Thanks for the fb! :D

Gerry, poor Max was too embarrassed to say anything. Thanks for reading!
Lisa, you'll get a little more info on Max and Emma in this part. Thanks for the continued support! :D

Author’s Note: Since I never actually mentioned it in the story, I just want to clarify that Max is a lawyer, and works in his dad’s firm.

Part 9

Isabel and Kyle stepped out onto the front porch and saw Max sitting on the bench by the front window. Isabel gave Kyle’s hand a squeeze and said, “I’ll call you tomorrow, okay?”

“’Kay. Night,” he said, leaving a quick kiss on her cheek. “See ya, Max,” he called out. Max nodded and gave a little wave, though Isabel noticed that they both seemed to be avoiding eye contact with one another. She shook her head and tried to stifle her laughter.

After Kyle was gone, Isabel went and sat down next to Max on the bench, greeting him with an awkward, “Hey.”

“Welcome home,” he said, his lips curving upward into an embarrassed smile. “So, you and Kyle, huh?”

“Yeah,” Isabel responded bashfully, looking down at her shoes.

“How long have you two… been… together?” Max asked.

“Not long. A couple of weeks, I guess,” Isabel replied with a shrug.

“I’m sorry about before,” he said, looking at her. “I should have waited for you to answer before just barging in.”

Isabel gave a little laugh and said, “It’s okay. Though that’s not exactly how I wanted you to find out about us. I figured I’d sit you down and tell you. You know, kinda how you told me that you and Liz weren’t together anymore?” She gave him a self-satisfied smirk.

“Did I forget to mention that?” he asked sheepishly, giving her a pitiful look.

Isabel smiled and gave him a playful shove, but then turned serious. “Why didn’t you ever tell me? My jaw nearly hit the floor when I got an invite to Liz’s wedding to Sean.”

“I’m sorry,” Max apologized. “It’s just… when you left, you seemed pretty eager to put Roswell behind you. I didn’t really want to bother you with insignificant things.”

Isabel opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. For the second time that night, she was rendered speechless. First Emma, and now Max. Had she really been so determined to turn her back on her past, that even her best friend and her own brother walked on eggshells when it came to talking about it?

“Max, how can you say that?” she asked when she finally found her voice. “A break up between you and Liz is not insignificant!” He gave her an apologetic look, and she asked, “What happened? I only got the Cliffnotes version from Kyle.”

Max sighed and said, “We just drifted apart. Just… after… Alex died, we’d already hurt each other too much. Damaged the trust and faith that used to be between us. We tried to make it work, we really did.”

Isabel placed a comforting hand on his knee at the sad tone of his voice. “I still love her,” he continued on, “and I probably always will. But all I ever wanted was for her to be happy. Sean makes her happy. He gets her in a way that I don’t think I ever did. And he’s a really good guy, despite what a lot of people think.”

“But how can you watch them get married?”

“Well, it’s not going to be a walk in the park, that’s for sure,” he said, giving her a sad smile. “But, really, I’m happy for them. And at least I still have Liz’s friendship… and that’s better than nothing at all.”

Isabel turned to look at him. “Well, what about you? Are you seeing anyone?”

“There’s a new paralegal at mine and Dad’s office. Her name’s Kristin. She’s made it pretty clear that’s she’s interested. And she’s nice… and smart. I don’t know, maybe I’ll ask her out.”

“You should,” Isabel told him, as she tried to wrap her head around how much things had changed in her absence. “What about Maria and Michael? And Tess?” she asked.

Max gave a small chuckle as he replied, “Maria and Michael’s on-again off-again relationship is currently on. They actually just moved into an apartment together in Albuquerque. Tess is still here in Roswell, but I don’t know. She seems so lost lately. She’s not happy. I worry about her.” He looked at Isabel and said, “You should call her while you’re in town. I know she’d love to hear from you.”

“Yeah, I’ll do that,” Isabel said with a nod.

“Izzie,” Diane interrupted, stepping out onto the porch. “You have a phone call. It’s Liz.”

“Liz?” Isabel questioned, taking the cordless phone from her mother. She turned a questioning gaze to Max, but he just shrugged. She put the phone to her ear and greeted, “Hello?”

“Isabel, hi!” Liz answered in a voice that Isabel could only describe as much too cheerful. “I heard you got into town today. How was your trip?”

“Um, it was good,” Isabel answered, still confused as to why Liz would be calling her. “Thanks.”

“I’m glad,” Liz said. “Listen, I was just calling because I wanted to invite you to the bridesmaids’ luncheon tomorrow.”

Isabel was taken aback by Liz’s kind offer, and didn’t know what to say. “Oh, Liz, I couldn’t,” Isabel responded. “I don’t want to intrude.”

“Don’t be silly! I’d love to see you and catch up before everything gets crazy on Saturday. And you can bring your friend. What’s her name, Emily?”

“Emma,” Isabel corrected.

“Yes, Emma! Please, tell her she’s welcome to come too. We’re meeting at the Tea Room at one o’clock. Please say you’ll come.”

Isabel hesitated, and glanced at Max for reasons unknown. He was gazing out into the front yard, seemingly uninterested in her telephone conversation. “Um, okay, sure,” Isabel finally agreed. “I’ll meet you there at one.”

“Great! See you then,” Liz responded.

Isabel ended the phone call and told Max, “She invited me to the bridesmaids’ luncheon tomorrow.”

“That was nice of her,” Max commented.

“Max, are you sure you’re okay with this?” Isabel asked. “This all feels so weird to me. Like I’m betraying you.”

“Isabel, I told you, I’m fine. You should see the girls and catch up.” Then he glanced at his watch and said, “Look, I have to run. I have some files I need to work on tonight. But I’ll come over for breakfast in the morning.”

