great, just great" muttered Tess.

"Okay, sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl, add eggs and whisk ...what the hell does whisk mean?"

Tess turned to the back of the book again where there was a glossary.

"Whisk, whisk, hmmm ... ah there it is, whisk ... to beat rapidly using a fork, hand or electric whisk to introduce air into a mixture. Ah okay I get it!"

Tess read through the recipe very carefully, making sure to measure out the exact amount of flour, butter, etc. She sifted the flour and salt into the mixing bowl and went back to the instructions.

"Okay, make a well in the center of the flour and add two eggs. Well this is easy!" said Tess, as she plopped two full eggs into the bowl ... shells and all.

"Whisk the eggs and flour together, slowly adding the milk and water mixture..."

By the time Tess had finished following the instructions she turned to look at the picture in the book and then looked at her batter.

"Okay, so I followed the recipe to the letter and yet it doesn't look like the photo in the book or how my family cook Elena used to make them."

Shrugging, she carried on reading the instructions.

"Okay, melt a knob of butter in pan and get it really hot, then turn down to a medium heat. Okay I can do this!"

She turned the ring on the cooker to full blast and let the pan heat until she added the butter. Then turned it down and placed the batter in the pan, along with some freshly chopped fruit.

"Oh Kyle is going to LOVE this!" she squealed.

She decided to concentrate on making Kyle a healthy, freshly squeezed orange juice next. She checked around the kitchen and couldn't find anything that looked like a juicer, so once again she searched through the cupboards. She eventually found a blender and decided that would be good enough.

She proceeded to slice six whole oranges, leaving the seed in and peel on, placed them in the blender and put the lid on.

"Okay, how the hell do I work this thing?"

She turned the dial to one but nothing happened. She tried to switch it to full power, which was six, and still nothing happened.

"What the hell?"

She removed the lid and looked at the contents of the blender before she realised that the damn thing wasn't even plugged in.

"Oh, that's what the problem is!"

As she bent over to plug in the blender Tess forgot that she had not only left the top off, she had also pushed many random buttons on it earlier trying to get it to start.

Much to her horror, as soon as she plugged in the blender, she heard a loud buzzing sound and was soon pelted by bits of orange juice and peel that were flying out of the blender. She, not to mention the kitchen cupboards, counters and floor was plastered with orange.

"SHIT!!" shouted Tess as she grabbed the top of the blender with one hand, using it as a shield as she tried to get it back on top of the blender, while using the other hand to push more random buttons on the blender trying to get it to turn off. Finally hitting the right button, the blender came to a sudden halt.

Standing there, breathing heavily after her ordeal, Tess looked around and realized that the kitchen was now, not only covered in flour, but also globs of blended up oranges. Quite a combination of colors it was!

"Oh for the love of GOD!!!! Why can't I get this one simple thing right?"

She quickly replaced the lid on the blender and continued to pulverize the contents.

Tess found the coffee machine and pulled out Kyle's large can of coffee grounds.

"How much should I put in here?" thought Tess, as she poured in one scoop after another, of the ground coffee, five...six...seven...eight...nine...looking down at the coffee pot and then the can of ground coffee, Tess scooped up one more just to be safe...TEN! She then poured water into the container and switched on the machine.

"At least that's one thing that can't go wrong!"

Now Tess was not stupid, she realized that to make everything come together at once she had to plan her cooking time carefully. She decided that it was time to put on the bacon, sausages and hash browns.

She placed another good knob of butter into a large frying pan, added the bacon, sausages and hash browns, at the same time. She turned the heat to high, hoping that they would cook quicker.

*******

Tess served up the first pancake onto a plate and proceeded to put more butter and batter into the pan to cook. She grabbed the maple syrup, intending to pour some over the newly cooked pancake, when it suddenly slipped through her fingers, spilling the contents onto the floor and also splashing up all over her legs and feet.

"I guess it was lucky it was in a plastic bottle and not glass!" said Tess, as she grabbed the cloth from the sink and started to wipe up the sticky substance.

Once she was happy that most of it was cleaned away she looked back up to the frying pan and started to turn the food over, so it could cook the other side.

And that was when the smoking started.

*******

A loud, screeching, beeping noise finally filtered through Kyle's sleepy head.

"What the.....?" mumbled Kyle, as he sleepily sat up and swung his legs over the side of the bed. As he sat there, for a second trying to get his brain out of the haze, he started smelling an aroma that he wasn't sure was pleasant or not, so he decided to investigate.

As he walked closer to the kitchen he could see smoke coming from the gap at the bottom of the door.

FIRE!!

He ran towards it and shouted for Tess to get out of the house. Somehow the kitchen must have caught fire.

As he flung open the door, he couldn't believe the sight before his eyes.

His kitchen looked like an atom bomb had been dropped on it! Standing in the back of his now destroyed kitchen was Tess, her back to him as she stood on a chair smacking at the screaming smoke alarm with the business end of a broom.

"Shut up you lousy piece of plastic crap!!" she screamed.

Finally having enough Kyle had to shout to be heard over the smoke alarm.

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN HERE??!!"

Startled, Tess spun around in her chair almost tipping it over. Only Kyle's quick reflexes and his grabbing it saved her from a painful fall to the floor. As he straightened the chair back up Kyle got his first good look at Tess from the front.

The top of her head and hair seemed to have some type of orange tint to it. Kyle might have thought hair dye if it wasn't for the rather large section of orange peel that was dangling close to her right ear. Her face and body was covered in some type of white substance which Kyle deduced to be flour and her tiny feet, which were perched in the chair he was holding onto, smelt a whole lot like maple syrup! She was dressed in his USC jersey and these tiny little white boy short panties that showed her firm ass cheeks off to perfection.

Looking down at him Tess' eyes got real big, "Kyle you're awake!!"

"Uh yeah, it was kind of hard not to be with that thing going off," Kyle pointed at the still ringing alarm.

"So, I'm going to ask again, just what in the hell is going on in here?"

"Oh I was just trying to..." *smacks at the alarm again with her broom* "...fix you..." *alarm still going off so Tess smacks it with the broom as hard as she can, breaking off its front cover and making it give one last dying whoop before she turned back to Kyle with a big smile* "...breakfast!"

Holding out his hand, Kyle helped Tess down out of the chair she was standing on.

When she was finally standing in front of him, Tess's smile grew even bigger.

"GOOD MORNING!" she said, as she stood up on the tip of her toes and gave Kyle a very passionate kiss; a kiss that tasted a whole lot like orange flavoured flour to Kyle, if such a thing was possible.

"Uh morning" Kyle muttered out when the kiss was over.

"Come on have a seat!" Tess looped her arm through Kyle's as she headed him toward the kitchen table. He couldn't help noticing how his bare feet stuck to the floor like a Saturday night at a busy bar or club.

"Now here's your seat!" Tess motioned for Kyle to sit down, which he did.

He watched the love of his life pull a smoking skillet off the stove and start to slide it on to his plate, along with half raw sausages, the charred remains of what looked like hash browns and what was once probably bacon.

After sitting the plate down in front of him, she poured him a cup of coffee that was so thick it could be used as tar to pave roads and then a cup of orange juice that literally just plopped into the glass.

When Tess finally saw the disaster she had created and the look on Kyle's face she broke down into a flood of tears.

"Oh Kyle, I was trying to do something special for you! You've always been there for me, no matter what and I just wanted to do, oh hell I don't know, something special for you for a change!" Tess tried to wipe the tears that were pouring down her face "But I guess once again I'm too stupid to do anything right!"

"Hey, hey, hey now!" Kyle quickly got up from his seat; his heart went out to the now blubbering girl that stood next to him. Quickly he wrapped her up in a big hug.

"We'll have no more of that 'you're too stupid' talk anymore you hear me, missy?!" Kyle kissed the top of Tess's head after he felt her nod into his chest.

"You are in no way stupid and I won't stand for you running yourself down like that, you hear me?"

Once again Kyle felt Tess nod into his chest.

"First off, I'm touched that you went to all this trouble for me, really I am. I couldn't care less how good or bad the meal turned out. I would have eaten every last bite of it."

"...and then probably keeled over dead from food poisoning..." Tess mumbled into Kyle's chest.

"True, but I would have done so with a smile on my face, not to mention that my last words would have been how great my last meal was." Kyle smiled as he heard Tess giggle. Reaching down he turned Tess's face up to meet his.

"Tess sweetie, why don't you go and take a shower and I'll clean up in here."

"Okay" nodded Tess, who then looked around at the destruction that had once been called Kyle's kitchen.

"I'm really sorry I destroyed your kitchen."

"Oh, it's no big thing!" Kyle gave Tess an adorable lopsided grin. "Nothing a good mopping and a few new coats of paint won't fix!"

"Thank you Kyle, for everything."

Tess turned and headed towards the bathroom. She couldn't wait to get rid of the smell of oranges out of her hair. Just as she was about to leave the kitchen a sudden thought made her stop and turn to face Kyle. She vividly remembered her fantasy in the shower and she just couldn't resist.

She watched him as he started to clear the awful mess she had made and couldn't love him anymore than she did in that moment.

"Oh Kyle?"

Something in Tess' tone of voice made Kyle turn around.

"Ye..." his voice died as soon as he took in the heavenly sight before him.

Tess had one of her gorgeous shapely legs raised onto a stool and she was slowly rubbing it up and down.

"I think I might need some help cleaning off my back ... and maybe my front as well," she whispered seductively.

Kyle made an audible gulp and nodded nervously.

"Uh yeah, I think I could help you with that."

He watched as she slowly sauntered out of the room, swinging her hips just that little bit extra to hold his attention, the temperature raising in the room for Kyle and his mouth suddenly turning dry.

"Holy shit, this is really happening!" he thought to himself.

Once Kyle finally got his brain in gear he realized that he was still just standing there. He finally managed to get his feet to work and made his way towards the bathroom.

He found his jersey pooled in the middle of the hallway floor. He scooped it and held it to his nose, breathing in the scent that was all Tess. Something floral, like perfume or maybe it was just her natural smell, he wasn't sure. He held the jersey to his chest and continued on his small journey.

By the bathroom door he found her little white boy short panties, god she looked so hot in them. He picked them up and placed both items of clothing on the bathroom shelf as he entered.

"Hey Tess, do you want me to put your clothes in the wash since they seem to be covered in flour and god knows wha..." again his voice failed him.

His eyes bulged out of their sockets when he took in the heavenly vision before him. It nearly floored him, but certainly stole his breath away. He could see the silhouette of her voluptuous breasts, erect nipples and very shapely ass cheeks, through the steam covered glass and he could feel himself grow hard with the anticipation of what was to come.

"Are you just going to stand there? Or are you going to help me get clean?" asked Tess, with slight amusement to her tone.

This was enough to force Kyle out of the daze he'd been in since he had seen her beautiful body.

How the hell could he have gotten so lucky? Was it really possible that this heavenly creature could be in love with him?

Kyle had never moved so quick in his life and was stripped down in seconds. He couldn't understand why, but he was extremely nervous as he reached for the shower door. He certainly wasn't a player but had enough girlfriends to know that he never seemed to disappoint in the bedroom department, but somehow this was something more.

He loved this woman with every fibre of his being and he wanted her to feel cherished and loved.

This wasn't just about sex anymore, or self gratification, this was about her needs, her wants and him wanting to fulfil every one of them.

As he opened the steamy glass door his breath caught in his throat as he watched the shampoo foam from her hair, glide down her gorgeous porcelain back and to the cleft of her ass cheeks. God he'd never seen anything as sexy as that.

"Kyle, your letting in the cold," said Tess, with a fake pout on her lips.

He quickly stepped in behind her and closed the door behind him. He slowly skimmed his hooded eyes over her entire wet body and embedded every perfect feature into his mind.

She could feel his burning gaze as he scrutinized her body. He couldn't resist taking a taste of her glistening skin and he kissed, licked and sucked the little valley between her neck and shoulder, this elicited a deep moan from Tess as she pushed her body flush to his.

"You know Kyle, this has been a fantasy of mine for awhile now," admitted Tess, in a raspy voice.

"Really?" asked Kyle.

"Uh huh!" replied Tess, unable to form words as he continued his feast on her skin.

"Then we'll just have to see if we can make the fantasy a reality," whispered Kyle, in her ear.

Her whole body quivered in anticipation.

"Are you sure about this Tess? I thought you were going to think about it, I don't want you to have any regrets."

"I HAVE thought about it and I want this Kyle!" she stated with determination.

He gently cupped her face, tilted her head back and gently kissed her. It soon became passionate though and he skimmed her lips with his tongue, begging for entrance to that sweet mouth of hers.

Tess gladly complied with the request opening the kiss fully.

He began to kiss her more fiercely as he got to taste her wonderful mouth. He couldn't help the moan that escaped from the back of his throat. He carried on his torturous journey along her neck and eventually down to her ample breasts.

"What was your fantasy Tess?" asked Kyle.

"Oh god, I need ..."

"What? What do you need Tess?" asked Kyle. He wanted to make her fantasy real.

He gently cupped her ample breast into his hand, rolling and gently squeezing her rosy peak between his thumb and forefinger.

Tess grabbed a fist full of his hair and yanked his head down to her breast.

"Touch me, Kyle," commanded Tess.

Kyle used his tongue to titillate around the areola, making her nipple even harder before taking it into his hot, moist mouth. The moan that escaped Tess's lips was enough to drive him forward.

As he continued his ministrations, alternating between each breast, he glided his hand down her flat stomach until he reached the small triangle of blonde curly hair. He gently ran his finger over her folds before slightly parting them to expose the soft pink skin to his touch.

He ran his finger along the length of her before slowly entering his two fingers into her warm depths.

"Oh God this is soooooo much better than any fucking fantasy!" thought Tess, as Kyle's fingers worked their magic.

Tess unconsciously moved her hips in time with each thrust of Kyle's fingers. He slid his thumb across her nub and that was all it took to release her juices. A moan of pure pleasure was forced from her mouth as her body shuddered in completion.

Kyle watched her beautiful face as she finally came down from her high. She looked thoroughly ravished. Her lips were swollen with the kisses and her cheeks flushed from their recent activity.

He'd never seen such an awe inspiring sight.

He grabbed the soap and started to clean the rest of the mess off Tess. She looked at him slightly confused, wondering why he had stopped.

"Don't worry, I haven't finished with you yet," said Kyle seductively.

After he had completed his task, he scooped her still trembling body up into his strong arms, carried her out of the shower to the bedroom and placed her gently on the bed.

"But Kyle I'm still soaking wet!" shrieked Tess.

"Just the way I like my women!" said Kyle, with a goofy looking grin on his face.

Tess couldn't help the giggle that erupted from her mouth, along with a roll of her eyes.

His face suddenly became serious as he looked at her magnificent form laying out in all its glory.

"You are the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, I love you Tess," declared Kyle as he joined her in bed.

"I love you too Kyle," replied Tess, as a slight shiver ran through her body.

"Are you cold?"

"A little."

"I'll have to see what I can do about that," said Kyle, taking her engorged nipple into his mouth.

Tess's body arched off the bed, her hands fisting the bed sheet as his tongue caused small hot pulses through her body.

She couldn't believe how close he could get her by that one simple act.

