Chapter One, Part One
I flicked my dark curls sharply out of my face. I was getting seriously annoyed. Once again, possibly the fourth time in a week, Bert had given me clients I could do nothing with.
First I had a young man called Simon Coone desperate for me to make him a vampire, why on earth he had chosen to come to the vampire executioner for help with this problem still eludes me. I maybe wouldn't have minded so much if he weren't so violent. He was the last person I needed gaining super undead powers.
Second, an older man called Gary Devons wanted me to convince his lycanthrope son to stop being a werewolf, I told him that short of killing his son he was out of options. Apparently that was something he didn't want to hear. He threatened to sue me...
Third, a woman, Sally Rubin, wanted me to file a missing persons report, one that had absolutely nothing preternatural about it.
Now, I had a man and a woman, the man a vampire named Christophe and the woman his human servant and lover Mariette. Christophe wore a permanent frown, his thick dark eyebrows furrowing deeply. I wanted to warn him about the danger of frown lines but he seemed well past saving. Every now and again a lock of cocoa brown hair fell into his face, hiding his scowly expression. He was a relatively new vampire, hadn’t yet seen half a century but he acted as though he was Master of the City. Mariette was resting her delicate elbows on my desk and held her fair head in her hands. Her emerald green eyes, so amazing I was sure they were contacts, were shiny with tears and pleading at me. They wanted children desperately and told me they were having problems conceiving. Well, yes he is a manky old corpse. That could have something to do with it.
"But there must be something?" Mariette made it a question.
I rubbed the back of my neck and made a plosive non-committal noise.
"Anything at all?"
"I’m sorry, there really is nothing I can suggest. I’ve only known a few cases where vampires have been able to conceive; as I told you the babies were born with terrible defects or didn’t survive. Vlad Syndrome is your biggest threat if you even manage to conceive." I explained for roughly the fifth time. I was officially out of things to say.
"Please Ms. Blake," she continued. Her statement, her plea, could have meant anything. Again I made a non-committal noise and threw up my hands.
"I don’t know what else to say. This isn’t something I can deal with." I half considered offering to call Monica and see if she could help, but I decided I didn’t really want to be going to her for favors, I no longer considered our friendship very special and besides it might just offend her now that Robert was dead. I could see her start another plea and stood so to end the meeting. She too stood but carried on talking regardless. Christophe glared at me and didn’t budge.
"I know our problem is quite rare," she began. "but surely there is something you can do to help us? You’re the vampire expert, you know the Master of the City, I saw you and him on the news. Maybe he could help us?" A new light of hope flickered in her viridescent eyes. I sighed heavily.
"I’m very sorry Miss, but I don’t think he will be of much use. He has a lot of business to run and I doubt he’ll find the time." My tone had gone from sympathetic to quite forceful and no-nonsense. I shifted across to the door and held it open. Mariette let her tears fall and stood beside the still seated Christophe. I was beginning to dislike this vampire very much. Well, I say beginning, I hadn’t liked him much from the moment he stalked through the door and whirled himself into one of the chairs at my desk. They didn’t seem to be taking the hint. I struggled to resist grabbing them by the scruff of the neck and hurling them out of my door.
"I have other clients to see to," Lie. They were my last. "I wish you both the best of luck." Not only did I manage not to forcibly remove them from the small room but I was also extremely civil. Two brownie points for me.
"You have resolved none of our problems Miss Blake." Stated Christophe, speaking for the first time in a smooth voice that held nothing on Jean-Claude’s voice of electric velvet.
"It’s Ms. Blake, and you know it. I’ve done all I can. If you insist on seeking help from somebody who doesn’t have a clue this is about as far as you’re going to get." It seemed like perfectly good logic to me. I motioned towards the door, hoping this time it would be blatant enough for them to get the message. Christophe appeared in my face.
"You don’t want me as your enemy Miss Blake." He said in a tone of warning. Some nerve. Oh, but there’s more. "You have no idea of what I can really do, the powers I hold, the ease in which I could destroy you and-" he stopped suddenly, looking confused. He’d finally noticed that I was staring him straight in the eye. "How are you able to meet my gaze?" he asked uneasily.
"Maybe you should’ve done your homework a little more thoroughly Christophe." I held out my hand for him to shake. "Anita Blake. AKA, The Executioner. Friendly Neighborhood Animator and Vampire Hunter." I spoke in my best business voice and smiled sweetly. He nervously took my hand. I felt a small rush of power, pathetic compared to most other vampires I’d come into contact with. His face seemed to have paled, if that’s possible for a creature of the night. He suddenly turned back into his stern, ego-filled self and sneered at me. I took one small step forwards. If I were a bit taller we would be just about nose to nose.
"You don’t want me as your enemy Christophe." I smiled deviously as I began to feed his words back to him. "You have no idea of what I can really do, the powers I hold, the ease in which I could destroy you." It was one of my better moments. Again I stepped back against the door and showed them the way out. Christophe snorted at me looking utterly repulsed. I raised my eyebrows feeling proud of myself and he flounced out of the room, Mariette scurried along close behind him still in tears. I slammed the door after them. Childish I know, but it felt good. I knew a certain big boss-man who was about to get a very angry visit.
"Bert!" I shouted abruptly, storming into his office unannounced.
"Anita. I'm on my way home. Whatever it is it will have to wait." he didn't even look me in the eye. I could he knew exactly why I was there.
"No Bert. Now. Right now." I moved a little to the left, thereby effectively blocking his way out of the building.
"Anita, I'm tired. I did a lot of business today. Business that will be paying your salary."
"Business that will be lining your pockets. And paying excessively for them too I might add." I gave him the evil eye, waiting for him to try to respond. As soon as he opened his mouth I interrupted not really wanting to hear his comeback. "You have got to stop sending me clients I can't help. There's no point! You're wasting my time; I'm just going to start turning them away if you keep doing it."
"There was nothing wrong with the clients you had today. Two in regards to vampirism, something you're an absolute expert at and one about a werewolf. What could possibly be wrong with that?"
"Bert, unless somebody wants me to raise a few zombies keep them the hell away from my office. I don't want to see anymore clients that you think I'll be able to help got it?"
He smiled. "I can't turn away a paying client Anita."
"You are unbelievable."
"I know." he smiled broadly again. I knew this was just one of those arguments I just wouldn't win. I never really do against Bert. Still, can't hurt to try once in a while. I decided to leave before I lost further ground to him.
"Stick with the people who an animator ok?" I turned to leave and got a shock as I got a message on my beeper. I yelped in shock and heard Bert laughing behind me. Sighing I checked the number. It was Dolph. Great. Literally as soon as I get off work somebody finds some more for me to do. I gave Bert a sour look and went to find the nearest phone hoping beyond hope it wasn't going to be another gruesome body ripped to shreds. There couldn't be another one so soon. Ah, who was I kidding.
