As promised, I am reviving some of the poetry exercises I posted on our old beloved board (before ezboard killed it):

All poets feel free to join in the fun; stretch your poetry skills to the limit.

Exercise #1 Cinquains:

(originally posted 6/28/05)

ok poets! i've been learning a little about poetry lately and have found out about this format which i find intriguing.

it is called a cinquain . . it is a simple poem like a haiku.

it has 5 lines with the pattern 2, 4, 6, 8, 2.
this means 2 syllables in the first line, 4 in the second, etc.
finally, usually you try to link the first and last lines together.

you can write a cinquain in this format with more than one stanza. in that case you would try to link the first and last lines of each stanza and the last line of each stanza with the first of the next. make any sense?

i wanted to post a few examples of my own . . they are single stanza poems.

both are untitled.

Don't know
Wondering how
I can write for others
And still find words to express my
True self

(link = don't know . . true self.)

----------------

watching

handfuls of sand

roll off of fingertips

discover the world again through

my son

(link - watching . . my son)

get it?

i thought if anybody wanted to have fun, they could try to write a cinquain and add it to this thread.

or if you just want to comment about the format/poems, that's fine too. thanks! :)

These kids

Enough crazy

fighting and bickering

Put those toys away now you two

Tired

Bedtime

Off with you both

my tiny combatants

Tucked in and sweetly kissed

Ah peace
