Part 11
“Whitman! Get your cute ass up here!” Isabel yells in anger
‘Uh oh’ Alex thinks.
“Uh oh is right MISTER!” she yells as Alex comes up the hallway with a drink in his hand
“Iz… I was trying to hurry, here’s your drink,” he says trying to figure out what had happened since they got home for their friends house. They had barely made it in the door before Isabel was literally ripping his clothes from his body. Not that he was complaining, it was two hours later and she had seemed satisfied but then she had asked the question every man dreads.
“Well maybe if I wasn’t so FAT, I could have gotten the drink myself, ” she says while looking at him with disdain.
“Honey, I never said you were fat…remember I said the other day you were looking skinny?” Alex says as gently as possible
“Yes, you did but then when I asked you if my legs were looking a little heavy, you said it was good for me to put on weight” she replies, still angry
“I didn’t mean it that way and you know it. You look amazing and it doesn’t matter if you did put on weight or not, you’ll always be beautiful to me:” Alex says, trying to dig himself out of this hole he seems to have gotten in
“So you do think I’m fat!” she yells in horror.
Alex stands in the middle of the room looking her in shock. Not wanting to say any more, he moves over to get in the bed to comfort her.
“OH no you don’t!” she yells throwing a pillow at him “Go sleep on the couch, and don’t try to talk to me, I’m closing our connection until you learn you can’t call me fat!” she cries. Pulling the covers up and waving her hand she turns off the lights.
Alex stands in the room by the bed staring down at her, “Isabel,” he says softly, When he gets no answer, he tried to call her name thru his connection only to find that she had closed it.. He grabs the pillow and walks slowly downstairs. After he settles on the couch he lays awake trying to think what in the hell could be wrong with her…maybe this was an alien thing. After sometime, he drifts off to a light slumber still thinking about Isabel.
Hearing a sound Alex opens his eyes and looks around. He glances over at the clock on the wall, only to find that he had only been asleep for about 30 mins.
“Maybe I should check on her,” he says out loud. Deciding this was a good idea he gets up to walk quietly up the stairs.
‘Ok, that’s weird. The door is closed’ he thinks. He puts his hand on the doorknob and is hit with an intense flash, making him stumble back ‘what the hell!’ Rushing into the room Alex is horrified at what he sees, it looks as if a battle has taken place…and Isabel is nowhere in sight.
“Isabel!” Alex yells hoping he’s in some bad dream and she will come and fix this
Getting no answer he rushes to the window in just enough time to see a Limo and someone pushing a very upset Isabel into it. He forces himself not to jump out the window after her, he stops for a moment… to gather his thoughts. Grabbing the cell phone off the dresser he throws on pants, a shirt and shoes as he runs down the stairs and out the door. Dialing the cell phone he hears Michael pick up “Isabel…Cal…HURRY!!” He screams and then hangs up throwing the phone down he runs out the door.
“Isabel!” he yells as the limo starts to pull away.
‘ALEX!!!’ he hears in his mind
“ISABEL!! ISABEL!!!” Alex yells running with all his might to catch up to the speeding vehicle, as he runs out of breath and it turns the corner Alex trips in his haste, jumping back up he tries to run after it again, looking up he can’t see it anymore.
‘I LOVE YOU!’ he hears from Isabel in anguish and fear as he feels their connection open and close abruptly.
“NO!!! NO!! ISABEL!!” he screams as he falls again
Alex faintly hears the sound of a car pull up behind him and footsteps as he lays on his hands and knees on the ground, tears are streaming down his face. The anger building up in him is like nothing Alex has ever felt before, his hands begin to glow and the ground begins to shake. He hears Maria and Tess gasp as the windows in all the cars on the street burst sending glass flying all around him.
“Alex” he hears Liz say softly
“She’s so scared Liz, I only felt her for a second but she’s so sacred…” he trails off putting his head down. Liz fights tears as she looks back at Max and Michael, both of them still shocked at what Alex had done. Michael breaking out of his shock first, walks up to Alex and scoops down to pick him up. Realizing Alex is not a gangly little boy anymore he decides rather then setting him on his own two feet he would carry him.
“We’ll get her back, I promise you….” trying not to choke up Michael whispers to Alex as he breaks down in Michael’s arms. Everyone was quiet as they walked back to the house, Michael carrying Alex the whole way.
After Alex had cleaned up some they all sat in quiet letting it sink in, no one knowing what to say.
“I have a plan that may work but it’s going to take all of us… Cal can’t see me, not yet” Lonnie said hopeful, what she had witnessed between Alex having powers and what Michael had done for Alex she knew she had to help them no matter what…even if it meant her life.
Alex looks her in the eyes, trying not to be hurt looking at her, knowingly he nods his head “I’ll do anything to have her back safe and sound…anything.” Alex says looking over at Max, the meaning in his words very clear …he didn’t care if the entire world found out about them, he would get her back.