“Okay,” Isabel replied, and they exchanged a brief hug. “Good night, Max.”

***

The next morning and afternoon seemed to fly by in a blur. Isabel started the day by having breakfast with her parents, Max, and Emma. It felt like old times being with her family, and Emma fit in like she’d been there all along. She was as charming as always, and Mr. and Mrs. Evans had taken an instant liking to her.

Isabel extended Liz’s invitation for Emma to join them at the bridesmaids’ luncheon, but Emma declined, saying that she didn’t want to intrude. She insisted that Isabel go ahead without her, and Max offered to keep Emma entertained while Isabel was gone, maybe show her around town. Isabel thought it was a little odd for Max to offer, but she didn’t say anything. Her suspicion that something was up with those two kept nagging at the back of her mind.

Isabel joined Liz and her wedding party for lunch at the Tea Room, and ended up having a very nice time. Nancy Parker and Amy DeLuca were also in attendance, as was Maria, who would, of course, be serving as Liz’s maid of honor. Two of Liz’s friends from college, Jessica Ponton and Ashley Harke, were the bridesmaids.

Liz was working as a high school science teacher in Albuquerque, and she and Isabel found that they both had some amusing stories from the high school environment. Maria and Michael, who were also living in Albuquerque, owned and operated a small bar and nightclub, where Maria would sometimes perform. Despite their constant bickering as a couple, they made an excellent business team.

Isabel confessed to Liz her shock at the impending nuptials, but Liz didn’t seem surprised. Apparently, that had been most people’s reaction after Sean popped the question, saying “he wasn’t the marrying type.” But Isabel could tell that Max was right – Liz was happy. And if Max could be okay with that, Isabel decided that she could too.

After the luncheon, Isabel bid farewell to everyone, wishing Liz good luck for the big day, and promising to see her at the reception. She made a quick call to Kyle from her cell phone, made plans for dinner, and then headed back to her parents’ house.

***

Back at the Evans’ home, Emma was perusing a bookshelf in Max’s old bedroom, noting the many classic pieces of literature. “You were a geek in high school, weren’t you?” she teased Max, who was lounging in the desk chair with his feet propped on the bed.

“Funny,” Max responded with an affable scowl.

Emma giggled, and the room fell silent as she continued to look at Max’s things, getting an idea of what he might have been like as a teenager. But something had been weighing at the back of her mind all day, so she decided to broach the subject.

“Max, I’ve been thinking,” Emma said, breaking the silence. “I think maybe we should tell Isabel the truth about us. I’m tired of lying to her.”

Max looked caught off guard by Emma’s request and sudden change in demeanor, and she continued on. “I think she’s starting to suspect that something’s up anyway. She found your number stored in my cell phone, and started asking questions.”

“What did you tell her?” Max asked.

“I gave her some lame story about you helping me pick out a birthday present for her. I don’t really think she believed me though.”

“I don’t know,” Max said warily. “It’s just going to upset her.”

“Max, she’s my best friend! I can’t stand this secret between us anymore. I don’t like her looking at me like she can’t trust me.”

“I know, I know. Do you think I like lying to my own sister? But if we tell her, she’s going to be hurt, and she’s going to be pissed,” Max said. “It’s going to hurt her that we kept something this big from her for so long.”

“It’s going to hurt her even more if she finds out on her own,” Emma pointed out. “She knows that something is up. Max, we have to tell her.”

When Max didn’t respond right away, she continued, “I told Aidan everything before I left to come here.”

Max’s mouth opened in an inaudible gasp. “Everything?” he asked, and Emma nodded.

“And don’t even try to tell me that I shouldn’t have,” she said before Max could lecture her. “He’s my husband, and he deserves to know.”

Pushing his concerns aside for the moment, Max laid a concerned hand on Emma’s arm and asked, “How did he take it?”

“Could have been better, could have been worse, I guess,” Emma replied. “He was upset at first, and more than a little freaked. It’ll take some time, but I think he’s gonna be okay. We’re going to talk more about it when I get back home.”

“I’m sorry,” Max replied sympathetically.

“More than anything, it was such a weight off my shoulders, Max,” Emma said, searching his face for some understanding. “Don’t you see why I really need to tell Isabel? I need her to know the truth.”

***

Just outside of the door, Isabel’s heart beat madly inside her chest at the conversation she’d just overheard between her brother and her best friend. Her mind was swirling with all sorts of scenarios, but only one was standing out. It couldn’t be… could it?

“Hey.”

Isabel nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard Kyle’s voice behind her. “God, you scared the crap out of me!” she scolded him in a whisper.

“What’s going on?” Kyle asked in a low voice. “Why are you whispering? And why are you lurking here in the hallway?”

Isabel grabbed Kyle by the arm and pulled him back toward the front of the house, and out the door to the porch. Looking perplexed, Kyle asked, “Iz, what is going on?”

Isabel took a deep breath of the fresh afternoon air and looked at Kyle with wide eyes. She spoke in a hushed voice, as if she was afraid someone might be listening.

“Kyle,” she said, “something’s going on with Max and Emma.”

“What do you mean?”

Isabel took another breath and said, “I think they might be having an affair.”

LOL! Isabel thinks they're having an affair, huh! Well, it will be interesting to see what comes up.

And poor Max again! :lol

Sorry for the delay, guys. In addition to this part, I was working on a new story, which I'll probably be posting tomorrow. Thanks for all the fb! :D

Erin, thanks! Let's see if any of your conclusions were the right one. ;)
Gerry, thanks for the fb as always! Hope you enjoy this part.

