She knocked on the door to her room and listened for a response. There was only silence. She knocked again and when she still heard no sign of life in the room, she tried the door handle.

Slowly, she opened the door, only to discover an empty room. Most of Genevieve’s limited possessions were gone. However, her wand, broomstick and new robes lay in a neat stack on the bed. Rosmerta looked over the room carefully, hoping to find some sort of note, but she never did.

A world away, or so it seemed, Genevieve was standing on the front porch of a modest little house, just outside of London. She had with her a small bag and her kitten, Morpheus, who was examining his new surroundings with the utmost scrutiny. She gripped the solid brass doorknocker and thumped on the door gently. A few moments later, the door swung open and the surprised face of a middle-aged woman greeted her.

“Oh, my!” the woman said, in utter shock at seeing Genevieve standing there before her. “I can’t believe you’re here! It’s been ages!” The woman embraced her into a tight squeeze.

“It’s good to see you, too, Mum,” Genevieve said, hugging her mother back. “I don’t suppose you & Dad would care for a houseguest for a little while, would you?” she asked coyly.

“Don’t you dare give it a second thought,” her mother said. “You know you’re always welcome here. This is your home. This is where you belong.” She emphasized the last word heavily as she led her daughter into the house. “Your father’s at work right now, of course, but he’ll be absolutely beside himself when he gets here and realizes you’re here! We’ve both missed you terribly, Genevieve!”

After her mother had seen to it that she and Morpheus had been properly fed, Genevieve took her bag up to her old bedroom on the second floor. She sat down on her old, twin-sized canopy bed. Morpheus batted the lacy dust ruffle around the edge of the bed with his paw and Genevieve laid back on the large, goosedown pillow, thinking to herself that she’d never felt more miserable in her entire life.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART TWENTY-SIX:

Genevieve decided it was time to unpack her belongings from her bag. Her father would be home from the office soon and there would be more of what she had experienced with her mother when he arrived. She supposed it would be best to get the unpacking done before the lull had subsided.

Unpacking such a small bag didn’t take long. She was able to fit its entire contents in the top drawer of her old bureau easily and with room to spare. When she had gotten to the bottom of the bag, she paused. It took a moment for her to muster up the courage to reach in and retrieve the little, wooden trinket box from the deepest part of the bag. But, she finally picked it up, then delicately removed the lid and gazed in at the moonstone pendant that lay nestled inside.

She wanted to put it on - to feel the smooth, cool stone resting against her skin. She picked it up and held it against her cheek and remembered what it had been like before … before her world had been turned upside down. She fastened the clasp and smoothed out the chain. She looked at herself in the mirror and heard the echo of her mother’s voice in her head – “This is where you belong.” But, her heart cried out in a much louder voice, “NO!”

As anticipated, her father’s arrival home and his reaction to her being there was every bit as energetic as her mother’s had been. When they sat down for dinner, she was supplied with an endless list of reasons why she was better off at home. They didn’t ask why she’d returned, but they were keen enough to notice how forlorn she seemed and they were determined to make her feel welcome and happy. After dinner, Genevieve retired to her room. She curled up on the daisy-printed bedspread and Morpheus snuggled in beside her. She held the moonstone in her hand and drifted off to sleep.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

She felt as if she was partly to blame for Genevieve’s disappearance and she wished for her to return so she could set things right.

That evening, Rosmerta sat as she usually did, warming by the fire while reading, when she heard a rapping at the front door to the pub. She rushed to answer the knock and as she pulled the door open, she said excitedly, “Gen! You’ve come back …” but she stopped short before she could finish. Outside, in the cold night air, stood Professor Lupin. “Oh,” she said, trying hard to mask her disappointment. “Forgive me, Remus. I thought you were …”

“Genevieve?” he asked, looking bewildered. “Has she gone somewhere?”

“Come in out of the cold, dear,” she said, ushering him inside and towards the fireplace. “We have a great deal to talk about.”

A look of great distress washed over Lupin’s face as Madam Rosmerta said, “She knows.” She spent the next fifteen minutes or so explaining how Genevieve had figured it out and confronted her and then disappeared. As she spoke, Lupin leaned his head in his hands and stared at the floor. At one point, she thought perhaps she should stop talking and check to make sure he was all right – he looked as though he might collapse at any given moment.

