Lune de l'amant (A Lupin-Centric Fanfic) - FINISHED!!!

This is my first attempt at fanfic, so please excuse any boo-boos or flaws.

Here's what I brainstormed -- It's takes place during Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts. Lupin has come back to teach Defense Against Dark Arts once again.

In Hogsmeade, Harry, Ron & Hermione have befriended a kind & pretty young waitress at the Three Broomsticks. She stuck up for Hermione when Malfoy was being nasty to her, calling her "mudblood," etc. Her name is Genevieve & she confides in the trio that she was born of muggle parentage (like Hermione). She received a letter from Hogwarts when she was eleven years old, but her parents were afraid to let her go. All through adolescence & young adulthood, her "differences" were more & more difficult to disguise. She met Madam Rosmerta in London, who invited her to work at the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade after hearing a story about her -- a poor, young woman who worked in a muggle pub who kept (accidentally, mind you) making the drinks explode! Through the gossip-wire, Rosmerta had heard of her misfortune (not being able to attend Hogwarts) & felt the need to reach out to her & bring her into a magical community.

Harry, Ron & especially Hermione also feel the need to reach out to her & lend a helping hand. Hermione gets the idea to ask Professor Lupin to give her magical training on the weekends. She gleefully offers to be a teaching assistant to Lupin, eager to share her knowledge with her new friend.

The trio tell Lupin that there is someone they know in Hogsmeade who needs "tutoring" in magic. They aren't specific with him who this person is, much less that it's a woman! He is very much surprised when he meets her. They had a brief encounter about a month previous, but it's evident that there is some sparkage!

Fingers crossed that you'll like it! Here's part one of my currently title-less fanfic . . . **drumroll**

Edit: Thanks for the French translation for the title, Tracie.

**********************************************

PART ONE:

School had only been in session at Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft & Wizardry for a week. There was no moon in sight in the dark sky. Remus Lupin sighed as he walked down the street in Hogsmeade, towards the Three Broomsticks, where he intended to relax over a drink. The moonless sky caused a wave of peace to come over him, one of the first moments of peace he’d felt since his return to teach at the school. Many had questioned the headmaster’s decision to have him return to Hogwart’s, including Lupin himself. He’d left the school over a year & a half ago when it had been revealed that he was a werewolf, a malady he had suffered from since childhood and had learned to control in adulthood, but one that he believed would be a detriment to his performance as professor at a school. He didn’t want any harm to come to his students by accident. If for some reason he didn’t take his wolfsbane potion, the outcome could be devastating.

Lupin entered the dimly lit pub. It was relatively quiet for a Saturday evening. Madam Rosmerta was busy serving a gruff-looking witch a large tankard of gillywater. The wizard with her was a thin, older man with more hair on his chin than on his head. He had already begun to drink from the tankard of mulled mead that Rosmerta had served him. A group of grim-faced goblins sat in the darkest corner of the pub, surrounded by rings of smoke and deep in conversation. Lupin made his way to an empty table and waited for Madam Rosmerta to take his order.

Suddenly, a great spark came from the goblins table & smoke was so think, their faces could barely be made out.

“Good gracious!” shouted Madam Rosmerta. The gruff witch and thin wizard nearly dumped their drinks over. Lupin jumped from his seat at the loud noise.

“What’s going on,” he asked Rosmerta.

But Madam Rosmerta hadn’t heard him. She was too busy chasing the goblins out of the pub.

“And stay out!” she said as she slammed the door to the Three Broomsticks with all of her might. She turned around and stormed up to the bar with an exasperated look on her face.

“Gen!” she called to the room in the back of the bar. “There’s been another mess – those rancid little beasts, trying to blow up my pub! C’mon out here and clean up while I tend to the professor.”

“Be right there,” a soft voice answered from the back room.

Madam Rosmerta trudged over to Professor Lupin’s table, still obviously shaken up over the goblin incident. “What can I get for you, Professor?” she asked as she pushed a wisp of hair out of her eyes. She was looking rather frazzled at this point.
“I think I’ll just take a butterbeer, Rosmerta, but I’ll have it to go. Looks like you need some peace around here.”

The couple who had ordered and nearly spilled the gillywater & mulled mead had left right after the goblins were chased out and it wasn’t likely that Lupin was going to cause a ruckus of any sort, but Rosmerta couldn’t deny that the commotion had unnerved her.

