Part 64 6/27/05
Looks like the board ate several updates, so here I go reposting them. Enjoy!

Part 64

“What’s that you’re looking at?”
Startled, Liz dropped the book and turned to find Maria standing there watching her. She watched as Liz picked up the book and held it out to her.
“The History of Antar,” Liz said with a shrug.
“Anything interesting?”
“Lots of pictures, I can’t read most of the writing. How was the city?”
“It’s beautiful out there Liz. I feel like I am in the medieval times. I mean they’re suppose to be superior to us, but you don’t get that sense from being around the square and the market,”
“I guess that is what makes them superior. They have not fought against the technology, but just let it move along like them,”
“I’m sure you’re right. Where’s Nerathe?”
“Resting,”
“Did you kick his ass or what?”
They both shared a laugh.
“I doubt if I could. I think he was holding back on me,”
“If he’s anything like Michael…he didn’t want to have his ego hurt by getting whipped by a girl,”
“How was your visit last night?”
“It was great Liz…I can’t believe you have this wonderful ability to do something like that…how does it feel?”
“It’s weird, because when I do something new, my body kind of just shrugs it off. Almost as of to tell, me ‘duh, I knew you could do that’,”
“It’s crazy, huh?”
“It is…I just hope we will be able to use all of it to save the others,”
Maria nodded and Liz walked to a large window in the room, it faced north and she could see the castle, the center spire poking up into the day sky, a small flag waving in the wind.
“Did you get near the castle?”
“Elder said it was best if we did not,”
“It is wise to listen to him,” Nerathe said suddenly from the door way.
“How are you feeling?” Liz asked him, carefully trying to look within for an answer.
“I am fine,” he said and looked at Maria.
“Heavy reading for someone that does not know the language,” he said to her.
“I like the pictures,” she said with a grin. “Oh wow, this must Michael…or is it you?” she said excitedly, showing him the picture.
“That is Rath, or Michael as he is called now,”
“What happen to his family?” Liz said suddenly.
“His family was killed,” Nerathe says solemnly.
“By who?” Maria asked, shaking her head and staring at the picture of Michael.
“A coup attempt. Khivar’s father had at one time sought to rule Antar, as well,” Nerathe said.
“Like father, like son,”
“Why this planet?” Liz continues.
“They say the air in Antar is better than anywhere in the solar system. Our planet has always prospered, has always had loyal citizens. The planet Khivar is from has always struggled,”
“So instead of trying to find ways to make their own planet better, they thought it would be easier to take another one over?” Maria asked incredulously.
“It would seem so,” Nerathe said.
“How did Khivar become a part of this royal army?”
“He came and asked, he and his family were the heads of the army on Kaspar. It had been many years since Kaspar had warred with Antar and the King thought it a good way to continue the peace,”
“And how did Ava picture into this all?” Liz asked, making a face.
“Kaspar began their grumblings and Khivar, pretended to be trying to make amends. There was a summit and Ava, being as close to a princess as one can get on their planet was brought for Zan. King Tristan thought if Zan married Ava, it would end their problems,”
“But it caused death instead,” Liz spat.
“You have been given a 2nd chance. It will be different this time,” Nerathe says, walking to Liz and putting a hand on her shoulder.
“And you have more of us that know and will help,” Maria piped in.
Liz shook her head and let go some of the anger.
“We will set things right for all of the people,” she said turning to look at both Nerathe and Maria.
“The will of the people shall be done,” Nerathe stated simply. “They have believed it and will fight for it,”
“Now we just have to come up with a plan so that can happen,” Maria says.
“And we only have a few days to get it in motion,”
“I have a few ideas,” Nerathe said. “Khivar has made a mockery of the deaths, he has said that it will be a public execution, so that all hope will be lost for once and for all. This would be the ideal time to strike.”
“What do you propose?”
Nerathe went to a large atlas and brought it to the table, opening it to a picture of the castle and schematics of its layout. He began pointing to different areas and both Maria and Liz listened, intently.

***************************************************************

Max scratched his neck and cursed the device that hung around for what seemed like the 100th time.
“Your Highness,” came a voice from the doorway. He turned to look and saw it was Juxane, Isabelle’s nanny. She bowed slightly and approached Max.
“You don’t have to do that,” Max said, sighing deeply, shoulders sagging.
“You are the King, whether you were born here or somewhere else,”
He nodded in understanding and she smiled.
“My husband is a scientist who helped create you…he is anxious to meet you,”
“It would be nice to have met him under other circumstances,”
Juxane stepped in front of Max and carefully began picking at a piece of her skin on her arm. When she was done she placed her arm where Max could take a good look. It was the symbol of the Royals.
“My husband and I both wear this mark, as do many others. We are hoping now that you have returned we will be able to bear this mark without fear.”
“I wish I could promise you and all the people that,”
“You need not promise it to us, we have known the day would come,”
She bowed to him and quickly left the room. Max looked after her and wondered what kind of place Antar was, that people would hold onto hope for so many years. He thought about how he would rule such a place, when his own hope was waning.

