Re: i spy with my little eye...
Chapter Five – Housework

Ron received an owl from Hermione a few hours after Ginny received the good news from Harry. She sent word that she’d be turning up at the Burrow two days before Harry’s arrival.

And on the morning of Hermione’s arrival, Molly Weasley called her children in for a family council.

“I want no griping concerning what I’m about to tell you all … your father and I have discussed it and we both feel it’s something you need to be familiar with … something that, in the long run, will be for your own good.”

Fred and George cringed at their mother’s words. Ginny observed Ron’s face turning an odd green shade. She, like her brothers, knew that whatever their Mum was about to tell them probably didn’t mean fun and games for them. They’d heard this sort of preamble before. Only Percy sat looking solemnly at Molly as she continued.

“Both your father and I feel like the four of you,” she turned to Fred, George, Ron and Ginny, “don’t have enough experience with Muggle practices. Percy’s the only one who’s taken Muggle Studies.”

Percy beamed proudly.

“We both would like the four of you to take time this summer to do things the Muggle way. It’ll give you all a deeper understanding and appreciation for Muggles. And I feel the best way to do this is through …” Molly paused for a moment, scurried over to a cupboard in the kitchen, rummaged through it quickly and returned with something behind her back, which she promptly revealed as she said, “… housework!”

Ginny’s mouth gaped, as did her brothers’. Molly Weasley was holding a broomstick. Not a racing broom – a common, everyday, Muggle-model housekeeping broom.

“And what do you expect us to do with that?” asked Ron in astonishment.

“Maybe you ought to ask Mum if she’ll let you have it for Quidditch – it ought to fly faster than yours,” George whispered loudly in Ron’s ear.

“It’s not even charmed,” said Ron in an irritated tone.

“So, what’s your point?” said Fred with a smirk.

“Enough!” said Molly quickly. “Ginny, you’ll be sweeping … Fred and George, I want you two dusting and polishing … and Ron, you do the dishes.”

“What about Percy?” said Ron, who was now thoroughly annoyed. “Hermione’s coming today and I have … stuff to do. You mean to say that Percy doesn’t have to lift a finger since he took Muggle Studies?”

“Yes, Ronald … that’s what I mean to say,” said Molly sternly. “Besides, your brother has more important things to do.”

“Speaking of which,” said Percy in a stiff voice, “I need to get to the office.”

“Good-bye, dear,” said Molly, planting a kiss on his cheek. “See you at dinner.”

Percy Disapparated with a pop.

“Now, you four,” Molly said turning back to the twins, Ron and Ginny. “Get busy! The sooner you all get to work, the sooner you’ll get finished! Hermione and Harry will be tickled to have such a spick and span house to stay in when they get here.”

Molly said all this as if it would inspire her children to fly out of their seats and buzz about the house, cleaning like a bevy of worker bees. On the contrary, her words only caused the already gloomy expressions on their faces to become even gloomier.

“I have to go into town … I want to pick up a few extra provisions, since we’ll be having company.” She winked at Ron and Ginny. “I’ll be back later this afternoon.” Molly wrapped a shawl around her shoulders and grabbed a large handbag and Disapparated before any one of them could utter any protests.

“Of all the confounded things our parents have come up with, …” said Fred.

“This has got to take the prize for the most ridiculous,” added George.

“Well, I’ll be hog-tied if I’m going to dust and polish every knick-knack in this house without magic,” said Fred stubbornly.

“Mum’s off her rocker if she thinks I’m using that feathery thing instead of my wand,” said George. He motioned to a feather duster Molly had put next to the Muggle broom. “I wonder how many feathers Errol had to give up for that thing!”

Ron laughed. Fred and George whipped out their wands and charmed the entire living room to be dust-free.

“What Mum doesn’t know, won’t hurt her,” said Fred with a wink. He and George disappeared up the stairs to their room.

“Hermione’s going to be here any minute,” said Ron, wringing his hands. “I’ve got to do it, too. I’ve got to charm the dishes … Fred and George are right, what Mum doesn’t know …”

Within minutes, the pile of dirty dishes that were piled in a wobbly tower in the sink were washed, dried and put into the appropriate cupboard.

And a moment later, a noise from the fireplace erupted, followed by a flash of green, as Hermione Granger appeared, via the Floo network.

