Title: Irreversible
Rating: TEEN
Category: I’ll call it CC but I’m not really focusing on the couples.
Disclaimer: I’m writing purely for entertainment. I don’t own anything. Please don’t sue.
Summary: I stole the idea for this fic from the movies, Memento and Irreversible. This starts right before Graduation when Liz is getting flashes of their deaths. Then we work backwards from there. We learn that things aren’t what they seemed. I’ll be using some dialogue from the show throughout my story (in italics) to weave what we know with what we don’t know.
Part 1
In the shadows outside of the Crashdown, a man stands looking up at Liz’s balcony. He thinks ruefully about the irreversible chain of events he set off the last time he was here. The cascade of inevitable “one thing leads to another” that brought them to this point, this point where the only people he ever cared about were going to be murdered. Well, not if he can help it. He cannot see the couple inside, but he knows they are in there. He knows what they are doing, what they are always doing. Geez, he didn’t mean to encourage more making out. But he knows he needs to give them what they expect; they need more information. He hopes this will be enough because there is no time to create more flashes.
He bows his head while waiting for the proper moment. “Take care my former King,” he prays silently. “Make a new destiny, here, on Earth.” He shakes his head sadly thinking that even if his plan works, their lives will not be easy. They will probably always be on the run, and they will have to do it without his help. He has already been summoned to his new duty. He hates it. He briefly contemplates again the possibility of turning himself in to the FBI to draw attention away from the pod squad and prolong his stay on this beautiful planet. But he knows it will not work. His capture will likely only fuel the return of the alien fanatics in the government and make everyone’s lives even more difficult.
Inside on Liz’s bed, Max and Liz mumble to each other in between kisses.
“Tough job,” Liz mumbles with a smile.
“Yeah, somebody's gotta do it,” Max returns.
“So what's happening to me, Max? I mean, what does this mean? Am I becoming one of you?”
“I don't know, but whatever is happening, we're together now.”
Outside, the man suddenly stiffens as if sensing a presence we cannot see.
“Time’s up,” he says to himself. Then, he shuts his eyes as if in meditation.
Inside, Liz suddenly has flashes of being killed. This time she also clearly sees a man at a podium, speaking.
“Did you see something?” Max questions, sensing her reaction to the visions.
“I saw you get killed again,” Liz answers. “Oh wait, wait a second. There was someone there. I've seen him before.”
“Who was it?” Max prods.
Liz gets up and goes to her dresser searching for a book.
“That face!” Liz exclaims, trying to jog her memory. “I know I've seen that face before. Where is that?”
She searches through her things and finally picks up a book, pointing excitedly. “This is him! He was there the moment that you got, the moment that you got killed. I mean, he was giving a speech or something.”
Liz walks back over to Max. She brings the book back over to show him the author's picture.
“Bryce McCain?” Max asks, immediately recognizing him. “He's going to be the guest of honor at the UFO convention,” he informs Liz.
As an employee of the UFO center, Max knows all the details of the UFO convention. He looks at Liz somberly, “We die June 12th.”
“That's less than two weeks,” Liz whispers disbelievingly. She had hoped they would have more time.
Max nods, “We have twelve days to figure out how to stop it.”
The man outside opens his right hand and smiles at the lone white candy mint in his hand. He tosses it in the air and catches it in his mouth and then, he is gone as mysteriously as he came. But if he had heard the misinterpretation of the flash he had projected, he would have muttered, “Shit!”

Part 2
Hours earlier
A figure dressed in a long trench coat is standing in the shadows outside of Michael’s apartment. He observes the couple inside carefully and then pops a handful of tic tacs as he mutters to himself. He glances again at the couple making out on the couch inside and strains to hear the conversation through the open window.
“Congratulations,” Max says.
“You said that already,” Liz returns with a smile.
“Oh,” Max sounds disappointed.
As they kiss again, the man outside glances away frowning. He has planted enough false images that they should believe Liz has the power of premonition. He blames himself for the terrible position his former king is now in.
“But I like the way you say it,” Liz continues seductively.
“You college girls,” Max returns slyly.
“Hey, we wanna be loved for our minds, not our bodies,” Liz protests.
Max smiles and nods.
“Are you serious?” Liz asks turning serious. “You know, about wanting to come with me?”
Max brushes the hair back from her face and looks into her eyes. “I've never been more serious.” Then, unable to resist, he returns to their previous seduction game, “What a great... mind... you have…”
His hands begin to move inside her shirt, up her back.
“Oh, I don't think that's my mind, but keep looking, I'm sure you'll find it,” Liz laughs.
The man outside rolls his eyes and averts his eyes again. He hopes they can get serious in a hurry.
He mutters to himself, “Well, here goes nothing. It better work.”
Inside Liz continues to encourage Max, “Remember I can tell the future? And tonight, your future looks very, very bright.”
The man outside smiles as he hears Liz’s last words, knowing his plan has been successful so far. Then, he closes his eyes to concentrate.
Liz and Max continue kissing and suddenly Liz has flashes of Max, Isabel, Michael and herself being shot. She sits up with a gasp.
“What?” Max asks, concerned.
“We're all going to be killed,” Liz announces.
“You just had a flash?” Max asks incredulously. Liz’s powers seemed to be growing unbelievingly fast. If her premonition were true, she developed these powers not a moment too soon.
Liz nods. “What do we do. . .” but outside, the man quickly directs his outstretched hand at Max’s head. Liz never finishes her sentence. She looks temporarily confused and then, suddenly, gets down to business. She grabs her cell phone out of her rear pants pocket and speed dials her best friend.
“Huh?”
Liz looks at Max impatiently. “We’ve got to warn the others.”
Outside, the man smiles as he makes his getaway. It was about time he got rid of that programming. He can’t believe the humans hadn’t broken away from that whining, helpless, “always look to the king for answers” program. He would have removed it sooner but he never expected it to last that long. Nacedo was such an idiot. No wonder he let the Skins and Kivar get the best of them.

