Part 1: Amy and Dodge Ball
"NO Click No Click And no!"
"Mrs. D., that's the last box, do you want anything else?"
Amy looked up from the computer. "NO. You can go home now. The pie is on the shelf. Tell
your mom hi and thanks again Neil."
Anytime Mrs. D." He waved and left.
"Hmmm, lets try a different site. No Click May...NO. NO WAY I DON'T EVEN WANT TO
KNOW." Amy sighed and clicked from item to item. All she wanted was something to accent the store for V-Day. She had a whole theme going on. "That's it. I'm going to have...
Click. What's this? Yes., oh yes the fun I could have with this. You think you
know all there is all to know about the Roswell crash of '47, aliens, and UFO's? Then
add this to your collection - The True Believer's Guide to Hot Alien Sex.
Amy made the purchase and closed the shop. It would get here just in time and it would
complete the whole 'Alien & Love' theme she had going for the holiday. She shook her head.
Her way of living maybe kooky to some, but it was honest, paid the bills, and kept her and
Maria in a home and car. In Roswell, New Mexico, they were not too many things to do that
did not relate to the Crash. There were also not many creative things for a single mom to
do, that interested Amy. That left getting on the alien-themed band wagon. A band wagon the whole family was a part of.
"I can't believe this is our punishment for that last stunt we pulled of ditching school." Isabel was not happy.
"It could have been worse. Our parents could have been called and we could be have been here on Saturday, Valentine's Day, instead of Friday."
"But Alex, teaching Dodge Ball to 6th graders, isn't on my list of things to do. I don't even like dodge ball. Why would you recruit me for this?"
Alex looked at Isabel Evans. She looked every bit the princess she tried everyday to deny. "Well, Ms. Evans, this is a new type of dodge ball I am showing the kiddies and I need your help in explaining it to them. It's called Dungeon Dodge."
"Wait. Didn't we play that in 6th grade?"
"Yes, we did. But, they stopped playing it after our class for some reason."
"Yeah I remember. That's how you became the self proclaimed King of Dodge Ball. And the reason they stopped was because the whole gym was totaled after you gave yourself the title. You kicked the butts of the 7th and 8th graders who had challenged the 5th and 6th graders."
"Yep. They couldn't take being taken down and thrown in the dungeon by little 'ol me. So the school stopped teaching the class."
"Well Alex if that is the case are you sure its safe to teach it now?" Isabel did not need to get in any more trouble. She had to save all her really good excuses for alien themed problems.
"I talked it over with the gym teachers and they feel its OK. The game can only be played in gym. No rematches or the like." By this time they had everything set up and the classes had come in. "Hello everybody. The lovely Miss Evans will explain the rules to Dungeon Dodge. Please follow all the rules to the T. Miss Evans does not take kindly to straying from the rules she sets down."
Isabel was going to love this. This was not a bad way to serve the detention they all got. She got to do something she loved. Giving orders and organizing. "First rule. Listen and do as I tell you when I tell you. And we will be fine. Second Rule Line up along the base line." She waited for them to move and then began given out the rest of the rules. Third rule. Count off 1,2,1,2,1,2...you get the picture. Third rule Team 1 on that side. Team 2 on that side. Now for the rules of play. I'll flip a coin. Heads Team 1 gets control of ball. Tails Team 2 gets control of the ball. Now if you look around you notice there is two feet of space between the wall and a line behind each team. That is the dungeon. If you are hit with a ball from the opposite team, you have to run to their dungeon. If you throw a ball and its caught by the opposite team you have to run to their dungeon. The only way to get out is by catching a ball thrown into the dungeon by one of your teams. Winning. The first team to get all their opponents people into their dungeon wins. If times runs out first the team with the most people in their dungeon wins. Any question? Good. Play Ball."
Alex looked at her. "What? I've always wanted to say that."
Part 2: Green with envy
"Maria! Order up!" Ding "Liz! Order up!" Ding Agnes! Order up!"
"Thanks Michael."
"Spaceboy."
DING DING "Agnes!! Order up!!" Michael looked around. MR. Parker had a soft heart. Agnes got paid, but was never around. And when she was she never worked. Then again, this and the UFO museum were the only two places that allowed their staff to take off a moments notice. No questions asked. So he really couldn't complain.