“Remind me to thank you father for connecting us to the network,” said Hermione as she emerged from the fireplace, dusting the ashes and soot from her robes.

Ron hurried over to greet her, clapping her into a tight embrace and whispering something to her that Ginny couldn’t hear.

“Hello, Ginny,” said Hermione warmly as Ron released her from their hug. “How’s your summer been? Have you heard from Harry much?” She grinned as she asked the last question.

“Oh, yes,” said Ginny, who was turning slightly pink.

“Only everyday,” added Ron, nudging his sister playfully.

“Well, what are we up to today?” asked Hermione as she tugged her belongings out of the fireplace, with Ron’s help.

Before Ron could say anything at all, Ginny exasperatedly recounted her mother and father’s wishes to educate them in the ways of Muggles, beginning with housework. She, much to Ron’s obvious relief, neglected to tell Hermione exactly how Ron’s and the twins’ tasks were completed.

“So, I guess I’d better get this over and done with,” Ginny said, picking up what she had now come to think of as an instrument of torture. “Why Mum’s got the notion that we should learn to tidy up like Muggles is beyond me,” huffed Ginny as she gripped the Muggle broom tightly.

Ron shrugged. “I dunno,” he said. “But I’m glad you got the sweeping duties. Just imagine the shame of having to use a broomstick for sweeping the floor!” He laughed as Ginny waved the broom threateningly at him.

“I’d be glad to help,” said Hermione, reaching to take the broom from Ginny. “I’ve swept the floor loads of times with a regular broomstick.”

“No thanks,” said Ginny gloomily. “If Mum thinks I should learn how to use a broom the Muggle way, maybe it is important.” She sighed. “Am I at least holding it properly?”

“M-hmm,” said Hermione. “Now, just sweep it across the floor until its picked up all the dirt and dust.”

Ginny looked longingly at her wand. It would be a snap just to charm the broom into doing the sweeping for her. Or better yet, do a spell to make all the grime on the floor disappear all together. She looked back down at the plain Muggle broom and sighed once more.

“Here goes nothing,” she said as she began to sweep.

Ron chuckled under his breath and Hermione called out words of encouragement as Ginny awkwardly made her way across the kitchen floor.

“How’s that?” she called out as her little pile of dirt grew larger.

“Not bad,” said Hermione. “Now, you’ve got to use this to collect it.”

“What’s that?” asked Ginny curiously as Hermione handed her a little tin tray with a handle.

“It’s a dust pan,” said Hermione. “You sweep the dirt onto it, then toss it in the dust bin.”

“Do we even have a dust bin?” asked Ron seriously.

“Hush,” said Hermione to Ron. Hermione handed the dust pan to Ginny, who apprehensively took it from her.

Ginny nearly toppled over as she tried to sweep all the particles of filth and debris off of the kitchen floor. The broom handle was swaying to and fro as she tried to balance.

“Stop laughing,” Hermione told Ron, who was holding his stomach from cackling at the sight of his sister trying to use the dust pan. “You should have seen me trying to fly on a broomstick for the first time,” she said to Ginny reassuringly. “You’re doing just fine.” She turned back to Ron, “I’d have given anything to see you doing the dishes,” she said with a look of supreme amusement.

As Ginny shook the dirt from the pan into the bin, she said, with a bit of mischief in her voice, “Me, too!”

<img src="http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/image ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub129.ezboard.com/bmajiklmoonsr ... boo1974 at: 12/23/02 5:40:36 pm

Chapter Six – What’s Simple Is True

To a mere outsider, it may have seemed as if Molly Weasley was preparing for the arrival of the Minister of Magic himself, and not simply a friend of her children from school. She had her charges hustling and bustling around the Burrow like house-elves, trying to get everything in order at the last possible moment.

“It’s not like Harry’s never been here before, Mum,” protested Ron as he was forced to watch a pot boiling on the cooker, while Mrs. Weasley fumbled around looking for a cookbook – Marvelous Party Cakes: Charming Recipes to Amaze Your Guests at the Next Birthday Fete!

“Well, he never has been here on his birthday,” replied Molly, tugging the book out from behind a row of well-worn cookbooks. “Ah, here it is!” she said with satisfaction. Then her face changed to a slightly horrified expression as she saw the pot boil over while Ron was absent-mindedly munching on a biscuit. “Put that down and mind what you’re doing, son!” gasped Molly, running towards the stove. “You’ll have dinner ruined!” she exclaimed in an appalled voice.

