PART SEVEN:

By early Friday evening, both Lupin and Genevieve were feeling very anxious, although for somewhat different reasons.

Genevieve sat in her cozy little room at the inn, wondering if she looked studious enough for a school professor to take her seriously. She glanced at the mirror above her bureau and ran her fingers through her long, wavy hair rather carelessly.

“Maybe if I had glasses,” she said to her reflection. She contorted her hands to resemble a pair of spectacles. “Maybe not,” she said as she laughed at her own silliness.

Downstairs in the pub, Lupin had arrived a little early. The place was already beginning to fill up with witches & wizards, and not a goblin was in sight, thankfully. He found himself a comfortable booth to sit in and set his worn out briefcase atop the table. Madam Rosmerta was so busy trying to keep up with the customers, she didn’t even notice him come in. Suddenly, his mind sprang back to the young barmaid he had seen the night of the goblin brouhaha – the barmaid with the eyes. He glanced around, but didn’t see her anywhere. It was a good thing, too. He had business to take care of and he didn’t want to risk being distracted. He didn’t mind that Madam Rosmerta wasn’t rushing over to serve him, either. He’d brought a couple books to look over while he waited. In addition to the one he planned to offer the “mystery student,” he also had a new one he had picked up on his last trip to Flourish & Blotts. It was called The Complete & Unabridged Guide to Lycanthropy by Dr. Osbourne Romulus. When the bookseller gave him a suspicious look upon purchasing it, he assured him it was merely a reference guide for the class he taught at Hogwarts. Little did he know, that was only part of the truth. There were still people out there who didn’t know he was a werewolf & sometimes he felt that was for the best. He opened the book to chapter one and began to read.

A few minutes before 8 o’clock, Genevieve came downstairs to the pub. She walked over to Madam Rosmerta, who was busy filling tankards with drinks for thirsty customers.

“Do you see any professors?” asked Genevieve, as she scanned the room.

“Mm-hmm,” responded Madam Rosmerta. “There are a few here tonight, actually.”

“Genevieve gave her a desperate look. “A few! Oh, no! How will I ever tell who I’m supposed to be meeting with without making a complete fool out of myself?”

“I could get everyone’s attention and you could ask that the professor you are looking for stand up,” suggested Madam Rosmerta with a wink.

Genevieve gasped. “Oh, good gracious! NO! That would far too humiliating. Please, don’t! Just point out which are the professors & I will try to narrow it down.”

Madam Rosmerta glanced around the room, and then pointed. “There’s professor Snape. He teaches Potions at the school.”

Genevieve’s eyes became like saucers as she looked at the intimidating-looking professor Rosmerta had pointed to. “They wouldn’t have sent me him, would they? He looks rather like an old sourpuss.”

Madam Rosmerta chuckled. “Something like that, dearie!” She glanced around again, and then gestured once more. “There’s Professor Lupin. He’s the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.”

Genevieve shook her head. “I don’t think so. He seems to be really into that book he’s reading. It doesn’t look like he’s waiting to meet with anyone. Who else?”

Madam Rosmerta looked to the table beside Lupin’s booth, where a very small man sat, sipping on some ale. “And that’s Professor Flitwick, teacher of Charms. Think it could be him?”

“He looks like he could be waiting for someone,” pondered Genevieve. “And he looks pleasant enough, too,” she added, glancing back for a second to where Snape was seated.

Slowly, gathering up all of her nerve, she made her way over to Professor Flitwick’s table. She cleared her throat & began to speak, “Pardon me, but I received and owl earlier this week …”

“Yes?” said Professor Flitwick curiously.

“It was about a meeting with a professor from Hogwarts – about some lessons.”

Flitwick shook his head. “I think you may have gotten the wrong message. I’m not sure what …”

“Excuse me,” a voice from the booth beside the table said, interrupting. “I think I can clear up this misunderstanding.” Professor Lupin stood up, took a few steps toward’s Flitwick’s table, but said not another word, for he suddenly stood temporarily hypnotized by those blue eyes.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART EIGHT:

Genevieve’s attention suddenly turned to the young professor dressed in tattered robes who was now standing beside Flitwick’s table. The one Madam Rosmerta had called Professor Lupin. She looked him over. Shades of gray dappled his light brown hair. At first glance, one might have dismissed him as a vagabond, judging by his rumpled appearance alone, but as she stared harder, she realized his features were far from unpleasant.

