Just had a thought -- maybe it was something they changed for the American version of the book. Sheesh. <img src=http://www.uniquehardware.co.uk/server- ... scared.gif ALT=":rolleyes"> Why would they go & do that?? PART THIRTY-FIVE:

Just walk away, Genevieve thought to herself. No need for an altercation – just slowly walk away. She pretended to ignore Snape’s snide remark, though the astonished expression on her face told anyone within earshot that she registered what he said loud and clear. As she made her way back to the bar in an attempt to regain her composure, she heard a loud, scoffing sound come from Snape’s table.

“What in the world was all that about?” Genevieve said, half annoyed and half mystified.

“What was all what about, dear?” asked Madam Rosmerta as she wiped the bar top clean with a rag.

“That professor – Snape – he made some comment about my pendant, then audaciously asked me if I wore it to ward off werewolves.” She said the last word in a hushed tone, not wanting to attract attention to the nature of their conversation.

“Ohh,” said Madam Rosmerta perceptively, “I think I understand why he’s trying to put your back up.” She nodded her head as it all became crystal clear to her.

“Care to share?” said Genevieve tersely. She’d started the day off in a wonderful mood, but from the moment she’d waited on Snape’s table, that mood took a turn for the worse. She was now borderline livid.

“I’m sure most of the staff at Hogwarts is aware of the fact that Lupin’s been out here in Hogsmeade, on the weekends he’s had available that is, to tutor you – he wouldn’t have been able to do it without the approval of the headmaster & it’s usually standard policy for the staff the be apprised of these sorts of things, you know …”

“And that would give this professor cause to be rude because??” Genevieve asked impatiently.

“Oh … it’s common knowledge that Snape pretty much despises Lupin. Goes way back, their bad blood and all. And the feeling’s mutual, you can believe that. Neither one of them will ever be presidents of the other’s fan club or anything,” chuckled Madam Rosmerta. “Just ignore him.”

“Easy for you to say,” Genevieve said sulkily.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

The added touch of her beloved moonstone pendant complimented the outfit beautifully, with its milky luminescence contrasting the deepness of the midnight blue in the gown.

When she dressed on Friday for the engagement, she decided to sweep her long tresses up with the comb Madam Rosmerta had given to her on Christmas. Here's the rest of PART 36, which is finally completed now, thanks to the end of the phone calls. <img src=http://www.uniquehardware.co.uk/server- ... /cwm27.gif ALT=":lol">

**********************************************
PART 36, continued

Genevieve had never been to Hogwarts before. As she entered the castle, she felt very meek – the massive walls of the fortress-school were slightly intimidating to her as she and Lupin made their way up to the improvised dining room. She’d heard the castle was haunted by any number of spirits and specters and she secretly hoped to avoid any encounters with anything ghost-like that evening. Just as that thought crossed her mind, an animal, somewhat resembling a cat, hissed out of a dark corner. Genevieve jumped at least three feet back, her heart pounding so loud in her chest, she was sure Lupin could hear it. Only seconds later, a snarly-looking man joined the gaunt feline and turned a suspicious eye on Genevieve.

“Never fear, Argus. Dumbledore knows I have a guest – it’s all been approved,” said Lupin, reassuring the dour old chap. Argus Filch growled a negative retort under his breath, of which Genevieve only made out the words, “better not make a mess,” and then he and his frightful looking pet departed. “Don’t mind, Filch – he’s the caretaker here at Hogwarts. He’s perpetually having a bad day.” He laughed, trying to put her at ease. He took her by the hand and led her further down the corridor and into a shadowy classroom.

With the clap of his hands and the word “lumos,” Lupin lit the dark room with the peaceful glow of candlelight. A picturesque little dining table was set up in the middle of the room, bedecked with porcelain dishes, golden flatware and crystalline glassware. A vase of white roses was placed in the center.

“The house-elves should be sending up the meal very soon,” said Lupin as he offered Genevieve a seat in one of the velvet armchairs at the table.

Genevieve was utterly speechless as she examined the exquisite detail of the room. “You went through all of this trouble for me?” she asked him.

“It’s no trouble at all – and even if it were, I’d still have done it for you,” he said with a smile. “Actually, it’s just a spell. We’re really seated at an old school desk – which probably makes it seem a little less romantic, now that you know that!”