**********************************************************

“How will we know who will fight with us?” Liz asked, thinking over Nerathe’s idea.
“Yeah, we don’t want to give some war cry and find ourselves caught and killed as well,” Maria said.
“We will go into town tonight and get things ready. Many have lost family and friends to Khivar…you will be surprised at how many pledge their allegiance to Zan and his family, even after so many years.”
“I hope so. We can’t have this plan go bad,”
Nerathe nodded in agreement.
“We must be careful tonight. Khivar will have spies out among the people, looking for trouble,”
Is there anyone in the castle we can talk to?” Maria said. “Michael and the rest are being kept in confinement,”
“We will find out more this evening,” Nerathe said. “Let us go eat,”
“You too go. I am going to get some rest,”
“Liz, you should keep up your strength,” Maria quickly said.
Maria looked at Nerathe, willing him to say something to Liz. Nerathe shrugged and bowed slightly.
“As you wish Elise,”
He put an arm out for Maria and they left Liz standing where they had found her. Liz wandered back to the window and continued to stare at the castle. It seemed the day was finally beginning to turn to evening. She kept getting flashes of her former life, yet while it seemed familiar, it didn’t comfort her. If their plan did work, what was Max going to do? Would he stay and rule his planet? Would he be upset if she decided not to stay? What about Michael and Isabelle? And if they did stay, how could she be sure they were safe? All these thoughts flitted through her mind and she finally shook her head, trying to free herself from them.
“I see much weighs heavily on your mind,” Elder said from the doorway.
Liz turned and walked to him, trying to put a smile on her face.
“There is much to prepare for,”
“You are afraid?” he questioned.
Liz nodded.
“I would be lying if I told you I was not,”
“You would only be lying to yourself,” he continued. “You worry about your friends, but mostly your fear for King Zan,”
Liz looked at the Elder and wondered if he too read minds.
“I do. There will be a lot for him to fix once Khivar is disposed of,”
“You will not stay?”
Liz looked at the ground, gnawing at her lip and finally back at the Elder.
“I…don’t know,” she whispered.
He smiled and offered her his arm.
“It is ok. There will be time for you to decide.”
She took his arm and together they walked towards the dining room. She had forgotten about the nap she had wanted to take and instead joined in the others that were already eating.

See comment from above.

Part 65

Isabelle looked out into the city, as the afternoon turned into night. She could see people moving about in the city and she wondered if news of Max’s arrival had caused much of a stir. Khivar didn’t seem to be worrying too much about those that might be loyal to Max. He only laughed and said many of the loyalists had moved from the city, to the countryside. In addition, those that remained, when he found them, where killed. Isabelle could only shudder as she remembered his calculating look and the evil laugh. She shook the memory and walked back into the room. She wondered if Max would stay after it was all over. She knew he had a big heart and all the people would have to do is ask, and he would give all of himself to help them. She rubbed her stomach and thought about Alex. This brought a smile to her lips and she closed her eyes.
“What makes you smile so, Princess?”
She snapped her eyes open to find Nicholas standing there…only he was older. She had not seen him since their first night in the cells.
“What do you want?” she hissed wrapping her shawl tighter around her. He looked her up and down, and licked his lips ever so gently. The look in his eyes disgusted her and she fought the urge to reach out and strangle him.
“Khivar sent me to check on you, make sure you weren’t plotting his demise,”
She put her chin out and turned away from him, heading back out onto the balcony.
“You can tell Khivar not to send someone as unworthy as you to check on me,” she spat, turning and giving him one of her best glares.
“You do not fool me Lonnie,” he said with a quiet laugh.
She froze. Lonnie? Why would he call her that?
“I do not go by Lonnie,” she said, trying to take a deep breath.
“Maybe not now, but you did. It is sad that they were able to create you, yet with none of the memories,”
“What are you talking about?”
“Princess, you were so anxious to make a life separate from that of your brother, you began going by Lonnie. It was what made it so easy for Khivar to slip into your life, so easy for him to kill you all,” Nicholas said, smirking at the look of horror on Isabelle’s face. “And here we are again, I would be careful…because child or not, Khivar will kill you again,”
“Get out! Just get out!” Isabelle yelled, her eyes wild with anger. Nicholas laughed and quickly slipped from her room. She reached for a vase on a table and flung it at his retreated figure. It crashed and broke, spilling flowers and pieces of the pot along the wall. . But as the pieces fell to the ground, a glimmer caught Isabelle’s eyes. She rushed to the mess and looked among the pieces. And there, hidden with the glass and flowers, was a key. She stared at it for a second and then quickly picked it up; as she did, a flood of memories hit her.

“Please, Vilondra, you have to believe me,” said Elise.
Vilondra was combing her hair and rolled her eyes at the girl that was ranting abut Khivar and how he was evil and how she had caught him with Ava. She listened as she begged her to listen to her, to break out of the spell he had cast upon her.
“This is no spell, Elise. Please be happy for me. Khivar and I are in love. I know you and Zan did not end up together, but please do not try and take my happiness away,”
“I would not do that. You know me…I only want what is best for you and Zan. Why would I make this up?’
“To hurt me. You are jealous of my happiness. I know you do not like Ava and it must tear your heart to see my brother with her…do not fret; we will find someone for you,”
“Listen to you Lonnie,” Elise spit.
Vilondra’s eyes grew small and she put turned to face the brown-haired woman.
“Where did you hear that name?” she asked.
“From Ava,” Elise said defiantly. “It is what she and Khivar call you, as they laugh,”
Elise watched as the different emotions moved across Vilondra’s face. Finally the girl, smiled.
“Elise, please, I have much to do to prepare for my wedding, please go,” she said, her eyes belaying her sadness.
“Vilondra, please,”
“I am asking you nicely Elise,”
Elise nodded and gave a slight bow, leaving the Princess to stare at her as she left. Vilondra went to a vase at her beside her bed and waved her hand over the opening, pulling out a key. She tucked the key into one of the folds on her dress and quickly left her room. She stepped into the hall, looking to see if Elise was still near. Not seeing anyone, she hurried to the motion-shaft. It took her several levels down, into a part of the castle that had not seen the light of day for ages. It was like a dungeon, with bars separating into small cells. The ground was covered in dirt and the cells had cobwebs decorating them. She had been down here as a child with Zan, but it has been a long time. She looked around and then heard the call.
“Lonnie,” came a voice from a long dark tunnel.
Vilondra quickly ran down the tunnel and to a gate that led to an area just on the outskirts of the castle. There was Khivar and Colonel Nicho. They both smiled as they saw her. Khivar urged her to quickly open the gate and she did her eyes black pools void of emotion.
“My sweet Lonnie,” he cooed to her, reaching for her hand.
“You have out done yourself Sir,” Nicho said with a laugh.
Khivar was getting ready to say more, but they were cut off by noise coming from the motion-shaft.
“Who saw you come this way, my darling?” Khivar asked, probing her mind gently.
“No one,” Vilondra answered.
Khivar nodded.
“We must go,” he said quickly.
Nicho bowed to them both and slipped out of the now open gate. Vilondra let Khivar lead her back to the motion-shaft.
“I must put the key back before Zan sees it is missing,” she said, tucking the key back into her dress.
“Yes, you must. And you must not tell anyone about this,”
She can only nod as Khivar covers her lips with his own.

