Chapter 10
Chapter Ten - By The Book

Ginny watched the Auror take his position near the door. He coolly shoved the rusty cauldron that was blocking his place aside with his dragon-hide booted foot and stood like a soldier at attention as she, Harry, Ron and Hermione entered the house.

On the table in the kitchen, a spread of sandwiches and other luncheon food was set out, plus a note from Molly. Ron picked up the letter and read it aloud.

Had to go into the village for a bit. Be sure to eat a good lunch. Fred and George have left for Lee Jordan’s. Please don’t burn the house down or be a nuisance to the Auror while I’m gone.

“As if we’d burn down the house,” chuckled Ron. “That’s more Fred and George’s technique. And as for being a nuisance to the Auror – I think he’s far more annoying to us than we are to him.”

After they’d eaten their fill of the sandwiches Molly had left for them, Hermione cleared her throat and said to Ron,

“There’s something you need to help me with … upstairs …”

Ron looked dully at her. He’d obviously gotten too much sun out by the pond – his nose was pink with burn and his expression was worn-out. “Help with what? Not holiday homework, I hope … Hermione, we have a whole month …”

“Not homework,” said Hermione, furrowing her brow at him.

Ron’s so thick, thought Ginny. Hermione was obviously trying to give both couples some alone time before Molly returned, but if Ron didn’t catch on soon, they’d all be out of luck.

Hermione glared at him fiercely and Ron finally seemed to get the picture.

“Ohhh, not homework … but that other thing I was going to help you with.” He winked at Hermione as if he was deceiving both Ginny and Harry – which he clearly was not – they were both trying desperately to keep straight faces.

Harry shook his head as Ron followed Hermione upstairs. Ginny moved from the chair where she had been sitting over to the settee where Harry was, to be beside him.

“I’ve missed you,” she said quietly, stroking her hands across his face. She lightly ran a finger over his lips and trembled as he calmly kissed it.

“I’ve missed you, too,” he said as he lowered her hand from his mouth.

Ginny felt her pulse quicken as he shifted his body even closer to hers – one more move on her part and she’d be in his lap. She definitely didn’t think that’d be such an unpleasant location to be – she was practically there as it were …

His hands were cradling her head as he kissed her gently – hers were exploring the gathers in his shirt as she moved them across his back, massaging it as they embraced. The warm, fluidity of his kisses were making her skin all but boil …

Last spring, Hermione had talked to her about some Muggle author’s works she was reading at her parents’ behest – William Shakespeare. She shared with her a terribly tragic romance – she’d cried her eyes out when Hermione told her the story – but one line was jumping back to her memory as she experienced the pleasure of the moment. Harry definitely kissed by the book.

Ginny didn’t think anything would reel them out of the hold they had on one another – months of being apart had taken its toll and having been together again for mere days but not really being able to be together had been all but insufferable – but the sound of Molly Weasley’s arm on the clock creakily moving from At The Market to Home reeled Ginny out quicker than she had thought humanly possible.

The arm clicked in place almost the same instant as a faint Pop! sounded and Molly Weasley appeared in the kitchen clutching two armfuls of groceries. Ginny and Harry instinctively slid away from each other and hastily smoothed out their garments. Molly hadn’t noticed either of them and Ginny contemplated whether or not she should nip upstairs to tell Ron and Hermione that Mum was back.

It was too late. Molly’s eyes had moved from the kitchen to the settee and to Ginny and Harry. She glanced around the rest of the room, no doubt looking for the others.

“Where’s your brother?” Molly asked Ginny in a mildly suspicious tone. “And Hermione,” she tacked on.

“Homework,” choked Ginny, hoping against hope her mother didn’t walk any closer to her. She had no idea what state she was in and it was all she needed for her mother to come over and point out anything … embarrassing.

But Molly seemed too preoccupied to notice. “Do me a favor and get him, would you? I heard from your father while you were out. A colleague of his is joining us for dinner this evening and I could do with a little help…”

“Someone from the Ministry is coming here for dinner?” asked Ginny, her mouth hanging slack in surprise. “But Dad never has business dinners here …”

“Well, he’s having one this evening, isn’t he? And you and your brother better make jolly sure you lend me a hand so everything’s in order when Mr. Fury arrives …”

“Mr. Fury?” said Harry.

“Sebastian Fury,” replied Molly. “He works for the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad at the Ministry – graduated Hogwarts with Charlie, if I recall correctly.” She flipped a couple pots and pans from a cupboard, and then spun to look at Ginny, rather frantically. “Go on … now, Ginny! Fetch your brother! I have hardly enough time as it is!”

*****

Molly Weasley had gone lax once again in regards to her “no wands” rule. Short notice about her unexpected dinner guest had forced her into allowing her children to use magic to help with preparations.

“Fred and George aren’t going to be back for dinner, so that leaves five of us – assuming Percy leaves the office in time – plus, Harry and Hermione – and, of course, Mr. Fury. Set eight places, will you, Ron?”

Ron was busy magically slicing a loaf of bread as his mother beckoned him to set the table.

“I can't rightly do two things at once, can I, Mum?” he griped.

“Now you know how I feel,” answered Molly huffily.

“I’ll take care of it, Mrs. Weasley,” said Harry, taking the dishes from the countertop and arranging them at the table.

