PART FIFTEEN:

Genevieve found that the following week was dragging by very slowly. On Wednesday, she got an owl from Hermione.

Dear Genevieve,

How did the lessons go? We didn’t get a chance to ask Professor Lupin, but he seemed in very good spirits in class this week.

Hope all went well. Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Your friend,
Hermione

Genevieve grabbed her quill and began to write out a reply.

Dear Hermione,

The lessons went well. Thanks for asking. I now am now the proud owner of a wand, broomstick and even a new set of robes, thanks to Madam Rosmerta! I know a few very simple charms and spells, and seemed to have mastered the basic techniques involved in flying.

I am very much indebted to you and your friends for sending me such a good teacher.

With affection,
Genevieve

She attached the letter to the leg of the barn owl who had delivered it and sent it on its way. The owl let out a raspy screech as it stuffed its body out of Genevieve’s window, obviously as agitated about the tiny outlet as Hedwig had been.

Thursday seemed to tick by as if the hands on the clock were going backwards instead of forwards, and Friday oozed by like molasses. When Saturday finally arrived, Genevieve was waking every hour from 3 AM on. At 7 AM, she decided to crawl out of bed.

Later that morning, she & Lupin tried some more challenging charms and spells, a few basic transfigurations and potions, then traveled back to the field area at the edge of the village for more flying practice.

On Sunday, Genevieve learned the rudiments of basic herbology. Feeling secure that she couldn’t take in any more information on the subject of plants and vegetation that particular day, Lupin proposed a break was in order.

“There’s something I need to tell you,” Lupin said quietly.

Genevieve nodded, wondering what he was going to say. He sounded very serious. He surely wasn’t about to make a declaration of his feelings, was he? Not that the idea of that sounded exactly bad to her at this point, she thought quickly as she looked over at his solemn face.

Lupin went on. “I won’t be around this week, so I think we need to cancel lessons for next weekend. I won’t be gone long – just until things are, uh … back to normal.”

Genevieve looked slightly caught off guard. “Oh, I hope there’s nothing wrong,” she said with a concerned look on her face. “You said you’d be leaving. You’re not ill, are you?” She looked a little harder at him and noticed how weary he seemed to be. There were dark circles under his eyes and she wondered why she hadn’t noticed this before.

Lupin thought up an old lie to tell her. “No, my mother’s been ailing and I need to take care of her for a while, but I won’t be gone long,” he assured Genevieve.

But somehow, his words of reassurance only left Genevieve feeling more doubtful that all was well.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART SIXTEEN:

As the next week began, Genevieve couldn’t help but worry about Lupin. He’d looked so exhausted the last time she had seen him. She wondered how serious his mother’s illness was. It must have been severe, considering how fatigued Lupin had looked. He was obviously making himself sick with distress over her condition. She thought of perhaps sending him an owl, just to ask how things were.

She never made it to the post office to send the owl, however her preoccupation with Lupin continued. On Tuesday night, Genevieve tossed and turned in bed, and found it impossible to get to sleep. Finally, tired of laying their wide-awake, she decided to go out for some fresh air. She pulled her new robes on over her nightdress, grabbed her broomstick and crept downstairs as quietly as she could.

As she stepped out of the Three Broomsticks and into the street, she became bathed in a soft, pale light. She glanced up to see the moon, full and bright, reflecting light upon the village. An odd feeling came over her without warning; a strangely familiar feeling, then just as suddenly as it had come, it was gone. She strolled down the street, not even noticing the chill that was in the air. The air that night was very cool; there wasn’t even a cloud in the sky to blanket the village from the coldness. She paid no attention to the bitterness around her, or to the fact that she had walked up the slope past the inn, right towards the Shrieking Shack. Abruptly, she stopped and realized where she was. A shiver ran down her spine and she felt sure that it had not been induced by the weather. A creaky moan sounded from the boards on the old house and Genevieve leapt back, frightened. She turned around and started walking back towards home, but decided a few paces later (after she’d heard the distant howl of a wolf) that she’d feel better riding on her broomstick.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART SEVENTEEN:

Lupin returned about a week later. He sent Genevieve an owl letting her know to expect her lessons to resume on the last day of the month. He spoke little of his trip when they met that day. Genevieve was curious about his mother’s health, but he only said, “She’s better, for now” and went back to the new enchantment he was showing her. Genevieve didn’t press the matter.