They both stood there for a moment in silence, until Flitwick finally spoke. “So, Lupin – do you know what this is all about? Can you help this young lady?”

Lupin finally found his voice. “I’m so sorry -- my deepest apologies for not being aware of the time. Please forgive me.” He gestured for her to have a seat at the booth & waited for her to sit before taking his own seat. “I’m Remus Lupin, by the way. I see my clever students told you as much about me as they told me about you!”

Genevieve laughed nervously. She was still a little thrown off by the whole mistaken identity mishap. “I guess so,” she finally managed to say.

“Do you happen to have a name?” he inquired with a smile.

Sharp mind, indeed, she thought. What an idiot he must think I am! “My name is Genevieve,” she said. She couldn’t help but think what a charming smile he had. It put her more at ease.

“So, Genevieve, I don’t know much. Miss Granger mentioned something about sharing my “vast knowledge” with you, which incidentally, I feel has been grossly overrated!”

Realizing he was trying to make a joke, Genevieve laughed again, this time without the nerves. She filled in the blanks for him, telling him about her parents and not being able to attend Hogwarts and about being a virtual disaster in muggle society. The whole time, he listened intently. There was none of the shame or disdain she thought she would experience. Instead, Professor Lupin was looking at her with compassion and concern.

As he heard her tell her story and as he looked into those mesmerizing eyes, all thoughts of handing her a book and sending her on her way began to fade.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART NINE:

After spending more time talking with Genevieve about where they would begin with the lessons, Lupin said goodbye and headed back to Hogwarts on foot. They had arranged to meet the next day to begin with some basics.

On the walk back to the school, his mind was racing a bit. Now he’d gone and done it. Could he give one sane, logical reason why he’d agreed to help Genevieve? He could rationalize that it was because he wanted to help someone “less fortunate,” as Hermoine had put it, but deep down he knew that wasn’t the truth. He had already been through all of that in his mind before he even met her. He was prepared to send her packing with The Fundamental Handbook of Magic & Sorcery, right up until the point where he saw who his “mystery student” was, that is. Once those hauntingly beautiful eyes had transfixed him, all thoughts of turning her away had evaporated.

Genevieve was back in her room at the inn, getting ready for bed, but finding herself not a bit tired. She was too excited about the possibilities that lie ahead of her now that she would be getting proper magical training under the tutelage of Professor Lupin. She had a very positive feeling about all of this, too. She had been so nervous about meeting with him, but after having met, he seemed to put her at ease. She felt very confident that she would have a great deal to learn from him & he would make the training a positive process. She wondered what her first session would consist of. She felt a little under prepared – she didn’t have a wand or a broomstick – but, she was sure Lupin was aware of this. She placed her head on her pillow, closed her eyes & hoped for sleep to come quickly so that she could begin the adventure that awaited her in the new day.

On Saturday afternoon, Lupin met Genevieve at the Three Broomsticks, where she led him to an alcove in the inn that Madam Rosmerta had reserved as a sort of library, storing her modest collection of books and manuscripts. She showed him to the small, oak table where he could set his briefcase down and at which they could sit and begin their first tutorial.

Lupin cleared his throat, fumbled through his briefcase & pulled out a worn-looking note pad. “Well …” he began, while referring to the note pad, “to define the term ‘magic,’ one could say it is ‘ the art that purports to control or forecast natural events, effects or forces by invoking the supernatural.’ But, that’s a mouthful, wouldn't you agree?”

Genevieve stared blankly at him. Her sharp mind, as Madam Rosmerta had referred to it, was feeling duller by the second.

“I’ve lost you, haven’t I?” Lupin asked apologetically. “Perhaps I should close this notebook and change my tack a bit? I’ll take the approach that works best with my students at Hogwarts.”

“And what’s that?” asked Genevieve curiously.

“Practical application, of course,” said Lupin with a whimsical smile. Genevieve gulped as Lupin went on. “For that, you’ll need some tools, so I suggest a spur of the moment shopping trip.”

“Shopping?” inquired Genevieve with a note of interest. “Here in Hogsmeade?”

“No,” said Lupin. “Hogsmeade doesn’t have everything you’ll need. I recommend Ollivander’s in Diagon Alley for the purchase of a wand. They do have the best. Of course, we could pick up a used broomstick here in the village for some basic flying, but you’ll want the finest wand you can get & I’m afraid the only place worthy is Ollivander’s.”