When at last she had finished, he picked his head up slowly and said, in a raspy voice, “What she must think of me – she must hate me.” His eyes stared blankly across at Madam Rosmerta.

Madam Rosmerta’s heart was breaking right along with his at hearing the despair in his voice and seeing the despondent look upon his face. She tried to find some words that might comfort him. “I don’t believe that she hates you. Don’t you believe that for an instant!” She patted him on the knee. “What I do believe is that, to some extent, she feels betrayed. Everyone knew the truth but her and I think that hurt her more than anything else.”

Lupin looked up at her, hoping against hope that what she said was true. Madam Rosmerta went on. “You know you should have told her, don’t you? I told you it would be as easy or as difficult as you would make it, didn’t I?”

Lupin nodded, knowing that she was right and admitting his mistake. He just prayed that it wasn’t too late. He prayed that he hadn’t lost Genevieve forever.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART TWENTY-EIGHT:

It had been nearly a week since Genevieve had come to her parents’ house and already she was beginning to go crazy. She loved her parents dearly, but she knew with every fiber of her being that she couldn’t stay there much longer – not if she wanted to maintain her sanity, that is.

She managed to sneak up to the attic that afternoon, to escape her mother’s constant hovering. At the far end of the dusty room, past some boxes of Christmas decorations and her great-grandmother’s ancient cedar chest, she noticed four or five of her old paintings propped up against the wall. So, that’s where they’ve stashed these, Genevieve thought. She flipped through them and quickly discovered why her parents would want them out of sight. In the painting she did of the family pet when she was a child, she noticed that Jacques the bulldog was waddling through the tall grass, sniffing for the old shoe he used to chew all the time. As for the portrait of her parents, there they sat of the sofa, her mum fussing over her father’s necktie and her father brushing an eyelash from her mum’s cheek, encouraging her to make a wish. It was a sweet scene, but Genevieve realized they would probably rather be tortured with red-hot pokers than display the enchanted paintings anywhere in the house where they might actually be seen.

That evening at bedtime, she found that sleep came quickly for her, but it was not a peaceful sleep. In her dreams, she saw Lupin. There he was, standing alone in the field in Hogsmeade where she’d had her first flying lesson. It was night and Genevieve looked up and observed the moon, great and full in the sky above. She mouthed the word “no,” but it was inaudible. Without warning, Lupin fell to the ground and let out a bitter wail. His body was writhing in pain and anguish. She tried to run to him, but as it is so many times in dreams, she was incapable of any movement. Suddenly awake, Genevieve sat straight up in bed and let out a loud scream. She was drenched with perspiration and she sat there terrified, clutching the moonstone in her hand.

At about the same time, Lupin was many miles away at Hogwarts, pacing the floor in his office. All he could think of was Genevieve. Where was she? What was she doing? Was she all right? Would he ever see her again? These questions flew around his head like the balls in a Quidditch match. Then, he heard a sound, much louder than the din in his head – the sound of a woman’s piercing cry.

“Genevieve,” he whispered.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART TWENTY-NINE:

Her mother rushed into the bedroom as soon as she’d heard the shriek ringing through the walls of the house. Genevieve’s father, who looked extremely groggy, followed her closely behind.

“Genevieve!” her mother called out. “Are you OK? We thought you were being murdered in your sleep!”

Genevieve, still holding her pendant tightly, said, “It was just a bad dream, Mum. Really, do I look like I’ve been murdered? Go back to bed – both of you. I’m sorry I disturbed you.” Her mother was not easily convinced that she was fine, but she did reluctantly retreat back to her own bedroom, along with her husband.

When they had gone, Genevieve swiftly got out of bed and began to pack her bag. She looked down at Morpheus, who was yawning and stretching on the floor at the foot of the bed and informed him, “We’re going home!”

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

part 30
PART THIRTY:

It was tricky getting back to Hogsmeade, but after sneaking enough for cab fare from her mother’s handbag (she’d apologized in the note she’d left on the dining room table and promised to pay her back as soon as possible) and taking a bumpy ride to the Leaky Cauldron, she utilized what was left of the Floo powder she’d used to get there in the first place and took a sooty journey back to the Three Broomsticks.

