This is i believe my first fic. Total dreamer
Title - The One We Want
Author: Roselle aka Ti88 aka Ti
Rating: TEEN - watch the show you can read this
Summary: Different ending to The End of the World. Liz never struck me as the type to just go along with anything. She is more rational than Max. I think she would have picked up on the difference between Tess having to stay in Roswell and Max having to get with Tess. That and I think she would take matters into her own hands to ensure this and not leave it up to chance.
Spoilers: Up to The End of The World
Disclaimer: I own nothing. Roswell belongs to WB and the writers, producers and all those people. I get no money from this, just a warm fuzzy feeling and a clear head from getting the stuff that’s floating around out of there.
(My story picks up right after Max finishes telling Liz that she has to get him to fall out of love with him in order to save the world.)

“Max! Max, listen to me…it doesn’t have to be this way! Max we don’t have to never get together.” Liz was pleading with the future Max, the Max who had come back to tell her, that because of their love everyone they loved had died and the war had been lost. He had come back to tell her that she had to make his now and past self fall out of love with her.
Max half turned. “Liz.” He said her name like it was a prayer, or a plea, or salvation…maybe it was all three. “Liz, it has to be.” He looked into the face of the woman he loved. The woman he had given it all to and up for. The woman he had saved; but who also had saved him time and time again, from himself and from the memories. “Liz we don’t have a choice. It’s our love that makes Tess leave. And because she leaves she isn’t here to fight the war and everything we hold dear is lost…It can’t be any other way.” He paused, looking away from her as he gathered his courage, knowing that if he looked into her eyes it would be all over. He’d say screw it - responsibility, destiny - screw it all. But it was a future Liz who had asked him to do this, she had agreed, and then insisted that it had to be done. “Liz…Liz you have to make me fall out of love with you. We have to change the future. We have to right things.”
“No Max.”
“How can you say no?! I held Michael in my arms as he died. You watched Maria and Alex commit suicide rather then give us up.” There was a long pause after his outburst. Liz could feel the anger and hurt not at or with her, but the situation and the unfairness of it, coming off him in waves. “We have to.”
“NO Max. You and Me, we are meant to be. You said it in the cave, you said it after, and you mean it now, even though you won’t say it. Tess doesn’t leave because of our love, she leaves because she has no love.” Liz watches Max to see how he takes this. He had turned around partway through her speech. She walks over to him and touches him. “That’s why. She leaves because she isn’t part of us. She doesn’t have a place. She believes I hate her. Alex doesn’t like her because she’s hurt me. Isabel doesn’t like her because she hurt you. Michael doesn’t like her because she hurt you. And Kyle doesn’t like her, because she took over his room, and he feels she is stealing his dad away. No one likes her because of this whole destiny stuff. It becomes too much and she leaves.”
The whole time Liz was speaking, Max’s mind was trying to keep up with and process all that Liz was saying. Now that she’s finished, the room is quiet once again. Max looks up and meets Liz’s eyes. “How do we make her stay? How do we give her love? And what if this doesn’t work? What if…”
“Max! Max, we get her to stay, the same way we got you guys to stay. We give her love. By being her friend. You already are her friend. So is Valenti and Kyle-" seeing, Max’s skeptical look"- he has a girl living in his house, sleeping in his bed; trust me he’s her friend, a reluctant one, but still her friend. (Max smiled at this) Michael has a kindred soul in her as he has one in Maria. I’ll bury the hatchet and start to be her friend - Alex and Maria will follow. Iz will come around too.” She paused, not wanting to answer his last question. “If it doesn’t work - then I’ll send you back again and we’ll try something else, or I’ll come back or Michael or Iz…But if we keep with the ‘What if’s’, then nothings ever going to be solved and no one will ever get a chance for happiness.” She stopped, seeing he hadn’t moved, but was just starring at her and she snapped.
“You want more ‘what if’s’ Max!?! Here goes - What if you guys never came? What if Michael never made it back to you and Iz? What if you never saved me? What if Maria didn’t agree to keep the secret? What if Alex decided we were all into drugs? What if he never agreed to give his blood? What if Michael left? What if Valenti decided not to help us? What if we never fell in love? What if…”
“Stop it Liz! Don’t ever say that!” Max yelled harshly and hoarsely to Liz as he grabs her arms. “Don’t ever say that - Don’t ever say what if we never fell in love! Don’t ever say what if we never fell in love! I have been in love with you since I saw you! Had you died that day, I would have died too.” By this time he was in her arms whispering the last part in her hair. Taking of couple of deep breaths he tries to speak. “Ok Liz. I get it now. NO more ‘what if’s’. Then he laughs.
“What’s so funny Max?”
“I sometimes forget that my quiet sweet Lizzy is very much in charge and very stubborn. Ok. We’ll do this. We’ll give Tess love.”
“Good. It’s good to know, you know who’s in charge.” She smiles. “Now that that’s taken care of, how do we go about getting you back to wherever, whenever…”
“You don’t. I can’t”
“What…What does that mean Max?!”
Taking another deep breath and leading her over to the chairs, sits down and begins explaining. “I stay here till something changes, altering the future and then I disappear. As long as I’m here then the future hasn’t changed.”
“So we change it and then you go back…”
“No! No, I cease to exist once its change. A new future will be set into motion. My timeline will be forever altered.”
“But, but what about us?”
“There will always be an US, Liz…you said as much yourself. Things will just change - for the better I hope, but Max will always love Liz. I don’t want to go back to the time where there is death anyway…There is no guarantee that you are still there. They were attacking us just before I left.”
“And Liz will always love Max.” Liz leans in and gives Max a soft kiss. A kiss of promise: for themselves, their loved ones, and the future. Max breaks the kiss and looking Liz in the eyes “Let’s go and make the future we want- not the one that was told to us, or the one I’ve come from - but the one we want, the one that is ours.”
The End