Kyle's feelings for Tess took over. He started to kiss her deeply and his body felt as if it was on fire with the passion he felt for her, as his hands skimmed along her skin, wondering how the hell he'd gotten so lucky. Not really believing that this gorgeous woman wanted him as much as he did her.

Their touches were gentle and their love for each other showed in the way they worshipped each others' body. He ran a finger over her moist folds, inserted his fingers and rubbed her sensitive nub with his thumb.

He knew that Tess was close to completion but he didn't want to get her there just yet. He moved his body over hers and gently parted her legs with his knee. As he felt her walls begin to flutter against his fingers he removed them from her body and Tess whimpered in frustration at the loss of contact. He looked into her eyes and saw only love and acceptance. He inched slowly inside of her allowing her body time to adjust before thrusting deep inside of her, making her scream his name and cum instantly.

He slowly moved in and out of her warmth, allowing her to come down from her orgasm. Tess began to thrust her hips in time with Kyle and they both found a suitable rhythm that brought them both maximum pleasure.

As their orgasm built again, their bodies started moving in a heated frenzy. Screams of pleasure resonated around the room as they both reached their climax together.

Once they had finally got their breaths back, Kyle gave Tess a gentle kiss.

"I love you Kyle. I've never felt so cherished in all of my life," admitted Tess.

"I'm going to spend my days making you feel that way," promised Kyle, as he pulled out of Tess.

He pulled her flush against his body and it wasn't long before they both fell into a peaceful sleep.

Chapter 28

The sun's morning rays broke through the cracks of the blinds and inched their way across the bed until they made contact with Liz's sleeping face. This woke her up from her deep slumber causing her to groan in protest.

Sitting up slowly in the bed, Liz let out a monster yawn as she stretched her arms up over her head trying to wake up. Once the yawning and stretching was complete, she took stock of her situation and was shocked at what she found.

It was morning!

She had stayed overnight at a guy's place!

She NEVER stayed overnight at a guy's place. Well okay, there was that one time in Vegas but that one didn't count! It wasn't a guy's place! Just some penthouse suite he had rented out!

But this was Max's place!

She was also in Max's bed!

And she was in Max's bed alone!

There was just something not quite right with this whole situation.

Liz shook her head. “What am I still doing here anyway?”

She had finally got what she wanted from Max, a great fuck, so why did she stay the night with him? Why was she still sitting in his bed?

“Cut it off now!” Liz's logical mind shouted out to her. She pulled the covers to one side, exposing herself to the morning chill and making her bare nipples harden.

“You got what you wanted. Now get your clothes on, tell Max it was great and get the hell out!”

As she padded around the small bedroom, looking for her clothing, Liz listened to what her brain was telling her. She had achieved her goal in sleeping with Max so maybe the best thing to do now would be to just thank him for a great night and be done with him.

Now although she was listening to her logical mind, her heart was telling her that she should just see where this thing with Max was heading.

Sighing, Liz decided not to think anymore and just concentrate on finding her clothes.

After a few minutes of the futile task of looking for her clothes, Liz remembered that all of her clothing was scattered across Max’s living room floor. Normally this wouldn’t bother Liz and she would have no problem walking out of the bedroom completely naked but something inside told her to grab some of Max’s clothing and put them on.

She went to his closet, pulled out a blue pin striped shirt to put on, grabbed a pair of socks from one of his drawers and put them on her cold feet. As she walked past one of Max’s mirrors she nearly screamed from shock as she took in the sight of her bird nest hair. She grabbed a hairbrush off the nearby counter and did her best to get rid of all the knots and tangles. Liz sighed after looking at herself in the mirror and opened the bedroom door.

She stopped dead in her tracks at the sight before her. Max was as naked as the day he was born, except for a pair of boxers that covered the most essential bits from the splatter of fat, as he fried some bacon.

Liz leaned up against the door frame and admired the view before she made herself known. Robert Palmer’s ‘Addicted to Love’ was on the radio. Max was swaying his hips and doing a little dance as he continued to cook breakfast for both of them.

He started to sing and move each buttock cheek up and down in time with the music. It took all of Liz’s control not to laugh, it was sexy but oh so funny.

“You see the signs, but you can’t read,
You’re runnin’ at a different speed,
Your heart beats in double time
Another kiss and you’ll be mine, a one track mind,
You can’t be saved,
Oblivion is all you crave,
If there’s some left for you
You don’t mind if you do

WHOA, you like to think that you’re immune to the stuff, oh yeahhhhhhhh
It’s closer to the truth to say you can’t get enough
You know you’re gonna have to face it, you’re addicted to love!”

Max was using the spatula as a microphone. He threw it across to his other hand and spun around ready to sing the chorus. He had his eyes closed and was swaying his hips side to side as he belted out the chorus.

“Might as well face it, you’re addicted to love, whoa!
Might as well face it, you’re addicted to love
Might as well face it, you’re addicted to love
Might as well face it, you’re addicted to love
Might as well face it, you’re addicted to love”

[Instrumental break]

As the instrumental part of the song came on Max did his air guitar manoeuvres and nodded his head. He then raised the spatula back to his mouth ready for the rest of the song.

“Hmmm, good looking, great in bed, can sing, dance and cook!!! What more could a girl ask for. Why the hell hasn’t some girl snapped him up yet?” thought Liz, but then she was shocked when she realised how angry she was getting thinking of another girl getting her hands on him.

All the earlier thoughts she had had over just cutting it off with Max and getting the hell out of there was now gone. Nope, Max was hers and nobody else was going to get a look in, if she could help it.

“Your lights are on, but you’re not home
Your will is not your own
You’re heart sweats, your teeth gr... holy shit!”

He made a grab for the volume, on the Radio, as soon as he saw Liz standing by the bedroom door with a bemused smile on her face. She watched as Max’s face, right to the very tip of his ears, turned a beetroot red, when he realised she was standing there.

“Uh, how long have you been standing there?”

“Long enough to see that you could either go on American Idol or Dancing With The Stars, you Robert Palmer imitator!”

“I’ve ... I’ve made breakfast, sit down at the table. It’s ready to serve,” said Max, pointing to the table with his fake microphone.

“Are you going to eat, like that?” asked Liz, pointing to his attire and blushing.

“Why Liz, is that a blush I see on your face? It’s not like you haven’t been up close and personal with my body,” stated Max, as he sat down serving the last slice of bacon onto Liz’s plate.

Liz decided to change the subject before she felt uncomfortable, or she had to explain to Max that she didn’t normally do the morning routine thing.

“So, you can cook huh?”

“Yeah, of course I can cook. I’ve been doing it for years,” replied Max.

“So, did your mom teach you?”

Max almost choked on the forkful of scrambled egg he just placed in his mouth, as he erupted into a hardy laugh.

“What’s so funny Max?” asked Liz, getting slightly annoyed that he was laughing at her.

“Sorry, sorry,” Max coughed, trying to stop his laughter. “It’s just the idea of MY mom, of all people, trying to teach someone to cook; well it’s just too funny!”

“What?” asked Liz, confused.

“It was the cook we had growing up who taught me all my culinary skills. My mother was NOT a very good cook Liz. She used to practice new recipes and to be honest, how the hell we never ended up with food poisoning is beyond me!”

The toast that Max had been preparing before they sat down for breakfast suddenly popped up out of the toaster. Max got out of his chair and started to butter the toast.

“You know, I don’t understand why you haven’t been snapped up by some girl, you can sing, cook and after last night I know for a fact that you have a BIG...”

Max quickly turned around and shoved a piece of buttered toast in to Liz’s mouth, before she completed the sentence.

A smile graced her beautiful lips. She bit down on the toast, chewed it and then said...

“I WAS going to say ears, BIG ears.”

“Sure you were Liz,” said Max blushing.

This elicited another giggle from Liz. He loved making her smile and laugh. She looked so beautiful when her face was lit up with joy. Well, she looked beautiful no matter what she was doing according to Max.

“So, do you have any plans for today?” asked Max.

“Except from going home and changing?”

“Yeah, besides that.”

“No, I will have to phone T... my friend when I get back to the house though.”

She almost let Tess’ name slip from her mouth. ALMOST.

“Do you fancy doing something together today?” asked Max hopefully.

"Why I would love too," smiled Liz.

Chapter 29

*DING*

“I can’t believe after all the fun we’ve had today you end up bringing me here,” said Liz, as she watched Max press the button that would take the elevator to the floor his office was on.

Max turned, took one look at her beautiful pouting lips and smiled. He couldn’t help remembering the way they had spent their day; or how Liz had tricked him.

“Hey, it’s not that I didn’t have fun today at Joey’s Pool Hall, it’s just that I really need to go into the office to take care of a few things,” said Max.

“It was fun today. I nearly died of laughter when you thought the pool hall was going to be full of big sweaty biker men drinking beer and smoking.”

“I did get a shock when I walked into that building. It’s a very classy place. I love the fact that they have a dance floor on the higher level and the pool tables on the lower one.”

“Oh you wait until you go in there in the evening. It has a whole different atmosphere. It’s like going to your favourite club to dance and yet you have all the fun of playing pool in between. You have to book in advance for the evening though, it gets that busy,” said Liz.

“Well that’s another date we can go on then. I’ll look forward to going there at night.”

“I really enjoyed myself today Max, especially when I won the bet.”

“Oh I bet you did. You know you could have warned me BEFORE I accepted the bet that you used to date a pro pool player.”

Liz laughed.

“Of course I wasn’t going to tell you that Max. What girl could refuse a bet like that?”

“God, I’m dreading what you’re going to come up with.”

“The look on your face was priceless when I sunk all those balls on my first break,” laughed Liz.

“That’s because I knew I was in trouble.”

“Well you know a deal is a deal right?”

“I won’t renege on our bet Liz but just remember I’m not used to this kind of stuff,” said Max.

Liz’s eyes suddenly lit up and she moved closer to Max, placing her hand on his hard, muscular, shirt covered chest.

“You know, I don’t think I’ve ever had sex in an elevator before.”

“And you’re not going to now either,” said Max, his eyes wide as saucers.

Liz’s smile turned predatory. She slowly moved her hand across the expanse of his chest and started to undo the top buttons of his crisp white shirt.

“Oh and why not?”

Max gently grabbed her hand to halt her descent on his buttons. He rested his forehead against hers and whispered, “Because anyone could walk in here. Not to mention that there is a camera in here.”

He pointed the lens out to Liz.

“Oh poo,” Liz sighed. “I guess I’ll have to settle for this then.”

Liz stood on tiptoe, fisted the hair at the nape of his neck and brought him down for a searing kiss.

*DING*

“Whoa, did you hear bells?” asked Liz, in a daze.

“Uh Liz, I think that was the elevator signalling our arrival.”

As the doors to the lift opened, the noise of a busy office hit their ears. Phones were ringing, slight murmur of voices in the background and people bustling around the office with a purpose.

“Wow you’re a bunch of busy little beavers here aren’t you?”

“Yeah, my dad doesn’t like time to be wasted,” said Max.

“Where is the ladies room? I need to go and powder my nose,” said Liz.

“Just go through those doors over there and it’s the second door on the left.”

“Okay thanks. I’ll meet you in your office. Where is it by the way?”

“My office is just down there on the left,” said Max, pointing down the hallway.

Liz manoeuvred her way through the desks and headed out towards the toilets. Max headed towards his office, making a quick stop along the way.

“Good afternoon Carrie,” said Max.

“Max, I didn’t expect you in today. Is that Miss Parker?”

“Yes Carrie, that’s Miss Parker. I just popped into the office to pick up those Parker reports we were working on yesterday, make a few phone calls and then I’ll be leaving for the rest of the day.”

“Okay Max, I’ll just print off the reports and then I’ll bring them to you. Oh and here are your messages for today.”

“Thanks Carrie,” replied Max, as he headed towards his office.
*******
This was her chance. She never expected Max Evans to show up today. According to his secretary, he was out for the day. She couldn’t believe her luck.

She had done extensive research into Evans, Davenport & Sears. Max Evans was the son of Phillip Evans, the majority shareholder of the company. He liked to run every morning, was a workaholic, single and best of all, according to her sources, he was very naive. That made him an easy target to wrap around her finger. Yes, Max was the perfect candidate for her to sleep her way to the top. What better way than the boss’s son?

He was the youngest lawyer to land the infamous Parker account and many personal details had been printed about him in the press. That’s one of the reasons she chose her internship here.

She unbuttoned the two top buttons of her blouse, exposing her ample breasts. She stood in the open doorway of his office; one hand on the door frame, the other placed seductively on her hip.

Max was so engrossed in reading his messages that he didn’t notice the woman blocking his path to his office. If she hadn’t of spoken to him first he would have ran into her.

“Hi Max, my name is Pamela and I’m your new intern,” she said, flicking her long blonde hair behind her shoulder, making sure Max got an eyeful of her breasts.

Max’s head shot up from the messages he was looking at and was left speechless. First of all she had called him Max. Secondly, her breasts were practically jumping out of her blouse and didn’t leave much to the imagination. Thirdly, he didn’t even know where this woman had come from.

“I just wanted to let you know that I’m ready, willing and perfectly able to give you ANY help you need,” said Pamela, shoving her breasts further into his face.
*******
Liz had just come back from the ladies room, walked around the corner towards Max’s office when she noticed the blonde bimbo standing seductively in his doorway, heard her offer her SERVICES to Max and practically shoved her breasts in his face.

To Liz’s surprise, she instantly felt jealous that this little harpy was trying to get HER Max. A streak of possessiveness ran through her body.

“Oh there is no WAY you are getting your claws into him bitch.”
********
Now Max, being Max missed the undercurrent tone to her voice.

“Well that’s very kind of you; Pamela was it?”

“Yes, that’s right. But you can just call me Pam if you like." She said in what she thought was a flirty tone.

“It’s so great to have people on board who are conscientious and hard working.”

Liz rolled her eyes and almost laughed out loud at Max’s response, he could be so dense sometimes for such an intelligent man. No, not dense, a little naive maybe?

Liz stepped out from her hiding place and calmly walked up to Max.

“Wow, just for a second, I thought I’d walked into the offices of Maxim,” said Liz, sending death glares to the tart that was still obstructing Max’s office.

“What? Where?” asked Max, confused.

“Are you referring to me?” asked Pamela, aware of what this little brunette girl was hinting at.

“Yep, I’m referring to you." Liz rolled her eyes and pointed at the other woman's obvious fake breasts. "It's a wonder you can even stand up straight with those two tons of plastic waste you have sitting there on your chest!"

“I was just...”

“I know exactly what you were doing,” said Liz, narrowing her eyes. “And if you know what’s good for you, I suggest you use your brain to get ahead in this company. Now go and make me a coffee.”

“EXCUSE ME?”

“Wow, deaf as well as dumb. You just pour the contents of the pot into a mug and add sugar. It’s not rocket science. I’m sure someone with your IQ can handle it,” smirked Liz. "Oh and try not to stand too close to the heating pad on the coffee maker. We wouldn’t want all that plastic in your chest to melt now would we?”

“For your information, I. DON’T. WORK. FOR. YOU.” said Pamela, poking Liz in the shoulder expressing each word.

“Erm... I suggest you don’t do that Pamela,” said Max, as he watched Liz’s face grow murderous with each poke of the intern’s finger.

“No? So who do you work for then?” asked Liz, ignoring Max’s attempt to calm the situation.

