Thanks yet again, Melisa & Hermione!! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> Have I mentioned how much I love my faithful readers?! If not for you, I really wouldn't be inspired to continue!!

**********************************************
PART FORTY-TWO:

Later that day, Lupin arrived and their lessons continued, yet it was a great deal more difficult when the weekend was over than it had been before. Harder still was the following weekend, when they both realized there would be another full moon in just a short period of time. It was easier said than done when Lupin said his final goodbyes and bid farewell to Genevieve until the waning of the moon.

On the evening he left her, she was feeling particularly restless once again. Her mind wouldn’t allow her to rest, so she bundled up and went out for a late night walk. Somehow, she felt compelled to return to the Shrieking Shack once again. Perhaps it was the spirit of his former presence being there that induced her to revisit the ramshackle old place – she wasn’t quite sure, but her feet seemed to instinctively head up the familiar slope when she left the tavern again that night.

As the house came into view, she looked up at the sky. A few clouds hid the nearly full moon, so it wasn’t as bright as it could be. She pulled out her wand and the scent of sandalwood wafted to her nose. The scent became even stronger when she flicked it and said, “Lumos!” Now, with the newly created beam of light, she made her way easily up to the house.

Even though she knew it wasn’t haunted, it was still a frightening looking place. The doors and windows were boarded up tightly. She couldn’t imagine that the dwelling had ever looked friendly or welcoming, even when it had first been constructed. The house moaned and creaked every now and again, as old houses do, and Genevieve cautiously made her way to the front and tried to peer in through a crack in one of the moldy boards. It was dark and gloomy inside, just as she’d remembered it when Lupin had quickly led her through, but she found it difficult to make out anything more than piles of dusty, broken furniture and a couple of cobwebs.

It was a very chilly night and Genevieve decided to go. As she turned to leave, a dark shadow scurried across her feet and she screamed. I think that was a rat, she thought, thoroughly disgusted. She picked up her pace, still sickened from the thought of the rodent encounter. She heard another noise, but this time she didn’t think it was the settling of the old house. Then, she heard a distinct pop – she turned around to investigate, but before she knew it, everything went black.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 8/9/02 2:00:29 pm

PART FORTY-THREE:

Everything was a haze. Genevieve couldn’t make out a thing and there was a searing pain in her head, so intense that she thought it had been split in two. She felt like someone was carrying her – she couldn’t see who and she couldn’t form distinguishable words to ask. She had tried to form words, though. She wanted to call out for Lupin – she couldn’t even remember that he wasn’t there. He’d already confined himself in preparation for the transformation. She felt something soft beneath her, most likely a bed, but even the softness of the bed didn’t help the throbbing inside her head subside. She didn’t even realize it, but she was wailing. She faintly heard voices through the sounds of her own cries – first, a low voice. Perhaps the voice was speaking to her. She didn’t know and didn’t care. She just wanted the pain to stop. She felt a compress of some sort being placed on her head. It covered her entire forehead and eyes and she thought she would be sick from the strong aroma of lavender it emitted. It was damp – a solution oozed around her eyes and seeped into her skin. Then she heard a higher voice – a woman’s. She heard her say forcefully, “That’ll be enough – I’ll take it from here.” And then it was dark again.

When Genevieve finally opened her eyes, she could see again. But, what she saw was very unfamiliar to her. She quickly sat up in the strange bed she was lying in and swiftly realized what a bad idea that was. She toppled back down, landing her head on the white pillow below. Dizzy and lightheaded, she scanned her surroundings as she reclined. I’m in some sort of hospital, Genevieve decided. On a small table beside the bed were cards, flowers and a couple small gifts. She squinted to read some of the cards, which were propped up and neatly displayed. She saw names she recognized – Harry, Ron, Hermione and even one from Madam Rosmerta.

A stern-looking witch pulled back the white curtains that surrounded Genevieve’s bed and said, “Oh, good. You’re awake. You’ve been unconscious for days. I was wondering if the potion was going to kick in anytime soon.”