"Michael I think Agnes went on another break. I'll take it out."
"Thanks Liz."
Maria came up. "Table number six says these 'Saturn Rings' are cold. Can you...?" Michael sneaked a peak and waved his hand. "Thanks."
LIz came back and watched her go off again. She decided now was time to corner Michael. Max hadn't told her a thing. And she didn't want her best friend spending another holiday wishing her boyfriend had more Max qualities to him. "So Michael, do you have any plans for Maria and Valentine's Day?"
Michael rolled his eyes. He knew it was coming. Isabel, Max, Alex, Tess, and even Kyle had stopped him in the past week wanting to know if this was going to be a shampoo or bumper holiday. You would think they never made a mistake. He told them the same thing he was going to tell Liz. "I got it covered."
"Got what covered?" Maria choose that moment to wander back over.
"Nothing."
"Nothing."
"Oh no. Two nothings. One form my best friend. And one from my boy friend. That cannot be good. So spill."
Michael gave Liz a look what you have done now look. "NO. Maria. It's a surprise and I am not..."
Maria jumped up and down. "Its about Valentine's Day isn't it? OK. I trust Liz to make sure you don't screw up." Maria sweeped out with her's, Liz's and Agnes' order.
"She expects me to make sure you don't screw up. Oh God help me."
Michael was really getting sick of this. "Hey. I have everything under control."
"Michael..."
"NO Liz I do." He smiled. Liz's mouth fell open. Michael almost never smiled. He smirked a lot. Almost as if he knew some great secret you didn't. "NO shampoo. No car parts. NO toothbrush. Or any other basic non-pampering, impersonal items." He stopped and looked at Liz. She sort of had this dazed look on her face.
"Liz couldn't believe it. Michael sounded like he knew what he was doing. "Wow. I'm impressed. So what did you get her?"
Now Michael smirked. "Not telling. As Maria's best friend and Maxwell's girlfriend, you would feel honor bound to confide in one of them." Liz started to protest. "Don't feel bad. I have the same problem with Max and Isabel.
"Coming." Amy opened the shop door to find the UPS man there. "Oh goody it made it." She thanked the man and took her package over the table. She was listening to the radio counting down Top 10 Worst Songs to play on Valentine's Day. So far she'd heard 'Mambo #5', 'Ooops, I did it again', 'My Happy Ending', and '4 Seasons on Loneliness' Amy opened the box and took out 100 copies of 'Hot Alien Sex'. Ninety were for the baskets and ten would go on the shelves. The baskets were pink and red and white on the outside. But when you opened them they turned green...and just not any green. Pea green. She went with that color since its an alien themed Valentine's Day. The costumers did not know until after. Each gift package from key chains to the supper deluxe with book in it, boosted of an alien themed surprised upon opening the box. So she figured they were fairly warmed. Besides anyone who got on of these gifts as a serious Valentine's Day gift for someone who wasn't an alien fanatic, needed help anyway. Her conscious was clean. Now to take the 101 copy of the book and see exactly what they thought of as Hot Alien Sex. As she was leaving the shop she heard the #1 song - 'I'm too Sexy by Right Said Fred.' And they had the nerve to play the whole thing. Just to prove how unlike a Valentine's Day song it was.
Part 3: Toilets and Pets
BANG BANG "Come on Tess. I really have to go."
Tess rolled her eyes. Kyle always has to go. I think he does it just to get on my nerves. She opened the door to find a hopping and dancing Kyle. "Its all yours."
"Thanks Tess. Why is it girls take forever?" Kyle asked as he ran in and closed the door. HE leaned against the door and snickered to himself. She always fell for it. Why he did it he didn't know. But if he timed it right, like he did now, she came out in only a towel. HE knew he would have to pay for it later, but she was great to look at. Since they were living in the same house, they were dancing around the whole date thing, but he figured as Valentines was a day away he would make his move then.
