Thanks again everyone. Part 18 Back at the manor Phoebe is flying through the cupboards throwing seemingly random spices, herbs, candles, and potions onto the kitchen table. She’s barking orders, but still in shock, nobody responds appropriately. Paige is the first to break through the Phoebe-rage. “Uh, Phoebe, what just happened back there? And what are you doing?” “We have no time. We have to cast the spell for Cole. Where the heck is that Tate-cursed-into-the-locket potion!” Piper quietly reaches over and takes a small potion bottle out of Phoebe’s wildly swinging left hand, “This one?” Phoebe collapses into a kitchen stool, burying her head in her hands. A few stifled sobs escape. Paige and Piper sit on either side of her, each place a comforting hand on her shoulders. “I know time is of the essence,” Piper glances around at the Phoebe-destroyed kitchen. “But could you spend a few seconds catching us up?” Leo pipes in, “You projected your premonition to Cole to show him how to get the amulet, right?” Phoebe nods. “But your premonition shows him failing?” Paige asks incredulously. Phoebe nods again. “But there’s a way around it right? Now that you know how he fails, you can find a way around it right?” Piper searches Phoebe’s eyes for confirmation. “I mean your premonitions are to help us change the future. Tell us what you know and we will come up with a way to help Cole succeed.” Phoebe looks at Leo and shrugs. The sisters turn their attention from Phoebe to Leo. “Leo?” Piper questions, but Leo and Phoebe seem to be communicating silently. “Leo!” Piper demands, “We can change what Phoebe saw, right?” Slowly Leo pulls out of his eye-lock with Phoebe and focuses his attention on all 3 sisters. “No, actually. You can’t.” “Then, what are we doing with all this stuff?” Paige points to the ingredients Phoebe has strewn about the kitchen. Ingredients for an apparently very strong spell. “It is up to Cole to change his destiny,” Leo continues, apparently ignoring Paige’s question. The sisters look back to Phoebe who is scribbling furiously on a piece of paper. When finished, she stands up and starts throwing ingredients into the cauldron. “We need blood, skin, and hair from all three of us if this is going to work,” she informs them. Piper holds up the Tate potion still in her hands, “Still need this?” “It’s the last ingredient,” Phoebe nods. Meanwhile, Paige starts reading the spell that Phoebe has just transcribed. “Whoa, what are we trying to do here? Make Cole into a good witch?” “Raynor protected the amulet by making sure only evil could get through the first door and only good could get through the second. And not just any good being, a Warren descendent,” Phoebe explains. “So we should have gone with him,” Piper reasons. “No, only one being can pass through at a time.” “Then it’s impossible for anyone to get the locket,” Paige exclaims. Phoebe doesn’t answer, and Piper shoots Paige a warning glance. “What?” Paige mouths. Phoebe continues her explanation calmly; “This spell will cloak Cole in Halliwell essence to trick Melinda’s locket into believing that he is a Warren descendent. He needs to open the locket to get through the second door.” “Yeah, I remember now. Only a Warren descendent can open Melinda’s locket,” Piper recalls when Prue inadvertently set Matthew Tate free. The sisters had needed Melinda’s help to curse Matthew back into the locket. She took the locket with her for safekeeping, but the sisters had stored away the Tate-cursing potion as an extra precaution. “But how did Raynor get the locket?” Piper questions. “Maybe he went back in time. I don’t know. I just know what I saw.” “So, you’re sure this spell will work?” Piper asks reading it over. “I saw it happen,” Phoebe announces solemnly. “What exactly did you see?” Paige blurts out, earning another warning look from Piper. “I saw Cole open the locket, and then I saw Matthew kill him.” <div style="text-align:center">~~~</div> <div style="text-align:center"> I used to have the longing to hear what was in your heart. Part 19 &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “Are you sure you want to do this? Maybe there is another way?” Piper wonders. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Phoebe pricks her finger with the knife letting 3 drops of blood fall into the mixing potion. She passes the knife to Piper and glances back at Leo. He nods. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “It’s his destiny,” she answers. Back in Raynor’s lair &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Cole stands facing the keyhole with Melinda’s locket in both hands. “Come on Phoebe. Come on,” he coaxes. He wonders briefly if Phoebe has changed her mind about casting the spell that led to his death. Premonition flashback &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Cole places the opened locket into the keyhole and immediately the door opens. Matthew Tate materializes just inside the doorway. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “Ha ha! I’m back!” He announces triumphantly. Then he regards Cole with curiousity, “So, the rumors were true. The Charmed Ones do create powerful male descendents. Well, your mistake is setting me free again, Mr. Halliwell. I’m going to end the Warren line once and for all!” &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp He advances on Cole, only to bounce off of an invisible barrier and land on his back. He tries to blink out of the room, only to fail again. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Cole laughs, “See the locket in the keyhole? This is still your prison. Raynor made sure of that. This keyhole sets you free only into that room, where his most prized possession is. He assumed that you would kill anyone trying to enter the room to steal it. Care to prove him wrong and let me pass freely?” &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Matthew is clearly angered by the clever way in which Raynor has trapped him, but not angered enough to overcome his hatred of the witches who cursed him for so long. “Are you kidding me?” &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “OK, it’s hard way for you then.” Cole advances into the room and shoots a fireball at Matthew. