Title: Irreversible
Rating: TEEN
Category: I’ll call it CC but I’m not really focusing on the couples.
Disclaimer: I’m writing purely for entertainment. I don’t own anything. Please don’t sue.
Summary: I stole the idea for this fic from the movies, Memento and Irreversible. This starts right before Graduation when Liz is getting flashes of their deaths. Then we work backwards from there. We learn that things aren’t what they seemed. I’ll be using some dialogue from the show throughout my story (in italics) to weave what we know with what we don’t know.
Part 1
In the shadows outside of the Crashdown, a man stands looking up at Liz’s balcony. He thinks ruefully about the irreversible chain of events he set off the last time he was here. The cascade of inevitable “one thing leads to another” that brought them to this point, this point where the only people he ever cared about were going to be murdered. Well, not if he can help it. He cannot see the couple inside, but he knows they are in there. He knows what they are doing, what they are always doing. Geez, he didn’t mean to encourage more making out. But he knows he needs to give them what they expect; they need more information. He hopes this will be enough because there is no time to create more flashes.
He bows his head while waiting for the proper moment. “Take care my former King,” he prays silently. “Make a new destiny, here, on Earth.” He shakes his head sadly thinking that even if his plan works, their lives will not be easy. They will probably always be on the run, and they will have to do it without his help. He has already been summoned to his new duty. He hates it. He briefly contemplates again the possibility of turning himself in to the FBI to draw attention away from the pod squad and prolong his stay on this beautiful planet. But he knows it will not work. His capture will likely only fuel the return of the alien fanatics in the government and make everyone’s lives even more difficult.
Inside on Liz’s bed, Max and Liz mumble to each other in between kisses.
“Tough job,” Liz mumbles with a smile.
“Yeah, somebody's gotta do it,” Max returns.
“So what's happening to me, Max? I mean, what does this mean? Am I becoming one of you?”
“I don't know, but whatever is happening, we're together now.”
Outside, the man suddenly stiffens as if sensing a presence we cannot see.
“Time’s up,” he says to himself. Then, he shuts his eyes as if in meditation.
Inside, Liz suddenly has flashes of being killed. This time she also clearly sees a man at a podium, speaking.
“Did you see something?” Max questions, sensing her reaction to the visions.
“I saw you get killed again,” Liz answers. “Oh wait, wait a second. There was someone there. I've seen him before.”
“Who was it?” Max prods.
Liz gets up and goes to her dresser searching for a book.
“That face!” Liz exclaims, trying to jog her memory. “I know I've seen that face before. Where is that?”
She searches through her things and finally picks up a book, pointing excitedly. “This is him! He was there the moment that you got, the moment that you got killed. I mean, he was giving a speech or something.”
Liz walks back over to Max. She brings the book back over to show him the author's picture.
“Bryce McCain?” Max asks, immediately recognizing him. “He's going to be the guest of honor at the UFO convention,” he informs Liz.
As an employee of the UFO center, Max knows all the details of the UFO convention. He looks at Liz somberly, “We die June 12th.”
“That's less than two weeks,” Liz whispers disbelievingly. She had hoped they would have more time.
Max nods, “We have twelve days to figure out how to stop it.”
The man outside opens his right hand and smiles at the lone white candy mint in his hand. He tosses it in the air and catches it in his mouth and then, he is gone as mysteriously as he came. But if he had heard the misinterpretation of the flash he had projected, he would have muttered, “Shit!”