In a hoarse voice, Genevieve said, “Where am I? And who are you?”

The woman replied, “You’re in the Hogwart’s Hospital Wing and I’m Madam Pomfrey. Now, you just heed my advice and relax. You’re nowhere near 100% yet, dear.”

“What happened to me?” asked Genevieve, rubbing the sore spot on her forehead. "My head is achy."

“I’m not exactly sure – a few nights ago, Professor Snape brought you in – you were in terrible shape. Looked like you’d taken a bludger straight to your head. I’ve never seen such an injury, in all my years as a nurse.”

Genevieve’s mouth gaped open wide. “Professor Snape?” she asked in shock. How did he come to find me? she thought. Last thing I remember was being at the Shrieking Shack and I was alone.

Madam Pomfrey nodded and told her to rest. “You need not bother yourself with anything right now. You need to recuperate.”

The nurse left her and she lay there in the bed, thinking wary thoughts about Snape. She thought it was fairly suspicious that he would just be wandering around Hogsmeade in the middle of the night, and then just happen to notice her lying there in front of the Shrieking Shack, unconscious & injured. She drifted back off to sleep for a while, and awoke suddenly when she heard a gruff throat being cleared.

Severus Snape, looking just as bad-tempered and crotchety as ever, stood a few feet from her hospital bed.

“What do you want?” she snapped. “Come back to finish me off?”

“What?” barked Snape in response. “Finish you off, silly girl? If I hadn’t found you the other night, you would be finished off.”

“And just what might you have been doing, rootlessly walking around Hogsmeade in the middle of the night, pray tell?”

“Typical,” he huffed. “I come here to see if you’re going to live and I come to an interrogation.” His cold eyes pierced through her. If she hadn’t known better, she might have thought he was hurt – if he had any feelings that could have been hurt, that is. “If you must know, I had business in Hogsmeade that night and lucky for you, I heard a scream coming from the direction of the Shrieking Shack and decided to investigate.” He was still scowling at her. “If I hadn’t, you wouldn’t have made it till morning. Whoever attacked you did a good job of it.”

Genevieve looked at the disagreeable man and, no matter what her feelings were regarding him, she found it hard not to believe his story. She still wasn’t willing to give him every ounce of her trust, but for now, she was going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

“Where is Lupin?” Genevieve thought to ask.

Snape couldn’t control the urge and rolled his eyes as he heard the name. “Your precious Lupin is currently indisposed,” he said carelessly. “Consult your lunar charts, dear. Tonight’s the full moon.”

Madam Pomprey came bustling back in at that point, carrying with her a tray of food. “Time for this girl’s supper, Severus. Quit pestering her so that she can eat.”

“Madam Pomfrey!” Genevieve called out abruptly.

“What is it, child?” asked Madam Pomfrey, alarmed.

“My pendant – where is it?” she asked as she felt around her neck. “Was it taken off when I was brought in?” Madam Pomfrey shook her head and Genevieve looked over at Snape suspiciously.

“I know what you’re thinking and you’re wrong – you weren’t wearing that blasted thing when I found you. I would have noticed,” he said haughtily.

“I know I had it on when I left the Three Broomsticks,” she said firmly. “Whoever attacked me took the moonstone!”

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 8/9/02 2:23:05 pm

PART FORTY-FOUR:

Madam Pomfrey shot a distressed look at Genevieve. “Settle down, girl! You’re going to make yourself ill!” She glanced over at Snape. “I need you to prepare some more of the Lavandula Potion, but not so strong this time. I don’t want her slipping out of consciousness for another three days again.”

Snape grudgingly left – his curiosity was evidently piqued by Genevieve’s accusation that whoever attacked her had also robbed her, but he had resigned himself that he could wait to inquire more about the situation when he returned. Madam Pomfrey fluffed Genevieve’s pillow a bit and instructed her finish her supper and relax until Snape returned with the potion.

