What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself. – Abraham Maslow
How do you change anything about yourself? Well as the quote says, the first thing you have change is how you see yourself. If you only change the
outside, but not the inside, it’s not going to work.
I’ve always been a fairly shy person. At times I would really try and push myself and be more outgoing, but it never really worked. Well before I left for college (ancient history time) I made a decision to change. I started seeing myself as more outgoing. I visualized myself acting like the “popular” kids from high school. I became aware of how I acted and how I wanted to act, and I made the change. I’m still pretty shy, but I’m way better than I was.
You can’t make external changes until you make internal changes. Those are the hardest ones to make. When you watch all those makeover shows, they always suggest the people go through counseling to address the inner issues so the outer changes will stick. It’s good advice. How do you change? With a lot of introspection and a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it.