“I work for Max,” said Pamela, as she placed a hand on his chest. “Isn’t that right Max?”

There was no way this little mousy thing was any match for her.

Max quickly removed the hand that was on his chest as if it had burned him.

“First of all, I’m Mr Evans to you Pamela. Secondly, don’t ever touch me like that again. Thirdly, I work for her. If she tells you to get her a coffee then you damn well do it!”

Totally ignoring Max’s outburst she turned around to face the small brunette, totally pissed that this snip of a girl had already gotten her in trouble with the boss’ son.

"Just who the hell do you think you are bitch?"

“Uh Pamela, that’s Liz Parker. You know the daughter to Jeff Parker our firm’s largest client.”

Pamela turned white, muttered something under her breath, started to redo her buttons and walked off in the opposite direction.

It had taken all of Liz’s restraint not to scratch the harpy’s eyeballs out when she DARED place her hand on his chest.

“The nerve of that little bitch! Can you believe it? How dare she touch what’s mine.”

“What?” asked Max, looking at Liz like she’d grown two heads. He couldn’t believe what had just come out of her mouth.

“I said, how dare she touch what’s mine!”

Liz grabbed hold of the front of Max’s shirt and propelled him into the office. She immediately slammed the door shut with her foot and proceeded to pull Max’s shirt from his trousers. Luckily the office windows had blinds on them, which were currently closed.

“Liz, we can’t do this here. It’s a worse spot than the elevator!”

“Mine!” was all Liz growled out before she grabbed his head and pulled him down for a searing kiss.

At first Max was shocked by her outburst, but he couldn’t help the rush he felt as she claimed her stake in him. She continued to kiss him fiercely, exploring every part of his mouth with her tongue.

Something primal had snapped inside of Liz and she was not going to take no for an answer this time. She manoeuvred Max so he was standing behind his massive mahogany desk.

Max gently untangled himself from Liz. She was causing him to lose his grip on reality. All he wanted to do was sweep everything off his desk and take her there but he knew that anyone could walk in on them.

“Liz, we can’t do this here,” he stated, in a determined voice.

Liz ignored Max and started to undress herself. She seductively removed her blouse, pulled the zip on her skirt and wiggled her hips out of the tight garment, allowing it to pool on the floor at her feet. She stepped out of her skirt, unclipped her bra, threw it across the room and stalked towards Max.

Max’s eyes were popping out of his head. Liz was wearing very sexy, skin coloured, lingerie. Her lacy bra, which was now hanging off his desk lamp, little boy short panties which showed her ass cheeks off to perfection, oh so gorgeous lacy hold ups and the icing on the cake? Black high heeled shoes.

A deep, almost primal, growl left Max’s lips as he drank in the sight of his gorgeous girlfriend.

Liz made quick work of removing his trousers and boxer shorts. She was about to remove his shirt when both of them heard Max’s fathers voice outside the office door.

“Did I hear you right Carrie? You said Max was in his office.”

They could hear her muffled reply.

“SHIT Liz he’s coming here! Get your clothes back on!” whispered a frantic Max.

The door handle started to move.

“No time,” said Liz, giggling.

They both turned their heads towards the door, frozen in fear.

As the door started to open, they heard Carrie’s voice.

“Oh Mr Evans, here are those reports that you wanted from Max.”

The door stopped moving.

This snapped both Max and Liz out of their shocked state. Max grabbed hold of Liz and started to push her behind the water cooler in his office, his pants around his ankles making the movement clumsy.

“What? Max you’ve got to be kidding me? I may be small but I’m not THAT small,” whispered Liz.

Max then pulled her towards some filing cabinets.

“Erm, Max there’s no space behind them. What do you want me to do? Get into one of the drawers?”

“Liz this is no laughing matter. If my father finds you in this state of undress we are in big trouble!”

“You’re a grown man Max. What could you father possibly do?” whispered Liz.

“Erm, tell your father!”

This made Liz visibly pale.

The door started opening again.

“Quick, under the desk!” said Max, shoving her in the small opening.

Just as the door opened fully, Max managed to sit down in his chair, scooting his legs under the desk as far as Liz’s body would allow, hiding the fact that his trousers and boxer shorts were still around his ankles.

Max was just about to rejoice about avoiding a rather embarrassing moment when he noticed Liz’s bra hanging from his desk lamp.

“Max,” said Phillip, as he turned to enter his office.

Max quickly grabbed Liz’s bra and shoved it under the desk. He prayed to God that his father wouldn’t want him to move or he would be caught red handed.

“Max, I didn’t think you were coming in today,” said his father, as he walked into the office.

“I just had a few things to do here and then I’m heading back out again.”

“Are you alright Max?” asked Phillip.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Why?”

“Well you just seem a little flushed,” said Phillip.

This made Max blush from the tips of his ears down to his neck.

Liz had to place her hand over her mouth to stifle a giggle that was about to erupt.

As Max and Phillip carried on their conversation Liz noticed that Max’s cock was still hard and standing proud, right in front of her. An evil smile spread across her face. Oh yes, this was going to be fun.

She wrapped her small hand around his throbbing cock and started a steady rhythm.

Max jumped, his knees hitting the underneath of the desk, as he felt her warm hand wrap around him. He couldn’t believe that she was doing this while his father was standing in front of him. He tried moving his legs to push her away but his damn pants were restricting his movements.

He tried to place, what he hoped would be, a stoic face. He couldn’t allow his father to find out about his and Liz’s relationship, well at least not at this moment in time.

“I’ve brought those documents that need to be signed by the end of the week,” said Phillip.

“That’s great. Just leave them on my desk and I’ll make sure I get them signed.”

“Okay, we need to get ahead on this case Max,” said Phillip.

Just as Phillip said ‘ahead’ on this case, Liz just happened to take Max fully into her mouth.

“Yes,” squeaked Max, as he felt Liz’s warm, moist mouth encase him fully.

“You know Max, you look a little stressed out. You need to do something to relax a bit, find some release,” said Phillip.

Ohhhhhh,” sighed Max. Liz had just sucked Max deeper into her mouth and was swirling her tongue around the tip of his manhood.

“Don’t worry dad, I’m going to be releasing here very soon. Uh I mean sure thing dad.”

Liz was trying hard not to make a noise as she continued to pleasure Max under the desk. Although the danger of doing this was thrilling, she did not want her father finding out.

As Liz continued her steady rhythm she could tell Max was close to completion.

Max made the mistake of taking a quick glance under his desk. He could see and feel Liz’s soft brown hair flowing across his thighs, her head bobbing up and down. It was so incredibly sexy that Max had to fight a deep groan that was working its way up his throat.

“Max, are you okay?” asked Phillip. His son didn’t seem to have his mind fully on the job and that was highly unusual for Max.

“Uh, yeah dad, I’m ...”

Liz began to speed up the pace and cupped his sac.

“...FINE!” squeaked Max.

Phillip looked at his son strangely. He wasn’t quite sure what was going on with Max. Maybe he’d been working the boy too hard. He knew the Parker account could be difficult but he thought Max was handling it well. Maybe something else was bothering him.

“Max, you know you can tell me anything right?”

“Sure dad.”

“So if anything was up, you’d tell me right?”

UP!” shouted Max as Liz deep throated him.

“Uh, I mean there’s nothing up here dad.”

Phillip shook his head in wonder. He really needed to let Max have a break soon.

“So Max, how are things going on the Parker account?”

“Oh things are definitely looking up,” replied Max.

Phillip turned and started walking towards the door.

“Good, that’s good. Just remember Max, keep the Parker’s happy no matter what.”

Liz gave Max a slight squeeze of his sac as she sucked down for the final time.

“GOD YESSSSSSS!” shouted Max, as he spilled his seed inside Liz.

Phillip turned to look at his son who had a strange faraway look on his face. Phillip made a mental note to give him a vacation soon before walking out of the door and closing it quietly behind him.

As Liz heard the door close, she pushed Max’s chair back a bit so she could get out of the cramped space. She headed towards the door and locked it.

“I should have done that earlier. We wouldn’t have been disturbed,” said Liz.

The sight of Liz’s sexy ass, swaying as she walked towards the door, had Max instantly hard again. It was only then that he realized his pants were still around his ankles. He was about to pull them up again when he felt Liz’s hands stopping his movement.

“Oh no you don’t mister!”

“Liz, we almost got caught!”

“But we didn’t Max. Besides, your father said that you had to do anything to make us happy.”

“I’m sure he wasn’t talking about this LIZ!”

Liz turned around so her back was facing Max. She slowly removed the little boy short panties down her legs, standing up to step out of them. If that didn’t get Max to abandon his reserve nothing would.

Watching Liz remove her panties was enough to make Max snap. He swiped his hand across the desk, sending the contents sprawling across the floor. He spun her around, lifted her onto the desk and started to kiss her passionately.

As Max’s tongue darted into her mouth, Liz opened fully to his invasion. This is what she had been working towards, to finally get Max just to let go.

Chapter 30

He couldn’t help looking at the beautiful sight before him. As the sun shone through the opening in the curtains it fell directly on her angelic face. She looked stunning lying there in her sleep. No frown marred her beautiful features. Her blonde curly hair was splayed across the pillow; she looked at peace, even though he knew the turbulent thoughts that would plague her when she woke up.

He couldn’t believe how such a caring, loving woman could have matured that way when she had a father who thought that a diamond necklace or a good meal at the restaurant made up for years of neglect. It made him angry just thinking about it.

As Tess started to stir from her sleep, Kyle’s thought turned to his family dinner not so long ago. He would love to take Tess to one of those dinners but he was nervous about what someone like Tess would think about meeting his dysfunctional family.

'She might run away screaming after five seconds and never talk to me again!'

“What are you thinking about?”

Kyle jumped slightly, being pulled out of his deep thoughts by the silky tone of her voice.

“What?”

Tess giggled.

“I said, what are you thinking about? I know you were watching me sleep but you had this far away look,” explained Tess.

“I was just thinking about...”

Kyle stopped mid-sentence. He didn’t want to upset Tess by telling her what dinner was like around his mother’s and father’s house.

“Kyle, please tell me.”

“I was just thinking about the dinners I have with my folks. Michael and Maria always arrive arguing, as per usual. Then my mom decides that my love life is the center of conversation at the table. She’s always trying to throw hints about how I need to date more. If she thinks I've gone too long without either she starts fixing me up with her friends’ daughters. You don’t even want to know how some of those turned out,” said Kyle with a grimace.

“Oh it sounds wonderful Kyle. You all sit around the table and talk like that?”

“Oh yeah, but then my Dad likes to tell embarrassing stories about when I was younger, to my step sister and her husband but the best bit is when my mom, Amy, tells us stories about my sister Maria!”

“Wow. I would much rather be embarrassed than be totally ignored Kyle. My dinner always consists of classical music, servants placing obscure plates in front of me, my Dad sitting on one end of the incredibly long dining table and me on the other. He’s always on his cell phone, talking business. I’m lucky if I even finish a full meal in my house before he has to leave. I have to shout just to be heard because I’m sitting so far away from him.”

“Your dad doesn’t know what he’s missing out on Tess.”

“Yeah well, he made his feelings perfectly clear last night. I’m done with it Kyle. I’m sick of fighting for his attention. I can’t compete any more, nor do I want to. If he can’t give me the time of day then he’s not worth my attention. I wish I could meet your family. They sound great!”

“Well why don’t you?”

“What?”

Tess’ eyes shot open, she sat up in bed and looked at Kyle who looked just as shocked as she did.

“Really, you want me to meet your family?”

After a half a second, the shocked look was off Kyle's face and he was nodding.

“Yeah. You should come to dinner with me tonight. I have to warn you what you’re getting into though before you accept my invitation. I’ll introduce you to Maria, my sister and her husband Michael. Their relationship is kind of intense. They constantly argue but then gross you out by making up with each other in a rather public display of affection! Then you have my mom, Amy. She will grill you worse than a police detective looking for a crook. She’ll ask you all kind of questions. My dad, well he’s pretty laid back. They will adore you Tess, I just know it.”

“Oh my god, it sounds like such good fun! I’m so ready for this!” squealed an excited Tess.

Later that evening...

"I’m SO NOT ready for this!”

Tess was pacing her room like a caged animal. She threaded her fingers through her hair and tugged on it, hard.

“What the hell was I thinking?!”

She stuck her head back into the wardrobe looking for something to wear. The fact that half of its contents were currently spread across her floor went un-noticed by Tess.

“Okay this little dress looks good, no that’s too short. What about this skirt? No too slutty. Oh my god I can’t believe I still own this,” she said in horror, as she pulled out an all in one leather outfit.

“That would definitely give Amy a heart attack,” she said to herself as she threw the offending garment over her shoulder.

“I’ve got NOTHING to wear!” cried Tess.

As Tess sat on her bed, with her face in her hands, she heard a knock on the door.

“Come in!” shouted Tess, as she pulled her bath robe tighter around her body.

“Are you alright Miss?” asked Charles.

Tears started to form in Tess’ eyes.

“Oh Charles, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I swear I’ve looked through my whole wardrobe and I’ve got nothing to wear!”

“If you will excuse me Miss, but may I make a suggestion?” asked Charles.

Tess looked at him curiously.

“Of course Charles.”

“Perhaps you are looking for something like this,” said Charles, as he pulled a conservative egg shell blue dress from behind his back along with a little bolero jacket to match.

“Oh Charles, that’s perfect!” screeched Tess, as she took the dress that Charles was holding out for her. “But where did you get it?”

“It was your mother’s Miss.”

“My Mom’s, but I thought that my father got rid of all her stuff years ago.”

“Well actually, he asked me to get rid of all her things. I asked one of the maids that used to serve your mother which clothes I should save. She chose, what she called, the timeless classics so that you could wear them when you got older. We’ve saved most of your mother’s things up in the attic. The dresses, of course, were looked after and stored by the maid. We thought now was the right time to tell you.”

Tess couldn’t believe the kindness of this man. Here he’d been for the past thirty odd years serving her father and yet he always looked out for her.

“There aren’t enough words that could describe what I’m feeling right now. I can’t thank you enough Charles!” said Tess as she engulfed the old man in a tight hug. “Thank that maid for taking such good care of my mom’s things as well, would you?”

“Certainly Miss. I’ll just take my leave now so that you can get dressed. You’re going to be late if you don’t get a move on.”

Tess was so excited at the prospect of wearing her Mother’s dress. This was the first time she’d ever had anything belonging to her mother. It was lucky that she had decided to do her hair and makeup before getting dressed otherwise it would have taken her another hour to get ready.

She slipped the blue dress over her head, praying that it would fit her and it did, like a glove. She stood in front of the long length mirror and slowly spun around so she could check out the dress. Although it was simple in design it was beautiful. Tess put on the little bolero jacket which made the outfit complete. She couldn’t believe that she fit into her Mom’s things. This was going to be one special night for Tess, for many reasons.

As Tess had just finished strapping on her high heeled sandals, a knock came on the door.

“Who is it?”

Tess had to be careful her father didn’t see her in the dress.

“It’s me Miss. I’m just letting you know that the car has been brought around the front for...”

The words died in Charles’s throat as he took in the sight before him.

“You look just like her,” he whispered.

“Really?”

“She was a beautiful woman Tess, very kind hearted. I think she would have been so proud of you, so proud of the young woman you’ve become.”