As she sipped some weak broth and nibbled a piece of bland bread, Genevieve heard the creak of a door, followed by several whispering voices. Hush, cried one of the voices in an undertone. Do you want Madam Pomfrey to catch us? Genevieve recognized the voice right away and said, “Hermione – is that you?”

Three bodies emerged from thin air as Harry pulled off the Invisibilty Cloak that covered them.

“Oh, Genevieve!” cried Hermione, rushing to the side of the bed. “We were so worried about you when we saw that you were here! Had Neville not gotten his hand caught when the Fat Lady swung her portrait closed the other day, we might not have found out at all. We were visiting him the other day when we discovered you were here. We’ve tried to get in everyday to see you, but Madam Pomfrey always turns us away.”

“I’d noticed you’d been here,” said Genevieve, smiling warmly and motioning to the cards on the bedside table.

“Do you think you’ll be wanting those Chocolate Frogs?” asked Ron keenly, eyeing the boxes next to the cards.

“Honestly!” exclaimed Hermione, giving Ron a disapproving glare.

“We can’t stay long,” said Harry. “But, can you tell us how it happened? How were you hurt so badly?”

Genevieve told them what had happened – about taking a walk that night, wandering up to the Shrieking Shack, heading home and suddenly being attacked.

“I didn’t see a soul,” she said, sounding frustrated. “I heard a noise behind me, went to turn around and then everything went black. Next thing I knew, I was in the hospital.”

Hermione looked grave and Harry & Ron were puzzling over what Genevieve had just told them.

“Oh,” Genevieve added all of a sudden, “and my pendant has gone missing. I have no doubt that it was around my neck that night, but when I woke up here, it was gone. Snape said he didn’t notice I had it on when he found me, so …”

“ Snape?!” exclaimed Harry, Ron and Hermione, at the same time. Genevieve recounted the story of how Snape had rescued her.

“It’s impossible for me to imagine Snape rescuing anyone,” said Ron doubtfully. “Are you sure he wasn’t double-dealing you?”

“I know what you mean,” said Genevieve, “but I think he was telling the truth.”

“Yes,” agreed Hermione. “I know how we all feel about him, but I don’t think he’d attack Genevieve.” She stopped, but Harry & Ron could see the wheels still turning in her mind.

“What are you thinking, Hermione?” asked Harry inquisitively.

“I think I have a plan to find Genevieve’s pendant,” she proclaimed.

“And how would we go about that?” asked Ron as he hungrily munched on one of Genevieve’s Chocolate Frogs.

“Well, there’s a potion – it’s called the Desidera Potion – once you brew it, you’re able to look into it and see where the object you’re missing is located.”

“What’s the catch?” Harry asked skeptically.

“Well, some of the ingredient’s may be a little tricky to get,” said Hermione.

Ron gagged on the piece of chocolate he’d just bitten off. “We’re going to have to break into Snape’s office again, aren’t we?” He gave Hermione a glum look.

“Yes,” Hermione said. “But, that’s not all.”

Ron’s eyes began to bulge. “Blimey, what could be worse than that?”

“Er – there’s this little hitch, but I’m sure we can get around it,” she said, trying to sound convincing, but doing a very poor job of it.

“Out with it, Hermione!” bellowed Ron, spewing bits of chocolate on the floor.

“Shhhh!” hissed Hermione. “All right then, here it is. We need hair from both the owner of the pendant and the person who gave it to them.” She glanced over to Genevieve and said, “I’m assuming Professor Lupin gave it to you?”

Genevieve nodded and Harry looked out the window of the hospital room. “The full moon’s rising tonight, Hermione. You do realize what that means, don’t you?”

“Yes,” she said matter-of-factly, “but if were to find that pendant, which will lead us to Genevieve’s attacker, mind you, we’ve got to do this tonight!”

“You’re crazy, you know that, right?” said Ron, feeling defeated.

Genevieve piped up, “I can’t have you three getting into trouble and putting yourselves in danger over this.” She pleaded with them, but Hermione was resolved that they were going to go through with it.