Gasping for breath as she emerged from the fireplace (she’d been holding her mouth and nose the entire passageway), Genevieve staggered out into the pub. It was still early morning and the tavern wasn’t open for business yet. Madam Rosmerta, however, was behind the bar, polishing goblets and pitchers and making sure things were ready for the new day. When she laid eyes on the soot-covered girl who had just appeared from her fireplace, tears filled her worn eyes.

“Bless my soul – child, it’s so good to see you!” she said as she sprinted across the room and squeezed Genevieve in the tightest hug she’d ever felt. “What a scare you gave us! We weren’t sure where you’d gone & if you were all right. And without a word – oh, we were thinking the worst. That you’d never come back!” She sniffled and blew her nose into a petal-pink handkerchief she’d pulled from her apron pocket.

“We?” Genevieve asked timidly.

“Lupin … he’s been here everyday, many times a day, checking to see if you’ve come back. He’s absolutely sick with worry about you – he said he wanted to go out and look for you, but I made him promise he wouldn’t. I didn’t want the headmaster becoming cross with him and taking his job away. But, if you hadn’t come back when you did, I might’ve gone off looking for you myself!” Her eyes were red and puffy, as was her nose and there was a shakiness in her voice that Genevieve had never heard before. “You need to speak to him, dear. There’s much to be said … from both of you.”

“I know,” said Genevieve softly. As she did, she touched the moonstone pendant and sighed.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 8/5/02 1:39:32 pm

part 31
PART THIRTY-ONE:

Lupin was in his office at Hogwarts, slumped uncomfortably in the overstuffed chair behind his desk. He’d finally fallen asleep after a very anxious night. He’d sworn he’d heard Genevieve crying out, but how could that be? She was most likely miles & miles away. How in the world could he have heard her? Slowly, his eyes opened. He stretched his arms and legs and rubbed his neck. He felt like every muscle in his body had seized up on him & made a mental note never to fall asleep in that blasted chair again.

Unexpectedly, he sensed that same weird rush he’d gotten when he thought he’d heard Genevieve, yet this time he heard nothing – he just had a feeling. It came out of the blue, just as it had a few hours before. He went to the window, pushed it open and breathed the crisp air deeply into his lungs and then exhaled. I don’t know how I know, but I think she’s back, Lupin thought. He hurriedly pulled on his ragged old robes and quietly made his way out of the castle. He used the Whomping Willow route into Hogsmeade, by way of the Shrieking Shack; a route he knew like the back of his hand. Silently, he exited the dilapidated old house and hiked down the slope towards the Three Broomsticks. If she’s not there, thought Lupin, Madam Rosmerta’s going to have me committed. He’d spent quite a bit of his time there since Genevieve had disappeared and he felt sure the old woman had seen enough of him. But, he felt as if he was being drawn there – it wasn’t something he could easily explain, but he could have bet his life that Genevieve was there that very moment. Whether she wanted to see him or not, was another story.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

Part 32
PART THIRTY-TWO:

He stood on the footpath outside of the Three Broomsticks for several minutes, kneading his hands together nervously, before he finally knocked. Madam Rosmerta opened the door and gave him a half-smile.

“Somehow, I knew you’d come,” she said.

Lupin gulped & gave her a guilty look, “It’s not what you think, though. I had this strange feeling …” As he entered the pub, his heart began to race. Sure enough, there stood Genevieve, still looking dusty and tired from her travels, but looking as beautiful as she ever had, in Lupin’s eyes. He couldn’t take his eyes of off her, either. He was afraid that if he did, she’d fade away, like a dream. Madam Rosmerta left the room without a sound, though neither one of them even noticed.

“I knew you had come back,” he said, slowly walking towards her. “And I heard you last night … you cried out to me. I don’t know how, but I heard you.”

Genevieve touched the moonstone again. Lupin felt a pang in his chest as she did. “The stone,” she murmured. “I dreamt about you last night – you were in pain.”

“Yes, I was,” he whispered.

“The transformations – they’re agonizing, aren’t they?” she asked sorrowfully.

“They are,” he answered. “But the pain I felt last night wasn’t caused by a transformation. It was because I was separated from you. That pain was far greater than any transformation I’ve ever experienced.”