“Not in the least,” Genevieve assured him.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART THIRTY-SEVEN:

The house-elves were right on schedule, delivering a superb banquet of food for the pair. Their crystal goblets were instantly refilled each time they came close to being emptied and each course was promptly changed upon completion of the previous.

As they made their way through the main course, Genevieve quietly inquired, “May I ask you a … a kind of personal question?”

Lupin nodded, “You may ask me anything.”

“How did it happen?” she asked. “I mean – how did you become a werewolf in the first place?” The word came out easier this time than it usually did and she was thankful for that. She wanted to sound tactful and not choke on the word as she usually did.

Lupin understood her curiosity and actually welcomed her willingness to talk about it with him. He shared with her the story of how he was bitten as a young boy and Genevieve listened intently. She questioned him on where he went when the transformations took place and he answered her with a chuckle.

“Not as far away as you might think,” he said. “Just up to my office.”

Amazed, Genevieve wanted to know how that was possible. “Do they have to lock you up?” she asked.

“Thank goodness, no,” said Lupin. “The potions master prepares a concoction of wolfsbane for me and I’m harmless. All I have to do is wait for the passing of the full moon and I’m back to normal.”

“The potions master,” said Genevieve in dismay as she made a face.

“You’ve had the pleasure of meeting Snape, have you?” asked Lupin sympathetically.

Genevieve rolled her eyes a bit and said, “Yes, I’ve had that distinct honor, thank you very much! And I must say, as far as Hogwarts teachers go, I much prefer the instructor of Defense Against the Dark Arts,” she said as she reached across the table for one of his hands. Lupin couldn’t stop himself from turning red as he squeezed her hand.

“But, tell me this,” she went on, “the transformations – they are quite painful, aren’t they? I read that in one of Hermione’s books.”

“They are,” he agreed. “But, since the wolfsbane potion, it’s not as terrible as it could be. And besides, I’m used to it. I really can’t remember a time when things were any different – I was so young when it first happened.” His voice seemed to drift off as he thought back to his childhood.

Genevieve decided it was time to change the subject. “Do you dance?” she asked him as she noticed a music box near the window of the enchanted dining room, which had probably been transfigured from a school supply box of some sort.

“Dance?” Lupin asked, as if the concept was foreign to him.

“Yes, dance,” said Genevieve. “You know, when two people rhythmically move to music,” she added sassily.

“I know the concept,” said Lupin, embarrassed. “I just haven’t actually put it to use in a long time.”

“Well,” proposed Genevieve, “I think we should see if you remember anything or not.” She stood up, held out her hand and urged him to join her. Looking at how attractive she was in that midnight blue dress and how the candlelight made an aura of angelic beauty around her, Lupin could not resist – even if he ended up making an utter fool out of himself. His mind flashed back to some of the formal gatherings held at the school when he was a student– he was, to put it quite simply, not exactly the most popular boy at Hogwarts. He danced with some of his female classmates out of necessity (he seemed to recall a threat for points to be taken away from any student’s house if he or she was found to be not participating in the festivities), but he never felt comfortable enough with himself to allow himself to get close to any of them. Not until he met Genevieve, that is.

With a gulp, he started the music box, which began to play a melodious tune. This isn’t as bad as I imagined it would be, thought Lupin as he and Genevieve swayed to the music. “Hardly stepping on your toes at all, eh?” he said proudly. Genevieve laughed and rested her head on his shoulder as they continued to dance.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART THIRTY-EIGHT:

The end had come too soon to the magical evening. Lupin had just begun to escort Genevieve down the corridor for their trip back towards Hogsmeade when he heard a noise followed by a curt “Shhhh!” He cleared his throat and said brusquely, “I do hope there are no students about at this hour.” Genevieve glanced at him and gave him a perplexed stare.

“I don’t see anyone,” she told him.

“Neither do I,” he replied. “However …” He reached his left arm out and felt around until he heard a shrill squeal. Slowly, the bodies of Harry Potter, Ron Weasely and Hermione Granger appeared from underneath the ever-useful Invisibility Cloak. Hermione was still rubbing her nose, which apparently was poked when Lupin had reached out to find the unseen trio. “I probably don’t even want to know what you three are up to at this hour of the night, do I?” he asked them.