“We’ve done stuff like this before,” Harry assured her, but the look on his face proved that he could use some assurance of his own.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART FORTY-FIVE:

The three left the hospital wing under the cover of the Invisibility Cloak and headed for their first stop – Snape’s office. Hermione had decided that she would be the one to pilfer the articles they needed, since she had experience in the matter. Harry and Ron would stand guard at the door.

“I wish we had the Marauder’s Map with us,” grumbled Ron. “I know I’d feel a whole lot better if I knew exactly where Snape was right this very minute.”

“I’m pleased you feel that way, Mr. Weasley,” snarled a familiar voice. “You should be feeling delightful now that you know where I am. Now, take off that confounded cloak and show your pitiful little face!”

Slowly, the boys slipped the cloak off and guiltily looked into the eyes of the Potions Master, who was looking absolutely giddy at the prospect of knocking a few points off of Gryffindor House. Suddenly, his brow furrowed. “And where is Miss Granger?” He looked at the door to his office, which stood slightly ajar. He pushed it open to discover Hermione, standing red-faced with her hands behind her back. “The elusive Miss Granger – I knew you weren’t far behind your partners in crime. Show me what’s behind your back.”

Hermione shifted nervously and tried to stutter out an excuse. “P-p-professor, I…”

“SHOW ME NOW, GIRL!!” he boomed.

Hermione quickly dropped two jars, a pouch and some sort of plant part onto Snape’s desk and backed away, afraid he might lunge at her in his fury. He strode over to his desk and inspected the items. He mumbled to himself and then turned an accusing eye to Hermione. “What was it you were planning to concoct, Miss Granger? There’s only one potion I know of that uses the mixture of these ingredients & that’s the Desidera Potion. You wouldn’t be trying to help your friend in the hospital wing find her lost jewelry, now would you?”

Hermione meekly nodded. Snape took a step towards her and her face turned as pale as Nearly Headless Nick’s.

“You’re a daring trio, aren’t you?” he asked smarmily. “But don’t presume to think you could handle this potion on your own.”

Ron shot Harry a bewildered look as Hermione stood like a statue, waiting to hear what else Snape had to say on the matter and fully expecting to get detention for the rest of the school year is she was lucky.

“You’ll need an experienced Potions Master to succeed in your little endeavor,” he declared, as Hermione’s mouth gaped wide open like a cavern.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 8/10/02 11:20:52 am

PART FORTY-SIX:

“The last thing I need is for the three of you troublemakers getting devoured by a werewolf,” said Snape, who looked as though the prospect of them being eaten alive wasn’t half bad. “ I’m going to get the hair. You stay here until I return, or you’ll be in worse trouble than you already are,” he added with a smirk. He left the office, his robes swishing malevolently as he went.

Lupin’s office was a few floors above the dungeon, so Snape marched up the staircase, considering the venture he was undertaking. He surely wasn’t doing this for Lupin’s benefit – or for the benefit of those troublesome students he’d left behind in his office. He was doing it to find out who was behind the attack of an innocent person in Hogsmeade. Well, not completely innocent, he thought. She has horrendous taste in the company she keeps. Still, that doesn’t make her worthy of such a vicious attack.

He swept up the last staircase towards Lupin’s office when he saw a weak young woman standing (if you could call it standing – it was more like she was doubled-over) a few feet away from him.

“Oh,” she gasped, apparently not expecting to see him. “I was …”

“Just paying a visit to your beloved Remus?” he said nastily. “Better watch out – I hear he has a nasty bite.”

Genevieve glared at him and said, “No -- just looking for ... someone else. Why are you here? You’re not going to do something to him, are you?”

“If I had any intention of harming Remus Lupin, I’d have done it by now,” drawled Snape. “It’s not as if I hadn’t had the opportunity.”

“And it’s not like you don’t have the motive, either,” accused Genevieve.