Gurggle Gurggle "What the heck it that?" Kyle looked over and inspected the toilet, where the noise seemed to be coming from. " Great its making noises now. Tess probably did it." It didn't matter who did it, cause the water was rising. He grabbed the pink...wait a minute. Since when is the plunger pink? Didn't matter. The toilet looked like it was going to blow. He took the ack pink plunger and attempted to unclog the toilet. Fifteen minutes later the water went down and then shot back up. Kyle heard something go plop behind him. Checking to see that the toilet was OK. He turned and look. On the ground was a goldfish. "I'm losing my mind." And it was a live one at that. He got a cup, scooped it up in and went to show it to Tess. Maybe she could explain this one to him.
Amy put her key in the door. "Maria I'm home." No answer. She walked into the living, to find Maria on the couch crying. "Honey what's wrong?"
Maria turned tear stained eyes to her. "Rosie called. Remember the bunny her and I picked out to replace the other one?" Amy nodded. "Well, her mom called her at work and told her the bunny was dead. HE was supposed to be a baby. She didn't have him for 2 years. And its a week til her birthday. He was such a cute little black bunny. SO quiet and well behaved. They think he had a heart attack. They were going to get a double stroller for him and the cat. Now she can't do that.
"Oh baby. I'm sorry to hear that." Amy gave her a hug. "I know how much the bunny meant to you both. Do you guys want to go and pick out another one?"
Maria shook her head. "NO I asked her and right now, she doesn't want to get another pet. She just needs some time. And she feels a little guilty."
"Why?"
"Well when we first got the rabbit, she really missed the first one. She had him for 13/14 years and wasn't ready for another one. But she grew to love BJ and his skate boarding antics."
"Honey she doesn't have to feel guilty for that. Its natural."
"She knows. WE talked about it."
"Maria, sweetie. You make a really good friend."
"Thanks mom."
Part 4: It's Valentine's Day IN Roswell.
Max looked over the present he got for Liz. He hoped she liked it. Now all he had to do was wrap it. They were all meeting at the Crashdown for lunch and to exchange gifts. With everything that had happened, as much as they wanted to spend time together as couples, they also wanted to spend time together with each other.
"Diane listen."
His wife whirled on him. "NO Philip you listen. Its Valentine's Day. Our children are able to find time to spend it with everyone they loved - family, friends, and significant others. But you...you are going on a sudden business trip with your personal assistant. And as its Valentine's Day you don't think to book a ticket for ME!"
Isabel came up behind Max in the hall. They looked at each other. This could not be happening. Their parents did not fight. They never fought.
"What are you getting bent out of shape for? Its a trip. I have been on dozens before."
Diane looked like she wanted to throttle him. "Do you know what personal assistants are?!"
Philip just looked at her. "They are the Evil Bitch Monster of Death." Diane shouted.
Max and Isabel couldn't help it. They had heard that term only twice before and they started to snicker. Their dad looked up the stairs and glared at them. And started to snicker too. "I think they'll be OK. We have dates to collect."
Philip turned around and picked up the phone. "Hi Susan. I have a question for you. This trip we absolutely have to take today." He stopped taking as he listened. "What do you mean its June 14 and not Feb 14. But I thought...Well yes I know its Valentine's Day...And yes my wife was a little miffed. OK she was a lot miffed. Yes, Yes. She did mention something along those lines. No. NO. I'm happily married as well...What no no. I don't need to speak with your husband. Of course I remember no trips on any holidays. Yes. Yes. I just...Well I am the boss. That's right I should be enforcing the rules. You're gonna what? Why? I'm sure you and Diane have nothing to...Well as a matter of fact she just came in." Philip looked at his wife. "Here. Susan wants to talk to you and doesn't trust me to get the message right."
"Susan." And Diane started to laugh. She had a pretty good idea what Susan had said to Philip from his end of the phone, but to hear it again was too much. "Thanks and you have a happy Valentine's too. Sure Next Tuesday lunch sounds great." She hung up the phone and glared at her husband once. "I like her." Diane sailed past her two kids.
Alex met them on the corner. He lightly kissed Isabel hello and waved to Max. Then climbed in. Max pulled up and park in from of the Crashdown. They climbed out and walked inside. Everyone was there already. He walked up to Liz and gave her present. A giant heart shaped box of chocolates and a bouquet of flowers. She kissed him. "Thank you Max they are beautiful." He motioned for her to check the flowers. She pushed a couple of roses aside and saw a book. As she pulled it out, she realized it was a first edition copy of her favorite book of poetry. He remembered. "Oh, I love it. I absolutely love it."