Author’s Note: Sorry to disappoint those of you who were hoping it was a set-up, but I’m afraid the Sean/Liz wedding is real. Can’t help it… I always had a soft spot for those two. ;) And drum roll please… it’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for! (Well, sort of. ;)) I know you’ll probably still have some questions after this part, but I promise they’ll all be answered in due time. Enjoy!

Part 10

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join this man and this woman in the bonds of holy matrimony.”

Isabel and Kyle watched from their seats in the center of the church as the minister presided over the nuptials of Liz Parker and Sean DeLuca. Liz looked radiant in her white dress and veil, and Sean looked happier than anyone had ever seen him. If Isabel had had any doubts, all it took was seeing them together to know that this was real. They were obviously very much in love.

She chanced a glance at Max, who was sitting on the other side of Emma, to see how he was holding up. His face held a stoic expression, so it was hard for Isabel to gauge how he was handling things. She would just check with him at the reception.

The ceremony was short and sweet, and soon everyone was headed to the country club across town for the wedding reception. A receiving line was set up at the entrance, and Isabel offered her congratulations to the newlyweds.

The next hour was a whirlwind of activity. Speeches were made by the wedding party, and the bride and groom danced their first dance together as husband and wife. Isabel chatted briefly with Maria and Michael, and she saw Tess, and they made plans to have lunch the next day before Isabel had to leave town on Monday. Isabel also saw numerous other people that she had known in high school, and she was soon exhausted.

“Tired?” Kyle asked her as he returned to their table after talking with some of his old co-workers from the sheriff’s office. He handed her a glass of punch.

“Thanks,” Isabel replied, taking the glass. “Yeah, who knew catching up with old friends could be so exhausting?”

“Too tired to dance?” Kyle asked with a smile.

Isabel couldn’t resist the look on his handsome face, and she took his proffered hand, following him to the dance floor. He pulled her close and she wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Are you glad you came?” Kyle asked into her ear.

“Yeah,” Isabel said. “I don’t know why…” she trailed off as her attention was distracted when she saw Emma pulling Max by his hand out to the patio.

“Why what?” Kyle asked her.

“What are they up to?” Isabel asked, more to herself than to Kyle.

“Who?” Kyle asked in confusion, following her gaze.

Isabel suddenly decided she’d had enough of secrets. She was going to find out what was going on. Right here, right now.

“Isabel, where are you going?” Kyle asked, following her off of the dance floor.

“I’m going to confront them.”

“What, right now?” Kyle asked. “Are you sure this is the best time?”

“Yes,” Isabel responded as she made a beeline for the patio, Kyle following close behind. She stepped out into the warm sunshine, and saw Max and Emma talking quietly in the corner.

She approached her brother and her best friend, and didn’t waste time with pleasantries. “Okay, I know something is going on with you two, and I want to know what it is.”

“What?” Emma asked, obviously caught off guard with Isabel’s abrupt confrontation.

“Are you having an affair? Is that what it is?”

Max looked taken aback and responded, “Isabel, you’re being paranoid.”

“Am I?” Isabel asked, glaring at her brother. “I don’t think I am. You two have been keeping something from me for God knows how long. I heard you talking in your room yesterday… something about not wanting to tell me because I would be pissed. Well, let me tell you something, Max. I’m already pissed.” Kyle hung back as Isabel continued her tirade. “So just tell me the truth… are you having an affair?”

“Isabel, would you listen to yourself?” Emma asked pleadingly. “We are not having an affair!”

“Then what is it? Just stop lying and tell me the truth. I know the whole birthday present story was a load of bull.”

Max and Emma exchanged a look, and Isabel crossed her arms over her chest. “Well?”

Max cleared his throat uncomfortably and lowered his voice, saying, “Isabel, Emma’s one of us.”

“Excuse me?”

“I’m an alien, Isabel,” Emma said, her eyes pleading with Isabel to understand. “Like you and Max and Michael and Tess.”

Isabel’s face paled and she stumbled backwards. Kyle caught her arm and held onto her for support, though his own heart was racing at Emma’s admission.

When Isabel didn’t say anything, Emma continued on, “My Antarian name is Serina. I’m a protector of the granilith.”

“I asked her to watch out for you in San Francisco,” Max admitted.

“I… I don’t believe you,” Isabel said, her voice wavering.

In response, Emma looked around the patio to make sure they were alone, then reached out to touch the boutonnière that was pinned to Kyle’s jacket, turning it from red to white.

Emma looked to Isabel for some sort of response, and when she got nothing, she said, “This doesn’t change anything, Iz.”

Isabel shook her head, tears welling up in her brown eyes. “This changes everything,” she said in a voice barely above a whisper, backing away.

“Isabel, please, let’s talk about this… let us explain,” Emma pleaded.

Isabel simply shook her head again. “I… can’t… I can’t do this…” she stuttered as she walked away.

When Max and Emma moved to follow her, Kyle put up a hand to stop them. “Leave her alone for now,” he said. “I’ll go talk to her.”

Kyle jogged back inside to catch up with Isabel, and he caught sight of her exiting the ballroom into the lobby. “Isabel!” he called out. “Isabel, wait!” He caught her by the arm and she turned face him, and he could tell that she was just barely holding it together, tears waiting to spill from her eyes at any minute.

“Where are you going?” he asked her.

“I don’t know. I just need to get out of here,” she said.

“Let me take you somewhere.”

“No, I just need be alone,” she said, heading for the exit.

“Isabel…”

“I’ll call you later,” she said without turning around.

She left Kyle standing alone in the lobby, feeling completely helpless.