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Matthew easily freezes the fireball and then redirects it towards Cole, “Your parents, grandparents, or whatever, conveniently forgot to strip me of their powers the last time they cursed me. And did they also forget to tell you not to use your powers directly against me?” &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Cole dodges out of the way of the first fireball but is surprised by the second one, which hits him squarely in the chest. Phoebe’s spell was apparently way too good. Matthew can copy Cole’s powers, as if Cole really was a good witch. Quickly, he heals himself and then blurs out. He surprises Matthew by appearing behind Matthew with an athame. Cole grabs Tate in a one-armed headlock, ready to slit his throat, but Matthew quickly blinks out of his grasp. However, the brief contact triggers a premonition, which shows him Cole’s tactical plan. Matthew sees himself throwing an athame at Cole, only to have Cole use his powers to switch places with him at the last minute. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Appearing in a darkened corner of the room, Tate calls the athame to his own hand, using Prue’s power. Cole shrugs and conjures a new one in his own hand. Quickly, Matthew throws the athame at Cole. Just before Cole uses his demon power to switch places, Matthew freezes the knife in midair. Then having gained Cole’s power to switch, he again swaps places with Cole. Before Cole can recover from the switch, Matthew immediately freezes Cole and unfreezes the athame. Cole wriggles out of the freeze, but it is too late. The athame hits him squarely in the chest. Tate freezes Cole again and takes the other athame out of Cole’s hand and plants it in his abdomen. Then he launches fireball after fireball at Cole, refreezing him every time he struggles free. Unable to unfreeze long enough to heal himself or blur away, Cole succumbs to the attack and begins to burst into flames. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Tempus suddenly appears from where he has been watching the fight cloaked in the ceiling of the outer room. He has been programmed by Raynor to appear as soon as the locket opens the door. He is the last defense. Smiling, he walks over to the door and pulls the locket out of the keyhole, pulling Cole and Matthew back into the locket. Then clapping his hands together, he resets the day so that nobody will know that Cole is stuck in the locket, dying. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Cole suppresses the urge to scream in agony at reliving his death. He has to reserve all his energy if he is going to succeed. Back at the manor &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp The sisters are waiting for the potion to cool before adding the last ingredient and reciting the spell. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “My God,” Paige is exclaiming. “Tate can copy all of Cole’s powers and become immune to them? It’s going to be impossible to defeat this guy. All those powers, and they will be useless.” &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “Well, not if he can string them together in the right way to kill Tate before he can copy them,” Piper muses. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “I guess it’s a good thing he has so much demon firepower. He’s going to need it,” Paige states. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Everyone looks at Phoebe who has been uncharacteristically silent during the exchange. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “Actually,” Phoebe says, “Cole’s firepower is not his biggest asset. It never has been. It’s his intelligence. He became one of the most powerful demons in the world because he was the smartest. If anyone can figure out a way past Raynor’s trap, he will.” &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp At first everyone is surprised at Phoebe’s renewed faith in Cole, but then they realize that she is right. &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “OK, Piper,” Phoebe announces. “It’s ready.” <div style="text-align:center">~~~</div> <div style="text-align:center"> I used to have the longing to hear what was in your heart. Awwww, thanks for all the great feedback. Sadly, we are almost done with this fic. I will miss it! I need my Shimmer fix! PiperPhoebePaige, I hope you kicked butt on those finals! Buffyrosfan, yes, this last season was a bit much wasn't it? Tracie, no worries. I know you much more RLS to deal with than I could ever handle! --------------------------------------------------------------- Part 20 Cole realizes there are 3 keys to outsmarting Raynor’s clever safeguards. First, he has to get rid of Tempus. There was no point to killing Tate only to have Tempus pull the locket from the keyhole trapping Cole inside the locket for eternity. If Tempus had the chance to pull the locket and reset the day, Cole might not be dead, but he may as well be. Nobody would ever know to come save him. Second, he couldn’t touch Tate. Tate’s premonition showing Cole’s strategy would be the end of him. Finally, he couldn’t use any powers directly against Matthew. No point in giving Matthew all of his firepower. Just as he starts formulating his plan, the locket springs open. He presses it immediately into the keyhole, opening the door, and releasing Matthew into the inner room. “Ha ha! I’m back!” Matthew is announcing triumphantly, but Cole ignores him. He draws his hands in a large slow circle, mustering the largest fireball he can. Matthew’s eyes widen in surprise and fear and he quickly tries to blink behind Cole, only to be bounced back into the room. “What the hell?” But Cole again ignores him. He turns suddenly at the last minute and launches the fireball into the upper corner of the outer room behind his left shoulder. Tempus materializes as the fireball hits him and screams out in anguish. He looks in surprise at the man who has somehow discovered his hiding place, but Cole disappears in a blur. As he begins to burst into flames, Tempus tries to clap his hands in a last ditch effort to save his life by resetting the day. However, to his dismay, he finds that Cole has re-materialized behind him, and is holding his arms far apart, preventing him from using the only power that will save his life. Once done with Tempus, Cole blurs out of the corner of the ceiling and back in just outside the door to the inner room. Tate, having discovered he cannot leave the inner room, stands face-to-face with Cole. “You are indeed a powerful witch. The Warrens have come a long way,” he spits with disdain. “And you are a stupid Warlock,” Cole spits back. “Look, are you going to just stand out there like a coward, or are you going to come in here and fight me like a man?” Tate shoots back. “I was hoping