Tess launched herself at Charles and gave him the biggest hug her small body could muster.

“You know something Charles ... I wish you’d been my father,” Tess whispered into his ear before running off down the stairs.

Charles was left with a look of shock on his face but a definite lump in his throat. When he saw that Mr Harding was withdrawing from his own daughter, he’d vowed that he would be there for her, and he always had. That was the only reason that stopped him retiring years ago, out of loyalty to her mother’s memory and to Tess.

“I just hope he realizes it before it’s too late,” whispered Charles, into the empty room. He quietly closed the door and headed downstairs to continue his duties.
*******
Tess had stopped outside the bookstore and picked up Kyle before making her way to the Valenti household. Kyle had commented on how beautiful she looked in her dress and how it brought out the crystal blue colour of her eyes. This made her stomach flutter but now it was doing it for another reason. She was so nervous about meeting Kyle’s family, not because she thought it was too soon, but because she was afraid of what they would think of her. She knew Kyle’s family was very important to him and therefore wanted to make a good impression.

Tess hadn’t noticed that she was gripping the steering wheel so tight that her knuckles were turning white.

“Tess, they aren’t going to shoot you, you know. Don’t worry about tonight, just be yourself and I’m sure they will adore you as much as I do.”

“What?”

“Tess honey, if you grab that steering wheel any tighter I think you might just break it in half,” he said in explanation, as he gently pried her fingers away.

“Sorry, I’m just so nervous Kyle.”

“Just be yourself Tess.”

“Okay, I can do this.”

Kyle got out, ran around to open the door for Tess and then assisted her out of the car. He took her hand in his and walked her to the front door. He pulled his keys out of his pocket and started to open the front door. Tess took a deep breath in the hopes of calming her nerves. She held her breath until Kyle had fully opened the door. They stepped into the house and right into the middle of a ... war?

At least that's what it sounded like to Tess.

There was loud screaming, noise that sounded like someone banging on a metal pot, a whole bunch of yelling kids running around from one room to the other and one kid jumping up and down on the sofa that was in the living room.

"Oh cool, Sean and Kim are here! And they brought the kids!" Kyle smiled to Tess, before turning to shout over the noise.

"WHAT'S UP RUG RATS?!"

Tess watched as all four kids stopped in mid run, mid screaming and mid jumping on the sofa to turn their way.

“Uncle Kyle!” they all shouted before running towards Kyle as quick as their little legs would carry them.

Tess watched in amusement as all the kids scrambled around Kyle and how he took turns to pick each one up and talk to them.

“Hey baby girl. How are you?” asked Kyle, as he picked up the youngest girl and peppered her face with kisses.

All of a sudden Tess found herself completely surround by the other three children, all pulling on the hem of her dress trying to get her attention and asking questions at the same time.

“What’s your name?”

"Uh well my name is..."

That was all Tess got out before another question was fired at her.

“Are you Uncle Kyle’s new girlfriend?”

"Well..."

“How old are you?”

"Well I'm..."

“Where do you live?”

"Do you have any kids?"

"Who cares if she has any kids you moron! Do you have any puppies?!"

“Girls, GIRLS, leave the poor lady alone!” shouted a brown haired woman, as she came out of the kitchen smiling and wiping her hands on a rag. The woman turned to glare at a man who had just entered the room after coming out of the hallway from a side room.

"I thought you said YOU were watching the kids?!"

The man held his hands up as if to defend himself from attack.

"I only left them alone for two seconds while I went to the bathroom!"

Turning back to look at Tess the woman quickly turned her glare into a smile.

“I’m sorry, they get so excited when they meet someone new.”

“Oh that’s okay. They’re beautiful,” said Tess, bending down to shake their hands.

“My name is Tess, what’s yours.”

“I’m Rebecca,” said the eldest girl. “This is Lucy, Claire and the one in Uncle Kyle’s arms is Ruby.”

Tess took turn to shake each girl’s hand.

“Tess, this is Sean my cousin and his wife Kim.”

Kim shook Tess’s hand and then turned quickly, as only a well practiced parent can, to grab one of her daughters who decided it would be fun to grab the nearby lamp off the end table and use it as a pretty play thing.

Just as Tess took Sean’s hand the kitchen door was flung open again by a pretty tall, thin, dark haired woman.

“Hi Mom,” smiled Kyle who then turned to look at Tess.

"Mom, this is Tess."

Amy’s eyes immediately sought out the blonde woman that was standing so close to Kyle.

Tess found she could only gulp in fear at her first sight of Amy Valenti!

Chapter 31

Amy looked over the blonde voluptuous girl standing beside her son. She could tell that she was nervous but she looked so sweet Amy couldn’t help her reaction.

She immediately pulled Tess away from Kyle and engulfed her in a warm hug.

“So you’re the girl that my Kyle won’t quit talking about!”

“MOM!” shouted Kyle, totally embarrassed at his mother’s outburst.

“What, it’s true,” she said, looking over Tess’ shoulders at her son.

Tess’ face was lit up by a huge smile as Amy released her from the hug.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you Mrs. Valenti.”

“Tess, you can call me Amy. Dinner is almost ready. We’re just waiting for Maria and Michael to arrive and then we can sit down to eat. JIM OUR GUESTS HAVE ARRIVED!”

“There’s no need to shout dear. I'm right behind you,” said Jim, as he came into the room.

“Hi Dad, this is Tess. Tess this is my Dad, Jim.”

Tess looked up at Jim Valenti. Kyle had told her once that his dad had served eight years in the military as a Marine. After that he had taken the job as a cop working the streets. The man's tanned, lined face just screamed 'I'm A Tough Guy'.

Tess could see his scrutinizing gaze, giving her the once over, as if trying to find out if she was hiding something. Wanting to create a good first impression Tess placed a big smile on her face and held out her hand.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you sir.”

In that split second Tess watched as a smile broke across Jim’s face and his intimidating demeanour changed to one of the friendliest she had ever seen.

“Please call me Jim, Tess.” Jim chuckled as he took her pro offered hand and shook it.

“Okay.”

Just as Jim was about to offer Tess a drink, Amy pulled her towards the kitchen.

“Come on Tess let’s go to the kitchen while the men watch the game.”

Tess quickly shot a look of pure fear towards Kyle and he couldn't help the little snigger that escaped as she was being dragged away toward the kitchen door.

Kyle still had to call a cleaning company for the smoke damage she had already created in his kitchen and he was still finding spilt flour in the strangest of places. But once his Mom got something into her head, Kyle knew there was no way he could change it. He had a feeling that she wanted to bond with Tess so he just looked at her apologetically and shrugged his shoulders.

Tess couldn’t help the feeling of a lamb going to the slaughter house when she entered the kitchen.

“Now Tess, why don’t you make the gravy for the dinner while I finish off the pudding?” asked Amy, as she pointed to the empty meat dish on top of the cooker.

“You want me to make it from scratch?” asked Tess, her eyes widening in horror.

“Of course dear, we don’t eat any of that granulated rubbish in our house!” said Amy, beaming with pride.

Tess didn't even know what granulated meant and she seriously doubted she could make gravy.

“Um, Mrs Val... I mean Amy; I’m not really good at any form of cooking.”

“Nonsense, I’m sure you can do it when you put your mind to it. Just add some boiling water, a little flour to thicken it up, stir it continually, keep it on the heat until it reduces and it’s done.”

Tess felt like crying. How could she possibly explain to Amy her situation? She’d had a discussion earlier on, in the car, about what to tell Kyle’s parents about her lifestyle. They both decided it would be wise not to mention it on their first meeting. Kyle thought it might make his family uncomfortable considering she’s used to the finer things in life and for Tess it would make her feel uncomfortable because of the questions it would raise.

Amy watched Tess as a montage of emotions ran across her face and she realized that she was making her feel uncomfortable, which was the last thing she wanted.

“Your mom never taught you to cook?” asked Amy, genuinely concerned for the poor girl that stood before her.

“My mom died during my birth.”

“Oh my, I’m so sorry Tess. Kyle never mentioned that. If I’d have known I would never have brought it up!”

“It’s fine Amy. I know Kyle values my privacy. I just didn’t want to give you all food poisoning.”

This relaxed Amy and she lightly hugged Tess around the shoulder.

“I tell you what, why don’t you start with something simple like just stirring what’s in that pan over there,” said Amy, pointing to the pan on the back ring of the cooker.

“Now that I think I can manage,” replied Tess, smiling.

“So Tess, what is it you do for a living?” asked Amy.

"I don't think pro-shopper and club hopper is what she has in mind," thought Tess.

Just as Tess was about to reply a bubbly blonde haired girl came bouncing into the kitchen.

“Need any help in here?”

“Maria, I didn’t hear you come in,” said Amy, engulfing her daughter in a hug.

“Well with all the kids screaming out there it’s no wonder. Now who is this?” asked Maria.

For some reason Maria couldn’t shake the notion that she’d met this girl before but she couldn’t quite place where.

“Maria, this is Tess. You know the girl Kyle’s been going on about.”

“Oh, no wonder he won’t stop talking about you,” said Maria, taking Tess’ pro-offered hand and shaking it. “It’s good to finally meet you Tess.”

“You too Maria.”

“So what were we discussing here?” asked Maria, already helping her mom with the dinner.

“I was just asking Tess what she did for a living,” replied Amy.

Both women turned to Tess with expectant looks on their faces.

“Well, I er, well I mean, I’m kinda unemployed at the moment.”

“Yeah,” nodded Maria. “The economy is really bad right now. It’s so hard to find a job.”

Tess just nodded but turned her face away from Maria to hide her blush. She didn’t want to lie to these people but she also didn’t want them to feel uncomfortable in her presence.

“Well, I’ve just got to finish off the gravy and then we can sit down to eat. Maria, why don’t you and Tess start taking the food to the table and I’ll follow once the gravy is ready?”

“Sure mom.”

As Maria picked up the bowl with the carrots in it, Tess grabbed the bowl full of mashed potato and started making her way towards the massive dining room. Tess was quite surprised at Maria linking her spare arm around hers.

“I can see now why my wayward brother has fallen for you,” whispered Maria.

The look of shock that covered Tess’ face made Maria smile.

“What? Surely you know that you’re a little blonde bombshell?”

“Well I ..., you really think so?” asked Tess.

“Honey, what’s there not to like? You look stunning in that blue dress.”

Tess just smiled.

“Thanks Maria.”

“One word of warning though, our family dinners can be quite,” Maria raised her finger to her mouth trying to think of the right word to use “overwhelming, when you’re new to it.”

“Surely it can’t be that bad,” thought Tess. “I’m sure it will be fine.”

After a few trips back to the kitchen most of the food was placed on the table and everyone had joined them in the dining room. Tess helped Lucy and Claire up into their chairs while Kim placed Ruby in her booster seat.

Not long after everyone was seated at the table Amy brought in the big roasting joint of beef ready for Jim to carve. Once the meat was dished out the dinner truly began.

It was the damndest thing Tess had ever seen! One second everything was quiet and suddenly it was like someone rang a bell at a boxing match as plates of food starting being passed around at light speed and everyone was yelling over the other!

“Hey Kyle, did you see that game last night?” asked Michael.

“Oh yeah, that was great! Win with a last second shot!" replied Kyle.

“Hey Maria sweetie, pass me the carrots," said Kim.

“Did anyone hear about the Coopers?” asked Amy.

“No, what happened?” said Maria.

"Well, Mr. Cooper came home early from work, due to not feeling well, and caught his wife in their bed with her tennis instructor!" replied Amy.

"I bet that gives a whole new meaning to the phrase she's got Tennis Elbow," laughed Michael doing a gesture with his hand.

"Michael! Don't use such a rude hand gesture like that in front of the kids!" admonished Kim.

"Sorry! I forgot the squirts were here!"

"Hey Sean, pass me more of those potatoes over here would you?!" asked Jim.

"Sure thing Uncle Jim!"

"Now Jim you know what the doctor said about watching your cholesterol level!" admonished Amy.

"Oh come on. I don't think having one extra spoon full is going to...”

Jim was cut off mid sentence by Amy’s icy glare.

“Yes dear,” sighed Jim, as he placed the mashed potatoes back on the table.

“Mommy, I’m out of milk!” shouted Claire.

“Sean, be a dear and get Claire some more milk would you?” asked Kim.

"Sean get this, Sean pass me that. It's a wonder I ever get to eat anything around here!"

"Yes, we can tell you're just wasting away Mr Skin and bones!" joked Amy.

Tess was shooting her head around at each question, trying to watch everyone as they talked loud back and forth. She was amazed at how they all seemed to be shouting over each other and carrying on two or three conversations at one time!

“Uh Tess, is something wrong with your meat?” asked Amy when she realized that Tess hadn’t even touched anything on her plate yet.

“What?” asked Tess with eyes as wide as saucers. “Oh no, everything is great.” She looked around the table rather sheepishly noticing all eyes were on her.

“I’m just trying to keep up with all the conversations going on,” explained Tess, with a smile on her face.

“I already warned Tess that our dinners could be overwhelming sometimes,” laughed Maria. “I think she’s just realizing what I meant.”

Maria winked at Tess and the table erupted into laughter.

********

Later that evening....

After an amazing dinner and conversation everyone started to leave when it got late in the evening. Tess and Kyle were the last to leave since Tess had insisted on helping Amy with the washing up.

Now Kyle was holding her hand as they walked up to his bookstore.

“I’m sorry if my family were a little mad for you,” said Kyle.

"Are you crazy, I LOVED them," laughed Tess.

"You did?"

"Yeah. Maria and Michael throwing rolls at each other, your mom telling me embarrassing stories of you when you were a kid. And your dad..."

"What about him?"

"He actually sat there and listened to me while I talked to him."

"Why wouldn't he?" Kyle asked. "He likes you."

"It's just not something I'm used to that’s all."

“I’m really glad you had a great time tonight Tess. I told you my family would love you.”

“Yeah, you did,” said Tess as she leaned into Kyle to give him a passionate kiss.

When they both finally came up for air, Kyle turned around and unlocked the door to the bookstore.

“So, do you want to stay tonight? Or do you have to get home?” asked Kyle.

“I’d love to stay tonight Kyle. I don’t want it to end.”

“Me either,” said Kyle, as he stole another breathtaking kiss from Tess. They stumbled their way into the bookstore and were so caught up in the moment that they failed to realize that someone was already there, waiting. A loud clearing of the throat startled the passionate pair apart.

“What the fu..!” shouted Kyle, as he fumbled with the light switch.

As soon as the light came on Tess noticed that it was the strange blonde punk girl that had been giving her the evil eye from day one.

“Lonnie, what are you doing here? It’s way after closing,” asked Kyle, with a confused look on his face.

Lonnie gave Tess a glare that could freeze hell over and then turned to Kyle.

“I need to talk to you, privately, now!” said Lonnie.

“Whatever you have to say Lonnie, you can say in front of Tess,” said Kyle.

“Fine then,” said Lonnie, raising the magazine she was currently holding in her hand.

Kyle noticed it was one of those trashy gossip magazines. They weren’t his cup of tea, of course, but he sold a lot of them to the younger generation, interested in knowing what was currently in fashion.

“This has to do with her anyway. I was stocking the shelves after you left, like you asked me to. I was on the last stack of the new magazines when I happened to drop one of them. I picked it up and look what page it fell open on.”

