Hi, I'm Wendy, and I'm a Doctor Who addict

I watched DW as a kid during the era of the Third and Fourth Doctors, carried on with less diligence during Peter Davison's tenure as Five, and gave up when Colin Baker came along as Six. I was hooked again from the very first episode I saw of the return of DW with Chris Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor, and I now love David Tennant's Ten as well. While I didn't care for Martha by the end of her run, I love Rose and Jack and adore Donna. My fic is mainly of the shippy variety, particularly - though by no means exclusively - OT3 with Rose, Jack and the Doctor. I also write friendship fic with Donna, and slash or UST-slash with the Doctor and Jack. While I can and do write the Torchwood crew as supporting characters, I'm not and never will be a Jack/Ianto or Jack/Gwen shipper. That should give you an indication of what to expect with my fic!

I'm Irish by birth and upbringing, lived for 16 years in Britain and am now living in Canada, and I'm always happy to help with Britpicking - I'll admit now that my three top peeves in fanfic are poor spelling and grammar, out-of-character writing and Americanised dialogue/cultural settings that simply don't fit. (For any authors who'd like to improve their cultural and dialogue references, I recommend the LiveJournal community dw_britglish).

It is a pretty place. Broadly speaking, all the people with money move to the little towns south of Columbia (Ashland, etc), and all the people with no money move north (Hallsville, Sturgeon, Centralia). Obviously, there are exceptions, but north of Columbia, you'll find a much higher percentage of gorgeous, rolling acreage, with a 20-year-old single wide trailer stuck on it and a '69 Chevy up on blocks in the front yard. (Of course, I'm far more upscale-- I live in a *double wide*!)

Hehehe! My sister and BIL will love that area north of Columbia, then. My BIL grew up a typical redneck. My sister's favorite story about her introduction that family includes the moment when she realized she was eating roadkill for dinner. (A deer that her sister-in-law had hit with the truck.) Add in the fact that they're an army family, and they definitely aren't looking for the upscale areas! I'm pretty sure my BIL will break into hives if he isn't living near fellow small town rednecks, LOL! They're looking at getting out of the army in about a year and a half, so they're shopping for property now and would want to put a trailer on it until/if they eventually build a house, whenever that might happen. Thanks for the tips! I'll pass this info on to them!

Is that because you just lost interest in the show around that time, or is it becaues you didn't particularly like Five and Six? I haven't gotten to know the Classic Who episodes yet, so I'm very curious as to what it is about the older doctors that is or is not appealing.

And it sounds like your ships and likes/dislikes are pretty much in line with mine, which explains why I've been lurking around your stories for so long!

It was a very weird experience. I loved Three, and loved Four as well as soon as I got used to him. Then I heard that Peter Davison would be the Fifth Doctor. I was a huge fan of Davison from All Creatures Great and Small, so was pretty excited about him coming to Who... and then, when I actually saw him as the Doctor, I didn't like him in the role. I don't know whether it was because I kept seeing Tristan (his character in All Creatures...) or whether he just seemed too different from Pertwee and Baker, but he just didn't work as the Doctor for me. I'm fairly unusual in that respect, though, because Davison has a huge following as Five. Mind you, which Doctors you like really has a lot to do with who your first Doctor was.

As for Six, I saw a few of his episodes and... no. Did nothing at all for me. Never watched Seven at all, as I'd gone off DW by then. I did watch the TV movie, and then got into New Who, mainly because I've also been a fan of CE and also because I heard it was worth watching.

I really don't pick up accents easily at all. I never had all that strong an Irish accent to begin with - while it was recognisably Irish, it wasn't 'Oirish', if you know what I mean. After I moved to the UK, the accent softened to the point that a lot of Irish people didn't recognise it any more and thought I was English, but it was never English enough to fool the English I don't think I've picked up anything of a Canadian accent at all, though I do use North American vocabulary at work (most of my clients are ESL-speakers, so it's not fair to confuse them). I still pronounce words the British way - tomAHto, not tomAYto - though last week I did catch myself saying 'later' with a hard 'd' sound in the middle instead of the soft 't' sound that's natural for me.

Wow, lots of Who Fans. I thought there were just a small group of us. I used to watch the show when Tom Baker was the Doctor and then Peter Davison. Both are my favourites from the past. But I have to say, LOVE David Tennant as the Doctor. I will be sorry when he leaves the role to pursue other things when the time comes. But I am enjoying him now.

I'm also a fan of Torchwood. Followed Mr. Captain Jack to that show and love it as well. I love how the two shows are connected in so many ways. Been lucky to meet two actors from Torchwood. Would have loved to seen David Tennant as Hamlet though!

Wendy - definitely not TMI! I sat here saying "later" both ways, playing around with the pronunciation for longer than I should admit, LOL! It's also very interesting hearing how you reacted to the Doctors. I can definitely see how your first Doctor, and your past experience watching "All Creatures" would've affected your ability to fall in love with Davison as the Doctor. One reason I was interested in DW was because of CE, too, btw. I avoided it for awhile because I thought the show would be cheezy, but it really has far more depth than I'd expected.

Jazz, how very cool to see you here! In light of today's announcement about Tennant leaving the show, your comment is especially poignant! I'm going to miss him so much. I really loved the depth he gave his character. Dameruth posted this really sweet "Thank you" to Tennant over on her LJ that did a great job of summing up the fantastic job he did in expressing such a wide emotional range. And I'm with you: I wish I could see him as Hamlet, too!