Max looks over at Michael, a quiet understanding passes between them. “Whatever it takes… we’ll do whatever it takes,” Max says. “ What’s your plan Lonnie?”
As they start to form a plan Michael gets up to get a drink, as he’s walking by he feels a hand rest on his arm, “ Thanks,” Alex says looking up at him.
“Welcome.” Michael answers back as he walks into the kitchen, stopping at the sink to gain control of his emotions Michael feels small arms wrap around him as he breaks down.
“We will get your sister back space boy” Maria says softly
Wiping his face he turns to take her in his arms, hugging her tightly. “We have to. When I pasted by Alex he touched me, he sent me what she was feeling Maria…I’ve never felt fear like that…we have to bring her back to us…” he said trailing off putting his face in her neck and holding back a sob. Maria caressed his back as he broke down; she had never seen them like this. Kyle wasn’t even cracking jokes, and he hadn’t let Tess move more then a foot away from him.
After a few minutes Michael and Maria walked out into the living room where everyone was finishing up.
“Ok so it’s settled.” Lonnie said
“Yep at first light…we go after Cal…and get Isabel back.” Alex stated
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cal stepped out from behind the bluff where he had hidden Isabel and stood there, defiant, facing the small group of would-be rescuers assembled against him fifty yards away. He looked at each one for a moment, taking stock of his situation, then scowled… “Be smart and go home… all of you! This isn’t your fight anymore. It’s out of your hands. This ill-advised vendetta will only get you killed if you persist in it.”
“You’re wrong,” Alex yells back, “It is our fight. It’s my fight! Isabel and I are bonded! You must know that by now, Cal.”
At the mention of the bond Alex and Isabel shared, Cal shuddered uncontrollably, but only for a moment…
“I warned you! I’m not responsible for what happens to you now. You have chosen your fate. Your deaths… are on your heads.”
Cal had no sooner uttered the last word of his threat than he drew his hand back behind his head like a major league baseball player preparing to throw the winning no-hitter; only this was no game… and in Cal’s mind, it was no contest either. He had given them a chance. They had rejected it, ignored his warning. It was not so much that he cared what happened to them really; it was just… well, it would have been tidier his way… if they had just gone home. Now it would be messy.
Cal brought his hand forward with an unimaginable force, heaving a massive ball of energy through the air. Max dove for the ground, taking Liz with him, as Michael dove the other way with Maria. Tess and Alex, thinking the same thing at the same time, shoved each other, and the crackling ball of energy passed between them, striking a rocky outcrop behind them and vaporizing it.
Max and Michael did not hesitate to return Cal the favor. Even before they had risen from the ground, both fired off a blast of energy from the palms of their hands. Either of these blasts would have incinerated an average man easily, but Cal was not an average man. Technically, he wasn’t a man at all… even in Antarian terms. He was a shapeshifter. Using the backs of his hands, he deflected the blasts with almost no effort at all, sending them flying in different directions.
Hoping Cal would not be expecting alien powers from her, Liz stepped forward and threw three quick blasts; and Maria, who was standing beside her, threw another, in rapid succession; but these suffered the same fate that Max and Michael’s had.
Although, on some level, Cal was actually enjoying this display of his superiority and dominance over the group opposing him, he did not intend to merely stand there all day and parry with those less powerful than himself, much less with the pathetic and insufferable “lesser” beings they had chosen to align themselves with. They had managed to dodge a simple blast, but he doubted they would be able to cope with a scattered blast. It was one of his specialties… or, it once had been. The truth is, in recent years, Cal had had little reason to use these particular powers; but this fact did not seem to have diminished his abilities. Cal moved his right hand to the left side of his face then immediately slung the hand out; and as he did, a stream of energy emitted from his palm and broke up into about twenty smaller masses. These flew at his pursuers like a fiery hailstorm that could not be avoided. Reacting at the same time, Max and Michael threw out a force field; and as Cal’s blasts hit the shield, they broke into even smaller masses, some of which were deflected. However, not all of them were… and Maria and Kyle were hit. A quick check, fortunately, told Max that the damage to both was slight, and he would be able to heal it later.
Angered and horrified at seeing Kyle and Maria hit, Tess closed her eyes and concentrated, and a nearly invisible sheet of energy from her mind leapt across the gulf between them, plunging Cal into the core of an energy holocaust. Any human, in Cal’s position, would have been killed. Every blood vessel in their body would have burst. But Cal was not human. He had seen it coming and had hastily shielded himself. After the wave of energy had passed, he dropped the shield. But what happened next even Cal did not foresee…
A blast caught him squarely in the middle of the chest, causing him to stagger backwards momentarily. As energy blasts go, this one was not that powerful, but it had caught Cal totally unprepared. It had come from Alex.
Cal quickly regathered his wits about him…
“So! The little scorpion has a stinger!”
“And he’s not afraid to use it,” Alex postured threateningly.