“Thank you, dear,” said Molly with a warm smile. As she peeked into a simmering, self-stirring pot, she clapped her hands together and said, “Ahh, I think everything’s in order now – I do so like do see a meal done as it should be – I think Mr. Fury will be impressed.”

“Why’s he coming, Mum?” asked Ron as he and Hermione placed slices of bread into a small wickerwork breadbasket.

“To be honest, I don’t know. Your father was sketchy on the details.” She took the breadbasket from Hermione and set it on the table, then got a look of sudden horror on her face. “Ginny! Run out front and shoo the chickens to the back of the house. I don’t want Mr. Fury to see them pecking about when he gets here.”

Ginny looked dismayed. “Isn’t he just going to Apparate here with Dad? I don’t want to get covered in chicken feathers.” Her face was quite peaked.

“No, they aren’t Apparating … they’re driving. Seems Mr. Fury is quite fond of automobiles. He and your father should have loads to talk about.” Ginny noticed her mother shake her head as she mentioned automobiles. “At any rate, they’ll be arriving soon and I don’t want Mr. Fury being bombarded by a flock of chickens when he comes up the drive … go shoo them away, please!”

“C’mon, Ginny,” said Harry. “I’ll go with you.”

Ginny was grateful to have Harry help her with the chickens – she’d been most uncomfortable around them ever since she came back from Hogwarts after her first year. She was sure their big, red rooster gave her looks of loathing every time he saw her. She didn’t think she’d ever get over the guilt she felt about the things she’d done back then.

“Go on, now,” said Harry, swatting the last of the hens into the coop in the back of the house. He turned to Ginny. “You okay?” he asked. Her face was still pale and she was staring as the rooster scratched at the red roof of the hens’ enclosure.

“Yeah,” said Ginny. “Just brings back some bad stuff, seeing them.”

Harry didn’t say a word. He tugged Ginny in close and squeezed her into a tender hug.

The sound of tires crunching over gravel and dirt caused Ginny to look up.

“The Ministry car,” she said. “I think we’d better go in.”

***

Author's Note: Obviously, the Shakespeare play I'm referring to is Romeo & Juliet. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> Also, there's always been some debate on whether Juliet was actually complimenting Romeo by saying he kissed "by the book." Thanks, Tamara <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

***

Chapter Eleven – Sebastian Fury

Ginny and Harry rounded the corner to the front of the house just in time to see Mr. Weasley and Percy ushering a tall wizard in black robes in through the door. An Auror they had never seen before stopped just outside the threshold to stand nearby the other. Ginny, all of a sudden quite nervous, followed as Harry went inside first.

“There you two are,” chirped Molly Weasley in an unnatural tone of voice. “Come meet our guest!”

Ginny and Harry were directed over to the tall wizard, who held out a hand to greet them. He shook Harry’s hand vigorously and told him what a privilege it was to meet him – Ginny noticed his face turn slightly pink. Then the man shook Ginny’s hand and told her how charmed his was to meet such a lovely young lady – Ginny felt her own face go pink.

Sebastian Fury was a young wizard – indeed he had gone to school with Charlie, but his features was so sharp and youthful, that he didn’t look a day over eighteen. He wore robes of black, but they weren’t boring like the work robes students wore to Hogwarts. His were cut very smartly and made him look like he could be in a Madam Malkin’s print ad – the type Ginny had seen in Witch Weekly. She saw her own mother go pink over his compliments as they were being seated for dinner.

“Why, Mrs. Weasley,” Sebastian Fury said. “You look just as radiant as you did back in my Hogwarts days – I can see where your daughter gets it from.”

Molly beamed and Arthur said, “That’s Fury – always turning on the charm.”

Ron was mumbling under his breath. Ginny only caught the word “smarmy.” She stifled a giggle.

“You were at Hogwarts with Charlie,” Ginny said, taking a dish of sprouts from Hermione as she passed it along. “Which House were you in?”

“Ravenclaw,” said Fury. “I played Keeper on our House team. Amazing Quidditch player, your brother was – we didn’t have a prayer so long as Charlie Weasley played for Gryffindor – best ruddy Seeker I’d ever encountered – then or since. Arthur tells me you’re quite a player yourself, Harry – is that so?”

Harry quite obviously didn’t know what to say. He shifted awkwardly in his seat. “He is,” said Ron proudly. “Best Seeker that Gryffindor’s seen since Charlie.” He clapped Harry’s shoulder and Harry started going pink again.

“Did you play Quidditch after you left school?” inquired Ron. “You said Charlie was the best Seeker you’d seen then or since – who’d you play for?”

“Oh, I didn’t have the drive to go professional,” said Fury as he buttered a slice of bread. “I just play for amusement with some of the younger blokes at the office.” He turned suddenly to Percy. “Percy, you ought to join us sometime – we’re always looking for a few extra men.”

Ginny saw as Percy began to look uncomfortable. She tried not to laugh as he made a lame excuse why he couldn’t join the office Quidditch team – she knew very well that Percy didn’t mix business with pleasure and to join the team would have been no less than a cardinal sin to him.

“Where are Fred and George?” asked Ginny, filling her cup with pumpkin juice.

“Staying over at the Leaky Cauldron,” said Arthur. “They claim Lee Jordan’s heard about a storefront that’s become available in Diagon Alley – they may be able to get their joke shop rolling sooner than they thought. They’re speaking with a witch about signing a lease in the morning.”

“Your boys are still interested in becoming proprietors, then?” asked Fury.