"Yeah, and?" Kyle motioned with his hand wanting to get to the bottom of whatever the hell this drama was.

“Well on that page was a picture of her over there.” Lonnie motioned towards Tess. “Gracing the world with her presence at some new club and guess who is also in the picture with her?”

Chapter 32

“Lonnie, what the hell does it matter who she’s pictured with?” asked Kyle.

“Look Kyle, I noticed that Tess took an unhealthy interest in my brother Max..."

Brother Max? That bit of information shocked Tess to her core. The private investigator Liz had hired to look into Max’s background had only spoken of one sister, some married rich socialite named Isabel Whitman. He had even shown them a picture of her and it was nothing like this girl standing before her. As she looked more closely though, taking away the wild hair cut and all the piercings Tess could see much of the same features on Lonnie.

Holy shit twins! The PI never mentioned that!

"...I watched her follow him around the bookstore. At first I thought she was interested in Max and was using you to get closer to him but she did the weirdest thing. She bought the exact same books as he did, we’re talking Steinbeck here. I’m sure that kind of book is beyond her scope of reading material Kyle. I kept getting this feeling that something was off but I could never quite put my finger on it. Then I saw this picture,” said Lonnie handing the magazine over to Kyle.

“See the brunette there,” asked Lonnie, pointing to the girl standing next to Tess in the picture.

“Yeah, what about her?”

“That’s Liz Parker.”

“Liz, Liz Parker, as in Max’s Liz?”

“BINGO, give the man a star! She’s been using you to get info on Max for her little party buddy Liz.”

Kyle studied the picture a little longer than necessary. He didn’t want to believe it. He slowly turned towards Tess and looked up.

“Is this true?” asked Kyle.

Tess had the decency to blush a bright red color before lowering her eyes to the floor.

“Look Kyle, it’s true, Liz sent me into the bookstore because she found out Max spent a lot of his time here but...”

Kyle held his hand up to stop her from going on.

Neither of them noticed the telephone ringing in the background or the look of satisfaction on Lonnie’s face. Kyle was the only one who’d ever given her a chance and she was going to protect him from getting hurt. Better he knew now what she was up to before he fell to hard. The only problem was, which Lonnie didn’t realize, he already had.

“So it’s true?”

“Yes, but let me explain...”

Kyle just turned away from Tess and started towards the back.

"Kyle!"

It was breaking his heart to hear the devastation in her voice but what was he supposed to believe now? All this time she had been lying to him. He knew if he turned around he would crumble.

"KYLE!"

Tess followed Kyle.

Lonnie went behind the counter and answered the phone.

"KYLE JAMES VALENTI STOP RIGHT NOW! LET ME EXPLAIN, PLEASE!"

Kyle spun around to face her.

“WHAT! What’s left to explain Tess! YOU USED me as a way to get to Max!” he shouted.

“I will admit that the reason I first entered the bookstore was to find out information on Max but then I met you Kyle. I didn’t even know he was your friend until you introduced me to him.”

“Well that just worked out perfectly for you, didn’t it?” he spat with venom.

“For crying out loud, I didn’t know he was your friend! I met you and you, well you...”

“I WHAT!”

“You stole my heart,” whispered Tess. “How can you think that I used you after what we shared the other night? I’m in love with you Kyle.”

“I don’t really know what the hell to think right now Tess!”

Kyle was about to walk out to the back room when Lonnie grabbed his arm.

“WHAT!” he shouted.

“It’s Morty,” said Lonnie, her voice tinged with sadness.

“What about Morty?” asked Kyle, in fear.

“He’s in the hospital Kyle. He had a heart attack tonight.”

“Shit! SHIT!”

Tess placed a tentative hand on his shoulder.

“Come on Kyle, I’ll take you to the hospital,” offered Tess.

“I don’t think he needs your help,” spat Lonnie.

“LONNIE!” shouted Kyle. “Morty is in the hospital right now, let’s deal with this other stuff later! Call my Mom and Dad, let them know what’s happened and tell them I’ll meet them at the hospital, would you?”

“Of course I’ll phone them; I know how much Morty means to you and the Valentis.”

“Thanks Lonnie.” Kyle turned towards Tess.

“Let’s go.” Tess had her keys in her hand, she saw the look of protest Kyle was about to form on his lips but she put her foot down. "I don't care if we're fighting right now. There is no way I'm going to let you drive to the hospital on your own!"

Kyle only nodded than followed Tess out the door.

Kyle and Tess arrive at the hospital ...

Kyle burst through the double doors of the emergency room and charged straight towards the nurse’s station, leaving Tess struggling to keep up with his pace.

“Hi, I’m here to see Morty Rosenfield. He was brought in earlier tonight with a suspected heart attack.”

“Morty, Morty Rosenfield you say,” said the nurse as she typed out the name in her computer.

“Yes, Morty Rosenfield,” confirmed Kyle.

“Are you a family member?” asked the nurse.

“Yes, I’m his grandson,” said Kyle, without really thinking about it.

“Okay, he’s currently in ICU. The doctors won’t allow you to see him until he’s become stabilized.”

“How bad is it?” asked Kyle.

“I don’t know sir; the doctors have placed him in ICU to keep an eye on him after the operation.”

“Operation? What operation? How long has he been here?”

“I think you’d better wait for a doctor. Let me page his surgeon and he can explain everything. What’s your name?”

“It’s Kyle, Kyle Valenti.”

“I’ll get the doctor out to see you as soon as he can. Why don’t you take a seat, it might be a while.”

“Just tell me if he’s going to make it?” begged Kyle.

“I’m sorry sir; you’re going to have to wait to speak to the doctor.”

Tess gently laid her hand on his arm and pulled him away from the desk.

“Come on Kyle; let’s sit down until we can find out more about his condition.”

Kyle just nodded his head. He felt so numb right now. Nothing had prepared him for this. Morty was the most important man in Kyle’s life except, of course, for his father.

“I can’t believe this has happened,” whispered Kyle.

He was terrified of losing Morty. This had come as such a shock to him. He always seemed so healthy, old but healthy.

“I can’t lose him Tess,” whispered Kyle.

“Let’s just wait and see what the surgeon says. It might not be as bad as you think.”

“Jesus Tess, he’s had an operation. How is that not bad!” snapped Kyle.

“Kyle, I know you’re worried about Morty right now. I am too. He’s a good, kind man and I know we have a lot of stuff to go through but I’m here for YOU,” said Tess, as she placed a hand on his shoulder.

Kyle simply shrugged her off and stood up.

“I don’t even know why your here Tess. There’s nothing else you can learn from me here about Max, so there's no point in pretending you care anymore. You’ve gotten what you needed from me, why don’t you just go home.”

Tess knew he didn’t really mean what he was saying. It was just the pure fear of losing Morty that was making him snap at her, well that and the fact that she’d lied to him.

“I want to be here Kyle, for you, for Morty. I kinda fell in love with the guy the last time we saw him, besides he helped you when you needed it the most and that in my book makes him a saint!”

“Whatever,” said Kyle turning away from Tess. He couldn’t cope with her right now. It hurt too much.

“Do you want a coffee or something?” offered Tess.

Kyle scoffed at her offer.

“Why the hell do people think a cup of tea or coffee can make everything better!”

“Well, I’m sure your parents will need one when they arrive. I’m just going to see if there’s a vending machine around here and then I’ll be back.”

“Take your time,” spat out Kyle.

Tess scurried away with tears pooling in her eyes. She was praying that this could all be worked out between them. If she lost Kyle now she didn’t think she would survive it. She was completely and totally in love with him.

She flipped open her phone and dialed the only person she could think of.

“Liz, I need you.”

“Tess honey, what’s wrong?” asked Liz.

“I’m at the hospital, something happened tonight between me and Kyle. Oh Liz it’s all fucked up! We were in the middle of arguing when we received a call that Morty had, had a heart attack.”

“Who the hell is Morty?” asked Liz.

“He’s ... it doesn’t matter, can you get down to the hospital? Kyle’s giving me the cold shoulder, his family are about to arrive and I need some moral support. Also phone Max and let him know what’s happened.”

“Honey, you don’t even have to ask. Which hospital are you at? And of course I’ll phone Max.”

Tess hadn’t realized that she had been holding her breath. As soon as Liz agreed to come over she sighed with relief and rushed out the address.

“Thanks Liz.”

As Tess returned to the waiting room, with two cups of steaming coffee, she noticed that Amy, Jim and Lonnie had arrived.

“Great,” sighed Tess, as she rolled her eyes. “This is all I need.”

She handed one of the coffees over to Kyle who replied with a grunt and then offered to get more refreshments for the rest of the group.

Jim immediately noticed the frosty reception that Kyle was giving Tess but didn’t call him out over it.

“Does anyone else want some?”

“NO!” shouted Lonnie, while Jim and Amy looked at her like she’d grown another head.

“I’ll have one dear, white with one sugar,” said Amy.

“I’ll come and help you Tess,” replied Jim.

As they both walked down the corridor Jim couldn’t help but ask.

"Did you guys have a fight or something on the way home?" asked Jim, concerned by the frosty reception his son was giving.

"Or something..." muttered Tess.

"Oh don't worry about it kiddo. Couples get into fights all the time and it's not the end of the world. Why Amy and I used to have some hum dingers back when we first got married," Jim smiled as he put his arm around Tess' shoulder.

She turned into his comforting embrace.

"I'm sure Kyle will come to you soon and do the same thing I used to do to Amy; bring you a whole bunch of expensive flowers and beg for your forgiveness."

Tess snorts with laughter into Jim's side.

“I don’t quite think it’s as easy as that Jim.”

“There’s one thing I know for sure, Kyle loves you. Whatever this argument is about, it’s not worth it Tess. You’re here, now, when he needs you the most. That’s what counts. You may feel awkward or uncomfortable, but you’re here and he knows it. Besides, if he doesn’t then I’ll knock some sense into him.”

“That’s if I don’t get to him first!” said Amy, as she approached, magazine in her hand.

“So, Lonnie explained to me what happened before Kyle got the phone call,” said Amy, holding up the offending magazine.

“A.., I mean Mrs Valenti, I know what all this looks like and I...”

Amy held up her hand to stop Tess.

“First off, my name is Amy, use it. Secondly, Lonnie explained what she did tonight and, quite frankly, she had no business doing what she did. I know she loves Kyle like a brother and to be honest I feel proud that he has someone covering his back because of how he is, BUT I’ve never seen Kyle so happy, since he met you. He’s a completely different man when you’re around Tess.”

“I lied to him Amy,” whispered Tess, with tears in her eyes.

“Yes you did and that was wrong but I’m sure you never expected to fall in love with my son.”

Tess’s eyes whipped up to meet Amy’s.

“I am in love with him, more than you could possibly imagine,” whispered Tess. “I, I know you think I’m not good enough for Kyle. I know what’s been said about me in the media but it simply isn’t true, well maybe that part about me in Cancun but I swear Mrs Valenti; I had too much to drink then. Not that I drink a lot mind you, it’s just...”

Tess couldn’t believe the massive hole she was digging herself into, something about this woman just sent her nerves on edge!

Amy smiled at Tess’ rambling and put her arm around her shoulder.

“Tess, sweetie, everyone has stuff it their past. Hell, I was even arrested by Jim here back in the 70’s.”

Tess’s eyes bugged out of their sockets, Amy laughed at her expression.

"Yep he slapped the handcuffs on me and put me in the back of his police car."

"Yeah..." Jim smiled mischievously looking up as he was thinking of a fond memory. "I even have those same handcuffs back at home. We get them out from time to time and put 'em to good use."

"JIM!!" Amy admonished her husband by slapping him on the shoulder as she and Tess started turning bright red in the face.

"What?" smirked Jim. "Just trying to lighten up the conversation here is all."

Amy narrowed her eyes at her husband giving him a 'oh you'll pay for that one later mister' look before turning back to Tess

"As I was saying that’s another story, one that I will tell you when the time is right. The fact that you are here with my son, when he needs it the most and even when he’s being a total pain in the ass, speaks more to me than anything any magazine ever said about you.”

Tess blushes.

“Thank you.”

“Now let’s get our pig headed son to realise what a diamond this girl really is,” said Amy, linking her arms with Tess and Jim, leading them back to the waiting room.

Chapter 33

As Liz rushed into the hospital; she noticed a group of people sitting in a waiting room, to the side, as she approached the nurse’s desk.

“Hi, I’m here for Morty. Actually, I’m here for my friend who is waiting to find out about Morty. Her name is Tess.”

“Morty Rosenfield?” asked the nurse.

“Yes, that’s right.”

“The family are through there,” pointed the nurse.

“Thank you.”

She smiled as the small brunette walked into the waiting room. She almost laughed to herself at the family that had gathered before her. For someone who claimed to have no living relatives, next of kin, anything, Morty certainly had a lot of people waiting for news. She paged his surgeon again wanting to put the poor family out of their misery.
*******

As the minutes ticked by, Tess got more nervous about the outcome of Morty’s operation. What the hell was taking so long?

Just as she was about to get out of her chair and start pacing the room, she heard the door to the waiting room open. She couldn’t help the rush of breath that was released from her aching lungs as she saw the face of her best friend. She couldn’t hold back the tears and literally launched herself at Liz.

Liz immediately wrapped her arms, tight, around Tess’ small frame.

“I’m here Tess. We’re always here for each other, no matter what, right?” whispered Liz, into her ear.

Tess nodded as fresh tears travelled down her face.

A loud cough from the corner of the room broke the friends apart. Tess turned to face Amy and Jim and introduced Liz.

“Amy, Jim, Lonnie and Kyle this is my best friend Liz,” said Tess.

Both Amy and Jim stood up and shook Liz’s pro-offered hand while Lonnie looked like she was about to squish a big bug.

“So you’re the bitch that caused all the trouble,” spat out Lonnie.

“I beg your pardon? Who the hell are you?” snapped Liz, looking at the punk girl with contempt.

“LONNIE!” shouted Kyle, “THIS IS NOT THE TIME!”

“Actually, Kyle is right, this isn’t the right time,” said Max as he walked into the waiting room giving Lonnie a pointed look.

“I was just...”

“Excuse me a minute. I’ve just got to talk to my sister for a second,” said Max dragging Lonnie out of the waiting room.

“Huh? His sister?” said Liz with a confused look on her face.

“I’ll explain later,” replied Tess.

“How come Max is here?” asked Kyle with a smile on his face.

“Tess asked me to call him for you when she found out about Morty. She thought you could use the support and Max would want to know,” said Liz.

“Well I’m glad he’s here,” replied Kyle.

There was a brief knock on the waiting room door and then the surgeon entered.

“Hello. My name is Dr. Jones and I believe you are waiting to hear about Morty Rosenfield?”

“That’s right,” replied Kyle.

“Well he was admitted with severe shortness of breath and pain around the heart area. When we looked at his ECG we found a Heart Arrhythmia called Ventricular Tachycardia which is where the heart beats too fast. This can be life threatening so we decided to fit him with an ICD.”

“What the hell is an ICD?” asked Kyle.

“It’s an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. It’s a sophisticated piece of equipment that monitors the heart rhythm. When his heart starts to beat very fast the device sends energy to the heart to get it to beat normal again.”

“Well what does that mean?”