Isabelle opened her eyes and quickly put a hand to her mouth, covering the scream that threatened to escape from her throat. It had all been her fault, all of it. Had she just listened to Elise…they might have all lived. She looked at they key and knew that it had been helpful in their demise before, but now it would help them defeat Khivar. She ran a hand over the key and changed it into a small locket, quickly placing it around her neck and smiling. She walked to the bed and lay down, slowly reaching out for Liz.

Liz could hear someone calling for her. She quickly excused herself from the table and went into the small foyer at the entrance to the house. She opened her mind and heard Isabelle. She could hear excitement in her voice and she quickly reached out to her. Isabelle began to tell her of her memory and how they would use Khivar’s same tactic to beat him. Liz nodded in agreement and told Isabelle to keep the key safe and tell no one, not even those she trusted. They needed Khivar to be totally surprised. Isabelle agreed and then she apologized to Liz for not believing her. Liz was confused, but Isabelle could say no more as the connection was broken.
“Is everything alright?” Maria said, getting up from the stairs.
“Yes, it is,” Liz said, feeling more hopeful than she had in the last 48 hours.
“Well, spill it,”
Before Liz could say another word Nerathe and Elder Dasani were in the foyer, ready to begin the night trip into the city. Liz did not know why, but she decided to keep the information she had gotten from Isabelle to herself. Maria shot her a look that she answered with her own look. A nod from Maria and the four of them quickly slipped out the front doors of the home and into the cool night air.

you going to stay?”
“No, no Max hasn’t said anything about that. He’s more worried about the rest of us than himself.”
“Are you scared Liz?” Maria asked a slight catch in her voice.
“I am. At times I can remember so much about my life here and at other times I am so lost as to what I’m supposed to do this time around.”
“Did you have a good life?”
“You mean before?”
Maria nods and looks away, watching as Nerathe shares a laugh with the Elder.
“It was different. I guess I was happy…but I didn’t have you.” Liz says with a smile, patting Maria’s arm.
Maria shook her head in mock disgust, but Liz could see she was beaming with pride at the statement.
“You two would do well to keep up,” Nerathe managed from the front.
They both rolled their eyes and trotted to join him and Elder. They had stopped and Liz could only stare at the sights before her. There were people everywhere. It was evening, but the hustle and bustle of the city was still going strong. She stared at the castle and its gleaming walls, wondering which window, if any held Max.
“Come, let us move along,” Elder said, offering his arm to Liz.
Before they could move along, a loud siren began to wail.
“What is that?” Maria asked her eyes wide with fear. The sound reminded her of the sirens that went off during tornadoes. It chilled her and she clung to Nerathe’s arm.
“Khivar is getting ready to make a speech,” Nerathe said, the hatred apparent in his eyes.
The crowd began to swell around them as people made their way to the castle. It wasn’t long before it seemed like the whole city had gathered in mere minutes to see and hear Khivar. They did not have to wait long, as Khivar swept onto the balcony flanked my guards. He looked down at the crowd, nodding his approval. From the outer edge someone began to chant “Long live King Khivar.”
“It is one of his henchmen,” Elder hissed into Liz’s ear. “Soon everyone will be chanting it,”
No sooner did one start it, before the whole crowd was repeating it. Liz grimaced in disgust and looked over at Maria only to see that Maria had her eyes glued to Khivar and was chanting along as well. Liz tried to get her attention, but Maria ignored her. Liz looked to Nerathe and he nodded ever so gently to Liz. Then she felt it, she had thought nothing of the slight prickly sensation in her head, but now it was more of a throb. The people were being mind warped. Khivar waved his hand over the people; the chant turned into a murmur and then stopped completely.
“My fellow Antarians, it has come to my attention that there are those among you who have been given hope by the return of Zan. This is not the Zan of years ago. He is an Earthling, come disguised as your former King.”
Liz could hear people begin to whisper around her.
“That is right an Earthling…that you would allow such a thing to try and rule you is an insult to the sanctity of the Royal family of Antar,”
Liz could not believe what she was hearing. Khivar thought by smearing Max’s lineage he could get these people to give him the throne? She would give him a taste of his own medicine. She closed her eyes and began her own warp. She placed a hooded figure in back of the crowd and let the fireworks begin.
“It is you that is an insult to the Royal family,” bellowed a deep voice.
People turned to look at the shadowy figure that dared answer back to Khivar. Nerathe looked at the figure and quickly at Liz, his eyes flashing angrily. She ignored him and continued.
“Who dares speak to Khivar, show yourself,” Khivar demanded, his face turning red.
“You who have no royal blood in you, yet you speak of the true king of Antar as an insult. He is the rightful king of this planet and shall be made king again,” Liz continued.
She used her powers to break the mind control Khivar held over the people. “Long live King Zan, long live King Zan,” she began to chant and soon everyone was chanting it. Khivar pointed to the figure and motioned for a guard to grab him. Liz laughed to herself. She could feel the energy of those around her. It fulfilled her.
“Show yourself traitor,” Khivar yelled.
Liz moved the figure through the crowd and had him climb onto a platform where guards stood during the day. The figure slowly removed the cloak and there stood King Tristan, Zan’s father. Khivar moved back from the balcony, his face angry and confused.
“It can’t be…” Khivar sputtered.
Several guards began climbing the platform to catch the figure and Liz quickly shrunk the image into a birdlike creature she had seen on the walk and had it fly away.
The crowd was in an uproar and Khivar was unable to speak. He stared out to where the figure had been and then out into the crowd. He quickly looked over the crowd. Nerathe looked at Liz, but instead of the brooding glare she expected he was smiling. He ushered Maria in front of him and they disentangled themselves from the group.
“That was a nice display of your power Liz,” Nerathe said, stroking his chin and watching her.
“Yeah, well I could not stand to have that ass up there mocking the throne for his own good,”
“Um…guys, I don’t feel so good,” Maria mumbled, before almost fainting.
Nerathe grabbed her easily carrying her to a small shop. Re: Different Times ~AU~ *Update:6/27/05 Part 68
Part 68