“Thank you kindly, Professor. I’ll have that right to you, then I think I’ll be closing the bar for the night. It’s been quiet as a tomb around here anyhow, before the goblin disaster, that is.”
She went behind the bar to fix the drink and as she did, Lupin noticed a young woman coming out of the back room behind the bar. She was a striking woman, who looked to be in her mid-20’s. Her hair was a deep brunette, wavy and long. Her skin was milky-white, but it wasn’t her appearance that stunned Lupin so much as it was her eyes. They caught him off-guard, even from across the pub. She had barely even glanced his way, but it was long enough for him to catch a glimpse of what most closely resembled two radiant sapphires beaming from the beautiful woman’s face.

She walked straight over to the table in the corner, which was still steaming like a great, big charcoal grille. She took a large blanket that she had been carrying from underneath her left arm, covered the table with it & began to beat the tabletop with both hands.

Lupin was just about to offer to help her, when Madam Rosmerta brought him his extra-foamy butterbeer, in a to-go tankard. “Here you are, Professor. Hope you enjoy it & forgive us for that bit of hullabaloo.” She hastily showed Lupin to the door.

Remus Lupin found himself in the street outside of the Three Broomsticks, holding a butterbeer and contemplating the set of blue eyes that belonged to a certain young barmaid.

The title means "Lover's Moon," Hermione. Sounds much cooler in French, don't you agree?! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Here's the second part . . .

**********************************************

PART TWO:

Halloween was fast approaching and Harry, Ron & Hermione were preparing for their first visit to Hogsmeade of the school year. Harry & Ron already had a list of items they wanted to purchase from Zonko’s and Honeyduke’s and they were all dying for a frothy round of butterbeers from the Three Broomsticks.

After they finished their last class of the day, Transfiguration with Professor McGonagall, Harry, Ron & Hermione traveled down to the magical village of Hogsmeade with all third-year students and above. They regarded this as one of their favorite of all school priveledges. Harry and Ron loaded up on the latest in tricks and jokes from Zonko’s, while also stocking up on some old stand-bys as well, including a fresh supply of dungbombs. At Honeyduke’s, they stood in a long line to make sure they had a generous enough amount of sweets & treats to get them through to the next Hogsmeade visit, which wouldn’t be until right before the Christmas break.

The trio made their way to the Three Broomsticks and found that many of their classmates had done so as well. Fellow Gryffindors, Parvati Patil & Lavender Brown, sat with a couple of Ravenclaw fifth-years, including Parvati’s twin sister, Padma. Groups of Hufflepuff third-years were anxiously awaiting their first taste of butterbeers in Hogsmeade at the bar and a group from Slytherin house occupied the dark and now scorched table in the corner of the pub. Harry looked over and caught Draco Malfoy glowering his way. His lackeys, Crabbe & Goyle, as always, flanked him on both sides.

Harry ignored Malfoy and company and commented to Ron and Hermione on how busy the pub was.

“Wonder if we’ll get served this century,” Ron said, with a note of sarcasm.

“It does look as though Madam Rosmerta has finally gotten some help, though,” said Hermione, as she noticed the dark-haired barmaid who was serving the Patil sisters.

“I wonder who she is,” said Harry. “I don’t remember ever seeing her around Hogsmeade before.”

“Not too bad on the eyes, though,” said Ron. He blushed as red as the hair on his head after realizing the words had actually come out of his mouth.

Hermione & Harry glanced at each other and chuckled. As Ron’s face finally returned to its natural color and after most of the tables had been waited on, Madam Rosmerta appeared to take their orders. Upon doing so, she headed back to the bar to fix their drinks.

From the table in the corner, Draco Malfoy called after her, “Better not bring that nasty mudblood’s order out before you bring out mine!” He glanced over and sneered directly at Hermione.

Now it was Hermione’s face that was turning as red as Ron’s hair, but not out of embarrassment. The steam that was practically coming out of her ears told them she was as angry as a hornet.

Malfoy was now mouthing the words “filthy, stinking mudblood” at Hermione. It took both Ron & Harry to hold her back.

“Don’t give into him, Hermione!” snapped Ron. “He’s just trying to get to you.”

“Well, it worked,” growled Hermione, as she tried to get up again, this time, wand in hand.

“Ron’s right,” said Harry. “If you give in to Malfoy, you’ll just end up getting into trouble. You don’t want detention on Halloween, do you?”

“I guess not,” said Hermione, half-heartedly. She began to relax a little in her seat, but mentally she was considering which hex she should put on Malfoy.