Genevieve trusted Lupin’s authority on this matter, but still wasn’t entirely sure how they would be getting to Diagon Alley. She couldn’t fly & certainly couldn’t apparate. He explained the benefits of using Floo powder for travel in this instance and Genevieve gulped again. She knew she had a lot to learn!

Lupin proclaimed their destination to be the Leaky Cauldron to the fireplace in Madam Rosmerta’s library alcove and before she knew it, they were spun through the ashes and flames until they finally reached their destination. Lupin stepped out into the Leaky Cauldron very calmy, but Genevieve stumbled, almost falling over. The patrons there seemed to be going around her like horses on a carousel.

Lupin led her to the secret entrance and through to Diagon Alley. There was the usual bustle as they made their way to Ollivander’s. Genevieve remembered her trip here with Madam Rosmerta from the previous summer, before she came to Hogsmeade. It was much more lively at that time, what with all of the students from Hogwarts doing their start-of-term shopping, but it was not quiet this particular day by any means. They passed by many interesting shops on their way to the wandmaker’s. Shops that sold robes, brooms, magical creatures, articles for potion making – all sorts of things you would never find in muggle London. A shop that sold gemstones, talismans and amulets caught her eye. Many trinkets & ornaments bedecked a display case in the window & Genevieve let out a murmur of delight when she saw the attractive pieces of jewelry that twinkled and shimmered to attract customers from the street. Lupin observed her interest, but continued on to Ollivander’s.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 7/25/02 3:21:32 pm

PART TEN:

Finally, the pair made their way to Ollivander’s wand shop. Lupin opened the door to the shop and showed Genevieve inside. She looked around the small place of business. There was no doubt about what was sold there – the place was wall-to-wall wands, all boxed and stored on a series of shelving units. The shelves, and wand boxes themselves for that matter, were in dire need of a good dusting, Genevieve noticed as her nose began to tickle from the particles that had freed themselves and were floating aimlessly about the room.

Within moments, Mr. Ollivander himself had emerged from the storage room at the back of the shop to assist his customers.

“Why, Remus Lupin!” said Ollivander, with an ounce or two of surprise in his voice. “Fancy seeing you in my shop, after all of these years! Not having problems with your wand, are you?”

“Not at all,” replied Lupin. “I’ve brought this young lady here to purchase a wand.”

“Mishap with your last wand, eh? Some of those fly-by-night manufacturers can’t be trusted to make a quality wand,” he said, with a slight air of superiority in his voice. “Who was the wandmaker of your last one, my dear – if you don’t mind my asking?”

“There is no last wand, sir,” Genevieve said meekly. “This will actually be my first wand.”

“I see,” said Ollivander, understandingly. “Let me pick out a few and we’ll get started.”

Ollivander brought down several boxes and Genevieve waved them about obediently until they found one that settled on her – an 8 ¼ inch sandalwood and peacock feather.

“Hmm,” nodded Ollivander, knowingly. “Brilliant wand & very elegant, too. Made of this fine, golden heartwood and one stunning plume off of a very proud peafowl I met while I was in India. She was good enough to give me several feathers – all producing excellent wands, by the way.” He picked up the box and caught a whiff of the wand and beamed. “And ever so aromatic, as well.”

Genevieve had already noticed the hint of perfume that the wand was emitting as soon as Ollivander had opened the box for her to try it out. “Very pleasant,” she said. Lupin nodded in agreement.

“Another satisfied custumer,” said Ollivander blissfully. “That’ll be seven gold galleons, if you please.”

Genevieve took a tiny, indigo-colored pouch out of her cloak, opened it & sorted through the coins that were inside. She promptly counted out seven galleons, incidentally, the last seven galleons she had in her possession, and handed them to Ollivander. She cinched up the cord to close the pouch, noticing how much lighter it felt with only a few bronze knuts and a couple silver sickles left inside.

Though she was very pleased with her brand-new wand, Genevieve couldn’t help but feel regretful that she wasn’t able to browse around the other shops in Diagon Alley to pick up some other things. She did have enough left for a used broomstick from the second-hand shop in Hogsmeade, and she told herself she’d be able to buy more later – after she had put away some more money from working at the Three Broomsticks.

She & Lupin walked back to the Leaky Cauldron, talking about some of the standard spells and charms they would be able to try out, now that she had her new wand.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

Part Eleven

Post by bistyboo1974 »

PART ELEVEN:

When Lupin and Genevieve arrived back in Hogsmeade, they made a trip to the second-hand shop in the village where she was able to by a used broomstick that would be good enough, for the time being, while she was learning to fly.

