Giving Up

Share on:

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. – Thomas A. Edison

I kind of feel like a complete and total hypocrite writing about this topic because I am a champion quitter.  If I majored in procrastination, I minored in giving up.  Knowing this about myself, I can’t, in good conscience tell people not to give up.  So instead of telling you not to give up (but you shouldn’t give up), I’m going to talk about fear.  Why fear?   Because I think that’s the biggest reason why people give up.  I think deep down people (and by people, I mean me) are afraid of success.  It’s so much safer and easier to keep the status quo (cue High School Musical song). But it’s true, sometimes, even though things are crappy, it’s better than the unknown.  The unknown may be the best thing in the world that could ever happen to you, but it’s unchartered territory, so it can be scary AF.  Case in point, me, losing weight and dating.  I have convinced myself that I am undatable because I need to lose weight.  Nobody is going to want to be with me because I am overweight.  So logically, it would stand to reason that I would make better food choices and hit the gym regularly.  And I start, I start ALL THE TIME, but then I drop off and never reach my healthy goal weight.  This is a pattern with me, so I started thinking about why, and it’s because I’m afraid.  I’m afraid that if I lose the weight, I’m still going to be unlovable, and then it’s me, and not the weight.  That’s a whole other issue though, lol.  But it’s true, fear makes me give up  I think it’s true for a lot of us.  So, yes of course, don’t give up, but more importantly, look at what is motivating you to give up.  Start there, fix that and you’ll be on your way to success.