“Why’d you trust me to the cooking in the first place?” said Ron, backing away from the stove as if it were a dangerous weapon. Molly had waved her wand quickly to undo Ron’s mess and the pot continued to simmer quietly. “Why not get Ginny in here?” He gestured to Ginny, who was back from carting out a armful of cutlery and crockery to the tables Fred and George had set up in the garden earlier. Hermione had been helping her and was still outdoors, folding napkins and arranging place settings.

“Because I’ve already asked Ginny to tend to setting up the tables in the garden, that’s why. Now, strap on a pinny and help me get the cake started!” Molly handed him a floral apron and his face screwed up in total revulsion.

“Mum, you can’t be serious! What did I ever do to deserve this?” Ron said, aghast.

“I just don’t want you getting your clothes all sullied,” said Molly, shaking the apron at him for him to take it. “You’re so stubborn, Ron!” She swished her wand and transformed the flower-patterned apron to a plain maroon one. “There, dear – is that more to your liking?”

“Thanks, Mum,” said Ron dully, taking the apron reluctantly.

*****

For the time being, Molly had given up on the notion of giving her children a deeper understanding and appreciation for Muggles by having them tend to household duties without an ounce of magic – there simply wasn’t time before Harry came. She promised to take up the mission again after the party, however, much to the entire household’s dismay, save Percy.

“I’m so glad your father was able to get time off from work to be home for Harry’s party today,” said Molly, who was putting the finishing touches on Harry’s birthday cake.

Ron had discarded his apron and sat slumped on the stairs, looking very drained.

“You have flour in your hair,” said Hermione, who was smirking just a bit. She was noticeably relishing the thought that Ron had spent the morning in the kitchen baking with his mother and her face showed how she obviously found that to be rather endearing. She stroked his hair so the flour came cascading down on the steps.

“You’d better not leave that there,” Ron yawned. “Mum’ll have a conniption fit if she sees it.”

“When’s Harry getting here?” asked Fred, who was rubbing an ache in his side. He and George had just finished pitching an old Muggle canopy – obtained by their father on one of his numerous raids – over the dining tables outside.

“Any time now, I imagine,” said Molly, who was sifting powdered sugar over a tray of pastries.

“Can we have a bit of that to tide us over till he gets here?” asked George, looking at the pastries longingly.

“No!” said Molly, swatting his hand away from the tray. “He’ll be here soon enough and you can wait like the rest of us! Honestly, you’d have half the food eaten before he even walks in through the …”

The sound of an approaching car distracted Molly and everyone else.

“They’re here!” exclaimed Ginny, who was no longer able to contain her excitement. She dashed to the window and watched as the Auror on post outside walked briskly to the car – another on loan from the Ministry – and escorted Arthur, Percy and Harry from its back seat. Another Auror sat in the front, next to the Ministry driver – they exchanged a few short words and, after the driver had unloaded Harry’s belongings from the trunk, they departed.

Harry paused for a moment outside the Burrow – Ginny saw him gaze at the rustic house with a look of satisfaction on his face. He breathed the country air deep into his lungs and heaved a great, fulfilling sigh before he followed Arthur and Percy indoors.

A sea of red-heads – and one brown-head – swarmed him as he entered the house and a chorus of “Happy Birthday” rang out – Ginny was squished in the back of the flock of people. She had fought to get to the front – to greet Harry first – but she was the smallest of the lot and was miserably unsuccessful.

“Clear off,” she muttered, as she was being flattened between Fred’s and George’s elbows and her toes had just been nearly pulverized by Ron’s big feet.

“All right, now,” said Arthur finally. “Let the boy breath!”

Arthur pulled Harry’s trunk the rest of the way in through the door and Harry nearly collapsed on it, after being the recipient of such a spirited greeting. Everyone backed away, giving Harry some much needed air. But although he looked like he’d just survived a hurricane – his hair looked even more dishevelled than normal and his clothes were in a terribly scruffy state after being bombarded by half a dozen people – he had an enormous grin plastered across his face.

“It’s great to be here,” he said at last. His eyes scanned the warm, welcoming faces of the Weasleys and Hermione and finally came to rest on Ginny. “It’s really great to be here.”

