Re: Lune Spectrale - Updated 10/18/02
Part Ten

Far away from Hogwarts – in a place so secretive, even the closest followers of the Dark Lord were unaware of its location – a mystery waited unraveling. This mystery would change the world for Genevieve, if ever it were sorted out.

*****

Lord Voldemort had just called the Death Eaters to apparate to this undisclosed site – and one by one, his disciples arrived. The hooded supporters formed a circle and waited. Palms sweating – knees knocking in the case of some of the more cowardly ones – the Death Eaters remained in formation with bated breath in expectation of the Dark Lord’s arrival. And then he came – in an instant, Voldemort had apparated to the center of the circle and sneered at them maliciously, his red eyes glaring down on them like two balls of fire. The circle of men dropped to their knees and the sinister lips of their lord and master curled triumphantly. One by one, they crawled to his feet and kissed the hem of his robes – it was a sickeningly morose sight, as the men prostrated themselves before him and paid him homage.

“Death Eaters,” he said icily. His spider-like hands rubbed the bone-white skin on his chin nonchalantly. “How kind of you all to join me.”

One of the Death Eaters cautiously moved his hand to his left arm and clenched the forearm, as Voldemort had been speaking. The dark mark had begun to burn slightly at its commander’s mention of joining him and had caught this particular devotee off-guard.

“Nott,” said Voldemort indifferently. “Is something the matter with your arm?”

“No, Master!” said Nott quickly.

“Because I can give something that will really cause you some discomfort, you quivering imbecile – would you like that? You think a little twinge on your arm is bad? I can give something that will make you scream for mercy …”

Nott was shaking and quaking so badly, his robes looked like they were being blown by a strong wind.

“Please … no, Master!” pleaded Nott.

Voldemort gave him a bored stared and flared his slits for nostrils before saying,

“I don’t have time to bother with that right now at any rate – perhaps later, Nott. Perhaps later.”

He puffed up his chest and addressed the group again, having had his fill of torturing the frightened Nott half to death.

“My loyal Death Eaters,” he said quietly. “Through the expertise of Macnair, I have recently attained a most valuable acquisition.”

He turned to his left and pointed his wand – the individuals in the circle in the line of fire scrambled out of his aim and he said calmly, “ Accio, effigy.”

A stone sculpture of a man drifted in the air and landed with a thud on the ground beside Lord Voldemort. One of the Death Eaters had to fight hard to contain his surprise when seeing whose likeness the sculpture represented.

Severus Snape nearly gasped aloud when seeing the stone face of Remus Lupin staring blankly at him.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... r>Never trust anything that can think for itself, if you can't see where it keeps its brain.

Re: Lune Spectrale - Updated 10/23/02
Part Eleven

When Severus Snape returned to Hogwarts later that evening, he shunned company more than he normally would have. He took dinner alone in his private dungeon chambers and sunk down into a leather armchair after the meal, and mulled over the meeting he and the other Death Eaters had had with Voldemort earlier that day.

Lord Voldemort had shown them all the stone effigy of Lupin as if it had been a trophy – a prize given to him by his faithful Macnair. He hadn’t given them much more information about it than the fact that Lupin had been turned to stone after leaving the Ministry’s execution center – Snape could only assume that Macnair had brought him Lupin’s body after the execution and he was later petrified, but why? What was the significance of turning him to stone? He didn’t share any specific details – Voldemort quite enjoyed dangling little bits of this and that right under the Death Eaters noses, then holding out on sharing the finer points with them. It was a power thing with him, Snape was sure – Voldemort loved flexing his supremacy muscles in front of his flock of supporters.

Snape would just have to be watchful and attentive in order to work out this new mystery. He reluctantly got out of his armchair and headed up to the headmaster’s office, preparing himself to share this new quandary with Dumbledore.

*****

Genevieve flipped through a Charms textbook Professor Flitwick had loaned her. She leafed through the chapters covering basic charms without much concentration – she and Lupin had covered most of those. She turned over some more pages and read, with a little more interest, a unit covering intermediate charms.