“You, my dear girl, must be insane,” he went on. “Sneaking into an office with a fully-transformed werewolf? You’re but a half-trained witch – you wouldn’t stand a chance if … when he tries to attack you – especially not in your current condition,” he said smugly.

Genevieve looked like a teakettle ready to blow. “I may be only a half-trained witch, as you call it, but I happen to know a little something you may not be aware of. The wolfsbane potion renders him harmless. He’s probably in there sleeping. He wouldn’t attack me!” Her cheeks were flushed in pure rage.

Snape looked undaunted. “I happen to prepare that potion – I think I’m fully aware of its effects,” he said sharply. “I’m here to help that irritating little trio you're probably here to meet get a hair from that beast for their potion.”

Genevieve looked at him, full of doubt. “I’m going in there with you,” she said boldly. “Somehow, I don’t believe I can fully trust you.”

"Do as you wish,” he said, clearly irritated, “but I caution you to stick close to the door.”

He slowly opened the door to the office, which was dimly lit. Genevieve couldn’t see anything except Lupin's desk, chair, bookshelves and a grindylow tank, but she heard the steady breathing of a sleeping animal.

“Stay there,” whispered Snape firmly, pointing to the door. He skulked over to the desk and peered around it. He slowly leaned over and plucked a single hair from the back of the slumbering wolf. A low growl sounded as he cautiously backed up. Genevieve couldn’t resist – she’d tiptoed to the other side of the desk and saw a pair of bright eyes glowing in the shadowy office. The nose of the wolf sniffed the air in her direction, then in the direction of Snape. The growl became louder as the wolf stood up and bared his teeth at the Potions Master.

Snape swiftly made his way around the opposite side of the desk and grabbed Genevieve by the arm. He pulled her from the office and slammed the door behind them. As they shuffled off down the corridor, Genevieve heard a mournful howl.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 8/10/02 11:25:51 am

PART FORTY-SEVEN:

“He wouldn’t have hurt me,” Genevieve said indignantly as they proceeded on to Snape’s office. “You, on the other hand, I’m not so sure about.”

“Tell me again why I decided to save your life the other night?” Snape snapped at her.

Genevieve didn’t reply. She sulked the rest of the way to the dungeon and suddenly felt very tired from all of the excitement. When they reached Snape’s office, Harry, Hermione and Ron looked astonished to see Genevieve was with him.

“Genevieve!” shouted Hermione. “You should be in bed!” She pulled out Snape’s desk chair and insisted Genevieve sit down. Snape grumbled, but didn’t object as he prepared to make the Desidera Potion.

After about a half hour of bubbling and stewing, the potion was ready for viewing. All that was left was for someone to examine it and the pendant’s location would be revealed. Genevieve insisted on doing this herself, much to Snape’s dismay. She nudged him out of her way and she gazed into the mirror-like mixture.

“Ohh,” she gasped. “I know where that is!”

“Where?” inquired Harry, Ron and Hermione, simultaneously.

“Look,” she said as she showed them the image in the potion. Snape peered over their heads. They all recognized the tumbledown building that surrounded the pendant – it was none other than the Shrieking Shack.

“But, who is that person with it?” asked Harry. They could see the movement of a figure just at the edge of the basin that contained the potion. As Snape tried to get a closer look, the mixture began to bubble again and the image vanished.

“Blast!” said Hermione, perturbed. “We didn’t see who it was.”

“No,” said Snape, “but I know where to look.” A sly smirk crossed his lips.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 8/9/02 6:03:38 pm

PART FORTY-EIGHT:

Snape swept out of his office as Genevieve called behind for him to wait. He ignored her and stormed out of the dungeon and up towards the exit to the castle. Why he didn’t think of the Desidera Potion in the first place was beyond him. That cunning little Granger girl must think she’s one up on me, he thought as he treaded over to the Whomping Willow. Clumsily, he managed to avoid the branches before they did any major damage and he hit the root that caused the tree to freeze. He pulled out his wand, arming himself in case of any unexpected dangers in the tunnel and dropped down to make his journey to the Shrieking Shack.