“I had hoped they’d have followed their father’s footsteps like Percy did,” said Molly mournfully.

“Now, Molly,” said Arthur. “Fred and George are very serious – for once – in their goal to open the joke shop.”

Ginny chewed a mouthful of sprouts and wished someone would change the subject quickly. She didn’t really want to see a family feud in front of guests. And she’d seen that particular quarrel so often she knew the words by heart.

Hermione instantly granted her wish. “So, Mr. Fury … you work for the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad – which division?”

“I started out as an Obliviator, but for about a year now, my duties have been somewhat – how should I say this – different.”

Arthur nodded at Fury’s words.

“What do you mean by different?” asked Hermione, quite intrigued.

“Well,” began Fury. “A lot of what we do in that department of late doesn’t call for reversing mishaps that have been caused inadvertently, right Arthur?” Mr. Weasley nodded again. “A lot of what we’ve been doing of late has been due in part to the sudden resurgence of Dark wizardry. We have to pick up the slack of other departments. We don’t just get called to de-splinch people anymore. I think those days are over.”

He sighed.

Ginny noticed suddenly that the sharp, youthful features were somewhat diminished as he mentioned the reappearance of Darkness in the wizarding world.

He looked over to Harry and Ginny after a fashion. “I have somewhat of a hidden agenda here this evening. It wasn’t Mrs. Weasley’s superb cooking alone that called me to want an invite to dinner tonight.” He paused again and smiled at Molly warmly, who was beaming from the compliment to her cuisine. “I came here hoping to ask you two a few questions about some events from last year – some events involving Dementors.”

Ginny went cold from the mention of the word. Harry took her hand and held it tight under the tablecloth.

“I know you answered questions already about the two incidents – the one at Hogsmeade and the one at Hogwarts – but some recent happenings over the summer lead me to think the perpetrator of those offenses were the same ones involved in these more recent acts.”

Molly started to object, but Ginny interrupted her. “If Harry doesn’t mind answering a few questions, I don’t. I, for one, would like to see whoever’s responsible stopped.”

“Thank you,” said Fury. “I truly hope whatever you can share will help.”

After dinner, Sebastian Fury stayed to question Ginny and Harry. Much to Ginny’s surprise and relief, the questioning wasn’t too difficult. He kept the inquiries to a minimum and didn’t pry for details where they weren’t necessary. The only disappointment was that he wouldn’t share whom he suspected as the guilty party. Ginny restrained herself from telling him it’d be quicker to go straight to Malfoy Manor with a warrant and a couple of burly security trolls, but she knew all too well that things weren’t that simple.

That night, Ginny went to sleep straight away, unaware that her peaceful slumber wouldn’t last long.

*****

Chapter Twelve – Summer Nights

Furtive whispers woke Ginny up around midnight. She lay in her bed, still and silent, pretending to be asleep, but listening intently to the hushed voices.

“No, Ron!” hissed Hermione, clearly objecting to whatever he had just proposed to her. “And be quiet – you’ll wake Ginny.”

“She’s sound asleep,” whispered Ron. “Now, let’s go. We can sneak out …”

“NO WE CAN”T!” protested Hermione vehemently in a harsh whisper.

“We’ve done our fair share of sneaking – I think we can,” said Ron with a note of pride in his voice.

“But, the Auror …” Hermione began to point out.

“… is trained to catch Dark wizards, not teenagers,” countered Ron. “C’mon, Hermione. He won’t be expecting us to be lurking around at night – it’s the perfect opportunity.”

Hermione let out a sigh of defeat. “Oh, all right – it was nice knowing you if your Mum finds out.”

“Hush and she won’t find out,” said Ron.

“Me, hush?” said Hermione, but she paused.

Ginny heard sounds that made her suddenly wish she really were sound asleep.

She contemplated for a moment whether or not she should stop them from sneaking out – she also felt a pang of envy, wishing it were she and Harry stealing off into the night instead.

Harry.

The thought suddenly struck her. Did Harry know Ron and Hermione were sneaking out? If so, did he know where they were headed? What if something went wrong? What if Ron and Hermione needed help for some reason?

At this point it was too late for Ginny to stop them, but it wasn’t too late to find out what Harry knew and what – if anything – he wanted to do about it.

She grabbed her wand and crept up to Ron’s bedroom with the stealth of a cat, careful to avoid the creaky floorboards along the way.

“Alohomora!” she whispered as she reached the door to the room. She didn’t dare knock, for fear the sound would wake someone. She quickly shut the door without a sound and peered into the darkness. She could make out a figure lying on a cot – Harry. He lay almost motionless, save the rising and falling of his chest as he breathed in and out.

The frog in Ron’s fish tank gave a lazy “ribbit” and Ginny jumped as the gray bit of fluff in the small birdcage gave a shrill “hoot.”

“Quiet, Pigwidgeon!” fussed Ginny in an anxious whisper.

She moved cautiously over to Harry’s cot and looked at him pensively for a moment. She wondered if she ought to wake him. He was sleeping on his back, his mouth opened slightly – his left arm rested across his stomach and his right arm was raised, his hand laying across his forehead, as if he’d gone to sleep with a headache.

