A Mother’s Love Remembered
Disclaimer: I’m borrowing characters from George Lucas’s vast universe. I own nothing, so don’t start thinking I do. I also got a great deal of inspiration from Matthew Stover’s Revenge of the Sith, which is obviously based on Lucas’s screenplay for the movie.
Rating: YTEEN
Author’s Note: This takes place fifteen years after the final prequel, and I dunno how many (five-ish?) years before A New Hope.
***
A girl was alone in her bedroom, the dim glow of her message communicator’s view screen the only light radiating around her as she sat in the darkness. Her best friend, Mareena, had just sent her a short memo – Happy Birthday! How does it feel to be fifteen?
Not much different than fourteen, to be honest, the girl thought. She stroked a reply into her comm’s keypad and sent it to Mareena before she shut the thing down altogether. It was midnight, after all – actually five minutes past midnight – and she was tired. Besides, she was anxious to get to sleep. She was desperate to finally finish the dream she’d begun so many nights before, but had never successfully been able to.
It always began the same. She stood alone, in an eerily sterile room. The whiteness of the walls were blinding, the harsh tang of chemical odor in the air wafted into her nostrils like an invisible alien life form come to invade her body’s respiratory system. The air itself was like ice against her skin. She felt naked, but when she looked down, she saw that she was draped in white robes. She had an odd feeling like she should be crying…perhaps even screaming, but instead she stood silent, almost solemn. She suddenly sensed another being near her and realized she hadn’t been alone at all – was this another person, maybe? She looked to her right and caught a brief glimpse of this person, also draped in white, but before she could make out a face, the figure was whisked away in a blur of intense light that rivaled the power of two suns. The departure of the figure caused her great sadness – an anguish she’d never known in the serene existence she’d had growing up as a princess in the royal palace in Alderaan’s capital city. Before she could focus on her anguish and the fleeting figure, however, she became distracted by a voice in her dream. A soft voice, a sad voice indeed, but a loving voice nonetheless. But when she turned around to see who the speaker was, she always woke up.
Tonight, she thought, tonight will be different. Tonight I will see who’s speaking to me. And she thought it through and resolved to make it so.
She climbed into her bed, pulled a blanket up over her body and nestled her head into a soft pillow. She focused on keeping her breathing even as she tuned out the soft noises of the night. She no longer heard the soft hooting of the Burlatch that nested in the tree outside of her window, nor did she hear the tinkle of the windchimes that her father had hung from the tree’s branch when she was a small girl.
“Ancient legend says the chimes chase away evil spirits,” he’d told her. She had taken to having bouts with nightmares when she was three-years-old, after the old cook at the palace had told her a ghost story about a specter who liked to lure children into caves and eat their spleens. Bail Organa, her father, had promptly fired the cook.
Before she knew it, sleep had overcome her and the all-too recognizable setting of the stark white dream world had come into view. The weird familiarity of everything around her gripped her senses – the brightness of the room, the scent of the air, the feel of the atmosphere breathing frosty puffs of air against her face, arms, body…
Then the figure was there again. This time she wanted to call out to the figure, to beg it to stay, to tell it she’d be lonely if it left her, but she had no voice in her dream. All her mouth would submit to do was maintain its somber expression of silence.
And then the voice…
She listened closely to wrap her thoughts around the words. They were garbled. She strained to hear.
“…I’m so sorry…”
She felt a pang in her chest as she listened.
“…I love you…”
Consciousness was fighting her. Her body was struggling to come out of this dream-state, but she fought back. Not yet, she told herself. Not until she saw with her own eyes.
As it is sometimes in dreams, she found herself moving in slow motion as she struggled to turn to see whose voice was speaking such words of melancholy. It would have been easier to run with boulders attached to her ankles than turn quickly, but a concentrated effort met with success. There, in the farthest corner of the room, stood a petite woman – ashen-faced, but bearing many of the same characteristics she herself had, most notably, her long, dark hair. The woman was young – certainly not even thirty standard years old – and her beautiful eyes were brimming with tears. She clutched something to her chest.
“Who are you?” the girl wanted desperately to ask, though she had a feeling she already knew.
The woman repeated her mantra, clutching whatever was in her hands even tighter. “I’m sorry…I love you…”
“Sorry for what?” the girl heard herself scream inside her own head.
The woman dropped her hands to her side and let a small pendant drop to the white-tiled floor with a hollow clatter. The girl felt herself slipping from this place, just as the pendant slipped through the woman’s fingers.
“No!” she shouted, and this time her voice reverberated from the walls.
The woman clasped her hands to her mouth and gasped, “Name her Leia…”
“Mother?” choked the girl, Leia. And as she finally succumbed to waking from her slumber, she heard a whisper in the night.
“I love you.”
Illumination in the darkness.