Slowly, he exited the tunnel and astutely scanned the room. Nothing, he thought. Where are you, you little devil? I know you’re here somewhere. He crept from room to room, stealthily inspecting every shadow for the attacker. Oh, the look on Lupin’s face will be priceless when he comes to find out I not only saved the life of his beloved Genevieve, but also defeated her attacker! He chuckled puckishly and continued his search. But, after probing every corner of the Shrieking Shack, he found no attacker and no pendant for that matter. A nibbling noise was coming from the wall and Snape turned, pointed his wand and poised himself to assault -- a rat?? He looked down at the nasty little vermin and scoffed.

Not wanting to go back to the castle unsuccessful, but feeling like he’d spent more than enough time there, he left the old shack, muttering about a pest repellent potion he wished he’d had and wondering what sort of magic the attacker had used to anticipate his arrival.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

I only have a teency bit of part 49 to post. More to come later! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

**********************************************

PART FORTY-NINE:

Snape’s unsuccessful trip to the Shrieking Shack had put him in a fouler mood than ever before – if that was possible. He miraculously left Harry, Ron and Hermione unpunished that night, however, which was a true feat indeed. Genevieve was commanded by Madam Pomfrey to remain in the hospital wing until further notice, for she looked weaker and paler after she stole out of bed that evening.

It didn’t take long, after the waning of the moon and the end of his isolation, for Lupin to get word of Genevieve’s condition. Panic-stricken, he burst into the hospital wing, past the objectioning Madam Pomfrey, straight to Genevieve’s bedside.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

PART FORTY-NINE, continued

He grabbed a hold of Genevieve, who was sitting upright in her hospital bed and squeezed her tightly in an embrace. She gave a small gasp at the firmness of the hug and Madam Pomfrey cleared her throat warningly and glared at Lupin until he let Genevieve go.

“My confinement’s just ended,” he said quickly. “I met Professor McGonagall in the corridor outside my office on the way to breakfast and she informed me that you were here. part 50
PART FIFTY:

That evening, Lupin was planning a trip out to the Shrieking Shack. He knew Snape had already searched it a couple nights ago, but he wasn’t going to feel satisfied until he explored it himself. He didn’t tell Genevieve – he didn’t want her to worry – and besides, he wouldn’t be gone that long.

While Lupin was traveling the underground tunnel towards the shack, Harry, Hermione & Ron had come to pay another visit to Genevieve, this time with the permission of Professor McGonagall.

“It’s a shame that potion couldn’t show us who was with your pendant,” said Hermione woefully.

“We could have tracked down that slimy bloke had we seen his face,” added Ron.

“I’ll bet Snape went blundering in the Shrieking Shack and scared the culprit away before he could catch him,” said Harry. “I wish Professor Lupin could have gone to check it out. He knows the shack really well.”

“Yes, he does,” proclaimed a voice at the door of the infirmary. “But, were you going to lead him by a leash down there that night, my boy?” asked Snape. “If I do recall, he was still sporting four legs that evening.”

Ron curled his lip up and grumbled under his breath, “What’s he doing here?”

Glaring at Ron, Snape said, “I happen to be delivering the last bit of Lavandula Potion for the invalid. I believe after this dose, Madam Pomfrey will see fit to release you,” he said looking at Genevieve. “And as for the Shrieking Shack, it was completely abandoned – unless you count the disgusting rat that’s inhabiting the festering walls in that dung heap.”

Harry’s eyes began to bulge and Ron nearly fell to the floor. Hermione squealed, “A rat!!”

“Yes,” drawled Snape. “A common, ordinary household pest – revolting little hairy vermin …”

“What a fool,” muttered Harry.

“Did he happen to answer to the name Scabbers?” asked Ron sarcastically.

“And have a missing toe,” added Hermione.

“No -- a silver foot,” said Harry, shaking his head in dismay.