Alex presented his gift to Isabel. It was a locket. On one side was a picture of all of them and her parents. On the other side was an inscription. 'From whence you came, for now you are and for where you go. Remember love will find you through space, time, and rebirth.' The inscription was translucent. She realized there was something under it. Alex showed her how to move it over. It was a the V-constellation in rubies and diamonds. And in the center was a blue sapphire with pieces of emerald in it. It was earth. Placing the inscription back over it, she realized you could see it through it somehow. "Alex, this is beautiful. But how."
He laughed. "I had some help." He kissed the tears he saw on her cheek. Happy Valentine's Day Isabel.
Kyle looked at Tess. This was it. He was going to tell her how he felt. "Um. I didn't know what to get you. I mean we are friend's, but we are more, at least I think we are. Or at least I want us to be. So as my friend and hopefully something more. So Happy Valentine's Day Tess. He gave her a gift bag. She took it and opened it. And burst into tears. "OH no. NO. I'm sorry. Don't cry." He looked around. "Help"
Tess was waving her hands at him. She gave him a big hug. "Oh Kyle. Don't be sorry. I love it. I've never had anyone give me a stuffed animal before. It's beautiful." She took the bear out of the bag. It was holding a heart. She realized the heart wasn't part of the bear, but a card. Sitting the bear on her lap, she read the card. 'Just as this bear holds a heart, so too do you now hold one. Mine. Happy Valentine's Day Tess.' "Oh Kyle."
Maria looked around at her friends. She loved this arrangement. The girls would get their gifts together at the Crashdown. Then the guys would get theirs at dinner. They thought of doing it all together, but the guys didn't have the same need to see what their pals got and to oh and ah over it. Well she looked around it was her turn. She was not going to expect a first edition, or an inscribed locket, or even a bear with a symbolic paper heart. Maria looked up at Michael and realized he never tried to be anything else, before they got together. The let downs were of her part. She wanted to much more. But he stayed anyway and listened to the comparison.
Michael watched Maria looking at him. It was different. The last time he saw that look in her eyes, was the night he climbed in her window. She was accepting as he was and whatever gift he came up. Boy was she going to be surprised. "Maria happy Valentine's Day. I hope you like your gift." It was a basket. It was wrapped in pretty iridescent paper that shimmered and reflected the colors of the rainbow. She almost didn't want to open it. She unwrapped the basket to find a card first. Opening it, she saw a drawing of her. Michael must have done it when she didn't know. It was beautiful. Under the card was a stable/display case sort of thing. It had a sign on it. 'Home to Ponies.' She saw that the front functioned as the stable and the back functioned as a display carrier. "Oh Michael." He made a motion for her to keep looking. She saw another type of holder, but didn't know what it was for. She looked at him and he motioned again. She pulled back the tissue paper and saw all her favorites scents and some she had never tried. They were bubble baths, oils, candles, candle holders, soaks, lotions, scrubs, masks. She looked up at him. "Oh my God. This is beautiful. I can't believe you did all this. You didn't have too. I love it, but what's second holder for?"
"You're welcome Maria. And yes I did. I enjoyed it. I didn't think I would, but I did. And the second holder is reinforced and water proof. All that stuff fits in there...well the things you are using fit in there. And when you're finished, you just run it under the shower to clean everything off and you can hang it to dry, without having to worry about rotting, or drainage or anything."
All eyes were on him. Kyle piped up first. "Way to go Guerin. I think you get the prize for best gift."
"Michael did you make the holders?"
"Yep Max I did."
Just then the Sheriff and Amy came into the Crashdown arguing. "Come on Amy, why won't you marry me?"
Kyle and Maria looked at each other and turned kinda green.
"Because Jim, I like what we have. I'm not ready..."
"Listen Amy, I like what we have too. A lot. But it's just not about sex, I really do love you."
"You love me?"
"Yes I love you."
"Then yes. Wait till we tell the kids."
Jim looked around and saw eight shocked faces. "I think they already know."
Happy Valentine's Day.