Cal grinned, his confidence unwavering even if his feet momentarily had. “Your feeble blasts are impressive, I suppose… for a human. But they’re nothing to me. I should have guessed that the bond you…” Cal stumbled over the words for a moment, and he seemed to be having a hard time saying it, “Your… relationship with Isabel… would give you some kind of ability. But I’m embarrassed for you, frankly. It’s almost sad to see how pathetic your meager powers are. You’re truly no threat to me. On Antar, you would barely be amusing to a three-year-old. Still, you must know that you have sealed your fate.”
“I’m shaking,” Alex said defiantly. Actually… he was. But he was not about to let that fact be seen. In any case, he wasn’t sure that it was from any fear of Cal; he accepted whatever might happen to him now. It was the anger and indignation that he was feeling because of what Cal had done to Isabel that caused him to shake.
Cal seemed to wind up his arm, preparing for the throw. Alex wondered if there was any advantage to this or if Cal was just being overly dramatic. There was no question that the shapeshifter and one-time royal protector was powerful, but he did have a flair for the drama. It had to be a result of his time spent as a movie director on earth. Even so, a good director knew when to call for action. Cal brought his hand forward powerfully and threw another mass of energy, this time directly at Alex. Alex dodged to one side, avoiding it, but Cal brought his other hand up unseen. It was already glowing with a mass of crackling energy that he had been hiding, and Alex was not prepared for it. Off balance from dodging the first blast, there was no way he could avoid this one… Alex put his hands in front of his face, as the powerful mass of energy slammed into him.
Cal waited… and watched… for Alex to fall apart and disintegrate… or burn up… or something! After several very long moments, Alex slowly lowered his hands and looked at them. It was hard to say who was more surprised… Alex… Cal… or Max, Michael, and the others…
“How did you do that,” Tess asked breathlessly.
Alex shook his head and looked at his hands again. “I don’t know. I felt it coming, and then I felt the heat against my arms and hands… then it was over. It just… disappeared.”
Shaken to the core, Cal stared, disbelieving. What he had just seen was patently impossible; yet, it had happened. By all appearances, Alex had just neutralized his most powerful blast. No one had ever done that. Cal didn’t even know that it could be done. He had never heard of it ever being done before.
Alex turned and looked at Cal, then without a word or a moment’s hesitation, he threw a blast back at him. Cal put his hands up to deflect it, as he had done so easily before. But this blast was something different. It lifted Cal off the ground and threw him backwards twenty feet. He landed hard.
Liz looked at Alex, her eyes wide… “Alex?”
Alex looked at his hands again. “I don’t think it disappeared, Liz… I think I absorbed it somehow. It energized me.”
Liz smiled and looked at Max, and Max nodded then looked at Michael. Michael grinned back and looked at Tess and Kyle. They all had a sense that this was a turning point. Their chances against Cal, which had always been a long shot, had just gotten dramatically better.
Cal knew it, too, and he was not about to let them take advantage of it. Without hesitation, he threw four masses of energy at Alex in rapid succession. They struck their target forcefully, but each seemed to be absorbed as soon as it touched his body. This time Alex knew that the energy Cal had released against him was not gone. He felt it surging in his body, and he knew what to do…
“Cal! I think you lost something!” Alex spread his hands apart rapidly, and as he did, an immense mass of energy grew between his hands. Cal knew it was coming and prepared for it as best he could…
Alex swung his hand down and back and then brought his arm forward, heaving the surging mass. It rolled and tumbled erratically along the ground, distorting and expanding as it went, incinerating sticks, tufts of grass… even rocks, which superheated and exploded in its path. Cal turned to run, but the mass of energy tumbling in his direction was bouncing back and forth erratically… and on top of that, it was still growing; already, it was too large to outrun with any certainty, and Cal knew that his shield was not going to stop this. He made a split-second calculation and lunged to the left, hoping that the erratic ball of energy would bounce the other way… It didn’t.
“Strike!” a very exuberant Alex yelled, as the odd crackling and popping phenomenon bounced directly into and rolled over the fleeing kidnapper, sending him crashing face down into the dirt with the power of half a dozen bolts of lightning. Everyone was cheering… even Kyle.
Michael wondered out loud if they had witnessed the end of Cal. He certainly looked dead enough. Max stared at the smoking carcass sprawled on the ground fifty yards away and started to nod. But as they watched, Cal rolled over, smoking and addled but still alive. He took one quick look at the friends gathered against him and did the one thing none of them expected; though in retrospect, they all knew that they should have. He concentrated for a very brief moment, and his body began to shift and change shape. Almost at the same time, the ground began to shake. As the friends struggled to stay on their feet, some clinging to each other for support, a chasm opened up between them and Cal, and thick black smoke began to pour out, obscuring everything on the side that Cal was on. When the smoke had cleared enough to see again, Cal was gone… and so was Isabel.