“Would someone like to clue me in as to what’s going on?” asked Genevieve frantically. “What’s this about a rat?”

“No time for all the details right now,” said Harry impatiently. “We’ve got to find Lupin!”

“C’mon,” said Hermione quickly. “Let’s go to his office and tell him what we just realized!”

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub84.ezboard.com/ubistyboo1974. ... boo1974 at: 8/10/02 10:32:33 am

part 51
Again, just a little taste of part 51. I haven't finished it yet <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

**********************************************

PART FIFTY-ONE:

“He’s not here!” cried Hermione hysterically as she, Harry and Ron looked around Professor Lupin’s empty office. “Where could he be?”

“I’ll give you one guess,” said Ron anxiously.

“The Shrieking Shack,” said Harry certainly.

“Ohh,” gasped Hermione. “He’s in terrible danger.”

“More danger than he even realizes,” said Harry soberly. “He doesn’t even suspect the attacker is Wormtail – and what about that silver hand?”

“What about it?” asked Ron forgetfully. “Ohh,” he said, remembering. “The silver hand.”

“What are we going to do?” whimpered Hermione urgently.

“I’ll tell you what you three will do,” boomed Snape’s forceful voice from the entrance of the office. “You’ll go back to your dormitories and let me handle this situation.”

“The way you handled it before?” shot Harry.

“Potter! I’ve had just about enough …” But, Snape didn’t have a chance to finish.

Genevieve stumbled into the office behind Snape, color drained from her face and looking bedraggled. She stood up as tall as she could and declared, “Someone is going to tell me what’s going on here and I mean NOW!!” Her breathing was labored and they could tell it was all she could do to not collapse in a heap on the floor, but she was adamant. She wanted information and no one was leaving the office until she got it.

“There isn’t any time,” pleaded Hermione. “Wormtail’s going to kill Professor Lupin if we don’t get there in time to stop him!”

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

Melisa -- Yes, and I'm so inspired, I thought of more stuff for my fic during the faculty meeting this morning!! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o"> Zoinks!! Too bad I have considerably less time to type all of these ideas up!!

**********************************************
PART FIFTY-TWO:

Remus Lupin crept through the tunnel leading to the Shrieking Shack, thinking to himself. Why would anyone steal the pendant? What could their motive be? Genevieve had shared with him the mystical properties of the moonstone she’d read about in Hermione’s gemology book, but as far as he knew, the pendant he gave her wasn’t the fabled Lune de’Lamant. He had purchased it from the shop in Diagon Alley that sold gems, talismans and amulets – the very shop he’d noticed Genevieve admiring things through the window in back when they’d gone to Diagon Alley to find a wand for her. The moonstone had caught his eye later on, when he’d gone there to pick out a Christmas gift for her. He was amazed when the jeweler told him it was a moonstone – he actually had considered putting it back and getting a nice amber pendant instead, but something had drawn him to it and he couldn’t refuse the urge to buy it. He decided on a silver chain, though the idea seemed a little risky, because he’d noticed Genevieve liked silver trinkets and such – and he figured a thin chain wouldn’t be too dangerous. He’d asked the jeweler to box it up for him and when he’d helped her fasten the chain on Christmas, he only felt a twinge of discomfort when he touched it. The little bit of pain was worth it, he felt, if it made Genevieve happy.

But, why would that stone – one common enough to be bought in a shop in Diagon Alley – be worthy of attacking someone for? Perhaps Genevieve’s suspicions were right. Perhaps the stone was more powerful than he’d realized. If that were the case, what trait was the culprit after? She’d mentioned the stone giving the wearer the power to shapeshift. Many wizards and witches already had the power to transfigure themselves, but what if the thief wasn’t a skilled enough sorcerer to do this? Lupin suspected maybe that was what the attacker was after in the stone.