When Liz rejoined Maria, she saw she was alone. It had to be late, as even when 3 moons, the marketplace had quickly gotten very dark. She got up and walked to the front window and saw Maria was there with Nerathe. She carefully opened the door and joined them.

“Is everything ok?” Maria asked.

“Everyone is fine…but the rebels in the camp are not. Khivar is going to attack them at dawn…we have to warn them,” Liz said, looking to Nerathe.

“How do you know this? I have told you how dangerous it is to enter Khivar’s mind-“

“I didn’t have too. Is-Vilondra told me,”

“There is word that she on Khivar’s side,” Nerathe said, his eyes growing small.

“She isn’t, she is on ours.

“I must go warn the camp.

“We will go back to the House of Elders,” Liz said. “And begin a strategy.”

“Be careful, both of you.” Nerathe said and quickly disappeared into the darkness.

“What is up with you and him?” Maria asked, looking over her shoulder as they made their way.

“What do you mean?”

“I get the feeling you don’t trust him.” Maria continued, still looking over her shoulder.

“I guess I feel better doing this on my terms. I think he doesn’t think I can handle this and I don’t want him to be right,”

“Wait…you are competing with you childhood friend?”

“No…well, I guess in some weird way I am. I didn’t even realize that was what I was doing,”

“It must be some innate feeling from your other life,” Maria says with a shrug.

“I’m sure.”

“So…did Michael say anything?” Maria asks, hopefully.

“He said to tell you he missed you,” Liz said, smiling. “And he can’t wait to see you again,”

She nodded and Liz could see her smiling to herself. She was glad Michael had said it without prodding. Maybe once they left this planet, he’d finally ask Maria to marry him.

“So tell me…do you have a plan?” Maria said, as they reached the House of Elders.

“Well, I have what I think is a plan. Let’s go to the library and I’ll tell you what I’m thinking,”

They entered the house and were greeted by one of the servants, who eyed them suspiciously.

“The House of Elders is closed at this hour,” he said, stopping the girls in their tracks.

“I’m sorry,” Maria said.

Liz quickly changed her hair back to its dark brown short page and the servant quickly bowed.

“My apologies Baroness,” he said. “I did not recognize you.”

“That means our disguises have worked Modwa. Will you please bring some food and drink to the library.” Liz said her voice steady and confident.

“As you wish.” he said, quickly bowing and scurrying out of the room.

“How did you know his name?” Maria asked, shaking her head in amazement.

“I don’t know…it was just there. I think memories from my past life and present are all intermingling. It’s weird,”

“But it can help us. I mean if you can remember something from then that we can use,”

“I haven’t, but Isabelle has. Look at this,” Liz said grabbing a book of architecture.

“Plans of the castle? How is that going to help?” Maria asked, perplexed.

“Right here…this is how Khivar got into the castle and killed us all,” Liz says pointing to a small line in an early plan.

“Oh a squiggly line…yes, now I see it,” Maria said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Liz shook her head and playfully gave Maria a shove.

“Let me explain,” Liz began, but was interrupted by Modwa returning with food and drink. He placed several trays on the large desk, bowed and left, shutting the door behind him.

“In this mind of yours, can you explain how everyone lives so damn long?”

Liz thought about it and shrugged.

“It’s in the DNA and I believe the time moves a lot faster on this planet, meaning your body does not keep up with the passing time.”

“That seems cool enough. Now tell me this master plan that all seems to point to that squiggly line.” Maria said, smiling largely.

“Ok on this plan, as you can see this is an entrance to the castle. It was used back in the War of the Planet.”

“Is peace a not a concept on this planet?”

Liz grabs the History of Antar book and flips a few pages, reading before continuing.

“Actually this first war was at the beginning of the planet’s civilization. The planet began to prosper and the dying planet of Ithaca waged war to take over and from this a dungeon was built to house the captured army soldiers of Ithaca.