*****

Author’s Note: I borrowed the chapter title from a song by Jewel. What’s Simple Is True – the phrase strikes me as an expression that might cross Harry’s mind whenever he sees or thinks of the Burrow. Everything at the Burrow is down-to-earth and quaint, but so true … there’s so much sincerity in that house. The Weasleys are such a natural family. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

<img src="http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/image ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub129.ezboard.com/bmajiklmoonsr ... boo1974 at: 12/30/02 1:29:42 pm

Chapter Seven – The Cake

Molly Weasley’s culinary masterpiece sat perched upon a cake platter that was more like a pedestal than a serving plate – white porcelain, with a scalloped border of hand-painted cherries and grapes, separated by bold stripes of teal – and it was charmed to play “Happy Birthday” like a plinking old music box, as well – this antique had been in Molly’s family for generations and it was a Weasley family tradition to have it present on a family member’s birthday. So the tradition was passed on to include an honorary member of the Weasley family on one overly hot afternoon in July.

The banquet Molly had prepared had been properly devoured and the time had come for the pinnacle of any birthday meal – the cake. And what a cake it was – Molly had made sure that Harry’s first-ever birthday party wasn’t lacking for anything and she was positively not going to be negligent about the birthday cake. With the help of Marvelous Party Cakes and the assistance of the very disinclined Ron, she had managed to prepare no less than the epitome of birthday desserts.

Everyone ooh-ed and ahh-ed over the layers of confectionary goodness that sat atop the heirloom platter – it was a work of art, as far as cakes go at any rate – dripping with beads of icing and pounds of frosting. The sides were garnished with sugar-sprinkles in a dazzling array of colors and on the top, the words Happy Birthday, Harry were written in a fancy script with a golden sugary glaze.

Arthur held out his hand as Ron handed him a pack of spiral candles.

“Sixteen, isn’t it, Harry?” Arthur asked with a wink. Harry nodded.

Arthur arranged the candles and with a flick of his wand, he set them ablaze. Molly took out her wand and set the cake platter to play its clink-clanky rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Everyone joined in as the music began,

“Happy Birthday, to you! Happy Birthday, to you!
Happy Birthday, Dear Harry!
Happy Birthday, to you!”

Fred and George’s voices rang out the loudest and they clapped Harry on the shoulders as they belted out the final note.

“Go on, then!” said Fred. “Extinguish the bonfire so we can dig in!”

“I agree!” added George, who was positively salivating over the cake. “On with it, Harry!”

Harry drew in a great breath and just as he was about to exhale …

“Don’t forget to make a wish!” Hermione blurted out suddenly.

Harry nearly toppled into the huge cake.

“Thanks for the reminder, Hermione,” said Harry, steadying himself.

Ginny clasped her hands together anxiously as she watched Harry put out the candles. She wondered what Harry had wished for – she knew what she was wishing for. The party was spectacular, but Ginny was wishing for a few stolen moments alone with him. She had barely gotten to say three words to him since he’d arrived. When the festivities died down, all Ginny wanted to do was to spend a little time with him – and only him.

*****

Author’s Note: Molly’s heirloom cake platter is actually a description of the cake platter we use in my own family on birthdays. Chapter 8 (Modified)
Chapter Eight - The Mystery Gift

“Who sent that one, Harry?” asked Ginny as she helped lug his gifts back to the house after cake, with Ron and Hermione. Harry had quickly stuffed a small parcel into the pocket of his trousers, but Ginny had noticed.

“Er … Hagrid, I think,” said Harry hurriedly.

“Then he sent you two gifts,” said Ginny, observing the tag on one of the parcels she was carrying. “This one’s from Hagrid, too.”

“Oh, it might not have been from him, then,” said Harry vaguely.

“Too hot to have opened these out there,” said Ron as he stumbled indoors, dropping his share of the cargo on a small table. His brow was beaded with sweat.

“I reckon I’ll just open the rest of these later anyhow,” said Harry, setting a few more parcels down next to the ones Ron discarded. He had opened the gifts from Hermione and the Weasleys at the party, but there were numerous others that he hadn’t touched, partly because it was too uncomfortable outdoors in the summer heat and partly because there were just too many to tackle all at once. “I don’t think I’ve ever gotten so many birthday presents in my entire life, let alone for just one birthday,” he added as he watched Hermione and Ginny put down several more parcels in the stack. “It’s just too much, really.”