Ginny’s breath caught in her throat for an instant when she saw the hand covering the well-known scar, but she soon realized that if the scar had hurt him, he wouldn’t be laying there, looking so tranquil. Still, the simple thought of what caused that scar to burn …

A shiver ran through Ginny’s whole body at her last thought. She breathed in deeply and knelt down beside the cot, knowing that she needed to wake him. She traced the fingers of his right hand softly, hoping that the sensation might rouse him gradually – she didn’t want to alarm him – but he didn’t stir. She touched his face gently and whispered,

“Harry … wake up … Harry?”

Nothing. Ginny sighed. Ron and Hermione could be anywhere by now. She felt sure they slipped past the Auror. There was a dead calm outside that night – not even a breeze moved the gnarled limbs of the trees in the yard. Surely she would have heard something had they been discovered.

Drastic times call for drastic measures, thought Ginny. Here goes …

She took her hand and jabbed him in the ribs.

Harry sat bolt upright and gasped. He clutched his side where Ginny had poked him and mumbled incoherently. The next instant he had spun to the side, fumbling around for his glasses. He spun back around, glasses askew and wand in hand.

“What … who … what?” He pointed the wand towards Ginny.

“Shhhh,” said Ginny. She clamped a hand over his mouth and lowered his wand with the other. “You’ll wake the whole house!”

Harry muttered something that sounded like “Ginny” from beneath the constraint of her hand.

“Yes,” answered Ginny. “Are you going to keep quiet?”

Harry nodded and Ginny lowered her hand.

“What’s going on? What’s happened? Are you okay?”

“One thing at a time,” Ginny whispered, straightening his glasses. For a moment, she was willing to forget all about Ron and Hermione. She shifted from the floor to sit on the side of his cot, where she just had to take a moment to admire how adorable he looked in his rumpled Quidditch t-shirt, with his hair the messiest she’d every seen it – and that was saying something. But he wasn’t taking time to forget that she had awakened him in the middle of the night – and he still appeared fairly alarmed that trouble was afoot.

“Are you okay?” he repeated.

“I’m fine,” she assured him. She saw him breath a sigh of relief. Then he noticed Ron’s empty bed.

“Where’s Ron?”

“That’s why I’m here,” said Ginny.

“What’s happened to Ron? Is Hermione still asleep?”

“Hermione’s with Ron.”

“Where are they? Ginny, what’s going on?”

“I don’t think they’re in trouble, Harry – not yet anyhow …”

“What do you mean by not yet?” asked Harry. Even in the darkness Ginny could see him wrinkling his brow.

“They snuck out,” said Ginny. Suddenly thinking the situation seemed a touch absurd.

“What were they thinking?” said Harry, almost chuckling. “I’ll bet you a ten Galleons it was all Ron’s idea.”

“I don’t think they were thinking,” said Ginny. “If Mum finds out …”

“Ron’s definitely a bad influence on Hermione,” said Harry, trying very hard now not to laugh.

“This won’t be so funny if something bad happens to them while they’re cavorting out in the woods,” said Ginny seriously.

“Hermione might keep a level enough head to keep them out of too much trouble …” began Harry.

Ginny continued to look worried.

“But, if it makes you feel better, I can go out and drag their cavorting carcasses back in here.”

Ginny watched as he tried unsuccessfully to stop himself from grinning.

“Just let me get dressed and I’ll get my Invisibility Cloak, …” he said.

“I’m coming with you,” interrupted Ginny. She crossed her arms and put on a resolved look that challenged Harry to disagree with her.

“Okay,” he said, getting up from the cot. “But before we go, maybe you should put on something a little more … outdoorsy.”

For the first time, Ginny realized she’d been in nothing but her nightgown the whole time. From the look on Harry’s face, however, he clearly did not object. Ginny was all of a sudden very thankful for the darkness, for it veiled the shade of scarlet she had just turned.

“Meet me on the landing in front of my room in five minutes,” Ginny said.

*****

Within minutes, Ginny had pulled on a sweatshirt and jeans and was ready to go. She opened her bedroom door silently and whispered into the hallway,

“Harry … are you there?”

“I’m here,” replied Harry’s voice. He peeked his head out from under his cloak and motioned for her to join him underneath.

Ginny slipped under the fluid fabric and, for the second time that night, forgot about the task at hand. Harry had allowed her to walk in front of him and had placed his hands around her waist to guide her down the meandering staircase. The touch of his fingertips around her middle caused her skin to go tingly.

They went slowly downward – Ginny, who knew the staircase like the back of her hand, led Harry carefully, avoiding the many floorboards that moaned and creaked when stepped upon. Once downstairs, Ginny motioned for them to sneak out of a low, large window in the back of the house. The window had been left open, no doubt by Ron as means of escape. They crept out and headed towards the footpath they’d traveled the afternoon before.

Once safely out of audible range of the house, Ginny spoke softly.

“I’ll wager they’re down at the pond – another ten Galleons?”

Harry chortled. “That’s not much of a gamble.”

As the came to the other side of the wood, where the little pond met the footpath, Ginny was proven right.

“Okay,” said Harry, backing up so they were still in the shelter of the woodland – he’d slipped the cloak off once the path met the cover of the gnarled trees. “I think they look pretty safe and it’s my professional opinion that they don’t want to be interrupted.”

“Professional opinion?” said Ginny. “What makes you a professional on the subject of midnight trysts?”

“I’m out here with you, aren’t I?” he asked smoothly. “And I don’t really want to be interrupted at the moment, either.”

