Never Leave Me
Disclaimer: I don’t own or have any rights to the characters from the Harry Potter books. Those credits go to J.K. Rowling, Scholastic, Bloomsbury and Warner Brothers. And the title is pinched from another Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which belongs to the awesome Joss Whedon. When I run out of Buffy titles to steal, I suppose I'll move on to Angel. ;)

Chapter One – Goodbye To You

June 1996

Ginny Weasley was dreading the summer holidays like some people dreaded a visit to the dentist for a root canal. She had begged Harry to plead with the headmaster to give him permission to stay at the Burrow for the summer, but he only shook his head and told her,

“There’s nothing that would make me happier than to spend the summer at the Burrow, but Dumbledore has said repeatedly – I have to stay at least part of the time with the Durlseys.”

“That’s just not fair,” said Ginny with a pout.

Harry patted her hand sweetly and kissed her on the forehead. “I agree,” he said with a sigh. “We can only hope after a month or so, your parents will liberate me from Dursley hell.”

“I’ll liberate you myself if they won’t!” said Ginny emphatically.

Harry laughed. “And I believe you would,” he said, hugging her tightly and stroking her flaming red hair.

Ginny sighed. “Three more days – you don’t think Dumbledore would let us stay at Hogwarts all summer, do you?”

“I don’t know about Dumbledore,” said Harry. “But I’m pretty sure Molly Weasley will object."

*****

The journey to Hogsmeade and the train station was particularly bittersweet. Ginny took a last longing look at Hogwarts castle as the carriages clunked along the road to the village. She sighed heavily and thought of everything that had happened over the last school year. Her fourth year had been somewhat of a turning point in her life. She had learned so much, confronted her darkest fears and …

She turned to look at Harry, who was seated beside her in the carriage. The best thing that happened to me this year, she thought.

The carriage came to a halt and the doors swung open. She could see the steam billowing from the bright red engine of the Hogwarts Express. She wished the train would take them anywhere but London. She knew, once the train pulled into Kings Cross Station, her Mum and Dad would be waiting there for she and her brothers and those awful Muggles would be waiting for Harry. She feared it would be more than she would be able to bear.

Ron and Hermione, who had been sharing a carriage with them, got out first. Harry took Ginny’s hand and helped her down the step. She ignored the sneering looks from the people exiting the carriage behind them.

Draco Malfoy emerged, followed by the very clingy Pansy Parkinson and his two toadies, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. Draco gave Ginny, Harry, Ron and Hermione a smug look, shook Pansy off of his arm and gestured for the thuggish Crabbe and Goyle to follow him to the train. Ginny noticed the identical looks of loathing that Harry, Ron and Hermione were giving him – she figured the same look was on her own face. They were never able to prove that Draco and his father were behind the Dementor attacks of the previous year, but Ginny would have bet all the gold in Gringott’s that the Malfoys were the culprits.

“Give me a reason to hex him into oblivion,” said Harry as they all watched Draco and company strut onto the train.

“You don’t even need to give me a reason,” said Ron, his hand patting the pocket in his robes where his wand was concealed.

*****

They all found a compartment to themselves – far away from Draco and his devotees – and settled down just as the whistle blew, sounding the train’s departure from Hogsmeade station.

“Are your parents going to let you visit this summer?” Ron asked Hermione.

“I think so,” she answered. “We’re going on holiday to Switzerland for three weeks, but after that, I don’t see why they wouldn’t let me come to the Burrow.”

“Three weeks?” griped Ron. “In Switzerland? What are you going to do there for three whole weeks? Strap wood planks to your feet and slide down the side of a mountain with all the other insane Muggles?”

“Actually, I’m hoping to write a comprehensive essay for Defense Against the Dark Arts while I’m there – strictly extra credit, mind you – the Swiss Alps are loaded with trolls. It shouldn’t be too difficult – given my first-hand experience with them and all …” She winked at both Ron and Harry. “After that, I suppose I could squeeze in some time on the slopes.” Ginny thought she sounded far too cheerful at the prospect of jumping right into an essay – one that wasn’t even required – while she was supposed to be on holiday.

“Tell me you’re joking,” said Ron.

“You know she’s not,” said Harry in an undertone, chuckling.

“Of course I’m not joking!” said Hermione, looking slightly hurt.

“Well, what about you, Harry?” asked Ron. “Are you going to be able to skive off the Muggles this summer or do we have to come and snatch you again?”

Harry shrugged his shoulders. “I have to wait for the go-ahead from Dumbledore – I don’t care what the Dursleys have to say about it. As soon as I get Dumbledore’s consent, I’m as good as there.”

“But, that could take a month – or longer,” sighed Ginny.