“It was Hermione’s idea to tell all the Gryffindors to send you birthday greetings – since we were going to go all out and throw you a real party this year … but we never expected them to go overboard like this and send so many gifts. I don’t think I know some of these people, come to think.” Ron looked down at one of the tags. “And look, even Wood sent you something this year – I’ll bet it’s that new Quidditch book I heard about – there was an advert in the Daily Prophet a few weeks ago – it’s a limited edition print, I think.” Ron’s eyes were growing larger. “Open it up, Harry!”

“Later,” said Harry. It looked as if he were trying to fight back a yawn.

“You look exhausted,” Ginny told him quietly. “Why don’t you rest a bit?”

“That’s not such a bad idea,” said Harry. “Maybe for an hour or so.” He touched Ginny’s shoulder and followed Ron upstairs. Hermione and Ginny followed behind, heading towards Ginny’s room.

*****

“What’s wrong, Ginny?” asked Hermione, after a fashion. Ginny had been staring idly out of the window for some time.

“Nothing,” said Ginny, in an unconvincing voice.

Hermione raised an eyebrow. “I’ve known you too long, Ginny Weasley. Something is troubling you – admit it.”

“Well, I guess I’d just like some time with Harry,” said Ginny.

“Some time alone with Harry?” asked Hermione keenly.

Ginny nodded.

“That can be arranged,” said Hermione with a wink. “Leave it to me.”

Ginny gave a half-hearted smile.

“What else, Ginny? You’re not getting off so easy – I know there’s something else. It’s written all over your face.”

Ginny sighed. “Oh, it’s stupid, really – I don’t even want to say. I’m just behaving like a baby.”

“What?” asked Hermione.

“When we were bringing the gifts in – Harry saw one in the pile and stuffed it into his pocket really quickly – he didn’t think I noticed and when I mentioned it, he acted really peculiar – like he didn’t want me to know who it was from.”

“Oh,” said Hermione softly.

“Oh!” repeated Ginny. “What’s that supposed to mean? You know something, don’t you?”

Hermione was looking slightly guilty.

“Hermione Granger! If you know something, it’s your responsibility … your obligation … your duty, as my friend, to tell me!”

Hermione’s expression was twisting from guilt to mild amusement

“There’s nothing funny about this, Hermione!” exclaimed Ginny.

“I really don’t know who it was from, but I suspect …”

“Please, don’t tell me it was from Cho Chang!” said Ginny before she could stop herself. She clasped her hands over her mouth after she had spoken the words.

Hermione laughed outright. “Goodness, no! That’s not who I was thinking at all …”

“There’s someone else?” Ginny’s eyes were welling up with tears.

“No, no, no,” Hermione put an arm around Ginny’s shoulders. “That’s not what I meant at all … it’s for Harry to tell you, really. But if it’s from who I think it is ... oh, don't worry. Really, Ginny … calm down!"

Ginny sniffled. “I shouldn't worry? Are you sure?”

“I’m positive, Ginny.”

*****

It’s not a big deal, thought Ginny as she mindlessly beat in time on her bed to the tune coming from the W.W.N. I’m such an idiot for getting suspicious over a silly little birthday gift. Anyhow, Hermione had assured her; it wasn’t as she’d immediately feared. Harry wasn’t having a secret liaison with anyone. She realized how stupid it was to even jump to such a ridiculous conclusion. She hoped Harry would never realize how childishly she’d acted – but curiosity was still getting the better of her. Harry had obviously not wanted her to see that gift – if it wasn’t from a girl, then who was it from? Who did Harry not want her to know about?

The song ended, but Ginny continued to bang her hands on her bed.

“I wonder if Harry’s rested enough?” she said, almost to herself.

“I don’t know,” answered Hermione. “Anxious, are you?” She was grinning broadly.

Ginny tossed a pillow at her. “Shut up, you!” she exclaimed, but couldn’t suppress a fit of giggles. Hermione pelted the pillow right back at her.

“I’ll go do your dirty work for you and check if you’d like,” she said, all too innocently.

“A wee bit anxious yourself, eh?” said Ginny, putting on an angelic face.

“Just tending to my responsibilities, obligations and duties,” Hermione said nobly.

Ginny twisted her expression. “I don’t even want to know how that pertains to my brother,” she said.