I wonder if there’s a charm to keep a pregnancy hush-hush, she thought, not really all that seriously. But the more she pondered the thought, the more curious she became about it. She tossed the rest of the pages aside and opened the Charms book to its index.

There was nothing under “P” for pregnancy. Not at all surprising, she thought. This is a school textbook. I don’t guess they want students getting any ideas …

Her eyes scanned across to the next page, to the letter “S.” Secrets, see Fidelius Charm, Advanced Magic Unit, the heading read. She turned back to the section labeled “F” and found that the Fidelius Charm was covered on page 746.

The textbook only gave minimal information about the charm. The secret is stored within a designated Secret-Keeper and can’t be revealed until the Secret-Keeper chooses to divulge the secret. This was the same charm used on Wormtail – Genevieve remembered. And he betrayed Harry’s parents by disclosing the Potters’ secret whereabouts to Lord Voldemort.

She awkwardly wondered whether the Fidelius Charm would work with her secret. She could get Sirius to be her Secret-Keeper and even though people would look at her ever-swelling belly, they’d be oblivious to the fact that she was pregnant, so long as Sirius didn’t say anything.

She decided it was worth a shot to ask him, at any rate, so she made off for the owlery to send him word by owl post.

*****

Once in the owlery, Genevieve took out a piece of parchment and a quill and began to compose a brief letter:

Dear Snuffles,

I need to speak to you about a certain matter. Can we meet tomorrow in the same location as before?

Genevieve

She tied the letter to the leg of a screech owl and sent him flying in the direction of Hogsmeade. Once she’d seen the owl off and checked the bottoms of her boots for owl droppings, she walked back down towards her room.

In the corridor adjacent the stairway that led to her floor of the castle, Genevieve took pause as she heard footfalls from behind.

Oh, for the love of Pete, thought Genevieve as she glanced over her shoulder and saw Snape’s billowing black robes. He was exactly the last person she wanted to run into that night.

But, much to her amazement, he barely broke stride long enough to bid her a curt “Good evening” and he continued on, looking like his thoughts were completely elsewhere.

How terribly odd, she thought, as she watched him disappear down the stairway. I’d have thought for sure he’d ask me how the potion ended up. Genevieve shrugged. She wasn’t going to complain about her sudden good fortune. Little did she know what Snape’s mind was so focused on.

<img src="http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ...

Never trust anything that can think for itself, if you can't see where it keeps its brain.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub129.ezboard.com/bmajiklmoonsr ... boo1974 at: 10/28/02 6:27:28 pm

Re: Lune Spectrale - Updated 10/28/02
First off, I want to apologize for not updating sooner. I think my muse has taken a vacation! This part was painfully difficult to write. I don't think it's my best, but I wanted to get it written and posted before everyone began to think I fell off the face of the earth! <img src=http://www.uniquehardware.co.uk/server- ... /cwm27.gif ALT=":lol"> I have a few days off, so I'm hoping with a little relaxation, my muse will come back to me! Anyhow, here's part twelve ...

*****

Part Twelve

Genevieve clutched her moonstone pendant tightly in her fist as she slept that night and had the strangest of dreams.

She watched a scene in her sleep – the setting was a bedroom, decorated with infant furnishings – walls covered with paper painted with puffy, white clouds and pastel dragons with polka dots.

In the nursery, she watched herself sitting in a rocking chair, cradling a small bundle wrapped in a downy blanket and whispering a rhyme in a peaceful voice,

“Dragon stretch your wings and blow puffs of fire. Then off you go, flying over towns below. Now safely land on tippytoe.”

She rocked and rocked, humming softly and supporting the tiny child’s form.

The dragons in the wallpaper seemed to be enchanted – they flew through the clouds, which resembled giant, swollen heaps of cotton candy. The mint green dragon had nearly collided with the pale pink one. And the one the color of orange sherbet was rolling with laughter until he slipped off the edge of a cloud and had to test the theory of whether or not a dragon could really land on tiptoe.