“I’ve been in pain, too,” Genevieve said woefully. “Why couldn’t you tell me the truth?”

Lupin looked at her sad face & wanted to come up with a brilliant reason why he’d not been able to tell her, but there wasn’t any. “I was afraid,” he finally said.

Genevieve understood. She’d not exactly had a wonderful reaction when she figured things out. No doubt Lupin had spent most of his life being afraid of how people would react to the revelation that he was a werewolf. Certainly he’d anticipated such a reaction even from her. It was a difficult feeling, knowing she’d been left out of the loop, but she was over that now. A week with her parents had seen to that. The only thing she knew was, now that she was once again standing in the same room with him, this was the only place she truly wanted to be.

She took a few steps closer to him and assured him, “You have nothing to be afraid of.”

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

Re: part 30
PART THIRTY-FOUR:

A short time later, Madam Rosmerta emerged from the backroom carrying a stack of newspapers and cursing about how that ninny of an owl who the Daily Prophet sent to deliver the papers had decorated her favorite windowbox in the back with pellets. As she passed the papers out to the patrons, Genevieve picked up the words “unsanitary” and “unhygienic.” Finally, she said to an elderly little witch who was nibbling on a crumpet how the Ministry was going to be getting a really nasty owl from her! Genevieve wrinkled her nose and could only imagine what she’d meant by that remark, when Madam Rosmerta joined her where she was sitting at the empty bar.

“So,” she started slowly, trying to sound like she was showing no particular interest, “did you and the professor have a chance to talk?”

Genevieve shifted uncomfortably on her barstool. “We talked – a little.” Her face turned ruby red.

“Good for you,” said Madam Rosmerta, with a naughty wink as she gave Genevieve a little pat on the back.

Thoroughly embarrassed, Genevieve announced that it was time for her to clean herself up. She promised to come down as soon as she was finished to help Madam Rosmerta with the customers, but she’d have none of it. She insisted on the girl taking a nice, warm bath followed by a long, relaxing nap.

By early evening, after she’d rested enough, Gen felt the need to come down and lend a hand. She was feeling a tad guilty for leaving Madam Rosmerta high & dry for a week, so she tied on her apron and headed to the tavern to face the evening crowd.

And what a crowd it was – she glanced around the room, hoping that perhaps Lupin had come in for a drink, but she didn’t see him anywhere. She did, however, notice another Hogwarts professor – one she’d seen before. She couldn’t remember his name, but he was the intimidating one she’d seen there the night she met Lupin for the first time. She gathered up her courage and approached his table, determined to do her duty as waitress and take this man’s order, no matter how creepy he looked to her.

With a gulp, she said, “Good evening, sir. May I take your order?” She sounded falsely pleasant – she was trying extra hard not to upset him, but she got the impression that he could see right through her – both figuratively and literally.

Giving her a scornful sneer, he perused the menu and grumbled, “Just bring me the usual.”

The usual, thought Genevieve. What in the world is “the usual?” Panic stricken, she nodded and hurried over to the bar, desperate to get Madam Rosmerta’s attention. Rosmerta was hustling around, trying to fill three pitchers and two trays simultaneously, but she noticed Genevieve’s dismay and asked her what was wrong.

“Please, please, please tell me you know what that man’s usual order is,” she said frantically as she gestured to the table where she’d just come from.

“Who, Snape?” She asked as Genevieve nodded. “Just bring him a cognac and he’ll be happy.”

“Somehow I doubt that,” muttered Genevieve under her breath as she began filling a goblet with cognac.

She obediently brought the drink to his table and asked, “Will that be all?” hoping and praying that it would be all.

“I believe so,” he said in an irritated tone. He was just about to sip his cognac, when he observed her pendant – the light from the oil lamp at his table had caught the stone and illuminated it. A look of great curiosity crossed his face as he said, “Moonstone, eh? Legend has it, that stone is formed from moonlight - if you believe that sort of nonsense.” Genevieve tried to give him a half-smile for sharing that tidbit of information with her & as she tried to leave, he added, “Do you wear it to ward off werewolves?”

Astounded, Genevieve wasn’t sure how to react.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 8/7/02 8:38:04 am