Hermione laughed. “Just give me a few minutes and I’ll have Ron out of the way, then Harry’s all yours.”

“Thanks, Hermione,” said Ginny, but she still had a look of revulsion on her face as she tried to shake visions of Hermione “distracting” Ron from her thoughts.

As she waited, Ginny tried to think of ways to broach the topic of the mystery gift with Harry. Nothing at all clever or witty was coming to mind. While she considered letting the matter go altogether, she heard Hermione’s voice, rather loudly, from the hall.

“So, Ron,” said Hermione, almost in a shout from the hallway, “you’ll sit out in the garden with me? Maybe Ginny’d like to go for a walk with Harry while we sit out there.”

Ginny took that as her cue. As she listened to Ron’s and Hermione’s footsteps descend the staircase, she slowly walked to her door and opened it. She walked leisurely up to Ron’s room and knocked softly.

“Come in,” said Harry.

Ginny opened the door bit-by-bit and peered around the wood panels. “I didn’t wake you, I hope?” she asked in a hushed tone.

“No,” said Harry. He ran his hands across his head, in a futile attempt to straighten his untidy hair. Apparently realizing it was pointless, he stopped and got up from the cot where he’d been sitting and walked over to Ginny.

“I guess Ron’s gone off with Hermione,” Ginny said casually, though she knew very well that Ron had gone off with Hermione – Hermione had all but blown a horn and announced it to all of Ottery St. Catchpole.

Harry nodded. Ginny flushed as she noticed him gazing at her hands, which were nervously occupied by wringing the knob of the door on both sides. He freed them from the door handles and took them into his own.

“What’samatter?” he said groggily, stifling a yawn. Ginny noticed how bleary his green eyes appeared.

“Oh, you’re still tired – I shouldn’t have disturbed you – I’ll go,” Ginny said fretfully.

“I’m a little exhausted, but that’s because I couldn’t sleep last night and this afternoon was such a great time.” He smiled and pulled her a little closer. “Don’t go.”

All thoughts of inquiring about the mystery present filtered out of her brain and she became lost in pools of green – but the clatter of her mother in the kitchen below awakened her to the fact that it wouldn’t be prudent to have Molly Weasley walk in on this scene, no matter how innocent it may be. Seeing her only daughter in the arms of a sixteen-year-old boy in a bedroom would throw her mother into cardiac arrest no doubt.

“Want to go for a walk?” asked Ginny as Harry began to fidget with the chain of the necklace she was wearing.

“Just the two of us?” asked Harry hopefully.

Ginny grinned. Boy after my own heart, she thought. “Just the two of us,” she said aloud.

*****

Ginny and Harry had excused themselves from the Burrow, but had been fairly disappointed when the Auror on post invited himself along for their walk on the footpath that led beyond the house.

So much for alone time, thought Ginny with a sigh as the unwelcome guest followed them along the trail. He kept his distance, but his presence was nonetheless disconcerting.

Despite their company, Ginny held tight to Harry’s hand and decided she could muster up the nerve to casually ask him about the gift.

“You can tell me to mind my own business if I’m overstepping any bounds by asking you this,” began Ginny. So much for casual, she thought gloomily.

Harry looked at Ginny dolefully. He obviously had no clue what she was about to say to him and he was clearly concerned.

Ginny went on. “That gift you tucked away so quickly before – who is it from?”

Harry didn’t say anything at first. Ginny became a little more anxious than she already had been.

“If you’d asked me that question a year ago, I probably would have told you to mind your own business,” he said. He smiled at her. But now I suppose it’s about time I told you – there’s no point in keeping it from you. I trust you.

“Trust me?” Ginny said, quite baffled.

Harry inched in a little closer, so the Auror who was striding just paces behind them wouldn’t overhear. “It was from my godfather,” whispered Harry. “Sirius Black.”

Ginny audibly gasped and squeezed Harry’s hand to the point that he said,

“Oww, Ginny!” though he laughed a little as he said it. Chapter 9
Chapter Nine – Secrets Revealed

Ginny lay in her bed and sorted through the story Harry had told her about his godfather. For all of Ginny’s life, she had counted Sirius Black’s squalid tale as one of the scariest in circulation in the wizarding world. For children who grew up with witches and wizards for parents, Sirius Black was comparable to the boogeyman in the Muggle world – a mad, crazed, lunatic of a murderer. Hearing the story for the first time when she was very young made her quite jumpy for nearly a month afterwards, especially when Fred or George would jump out and laugh maniacally at her for no good reason, other than to scare the living daylights out of her.

