Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

Ok, so I'm clearly behind in the world of Harry Potter, having just begun reading it about three weeks ago. I'm currently about halfway through Chamber Of Secrets and loving it so far. Has anyone read this book? If so, what were/are your thoughts on it?

Ann, that's my least fave of the series. I don't know why I dislike it so much. How are you liking it so far?

I actually loved it. I finished it about a week ago and just started on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. What did you think of that one?

Hi, Ann! I'm Caroline...Tracie's resident HP geek.

I must say that Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite book of the series. I enjoy them all, but for some reason, POA really sticks with me as a really great story. And one of my favorite characters is Professor Lupin, so it stands to reason.

As for Chamber of Secrets, it's the only book out of the series I had to struggle to get "sucked into," but once I did, I really enjoyed it. But remembering back to the first time I picked it up, Dobby just really annoyed me.

Perhaps it's the odd speech pattern of house-elves...I dunno. I've never exactly loved house-elves on the whole throughout the series so far, but I do like Dobby better these days!

So, I hope you continue to enjoy the series as you work your way further into it. It really is an awesome set of books.

PoA is good, it's very very good. But my all time fav is GoF. I love the whole H/R shippiness that starts really showing up.

I really love GOF once Harry gets to school. It's getting him there that sometimes drags on the reread.

But I do love the book, Tracie (especially the budding R/Hr!)...in fact, I have to say, I love them all. Really. Does that surprise you at all?

i recently (last week) re-read OotP for the 9 millionth time, and I'm really starting to consider that my new favorite

Hey Caroline! It's nice to meet you. What can I say about Dobby? Well, I actually really really liked Dobby. He was so cute! And so enamored with Harry. There were times I just wanted to hug the poor little guy when he'd get mad at himself for saying something he shouldn't have. I think the only thing about Chamber of Secrets that annoyed the heck out of me was Gilderoy. Couldn't stand the guy! He made me want to gag just reading his part but the movie just made that feeling stand out even more. Ugh!

I can see the H/R likeieness (ok, so it isn't really a word) in Chamber of Secrets. Especially after Harry saves the day and Hermione goes running to Harry and Ron. That hesitation between the two of them speaks volumes.

Tracie- I'm not sure what OotP is. Which one is that?

OOTP is Order of the Phoenix, Ann.

For easy reference:

PS/SS = Philosopher's Stone (Great Britain)/Sorcerer's Stone (USA)
COS = Chamber of Secrets
POA = Prisoner of Azkaban
GOF = Goblet of Fire
OOTP = Order of the Phoenix
HBP = Half-Blood Prince

And I will say, Dobby is the only house-elf I like. It took some time, but he DID end up growing on me.

Oh ok thank you! That is actually incredibly helpful considering every time I finish a book, I have to ask the librarian at our public library what the next one is. LOL! You'd be amazed at how librarians look at you when you're 25 and reading books intended for kids.

I should really reread Chamber of Secrets, actually. I didn't really like Harry Potter all that much when I started reading the books.... actually, I did like them, I was just one of those stubborn people who kept putting them down as kids books.... but once I read GOF I loved them... and now that I've read HBP I've turned semi-fanatic, so I need to look back at them all again.

You'd be amazed at how librarians look at you when you're 25 and reading books intended for kids.

To be quite honest, I know A LOT of adults who enjoy these books MORE than kids do. My firends, coworkers, boss...even my 67 year old mother.

They're really so much more than books for kids. They appeal to such a broad audience...it's amazing. And I'm never ashamed to admit I'm a fan!

refused to read them for years because of that. I did too, but I wasn't so much about them being kids books, I was more thinking that they had to be a fad type of thing. Anyhow, the thing that go t me hooked was a Roswell/HP crossover fic written by my friend and fellow ORB, Margo.

I had NO HP experience whatsovever, but you know me, all about Roswell

, so I read it, and I was totally caught up in the whole HP aspect of it and had to start reading the books. I'm so glad

Well, yeah, actually my main reason for not reading them was because my sister kept trying to make me read them. lol I literally only started reading them because I fell in love with Rupert/Ron when I saw the first movie. And I was a shipper from the start. I remember on the way home from the theater saying to my sister, "Okay, so it's going to end up... Ron and Hermione, and Harry and... Jenny?" "Ginny. But... I don't know about that one."

I think I'm probably like that with people who haven't read them. I'm so "Oh, they're soooo good, you've GOT to read them!" that I probably turn them off with my extreme enthusiasm!

But when people finally cave under my pressure, they always come back to me and say they are hooked and absolutely love them. So I haven't stopped singing their praises yet!

And I was a Ron/Hermione 'shipper first, no doubt. I began 'shipping Harry/Ginny thanks to some really well-written fan fiction (After the End by Arabella & Zsenya, to be specific) and was SO thrilled when they actually became a canon pairing. Guh. No words can describe.

I think I created a monster w/Mum. She now wants her own set of books. And she still has all 3 of my Potter DVDs!