“It means he will have to take it easy, nothing too strenuous but with a few lifestyle changes and the ICD he should be able to live a fairly normal life.”

“So he’s going to be okay?”

“For now yes, but you have to understand that even with the ICD this arrhythmia is still very serious.”

“Can we see him?”

“I can only allow one of you in the room and I can only let you in there for a couple of minutes. He really needs to rest after the surgery.”

“I just want him to know that we’re here.”

“Okay follow me.”

As Kyle followed the doctor out, he could see Max with Lonnie just down the corridor.
*******

Once Kyle had left an awkward silence came across the room.

“I can’t do this anymore!” cried Tess, running out the room with tears streaming down her face.

“I’d better go after her. Sorry to have met you under these circumstances Amy and Jim.” said Liz as she ran after Tess.

“It’s fine. You go to Tess. I think she needs her friend right now. We’ll be here if Kyle comes back,” said Jim.

“Thanks.”

Liz ran out of the waiting room looking for Tess but couldn’t see her. She noticed Max pointing his finger towards the ladies bathroom. Liz nodded and smiled at Max before entering the bathroom.

Max and Lonnie...

“Well I hope you’re pleased with yourself Lonnie!”

“I was only looking out for you, even if we’re not family anymore,” replied Lonnie in her defence.

“Whoa, wait a minute Lonnie. You, Mom and Dad might have had a big fight where there was definitely screaming and shouting, ending with you being kicked out of the family but Isabel and I were not part of that. You’re still our sister to us. I don’t care if you like to dress different or are gay. I’m not my father Lonnie. I don’t care about appearances. You are my sister and I love you just as much as I do Isabel.”

“I know. That’s why I always have your back and Kyle’s. He gave me chance when no one else would. Those girls have been stringing you both along since they met you! Don’t you know that Liz sent Tess into the store to spy on you?”

Max couldn’t help laughing.

“What the HELL is so DAMN funny?”

At that moment Max witnessed Tess fly by them, with tears streaming down her face, and then run into the ladies bathroom.

“Oh Lonnie, if you only knew what Liz has done to get in to my pants, this wouldn’t be that big of a deal!”

“What? So you knew about this and you’re okay with it?” asked Lonnie.

Again Max noticed Liz run by looking for Tess so he pointed towards the bathroom, smiled and then turned his attention back to Lonnie.

“Actually, Liz told me a few days ago. Lonnie you don’t know the full story behind it. I was giving Liz a hard time. She was trying her best to get me to notice her. I thought because she was rich that she just wanted me as her play thing. It turns out that she’s looking for more than that. She sent Tess in to find out what kind of books I read so she could have something in common with me. Tess didn’t even know that Kyle was my best friend until he introduced us.”

“That still doesn’t excuse the way she’s treated him though Max,” replied Lonnie.

“How has she treated him? All she’s done is fall in love with the sap and he’s to freaking dunce or hurt to realize it. Yes it started off with Tess coming into the bookstore to find out information on me but she found something she wasn’t expecting. Kyle. She’s so in love with him Lonnie. Liz has never seen her act this way before and now you’ve gone and stuck your nose in business that didn’t really concern you in the first place.”

“Well, what’s done is done. There’s nothing I can do to take it back Max and to be honest I can’t see how either of you can have a relationship when it’s based on lies.”

“You’re not listening Lonnie. Liz told me. I’m sure once Tess was aware of that fact she would have told Kyle the truth. It’s just you got there first.”

“Well he deserved to know, both of you did.”

“I give up. I’m going to check up on Liz and Tess.”
*******

“Tess honey, are you in here?”

“R...right, h...here,” Tess hiccupped through her sobs.

Liz went to lean against the door.

“Oh honey, what happened?”

“Lonnie showed Kyle a picture of you me in a magazine. Now Kyle thinks the only r...reason I’m with him is because I w...was trying to g...get information on Max,” wailed Tess.

“Did he give you a chance to explain?”

“N...no. We were arguing when the phone call c...came in about Morty. What am I going to do Liz?”

“Look Tess, I told Max everything the other day and he understood. I’m sure once Kyle finds out Morty is okay he’ll give you a chance to explain.”

“You d...didn’t see h...how he looked at me Liz. He was betrayed. I don’t think he’s going to be able to forgive m...me.”

“Well maybe it's a good thing you broke up then," shrugged Liz.

"WHAT?!" said Tess in shock. "How can you say that? Who said we were broke up?!"

"Look all I mean is, he’ll never be able to take you to places like Alain Ducasse’s Adour in New York like Tyler did.”

“I don’t care!” sobbed Tess.

“Or to Tahiti, every summer, like Richard did.”

“I TOLD YOU I DON’T CARE!”

“WOW,” Liz shook her head in awe. “You must really be in love with Kyle.”

“Yes I am,” smiled Tess as she came out of the cubicle.

“Trust me Tess; I am positive that Kyle will come around.”

“You think?”

“I know,” said Liz, with a rather strange smile on her face.

Tess couldn’t quite decide if that was a good thing or not.

“Hey what’s all this about Lonnie being Max’s sister? The PI only told us about Isabel.”

“To be honest, I don’t know what her problem is. I only found out she was Max’s sister tonight while I was arguing with Kyle. I don’t quite understand it myself.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’m sure Max will explain later.”

Suddenly they were interrupted by a loud knock on the door.

“Liz, are you in there? Is Tess alright?” shouted Max through the door.

“Everything’s fine Max. We’ll be right out,” replied Liz.

Tess checked over her face in the mirror.

“I LOOK HIDIOUS!” shouted Tess, as she noticed the smudges of mascara under her eyes, plus the tear tracks in her foundation.

Liz just laughed. “Touch up your makeup and then I’ll see you outside. Are you going to be okay?”

Tess gave Liz a warm smile.

“As long as you’re here, I’ll always be okay.”

“See you in the waiting room,” replied Liz, as she walked out of the bathroom.

Also, in Morty’s room...

As Kyle entered the room the doctor gently placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Five minutes and then I’ll be back. No getting him upset or anything okay?”

“Okay thanks doc,” whispered Kyle, as he went towards the bed.

Kyle wasn’t quite sure what to expect when he walked into Morty’s room. He envisioned pipes, wires and machines surrounding the bed. What he found wasn’t half as bad as he had imagined.

There was an IV in one of Morty’s arm and a small wire leading to the plastic cover on his finger that was monitoring his heart. Other than that Marty didn’t look any different.

“Hey you big lug, you gave me the fright of my life!” whispered Kyle.

Suddenly Morty’s eyes shot open.

“Kyle my boy,” croaked Morty.

“The whole family is here to see you Morty but they would only let one of us in. You gave me a fright.”

“Ha, I’m just here for the sponge baths. Make sure it's that pretty red head nurse that gives it to me though.”

Kyle rolled his eyes.

“This is serious Morty.”

“Yeah I know, but I’m doing alright Kyle. I just got to make a few changes and I should live until my whole body packs up.”

“Just make sure that’s not anytime soon okay?”

“Where’s that little blonde bombshell of yours?”

“Erm, s...she’s back at the waiting room.”

“What’s going on Kyle?” asked Morty.

“Nothing for you to worry about that’s for sure,” replied Kyle.

Morty reached out and grabbed Kyle’s hand. It caused him some pain to do so and Kyle noticed the flicker in his eyes.

“Morty!”

“Tell me Kyle!”

“She, we ... I don’t know what’s going on right now.”

“What happened?”

“I just found out that Tess only came into the bookstore so she could find out information on Max.”

“She’s interested in Max?” asked Morty confused. He could have sworn that this girl was falling for Kyle hard.

“No, her best friend asked her to come into the bookstore to find out information on Max because she wanted to find something in common with him or something stupid like that.”

“So?”

“So she’s been using me Morty, to get that information.”

“Good lord, the youth of today can be so stupid,” bit out Morty.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” asked Kyle.

“Answer me one question Kyle, do you love her?”

“You know I do.”

“Then who cares how she came into your life?”

“She lied to me Morty.”

“No. She went in that bookstore to help out her friend. That says that she’s loyal to the people she loves. I’ve met her Kyle and she doesn’t seem the person to frequent a place like that very often. Are you getting what I’m trying to say?”

Kyle nodded and then shook his head.

“Yes, I mean, no not really.”

“She’s a high class woman Kyle. Don’t think I don’t know that. I noticed her skin, her nails. There isn’t a day gone by that girl has done a decent days work in her life. That means she has a Daddy that does it for her. Am I right?”

Kyle just nodded.

“And a woman like that is not in the habit of going into little bookstores like yours.”

Kyle shook his head.

“So then, why, when she’d already found the information she needed on Max, would she keep on coming back to the bookstore?”

A smile came across Kyle’s face.

“Exactly, she was there to see you. Yes, she may have come in there under false pretences but she came back for you Kyle. Listen, I almost died a very lonely man. I don’t want that for you. I don’t want you to have ‘what if’s’ going through your brain at your final hour. I know it sounds morbid but believe me it happens. You think about everything that has happened and how you would do it differently if you had the chance. I lost out on my one true love and all because of a misunderstanding and hurt male pride. Don’t make the same mistake as I did Kyle.”

Just as Kyle was about to respond Dr. Jones entered the room.

“I’m afraid your five minutes are up.”

“Okay thanks doc, I’ll be right out.” He turned towards Morty.

“Promise me you will make it right Kyle,” begged Morty.

“I promise, if you will promise to take it easy. Listen to the doctor and nurses and you’ll be out in no time.”

“I promise. Now go and get your woman Kyle. Grab hold of her and never let go. You’ll regret it if you do, believe me, I know.”

“See you in a few days?” asked Kyle.

“I’ll be counting the sponge baths until then!”

Kyle just groaned and blushed red as he passed the doctor and left the room.

As Kyle rounded the corner, heading towards the waiting room, he was suddenly blocked by a petite brunette. He noticed that Tess had just come out of the ladies bathroom when Liz started ripping into him.

“WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!” she shouted, as she poked him hard in the chest with her finger.

She poked him so hard, in fact, that he took a step back.

Kyle looked down at the finger that was continuously poking him and then back up to Liz. “ME?”

“YES YOU!” Liz poked him harder in the chest until Kyle bumped into the wall behind him.

“I was the one who sent Tess into that bookstore. She had NO IDEA that you were Max’s friend. What the hell difference does it make what circumstances you met under! All that matters is that she LOVES you with all of her heart,” yelled Liz as she continued to poke him. “I’ll be damned if I watch my best friend’s heart being broken just because of some STUPID MALE PRIDE THING!”

“But...”

“BUT? THERE ARE NO BUTS!” yelled Liz. “YOU EITHER LOVE HER OR YOU DON’T!”

“I...”

“This girl is fiercely loyal to the ones she loves. Do you know what she’s gone through for me? She’s been dumped in a closet, fallen off the ledge of a second story window AND been thrown in a fountain all so I could impress Max! NOBODY ELSE would have done those things NO ONE!!! Once she loves you, she loves you with everything she has and if you can’t see that then you’re not even WORTH IT!”

“Uh, yeah okay, I guess you’re right,” spluttered Kyle as Liz gave him one last shove against the wall.

“I swear if you hurt her I will make it my personal mission to make your life a living hell! I will rip out your intestines through your nose and then strangle you to death with them! And believe me I CAN DO IT!”

With that last threat Liz stormed off outside to cool down. She hadn’t meant to get that mad but she wasn’t in the habit of seeing her friend so broken.

Tess looked around a little nervously and then at Kyle.

“Hi Kyle.”

“Hi. Erm, I can kind of see how she’s had Max all screwed up. She’s a bit, forceful.”

Tess giggles.

“Er yeah, you don’t want to get in between Liz and something she wants.”

“Yeah I can see that.”

“Look Kyle, I’m sorry about not admitting the reason why I first came into the bookstore. I didn’t know you were Max’s friend until you introduced us that day. I never expected to find someone I love there Kyle, but the amazing thing was... I did. I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. It’s the last thing I ever wanted to do but you have to know that no matter what the reason for me entering that store was, it wasn’t what kept me coming back. It was you.”

“I was actually trying to find you so I could apologize about my behavior before, that’s before I got cornered by your pit bull friend who ripped me a new one.”

“Yeah, sorry about that,” laughed Tess.

“It’s okay. I deserved it Tess. I’m sorry for the way I treated you in the waiting room. I was so scared about losing Morty.”

“I know how much he means to you, it’s okay.”

“No it’s not okay. I shouldn’t have taken it out on you.”

“I guess we just had our first fight huh?” said Tess.

“Yeah I guess, but we have the time to make it up to one another,” Kyle said, as he wiggled his eyes up and down.

Tess launched herself into Kyle’s arms and kissed him passionately. Once they came up for air Tess whispered...

“I love you Kyle.”

“I love you too.”

Chapter 34

It had been two months since Morty was finally released from the hospital. Amy had thrown a very happy but very short welcome home party for him. He was doing well with the ICD and a few lifestyle changes, even though he complained about it a lot, even more than usual. Kyle made sure that he visited Morty at least twice a week. He always took Tess with him because he knew how much Morty enjoyed her company. She always managed to make him laugh, which was a miracle. Oh Morty had smiled before but Kyle couldn’t remember him ever roaring with laughter like he did with Tess.

After they’d shared that passionate kiss in the hospital, Kyle decided to take Morty’s and begrudgingly Liz’s advice. It didn’t matter how they met there was no way Kyle was letting Tess walk out of his life, not now. It had taken a while for Lonnie to come around but once she’d gotten to know Tess better she realized that she was just as down to earth as the rest of them. Lonnie was also surprised to find an ally within Liz. She accepted Lonnie warts and all and she’d spent some time with them at Max’s house.

Kyle and Tess’ relationship had become serious and that’s what brought them to this point.

“So Tess, are you sure you want to do this?” asked Kyle, as he looked at the building looming before him.

“Definitely,” said Tess.

They both got out of the car and headed towards the mansion. Kyle could feel the nervous energy coming off Tess as they approached the door. Turning towards her he could see that slight tremors were running through her body. He gently took her hand and turned her towards him.

“It’s going to be okay Tess, don’t worry about it.”

“You don’t know my father Kyle. I have a feeling this isn’t going to go over too well.”

“Then we’ll deal with it, okay. You have nothing to worry about.”

“Why on earth would a kind and loving guy like you fall for a girl like me?”

“The greatest wisdom is seeing through appearances. I could see through your blonde airhead, spoiled rich girl appearance the second you walked into my store. What I saw was someone who was hurt, lonely and just wanted to be loved for who she was not what she had.”

“Isn’t it funny how things turn out. If it wasn’t for Liz asking me to go into the bookstore we never would have met.”

“Remind me to thank Liz next time we go out on a double date,” smiled Kyle. “You feeling a little better now?”

Tess realized what Kyle had done.

“How do you always manage to calm me down without me really knowing it?” wondered Tess.

“The greatest goodness is a peaceful mind,” said Kyle, quoting one of his favorite Buddha quotes.

Tess just rolled her eyes.

“Come on Buddha boy let’s get this over and done with,” said Tess as she opened the door with her key.

As soon as they stepped into the grand reception room, Tess noticed Charles carrying a tray towards the study.

“Well I guess that means he’s home,” whispered Tess.

Charles noticed movement out of his peripheral vision and turned to look.

“MISS! I didn’t know you were coming back today. How are you?” asked Charles as he approached the couple.

