The Eagle and the Hawk
Disclaimer: Harry belongs to JKR and a host of others. The song, The Eagle and the Hawk, belongs to RCA, I think (written by Denver/Taylor). None of it’s mine. Please don’t sue me for borrowing it. You won’t get diddly-squat.Rating: G

I am the eagle
I live in high country
In rocky cathedrals
I reach to the sky
I am the hawk
And there’s blood on my feathers
But time is still turning
They soon will be dry
The sky was still an inky black; dawn hadn’t even touched the horizon with her light, but yet Harry was wide-awake. Quidditch practice wasn’t for hours, but he could feel the pitch beckoning him anyhow … calling him to ride before his teammates joined him. He grabbed his Firebolt and left the castle.
The grass on the field was damp. Harry’s shoes squeaked as he trod over the dew-dampened lawn. He saw a hint of sunrise, but the sky remained dark. He mounted his broomstick and kicked off into the charcoal-colored sky. He breathed the air in deeply as he ascended the sky and let go of the handle as he leveled off many, many feet above the ground, letting the wind whip through his Quidditch robes as he soared along … if anyone had been able to see him, they would have said he looked like a scarlet banner blazing through the sky, but Harry felt more like a bird.
And all those who see me
And all who believe in me
Share in the freedom
I feel when I fly
Come dance with the west wind
And touch all the mountain tops
Sail o’er the canyons
And up to the stars
Harry loved Quidditch, plain and simple. The cheering crowd gave him an adrenaline rush, but even the thrill of hearing fans shouting their praises for Gryffindor as he sought to catch that tiny, ever-elusive, golden sphere couldn’t be matched by the pleasure he got every time he was in the air. If Quaffles, Bludgers and even Snitches ceased to be, Harry would still be able to find pure satisfaction racing through the sky on his Firebolt.
And reach for the heavens
And hope for the future
And all that we can be
And not what we are
Harry loved Quidditch, but he loved flying more.