“Dumbledore has his reasons for wanting Harry there,” said Hermione. Ginny knew Hermione was saying this to restate how imperative it was to follow the headmaster’s instructions, but it didn’t make her feel any better. “Let’s make a pact,” added Hermione, apparently noticing Ginny’s sullen face. She turned to Harry. “We’ll both try to get to the Burrow by your birthday – if Dumbledore will allow it.”

“It’s a deal,” said Harry.

Ginny thought to herself that July would be the longest month of the year.

*****

The Hogwarts Express came to a screeching stop at Platform 9 ¾ and Ginny peered out of the window of the compartment. A few feet away, she saw her mother and father, looking expectantly at the train and waiting for four of their children to disembark.

Ron and Hermione left the compartment, but Ginny stayed in her seat as Harry moved towards the door. He looked at her inquisitively. She felt like she had become glued to the seat. “I don’t want to go yet,” she said in answer to his questioning look. “I’m not ready yet.”

Harry knelt beside her seat and whispered, “It’s only a month. I’ll owl you everyday. Hedwig’ll be able to fly to Ottery St. Catchpole blindfolded by the time I get through with her.” He winked at her playfully.

“I’d owl you everyday, but I don’t think Errol would survive it,” she said, trying to muster up a smile.

“Just send replies with Hedwig, then,” said Harry. “And before you know it, it’ll be July 31 and I’ll get the best birthday present I could ever hope for.”

“And what’s that?” said Ginny.

“You,” said Harry. He kissed her softly and held out his hand. “C’mon … your Mum and Dad are waiting.”

*****

Harry and Ginny joined Ron, Hermione, Fred and George on the platform. They had already found Mr. and Mrs. Weasely and looked at Harry and Ginny curiously as they met them.

“What kept you?” said Fred with a devious grin.

Ginny ignored him and hugged her mother, then her father.

“It’s good to see you, my darling daughter,” said Arthur, squeezing his her tightly. “You gave us quite a fright earlier this school year. I’m so glad we’ll have you for two entire months – with all that’s going on, it’ll give me a good feeling have you home again.”

“I couldn’t agree more,” said Molly, fussing over Ginny’s robes and hugging her again once Arthur had let her go. “Harry, dear,” she said, once she’d finally released Ginny. “I saw your aunt and uncle on the other side of the barrier as we were coming in here – I was hoping they wouldn’t show, so we could take you home with us. You know you’re welcome there any time you like – just say the word.”

“Thanks,” said Harry, turning slightly red. “I hope to be able to visit soon.”

“The sooner the better,” said Arthur, clapping Harry on the shoulder.

*****

The six Weasleys and Harry made their way through the magical barrier and back into the Muggle section of Kings Cross Station.

Ginny held tight to Harry’s hand as she saw his bony Aunt Petunia and podgy Uncle Vernon standing, arms crossed, near Platform 10.

Vernon Dursley looked at Ginny as if she were a stinkbug. He turned to his wife and said in a sarcastic voice, loud enough for all of them to hear, “Now the boy’s got a freak for a girlfriend, Petunia. Isn’t that the sweetest thing you’ve ever seen? Just like his father.” His face reflected pure revulsion.

Ginny wasn’t sure who to try and hold back – Harry, Arthur, Ron, Fred and George were all looking reading to charge at Vernon like a herd of mad hippogriffs.

“Let it go, Arthur,” hissed Molly Weasley, though she was shooting loathsome looks in Petunia Dursley’s direction. “Not here!”

Vernon Dursley looked absolutely thrilled to have gotten such a tremendous reaction from the lot of them.

Harry turned to Ginny, as Hermione and Molly attempted to move the male Weasleys out of the proximity of the Dursleys.

“It’s only a month,” he whispered to her, with a shakiness in his voice that made it evident he was trying to ease his own mind, as well as hers. And much to the disgust of his aunt and uncle, he kissed her goodbye.

Author’s Note: The chapter title comes from the Michelle Branch song of the same name. The term “toady” is nabbed from one of my favorite holiday films of all time, A Christmas Story.