In her sleep, Genevieve was truly captivated by watching the strange scene in the wallpaper. And seeing herself with her baby made her feel wonderfully content. As she observed more of the dragon antics, the door in the nursery opened. A figure was walking in, but as the dreamer, Genevieve found it difficult to see the person’s face.

It was a man. She was sure of that. The figure’s stature made her certain. And it was a man the dream-version of herself was pleased to see. The Genevieve in the rocking chair smiled warmly and she heard the baby coo …

And then she was awake.

Damn, Genevieve thought.

*****

Genevieve received a reply back regarding the owl she sent to Sirius the following morning. An owl had delivered his message as she was groggily recalling the odd dream she’d had the night before. He instructed her to meet him the following evening and asked her to bring food.

So, the next evening, wrapped in a cloak that served the dual purpose of keeping her warm (the temperature had taken a sudden dip) and hiding a food basket, Genevieve slipped out of the castle and hiked out to meet Sirius.

She huffed and puffed her way up to the cave and paused at the entrance, catching her breath.

Sirius emerged from the shadows and scolded her.

“You didn’t walk all this way from Hogwarts, did you?” he asked her, noticing her flushed cheeks and rather disheveled hair.

“Well…” started Genevieve, guiltily.

“You could have just apparated once you got to the school gates! That walk’s got to be at least …”

“I know, I know,” she said. “But I like the autumn air. And once I had made it to the outskirts of Hogsmeade, I thought it would be rather pointless to apparate since I had gotten that far. Of course, I was reassessing the situation once I actually made it up here.”

“Well, next time you need to see me, we’re arranging something with Dumbledore. You shouldn’t be coming all this way …”

“Yes, Dad,” interrupted Genevieve in a sarcastic voice. “Point taken. Lecture over!”

Sirius gave her another reproachful look, but said no more on the subject. Instead, he turned a keen eye to the basket she had pulled out from under her cloak.

“So, what did you bring for dinner?” he asked eagerly. “I mean, I’m not exactly living off of rats these days – Dumbledore sends food – but, I don’t exactly have a kitchenette here, either.” He laughed as he gestured to his humble surroundings.

“Help yourself,” Genevieve said as she offered him the basket. “Eat all you like – I had dinner myself before class earlier this evening.”

“Are you sure?” asked Sirius as he looked longingly at the basketful of food.

“Positive,” she replied.

“So,” he said as he began to munch a bit of bread. “What’s this urgent matter you needed to see me about, eh?”

Genevieve nervously coiled a strand of hair around her finger as she looked at him. She was suddenly quite anxious about asking him to be her Secret-Keeper. And after she broached the subject to him, she realized why she was.

He wasn’t angry or upset, but he definitely didn’t receive the request in the manner she’d been hoping for. He objected to her notion that Dumbledore would turn his back on her if she knew about the pregnancy. He told her that there was no way to keep it from him forever – that once she had the baby, the charm would expire and surely the headmaster would want to know where a newborn baby had come from. Genevieve didn’t dispute that particular argument.

In the end, Sirius gave in – but very reluctantly.

*****

After she left (apparating back to the gates of Hogwarts at his strong command), Sirius sat on the cold floor of the cave and shook his head.

What have I gotten myself into? he thought.

He wasn’t sure if he was taking his devotion to her too far with this request. His sense of duty told him it was his obligation to protect her – she was, after all, the love of his best friend’s life. Lupin was gone, so it was Sirius’ responsibility to look after her, especially in her current condition.

He just wasn’t exactly sure casting a Fidelius Charm was the right way to go. If it had been up to him, he’d have solved matters in another way. The decent, honorable thing to do – in his mind anyway – would have been to marry her. But, Sirius knew it wasn’t up to him to solve matters. Besides, several barriers stood between him and that particular solution. One, being that he was still a wanted man and until his name was cleared, marriage was utterly out of the question. And two, being that he’d never in a million years be able to convince Genevieve to marry him even if he wasn't a fugitive. Honorable as his intentions were, he couldn’t picture her accepting any proposals at the moment.