***

Later that night, after the day’s celebrations were long over, Kyle lay in his bed staring up at the ceiling. It was well after midnight, but he couldn’t sleep a wink. He’d waited all evening in the hopes that maybe Isabel would call him or come by, but she hadn’t. He had debated going to see her, but figured she needed some time to think. He just hoped she’d come to him when she was ready.

He was interrupted from his musings when he heard the click of his bedroom door, and looked up to see a shadowy figure in the archway. Squinting his eyes, he questioned, “Dad?”

“No, it’s me,” he heard Isabel say, and he breathed a sigh of relief. “Did I wake you?”

“No, I couldn’t sleep. How’d you get in, anyway?”

“I used my powers,” she replied sheepishly. She entered the room, closing the door behind her. Without turning on any lights, she quietly padded across the room, lifting the covers and climbing into the bed with Kyle. He didn’t ask her where she’d been or what she’d been doing, just shifted his body to give her space, wrapping an arm around her and pulling her close.

“You okay?” he asked softly.

Isabel wordlessly shook her head.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

She shook her head again.

“’Cause you know I’m here for you, right?”

“I know,” she whispered, tracing an invisible pattern on his bare chest with her forefinger.

They lay in the silent darkness for long moments, both lost in their thoughts. Kyle rubbed his hand in a soothing motion up and down Isabel’s arm, and Isabel continued her ministrations on his chest. Her hand soon joined her finger as she lightly caressed his chest, and Kyle’s breathing became quicker as his body reacted to her touch. Isabel must have felt the change too, because she ran her hand up his chest to cup his cheek, pulling his face to hers in a sweet kiss.

He pulled her body tighter against his as she deepened the kiss, their tongues gently stroking each other. Hands roamed their bodies… touching, caressing… and soon Isabel was pulling her shirt from her body. Kyle was momentarily awestruck at the sight of her perfect breasts covered by a pale pink bra. Instinct quickly took over, however, as he gently caressed her flesh, eliciting a moan from Isabel. She arched her body up into his, no doubt feeling the effect that their make-out session was having on his body.

Kyle reverently released the front clasp of Isabel’s bra and removed the garment, drinking in the sight of her beautiful body. He kissed her softly on her lips, trailing his kisses down until his lips made contact with a pert nipple. Isabel gasped at the first feel of Kyle’s tongue on her body, bringing her hands up to tangle in his hair.

“Kyle, do you have anything?” Isabel asked breathlessly.

“Hm?” Kyle mumbled against her breast.

“Protection,” she clarified.

Kyle broke free of his cloud of lust to look up into Isabel’s face. For the first time since she’d shown up in his bedroom, the moonlight cast a soft glow on her face, and he noticed that her eyes were red-rimmed. She’d been crying.

“Oh, god, Iz. We can’t do this,” he said, pushing a strand of hair away from her face.

“What?”

He gave her a sad smile and said, “When we do… have sex… it should be because we both really want it.”

“Don’t you want to?” Isabel asked, sounding self-conscious.

“Of course I want to!” Kyle responded quickly, realizing what his remark must have sounded like. “You have no idea how bad I want to. But right now, you’re upset over this thing with Max and Emma… and you’re vulnerable… and when we do take that step, I want it to be about us… only us.”

“God, you’re right,” Isabel mumbled, covering her face with her hands. “Oh, I’m so embarrassed.” She looked into Kyle’s face and said, “I’m sorry.”

“Hey, don’t be embarrassed or sorry. It’s not everyday I have a gorgeous, half-naked woman in my bed,” he said playfully.

Isabel gave a half-hearted laugh and reached up to place her hand on Kyle’s cheek. “Thank you,” she said sincerely. “Most guys would have taken advantage of the situation.”

“Well, I’m not most guys.”

“I know,” she replied softly, placing a chaste kiss on his lips. Looking into his eyes again, she asked, “Could you just hold me?”

In answer, he wrapped his arms tightly around her, and she rested her head on his chest. Placing a kiss to her forehead, he responded, “’Til you tell me to let go.”

Lovely updates! Sorry I missed one, but now that I'm better I shall try not to make a habit of it.

Interesting turn of events, for a while I was wondering if perhaps Max had healed her life.

Obviously Adian is a good man, so she should be fine.

I just hope Emma's friendship with Isabel is able to be recovered, especially if there is any doubt there that the friendship was genuine and not just something Max forced Emma to do.

Can't wait for the next part!

Oh, and Kyle...sighs...what a good man.

Great part, Jenny! It looks like Isabel and Emma do have a fence to mend. But I suspect that they will find a way. :D And I loved Kyle's thoughtfulness... and wit...

Part 11

When Kyle awoke on Sunday morning, he was alone in his bed. Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he looked around the room, but there was no sign of Isabel. The digital clock on the nightstand read 9:30 am.

Kyle stumbled sleepily out of the bed and into the living room, wondering where Isabel could have gone. He must have been sleeping pretty heavily if she’d left without waking him. There was a note on the coffee table, but it was just from his dad.

Kyle,

I’m out running some errands. I took my squad car, so the keys to my Jeep are by the back door if you need to go anywhere. See you for dinner tonight.

Dad

Going back to his bedroom, Kyle found his cell phone and dialed Isabel’s number. After four rings, her voice mail picked up and Kyle ended the call. He ran a hand nervously through his hair, feeling concerned for Isabel. Then he told himself that he was being ridiculous. Isabel was a grown woman and could more than take care of herself. Regardless, he dialed the number to the Evans’ home.

“Hello?” a gentle female voice answered after two rings.

“Mrs. Evans? Hi, it’s Kyle.”

“Oh, hello, Kyle,” she greeted.

“Is Isabel around?” he asked.

“No, she’s not here. I thought she was with you.”