Ginny sighed as she listened to the sounds in the night – Hermione’s steady breathing as she slept, the sound of the ghoul in the attic thumping every now and again, the soft hoot of Hedwig from Ron’s room, two flights above.

Ron must’ve left his window open, too, thought Ginny as she gazed out of her own. A soft, summer breeze was blowing outside and she could hear the leaves of the trees rustling and the musical sounds of the wind chimes her mother had hanging in the garden.

Her newfound knowledge of Sirius Black was enough to make Ginny speechless as she’d sat in Ron’s room just hours before, listening as Harry recounted what had really happened so many years ago – as he’d told her the truth about who the real murderer was. Ron and Hermione had been there, too, interjecting every so often, but Harry had told the tale. And he said there was more – he promised to tell her everything tomorrow.

Ginny couldn’t sleep. She had too many thoughts buzzing around in her head to get any rest. She slipped noiselessly from her bed and tiptoed to the open window and peered down. Another Auror – the one who always took the night watch – stood looking like a prison guard on duty outside the house. She knew the Aurors had come to protect the family – and Harry – but they made her feel like a captive in her own home. She was either stuck to the confinement of the Burrow or she had to endure the constant surveillance of the Ministry sentinels. Ginny wondered when life would ever get back to normal. She crept softly back to bed and tossed and turned some more. It was going to be a long night.

*****

She must have eventually gotten to sleep, because before she knew it, sunlight was glinting through the window and a morning songbird was chirping on the sill. Hermione was already dressed and pulling her bushy brown hair into a ponytail as Ginny sat up and stretched.

“I’m going to head down for breakfast,” said Hermione as she tightened the elastic around her hair. “Will you be down soon?”

Ginny yawned and nodded. “As soon as I get dressed. I won’t be long.”

She pulled on a pair of jeans and buttoned up a blouse, then smoothed out her tangled red tresses with a hairbrush. Normally, she’d stumble down in the morning with mussed hair, wearing a dressing gown, but not with Harry there. She suddenly had a memory of the first time she’d seen Harry in her home – she’d come into the kitchen in her nightclothes and there he was. She nearly died of horror that day, considering what he was thinking, seeing her in a nightdress. She laughed at her own silliness. Ever since, she’d made it a point to be properly dressed for breakfast when he was visiting – not that she never wanted him to see her in her nightdress at breakfast ever again …

Satisfied that she’d hidden the fact that she just rolled out of bed, she headed down the zigzagged flight of stairs. Everyone else – save Percy, who’d obviously already Disapparated to work – was gathered around the wooden table, munching sausages and fried eggs. Molly waved her wand at a skillet upon seeing her daughter’s arrival for breakfast.

“How many eggs, dear?” said Molly.

“Just one,” said Ginny. “After all that food yesterday, I’m not very hungry.”

“You can’t just have one egg,” protested Molly. She whipped her wand around again and plopped several sausage links and two slices of toast down onto her plate.

Ginny groaned. “Pass the pumpkin juice, please,” she said to Fred.

“Here you are, Princess,” Fred said with a wink. “Have a nice lie-in?”

“I didn’t mean to sleep late,” said Ginny. “I had trouble nodding off last night.”

George whispered something to Fred and Fred laughed raucously. Molly gave the twins a cautionary look.

“After the meal, I want you two to tend to the dishes … without wands,” said Molly sternly.

The twins groaned.

“Arthur,” said Molly, turning to her husband. “Are you going to be long at the office today?”

“Can’t say,” said Arthur, putting his coffee cup down. “Plenty to keep the Ministry busy these days.” He glanced over at Harry, but said nothing more. “And on that note, I suppose I’d better be off to take care of business – the sooner I get there, the sooner I can get back.” He kissed his wife good-bye, wished the others a good day and Disapparated.

Molly turned to Fred and George. “Get to work, gentlemen,” she said, tossing them a dishtowel apiece. “And what do you lot have planned for the day?” she asked Ron, Harry, Hermione and Ginny.