The dark-haired barmaid was walking towards the Slytherin table with drinks on a serving tray.

“It’s about time,” said Pansy Parkinson, a Slytherin girl.

“At least our order made it out before that foul-faced mudblood's did, or else there would have been hell to pay!” stated Malfoy triumphantly.

The dark-haired barmaid’s sparkling blue eyes turned steely as she heard Malfoy’s boorish comment.

“Why, you rude, vulgar boy!!” she said in astonishment. “I’ll teach you a lesson!”

She turned on her heel and placed all of the butterbeers intended for the Slytherin party onto Harry, Ron & Hermione’s table.

Draco Malfoy’s mouth gaped wide-open in shock. Crabbe & Goyle looked at each other in utter confusion and Pansy Parkinson sniffed snootily, “Why, I never!!”

Malfoy led the group out of the Three Broomsticks, but not before calling out to Madam Rosmerta in a booming voice, “My father will hear about this!!”

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 7/17/02 3:46:09 pm

PART THREE:

Ron smirked and took a sip of butterbeer. “He’s got to come up with some new material. That line about running to his father is so old, it’s growing cobwebs!”

Harry nodded in agreement and chugged his butterbeer.

Hermione, who was looking over towards the bar where the dark-haired barmaid was now fixing more drinks, hadn’t seemed to be listening. She looked back at Harry & Ron.

“That was an awfully nice thing to do. I think I should go and thank her.”

Hermione got up from the table and strolled over to the bar. The barmaid had just finished serving a large group of Ravenclaw boys & looked to be taking a bit of a break before the pub had a chance to be swamped with even more Hogwarts students.

“Excuse me, Miss,” said Hermione, politely.

The barmaid looked up and smiled warmly, somewhat expecting why Hermione was there.

“My name is Hermione Granger and I’d just like to thank you for what you did.”

“Oh, it was nothing,” whispered the barmaid, with a wink, as Madame Rosmerta walked nearby. “ My name is Genevieve, by the way.”

Madame Rosmerta made her way back to where Hermione & Genevieve were standing and threw her hands down on the bar, looking as if she was done in for the day.

“Well, Gen – as soon as the last of these students clear out, I’m closing up for the afternoon. Why don’t you take an extended break and meet me back here in time to help me handle the evening crowd?”

“No, I should help you with clean up,” Genevieve said thoughtfully.

“Not a problem, dearie,” replied Rosmerta as she pulled out her wand from her apron pocket.

Genevieve nodded. “Oh, yes. I forgot,” she said quietly.

“Quite all right, my dear. Quite all right,” said Madame Rosmerta as she patted Genevieve on the back in a motherly sort of way. Gen took off her apron and hung it on a hook behind the bar.

Hermione piped up quickly. “Why don’t you come for a walk with my friends and I? We have some time before we have to go back to the school! I could properly introduce you – I know they’d be delighted to meet you!”

The look on Hermione’s face was hard to say no to. Genevieve found herself powerless to decline the invitation and agreed.

After introductions had finished and Harry had assured her that he was indeed the Harry Potter (he showed her the scar and everything), Genevieve led them out of the Three Broomsticks and up the High Street. They had decided upon settling down on the grass in the countryside. It was an unusually mild day for late October and the afternoon sun felt good as they sprawled out in the meadow, just beyond the village.

“It’s really lovely out here,” commented Genevieve. “I don’t think I’ve ever been quite this far out before.” She glanced around. “I should come out here more often.” She closed her eyes and breathed in the autumn air.

“What brought you to Hogsmeade in the first place, Genevieve?” inquired Hermione. “You’re new here, right?”

“That’s right.” She flashed one of her warm smiles again. “I came here last summer. I met Madam Rosmerta while I was working in London, at a muggle pub called the Bull & Finch. She said she’d heard of me & knew that I’d had problems – well, problems fitting in properly. I mean, you cause a few glasses of ale to explode and you’re not exactly labeled as normal, if you know what I mean.”

Ron laughed when she mentioned the exploding ale, but Harry & Hermione looked at her sympathetically. They could relate to living in muggle society and being regarded as “different” by everyone else.

Genevieve went on with her story. “Both of my parents are muggles. The year I turned eleven, I received an acceptance letter from Hogwarts, but my parents wouldn’t let me go. They were afraid to. They’d always known I’d had unique abilities, but they chose to ignore them. They dismissed it, saying I’d grow out of it as I got older.”