“She was,” Kyle said. “But she must have left early this morning. Any idea where she might have gone?”

“I’m sorry, dear,” Diane replied. “I don’t know what her plans were for today.”

In the background, Kyle could hear Emma asking, “Is that Kyle?” and the sounds were muffled as Diane must have covered the receiver.

Coming back to the phone, Diane said, “Kyle, Emma wants to talk to you. Here she is.”

There were more muffled sounds as the phone was handed off, and Emma’s anxious voice came over the line. “Kyle?”

“Hey, Emma.”

“Where’s Iz? She didn’t come home last night.”

“I know,” Kyle said. “She stayed with me at Dad’s house. But when I woke up this morning, she was gone.”

“Kyle, you have to know that I didn’t mean for things to turn out this way,” Emma told him, as if she had to convince him as well as Isabel. “I’ve wanted to tell her for so long…”

“It’s okay, Em,” Kyle said. “You don’t have to explain yourself to me.”

“I didn’t want her to find out this way,” Emma carried on, her voice breaking, as if she might start crying at any moment. Kyle really hoped she wouldn’t. He could handle an upset Isabel, but he wasn’t so sure if he could handle an upset Emma.

“She’s my best friend – I can’t lose her.”

“Hey, you’re not going to lose her,” Kyle said, trying his best to console Emma. “She just needs some time.”

“I’ve tried calling her and all I get is her voice mail. Same for Max.” Emma paused and then said, “I know she thinks that I’ve only been pretending to be her friend all this time. God, that’s what I’d think if I were in her shoes. But it’s not like that. Kyle, you have to get her to talk to me. She listens to you,” Emma pleaded.

“First I have to find her,” Kyle mumbled.

“I think she has lunch plans with Tess today. Maybe Tess has heard from her.”

“All right, I’ll try that.”

“You’ll let me know if you find her, won’t you?” Emma asked, almost as if she was afraid Kyle wouldn’t.

“Yeah, I’ll call you.”

“Thanks, Kyle.”

They said their goodbyes and Kyle ended the call, scrolling through the directory to find Tess’ number. She answered after the third ring. “Hey, Kyle, what’s up?” she asked.

“Hey, Tess. Have you heard from Isabel today?”

“No,” Tess answered, “but I’m supposed to meet her for lunch at noon. Why?”

Kyle didn’t want to worry Tess, so he simply said, “I just haven’t seen her this morning and was wondering where she was.”

“Kyle, is everything all right?” Tess asked with concern, and Kyle wasn’t at all surprised that she could see right through his nonchalance. Even though he and Tess weren’t as close as they used to be, they’d always had a special bond. Of course she’d be able to sense that something was amiss.

Kyle didn’t know if Tess knew about Emma and everything that had gone down, and if she didn’t, it wasn’t his place to tell. So he gave her an extremely abridged version of the truth. “She and Max had a fight yesterday, and she took it pretty hard,” he told her. “Just… when you see her at lunch, would you tell her to call me?”

“Of course,” Tess said.

“Thanks, Tess. Bye.”

Next Kyle called Michael, who hadn’t seen Isabel since the wedding reception the previous day, and neither had Maria. He debated calling Liz, but figured she’d be getting ready to leave for the honeymoon, so of course she wouldn’t have seen Isabel. He called the Crashdown… no one there had seen her either.

Kyle tossed his phone onto the bed in frustration. “Damnit, Isabel,” he muttered under his breath. His rational side told him that she was perfectly safe, and was probably just off somewhere blowing off steam. Logically, he knew she wasn’t in any kind of danger. She was more than capable of taking care of herself, and it’s not like they’d really even had any dangers to be concerned about for years now.

More than anything, Kyle was just disappointed. Disappointed that Isabel wouldn’t lean on him in her time of need. She wouldn’t talk to him last night about what had happened, all too eager to get lost in the sensations of their physical closeness. Which Kyle enjoyed, obviously, but he wanted to be so much more for her.

Kyle didn’t want to push Isabel to talk about it if she wasn’t ready, but it wasn’t good to keep everything bottled up inside. If she was going to continue to refuse to talk this out with Max and Emma, then she could at least talk to someone. And Kyle wanted to be that someone. They’d gotten so close since he’d moved to San Francisco – getting to know each other better, sharing secrets, bonding with each other – and it hurt him to know that she was shutting him out when she needed him the most.

But then that had always been Isabel’s problem. She was never willing to let anyone in… never let anyone help her through the tough times. Running away seemed to be her response when things got too difficult to deal with. Isn’t that how she ended up so far from home in the first place?

But she couldn’t very well continue to run from this. Max was her brother and Emma was her best friend. And even though Kyle knew that Isabel felt hurt and betrayed, she was going to have to deal with this… the sooner the better. Kyle believed Emma when she said that she didn’t mean to hurt Isabel, and he was even going to give Max the benefit of the doubt and assume that he didn’t plan things to turn out this way either. If the three of them would just sit down and talk, maybe they could work everything out.

Why couldn’t Isabel learn to lean on the people who loved her? Granted, two of those people were the cause of the problem, but that didn’t mean that Isabel was alone. When would she learn that life’s problems were easier to bear when you had someone to help share the burden?

Unexpectedly, a thought occurred to Kyle. He didn’t know why he hadn’t thought of it before. Throwing on some jeans and a t-shirt and stuffing his wallet and cell phone into his pocket, he grabbed the keys to the Jeep and headed for the front door, stepping outside into the warm sunshine.

Suddenly Kyle knew exactly where he would find her.

where? where?

Kyle has a point, Isabel does have this history of running and shutting others out when things are really difficult. He needs to break though and in some ways, he already has because she came to him for comfort when she needed him. Now, to move into the ablility to discuss the problem....