All common sense left Ginny at that very moment. Let Mum find us, she thought. It’ll be worth it. Harry’s arms had found their way around her again and he tugged her close. Ginny’s skin began to tingle once more. Harry was surely trying to make being awakened in the middle of the night worth his while – his mouth had trailed from hers, to the nape of her neck and back to her own mouth again. She suddenly realized that she had sought the support of a tree so she wouldn’t fall down – she felt his hands discovering places they’d never had before …

And then, a brilliant and frightening flash of light blazed so brightly that not the tree, nor Harry, could hold her up any longer. Harry choked at the sight and Ginny thought she heard shouts of panic from the side of the pond. A dim, green haze hung in the air from the direction of the Burrow. It all happened so quickly, but it was a memory that would forever be emblazoned in Ginny’s memory – as long as she lived.

She thought she heard Harry’s voice call to Ron and Hermione as she felt Harry tug up and lead her as fast as her feet could carry her, back up to the house.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub129.ezboard.com/bmajiklmoonsr ... boo1974 at: 1/20/03 6:35:52 pm

Chapter Thirteen – Morsmordre

As they ran up the footpath, Ginny heard a shout and saw in the sky, above her house, something she hadn’t seen since the Quidditch World Cup the summer before her third year. A gruesome sight that made Ginny want to be ill …

“The Dark Mark,” gasped Hermione. She and Ron had caught up with Harry and Ginny.

They came to a clearing and stopped just short of the Weasley’s garden.

“Oh!” gasped Ginny, clutching her hands to her mouth. She felt her stomach drop. The Auror who had been on night watch lay dead across the stone steps that lead to the Burrow.

“Mum … Dad … Percy,” she cried, starting to run to the house.

“Wait,” hissed Harry, grabbing her arm to pull her back. “It might not be safe …”

But Ron wasn’t waiting. He had run past Harry and Ginny, leapt over the lifeless body of the Auror and scrambled through the door.

It was then that Ginny heard the wailing. Her mother’s mournful voice practically echoed through the entire countryside. Percy clambered outside. Ginny could barely find her voice.

“No, Percy,” she whimpered. “No … please, no … not …”

Percy trudged through the garden and grabbed Ginny, squeezing her so tightly that she thought her ribs might crunch.

“Not Dad,” she sobbed. “Please, Percy … please, tell me Dad is all right.”

Percy didn’t say a word. Ginny felt him shaking. Usually, in times of trouble, Percy was in his element – he dealt well with taking charge of a difficult situation – and Ginny was scared out of her wits to imagine what he had seen in the house to unnerve him so. She wanted him to reassure her, to tell her that their father was just inside – that he was fine. That everything was going to be okay. But the dead man lying on her doorstep was a clear indicator that she was deluding herself. She had to see for herself.

She shook her brother loose and headed for the door – she thought she heard the voices of Harry, Hermione and even Percy calling for her to come back, but she ignored them all.

She had to see for herself.

She moved quickly. She could hear footsteps behind her, following her own. But she was faster than they were. She wasn’t going to let them stop her.

“Dad!” she called.

He didn’t answer. But she heard her mother. Her sobs made it seem as though the whole house was weeping. And she heard Ron.

“Ginny – don’t come up here,” he said, he voice breaking. “Stay downstairs.”

She nearly flew up the stairs. She came to a halt on the landing in front of her parents’ bedroom. Ron knelt beside their mother. Molly Weasley was crumpled on the floor beside her son. Her face, usually bright and kindly, was pale as parchment and drenched in tears. She quivered and sobbed. Ron’s eyes were fixed to a spot in the room – he didn’t turn to her, but he said, very quietly,

“Go back downstairs, Ginny.”

“I’ll take her down,” said Harry in a calm voice. He, Hermione and Percy had caught up to Ginny on the landing. He took Ginny by the hand, but she pulled it away from him.

“No!” Ginny shouted. “Where’s Dad, Ron – I need to see him …”

Molly wailed louder. She rocked back and forth and covered her face with her trembling hands.

“Mum,” whispered Ginny. She wanted to try to trick herself into believing that her father wasn’t in there … that he wasn’t …

She couldn’t even think the word. Her Mum was upset about something, but it wasn’t because of her Dad … it couldn't be ...

Ginny took two steps towards Ron and she saw inside the room … and she felt her insides lurch. She was going to be sick. She felt the landing start to spin – or was that her head?

The body of Arthur Weasley lay as still as could be on the floor of the bedroom. Ginny knew immediately that her father was dead.

She sank to her knees and felt someone grip her shoulders. She felt her body start to heave.

“Get her out of here … now, Harry!” Ron’s voice was adamant.

Harry pulled back on her shoulders, but Ginny’s limbs were limp. She couldn’t remove herself from the gruesome scene. If she waited long enough, maybe her father would get up. Maybe he was just asleep.

But his eyes were wide open. Ginny felt very cold as she realized what the last thing was that Arthur Weasley had probably seen. Had he awakened from his sleep to discover his attacker? Had he tried to protect his wife? He didn’t even have a wand. Ginny scanned the floor. No ... no wand.

Cowardice, thought Ginny. Attacking an unarmed man.

She felt her shoulders tugging again. Percy began to help Harry move her wilted body.

“Stay with Mum,” Percy commanded Ron. He seemed to have gotten his bravado back. “C’mon, Hermione – come down with us,” he added.

Hermione was reluctant, but she followed.

“What do we do?” breathed Hermione, going after them down the stairs.