After an eventful afternoon shopping in both Diagon Alley and in Hogsmeade, Lupin suggested they put off any attempts at any basic spells or charms until the next day. Instead, they made a decision to have dinner at the Three Broomsticks. Madam Rosmerta had offered to bring some food to them up in the library alcove, so they could dine away from the hustle and bustle of the pub.

As they ate, they talked, mostly about what it was like for Genevieve growing up. She told Lupin that her childhood had been a pleasant one – she enjoyed music and painting in the muggle school that she attended. She admitted that she would have been content to live her life painting portraits or teaching piano lessons, but the magical abilities within her had begun to surface and any delusions that she could live like other muggles were swept away.

Lupin asked her what kinds of things she liked to paint. Genevieve smiled as she remembered some of the work she had done as a youth. “I did a really nice likeness of our pet bulldog, once,” she said, with some amusement. “I always enjoyed painting animals and wildlife. I also did a rendering of my parents when I was about 15. I think it hung in their parlor for a while, but last time I visited them, it was moved.” She sighed & looked up from her dinner plate and across the table to Lupin. “Now, I’ve told you about my childhood – what about yours?” She had a twinkle in her blue eyes – the one that Lupin found hard to resist. But, he knew he had to resist telling her everything about his childhood.

He told her bits and pieces of the truth. About attending Hogwarts, being friends with Harry’s father – but he left out a few details. Details like being bitten by a werewolf as a child, transforming at the Shrieking Shack once a month during the full moon, and having friends who were animagi. He thought his version of what Hogwarts was like (minus those tricky little details, including Marauder’s Maps and Whomping Willows) must have sounded extremely dull to Genevieve, but instead she listened to him as if he were telling the most interesting account ever told! Even minus those facts that he had decided to withhold, Hogwarts sounded like an especially delightful place – much more fascinating than the school she had attended.

When they had finished eating & Madam Rosmerta had reappeared to collect their dishes, Lupin had decided it was time to return to Hogwarts for the evening. He bid both Genevieve and Madam Rosmerta a good night and headed back to the school. When he had gone, Rosmerta asked Gen how her first day had gone.

“It went well. Very well. I like Professor Lupin a lot,” said Genevieve.

“He seems to enjoy you, as well,” said Madam Rosmerta, with a mischievous smile dancing across her lips.

“And what’s that supposed to mean?” asked Genevieve defensively and blushing just a bit.

“I notice the way he looks at you – like you’re the only person around for miles! He just seems to tune everyone else out,” said Madam Rosmerta. “And this evening, while you were eating dinner together, he looked more content than I have ever seen him before! Why, he looked downright happy, to me.”

“And what does he have to be unhappy about?” inquired Genevieve. “Just because he seemed happy doesn’t necessarily mean I was the cause of his happiness!”

Madam Rosmerta thought for a moment. She hadn’t really considered that Genevieve didn’t know everything about Lupin, but now it was fast becoming clear that she indeed did not. Or else she would have known why Lupin might have cause not to be happy.

“Don’t sell yourself short, my dear,” Madam Rosmerta finally said calmly. “Most of the wizards and warlocks that come into my pub would give their right arms to win your affections, but let me tell you this – not a handful of them would be half as worthy a man as Remus Lupin is. You just remember that!” She walked back down to the pub and left Genevieve to ponder what she had said.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

Author's Note: This is something I had intended to write into the story, but it kind of got pushed aside because it was kind of a little substory in & of itself. I wanted to explain why Genevieve's wand had a peacock feather instead of the standard phoneix feather, unicorn hair or dragon heartstring that Ollivander usually uses in his wands. I believe I mentioned that he aquired the feather on a trip to India -- the little substory was that Ollivander had recently taken this trip to Asia & had found 3 new ingredients for his wands -- peacock feather, tiger hair & Chinese dragon heartstring. The peacock & tiger had mystical qualities that muggles aren't aware of (making them good candidates for usage in wands). All of this kind of got edited out because I felt that I was wandering away from the real story I was trying to tell, but I wanted to leave in the wand that chose Genevieve (which was made from these "new" Asian elements). Therefore, that is why I added this little "author's note." <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Now, on with the story!