Prior to dinner that very day, Hedwig arrived at the Burrow, making her presence known by softly tapping at the kitchen window.<br><br>“Time to eat,” Molly Weasley announced, setting a platter onto the table.<br><br>Ginny ignored her and walked over to the window to let the owl in. Fred and George were sitting on the stairs, looking at a catalog and whispering intently.<br><br>“Time to eat!” said Molly, in a louder, more aggravated-sounding voice. Ron bounded down the staircase, but stopped short to peer over the twins’ shoulder at the catalog.<br><br>“TIME TO EAT!” Molly called out for the third time to the members of the Weasley household as Ginny retrieved the letter from Hedwig’s outstretched leg. Ginny wished she could find a quiet nook where she could read the letter, but the impatient glare her mother was shooting her, combined with the way she was tapping her spatula irritably on the table told her she’d better tuck the note away for the time being.<br><br>“Sorry, Mum,” said Ginny, taking her seat at the table.<br><br>Ron skipped past the twins and took a seat next to her. He spotted Hedwig straight away. “Heard back from Harry already? He’s certainly on top of things.”<br><br>The twins sniggered as they sat down at the dinner table and Ginny shot them a look that said, “stuff it.” She looked back at Ron and said, “Our owls probably crossed in delivery.”<br><br>“You mean <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>my</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> owl, don’t you?” said Percy airily as he sat down with the rest of the family. “Sorry I’m late to dinner, Mum,” he added, turning to Molly. “I was just tacking on a few addendums to a report …”<br><br>George gave an exaggerated yawn. Molly shot a look of warning at him. “It’s all right, dear,” she said to Percy.<br><br>“Where’s … Dad?” asked Ron as he began to shovel in a mouthful of ham.<br><br>“Don’t talk with your mouth full, Ron,” said Molly. “Your father’s going to be late again tonight, I’m afraid … there’s loads to do at the Ministry these days.”<br><br>“Don’t I know,” sighed Percy. “I’ll probably be caught up at work for the next couple of days myself, what with these reports due and …”<br><br>“So, Ginny,” said Fred, interrupting. “What’s in that letter you concealed in your pocket, eh?” He was smiling devilishly at her.<br><br>“None of your business,” said Ginny curtly, stabbing at her sprouts fiercely with her fork.<br><br>“Ahhhh, young love,” said George mischievously. “Has Harry composed you a sonnet, perhaps?”<br><br>Ron let out a little snort, spraying a shower of sprouts onto his plate.<br><br>“Enough, you two,” said Molly.<br><br>The twins couldn’t stop, though. Even with their mother’s warning and admonishing looks.<br><br>“Now, George,” said Fred in mock seriousness. “You know Harry isn’t a poet – but our Ginny is, aren’t you?” <br><br>Ginny felt her head start to throb. She was trying very hard to maintain her cool, but if her brothers took one more dig …<br><br>George’s face beamed. “Ah, yes …” He cleared his throat and began to recite in a dignified voice, “<!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad …</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->” <br><br>Ron was practically choking on his sprouts. Percy was shaking his head. Molly was getting out of her chair and heading towards the twins, who were doubled over in laughter. And Ginny felt like steam could come shooting from her ears at any given moment – like she had just taken a double-dose of Pepper-Up Potion – but she hadn’t. She had just gotten a double-dose of the comedic duo also known as her twin brothers. And she had had enough. <br><br><!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>I’m not going to snap, </em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> she thought, squelching the urge to turn them both into hyenas. <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>I’ll let Mum deal with them</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->. She set her fork down and said, “If you don’t mind, I’m excusing myself.”<br><br>Ginny hurried up the steps to her bedroom and slammed the door tightly behind her when she reached it.<br><br><!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>I’m not going to let them get to me. They’re maddening, no doubt, but it’s their way. Maybe a bout with Mum’ll fend them off.</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> She smiled at the thought of the two Hogwarts graduates, being reprimanded by their Mummy. <br><br>She stretched out on her bed, with Harry’s parchment in hand and beamed at it. She couldn’t stay mad at Fred or George – not when she had the prospect of reading Harry’s letter. She unrolled the parchment and stared at the words. She observed the curvature of his handwriting and color of the ink he had chosen. Then she read his words.<br><br><br><!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>Dear Ginny,<br><br>Hello! I sure wish I were at the Burrow with you and your family. Life on Privet Drive is less than exhilarating; let me tell you. After a few hours of watching my cousin pig out and hearing him go on about the million and one things my aunt and uncle have yet to buy for him, I’ve just about had enough. I can’t wait until my birthday. I think it’s the first time in my life I’ve ever been anxious about my birthday, to be honest. Usually I could care less. But this year I have something to look forward to, don’t I? I can hardly wait to see you again. I miss you.<br><br>Love, Harry</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--><br><br>So maybe it <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>wasn’t</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> poetry, but as Ginny looked at the last two words scribbled on the parchment, her heart beat a little faster. <br> <p><!--EZCODE CENTER START--><div style="text-align:center"><!--EZCODE IMAGE START--><img src="http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/image ... <!--EZCODE IMAGE END--></div><!--EZCODE CENTER END--></p><i></i>