“Nope,” replied Ron. “That’s very perceptive of you, Professor. You sure don’t.” Harry elbowed him in the ribs. Ron went on, “And we won’t ask why you’re sporting around the castle at this hour with Genevieve.” This time, Hermione poked him violently in the back.

Hermione piped up, trying to get Ron out of the hot water he had so quickly gotten himself into. “It’s good to see you again, Genevieve. You look smashing.”

“Thanks,” said Genevieve, still trying to repress the giggles from Ron’s impertinent remark.

Hermione eyed the moonstone pendant and they began to bulge with interest. “Wow – you’ve got a moonstone – I’ve just read the most fascinating things about them in a gemology book I checked out from Madam Pince …”

Harry cut her off abruptly, “Why don’t we let them get going, Hermione – really, they must have somewhere else they’d rather be.” He motioned to her to get back under the cloak before Lupin decided it wouldn’t be fair for him not to take any points away from Gryffindor for finding all three of them in the hallway after hours. Hermione obliged and the three of them vanished.

As Genevieve heard their footsteps depart up the corridor, she whispered goodnight to them.

Had they gotten out of the castle without any more encounters, they both would have been perfectly satisfied, but as it was, this was not their night to go unnoticed. Nearing the exit to the grounds, they met none other than Professor Snape. Genevieve’s pulse ran quick and she hoped that he’d merely sneer at them and walk past, but they weren’t so lucky.

“Lupin,” he drawled, looking down his rather large nose at him.

“Snape,” was Lupin’s short reply.

“I see you’ve been – giving more lessons,” he said as he examined Genevieve’s wardrobe.

“Good evening, then,” Lupin said, trying to cut him off. He led Genevieve towards the exit and as they were about to leave, Snape called after her.

“It was smart of you to bring a weapon,” he said triumphantly.

She was confused for a moment, then reached up to feel the silver comb in her hair, which he had noticed as she walked away. Lupin observed as she did this & caught Snape’s meaning. It was all Genevieve could do to hold him back as Snape strode away.

“Let him go!” she whispered to him. “He’s just jealous!”

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

If I could only keep it from ringing -- I'd have more to post right now, if not for having 2 more phone calls a little while ago!! Dang this RLS!! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

**********************************************

PART THIRTY-NINE:

Lupin wasn’t ordinarily a violent man, but at that moment he was suppressing a very strong urge to smash Severus’ teeth in. It was one thing for Snape to grate him about being a werewolf, but it was an entirely different matter when he began picking on Genevieve.

“Don’t let him get to you,” Genevieve said soothingly as they started across the school grounds. “He wants to see you upset – if you give in, then he’s won.”

Lupin took a deep breath and nodded. “I know,” he agreed. Glancing across the grounds, he realized they weren’t more than several meters away from the Whomping Willow. “Care to take a short cut?” he asked as he motioned towards the tree.

Genevieve was puzzled, but also very curious. Lupin urged her to stand back while he cautiously approached the tree. As he neared it, the branches sprang to life and began to lash out fiercely at him. Before they could do any damage, however, Lupin dove headlong towards the trunk and struck a knot located there. The tree suddenly stood motionless and Lupin hopped up, dusting his robes off.

Genevieve, amazed and now even more curious, walked over where he stood next to an opening in the root section.

“There’s a tunnel here that leads right into Hogsmeade,” he told her. “By way of the Shrieking Shack, that is.”

Genevieve’s face went pale. “The – Shrieking – Shack??” she stammered. “But – it’s …”

“Haunted?” asked Lupin. “Hasn’t been for years,” he said. “Trust me on this one!”

He lowered himself into the tunnel, and then reached up to help Genevieve. She slid down slowly, until his arms were around her shoulders and she could feel the ground beneath her feet. He felt her trembling just a bit, apparently because she was still unnerved about the prospect of having to cross through the legendary Shrieking Shack. He led her through the tunnel, which was lit only by the light at the end of his wand. As they walked, he relieved her anxieties by telling her how the legend came about in the first place. When they reached the end of the passageway, they entered the musty, disorderly room that Lupin had known all too well. He helped her around some mangled pieces of a broken rocking chair that lay on the floor. Genevieve only got a quick look around, for Lupin quickly steered her towards the exit of the decrepit old place.