He sighed as he opened one of the bottles of butterbeer Genevieve had smuggled to him. This is going to be an interesting ride.

*****

Author’s Note: The rhyme Genevieve recites to her baby in the dream is a children’s poem called Dragon and was written by Lynn Murray. Re: Lune Spectrale - Updated 11/07/02
Part Thirteen

Sirius had warned Genevieve that the Fidelius Charm was a very involved magical spell – and it could not be completed without a certain finessing of particular skills – skills he proclaimed himself to being rusty at. He’d asked for a day or so to make sure all would go well. After all, a couple more days wouldn’t make much of a difference. And secretly, he was hoping Genevieve would change her mind.

*****

During the next afternoon, Genevieve wandered down to the school library. Her goal was to look for children’s books – she recalled hearing studies about the benefits of women who read to their babies before birth. She looked around and wandered, finally, into the section marked “Muggle Studies.” There was a subsection labeled “Muggle Fiction,” and yet another categorized as “Muggle Children’s Literature.”

She skimmed through the volumes and stopped when she came to the title, Tessa’s Magic Swing.

Muggles writing about magic? It wouldn’t be the first time, she thought, recalling the fairy tales she’d enjoyed so much as a small child.

She leafed through the book and looked at the beautiful illustrations – stunning watercolor paintings depicting a little girl standing on a swing, going higher and higher into a starlit sky. The girl passed a brightly colored bird and went so high, she reached the moon and landed on a moonbeam. Genevieve read a passage,

“Swing me high,” Genevieve read from the book. She noticed the look of pure delight on the little girl’s face in the illustration. She read on. “How high?” The child’s father was pushing her in the “magic” swing. “As high as the moon …”

Genevieve dropped the book. The clatter made Madam Pince, the librarian, aware of her presence and she rushed to the “Muggle Studies” section to see what the matter was.

“Are you having a problem, girl?” asked Madam Pince sternly.

“No,” answered Genevieve quickly as she scrambled to pick up the book.

The librarian eyed the book suspiciously. “Books for Muggle children?” she asked with alarming interest.

“Oh,” said Genevieve, feeling beads of perspiration begin to form on her forehead. “I was just feeling nostalgic …” She stuffed the book back onto the shelf and left the library with haste.

*****

Back in her room, she pulled her moonstone from the pocket of her robes. She’d been carrying it around with her almost everywhere she went, but she hadn’t been able to bring herself to actually wear it. She didn’t know why. There was some unexplainable feeling she got whenever she looked at it or touched it – she couldn’t seem to make her fingers fasten the clasp so she could wear the pendant. Maybe it stemmed from the last incident she had with it, when she was under the influence of the Imperius Curse. Or maybe she was just afraid of what she would feel if she wore it – it was the source of a unique bond between she and Lupin. Perhaps she was afraid of what the repercussions would be if this bond reached beyond the grave …

She looked at the milky-white stone as it lay in the palm of her hand. She closed her eyes and let her memory drift back to the previous Christmas, when Remus had given her the mystical pendant. She could hear his voice again – peaceful and calm. She saw his face again – warm and smiling. And then …

She opened her eyes and dropped the stone. It had become scorching in her hand, like a hot coal. The image in her mind had changed. She had no longer seen the warm, smiling face of Remus – that face had turned gray and stone cold. A shudder ran down her spine as she looked at the moonstone, lying harmlessly on her floor.

*****

Author’s Note: As many of you know, I’m an art teacher. From time to time, I find inspiration from children’s publications. And now that Genevieve is pregnant, I find myself being able to work in more and more of the interesting things I discover at work. I’m not sure whether or not Tessa’s Magic Swing is an actual book or not – I found it in a periodical called Ladybug: The Magazine For Young Children (June 2000 Edition). The author is Mary Ann Jost and the illustrator is Feeroozeh Golmohammadi. She’s an artist from Iran and her illustrations for that story are truly magical! Re: Lune Spectrale - Updated 11/07/02
Part Fourteen

When the day had come to meet with Sirius and perform the Fidelius Charm, Genevieve wondered whether or not she should tell him about the strange occurrence with the moonstone or not. She spent the morning weighing the pros and cons, the afternoon making rationalizations for not telling him and thought all through Potions class about how she was finally able to justify to herself why it was best not to tell him - at least in her own mind.