Small steps Buddha Boy, but important ones.

And yes, Emma is right, Isabel no doubt feels as if everything is a farce, it's completely understandable when you find out the reason she was in San Fran and her secret id afterall.

Bring on the confrontations!

Thank you, my darlings! And thanks to everyone who came by the Author's Chat last week. I was truly overwhelmed. :D

Lisa, thanks for the great fb, as always. Hope you enjoy the next part.
Gerry, you'll find out right about now. ;)

Part 12

Isabel stepped lightly across the well-manicured grass of the Roswell cemetery, coming to a stop when she reached her destination. She dropped to her knees in front of the headstone and ran her fingers reverently along the engraved letters, tears springing into her eyes almost immediately.

ALEXANDER C. WHITMAN
JUNE 21, 1983 – APRIL 29, 2001
BELOVED SON AND FRIEND
May your song always be sung

“Hey, Alex,” she said in a voice barely above a whisper, placing the small bouquet of flowers that she had brought next to his headstone. “Sorry I haven’t been by to visit in a while. Things have been… well, you know.”

She sat next to his grave in silence for several long moments, a gentle spring breeze blowing around her, almost like a tender caress. Feeling ashamed of herself, she couldn’t even remember the last time she’d been here. It had been a couple of years at least. There were some other bouquets of flowers at the grave, probably left by Liz or Maria or Alex’s parents… people who visited on a regular basis.

“It’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up over it.”

Isabel glanced to her right, where Alex sat cross-legged next to her. He was looking at the headstone curiously, looking as young and handsome as the last time she’d seen him.

“Over what?” she asked him.

“That you don’t come visit much. It’s okay. I know you have your own life now,” he responded, and Isabel gave him a sad smile.

“So did you come here to talk or are we just going to sit in silence? Tell Dr. Alex what’s on your mind.”

Isabel sighed and settled herself into a more comfortable position. “Two of the most important people in my life have betrayed me. How could they have lied to me all this time?”

Alex gave no answer to her rhetorical question, so she continued to voice aloud the thoughts that had been running rampant in her mind for the last 24 hours. “First, there’s Max. All that stuff he said to me when I left Roswell – about how he trusted me and respected my decisions – it was all complete bull! He was only letting me go because he’d found someone else to keep tabs on me.”

Isabel paused, looking up at the sky. “And Emma… it’s like our entire friendship has been a lie. She’s just been pretending all these years.”

“Now, you don’t really believe that,” Alex said.

“How do I know?” Isabel asked, not really expecting an answer. “She only became my friend out of some loyalty to Max… the almighty king,” she added with disdain.

“Maybe that’s how it started,” Alex said with sympathy. “But do you really think you two would have become as close as you did if she was just pretending? She could have just watched you from afar… never even letting you know she was there. Think about all the good times you’ve had together. All the things you’ve shared. Can you really doubt that any of that was real?”

Isabel sat thoughtfully for moment, thinking about what Alex was saying. “Even so,” she said, “that doesn’t excuse lying to me for ten years.”

“Well, ask yourself this,” Alex said. “If you had known from the beginning who Emma was and that Max sent her, what would you have done? You would have pushed her away,” Alex said, without waiting for Isabel to answer. “And then you would have missed out on ten years of friendship.”

Isabel folded her arms across her chest. She knew Alex was right. He was always right.

“And you know that Max only did this because he cares about you. I’m not saying that makes it right, but you know that he loves you, and he would never do anything to intentionally upset you.”

“It just hurts, Alex,” Isabel said after a moment. “You know… you know how hard it is for me to let people in. There aren’t many people in this world that I can truly count on, and when two of those people…” she trailed off, her voice catching in her throat. “It just hurts.”

“I know,” Alex said in a soft voice, wrapping a comforting arm around Isabel’s shoulders. “Just talk to them, Iz. Tell them how you’re feeling, and let them explain themselves. I promise that everything will work out in the end.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Trust me. Have I ever let you down?”

Isabel smiled as she leaned her head on his shoulder. “Never,” she whispered.

***

Several yards behind her, Kyle quietly crept away without alerting Isabel to his presence. He wasn’t sure what to think about what he’d just witnessed. Isabel, talking to Alex – er, herself – as if he was right there with her.

What did this mean? What did it mean that Isabel wouldn’t confide her fears and her pain with him, but rather with someone who wasn’t even really there?

He knew that Isabel and Alex had always shared a special bond, and he respected that. He knew that Isabel loved Alex, and how difficult it was for her after he died. He would never hope to take Alex’s place in her heart, but what if there wasn’t any room left in there for him? He had no doubts that he was falling hard for Isabel, but what if he was just setting himself up to get hurt?

Kyle inwardly kicked himself. You selfish dumbass, he chided himself. Isabel’s going through some tough stuff, and all you’re worried about is that she won’t love you as much as her ex-boyfriend. Nice, Valenti, real nice.

But as Kyle walked dejectedly down the sidewalk, he couldn’t help his feelings of concern. He was so wrapped up in his thoughts that the next thing he knew, he was in front of the Crashdown and running into – quite literally – Tess.

“Oh! Sorry, Kyle,” Tess said.

“My bad,” Kyle responded. “I wasn’t even looking where I was going.”

“Did you find Isabel?” Tess asked him, readjusting her handbag on her shoulder.

“Yeah, I found her.”

“Then why the long face?” Tess asked. She gestured to one of the outdoor tables, and they both sat down.

“She’s at Alex’s grave,” Kyle said, running his hands over his face.

“Okay,” Tess said, obviously confused by Kyle’s demeanor.

