warm
***
Max walked down the sewers. She had done it so many times that she had learned to ignore the smells. Today was no different. As she walked the sewer bottoms again, the smell was the last thing on her mind.
She was too busy trying to find out what she was going to tell Logan. She
felt like she was drifting away from him; she had felt like this since
she had moved into Terminal City. When she had lived there and he lived somewhere else, away from her.
There were so many other reasons going through her head as she
crawled up to the street. The fact was she had never realized it before Alec had mentioned it the day before. How many times had she actually been close to Logan? She had mentioned the virus to Alec, he shook his head and
then asked, How many times has she felt close to him emotionally? She had
just waved her hand and told him to mind his own business. But the truth was she had only been emotionally close to Logan two times.
Two times in two years, and it hurt to think about them. The night of their second kiss, Max had detected for the first time, just how frustrated Logan had been about not being able to walk. She had never seen him like that. It was the first time she felt like she saw the real Logan.
The second time that she noticed closeness with Logan had been during the few minutes they had together, when the virus was out of order.
She walked up the stairs to his apartment, having never realized before just how many steps it was up to his place. She started to count the steps, as she walked this time. And with every step she took, Max remembered how they had used to be, back before her unplanned visit to Manticore. How much she wanted to forget happier times, because remembering happy times, easy times, hurt too much. Not that it was ever easy, Max thought to herself, as she walked on.
The more she thought about it, the more she remembered the distance between them. Whenever she tried to get closer to Logan, Max knew, he had pushed her away. And when he wanted to get closer, she had
pushed him away. And in the end they were always at the point where
they had started.
She knocked on his door and for a short second she wanted to run down
the stairs and never go back to his place.
Someone walked over to the door and two long seconds later the door opened, slowly.
“Max!” Logan greeted her and let her in. She walked in carefully,
looking at how messed up his new place looked. The computers were old, his
couch looked uncomfortable, and the walls were painted in a dark brown
color.
“Hey,” she said and followed him into the living room.
“Do you want something to eat?” he asked, and walked over to an old
refrigerator that had seen better days. She shook her head, and tried to
find the words to start the conversation.
“Logan,” she said. He looked at her curiously and waited for her to continue.
“I think we should talk.” She didn’t know what else to say. And
for a second it felt like her vocabulary flew out the window.
“Okay,” he said, hesitating. She looked down at her hands and then up at
Logan again.
“I can’t do this anymore,” she said, and looked away. He didn’t say anything, he just looked at her confused, not sure what she meant. They stood there in an uncomfortable silence. While she looked out the window, he looked at her.
“Okay you can’t do what anymore?” he sighed.
“This,” she pointed at him and then herself. “Us,” she continued.
She looked up at Logan again. She saw surprise, hurt, and finally a shade of cold in his eyes. She could she the real Logan by his emotions on his face. He had never been good at hiding them.
“Why?” he asked coldly, walking towards her. “Don’t tell me it’s the
virus,” he said, almost amused.
“It’s not the virus. It’s just too hard,” she answered, sadly and walked toward the door, being careful not to touch him as she passed him.
She could feel the tears filling her eyes, and she quickly dried them away. She hadn’t thought it would hurt. Not like that. She walked out the door, not looking back at Logan.
“What’s too hard?” he asked before she closed the door.
“Feeling like we’re slipping away from each other; walking on glass
around each other,” and with that she closed the door.

Alec walked into Max’s office; he was surprised to find her sleeping on
an old couch that was standing in the corner. He started to look for a
pen, trying not to wake her up. He knocked down a book. Just great, he
thought and looked over at Max sleeping body. She moved and opened her eyes.
“Alec,” she said sleepy.
“I know knock before you come in yadada,” he said bored. He looked at
her. Her eyes were puffy.
“Are you okay,” he asked concerned. He walked over to her and sat down
on his knees.
“I broke up with Logan,” Max almost whispered.
“Why?” he tried to hide the surprise in his voice.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” he could barely hear what she said. He
nodded his head and kissed her on the top of her head.
He started to walk over to the door, and Max sat up.
“Can you stay, for a while?” She asked. Alec closed the door behind him and walked back to Max.
And here I rest where disappointment and regret collide
Lying awake at night

great story. so someone finally called it quits on the whole l/m thing. cause they were going around like so many couples we all know and love or hate or love to hate. interesting a conversation with alec prompted it.
i would love to see somemore. i mean that cold look in logan's eye could bring all sorts of drama. and alec and max alone now that she broke up with logan...i'm sensing more drama. and wasn't alex with that girl that wanted to be with logan. tons of drama.

This does just seem to beg for a sequel, in which Max and Alec "find" each other now that Logan is out of the picture. Cool fic! I loved Dark Angel. It was one of my favorite shows. But when I read Dark Angel fanfics I have to rearrange my thinking, because Max and Alec makes me think Max and Alex from Roswell.
Once I'm into the story, though, that resolves itself.
Loved it!