Harry and Percy laid Ginny onto the settee.

“We implement Dad’s plan of action in case of a crisis, that’s what we do,” said Percy gravely.

“Are you going to contact the Ministry?” asked Hermione nervously.

“That’s not safe,” said Percy. “We contact someone from the Order.” He turned to Harry and whispered. “Stay with them – I’ll be right back.”

Harry nodded. Within minutes, Percy had returned, clutching a parchment envelope in his hand.

“Dad put this together at the start of summer – he took me aside and told me that, in these uncertain times we live in, we should have a strategy, just in case things got out of hand close to home.”

He paused and took a shaky breath.

“I never thought,” he continued, “that it’d come down to this. I never though I’d be the one …”

Ginny sat up. Percy’s hands were shaking violently. He drew in another breath – a deeper one this time – and went on.

“I’m going to contact Dumbledore. Then I’ll take Mum somewhere safe. Harry – you and Ron need to meet your godfather – there are instructions in the envelope. Take the girls with you. Take only what you can carry – you’ll have to go out on foot. And be quick.”

What was Percy saying? Ginny’s head throbbed – a deep, dull bass was pounding against her skull. It was going to erupt right through her ears … her eyes … she was going to be sick again.

“We can’t leave, Percy – this is our home,” she heard her voice say to her brother.

“Ginny,” Percy said. He knelt beside the settee and took her face in his hands. “It’s not safe here. You’ll be all right … Ron and Harry will make sure you’re all right.”

Ginny looked up for reassurance from Harry, but he was speeding up the staircase at a furious pace.

“Harry,” breathed Ginny, reaching out towards the stairs.

“He’s getting some things together – then you’ll all leave. Very quickly.” Percy was lugging her to her feet. “Pull yourself together,” he said calmly. “You’re strong – you’ll be all right.”

The stairs creaked and Ginny turned – Ron was leading Molly down. She was a wreck. Never in her entire life had Ginny seen her mother so distraught. She ran to Molly’s side and wrapped her arms tightly around her mother’s neck.

“Mummy!” Ginny bawled, burying her face in her mother’s plump shoulder. Molly said nothing.

Harry sprinted down the steps next, carrying two packs.

“Grab some food from the kitchen before you go – but go! Quickly!” urged Percy, supporting his mother as Ginny and Ron released her.

“Everyone have their wands?” asked Ron.

Ginny felt her pocket. Sure enough, she had hers – she suddenly remembered putting it in that pocket earlier. It seemed as if she had done so days – even weeks – ago.

“There’s Muggle money in that envelope, Harry,” said Percy quietly, as they headed out the door. “Don’t stop in the village – go a bit further and then find an inn. Get some rest. There’s also a map that will show you where to rendezvous with Black – after you’ve had a break, that is. He’ll tell you what to do from there.”

Harry nodded. He led them out through the front door.

As they trod away from the Burrow, Ginny turned for one last look. There was her home – tinged in a sickly green light as the morbid constellation of skull and serpent hung like a beacon of death above it.

***

Author's Note: The chapter title is J.K.R. - it's the incantation for the Dark Mark.

Now I have to go off somewhere and cry. That was hard stuff to write. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

Chapter Fourteen – Flight Into Shadows

Harry led the group into the forest as their departure from the Burrow began. Not one of them dared to speak for a while, and then at last, when Hermione finally broke the silence, it was to suggest use of a Four-Point Spell to ensure their course was on track. Ginny was shaken from the daze she had been in ever since she’d caught her last glimpse of her house.

“We’ll stay to the east,” muttered Harry, after the spell was complete. “We can stay on the outskirts of Ottery St. Catchpole – remember, Percy warned us against stopping in the village. This way, we won’t even have to travel through it – we can bypass it all together and avoid being seen.”

Suddenly, after trudging on a while longer, and as the forest become denser, Hermione groaned and stopped.

“Oww – my ankle,” she gasped.

“Lumos!” shouted Ron. “What’s happened? Are you all right?”

“I just twisted it on that knobby tree root,” said Hermione, gesturing to a great, twisted root jutting out near the base of an ancient-looking tree. “It’s not sprained – but these woods are getting thicker by the minute. It’s almost impossible to avoid tripping over something – should we risk wand light?”

“No,” said Ron. “Nox.” He quickly extinguished the light from his wand. “Someone might see – walk closer to me.”

Ginny heard Ron tugging Hermione in close to him. Then she felt a hand grab one of hers.

“Stick close to me, Ginny,” said Harry quietly. “We’ll be out of here soon.”

The darkness of the forest was dreadfully enveloping. The all-encompassing shadows were closing in around her with every step she took. The only thing that kept Ginny from slipping completely away into the gloom was the warm hand clinging to hers, guiding her through the darkest night of her life.

Don’t let go, she thought. She needed that hand to guide her in more ways than one.

Harry was right. It didn’t take long for them to navigate the rest of the woods. And Ginny was relieved to leave the pitch-black behind – now they traveled through a field, thick with long grass and tangly weeds, but minus the dense canopy of the forest. Ginny felt like she might be able to catch her breath, if only …

She tried not to think about it, but the image burned on her memory like a brand – the horrific sight was imprinted, indelibly in her mind. She’d have given anything – anything – at that moment to erase it – to rub out the picture of her father - cold, lifeless, dead. She had thousands upon thousands of wonderful memories of her dad. She wished desperately she could conjure up one of those …

“Watch it,” said Ron under his breath as a lone Muggle car sped down the road bordering the field.