“Alohomora!” he proclaimed at the boarded-up door. It creaked open and they walked towards the slope, which led down to the Three Broomsticks.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

Would we?” He leaned his face in to meet hers and kissed her softly at first, then more passionately, savoring the sweetness and knowing that, in each other’s arms, they felt a sense of peace that had escaped them both for so long. He held her close, not wanting to let her leave, though he knew he’d see her the very next day for their lessons.

She moved her mouth along his neck, then leisurely over to his ear and whispered, “You’re not making this any easier, you know?”

“Neither are you,” he whispered back, smiling and kissing her tenderly one last time.

“Goodnight,” she murmured as she opened the door, hoping it wouldn't creak and wake Rosmerta as she did so. She held onto his hand for a moment longer, and then finally she reluctantly let go.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

part 41

Post by bistyboo1974 »

PART FORTY-ONE:

The next morning, Genevieve awoke to a tapping noise. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and stumbled in her nightdress to the door of her room. She opened the door, only to discover an empty hallway. How peculiar, she thought as she closed the door. Tap, tap, tap. There it was again. This time, she turned to the window and saw Harry’s snowy owl, Hedwig, perched outside on the ledge.

Hedwig crammed her body inside as Genevieve opened the window to invite her in. She toppled onto Genevieve’s writing desk, her plumage going this way and that. Genevieve retrieved the letter that was bound to her leg as the owl dropped a package from her beak. She glanced at the package, and then decided to read the letter first.

Dear Genevieve,

I wanted to share with you the interesting things I read in the gemology book that I checked out from the library. Sorry I couldn’t stay and tell you last night. Harry was sure Professor Lupin might have been forced to snag some points from Gryffindor for catching us out so late, but I have a feeling his mind wasn’t on points at all!

Anyhow, this is some of the information about the moonstone. There are many myths and legends surrounding one special moonstone in particular, and a French wizard and gemologist named Pierre Bijou conducted a very thorough study on it and discovered many of its unique characteristics. He called that special moonstone Lune de’Lamant, which means Lover’s Moon.

There’s far too much to write here, but Hedwig’s got the book, so please read all about it, but don’t forget to send it back. If Madam Pince found out I sent a book off-campus, she’d probably have me expelled.

Your friend,
Hermione

Genevieve set the parchment down and tore open the plain, brown paper that the book was wrapped in. It was a leather-bound book, simply entitled Gemology: The Ancient Study of Precious & Semiprecious Stones, by Professor Pierre Bijou. She flipped through the pages and admired the eye-catching illustrations. She saw gemstones of every size, shape and color. There were aquamarines, opals, sapphires and rubies -- amethyst, emeralds, diamonds and garnet. And then she saw the moonstone – even in the illustration, its milky-white splendor was striking. She scanned the page and a paragraph caught her eye. The stone is referred to as Lune de’Lamant (Lover’s Moon) for the mystical properties it possesses, she read. When a man gives the stone to his true love, it seems to bind them heart and soul. The wearer of the stone can communicate with her lover, even across hundreds or even thousands of miles. She can also seemingly feel his emotions, as well, whether they are happy or painful. Genevieve had suspected as much about her own stone, knowing that it had to have some sort of supernatural qualities. Through the stone, she seemed to be able to call out to Lupin when she’d returned home, not to mention the frightening dream she’d had the night before that. She’d sworn she felt his pain and woke up clutching the pendant. Very interested in finding out more, she read on. Fables have long been told about the Lover’s Moon. Accounts have been hard to prove, but it seems as though many people, for three distinct reasons, have desired to be the owner of the stone. One, the wearer of the stone is blessed with good fortune. Two, the wearer of the stone will be protected from harm and three, the stone allows the wearer to shapeshift.

Shapeshift! thought Genevieve, filled with wonder. Surely, that’s pure myth! But, she was convinced that old Professor Bijou wasn’t too crazy in his assessment of the stone. She felt sure it connected her to Lupin in some way or another. Perhaps her beloved moonstone was the fabled Lune de'Lamant.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...