“Charles, I want you to be the first to meet my Kyle. This is who I’ve been spending most of my time with.”

Charles gave Kyle a scrutinizing gaze as the man held out his hand.

“Hold on just one second,” said Charles. He turned around, entered the study and then returned after delivering the tray. He held his hand out to Kyle.

“Sorry about that. It’s a pleasure to meet you sir,” said Charles, shaking Kyle’s hand.

“You too Charles, I’ve heard so much about you,” said Kyle.

“Really?” said Charles turning to look at Tess.

“I can’t thank you enough for always being there and supporting her,” replied Kyle.

“Well I hope you realize that falls on your shoulders now sir. Look after her for me.”

“I will.”

“I have something I want to discuss with you later Charles but I have a feeling that after I’ve spoken to my father I may not be back here again. Do you have a number I could privately contact you on?”

“Of course Miss. I may be old but I keep up with the times. I have a mobile that you can contact me on. Here,” replied Charles as he handed Tess a card with his mobile number on it. Although he was wondering what she could possibly want to talk to him about.

“Thank you. Is my father in the study?”

“Yes Miss, he is.”

“Are you ready,” asked Tess, turning towards Kyle.

“As I’ll ever be.”

“Wish us luck Charles,” called Tess, over her shoulder as they made their way towards the study.

“I think you’re going to need it,” whispered Charles.

Tess knocked on the door and entered without waiting for a reply.

“I thought I told you I didn’t want to be disturbed Char...” Ed Harding’s words froze as he took in the sight before him. “Tess? I thought you were out for the day?”

“Actually DAD," Tess rolled her eyes at her father's level of obtuseness when it came to her life. "I’ve not been here for the past few weeks but that’s not important right now. I would like you meet Kyle.”

Kyle held out his hand.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, sir.”

Now although Kyle couldn’t stand the sight of the man because of how he had treated Tess all those years, he decided that he would still be respectful to him. For one, he was Tess’ father no matter how incompetent he might have been for the job and secondly, he knew that Tess was hoping everything would turn out okay, although he seriously doubted it.

Ed Harding was looking at Kyle as if he was something stuck on the bottom of his shoe. He gave him a hard look and noticed that he was wearing a t-shirt, jeans and boots. What was he, the hired help?

“What’s this all about?” said Ed, turning towards his daughter with a scowl on his face. He deliberately didn’t even attempt to shake the man’s hand.

“Daddy, this is Kyle my boyfriend.”

Kyle, once again, held out his hand.

Ed just looked at it and then turned back towards Tess.

“This is your boyfriend? Surely you can’t be serious?”

“Daddy please, Kyle is a successful business man! He owns his own bookstore in...”

Ed slammed a hand down on his desk making both Kyle and Tess jump.

“I DON’T GIVE A DAMN IF HE OWNS A BOOKSTORE IN RODEO DRIVE! Tess, we are the Hardings; we hire people like him to clean our cars or pools, we certainly DON’T DATE THEM!”

“Are you SHITTING ME!” yelled Tess.

“SEE! He already has you cussing like the trailer trash he is! He’s no good for you!”

“Tess,” Kyle placed a hand on her arm to calm her. He knew her father would probably say something along the lines that he already had. He had prepared himself for it and was in no way bothered about the man standing before him. If he didn’t respect him then his opinion meant nothing to Kyle and he didn’t want Tess to lose her father over it.

“For your information FATHER I’ve been cussing for years! You would know that if you were ever around to hear it. Kyle has more honor, humility, love and loyalty than you will ever have in your entire life! He saw past all the money and persona and loves me for ME!”

“More like your money you imbecile,” spat Ed.

“Actually Mr. Harding I’m not interested in your money. I'm not big into material possessions and so I have more than enough to live a very comfortable life.”

“You,” sneered Ed, pointing a finger at Kyle. “...do not know what you are getting yourself into. Do you honestly think you can keep a woman like my daughter happy? She’s used to the finer things in life. Can you afford to take her to Paris once a month?! Or pay for her to spend twenty thousand dollars in one shopping spree? I think not. It wouldn’t take her long to see you for the failure that you are and come crawling back here. I think you are in for a rude awakening young man.”

Tess just shook her head as tears started to run down her face.

“Is that how you see me? That I would only care about how much a person could spend on me? Actually you know what, don’t answer that. That might have been what I was like before I met Kyle but that's NOT the person I am anymore. But you don’t see me at all do you father? All this time the only thing I ever wanted was your attention and love, not money, expensive gifts or holidays. I just wanted you to notice me.”

“What are you talking about you stupid girl. I notice you! I think about you, that’s why I bring presents home when I’ve been away you ungrateful little brat. Have I not given you everything you’ve ever wanted?”

“Yes dad, you've given me everything that I ever 'wanted', but nothing that I needed! Just having you ask ONCE how my day had been or what I was up too while you were gone on one of your numerous business trips would have been better than any jewellery, furs or flashy car you brought back for me! But you know what? Kyle does see me. He does care about me and that’s why I love him. He understands me, never makes any demands on me and accepts me for who I am.”

“Oh I’m sure he does when he knows that you’re an heiress to an entire fortune! What about all your friends Tess? They won’t want to be around you when they find out that you’re with this, this man.”

“Then they aren’t really friends, besides the only person I really care about is Liz and she loves Kyle.”

Ed turned his icy glare onto Kyle.

“Do you really think that she'll be happy and stay with you for long when you can’t treat her like she's accustomed to?! ”

"You know sir," sighed Kyle doing mental chants in order to keep his temper under control. He was going to be the bigger man here and keep his cool. "There are many things in this world much more important than money. Love being the main one..." Kyle turned and smiled at Tess and was rewarded with a smile from her in return. "...the others being forgiveness and friendship..."

"Oh, save me this bleeding heart crap," Ed rolled his eyes before turning his glare at Tess. "Young lady, I want you to know that if you go through with this, if you keep this 'person' in your life then you will no longer be welcomed here, nor will you ever get any money from me!"

“Is that a threat dad?” asked Tess getting redder in the face by the minute. "Are you telling me that you actually hate the fact that I love Kyle so much that you'd rather throw me out of your life than let me have him in it?"

“It’s not an underlying threat Tess. If you proceed with this, so called relationship then I will cut you off so fast your head will spin!”

“And that’s your final word?” asked Tess.

“Yes.”

“Then I guess I’m not your daughter any more. Come on Kyle let’s get out of here,” said Tess, making her way towards the door.

“I’M WARNING YOU TESS. I’LL DO IT. I’LL CUT YOU OFF!”

Tess stopped at the door to look at her dad one last time.

"And I'M telling you dad that I don't give a flying FUCK if you do or not! Come on Kyle let's go!" Tess grabbed Kyle's hand and was trying to pull him out the door. Kyle gently patted her hand with his other to make her stop and then he turned to look at Tess' father.

“You know what Mr. Harding? I really feel sorry for you.”

“What? YOU feel SORRY for ME?” he asked incredulously.

“Yes sir I do. The tongue, like a sharp knife, kills without drawing blood.”

“WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN!” shouted Ed.

“It means that YOU killed the relationship you had with your daughter today with your sharp words and threats. You are going to die one very lonely old man. What good is all this...” asked Kyle, waving his hand around the room. “...if you don’t have anyone to share it with.”

“Do you really like all this drivel he’s sprouting Tess? He doesn’t have a clue about the real world.”

“Kyle don’t, he’s just not worth it,” said Tess as she opened the door to leave.

“I think it’s you who have failed to realize something Mr, Harding. If you had paid more attention to your daughter and your finances, you would have noticed that Tess hasn’t taken a penny from you in the last two months. She’s been supporting herself and doing a wonderful job at it I might add. So you see she doesn’t need your money. So what else do YOU have to offer HER?”

With that parting shot Kyle turned and walked out the room with Tess on his arm and quietly closed the door. Ed Harding was left totally speechless.

When they got outside and into the car Kyle turned to Tess.

“Are you okay? I know that didn’t quite go how you hoped it would.”

“I’m not really sure how I feel right now to be honest.”

“Well do you think we should have told him?” asked Kyle.

“No. We made the right decision. I didn’t want that clouding his judgement. I wanted to see the real reaction and I think I got that today.”

“I’m sorry Tess. That must be difficult to handle.”

“Actually, I feel like a great weight has lifted from my shoulders. I would never have known the truth if he knew.”

“We’re going to be okay Tess. I’m going to make sure of that.”

“I know Kyle. I love you,” said Tess, leaning over to give Kyle a brief but passionate kiss. “Thank you for coming with me today.”

“Tess I'll always be by your side." Kyle gave her that goofy smile of his that made her heart melt. "You don't even have to ask, I'll always be there."

“Take me home please Kyle,” whispered Tess.

Kyle started the engine, looked back at the mansion one last time and then drove off. Neither of them noticed Charles looking out the window of the servants’ quarters.

“He’s lost her,” he said to himself, shaking his head in disappointment. Now it was time for him to retire and enjoy the fruits of his labor. He’d waited long enough to do it. He was just happy that Tess had finally found the right man to be with. He had heard the tail end of the conversation going on in the study when Tess opened the door to leave. He had to chuckle at how Kyle quietly but firmly put the infamous Ed Harding in his place.

Meanwhile, across town...

“Are you okay?” asked Max.

“No. I can’t believe I let Tess talk us into doing this today,” whispered Liz, Tess’ words coming back to haunt her at that moment.

“If I'm going to tell MY dad about my secret love affair with Kyle then you're going to have to tell yours too!”

“Don’t you want to do it then?” asked Max, a little worried.

“Oh Max you know I didn’t mean it like that. Of course I want to tell my father. I’m just nervous that’s all.”

“Why? He seems a pretty decent man,” said Max.

“Yeah, but that was before he knew you were banging his daughter,” replied Liz in a dry tone.

Max just covered his eyes and groaned at Liz's phrasing.

"You know Liz, sweetie, I don't think that's quite the type of wording we need to use when we talk to your father."

"So you're saying I need to be more tactful?" beamed Liz.

"Yes," nodded Max. "If you're even capable of such a thing?"

"HEY!" Liz shouted as she jabbed Max in the side making him grunt in pain.

Max laughed at the look of indignation on Liz's face before a serious expression came onto his

“He’s going to kill me isn’t he?”

“Well at least he keeps his guns locked in a cabinet behind the desk. If he starts to walk towards it then I’d start running if I was you,” Liz said with a straight face.

“This is not helping my nerves Liz,” hissed Max.

It took all of her strength not to laugh. She couldn’t help it. She wasn’t really sure if she was joking or not. She didn’t really know how her father was going to react but had a feeling it wasn’t going to go down too well.

“Your father will see you now Liz,” said Serena, holding the door to his home office open. She almost laughed at the pure look of fear on Max’s face. She wanted to put him out of his misery, almost.

“Okay then, let’s get this over and done with,” said Liz, straightening her posture and raising her chin slightly. She definitely looked more confident than she felt.

“Liz! I didn’t think I would see you to...day,” Jeff gave his daughter a curious look as he noticed Max walk in behind her.

“I guess this is a business meeting then,” he mumbled as he looked between Max and Liz.

“Actually Daddy I have something to tell you.”

“Really,” said Jeff, narrowing his eyes suspiciously.

“I er, well I wanted to... I mean I need to...”

“She wanted to let you know that we’ve started dating each other Mr Parker.”

“MAX!” screeched Liz, whacking him on the arm.

“What? Well you weren’t going to spit it out anytime soon!” he defended himself.

Their antics made a chuckle rise in Jeff’s throat but he held it back.

“Okay. That’s it? That’s all you wanted to tell me?”

“What?!” asked Liz, turning towards her father not expecting that reaction.

Max started to feel uncomfortable. This was going too well. Any moment he expected Jeff to run to the gun cabinet and start shooting at him for just blurting out the information.

“I said, is that all you have to tell me?”

“Well what else would there be?”

“Thank god! For a minute there I thought you were going to tell me you were pregnant!”

“WHAT!” screeched Liz, even louder than before if that was possible. Plus, a rather nice red glow was now attacking her cheeks.

“Where did you get an idea like that from?”

Then it finally dawned on her what this meant.

“You knew? How?” she whispered.

“You don’t get to my position in a Fortune 500 company by not noticing things Liz.”

Liz blushed. “How long have you known?”

Jeff just smiled.

“I’ve known since you first came in here Liz, asking me to hire Max so the company could have a younger image. You’re not the reason I hired Max, he came with excellent credentials but it didn’t hurt him when I noticed my daughter had a crush on him.”

“OH MY GOD!”

“Look honey, I’ve gotten to know Max over the last few months. He’s a nice young man, a Harvard graduate lawyer with a bright future ahead of him. What’s there not to like? But let’s not forget the fact that he’s a HELL of a lot better than the normal rich drunk frat boys you’ve been known to go out with. As far as I could see it was a win, win situation.”

“But, but,” stuttered Liz.

“So you approve Mr. Parker?” asked Max, finally finding his voice.

“You have my blessings, just as long as you are married before you give me any grandchildren. I may be old fashioned but...”

Liz just groaned and hid her face in embarrassment.

“Dad, we’ve not even talked about stuff like that. We’ve only been dating for four months.”

“I think Max understands why I am saying this now. Am I right Max?”

“Yes sir. You want to make sure that there are no misunderstandings.”

“Exactly. Now I really don’t mean to be rude but I have to make an overseas phone call before it’s too late. Is there anything else you need to discuss with me?”

“Well no,” said Liz, still in shock.

“Okay then, let’s have Max over to dinner on Thursday and invite Tess along too,” offered Jeff.

“She’s also dating someone now,” blurted out Liz.

“Then offer him to dinner as well.”

“I will; thank you Daddy.”

With that she grabbed hold of Max’s arm and virtually dragged him out of the office.

“I think that went better than expected,” said Max as Liz closed the door.

“Yeah,” was the only word Liz could form at that time.

Epilogue

Seven months later...

As his tongue delved in to the sweet recesses of her mouth he couldn’t help the small moan that escaped his lips.

“God do you have any idea what you do to me?” asked Max, as he came up for air.

“Uh huh,” mumbled Liz, as she licked her swollen lips.

“God I never get tired of tasting you. Do you think that will ever change?” asked Max.

“I hope not. Do you realize that one more month and we’ll have been together for a year!?”

“Yes I know." nodded Max.

"This is a record for me," smirked Liz. "About eight months longer than any other relationship I've ever been in!"

Max rolled his eyes good naturedly.

"Kyle and I have something special planned for that night but before you start, I’m not telling you what it is.”

A petulant pout came on Liz’s lips.

“That’s not fair. What am I supposed to wear on this night out?”

“Oh, no you don’t. You are not going to get the information from me that way.”

"Oh and just what way should I use to get information out of you?" Liz smiled mischievously as one of her hands started to slide down towards a rather sensitive area on Max’s body.

"Uh no little missy," smirked Max, as he grabbed her roving, groping hand. "You are just going to have to wait to find out."

Liz just huffed and crossed her arms across her chest.

Max just laughed at her antics. She looked like a sulky four year old who had just been denied sweets.

“Come on Liz, don’t you want it to be a surprise?” said Max, as he lifted his cup to his lips and took a sip of coffee. It took all his strength not to spit it back out. “Oh god, it’s cold. I can’t stand cold coffee!”