to make a deal with you, but I can tell now that you are much too stupid for that,” Cole answers. “And why would I make a deal with a witch whose ancestors have cursed me in this horrible fashion?” Tate asks incredulously. “I can tell you aren’t very bright. So, I suggest you shut up and listen very carefully. I AM NOT A WITCH.” Tate stares dubiously. “It’s a witch cloak, dumbass. Does this look like a witch power to you?” Knowing magic cannot pass through the magical barrier, Cole blurs into the room briefly to shoot another super-fireball from his hands, but carefully aims it away from Tate. Tate studies the scorch marks on the wall and a small light begins to flicker in his brain, but he still looks back at Cole doubtfully. Cole then begins to blur in and out of the inner room and outer room. “Does this look like a witch power to you?” He asks again, landing finally in the inner room. He studies Tate’s face for a flicker of recognition, but can tell that Tate is still dumbfounded. “God, do I really have to spell it out for you?” He conjures an athame into his hand out of thin air. “You are a demon?” Tate questions unbelievingly. “No, it must be some kind of trick. The locket cannot be fooled.” Cole suddenly throws the athame at Matthew’s head and reacting without thinking, Matthew freezes the athame and Cole. He stares disbelieving at the now frozen demon, but still unwilling to trust anyone who has opened his locket, he turns the athame around with Prue’s power and with a flick of his hand causes it to be thrust into Cole’s chest. With a groan, Cole breaks out of the freeze, pulls the athame out of his chest, heals himself and blurs back to the outer room. “Coward,” Tate taunts. “Look, I don’t have time for stupidity. You DO know that your power to freeze doesn’t work on good witches, right?” Cole asks, his voice dripping with disdain. Tate hangs his head in shame and then nods. “Yes, I do remember that about Melinda’s power.” “So you still think I’m a witch?” “You must be a powerful demon to be able to fool the locket of such a powerful witch,” Tate muses. “OK, what’s your deal?” “Yes,” Cole answers simply, “I’m the most powerful demon in the world. And if you cooperate, I just might let you be my right-hand man when I reunite and lead the underworld.” “Well that is a big promise from a man I do not know. I am new to this world. I have no idea if you really are the most powerful demon in the world. I’m not taking your word for it.” “Fair enough,” Cole answers. “My deal is simple. My now late boss has you guarding one of his biggest treasures in that room. You let me in and out of that room unharmed, and I will set you free.” “I can get out of here without you,” Tate answers defiantly. “Oh really,” Cole challenges. He reaches over, pulls the locket out of the keyhole, and slams it closed. “No!!!!!!!!!” Matthew screams as he is pulled back into the cursed locket. Then, just as quickly, Cole opens the locket and places it back into the keyhole, releasing Matthew back into the inner room. “Damn it,” Matthew curses as he rematerializes in the inner room and once again tries to blink out of the room, unsuccessfully. “Where is the treasure?” Matthew demands. “Look, I’m not stupid like you. I get the treasure. I set you free. Take it or leave it.” Cole answers. Matthew ponders the situation, unhappily. “Don’t think that some Halliwell witch will come along and free you. This is your only chance to be free and exact your revenge on those witches.” Cole continues. Matthew realizes that this is his only chance to be free. Never trust a demon, but what choice did he have. No witch would ever willingly set him free, and it was unlikely those witches would be fooled into accidentally opening his locket again. Even if he knew where the treasure was, he would never be able to leave the room with it. He had to trust that the demon would keep his word. “Besides,” Cole says with a wicked smile, “refuse and I’ll kill you.” “You couldn’t or you would have by now,” Tate answers suspiciously. “Actually,” Cole responds, “I think I can.” Taking a chance, Cole walks back into Tate’s room and uses his demon-scan power directly on Tate. He reads all of Tate’s powers and weaknesses, realizing that his single greatest fear was fire. He was so afraid of being burned at the stake himself, that he made sure the only person who could sell him out was burned first, Melinda Warren. “I know your weakness.” Rubbing his hands together, Cole creates a small fire to burn around Tate. Matthew freezes in fear of the fire surrounding him. Laughing, Cole waves his hands and the flames extinguish. “Go ahead, use my power back on me,” Cole invites him. “I think you will see that I do not have the same problem.” Matthew quickly recovers from the fire incident and eagerly uses the demon-scan on Cole. He is alarmed to discover how many powers Cole possesses, among them, the power to withstand fire without being burned. He realizes ruefully that Cole has been careful not to use any actively dangerous powers directly on him so that Tate would not be able to gain from them. But deep inside, Tate still knows that this demon is not to be trusted. If he can only get close enough to touch him and discover his end game. Then, he could gain the upper hand and possibly still manage to get free. “OK,” Tate replies. “Deal, shake on it?” He extends his right hand to Cole. Cole rolls his eyes and then blurs directly into the far corner of the room. He reaches his hand through the wall and pulls out the amulet. Then, just as Tate tries to freeze him, he blurs to the other side of the room. He wags his finger at him. “Tisk, tisk, tisk,” Cole laughs. “You didn’t keep your end of the deal.” He blurs to the other side of the room again, avoiding another freeze, “We never shook on it!” Tate protests. Cole hangs the amulet around his neck and then rubs his hands together. Immediately, the room bursts into flames and Tate is paralyzed with fear. Calmly, Cole walks through the high flames and over to Matthew, patting his shoulder mockingly. “Oh, I’m sorry. You wanted to see your future? Go ahead.” Matthew Tate screams as his premonition of his burning death merges with current reality. With a calm satisfaction, Cole watches until Matthew is gone. Then, he strolls into the outer room, takes the locket out of the keyhole, hangs it around his neck, and blurs away. <div style="text-align:center">~~~</div> <div style="text-align:center"> I used to have the longing to hear what was in your heart. Part 21