With December came much colder temperatures. Their lessons were always held in the library alcove now and all flying practice was put off until warmer weather would permit. Genevieve was fast becoming very proficient in all things magic, much to her own amazement and much to the satisfaction of her teacher.

Two Sundays before Christmas, however, Lupin found he had to break it to Genevieve that he needed to leave yet again. He told her that his mother’s condition had worsened once more.

Saddened that Lupin had left again and wishing she could get him to share whatever anguish he was obviously feeling over whatever it was that his mother was going through (again, he looked frightful the day he said he was leaving), Genevieve spent her free time helping Madam Rosmerta at the pub.

The first snow of the season had fallen three days after Lupin had gone and Genevieve caught herself yearning that he was there so they could go out and walk through it. She’d always loved the snow, ever since she was a little girl, and she found herself wanting to share that with him.

She was delightfully surprised the weekend before Christmas, however. Hogwarts students were given another trip into Hogsmeade and she was able to visit with Harry, Ron and Hermione once again. She hadn’t seen them since Halloween, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Genevieve and the trio planned a day of holiday shopping in the village stores. They found all sorts of trinkets and treasures for the people on their list. Hermione had even managed to slip away for a while to pick up something for Genevieve, which she left in Madam Rosmerta’s temporary possession at the pub until they could return. Genevieve enlisted their advice on which briefcase they thought Professor Lupin might like from Dervish & Banges. She settled on a simple brown leather one, which had a handy wand-holder attachment on the inside. She asked the assistant at the shop to add the engraving “Professor R.J. Lupin” on the small brass plate on the outside of the case, which he did with the flick of his wand.

Pleased with all of their purchases, they made their way back to the Three Broomsticks to relax over butterbeers and catch up on the past two months. After they had finished their drinks & talked for a while, Hermione walked quickly to the backroom of the pub and returned holding a small bundle of fur. She set the little furball down on their table in front of Genevieve, who was smiling with glee. A tiny kitten, with a handsome tortoise-shell coat, sat there looking at her through big, copper-colored eyes.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART EIGHTEEN:

Genevieve’s face was beaming with delight. “He’s the most precious cat I’ve ever seen!” The little kitten nuzzled her arm and purred.

“What are you going to call him?” asked Harry.

“I’m not sure,” admitted Genevieve. “Any suggestions?”

“The witch at the shop called him Morpheus,” commented Hermione.

“That’s an awfully big name for such a small cat,” said Ron, as the tiny kitten disappeared behind the empty butterbeer pitcher.

“Still, if that’s his name, I wouldn’t feel right changing it,” said Genevieve. “Right, Morpheus?” She looked down at her new pet. He had just begun to lick the fur on his front paws clean, but when he heard his name, he stopped & looked up at her knowingly. “Morpheus it is, then!” she said proudly.

They watched Morpheus play a while longer. He had succeeded in charming a group of girls from Ravenclaw into ordering a saucer of warm cream for him.

“What a little scamp!” laughed Genevieve, as he lapped up his reward.

Hermione started to speak, this time changing the subject. “I think Professor Lupin will like the Christmas gift you bought for him.”

“So do I,” agreed Harry. “I think he’s probably had the other one for ages.”

“Yeah, that old thing looks as though a wild animal’s gotten a hold of it a few times,” added Ron carelessly.

Both Harry & Hermione looked at him as though he’d caught on fire.

“What??” asked Ron obliviously. He was puzzled for a moment as their scowls were bearing down on him. Glancing over towards Genevieve, who was also looking rather confused, he finally broke out into a nervous laugh and said, “Not as if it had, mind you!”

Harry and Hermione rolled their eyes and Ron gave them an apologetic grin.

**********************************************
AUTHOR'S NOTE: I went on the hunt for a cat name last night. I found a site claiming to have "magical" cat names & I picked "Morpheus" from the Greek Mythology section. Here's what they said about the name: MORPHEUS (More'-Fee-Us; Male): Son of HYPNOS, and god of dreams, as well as the source for the word Morphine. Since dreams are an entire world unto themselves, Morpheus is something like a king, and a mighty one at that. Another obvious name for a night cat.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART NINETEEN:

After Harry, Ron and Hermione had said goodbye and extended their wishes for a happy Christmas, and after Genevieve had loaded them down with almost more sweets than they could carry, she and Morpheus settled down for a quiet evening at the inn.