As he neared the end of the tunnel, he readied his wand – whoever was in there wasn’t going to catch him off guard. He noiselessly crept into the shack from the tunnel opening and examined the room as he entered it. It was empty, but the flicker of candlelight could be seen from the next room. Stealthily, he made his way to the door and could make out the back of a figure standing near the boarded up window, holding a candlestick in his right hand. Lupin’s wand hand was poised, ready to strike if necessary as the figure began to turn around.

A wave of shock washed over Lupin’s entire body. There, standing before him, was Peter Pettigrew, once his friend and now his bitter enemy. The moment it took him to regain his composure was a moment too long, for Pettigrew had his wand in his left hand (which was covered in a dragonhide glove) and had shot out a binding spell at Lupin, rendering him defenseless.

“Good to see you again, old chum,” said Pettigrew, with a look of supreme satisfaction on his face.

“You are no friend of mine,” spat Lupin.

“I use the term loosely, of course,” said Pettigrew, grabbing Lupin’s wand from the ground (he’d dropped it as the binding spell took effect). “You know, the whole ‘trying to kill me thing’ last time we met kind of tipped me off that our friendship was over.”

“You slimy, no good, rat bast- …” Lupin started.

Pettigrew pointed his wand directly at Lupin. “Don’t force me to gag you this time,” he sneered.

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...

Re: Lune de l'amant (A Lupin-Centric Fanfic)part 51 added 8/
PART FIFTY-THREE:

“Kill him?” gasped Genevieve. “Did you say kill? And who in the world is Wormtail?” She felt as though the office was spinning around and around her. What were they talking about? “I demand to know what is going on!” It was by sheer determination alone that she was even still able to stand.

“Wormtail – Peter Pettigrew – is the reason my parents are dead!” blurted out Harry.

A look of confusion crossed Genevieve’s face. Pettigrew – the name sounded vaguely familiar to her. Lupin had mentioned that name before – when they’d cut through the tunnel that leads to the Shrieking Shack to get back to Hogsmeade. He told her about his three friends from school – James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew. Yes, that’s where she’d heard the name before. But, why would a boyhood friend of Lupin’s want to kill him? None of what they were saying was making one iota of sense to her.

“But, they were friends when Lupin went to Hogwarts,” Genevieve began.

“Trust us,” said Ron. “He’s no friend of Lupin’s any longer.”

“We’re losing time!” cried Hermione. “We can’t give you all the details now, but you’ve got to trust us! Professor Lupin is in very serious jeopardy!”

The three headed towards the door to leave the office when Snape opened his mouth to speak. Genevieve shot him a look and told him, “Don’t you dare even think about stopping them!” She followed behind them, and behind her Snape pursued.

He grumbled, “If I can’t stop them, I’m at least coming along to clean up their mess. I have a feeling this won’t be pretty.”

On the way to the Shrieking Shack, Hermione gave Genevieve a condensed account of Pettigrew’s betrayal of the Potters, of their last encounter with him at the Shrieking Shack and of Harry’s last encounter with him. Genevieve shivered in terror when she explained about Pettigrew’s hand – his powerful, silver hand, given to him by the Dark Lord Voldemort himself.

The five emerged from the passageway, wands in hand, all except Genevieve, whose wand was tucked away neatly in the Hospital Wing back at Hogwarts. Suddenly, she felt totally powerless against this treacherous follower of the darkest wizard she’d ever heard of – she wished she’d thought to grab her wand before she’d left the infirmary, but it was all she could do to get out without Madam Pomfrey noticing her, much less nick her wand from the nurse’s possession. They split up – Snape, Genevieve & Hermione went one way and Harry & Ron another – and met back by the passageway several minutes later.

“Nothing!” cried Hermione, when she saw Harry and Ron come back into view.

“No luck here, either,” muttered Ron.

“Where could he have taken him?” asked Harry, puzzled.

“I don’t know,” said Genevieve. “But, look!” She pointed to a headboard to a bed that was lying in splinters on the floor. “Underneath that piece of wood – it’s my pendant!”

<img src=http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/st ...