Chapter Four – <!--EZCODE BOLD START--><strong>Homework</strong><!--EZCODE BOLD END--><br><br><!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>Avoiding Mum is getting to be a little thorny at times</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->, thought Ginny as she stole up the flight of steps to keep away from the next barrage of chore assignments from her mother. <br><br>“How come Ron never gets stuck with charming the wrinkles out of Dad’s work robes?” she asked herself as she closed her bedroom door quietly.<br><br>It was already midway through July and Ginny had figured she’d better get cracking on some of her summer homework assignments. She took a fleeting glance out the window of her bedroom, in hopes of seeing Hedwig’s snowy-white form gliding in to land on her sill, but the sky was clear. With no likelihood of being distracted by owl post, Ginny reluctantly opened her Charms textbook and leafed through the pages. She figured on Professor Flitwick’s holiday tasks being the simplest to tackle. She didn’t want to think about Professor Binns’ grueling History of Magic essay, nor the unbelievably complex assignment Professor Snape had slapped on the rising fifth year students.<br><br>“Well, isn’t this terrific?” she said out loud. “I can’t do this assignment without a partner.” She closed the Charms book and unenthusiastically picked up her History of Magic text. She read over the assignment Professor Binns had given – to write a three-foot long essay on the anarchy of dwarves under the regime of a Muggle called Franco in Spain in the 1930’s. Ginny made a face as she dipped her quill in ink and began to write on her parchment, in fairly large script, “The Lawlessness of the Dwarves of Spain Under the Rule of General Franco.” She figured Binns would be impressed with a lengthy title. But, beyond the title, she was stumped. She hadn’t a clue what caused the Spanish dwarves to rebel and, quite frankly, she didn’t care.<br><br>She looked over at her bureau, where a tatty old stuffed toy sat – a black cat with jade-colored eyes that she’d had ever since she could remember. <br><br>“I think I’d rather be charming the wrinkles out of Dad’s work robes,” she said to the toy cat. “What do you think, Mr. Pickles?”<br><br> The stuffed animal stared at her through its unanimated glass eyes. <br><br>“Exactly what I thought,” Ginny answered. “I’ve gone batty, talking to inanimate objects.”<br><br>A familiar noise interrupted her one-sided conversation with Mr. Pickles. <br><br><!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>Tap, tap, tap. </em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--><br><br>“Oh, salvation!” Ginny cried as she heard the recognizable patter at the windowpane. Hedwig sat perched on the windowsill, looking quite dignified as she waited to be let in. <br><br> “You’ve temporarily saved me from the impending doom of homework,” she told the owl as she invited her in. Ginny grinned at her as she fed her an owl treat as reward for delivering the letter – she was thinking how she’d just made a step up by going from a chat with a <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>toy</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->animal to a <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>real</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> one. <br><br>As Hedwig nipped at the treat with her beak, Ginny unhitched the letter from her leg and unrolled it.<br><br><!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>Dear Ginny,<br><br>Great news! I’ve just got an owl from school – Dumbledore has given me permission to leave Privet Drive the last week of July. That means – as long as it’s okay with your parents – I can be at your house in a week! Isn’t that the best news? I can’t wait to be out of this house. You’re so lucky to be with people everyday who don’t squirm at the mere sight of you. I wish it were next week already. I still miss you.<br><br>Love, Harry </em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--><br><br>Only a week! Ginny grinned happily as she pictured Harry crossing the threshold of her house – his black hair tousled as always, his brilliant green eyes beaming at her from behind his round eyeglasses, his arms outstretched to greet her … <br><br>And of course it would be okay with her parents for him to come in a week – they would have had him all summer if it’d been allowed. All she needed to do was tell them and her Mum’d be instantly bustling about, making preparations for his arrival.<br><br>Ginny sighed again as she read the words Harry wrote – <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>You’re so lucky to be with people everyday who don’t squirm at the mere sight of you</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->. At the sight of him, <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>she</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> felt positively elated. She couldn’t imagine anyone squirming or cringing away from a person who made <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>her</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> feel so wonderful. And, as irritating as all of her brothers could be, she knew she was very lucky indeed, to have a family as fantastic as they all were – even Fred and George. <br><br>She rolled up the parchment and headed downstairs, fully prepared to announce that a guest would soon be arriving at the Burrow.<br> <p><!--EZCODE CENTER START--><div style="text-align:center"><!--EZCODE IMAGE START--><img src="http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/image ... <!--EZCODE IMAGE END--></div><!--EZCODE CENTER END--></p><i>Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub129.ezboard.com/bmajiklmoonsr ... boo1974</A>  <IMG HEIGHT=10 WIDTH=10 SRC="http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/shield_05[1].jpg" BORDER=0> at: 12/19/02 5:24:47 pm<br></i>