Genevieve wrapped Lupin’s Christmas gift with care and set it on the shelf in her closet. I hope I get a chance to give it to before Christmas passes, she thought with a sigh. She looked over to the end of her bed & saw Morpheus curled up into a ball, fast asleep. She sat down beside him and wondered when Lupin would return this time.

The next few days went by like a blur. The days leading up to Christmas were bubbling with excitement in Hogsmeade – the villagers buzzed around like bees getting prepared for the holiday. The Three Broomsticks stayed steadily busy, so therefore Genevieve did as well.

When Christmas morning finally did arrive, Genevieve was almost too tired to get out of bed. She was finally coaxed up by Morpheus’ sandpapery tongue that was extending a good morning greeting to her nose.

“Happy Christmas to you, too,” she told him, patting his head gently.

They made their way downstairs, where Madam Rosmerta welcomed them with a hug. After giving Morpheus a generous helping of buttermilk, she and Genevieve exchanged gifts – a pair of gloves for Madam Rosmerta that she had been eyeing for about a month and a silver hair comb for Genevieve. They talked for a while as they finished breakfast and Genevieve noticed that Morpheus had pranced across the pub to peer out the window at the empty street. He sat calmly in the sill for a few minutes, as the ladies’ conversation continued, but suddenly became excited as he spotted a figure walking towards the door. He mewed as loudly as he could to announce the person, but they hadn’t heard him. The clanging of the bell above the door as it opened caught their attention, however.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 8/2/02 3:33:44 pm

PART TWENTY:

Remus Lupin entered the pub, followed by a flurry of snow. He closed the door quickly and stood silently for a moment, realizing that perhaps he should have knocked before bounding in unannounced as he just did.

Madam Rosmerta hopped up from her seat and gave him a hearty “Happy Christmas,” and offered him a seat beside Genevieve, then before anyone could object, she’d hurried off to the backroom to prepare some hot tea, apparently to warm him up, as he was still shivering slightly from the cold outside.

Genevieve sat beside him, her cheeks flushed. It was somewhat of a surprise to see him there so suddenly. “I’ve missed you,” she said before she could stop herself.

“Missed me?” Lupin asked, somewhat in disbelief.

“I mean, I’ve missed our lessons,” said Genevieve awkwardly, trying to cover up her impetuous comment. Her face reddened even deeper.

Lupin’s eyes brightened just a bit. He was pleased to realize that she had missed him, even though she didn’t seem quite ready to admit it. He reached inside his cloak and pulled out a small trinket box. It was a plain wooden box, except for a small intricate carving on the lid.

“For you,” he said, as he handed Genevieve the box. “Happy Christmas,” he said softly.

She took the box from him, her cheeks just as red as ever. She could barely stutter a thank-you as she held the box in her hands, admiring its simple elegance.

“Open it,” Lupin advised.

Genevieve gently lifted the lid and gasped as she beheld what was inside. From the box, she removed a beautiful pendant – a gorgeous, milky moonstone dangling from a sparkling silver chain.

Words were escaping her at the moment, but Lupin could read the happiness on her face as she admired the lovely piece of jewelry. When she finally found her voice, she thanked him.

“I’ve never had anything so wonderful in all my life,” she told him sincerely. “You’re so thoughtful,” she added and gave him a tender hug.

Now, it was Lupin who was flushing. “I knew you would like it. When I saw it, I thought of you right away.” He helped her fasten the clasp on the chain and admired the beauty of the stone on the more beautiful young woman who wore it.

“I have something for you, too,” Genevieve said, suddenly remembering the gift she had stowed away in her closet for him. “I’ll just be a minute.” She clambered up the stairs quickly, as Madam Rosmerta came from the back room clutching a tray of steaming tea.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART TWENTY-TWO:

In my whole life, Genevieve thought later that night, I don’t think I’ve ever had a better Christmas! She brought her hand to her neck, found the pendant and held it in her hand for an instant, then gazed at it sweetly. The stone was luminous. She caught the lamplight over its smooth surface and it hypnotized her for a moment. And he had truly liked her gift, too. She was afraid he wouldn’t, but she felt sure that indeed he did.