Maria nods and Liz continues.

“But after that war, they never used the area again. And they built on top of it. Isabelle said that she; Michael and Max actually use to play down in the cells and passages. But if you look at recent plans of the castle, that area has been left off of them. But somehow Khivar knew they were there and had Isabelle give him the key to get his men in the castle… all the while acting like he was loyal to Antar. And this is exactly what we are going to use to get him.”

“Storm the castle and capture the traitor,” Maria said gleefully. “I like it!”

“But that’s not all,” Liz continued, feeling energized. “I have to make sure the mind-warp he has on the people is broken. This is going to be a fight like no other…everyone is going to realize what he has done and want revenge,”

“Can you do it? Is it safe?” Maria asked.

“I have to try Maria. When we were listening to the speech…it was so awful to feel the minds around me close up and take up his chant. It would be one thing if the people truly believe he was right…but to trick them and warp them…I can’t stand it.”

“What do you think will happen?”

“I’m hoping they are mad. When they get their memories back and see how they’ve been treated,”

“What about the people outside the city?”

“I don’t think they are being mind-warped unless he goes out to greet them in some sort of rally.”

“I just can’t believe he has been trying to be king for this long,”

“As long as there are those that know the truth, he won’t ever be able to take over completely. Unfortunately for him, his run as dictator is about to come to a halt,”

“How long do we have?”

“Isabelle said the plan was to make a big show on the anniversary of their deaths, which is in 7 days,”

“We only have a week to plan all this? That’s like almost no time at all…what if we aren’t ready? I don’t want to think about what sort of show Khivar will have planned to ‘celebrate’ their deaths,” Maria said quickly, ringing her hands and pacing.

“Maria, I promise we will be ready, we have to be ready. I don’t plan on seeing myself or anyone I love die again.”

Maria looked at Liz and nodded slowly, her eyes wide with fear, and her lower lip slightly quivering. She wanted to be strong for Liz, wanted to be able to fight side by side with her, but sometimes it all seemed like too much. But never for Liz, she was always strong and levelheaded and smart. And here she was on another planet, ready to wage a war.

“I know you won’t. What can I do?”

“You are going to be a distraction.”

“What I do best distract and destroy.” Maria said, going to the tray and picking up several items.

“Exactly. I’m thinking crazy end of the world distraction, crazy bigger than life distraction. Something that will get them to capture you and take you into the castle. Once there you faint, that way they have to take you into the infirmary. Once I know you are safely inside the walls, I will begin my un-warping and create another distraction. Hopefully whatever I create is enough to get the guards to leave you and come back out and examine the melee.”

“Just make it loud…something that will make my -the sky is falling- mumbo jumbo seem true. That should get them to investigate.”

“Right. That will give you time make sure the rebels are inside the castle and ready to attack Khivar and anyone that dare side with him.”

Liz watched as Maria slowly popped what looked like a piece of fruit into her mouth. Liz knew she was thinking over the plan and wondered if she would see through it. Liz didn’t need Maria to be a distraction, but she did need Maria to be safe. She had promised Michael she would do her best to keep Maria out of harm’s way, but even with out Michael’s prodding, Liz would have done it.

“So how many times did Michael tell you to keep me safe?” Maria said, chewing slowly.

“What are you talking about?”

“Liz…your aura is all over the place. So either you’re sick, or you’re trying to hide something.”

“What would I hide? We are here discussing the plan-“

“Right, the plan that gets me out of harms way. Did you think I wouldn’t notice?”

Liz sighed and rubbed her eyes.

“I hoped maybe you wouldn’t.”

“It’s ok. I know how much of a pain Michael can be. I guess it’s what I find so endearing about him.” she replied, smiling.

“I want at least one of us to make it back to Earth,” Liz said quietly.

“It will be all of us…or whoever decides Antar isn’t for them. I could get use to knowing a King,” Maria said, chuckling.

Liz was grateful for the way Maria could maneuver her way around a conversation and ease tension. Before she could think any more about it, there was the sound of the front doors of the house being opened and many footsteps entering. Liz ordered Maria out the way and held out her arm, waiting to strike.

Part 69
Part 69

The door burst open and among a throng of what looked like soldiers, was Nerathe. His face and clothing was dirty, but he was smiling.

“As I promised you all. It is Elise, Baroness of Antar. Knower of the Royals,” he said.

“What are you doing?” Liz asked, perplexed.

Several of the men bowed and Nerathe moved from the center of the group. He was smiling and walked to Liz.

“The rebels wanted proof and so I brought them to you.” he said with a sloppy bow.

“Are you drunk?” Liz hissed, grabbing Nerathe by the arm and pulling him from the group.

“Not at all.” he said, giggling.

“You are. This is not helping our cause. In fact you could have endangered the men by bringing them here.”

“I did no such thing. Remember, I am a warrior too Elise. And these men would rather die than be caught by Khivar. Besides, you too need protection.”

“I can protect myself just fine.” Nerathe and Michael shared more than looks Liz thought, shaking her head in disbelief.

“Speech, speech,” went the murmur through the throng of men. Liz looked about and saw all eyes were on her and Nerathe. He grinned widely and again bowed.

“I suggest you give the men what they want.” He managed.

“I suggest you go to bed and let the alcohol work its way through you.”

They both stared at each other defiantly and then finally Nerathe looked away. His shoulders slumped in defeat, but the fire was still in his eyes.

“Men, please treat the Baroness well, as she has traveled a long way to fulfill her destiny.”