Harry, Ron & Hermione listed intently as she spoke.

“Don’t get me wrong, now,” she went on. “My parents are very loving people. It’s just that they had no knowledge of the magical world and what they didn’t know or understand, they tended to be frightened of.” She paused & took a deep breath. “Needless to say, I did not grow out of my ‘uniqueness’ and that’s what lead Madam Rosmerta to find me. I suppose there were all sorts of rumors flying around the magical community near London about the highjinks of a magically impaired witch at local taverns.”

“I’ll bet my father’s heard of you,” commented Ron. “Did you ever hear from the Ministry about blowing up muggle drinks?”

“Hmm,” began Genevieve. “I got an owl or two warning me, but I really had no way of controlling it, you see. It was a good thing Madam Rosmerta intervened when she did.”

“So, now that you’re at the Three Broomsticks, does Madam Rosmerta help you with magic?” inquired Harry.

“A little bit – here and there, when she can. She’s usually pretty bogged down, running both the pub and the inn with only me to help her,” said Genevieve.

As she sat and listened to Genevieve’s story, Hermione became determined to find a way to help her new friend out. She felt she owed her an act of kindness. She had, after all, knocked Malfoy down a few pegs earlier that afternoon. She definitely owed her big for that! She thought of something that would make a difference to Genevieve and the one thing she knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that would make a difference to her would be for her to learn to use magic properly. It had been the one major thing she had missed out on as an adolescent.

But how, was the question present in Hermione’s spinning mind. For that, she would need a teacher.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART FOUR:

For a while, Hermione considered taking on the task of teaching Genevieve all by herself. But, as she did research in the library at Hogwarts, she knew it would be too much of a burden to handle alone. Then, she thought of asking Harry & Ron to help out, but thought the better of it when she caught them making up more answers to their Divination homework one evening in the Gryffindor common room.

At lunchtime the next day in the Great Hall, Hermione told Harry & Ron what she had been thinking since their trip to Hogsmeade on Halloween. Much to her surprise, they both agreed with her about wanting to help Genevieve.

“But, who’s going to teach her?” asked Hermione wearily.

“What about you?” inquired Ron, right before he took a large bite of his shepherd’s pie.

Hermione shook her head. “I’ve already considered that possibility. Even with you two to help me, it wouldn’t work. We need a teacher, but who would be willing to help us out?”

“Not Snape,” said Harry, matter-of-factly. “And I’d rule out Trelawney, as well. We don’t want Genevieve to end up as spacey as her!”

“I’ll bet old McGonagall wouldn’t be up to the task,” said Ron, as he gulped the last bite of his pie down. “Anyhow, Genevieve’d never have time to work for Madam Rosmerta, what with all the homework she’d have to do.” His mind trailed off at that point, thinking of the two scroll Transfiguration essay that was due at the end of the week.

“What about Lupin?” suggested Harry.

“Brilliant, Harry! Lupin’s a great choice!” said Hermione excitedly.

“Do you think he’d be up for it?” asked Ron. “I mean, he is sort of out of commission at least once a month, you know.”

"The full moon’s not for another two weeks. If Professor Lupin decides to help, he’ll have two whole weekends in which he can start to tutor Genevieve beforehand!” Hermione said, working the plan out in her mind as she spoke. “Now, all we have left is to ask him.”

“Well, we have Defense Against the Dark Arts this afternoon. Afterwards is as good a time as any,” said Harry.

The three picked up their books, left the Great Hall and headed towards Lupin’s classroom. After a pretty enlightening lesson on protecting one’s hearing from the dreadful wails of a banshee by using the “to fall on deaf ears” spell, Harry, Ron & Hermione waited patiently as Professor Lupin cleaned up a bit of the potion he’d spilled on his shabby briefcase. The potion, which must be taken before the spell is spoken, was made from earwax, the pincers of an earwig & a warm solution of feverwort and larch needles.

“Excuse me, Professor Lupin?” said Hermione courteously. “Can we speak to you for just a moment?”

Lupin continued to mop up the potion, not having heard Hermione at all. She stepped a bit closer to his desk and he finally caught sight of her.

“Oh, Miss Granger,” he said, rather loudly. “And Harry & Ron – I didn’t realize you were still here. Please forgive me. It’ll take a few moments for this potion to wear off.” He patted his ears gingerly. “Excuse me if I seem to shout!”