Later in the day, she had talked him into taking a short walk outside through the snow. It was truly a delightful day. They crunched their way through the snowy High Street and she reminisced about the times she spent as a youngster frolicking in the wintertime, making snow angels and having snowball fights with the neighbors.

That evening, they ate dinner with Madam Rosmerta, talked for a while near the soft, warm glow of the fireside and reluctantly called it a day after a couple of hours. They bid farewell on the doorstep of the Three Broomsticks, where Lupin gently kissed her cheek goodnight and thanked her for the wonderful day.

She smiled at the pleasant memory. If every day could be like that, I’d live a truly content life, she thought.

Genevieve was very content, at least for the next few weeks or so. Until, that is, Lupin announced another departure. He left again in mid-January and Genevieve tried to accept his going without difficulty or stress, but it wasn’t an easy task.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART TWENTY-THREE:

Something kept gnawing at the back of Genevieve’s mind. There was this idea that something just wasn’t right. She kept pushing the idea away; not wanting to have to face that there could be something wrong, but still – there it was. And now that Lupin had gone away yet again – now the nagging thoughts were more persistent. Now she found it very difficult to quiet them.

He had left three times now and each time with the claim that his mother was ill, yet he never talked about her when he was around. Each time he’d left, he had always looked ill himself. At first, she excused this as due to his worry over his mother’s condition, but she was suddenly rethinking this. Was it he who was sick and not his mother after all? If so, then why hadn’t he told her? And why wasn’t he always sick?

She couldn’t help but think of these questions. She wanted to go on blissfully as if everything was all right, but she didn’t know if that was even possible. She didn’t feel like she knew anything anymore.

She took out a small calendar printed on parchment and turned to the month of November and circled the dates Lupin had been away that month. She did the same for the month of December, then looked at January on her current calendar and circled the dates he had been gone so far this time. There was one glaring, obvious similarity between all three months. During the weeks that Lupin had been absent, the same occurrence had taken place, according to her calendars – the full moon.

But, what did that mean about Lupin? Looking ill and leaving around the time of the full moon each month? One thing had crossed her mind the moment she’d noticed this, but it was so absurd, she didn’t feel like the idea even deserved an ounce of merit. Still, she’d look into it, and then have a good laugh at herself when she could dismiss it. She shuffled through a stack of books Hermione had loaned her – there was one book in particular she felt would be helpful in dismissing her absurd thought. There it was – a book called Dangerous Creatures: Vampires, Werewolves & Other Beasts To Avoid While You’re Walking Alone At Night. Slowly, she turned to the chapter called Werewolves: Maniacal Men Transformed By The Moon. She read about how a person who is bitten by a werewolf is cursed to become one himself; how that person tears away his own clothing before a transformation and must remember where the clothing is in order to be transformed back into a human. Genevieve’s mind flashed to an image of Lupin, dressed in tattered wizard’s robes. Her palms began to sweat a bit, but she read on. Transformations, it said, are quite a slow, painful process, leaving the one being transformed feeling as though his skin is being set on fire and torn apart. Genevieve gasped in horror at the very thought of such a terrible experience. She glanced down to a paragraph entitled “Werewolf Allergies: How To Destroy The Beast” and read about silver and wolfsbane. Genevieve breathed a great sigh of relief. Werewolves, it seemed, are allergic to silver. She touched the silver chain that held her pendant. Surely Lupin wouldn’t have given her a gift made of silver had he been a werewolf. She laughed as she tried to further put her mind at ease, but she read a bit more and realized it perhaps wasn’t as simple as she first thought it would be. Silver, the book said, only kills a werewolf in great doses, though it will leave a mark on the skin of a werewolf in human form, if simply touched. Lupin had helped her with the clasp of the necklace on Christmas. Had it left a mark on his hands? Genevieve hadn’t a clue. It wasn’t as if she regularly went around checking to see if people were werewolves or not.

All the facts, however, seemed to be pointing in one general direction – Remus Lupin, the man whom she’d grown to admire, trust and care for, was a werewolf. A “dangerous beast,” according to Hermione’s book, “who preys upon humans.” A shiver tingled in her spine. But, that’s where things didn’t make sense to her. How could such a man as she knew Lupin to be also be a monster?