The word destiny made Liz shiver. Was this her destiny? Had this been what had pulled her back to Roswell? What if she had ignored the scar and never returned to Roswell?

You were meant to help us Elise. There is nothing you could have done to prevent you from being here for this great moment in our history

Liz looked up at Nerathe. He was at the top of the stairs and looked at her knowingly. She didn’t want to believe her destiny was predetermined; her destiny was what she made it.

“Ok chica, you need to tell this men something and get them out of here before Khivar is alerted.

“Right. Sorry.” Liz replied.
She walked to the center of the group and they all hushed, waiting for her to speak, many clamoring to get a good look at her.

“Is it really you, Baroness?” said an older gentleman.

“It is I. I have returned to end of rule of Khivar once and for all.”

This brought a whoop from the group and Liz put her hands up to hush everyone again.

“This will not be an easy battle, nor will it not have its bloodshed. But I promise, when it is over, Khivar shall rule no more.”

“And what of King Zan? I have heard word he has given his blessing to Lord Khivar.”

“I have seen it with my own eyes Baroness. Out in the countryside…King Zan, telling us all to listen and praise Khivar.”

“Do you believe it, even upon seeing it?” Liz questioned.

This got the men to look at each other and think.

“I do not.” Said a large muscular man. “It is a trick King Zan would never desert his people.”

“You most all hold onto that faith. If you let Khivar think he has won, even a little…he will use that to take over for good.”

“Long live King Zan, long lives the Royals of Antar.” Began the chant.

“We will all meet again to talk of plans. But for now, be safe and have your eyes and ears open.”

Several men bowed and they slowly made their way from the house. Modwa locked the door and bid Maria and Liz goodnight.

“I wonder what kind of alcohol they have on this planet? Nerathe looked mighty happy.”

“I can’t believe he lead a group that large through the city to this house. What if Khivar had seen them?”

“Do not be alarmed Elise.” said Elder Dasani. “Nerathe would never put anyone in harms way. I think his pride has been harmed more than anything.”

“His pride?” Maria asked, looking quizzically at Elder.

“Yes, he can sense Elise is hiding much from him. In his mind he sees it as her distrust. You were at one time very close.”

Liz nodded.

“I get a feeling he does not feel I can manage this battle. My pride is hurt too.” Liz said more forcefully than intended.

“You would do well to talk with Nerathe. You both are very powerful and stubborn.” Elder said and bowed to both ladies before shuffling to his room.

“It’s late Liz. You will have time to think and talk about this in the morning, we need to get our rest.”

Next Morning…

“Elise is still asleep?” Nerathe questioned Maria, as she trudged into the kitchen.

“Good morning to you too.” came her mumbled reply.

“My apologies Maria. I bid you good morning.”

Maria rolled her eyes and grabbed a cup of what looked like coffee. Nerathe watched as she carefully inhaled the aroma and finally took a sip.

“This is just what I needed.” Maria said.

“It is similar to what you call coffee on Earth.”

“How are you feeling this morning? You were slightly inebriated last night.”

This caused Nerathe to turn several shades of pink and look away from Maria. She shook her head and laughed.

“It’s ok, I’ve seen Michael drunk before. You were quite tame compared to your cousin.”

“There is something in the fermented grains that makes me forget my manners.” Nerathe finally said. “I apologize for anything I may have done to embarrass you or the Baroness.”

“Apology accepted. Elise I believe is upstairs training, meditating or something like that.”

“She is angry?”

“Not that I know of. Maybe you should talk to her?” Maria said, taking her cup and walking to the sun room just off the kitchen where Elder Dasani was sitting with several others.

Nerathe carefully scratched his eyebrow, staring after Maria. He was hesitant to talk to Elise. He knew she was holding back and he hated to admit it bothered him. As children they had shared so much and even though she did not remember, it hurt him. Elise was the only girl, now woman that had ever gotten under his skin. When she had come to him after living for many months behind the castle doors, she had changed. She was no longer the innocent girl of his childhood. Instead she had blossomed into a beautiful woman. A woman who did not love him the way he loved her. But he had accepted it and when he saw her with Zan, he knew no one would be able to captivate her heart like Zan.
”But Elise, it is you he loves. I do not understand how you can be so calm about his betrothal to another.”
“I have no choice Nerathe. It is for the good of our planet. Zan must marry Ava of Kaspar in order to bring peace between the two planets.
“She is not of royal blood, the law of Antar states the crowned Prince must marry within his caste.”
“There are always exceptions, Nerathe. Please let us not discuss this further. I want to know about you and this girl Rath tells me he has seen you with on several occasions.”
“Rath knows not of what he speaks.”
“Oh Nerathe, do not be shy. I am happy for you. You must bring her to one of the balls at the castle.”
Nerathe rolled his eyes, but could not help but smile. Elise’s demeanor was contagious.

He broke out of his memory and went looking for Elise.

Liz was sitting in the middle of the room, meditating. She could feel the power of the planet just on the outer recesses of her mind and she longed to reel the power in. As she sat there she could feel a presence and before opening her eyes knew it was Nerathe.

“How are you feeling?” she said as she opened her eyes to look at him.

“Embarrassed.” He said quietly.

“It’s been a long couple of days, Nerathe. I understand your need for release.” Liz said simply, getting up from the floor.

“I appreciate your forgiveness Elise. But my behavior is still unacceptable. You were right to chastise me. I could have alerted Khivar’s spies to your whereabouts. I did not think-“

“Please, Nerathe, I am still safe. There was no harm done. I can see you have something else on your mind?”

“Was it not you that told me it was not polite to intrude in ones mind?” he said with a small grin.