“She was… she was talking to him.”

“Yeah, so?” Tess asked. “People talk at graves all the time. I don’t understand it myself, but humans seem to find it comforting,” she said with a chuckle, hoping to get a smile out of Kyle.

He rewarded her with a little half-smile and said, “It’s just… she was sitting there confiding in this invisible person about how upset she was… but she won’t talk to me about it. Why won’t she talk to me?”

“Maybe it’s just easier for her to talk to someone who can’t talk back,” Tess suggested.

“But that’s the weird part. I think… I think she thinks he was talking back to her. It was like she was having a conversation with someone.”

“Is that what’s bothering you? That she’s talking to invisible people?”

“No,” Kyle grumbled, looking down at the table.

“Kyle?” Tess reached out and lifted his chin, urging him to look at her. “Are you in love with Isabel?”

“I don’t know… maybe…” He paused for a moment. “Yeah… yeah, I am. I know it’s crazy, because we’ve only really been together for a couple of weeks… but yeah, I think I am.”

“And you’re afraid that she still has feelings for Alex,” Tess said, as if she was reading his mind.

Kyle nodded glumly.

“I think you’re worrying over nothing,” Tess said, placing a sympathetic hand over his. “I’ve seen the way Isabel looks at you. She’s crazy about you.”

Kyle looked at her doubtfully, and she carried on. “Just talk to her, Kyle. Be open and honest. Let her know that you’re there for her. Good relationships are always built on communication.”

Kyle raised an eyebrow at her. “When did you get so smart about relationships?” he joked.

“Yeah, well, I know I don’t have much experience,” she said with a roll of her eyes, “but I do know some things.”

Kyle could sense an underlying sadness in her words, and inwardly kicked himself for the second time that morning. “God, Tess, I’ve been so wrapped up in myself that I haven’t even asked how you’ve been doing. How are things?”

“Same old, same old,” Tess responded dolefully. “Nothing to tell, really.”

Kyle squeezed Tess’ hand and said, “I know we’ve kind of drifted over the last few years, but you’ve always been a good friend to me, Tess. Thanks.”

“You’ve been a good friend to me, too. I’ve missed you.”

“You know you’re welcome in Frisco anytime, right?” he said to her.

“Thanks,” Tess said with a small smile, squeezing his hand in return. “That really means a lot.”

***

“I’m sorry to drag you into my messy life again,” Isabel apologized to Alex.

Alex just smiled at her and said, “Before you and I had our time taken away… before we gave loving each other a go… we were friends. And that’s what we’ll always be.”

“Thanks, Alex.”

“And don’t let this whole thing make you afraid to open your heart to people,” Alex continued on. “Especially a certain someone.”

Isabel knew exactly who Alex was talking about and, with a pang, realized that she hadn’t been very considerate of Kyle’s feelings the last couple of days. “Kyle’s been so good to me,” she murmured thoughtfully. “And I’ve taken him for granted.”

“Let him help you, Isabel. You know he wants to be there for you. Lean on him. Trust him,” Alex said. “He cares very deeply for you, and I know you care for him. Don’t be afraid to feel.”

“Thank you, Alex,” Isabel said again. “Thank you for always knowing the right thing to say.”

“Everything I’ve said, you already know,” Alex said with a meaningful smile. “You just needed to hear it.”

LMAO! I soooo should have thought of that!

Of course! Alex! *sniff* My dear sweet boy...

Kyle's reaction to her "seeing dead people" was so true! Who wouldn't think she was kind of out of it while at the same time feel slightly jealous?

Gosh, those two need to talk. I know Isabel gains great comfort from her memory of Alex (and her relationship with him even beyond death), but now she has a living breathing person who is willing to wrap her in his big, strong, handsome...sexy arms....yeah, all innocent like

She needs to let go...speak out on all of the hurt that has kept her drifting for years and let her heart heal and love again. There is so much potential here for her to be happy.

Thanks for the update!

Okay, I should have guessed she'd be there! I loved the conversation with Alex! And poor Kyle, seeing Isabel carrying on a conversation like that and wondering where it leaves him. But Tess was right. It isn't really unusual... except maybe for the answering back part. Hehe!

Great part, Jenny! :heart :heart :heart :thumbsup

All right, has anyone seen my muse? Because she seems to be MIA.

Seriously though, Part 13 is about halfway done, and I hope to have it finished, beta'd, and posted within the week. And I've got the rest of this story outlined, it's just a matter of putting pen to paper. So the muse better cooperate. ;)

Thanks for your patience guys! :D

Thanks for your patience, guys! :)

Lisa, thanks for the great fb as always! I always enjoy reading your thoughts.
Gerry, thanks! Hope you enjoy the update.

Author’s Note: Okay. First, my sincere apologies for taking so long with an update. The muse was not cooperating. Secondly, one of my problems from the beginning of this fic was that I really had no idea what to do with Tess. I wanted to use her in some way, but I just didn’t know how. And now I’m afraid that my attempt at using her in this story has failed miserably. So that’s what this part is – my feeble attempt at incorporating Tess into the plotline. Hopefully it’s better than I think it is, but in case it’s not, I wanted to apologize in advance if it seems flimsy. I think my creative juices will flow a little better with the next parts. ;)

Part 13

As Isabel waited for Tess to arrive for their lunch date, she gently massaged her temples with the tips of her fingers. She didn’t exactly have a headache – because, fortunately, aliens didn’t seem to get headaches – but all the stress of the weekend was definitely getting to her.

After leaving the cemetery, she’d had no other choice but to go back to her parents’ house since that’s where all of her things were. She was hoping to be able to just sneak in and take a shower and sneak back out, but that wasn’t her luck. Max and Emma, who insisted that they all needed to talk, had immediately bombarded her.