**********************************************

AUTHOR'S NOTE: I gathered most of my werewolf info from a site called The Werewolf Registry <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 8/3/02 5:54:44 pm

PART TWENTY-FOUR:

Who else knew? This new question suddenly popped into her head. She couldn’t possibly be the only one who had figured things out. She thought of Harry, Hermione and Ron. She suspected they knew, for she remembered Ron’s odd comment he’d made about Lupin’s old briefcase right before Christmas. “The old thing looks as though a wild animal’s gotten a hold of it a few times,” Ron had said. She hadn’t any idea why Harry and Hermione had reacted strangely to this comment at the time, but now she reckoned it was because they knew. But, how could they not have told her if they knew? She supposed they were most likely aware of what her reaction would have been had they told her the truth.

And what about Madam Rosmerta? Somehow, she got the distinct impression that she knew more than she let on, as well. But, how could they all know the truth and still feel comfortable around someone who was – well, part monster? She closed her eyes and pictured Lupin. She saw nothing of the monster there. She saw only the Lupin she knew; the Lupin she had grown to care deeply for. He was certainly not monstrous.

Although it was late, Genevieve left her room to see if Madam Rosmerta was still awake. With any luck, she’d find her beside the fire, reading the latest edition of Witch Weekly and sipping some herbal tea. She had to talk to someone and besides that, she wanted to know if Madam Rosmerta knew about Lupin or not.

Her prediction about finding Madam Rosmerta beside the fire wasn’t too far off. There she sat, in a maroon-colored wing chair beside the hearth, fast asleep and still clutching an empty teacup. A copy of The Daily Prophet, however, lay across her lap.

Not wanting to wake her, Genevieve turned around to head back up to her room, but the crashing of the teacup to the hardwood floor below stopped her and awoke the sleeping Madam Rosmerta.

“Oh, my,” she said, extremely startled. She looked down at the broken teacup and shook her head. “I’ve done that so many times, I do believe I’ve lost count.” She pulled her wand out of her apron pocket, mended the cup with a quick spell, then picked it up to check out her own handiwork. “Hmm, nicer color in the porcelain this time, if I do say so myself.” She glanced over to Genevieve, who wasn’t sure whether she wanted to stay or go at this point. “Did you come down to see me, dear?” she asked, followed by a yawn. “My goodness! What time is it?”

“It’s late,” said Genevieve. “And I did come down hoping to find you awake. I wanted to talk with you about something.”

“Well, I’m awake now, love. You can talk.” She patted the footstool near her chair for Genevieve to sit and join her.

Genevieve sat down and Madam Rosmerta noticed the solemn look on her face. “What’s vexing you, Gen? You look absolutely troubled.”

“I want you to tell me the truth,” she said quietly. “I know you will. I trust you.” She looked up at Rosmerta’s matronly face, her blue eyes pleading for honesty from the older woman.

“Of course,” she replied. “I wouldn’t ever lie to you.”

“No,” said Genevieve quickly. “But you’d keep something from me, wouldn’t you?”

All of a sudden, Madam Rosmerta realized what Genevieve meant. “This is about Lupin, isn’t it?

“Why didn’t you tell me?” begged Genevieve, nearly sobbing.

“It wasn’t for me to tell,” said Madam Rosmerta, trying desperately to comfort her.

“And you’re – OK with it?” asked Genevieve, tears starting to well up in her brilliantly blue eyes. “The knowledge that he is a werewolf doesn’t bother you in the least?” She nearly choked on the word as she said it.

“It’s not that black and white, my dear,” said Madam Rosmerta softly. “You can’t sit there and judge the man solely based on that alone. Not you, Genevieve. You know there’s much more to him than that! You, of all people, should know better than to judge a person because he or she is different!”

“This is not the same thing,” snapped Genevieve. As she buried her face in her trembling hands and began to cry, she ran back up the staircase to her room.

Madam Rosmerta sat by the fire, watching the embers slowly die out and thinking to herself, I hope that girl can find a way to use her heart and not her eyes to navigate the darkness.

**********************************************
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Apparently, Madam Rosmerta is a fan of one of my favorite bands, Hoobastank. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> She quotes one of their songs (Crawling in the Dark) in her last line in part 24.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 8/3/02 5:56:49 pm