Ginny piped up first. “I’d like to enjoy the day outdoors,” she said. “But it’s awfully difficult while we’re being shadowed.” She gestured to the door, where the Auror stood, just outside. “Couldn’t we give him the slip, just for today? Please, Mum?”

“Absolutely not,” said Molly.

“She just wants some privacy while she and Harry snog is all, Mum,” snorted George, under his breath.

“And I’m sure Ron and Hermione wouldn’t mind, either,” added Fred quietly.

Molly had obviously not heard them, but Ginny had and was reddening feverishly.

“If you go outside, you’ll be accompanied. She’d always heard her brothers complain that Harry was half-starved a Privet Drive. As long as Molly Weasley was around, he’d never be underfed.

The company of five trudged along the footpath that led out of the garden, past a woodland of gnarled trees and eventually to a pond. A ramshackle little shed stood beside it and a garden of wildflowers grew around it.

“Oh, this is lovely,” beamed Hermione as she took in the picturesque landscape.

Ron made a harrumphing sound and said, “Yeah, it would be even lovelier if we could trap Dark Agent Man in the shed, so we could have a bit of privacy.”

“Looks like he’s keeping his distance, though,” commented Harry. “If we’re discrete, we can talk out here.”

“Where’d we leave off last night?” asked Ron. “I think you’d just told Ginny about Pettigrew – maybe we should tell her about Scabbers, as well.” His face looked slightly pitiful as he mentioned the name of his old pet.

“Your old rat?” asked Ginny curiously. “How does he figure in?”

Ginny gawped as she heard about Scabbers’ true identity. “He lived in our house, Ron!” gasped Ginny in disbelief. “I fed him cheese and saved him the time he fell into that gnomehole!” Ginny was looking positively scandalized. “I should have left him for gnomefood!”

“I suppose to tell this accurately, you ought to go back and tell Ginny about the Marauders, Harry,” said Hermione.

“The who?” asked Ginny inquisitively. They were giving her so much information – so much unbelievable information – that she trying hard to process it all. Sirius Black was not the fiend she’d always thought he was, but Ron’s old pet rat was. It was mind-boggling.

“The Marauders,” repeated Harry. “A nickname for my Dad’s circle of friends while he was at Hogwarts.”

“And who was in this circle of friends?” inquired Ginny.

“Besides my father, it was Sirius Black, Professor Lupin and …” Harry took in a breath before he finished. “And Peter Pettigrew.”

“They were friends with a would-be murderer?” said Ginny in an astonished voice. “How awful – and Professor Lupin was a friend of your father’s, too? Now, that I can believe – he’s a very kind man.” She smiled fondly in memory of her old Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

Harry told Ginny all about the Marauders’ exploits – the ones he knew about, at any rate – and about Professor Lupin’s “condition.” Ginny hadn’t acted as surprised at that revelation as the others might have thought she should have – she’d always suspected something was peculiar about him the year he taught at Hogwarts. Harry went on to tell how the other Marauders had illegally become Animagi to keep Lupin company during his monthly transformations.

His tale continued and he told her about Pettigrew’s betrayal – about his treacherous act in revealing the Potter’s secret to Voldemort – how he was ultimately responsible for the murder of Harry’s parents.

Ginny had noticed the color drain from Harry’s face as he’d spoken the last words. She didn’t care if Ron and Hermione were right there. She didn’t care if there was an Auror on the other side of the pond, watching them with hawk eyes. She reached out her arms to him and hugged him tightly, tears welling up in her brown eyes.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispered in his ear, recognizing that it would take so much more than simple words to ever mend the damage wrought from Pettigrew’s deceitfulness. She knew that Voldemort had killed his parents. She knew what a cold, heartless, merciless act that was – but to add to that the unfaithfulness of someone who was supposed to be a friend …

Ginny shuddered as Harry returned the embrace. For a moment, Ginny pretended the others weren’t there – that it was just the two of them. She let comfort flow through her, her arms and body acting as conductors to soothe his pain away – the hurt brought on from having to detail such terrible memories again.

Hermione spoke at last, breaking the silence and the peaceful moment. “It’s past noon,” she said softly.

“Yeah, Mum’ll probably have quite a spread prepared by now,” said Ron. “We ought to get back to the house – Besides, I think all the blanks have been filled in for Ginny.”

*****

Author's Note: Just want to thank Tracie again, for catching my mistakes. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