Back at the manor

After the spell to cloak Cole in Halliwell essence was completed, Phoebe immediately started lighting white candles and gathering ingredients for a new spell.

“Now what?” Paige asked.

“I want to have the restore a soul potion ready,” Phoebe answers. She looks up and faces her sisters with quiet confidence. Tears are shimmering in her eyes as she recalls the events of her premonition, which could be occurring right now.

“Nothing but positive thoughts while making this potion,” Piper warned with a smile.

“Well, of course, we might as well be ready for when Cole returns,” Paige chimed in. “Do you think he’ll know to bring it with him?”

“Yes,” Phoebe replies with a thankful nod and smile.

Paige reaches into her back pocket and pulls out the sheet of paper on which she had transcribed the ingredients for the potion. “These ingredients will combine to make a powerful protectant that will drive away evil and heal the soul,” she muses.

Piper nods as she reads over Paige’s shoulder, “Dragon’s blood, frankincense, mugwort, and sage. That’s so simple; it’s perfect.”

“Heal the soul,” Phoebe repeats. “He is the one who has healed mine.”

“And we will restore his,” Piper reassures Phoebe.

Phoebe begins to drop the ingredients into the cauldron. Each of the girls then pick up a white candle and simultaneously light the mixture causing a slow, steady burn. After several minutes, they each extinguish their own candles and watch the potion burn out.

“Any minute now,” Paige whispers.

Just then, Cole blurs in with his father’s soul in his hands. The girls notice the locket and amulet he is now wearing around his neck. Piper and Phoebe scream with delight as they descend upon Cole. He sets the soul down carefully on the kitchen table and lifts each sister up in a single-arm embrace.