She hurriedly packed her bag after the lesson was over and Snape, arms crossed, looked at her expectantly.

“Is there something you’d like to share with me?” he asked, attempting to be casual, but failing miserably.

I don’t have time for this, she thought in frustration.

“Not really – no.” she said aloud.

“Nothing at all – no results on a certain homework assignment I gave you?”

Ugh, Genevieve thought. Now we’re speaking in code.

“Oh, that,” she said. She was willing to play along, if it meant he’d get off her back and let her get on to her meeting with Sirius. “The outcome of the homework assignment – completely and utterly negative – nothing to worry about. G’night, now.”

She attempted to leave the dungeon, but Snape wasn’t going to be that cooperative.

“Are you sure you did the assignment right?” he asked, raising one eyebrow warily.

“Of course,” she said, getting more irritable by the second. She tried to get to the door, but he was conveniently blocking her path. “I need to go. I’m meeting with – someone.”

A new look of interest passed over his face. “Someone? Anyone I know? Fours legs … hairy … drools a great deal …”

“Good night, Severus,” Genevieve said harshly, attempting to convince him to move. She was trying very hard to keep an even temper.

Grudgingly, Snape yielded. Genevieve left in a huff and he watched her trudge back up the dungeon staircase to the castle above.

*****

Under his breath, Snape said, “I’ve seen that look before – she can’t fool me.” The last glimpse of Genevieve disappeared at the top of the staircase and he turned back into his dungeon classroom and headed for his office.

He collapsed into his chair and pulled it up close to his desk. Leafing through parchment after parchment, he scanned the paper, looking for clues. Looking for reasons Voldemort would have need of Remus Lupin’s petrified body. What was the significance? What was the meaning behind it? Voldemort never did these sorts of things without a reason.

Potter has to figure in, he thought. But how? If it’s bait, then how does he intend to reel him in?

He ran his right hand over his left arm. He’d have to wait until he was called again to find out any more answers. Research was useless.

He wouldn’t have to wait long.

*****

Pop.

Genevieve apparated in front of the Sirius’ cave and called through the shadows to him.

“Sirius,” she said in an undertone. “It’s me …”

“Genevieve?” answered Sirius.

“Where are you?” She squinted and aimed her wand. “Lumos!”

The wandlight illumined the opening to the cave and a beam of light shined towards Sirius’ face.

*****

“Are you sure you want to do this?” he asked.

He looked at her face, wandlight flickering and making her features dance in the darkness. She’s so pretty, he thought before he could stop himself. Then he discontinued the thought – a dutiful friend would not be thinking how beautiful his best friend’s lover looked standing in the warm glow of a wand’s light.

He swished his wand and a fire appeared, giving a bright light to the entire cave. That’s better, he thought – now she’s just Genevieve. He looked up at her and his stomach sunk. Why had he let those thoughts surface? Damn it, she’ll never be “just Genevieve” again, you stupid git!

“I’m certain I want to do this,” said Genevieve, her voice shaking him back to reality.

Sirius breathed in deeply and nodded. “Just so you’re sure. Raise your wand.”

She raised her arm, sandalwand wand in hand. He raised his. And together, they cast the spell.

"Never trust anything that can think for itself, if you can't see where it keeps its brain." - Arthur Weasley

"D'you think we've got nothing better to do in Potions than listen to Snape?" - Ron to Hermione

"Make way for the Heir of Slytherin, seriously evil wizard coming through...." - Fred & George

"Yeah, he's off to the Chamber of Secrets for a cup of tea with his fanged servant." - George about Harry.

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." - Prof. Dumbledore

<img src="http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/07 ...