Liz shrugged and smiled back at him.

“I did not have to pry…I can sense your emotions.” She said.

“You are going stronger each day. The words of your father are true.” Nerathe said.

“My father? What does this have to do with my father?”

“Before your father...died…I remember him telling me about what he saw for your future. Elise…he knew things that no one could know. He talked about how you were to be born on a far planet and return to set things right. I asked him to tell you. But he said he could not…to know too much of your own future might change the way things were supposed to happen.”

“He knew this was going to happen to Antar but he could not stop it until it was too late. Someone figured out he knew… and killed him.”

“Khivar.” Nerathe stated.

Liz nodded and went to the table where she was had several books from the library. She opened them and laid them on the table. There was a book on the palace layout, one of the history of Kaspar and several on the alliances of all five planets in the system. Together with Nerathe to help her Liz laid out the plan. They would set up men on the four corners of the palace and take one group in the deserted dungeon area. Liz scrapped the idea with Maria, opting to keep Maria close to her instead. She wanted to be sure when they went for Khivar he was truly surprised. She told Nerathe about her plan to break the mind warp of the people.

“Elise…that requires much power, Khivar is very strong.”

“We need the Granolith.”

“The Granolith?”

“Yes, I will need that to help me with breaking Khivar’s hold on the people.”

“I do not understand how that can help us. It is nothing more than a relic of the people.”

“That is what I thought too. But as I was meditating it came to me. I could see it clearly. While I was on Earth, I could hear voices trying to guide me. But only after I returned to Roswell, where the Granolith was hidden. The Queen and my father were working together along with the scientist that helped re-create us. The Granolith has the essence of the people of Antar…past and present.”

Nerathe said nothing and just looked at Liz, finally bowing slightly.

“I will go and procure the Granolith.” He said.

“Take only those you trust with your life Nerathe.”

“As you wish, Baroness.” He said and left Liz staring after him.

She was a little bewildered by his bowing but before she could think more, she heard him in her mind: Thank you for finally trusting me. Their relationship had changed once again. He now saw Liz for what she was destined to be; the savior of the people. Nerathe may have been saying it over and over, but until that very moment when Liz put her trust in him, he had not believed it.

Part 70
Part 70

While Nerathe went to find and bring back the Granolith, Liz poured over more books. The language was coming back to her and she was able to read more and more pages. She read about Zan’s father and grandfather. His family had founded Antar thousands of years before and had ruled since then. While there had always been skirmishes of unrest, this was the longest period of time someone other than the Royal had ruled. King Tristan had been interested in stepping back from the throne and setting up what could only be called a democratic society, but with his untimely death he had not been able to see it through. It then fell into Zan’s hands and he had worked diligently to keep his father’s dream alive. He had talked to the Council of Planets, getting them to see how if it worked on Antar, the biggest of the five planets, it could work anywhere. But Khivar has put an end to that, bringing with his lies, the bickering with Kaspar.
She looked for more information regarding the Granolith and finally found a chapter devoted to discussion of the Granolith. The picture in the book was not of a spaceship or even of the cone shaped tube she and Maria had arrived on. Instead the picture showed an orb graphic and in the center was a long crystal. The graphic sat on a large stone pillar. The Granolith was said to give those who touched it strength as well as health. Many felt it lead those that passed on to the next world.

“Where’s Nerathe?” Maria asked, stepping into the room.

“I sent him to get the Granolith.”

“That thing we came on? Why?”

“It’s more than just a ship Maria. Look at this picture.”

“That’s the granolith?”

“Exactly. There has to be something on that ship that looks like this symbol. It holds the key.

“Do you think Khivar knows?”

“I don’t think he does. According to this book, the Granolith was nothing more than a relic created by Zan’s father to help promote democracy and free-thinking. He felt that if the people could put the energy they used to praise him into something else it would alleviate any tension once he put a democracy in place. I believe the Queen and my father used that to change the Granolith.”

“So even though they may have changed it, Khivar wouldn’t know about the change. To him it would still be some worthless relic” Maria said.

“Right, that is what it would be to him.”

“So you think this thing is on the ship we came on?”

“I hope so.”

“You need to be sure Khivar doesn’t know anything about this. Cause if he does…”

“I need to see Isabelle. If anyone can get him to open up, it will be her.”

“We really don’t have too many options open to us, just be careful Liz.

“I have all afternoon until Nerathe gets back. No better time that the present to do this.”

“I’ll be here when you get back.” Maria says as she watches Liz get into a meditating position.

Liz quickly calls out to Isabel, careful not to scare her.

“Liz, is it you?”

“It is. I need your help. Are you alone?”

“At the moment. But I’m out in the garden, let me get back to my bedroom.”

Liz waits until Isabel speaks again.

“Ok, I’m here. Is everything ok?”

“So far. How are you? How’s the baby?”

“We’re fine. Khivar treats me well.”

“Good. Did Max tell you I could...project myself?”

“Project yourself? Like astral projection?”

“Yes, exactly like that. Are we safe in your room?”

“As far as I know we are. Khivar has cameras but I managed to find the security room and noticed they are mainly on all doors that lead in and the hallways. He doesn’t even have anything trained on Max or the others.”

Liz says nothing and a few minutes later Isabel sees the air before her shimmering and appearing in the shimmer, Liz.

“Oh.” Isabel says in shock, her eyes wide.

“This is easier than being in your head.”

Isabel reaches out to touch Liz, her hand floating through the shimmer.

“Does it hurt?”

“Not really. It seems everyday I am here I get stronger.”

“What about your memories?”