Ron ducked low, using the growth in the pasture for cover. He pulled Hermione down with him. Harry mimicked his action and pulled Ginny down as well.

“We’re exposed out here,” said Harry. “We need to be careful.”

“The village isn’t far off, then we can make for Quail Parish – it’s a town even smaller than Ottery St. Catchpole, but I think they have an inn.”

They skirted around the village and as Harry performed another Four-Point Spell to locate Quail Parish, Ginny noticed the sky had begun to lighten.

Dawn.

First light would be streaming across the countryside soon. Ginny’s chest began to ache. They’d made it to see a new day dawning, but her father hadn’t.

Flash.

The unforgettable image burned again, as terrible as the first time she’d seen it. Her feet began to feel like lead. Pretty soon, she was sure Harry would have to drag her along.

Harry noticed her pace slowing. He stopped for a moment and looked at her.

“I know you’re tired,” he whispered. “We’re almost there, and then you can rest.”

Ginny wanted to sleep, yet feared it … she was so tired, so exhausted. She’d never been tired like this, not even after the Dementor attack. But she was afraid of what sleep would bring. The dreams – nightmares, rather – would be too much to bear, on top of everything else. She suddenly wished she had some of Madam Pomfrey’s dreamless sleep remedy.

Almost there, she thought. Almost there.

Almost where? Not home. She missed home desperately.

Ginny mustered all of her strength to slog along after Harry. Ron and Hermione had been keeping a quicker pace. It was almost as if Ron was desperate to get them to safety. He turned to look back at her every so often and Ginny could see the loss in his eyes. And she could see the desperation there as well – he wasn’t losing anyone else, if he could help it.

As she plodded along, she abruptly looked up at the glowing sunrise – not to admire the morning light, but because a familiar hooting called her to do so.

“Hedwig!” Harry gasped, as the snowy owl fluttered smoothly down to perch on his outstretched arm.

“She’s got something,” said Hermione. “Quick, Harry – open it up!”

Harry unfastened two items from the owl’s extended leg – one was a letter and the other, a copy of the Daily Prophet.

He handed the newspaper to Ginny and unfolded the letter.

“It’s from Sirius,” he said calmly. “I wrote to him yesterday evening,” he added vaguely.

“Go on – read it,” urged Ron.

Harry cleared his throat and read,

Percy contacted me. I am devastated about Arthur.

Harry paused.

Ron scowled. “Go on.”

Harry continued.

Please offer Ron and Ginny my condolences, for all they're worth. I, for one, won’t rest until his attackers are found – this nightmare must end soon, before any more damage is done to the decent wizarding folk in this world.

I won’t owl you again, for fear someone will start to track Hedwig. You must stay as inconspicuous as possible. Reply back, so I know you’re all okay - I will keep her safe. We will meet soon and I will give you some instructions on how to keep out of harm’s way. Percy told me he gave you Arthur’s packet.

Stay safe.

Sirius

Harry paused again.

“Whatever it is, keep going,” said Ron blandly.

P.S. I’m including today’s issue of the Daily Prophet – hot off the press. You may not want to it share with Ron or Ginny right away, but it has some interesting information in it – could be clues to exactly who we should look for first.

“Whatever’s in the paper, I’m reading it, Harry,” said Ron, eyeing the newspaper. “I don’t need anything sugar-coated.”

Ginny saw Harry’s eyes look at her questioningly.

“Neither do I,” said Ginny.

***

Author’s Note: I’m taking huge liberties with when the Daily Prophet is printed and delivered. Conceivably, the latest issue probably wouldn’t be able to get to Sirius, then to Harry via Hedwig at the crack of dawn, but hey – it’s magic, so maybe it’s plausible. Chapter Fifteen – Front Page News

Harry unrolled the issue of the Daily Prophet that Sirius had sent and scanned the front page. Ginny detected a definite look of apprehension on his face.

“We shouldn’t stay here any longer, not even to read this,” Harry said unexpectedly and started to roll the paper back up again.

Ron looked at him hesitantly, but couldn’t disagree. They had stayed stationary far too long.

“We’ll read it once we get settled,” said Ron, leading them on.

“Let me reply to Sirius and then we’ll move along,” said Harry, groping through his knapsack for a quill.

*****

The morning had fully dawned and the tops of small houses came into view as they rounded a bend. They’d taken to a narrow, dirt road once they’d read a sign that said, “Quail Parish – 1 Kilometer” a ways back and now there it was, just down the knoll. Ron was right when he’d said it was small. Ginny had never been to Quail Parish before. She took back everything she’d ever said about Ottery St. Catchpole being the most quaint and rustic village in all of Britain. Quail Parish had it beat, hands down. As they walked slowly into the rural township, Ginny wondered if there were any witches or wizards that lived there.

“There,” Hermione pointed quickly, as they walked nervously down the High Street. “An inn – The Quail’s Nest.”

The inn was just as old-fashioned as everything else in the tiny village. It matched the other thatched cottages that lined the road, but it had a medieval-looking sign with a gilded quail etched on it.

“Let me handle getting the room, okay?” said Hermione. “We already look suspicious enough – like a bunch of escapees from a juvenile detention center or something. I don’t want anyone trying to ask too many questions.” She turned to Harry. “Do you have the Muggle money?”