Isabel had simply blown them off. Despite her earlier discussion with Alex, she just wasn’t ready to talk to them yet. She knew she needed to, but she just needed some more time to collect herself before she could have a rational conversation with either of them.

So she’d barricaded herself in her bedroom until she left to meet Tess for lunch. Maybe having a carefree afternoon with an old friend would help take her mind off things for a while.

Isabel smiled and waved when she saw Tess’ familiar face coming in her direction. Tess smiled back, but Isabel noticed that it didn’t quite reach her eyes. She remembered what Max had said on her first night back in town about Tess being unhappy, and Isabel wondered what could be causing her friend’s distress.

She and Tess had never been extraordinarily close, but they did share a special bond and kinship with one another… being the only two female hybrids and all. But Isabel had always regretted they they’d never formed a closer bond simply as friends. Maybe it wasn’t too late to fix that.

Isabel and Tess settled themselves at the table after greeting each other, and a flirtatious young waiter came to take their order. Isabel bit back a smile of amusement as she wondered if all wait staff were required to flirt with their customers.

She and Tess chatted idly as they waited for their food to arrive. Isabel talked about her job and life in San Francisco, and Tess told Isabel about her job as an assistant manager in a trendy boutique, as well as filled her in on some town gossip. They briefly reminisced about their younger days and marveled at the fact that there hadn’t been any alien chaos in nearly a decade – a fact that both of them were very thankful for.

Thinking about Emma, Isabel asked Tess, “Do you ever wonder if there are more of us out there?” Isabel had no idea if Tess knew about Emma, so she tried to gauge her reaction to the question.

Tess simply looked thoughtful and responded, “Yeah, sometimes. Sometimes the urge to find out is really overwhelming. But then there’s the fear that if there are more out there, they’re the enemy. So I try not to think about it so much. I mean, this is my life now,” she said, the forlorn look appearing in her eyes again. “What about you?” she asked Isabel.

“Not until recently,” Isabel muttered in a low voice, and Tess looked at her quizzically. Isabel guessed from her look that she didn’t know about Emma, and with a shake of her head, she said, “Never mind.”

Seeming to understand Isabel’s reluctance to explain, Tess skillfully changed the subject. “You know, I really envy you.”

Isabel looked at her in surprise. “Why?”

“Because you got out of here, and you’ve made this great life for yourself. I just… I feel like I’m stuck. All my life, all I wanted was to get back home. That was always the goal. But now that I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the fact that that’s never going to happen, it’s like… what else is there?”

Isabel placed a sympathetic hand over Tess’ and said, “Tess, I’m sorry. I had no idea you were so unhappy.”

“It’s not that I’m unhappy, per say. It’s just… I didn’t sign up for this, you know?”

Isabel gave Tess a pensive look and asked, “So, what’s keeping you here?”

Tess looked caught off guard by Isabel’s question, and for a moment, she didn’t answer. “I don’t know. I guess I never really thought about it.”

“You say you envy me for getting out of here, so what’s stopping you from doing the same thing?”

Tess suddenly looked as though she’d had an epiphany. Giving Isabel a hint of a smile, she said, “You’re so right. I don’t know why it never occurred to me. I mean, I know why I stuck around at first,” she said sheepishly, “but things have changed. Maybe it’s time I accepted those changes and moved on.”

“And don’t let Max and Michael talk you out of it,” Isabel warned. “Let them know that you’re a big girl and can take care of yourself.”

Tess sensed the bitterness in Isabel’s voice and guessed that that was what she and Max must have fought about. Isabel didn’t volunteer any more information, so Tess said thoughtfully, “God. Where would I even go?”

“You could always come to California. There are plenty of job opportunities, and I have a spare bedroom that you’re more than welcome to use.”

“Thanks for the offer,” Tess said with a smile, “and maybe I’ll take you up on it one day, but I think maybe I need to try things on my own first. See what’s out there.”

“Well, you know you’re welcome anytime,” Isabel told her.

With a slight chuckle, Tess said, “Kyle said the exact same thing.”

“You talked to Kyle?” Isabel asked.

“Yeah, I ran into him this morning,” Tess said. “He was looking for you.”

Isabel’s eyes dropped guiltily to the surface of the table. “I took off on him this morning, without so much as a note. I guess he was pretty upset, huh?”

“A little,” Tess responded, her lips curving upward in a compassionate smile, “but probably not for the reasons you think.”

When Isabel cocked her head to the side curiously, Tess asked, “Can I give you some advice?” and Isabel gave a barely perceptible nod. “Don’t let Kyle slip away. I don’t really know what’s going on, and it’s not my business anyway, but just… hold on to him with everything you’ve got, Isabel.”

Tess paused, and Isabel realized with a pang that maybe Tess had more than one reason to be envious of her. She remembered how close Kyle and Tess had been back in high school when Tess was living with the Valentis.

“I’m happy for you and Kyle and what you’ve found together,” Tess told Isabel. “But I can’t deny that one of the biggest regrets in my life is that things never worked out for us. He’s a great guy, Iz. You’re lucky.”

Isabel smiled sadly at her friend as she let her words sink in. Tess was absolutely right. Isabel knew she needed to find Kyle and fix the mess she’d made before it got worse.

Before it was too late.

You know, I think Tess worked out well...because she put some things into perspective for Isabel that others wouldn't have been able to do (particularly since she's pushing everyone else away right now). There are are lot of conversations that need to be hammered out here...especially if Max has kept Emma a secret from everyone (lord help him if that's true when Michael fiinds out).

Keep the muse inspired!