“Stay there Max. I’ll go and get you another cup,” offered Liz, as she stood up.

“You sure?”

“Of course, I’ll be right back.”

Max and Liz were sitting together at what was now known as the Kyle/Tess table. None of the regular patrons dared sit at that table, understanding the significance of it but even the new customers were kept away by a reserved sign, the only one in the whole bookstore.

“One refill of black coffee please,” said Liz, as she walked up to the counter and placed the cup down.

“Coming right up Liz,” said Tess, as she turned around, smiled and then started to prepare the coffee.

“Why don’t you come and join us at the table?” asked Liz, as Tess handed over the black coffee.

Tess took a quick look around the bookstore to see how busy it was.

“I guess I could take a break. Can you handle it Lonnie?”

“Shoot, I was doing this by myself long before you ever showed up here gal, besides I got my new buddy here, now shoo, go and sit with your friends. I’ve got it covered here.”

“Thanks Lonnie,” said Tess, smiling at her new found friend.

Tess prepared herself a small coffee, took off her apron and walked from behind the counter.

“How are you feeling honey?” asked Liz.

“Like a beached whale,” said Tess, patting her extremely large, pregnant stomach as she waddled her way towards their table.

“Hi Max,” she said, as she finally took the weight off her feet. “Oh god, it feels so good to sit down!”

Max chuckled. “Feeling the strain of standing on your feet, while seven months pregnant are we?”

“Oh you have NO idea, but don’t tell Kyle or he will insist that I give up work until the baby is born.”

“Here you go honey,” said Kyle, as he came to sit down at the table and produced a strawberry muffin, from behind his back, for Tess.

“Oh a cupcake, honey you’re the best!” replied Tess as she took a bite of the sweet cake.

“Nothing’s too good for my girl. Anyway, what shouldn’t they tell me?”

Tess rolled her eyes good naturedly.

“Nothing, my feet are a little sore and swollen from standing on them too long.”

“I told you that you should give up work until the baby is born!” stated Kyle.

“See what I mean Max? I swear he thinks I’m an invalid!”

“Well maybe you can come to a compromise,” said Liz.

Both Tess and Kyle looked up at Liz waiting for her to continue.

“Why don’t you get a chair behind the counter so that when there aren’t any customers, Tess can sit down? That way she won’t have to give up work and you will put your mind at rest.”

“That’s not such a bad idea,” replied Kyle.

“Wow Tess, if you’d have told me a year ago that you would be married, had a child on the way and ran your own bookstore, I would have called you crazy!” said Liz.

“Yeah, me too,” replied Tess, as she got a faraway look on her face.

FLASHBACK.

Kyle had just finished serving a coffee when he turned to face Tess. She could tell that something wasn’t right from the moment they got out of bed this morning. She couldn’t quite place what was wrong but Kyle had been acting weird all day, jittery she supposed was the word she would use for it. He was doing a lot of pacing and muttering to himself.

“Kyle, what’s going on?”

“Going on? What makes you think anything is going on?” said Kyle; with a panicked look on his face. "I mean there's nothing going on here!"

"Uh huh," Tess nodded her head not believing a word he was saying. “Then explain why it is you’ve been acting weird all day, since we got up this morning. If I didn’t know any better I would say, for want of a better word, that you were nervous about something but what?”

“I, well I, oh crap!” sighed Kyle. “I was going to do this tonight, up on the roof, under a full moon with wine and candles. It was going to be romantic; at least that’s what I was aiming for.”

Kyle gently took Tess by the arm and led her from behind the counter and into the poetry section of the bookstore.

Tess looked around confused.

“Kyle, what are we doing here? I already stocked these shelves this morning.”

“I, well see, oh hell I’m no good at this stuff!” said Kyle, rubbing his hands together in nervous frustration.

Tess gently laid her hand on his arm.

“Kyle, just calm down and tell me what’s going on. I’m sure it can’t be that bad.”

“You know I still can’t believe that a woman as beautiful and sophisticated as you, who could have anybody she ever wanted, would want to settle with a lowly bookstore owner like me.”

“What? What the hell are you talking about Kyle? Lowly bookstore owner indeed,” said Tess, placing her hands on her hips and tapping her foot. “I should smack you around the head for a comment like that! I love YOU Kyle. You are the kindest, most loving man any woman could ask for. I don’t care if you own a bookstore or work on checkouts. I love you for YOU!”

A sudden goofy grin came across Kyle’s face at her words but then became nervous once more.

“Look Tess, the day you came into my bookstore...” said Kyle, before he was interrupted.

OUR bookstore Kyle, OUR,” emphasized Tess.

“Uh yeah right, OUR bookstore,” Kyle said shaking his head. “Wait, will you just let me finish, please?”

“Sorry, go ahead.”

“The day you walked in to THE bookstore and I spilt coffee down your dress was one of the best things that ever happened to me.”

“Even if you ruined my eight hundred dollar dress?” quipped Tess, with a smile on her face.

“Yes, even if I ruined your eight hundred dollar dress. Tess please, this is hard enough as it is and I don’t want to screw this up.”

“Kyle, you’re not making any sense here. What’s wrong, you’re starting to scare me.”

“I wanted to give you this,” said Kyle, as he reached in to his shirt pocket only to find it empty.

Tess watched in shock as Kyle's eyes suddenly got so huge he looked like he was doing an excellent impersonation of an owl.

“NO, NO, NO! This can’t be happening!” said Kyle, as he frantically patted down each of his pockets.

A sudden look of relief came across his face as he felt the square object in his pants pocket.

“As I was saying, I wanted to give you this,” said Kyle, holding out the little black velvet squared box.

“Oh my god,” whispered Tess, tears starting to pool in her eyes. With shaking hands she gently pried open the box and gasped at the beautiful ring.

“I uh, well I know it’s small and you’re used to bigger, much bigger diamonds but it was all I could really afford at the moment. If you don't like it maybe I could get another job to earn some more money? Or maybe I could hit up Max for a loan...”

Tess just cried out, “I LOVE IT KYLE,” before launching herself at him and kissing him breathless.

“You don’t know how happy you’ve just made me!” squealed Tess, as she kissed his cheeks, eyes, nose, practically any skin that was available.

Even with all the squealing and kissing Kyle was still a bit nervous. “So I take it that means yes, you will marry me?”

“YES! YES! YES!”

END FLASHBACK

“Tess! TESS!” said Liz, snapping her fingers in front of her friends face.

“Oh sorry, I was just thinking back to the time when Kyle proposed,” said Tess, with a soft grin on her face.

“Aw, it was SO romantic the way you proposed in the poetry section,” said Liz, gushing at Kyle.

“Yeah, it was,” sighed Tess.

“Oh god, have you seen those two?” asked Max, pointing to the counter trying to hide his laughter behind his hand.

They all turned to see what he was pointing at. It was a sight like no one could imagine. Lonnie wearing a t-shirt of some heavy metal rock band none of them had ever heard of, camouflage cargo pants and sporting a nose ring bigger than any she'd worn before. But standing there next to her looking completely the opposite of Lonnie was Charles. He was clean cut and wearing a three piece suit that looked more expensive than some people's car!

“See’s, then you’s put this under da nozzle and press da button. Make sure you’s have da cup under there or you’s make a mess,” said Lonnie, as she slammed down the cup. “Are you’s down with that Charles?”

Charles just looked at Lonnie for a second, then down at the cup and back up again.

“Yes, I am definitely ... down with that!” said Charles nodding his head talking as if he was some teenager instead of a fifty something year old sophisticated man.

Lonnie turned to look at the others, shook her head and pointed her finger towards Charles, the whole group burst out in to roaring laughter.

“Who’d have thought those two would get on so well?” said Liz, with a big smile on her face.

“Well when you first told me about how Charles had quit on your father and how you had hired him to work part time here, I have to admit I had my reservations, what with my sister and all,” said Max.

“I know. I thought that it would take Lonnie a long time to warm up to him but as soon as he opened his mouth I think she realized that she could have some fun!” replied Kyle.

“Oh you should hear them when they get onto a serious topic! They are as bad as each other. It’s actually quite fun to watch,” said Tess.

“I’m glad you hired him,” said Kyle.

“Yeah, me too,” said Tess, as she got that faraway look again.

FLASHBACK

Tess looked around the small row of apartments. She thought they looked very cozy, small but still cozy none the less. It had come as a shock to her to learn that Charles was no longer working for her father and was living here now. The word she had gotten through the servant grapevine was that her father and Charles had, had a huge argument over something, possibly her. Much to her father’s shock Charles had turned in his notice and declared he was done working for him and was retiring.

Once again taking in the small apartments Tess could only shake her head. As far as she could ever remember Charles had always lived in a small room in the back of the mansion near the kitchen. Always ready to jump to service anytime her father had shouted. That living arrangement had also come in handy back when she was a kid and her father had taken off on one of his very long business trips.

As she raised her hand to knock on the door she couldn’t help but hesitate as a childhood memory came flooding back to her.

Flashback

A six year old Tess came bounding into the mansion’s dayroom, her long blonde hair pulled up in pigtails and her school uniform flapping in the breeze, caused by her running.

"HI CHARLES!!"

Charles turned around from dusting the table. A smile spread across his face as he looked down to the small but cute bundle of energy at his feet.

"Well hello there Miss Harding! How was your day at school?"

Tess giggled as she swayed back in forth in place.

"My name's not Miss Harding! It's Tess!"

"Well yes I know that," smiled Charles, as he knelt down to be eye level with the young girl. "It's just a show of respect to call you that."

"What is show of russ...pect?" Little Tess stumbled over the big word.

“Well a show of REspect is...” Charles started to explain but was cut off when Tess’s attention span changed to something else.

"Where's my daddy Charles?"

"Oh dear I would have figured one of the maids would have told you by now," stuttered Charles nervously. "Well you see my dear, your father left this morning, not long after you left for school. He's on a business trip to Tokyo; he'll be there for two weeks."

A stunned Charles then watched in horror as tears started to form in the little girl's eyes.

"But...but...he promised he'd take me to the movies to see the Lion King tonight!"

When tears started to flow down the girl's rounded cheeks, Charles turned to curse under his breath. He reached inside his breast pocket and took out his handkerchief.

"Now now there's no need for all of this crying," said Charles, as he used the handkerchief to wipe the tears off Tess' cheeks. "I tell you what, how about you go upstairs and have Julie run a bath for you and let her get you cleaned up and changed. Once that's done maybe I can take you to the movies to see this, Lion King thing, after we have dinner?"

Tess' eyes grew huge. "Really? You'll take me to see The Lion King?!"

"I don't see any reason why we can't," said Charles, who was then shocked when Tess ran to him and threw her small arms around his neck and placed her head on his shoulder.

"THANK YOU CHARLES! I LOVE YOU!"

"Well," an out of his element Charles nervously patted Tess' small back. “I love you to Miss Harding."

End Flashback

Tess shook her head and wiped a stray tear out of her eye that the memory had caused.

“Okay Tess Harding 'soon to be Valenti' you can do this,” she said to herself, as she knocked loudly on the door.

“Tess my dear, it’s so good to see you again,” said Charles as soon as he opened the door, engulfing the petite blonde in his arms.

“It’s good to see you Charles. I was so happy when you agreed to see me.”

Charles pulled away from Tess, gently led her into the apartment, shut the door and motioned for her to sit down.

“Why wouldn’t I agree to see you Tess? You’ve been a major part of my life for the last twenty years and your mother before that. Anyway, you said there was something you wanted to discuss with me?”

“Yes, there is. I, well, er, you see Kyle proposed to me a while back and I’m getting married in a few months time. I was wondering if, well if, I mean would you mind walking me down the aisle,” stuttered Tess.

Charles was shocked to say the least.

“What about your father Tess, isn’t it his right to walk you down the aisle?” asked Charles.

“He gave up his rights as soon as he made me that ultimatum Charles." Tess' eyes narrowed in anger. "To be honest he gave up his rights back when I was a kid. I know you didn’t have all the details but you’ve seen how he’s treated me all these years. Do you honestly think I want a man like that to walk me down the aisle, not to mention he can’t stand the sight of Kyle and vice versa. The last thing I need on my wedding day is to have my soon to be husband arrested for punching my father!"

“Are you sure dear? He may have been a total pain in the ass but he’s still your father?” asked Charles.

“I understand what you’re saying Charles. You don’t want me to regret it later on in life,” hedged Tess.

“That’s exactly right. I know what he said to both you and Kyle hurt but what if, in the future, he tried to atone for his mistakes. Wouldn’t you regret not asking him?”

“Not in the slightest. I told you that day that I wished you’d have been my father and it still stands to this day. I can’t think of anyone I would want more to walk me down the aisle than you,” stated Tess, firmly.

“Then it would be my honor Tess,” said Charles with tears in his eyes.

He noticed Tess was looking around the apartment nervously.

“What is it Tess?”

“H...how would Mrs Worthington feel about you doing it?”

For the first time in her short life Tess actually heard Charles laugh. Not just a light laugh but a gut wrenching belly laugh.

“Oh my dear child, there is no Mrs Worthington. I’ve never been married.”

“NEVER!” shouted Tess in shock. “Why the hell not?”

“I was in service Tess. I lived at the mansion for thirty years. Don’t get me wrong, there were women in my life but once they knew that I wouldn’t give up my position in service they didn’t stick around.”

“Are you telling me that you don’t have any family of your own?” asked Tess, in total shock.

“I was the only child Tess. My parents died about twenty years ago. There is no family for me to speak of,” said Charles.

“But ... but that’s ridiculous!” shouted Tess, getting more distressed by the minute. “Are you telling me that because of your loyalty to my family, you never got a chance at a happy life?”

“Oh sweet child, I did have a happy life. I watched a beautiful little girl grow up into the most amazing, strong willed woman I know. I couldn’t have hoped for more,” said Charles truthfully.

The fact that Charles had given up his life for her and her mother made her want to cry. How could a man be so selfless and then she thought of Kyle. Kyle was the sort of man who would do the same thing. She recalled the conversation she had with Kyle at dinner the other week and she realized it was the perfect solution.

“So what are you doing now that you have retired?” asked Tess, with a slight smile on her face.

“Honestly?”

“Honestly,” replied Tess. She really wanted to know.

“I’ve been going stir crazy! I’ve been golfing, swimming, reading books and anything else I can think of to kill the time! I’m not used to sitting around doing nothing and to be honest it’s driving me mad!” said Charles.

“Then I think you and I can help each other out,” said Tess, a big smile appearing on her face.

END FLASHBACK

“Well, I think we should drink at toast to our future,” said Max.

“I agree,” said Liz.

Kyle raised his coffee cup.

“To my best friend, who without her, I would never have met my loving husband!” said Tess.

“To Kyle, for showing Tess that she really did deserved to be loved and why I loved her also,” said Liz.

“To Liz, for showing me the error of my ways and for threatening to rip out my intestines and strangle me with them,” said Kyle with a smirk on his face.

“I’ll get you back for that remark Valenti,” threatened Liz.

“Hey who am I supposed to drink to!” said Max, a little miffed he’d been left out.

“Hmmm ... to Max, for finally understanding The Art of Seduction,” said Liz, laughing.

They all brought their coffee cups together and toasted to a future that they hoped would be filled with adventure, love and family.