1 hour later
Jim, Kyle, Isabel, Jesse, Maria, and Michael listen as Max and Liz share what just happened.
“You believe it? You think this could really happen?” Jesse asks dubiously.
“I think we should all take this seriously,” Max answers.
“Okay, so, where do we get popped, when do we get popped, and who pops us?” Michael cuts to the chase.
“I don't know. The flashes were sort of impressionistic,” Liz answers hopelessly.
“We need more information,” Jim says.
“Where were you?” Isabel questions, hoping to learn more. “Where were you when you had the flashes?”
“Here,” Liz replies.
“You said you got these flashes from touching people,” Kyle says suspiciously.
“We were,” Liz pauses embarrassed. “I was . . . touching people.”
Maria smiles, “How cozy.”
Isabel tries not to laugh, “I think we should just focus on what we do next.”
“Right. We should all stay on guard,” Max agrees. “Ah, Liz and I will attempt to . . . uh . . .”
Kyle finishes, “Achieve another flash?”
Max shrugs, “It seems like the thing to do.”
As the gang parts ways, a figure reappears in the shadows, watches briefly and then follows Max and Liz back to the Crashdown.

Part 3
Hours earlier
At a motel just outside Roswell, two Government officials gently interrogate an innocent woman. Always a law-abiding citizen, she doesn’t understand why these men make her so wary. This day has been so surreal. First, she narrowly escapes death with help from the most unlikely couple, a couple of teenagers. She witnessed something she barely believes, let alone understands. And then, before she even makes it home to count her blessings, she is approached by these men and escorted firmly to this motel room. Motel room? Not that she knew the difference, but she checked their badges and they appeared pretty official and legitimate looking. But why did they drag her here? And why were they trying to get her to implicate these children in something sinister?
One man is standing behind her, hovering. She sits back up in her chair, takes a deep breath and studies the surveillance photos again. Photos of regular high school children. Why was the FBI hounding these poor kids?
“The sooner you help us, Mrs. Mills, the sooner you can return home.”
The woman shakes her head. She doesn’t want these children to get in any trouble. She owes them her life. But she can sense the impatience of the two men and knows the subtle threats will resume soon. She stares at the photos, wishing there was another way.
Mrs. Mills protests, “They helped me. They saved my life.”
Looking out the curtained window, another man pulls out a piece of gum before taunting her, “I'm sure your two children will be very happy to see you. It's getting late.”
She looks up at the man standing behind her, afraid. Hesitantly, she points to a picture of Liz, then of Max.
The man behind her straightens, satisfied, “Thank you.”
Mrs. Mills stands shaking, gathering her things, “Can I go now?”
“You were never here,” the man warns and she nods in agreement. “You never saw us.”
She nods again and he smiles coldly. The man by the window escorts her out the door. He returns to the table to watch his partner sorting through a stack of photos. He singles out four final photos of Michael, Max, Isabel and Liz.
“These four. This is everyone. Now we can move.”
“Where?”
“Some place where they're all together. Indoors. A facility we can lock down. Some place where they won't expect it to happen.”
Outside in the shadows, Mr. Trench Coat curses silently to himself. Maybe he was setting them up instead of helping them. Maybe he was making the premonition come true. No, no. He must believe that knowledge is power. The pod squad will decipher the premonitions and find a way to thwart the Special Unit’s plans. Never mind that he can’t tell them everything. He will give them the information they need. If they stick together, they will find a way out of this. He hopes.