“I...remember a lot. But I need your help.”

“Of course, I’ll do whatever I can.”

“I need information…from Khivar.”

“What sort of information? He really doesn’t tell me too much. He has me wrapped up in this little fantasy where we marry and I inherit the throne and by default then he does as well.”

“That would mean…Max would have to die.”

Isabel’s eyes shine with sadness and she nods.

“I know. His hatred for Max is so pure Liz. It’s scary.”

“I need you to think Isabel, has he ever mentioned the granolith.”

“The granolith? No, I don’t think he has. Why, what is it?”

“Are you sure Isabel? I need you to be 100% sure.”

“He’s never mentioned it to me Liz, but I can’t be sure he hasn’t mentioned it to someone else.”

“It’s powerful Isabel. It’s going to help us defeat him for good.”

“How? What kind of thing is it?”

“It’s a relic created by your father to give the people something besides himself to worship.”

“I thought you said it was powerful?”

“It’s more than that. Your mother created it along with my father and the scientists that re-created us.”

“Juxane…her husband is a scientist. He would know if Khivar knows about it.”

“Juxane?”

“She was my nanny, we can trust her completely. Let me call her.”

Isabel goes to the door and is immediately greeted by a guard.

“Please tell Juxane to come to my quarters immediately.”

“Yes, Princess,”

“Liz, there are so many that are against Khivar. They just needed us to return, to give them hope.”

“Soon his reign will be over…forever.” Liz says. “When she gets here I am going to disappear back into your mind.”

No sooner are the words out of Liz’s mouth than the door to Isabel’s room swooshes open and Juxane steps into the room, bowing slightly.

“You asked to see me Princess,” Juxane says, the guard eyeing her suspiciously.

“Yes. Thank you Lirpa that will be all.”

The guard bows to Isabel and leaves the two women alone. Liz has quickly put herself back into Isabel’s mind.

“Your husband helped re-create us, didn’t he?” Isabel says, walking out to her balcony. “You said he was one of the scientists?”

Juxane looks at Isabel and nods.

“It is as you say.”

“Where is he now?”

“He should be in the lab.”

“Did your husband help create the granolith?”

Juxane’s eyes open wide and she hurries onto the balcony with Isabel, shutting the doors to the room.

“You know of the true power of the Granolith. Did King Zan tell you of it? Is it back here on Antar?” she asked excitedly.

“What exactly is this Granolith?” Isabel asks. “And does Khivar know of its existence?”

“Khivar does, every Antarian does. Do you not remember?” Juxane replies.

Isabel looks out into the city and searches her memory for anything related to the Granolith. Liz can feel her searching and stops her. Do you trust her? Yes, Liz,I trust her completely. I am going to make my presence known.

“I do not. But there is someone here that needs the information you seem able to provide.”

Juxane quickly looks around, scared. For some reason she is afraid of being captured as a traitor to Khivar. As she backs away from Isabel, there is a shimmer beside her and Liz appears. Juxane jumps and then quickly bows.

“It is true. The Knower lives on Antar.” She says coming up from her bow.

“How did you know?” Liz asks.

“My son was one of the men bought back to the House of Elders last evening.”

“I can not stay for much longer. I need to see your husband. I need more information about the Granolith.”

“I will tell him. Is the House of Elders safe?”

“It is. Please send him tonight, if possible.”

“As you wish Baroness.”

“I have to go. Both of you be careful.”

And with that Liz disappears, pushing herself back to her body. Maria is sitting in a chair, and jumps up as Liz opens her eyes.

“Are you ok, Liz? You don’t look so good.” Maria says quickly helping Liz to her feet.

“I-I feel so weak.” Liz says, hanging onto Maria.

“I think you should lie down…you’re very pale.”

Together they walk to the room they share and Maria helps Liz get into bed.

“I’m so tired all of a sudden.”

“I’m going to get Elder…you weren’t even this bad the other night when you took me with you.”

“I just need to close my eyes…” Liz whispers. She is asleep before Maria leaves the room.

~ Back at the Castle ~

“Can your husband safely go to and see Liz tonight?” Isabel asks, taking Juxane’s hands.

“He would consider it an honor, Princess. He does not fear for his life. Many of us do not; we only hope to have Antar restored to the peaceful planet it was before.”

“I know Liz will do everything in her power to end Khivar’s rule.” Isabel says. “She is a formidable enemy.”

“The Baroness and her family have been part of the royal sector for many years. No one thought as a child that she possessed the power of her father. He was wise to have hidden it from all.”

“Juxane will you tell me another story of my childhood?” Isabel asks, her eyes getting a faraway look.

“Of course Princess, shall I get your brush and comb set and we will sit as we did long ago?”

Isabel can’t help but shiver in anticipation, remembering the times she spent with Juxane combing her hair and talking of her adventures.

*****************************************************

“She went on one of her out of body trips and came back looking sick.” Maria tells Elder Dasani. “I think this is the first time it has made her this way…do you have any idea why?”

“She is pushing herself to much.”

“She won’t stop Elder; she won’t stop until this is all over. Could she…die from this?”

“From using her gifts? No my child, she can not. It is possible for her to lose her gifts though.”

“You have to talk some sense into her.”

“She is a selfless one. Even as a child she cared more for those around her more than herself.”

“Will you talk to her? Please?” Maria pleads.

“Do not fret Maria. I will tell Elise of the dangers. For now let her rest. It will do her good.

Maria watches Elder Dasani grabs his walking cane and glides to the front door. He turns to Maria and smiles.

“You must believe it.” He says in a whisper before disappearing out the massive doors.