“You’re back! You made it!” Then looking back at Phoebe who hasn’t moved, they continue, “Not that we ever doubted you for a minute.”

He sets the girls down and approaches Phoebe slowly. She walks deliberately to meet him halfway and they celebrate in a long passionate kiss. The greeting lasts so long that Piper and Paige begin to wonder whether they should leave the reunited couple alone.

“I can’t bear to ever watch you die again,” Phoebe says breathlessly in between smooches. “So don’t.”

“I think that’s up to you,” he answers with a smirk, pointing to the half amulet around his neck.

Phoebe reaches up and takes Melinda’s locket off his neck, handing it to Piper.

“I’ll just put this in a safe place for the next naughty Warlock,” she quips.

Phoebe then reaches inside her blouse and pulls out the other half of the amulet and places it gingerly around Cole’s neck arranging the amulets so that they are barely touching.

“Pick up your father’s soul,” she directs him. She checks on the burning potion, which has just flickered out. “It’s ready,” she announces. She looks back to Cole who is standing with his father’s soul carefully held in both hands.

“You ready?” she questions.

He takes a deep breath and nods. Phoebe ladles the potion into a goblet and touches it to Cole’s lips. He drinks the hot potion slowly and carefully. When he finishes the girls start chanting.

<center>“Powers that be, hear us three.
Restore this soul that we’ve set free.
Drive away the evil that rests within.
Make this man human again.”</center>

They watch in fascination as the glowing ball resting in Cole’s hands turns into a swirling light, circling him. The light swirls faster and faster around him until he is surrounded in a glowing light. Unexpectedly, Cole begins to scream as he takes on the multiple demon forms of the powers he has stolen in the wasteland until he finishes in a roar as Balthazor. Finally, his demon form flickers for a moment and then disappears.

“What happened? Where did he go?” Phoebe demands. The girls turn about in confusion, not knowing how to answer.

Part 22

“Now what do you want?” Piper asks in exasperation.

“We’re not giving up our powers,” Paige warns. “Didn’t you learn anything the first time around?”

“I’m not here for you,” the Angel replies.

“This is about Cole isn’t it?” Phoebe asks, fearing the worst. “Are you here to bargain for his life in some way?”

“Bargain? Oh no no no. That is not how I operate. I offer choices; that is all. I am here to reward Cole for fulfilling his destiny.”

“Reward him how? Where is he?” Phoebe demands, still suspecting some foul play.

“What do you mean, where is he?” The Angel glances around and then nods apologetically in his deliberate manner. “I’m sorry. I usually appear only to the being who has fulfilled his or her destiny. Since you three already knew me, I thought I would let you in on the conversation, but I’m not used to doing this. I didn’t get it quite right.”

As he fininshes speaking, he opens his arms and Cole suddenly reappears before them in full human form. The amulets have merged and there is an air of invincibility about him.

“So, did it work? Did it really work?” Phoebe asks incredulously.

Cole beams, “Yes, you did it. You all did it. I am finally human again, and I have saved my father’s soul. I feel wonderful.”

“And the amulet?” Piper questions.

“Yes, the amulet is fully functional. It became activated as soon as he was no longer evil,” the Angel answers.

“So,” Cole challenges with a sly smile, “what’s this about a reward?”

The Angel nods simply, “You have fulfilled your destiny by conquering your demon half and restoring your soul. We wish to recognize your accomplishments and your proven track record of being an agent of good, by giving you back any demonic power of your choosing. You will not have to worry about evil consequences. You will have the power without the evil aftertaste.”

“Wow,” Paige gasps. “Any power? Imagine the possibilities. You can be powerful again. You had a lot of great powers.”

“Well, this will solve the problem of being a passive bystander. So, what was your favorite power?” Piper wonders aloud.

“Does he have time to think about it?” Phoebe asks. She wants to be sure that Cole chooses the most advantageous power for himself.

But before the Angel can reply, Cole interrupts. “I need no more time. There is only one power that I yearn to own again.”

“Of course, it is yours once again,” the Angel answers. He opens his arms once again and then announces, “It is done. Again, it has been a pleasure girls.”

As the Angel of Destiny disappears, Phoebe turns to Cole with a questioning glance. “What did you choose?”

“The shimmer of course,” he replies seductively as he shimmers himself into her arms.

“The shimmer? But that’s not.” Phoebe begins to protest.

But Cole silences her with a kiss. “How else would I be able to take you to our anniversary spot?”

“The south of France?” Phoebe whispers barely believing her ears. Cole could have chosen any number of powers and he chose to make her happy.

They embrace again and shimmer away.