**********************************************

PART TWELVE:

Genevieve sat down on the edge of her bed, feeling downright frustrated by what Madam Rosmerta had said. But, in the back of her mind, the slightest fragment of a spark seemed to ignite. It was just a glimmer of an idea, but Genevieve had the sensation that what Madam Rosmerta had said might not have been untrue. If that were the case, how did she feel about it? How did she feel about Professor Lupin? Well, she definitely felt admiration towards the man – he was going above and beyond the call of duty to help her. She also felt perfectly comfortable around him – she could talk to him & share things with him that she felt embarrassed sharing with anyone else, but the thought of him in any romantic way hadn’t really crossed her mind before. But, why hadn’t it? He was an attractive person, when you looked beyond his frayed wardrobe – but that was a plus in it’s own right, wasn’t it? It showed that he didn’t seem to focus on the materialistic aspect of things. But, why not have it cross her mind that a young, single, handsome professor might be attracted to her?

She knew exactly why. The answer was in the way she felt about herself. She couldn’t find the attractiveness in herself, so how could she expect anyone else to be able to? Her self-esteem seemed to be so low all of her life. She grew up only knowing that she was different – her unusualness followed her everywhere she went. It was the only characteristic of herself that she acknowledged – in her mind, she was this one-dimensional creature, an oddity no matter where she was. She didn’t bother to notice that she had talent, beauty, and intelligence. Those things were overshadowed by the continuing dilemma of where in life would she ever fit in?

But, Madam Rosmerta was continually telling her not to sell herself short. Harry, Ron & Hermione had encouraged her and now, according to Rosmerta, Professor Lupin was noticing her for more than just her differences. But, what if Madam Rosmerta was imagining things? Was it possible that she was reading more into things than what was really there? There was only one thing Genevieve had left to do & that was wait for the following day, when she could use her new awareness to try and figure things out on her own.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 7/29/02 3:06:06 pm

PART THIRTEEN:

Genevieve readied herself that morning for her first day of real lessons. She used some lemon oil to polish the old Shooting Star she had picked up the day before at the second-hand shop and made sure her brand-new wand was tucked away safely in its box. She nibbled on a piece of buttered toast that she had brought up for breakfast – she didn’t think she could eat anything else. It felt as if there were about a thousand and one butterflies flitting about inside her stomach at the moment. She had new anxieties today. She had barely even thought about the lessons – 24 hours ago she was worried she’d accidentally scorch her eyebrows off or turn Professor Lupin into a toad or something else equally as devastating, but today her mind was filled with Madam Rosmerta’s comments & that wickedly mischievous smile of hers when she said, “He seems to enjoy you as well.”

Good gracious, she thought as she took the last bite of toast. I feel like I’m 16 years old again. She caught herself blushing in the mirror. Get a grip, girl! Pull yourself together! He’ll be here in –

There was a knock on the door. Genevieve sent her plate flying; the rapping at the door had startled her that badly. The dish landed with a clatter on the wood floor & Genevieve hurried to answer the knock. As she opened the door, she was relieved to discover it was Madam Rosmerta, but that relief soon faded.

“Your teacher is waiting for you in the pub, dear,” she said with an impish wink. “Shall I tell him you’ll be right down?”

Genevieve gulped. “Um, yes – let me just get my wand and my broom, then I’ll be down.”

Rosmerta nodded & grinned, then turned to relay the message.

I need to relax, Genevieve told herself. Calm down – deep breathing. He’s here to give you magic lessons, not to propose marriage, as Madam Rosmerta would have it! She laughed, knowing she was blowing everything out of proportion, as usual. If she went down there acting all flustered, he’d be sure to think she’d been practicing magic last night & put some sort of giddiness charm on herself by accident. She grabbed her wand and broomstick and started slowly for the pub downstairs.

She didn’t trip over her own feet or anything as she descended the stairs that led to the pub below, but she did find herself looking at Lupin, who was sitting with his beat-up old briefcase at a table near the bar, in a completely different light. He’s certainly not unpleasant to look at, she thought, as she noticed a stray strand of his light brown hair dangling in his eyes. He seemed to notice it, too, as he brushed it back into place with his hand – then he noticed Genevieve as she entered the room. He smiled, looking pleased to see her.

They greeted one another & Genevieve thought that there must have been an eternity of awkward silence that followed, until Madam Rosmerta scampered out of the backroom towards them, with a package wrapped in plain, brown paper in her hand. Genevieve’s butterflies started flitting again as she secretly hoped Rosmerta would refrain from any embarrassing comments, especially right there in front of Lupin.