“Yeah,” said Harry. “It’s in my knapsack – here.” He handed her the bag.

The four of them entered the inn. A wizened old woman sat behind a high counter, perched on a stool, and grinned at them with a wide, nearly toothless smile.

“Welcome, dearies,” she croaked. Her voice was high and raspy.

“Erm – are there any vacancies?” asked Hermione, stepping up to the counter.

The old woman squinted at her through tiny spectacles, then peered over at Harry, Ron and Ginny.

“You lot look mighty young – where are your parents?” she asked suspiciously.

“Oh – we’re on holiday – from university,” began Hermione slowly. Ginny could see her working out a lie in her head. “Every summer we like to hike across the countryside – breath in a bit of fresh air, take in nature – that sort of thing.”

The old woman raised an eyebrow.

“The thing is – last night – our tent just collapsed. It was a piece of rubbish anyhow – we can’t really afford anything fancy – we're just a bunch of unemployed eighteen year olds, you know …” She feigned a hearty laugh. The old woman was nodding.

She’s actually buying this, thought Ginny in disbelief. But she was glad. She was so fatigued – she thought she might collapse in a heap, right there in the reception area of the inn, on this old woman’s countertop.

Hermione wasn’t finished. “Well, as you might have figured out – were completely done in. We didn’t get a wink of sleep last night, once the tent buckled. Please tell me you have a couple rooms …”

“I think we can accommodate you,” said the old woman, pushing up her glasses and looking over the inn’s registry. “I can fix you up in two cozy little rooms, but let me warn you …” She gave Harry and Ron a firm look. “I don’t want any funny business going on under my roof, you hear?”

Hermione tried to reassure the old lady that all they wanted to do was sleep, but the innkeeper kept a cautious eye on both Harry and Ron the whole time Hermione was paying her for the rooms and collecting the room keys - no doubt sizing them up to determine whether or not they looked the type to take advantage of the two young women in their company.

Ginny wished the woman wouldn’t look so intently at them – not because she cared if she thought they were nothing more than a couple of hoodlums, but because she was afraid that she’d be able to identify them. It would be hard to remain inconspicuous if everyone they encountered stared them down like this innkeeper was doing.

Hermione thanked the old woman and they hiked up the stairs of the cottage to two neighboring bedrooms.

“We’ll take number one,” said Hermione, signaling to Ginny. “And you two take number two.” She handed Ron the key to the boys’ room. “Get settled – clean up – rest up …”

“I want a look at that paper first,” said Ron, reminding Harry about the Daily Prophet article.

“All right,” said Harry. “We’ll have a look at the rooms, then we’ll take a look at the paper.”

***

The rooms were tiny – Ginny gazed around the girls’ and saw a lumpy bed covered with a handmade duvet of a frayed blue material. A small mahogany chest of drawers sat against the wall in front of the bed. The only other piece of furniture in the room was a rickety old chair, padded with a flat blue seat cushion that looked like it had been sat upon one too many times.

A door beside the chest of drawers led to a narrow bath and toilet area that ultimately connected to the boys’ room.

Hermione and Ginny walked through to meet the boys in their room, which was almost an exact replica of the girls’, except the duvet and seat cushion in their's was an olive green instead of blue.

Ron had already unrolled the Daily Prophet and had apparently read it. His face had turned a shade to match the duvet.

“Here,” Ron muttered, handing the paper to Ginny. Hermione glanced over her shoulder as she began to read the article.

Ministry Official Found Dead

Arthur Weasley was found dead in his home in the early hours of the day today. Weasley was head of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office at the Ministry of Magic and was best known as the writer of the Muggle Protection Act, a piece of legislation that has caused much debate among members of the magical community.

Sources corroborate that Weasley died under suspicious circumstances, but no further details have been made known to the press. It is suspected, but not confirmed, that an Auror stationed at the Weasley home has died as well, furthering the belief that foul play was involved.

Weasley is survived by his wife and seven children. Bill Weasley (see press photo below), the victim’s eldest son and curse breaker for Gringotts, declined an interview. No other family members could be contacted for discussion on the incident.

Ginny glanced down to the press photo and saw her brother Bill being held back by three Gringotts goblins, without a doubt because he’d already had enough of the press after receiving news of his father’s death and was ready to show the reporter, not tell him so. Personally, she hoped Bill had gotten in a few good punches after the camera snapped the picture. Heartless bastards, going for an interview that soon afterwards – oh, damn! Ginny thought. I hope Bill didn’t find out about Dad through that reporter … Ginny felt her stomach sink and her skin start to feel clammy.

“Great heartfelt article, that was,” mumbled Ron, taking the paper from Ginny and scowling at it. “And what’s this crap about “suspicious circumstances” and believed “foul play” anyhow? Who are they trying to fool? I’d like to thrash that reporter within an inch of his life, then take that inch!” he shouted.

Hermione looked at him with a distressed face. “Calm down, Ron,” she said soothingly. “I think we all need to rest now.”

Ron collapsed on the bed and held his hands firmly at his temples. He looked exactly how Ginny felt at that moment. Hermione sat beside him and wrapped an arm across his shoulders.

“Rest,” she whispered to him.

***

Author's Note: I got Ron's thrashing line from a S1 ep of Angel. Wes said it.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub129.ezboard.com/bmajiklmoonsr ... boo1974 at: 1/24/03 6:19:19 pm