Harry & Ron laughed a bit at the absurdity of the situation, but Hermione let out a disappointing moan. How were they going to convince Lupin to tutor Genevieve in magic if he couldn’t even hear them? Well, she wasn’t going to give up without even trying, that was for sure! She planted herself right in front of Lupin so that, if he had to, he could lip-read what she was saying to him. It’s all settled.”

Before Professor Lupin could say a word, Hermione, followed by Harry & Ron, had left the classroom. Just a taste of part five . . . it's still a work in progress! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

**********************************************

PART FIVE:

A large, snowy owl flew towards a miniature window in the back of the Three Broomsticks inn, perched outside on the sill and tapped lightly on the pane of glass. The owl used her short, hooked beak to tap on the windowpane again, this time rather impatiently.

"An owl post for me?" wondered Genevieve aloud, as she slowly walked towards the window. The poor bird's feathers were so ruffled when she finally popped through, that she ended up looking like she had been tumbled through a muggle clothes dryer. Finally got the chance to type out parts 5 through 8! <img src=http://www.westwoodi.net/~smilies/contr ... n_anim.gif ALT=":grin">

PART FIVE, continued

Genevieve carefully detached the letter from Hedwig’s outstretched leg, unfolded it and began to read.

Dear Genevieve,

Harry, Ron & I have been thinking of you ever since Halloween. We were delighted to meet you that day and really want to do something in return for the wonderful favor you did for us that day in the pub.

We remember how you said that you were “magically impaired.” We don’t think that’s true at all. We think with proper training, you could become a truly magnificent witch!

We’ve taken the liberty of arranging magic lessons for you with one of our professors. A meeting is set up for 8 PM Friday, right there at the Three Broomsticks.

If you have any questions or concerns, send a note back with Hedwig.

Your Friend,
Hermione Granger

Temporarily lacking the faculty of speech, Genevieve set the letter down on her writing desk and gaped at Hedwig. Finally, the ability to speak returned to her.

“Why, aren’t they the sweetest things, Hedwig?” She smiled at the owl. “How thoughtful of them. It’s a little embarrassing, I must admit, but thoughtful nonetheless.”

She picked up her quill & a piece of parchment and started to write a thank you note to her three young benefactors. When she was finished, she attached it to Hedwig’s leg and sent her on her way. Hedwig gave a look of exasperation, then shoved herself back through the window & flew on ruffled wings back to Hogwarts to deliver the letter.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART SIX:

All Friday morning & into the afternoon, Remus Lupin tried to figure out what he would say to the “mystery student” that Harry, Ron & Hermione had finagled him into meeting later that evening. Of course, he couldn’t agree to tutor this person. He didn’t even know who it was. And who in the world were those three meeting and befriending in Hogsmeade all of a sudden and out of the blue? It could be anyone – someone in league with You-Know-Who, perhaps. Or even You-Know-Who himself, in disguise. They should know better than to trust just anyone!

Lupin breathed in deeply, and then heaved a great sigh. He shouldn’t jump to any conclusions. Harry, Ron & Hermione did know better. He was sure whoever this person was, he was most likely on the up and up. But, there were other reasons he didn’t want to get involved, more personal reasons. He had come back to Hogwarts feeling very apprehensive. He was extremely uneasy about being there now. When he was there before, he had a false sense of security provided by the wolfsbane potion. He learned firsthand how precarious the situation could become if he missed even one dose. Would it be right for him to think he could just go about things as if he didn’t have a problem? Dumbledore had assured him that the strictest of measures had been taken to assure there would be no difficult situations to deal with regarding his transformations, but could he still ensure that if he were off in Hogsmeade practically every weekend tutoring someone who could potentially become his victim?

While Lupin was debating over the situation, Genevieve had been working an early shift at the pub. Madam Rosmerta had assured her the evening off to meet the Hogwarts professor who would be giving her magic lessons. She laughed when Gen told her she hadn’t even thought to ask which professor she should be expecting!

“I don’t know any of them by name, so it never occurred to me to ask,” said Genevieve woefully. “Tonight will be extra embarrassing now!”

“What do you have to be embarrassed about, my dear?” asked Rosmerta. “You’re a lovely young woman. You have a sharp mind. You just need a little help. There’s no shame in that. Your circumstances were extenuating.”

Genevieve was grateful for Madam Rosmerta’s care & understanding. It made her feel less like the curiosity she knew she already was. But, she still couldn’t help but feel somewhat disconcerted.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...
