You are Unique

Share on:

Thank you for being the unique individual that you are. My world would be a far lonelier place without you in it.

When I first posted that Positive Daily Thought, I was thinking about the teenagers I work with every day and the ones I love outside the classroom. The struggle to fit in is real. They work so hard to be accepted, to blend in, to match the aesthetic of whatever trend is currently ruling Facebook. It can feel like being unique is a flaw instead of a superpower. I Uniquelook at photos of them in a group, and sometimes it is almost impossible to tell them apart. The same clothes, the same makeup, the same carefully curated expressions meant to say, I belong.

When I go to graduation, it’s impossible to tell the kids apart because they all have the same hair styles. Unless you know what design they put on their mortarboard, they are all lost in a sea of sameness. It’s a shame because when you talk to them one on one, you can see the things that make them unique shine through. They just don’t want to share that with the other kids and be seen as different.

But every once in a while, one of them steps away from the mold. Maybe they dye their hair a wild color, or wear something that does not match anyone else’s outfit, or voice an opinion that is not safe. When that happens, the energy of the group changes. You can see their spark, their unique light, shining through. It is a quick glimpse of who they really are beneath the layers of performance and pressure. And it is beautiful.

We are all Unique

The truth is, we all start off unique. When we are little, we draw crooked houses and sing off key and tell stories about dragons made of cotton candy without worrying about who is watching. Somewhere along the way, we learn that being different can draw criticism, and that fear pushes us to hide the most interesting parts of ourselves. We blend in to survive. The irony is that the very things that make us stand out are what the world needs most: your unique perspective, your weird humor, and your voice that does not sound like anyone else’s.

If you have ever felt like you needed permission to be yourself, here it is: you do not. You already are permission. You are the only version of you that exists. Out of more than eight billion people, no one else has your exact combination of experiences, talents, and quirks. That makes you irreplaceable and wonderfully unique.

So wear what makes you happy. Speak your truth even when your voice shakes. Try something creative that scares you a little. Let your unique self shine through, not because it is trendy, but because authenticity is magnetic. People might not always understand you right away, but the ones meant to walk beside you will see that light and recognize it instantly.

If you want more on why authenticity beats polish, I dive into it here:
Stop Chasing Perfection: Readers Want Scars, Not Sculptures.

And if you enjoy research-backed encouragement, this thoughtful read explores why authenticity supports well being and connection:
The Importance of Being Authentic. There is nothing wrong with doing a little research on the matter. I’m all for the learning and gathering information. Must be the teacher in me!

Go shine your weird, wonderful light today. Be the person who stands out in a sea of sameness. The world, and the people who love you, will be brighter because of your unique presence. And if the world looks at you funny, look right back at them and be proud of who you are!
