Open Yourself to the Good
Open yourself to all the good that is out there. What? There is not any? Are you sure, because where I am standing I see a world that has you in it. And from where I am standing, it does not get any better than that.
I spend my days surrounded by people who insist the world is a miserable place and everything is terrible and there is nothing good out there at all. My heart breaks for them because they are missing the fact that they can be the good in the world. They have an opportunity to make a difference in the world and in the lives of others. All they need to do is open themselves up to the possibilities.
How to open yourself to the good
It is easy to fall into an endless loop of negativity. We scroll through bad news, hear complaints, and see frustration at every turn. After a while, the whole world can feel gray and heavy. The truth is, the good is still there. It always has been. When you decide to open yourself to the good, you start to notice it everywhere.
The smile from a stranger, the way sunlight filters through the trees, the dog wagging its tail like you are the best thing that ever happened. These moments are small, yet they are proof that joy exists. As you open yourself to the good, your attention shifts. What you look for, you find.
It does not stop at noticing. Once you open yourself to the good, you begin to create it. A kind word, a simple gesture, or a bit of patience can change someone’s entire day. Your energy ripples outward in ways you may never see, but it matters.
Choosing to open yourself to the good is not about pretending the bad does not exist. It is about deciding that the bad will not have the final word. This is not naïve optimism. It is a steady practice of perspective.
Positivity in action
Think about the last time someone showed you kindness out of nowhere. Maybe they held a door, paid you a compliment, or just listened when you needed to vent. That moment mattered. Now imagine offering that same moment to someone else. This is how your choice to open yourself to the good begins to help others do the same.
Your energy affects every space you enter. If you carry gratitude, people feel it. If you carry bitterness, they feel that too. You cannot control everything that happens, but you can control what you bring to the room. Years ago I wrote about this in my Think Positive post. Positivity is not denial. It is a choice to look for possibility and keep going.
Small shifts that change everything
- Gratitude journaling: Write down three good things before bed. Small counts. “Had coffee in peace” absolutely qualifies.
 - Positive people: Spend time with those who lift you up. Energy is contagious, so choose wisely.
 - Acts of kindness: Hold a door, send an encouraging text, let someone merge in traffic. These tiny moments help you open yourself to the good again tomorrow.
 - Pause and breathe: When frustration hits, take a slow breath. A short pause can reset your outlook.

If you want more encouragement, this reflective piece from The Optimist Daily explores how choosing to see the good becomes a habit that strengthens hope.
Be the good you are searching for
Being good does not require fixing everything. You may not be able to solve the world’s problems, but you can brighten your corner of it. Listen to someone who feels unheard. Offer patience in a rushed moment. Choose understanding instead of judgment. Tell yourself daily, “open yourself to the good,” and watch your lens shift.
Today, choose to open yourself to the good and notice one beautiful thing. Appreciate it. Then do one kind thing for someone else. Keep repeating that simple rhythm. Over time you will see that the good was never gone. It was waiting for you to notice, to name it, and to pass it on.