“I have something for you before you go, Gen,” she said quickly. “I was going to give it to you yesterday, but the girl at the shop hadn’t finished with it yet. Anyhow, go ahead and open it!” She handed the package to Genevieve, who looked totally baffled at this point.

“What could this be?” she asked as she tore the brown paper away. Her question was answered as she held up a beautiful set of robes, made of a lovely midnight-blue material. Her face turned red & she hugged Madam Rosmerta in thanks for the wonderful gift.

“Well,” Madam Rosmerta started, “I knew you didn’t have a suitable set of robes and with you starting to learn magic and all, you’ll need them.” She smiled at Genevieve & patted her shoulder affectionately. “Go ahead and put them on.”

Genevieve slipped her arms into the comfortable sleeves & fastened the silver clasp at the collar, then picked up her wandbox and broomstick and asked, “How do I look?”

Madam Rosmerta clasped her hands together & gave an approving look. Genevieve glanced over to Lupin, who stared at her admiringly. This caused her face to flush yet again, so she thanked Rosmerta once more & asked Lupin where their lessons would be that day.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 7/30/02 2:05:37 pm

PART FOURTEEN:

Lupin had decided to take their lessons outside that morning. They walked out into the village, up the High Street and settled quite near the spot where Genevieve sat and talked to Harry, Ron and Hermione on the day they had met. She was thinking how fortunate it was that she had a new set of robes on, for it was rather brisk that morning.

For about an hour and a half, Genevieve and Lupin worked with their wands. First, she got comfortable holding it and once she got the feel of it, he taught her several simple charms and spells, all of which she had pretty decent luck with. She had even been able to levitate her feather longer than he had his, but she suspected she had distracted him when she sneezed (his feather had come precariously close to her nose after she’d commented that she thought he had a fantastic teaching technique). After attempting to transfigure a cottonball into a marshmallow, Lupin decided it was time to move on to some basic flying skills.

He taught her how to beckon the broomstick and mount it, but Genevieve didn’t get past the first step. She realized, once the broom came flying into her hand, that she had put entirely too much lemon oil on the old thing. Instead of being able to mount it correctly at that point, it slipped right out of her hand and hovered a few inches off the ground, looking as perturbed as a broomstick can possibly look.

Genevieve turned three or four different shades of scarlet. “That’s probably not what you had in mind, was it?” she asked Lupin sheepishly.

“Not exactly,” Lupin said, trying hard not to laugh. “Let me see this for a moment.” He tried to grab her broomstick, but before he could, it dodged quickly out of his reach, hovering about a foot above where he could grab it.

“ Accio!” he shouted forcefully, as the broomstick feebly gave up the fight & flew into his hands.

Much impressed, Genevieve watched as he took his wand out, mumbled a few words she didn’t recognize, then handed the broomstick back to her. The oily feeling had left the handle and it now only felt slick and smooth.

“Let’s try that again, shall we?” he suggested. Genevieve nodded, then proceeded with the steps he had instructed earlier. Once she had mounted it, this time without incident, he suggested she kick off from the ground ever so lightly and float around above the field for a few moments. She nervously did as he said – she’d never been comfortable with heights before, but the old Shooting Star wasn’t going very high at all. And speed obviously wasn’t going to be a factor – the broomstick certainly didn’t feel the need to get anywhere swiftly.

Eventually, the broomstick was cooperative enough to allow her to go a little higher and a little faster than her first attempt. Lupin had mounted his own broomstick and they hovered together above the field . Genevieve wasn’t sure what had possessed her at that point, especially since she was sure she owned the slowest broomstick ever made, but she blurted it out before common sense or anything else could stop her.

“Race you!” she challenged at the top of her lungs. She charged forward on her broomstick, trying to accelerate at a rapid pace. Her intentions were good, but she was almost positive she heard the broom wheeze as she encouraged it to increase speed. She looked up to see Lupin hovering over at the other end of the field, laughing non stop. He sped back to where she and her sputtering broomstick were & flew a lap or two around her, grinning uncontrollably.

Genevieve grudgingly smiled back. “Guess I’d better not try any more contests with you!”

“At least not until you find yourself a speedier model racing broom,” he said, still chuckling. At this point, Genevieve was sure her broomstick had a mind of it’s own as it seemed to let out a sniff of disapproval at his comment about it’s lack of capabilities.

“I heartily agree with you,” she replied, ignoring the broom’s bad attitude.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 7/30/02 3:37:51 pm
