Summary: Tag line to departure. What happened at the Valenti household? What was Tess thinking as she blast off from earth?
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Valenti Household Fic
Spoilers: Through Departure.
Tess watched as earth got smaller and smaller. She placed her hand over her stomach. How did things get so messed up? That night I got everything I wanted. She shook her head sending blond curls out of her face. Alone in a ship hurtling through space to meet what would probably be her doom and she still couldn’t be honest with her self? No. I got everything that night I thought I wanted. In reality I lost the only thing I ever needed that night.
Kyle didn’t know whether to throw something, hit something, or cry. It felt like he had been standing in the door for hours. He couldn’t bring himself to cross the threshold. It would make it all that much more real. Kyle turned and glanced at the couch. I can’t sleep there either. Either way she wins. Either way she gets what she wants. Slamming his fist against the wall he sighed. Why am I never enough? Heck maybe it’s a Valenti curse. Valenti men are never enough. We can never keep our women. Sighing again he slowly sank to the floor in the threshold. He placed his head back against the inside frame of the door and placed one foot on either side. I’ll stay here and sleep. It’ll be like limbo. I will not lie to myself now. My going to sleep on the couch will have nothing to do with Alex’s memory in this room. It is about my deep-seated desire for her to come back. Just thinking it made him nauseous. It felt like the ultimate betrayal to someone he thought of as his best friend. While going in and throwing everything out in the room and taking it back for his own felt like the ultimate betrayal of the girl he loved.
She was surrounded by darkness. Looking out the granolith’s windows all she could see were specks of lights – stars – like pin pricks in fabric. It filled the window and expanded as far as the eye could see. Tess turned and glanced at the crystal and the panel beyond it. She still had six hours to go. Six hours to think and wander. Six hours to play the ‘what if’ game. A quarter of a day. She had six hours to think about all she had done and why she had even bothered to do it. I should have stopped a long time ago. Before Alex got involved. When Alex started to show signs of hurting. When I realized I was in love with Kyle. But she couldn’t go back now. She was on a course. Had been since the day she hatched. There was no room for love. It was never about love. Tess stifled a yarn. She was tired. And not from staying up late to ready to leave. She was weary, tired from it all. From the choices she made and would have to continue to make.
Jim Valenti could have written the book on tired. He had just finished ‘fixing’ everything so there would be unanswerable questions. He knew when he found aliens really did exist nothing would ever be normal. He was prepared for and even welcomed it. Someone it made him feel closer to his dad. Not tonight and not this past week. He could handle anything. Anything alien related. When Alex was killed and they thought it was suicide it was too ‘normal’. And he did not do ‘normal anymore. Next Tess getting pregnant by ‘think and ask questions first’ ‘I am so in love with Liz’ Max. Way to normal for him. Now finding out Tess killed Alex after having him decode the book that would get them home and there was a deal to have all killed. Well that was a bit Jerry Springerish meets the soaps with a bit of Dallas thrown in. I always felt my life was a weird storyline to some sci-fi show but even this is getting ridiculous. After Amy and me fizzled, I still had Tess. She completed our family in a way that had been missing since Kyle’s mom walked out. Even Kyle and me have been spending more time together. But this set everything back. I feel horrible. Yet if she ever came back, I know I would help her. She’s my daughter. Or at least the closest thing to one I had. And poor Kyle. It took him years to get over his mom. Months to get over Liz…and I’m not sure if he’s finally solved those problems. He scrubbed a hand over his face and realized all the lights were out. Kyle must have gone to bed. He quietly entered his home so we he couldn’t wake him up. He saw Kyle wasn’t sleep on the couch. As he made his way to the back he saw this figured slumped in the doorway of the bedroom. It was Kyle. Somehow he managed to fall asleep while in the threshold and from the way he was sleeping it looked planned. Jim thought about waking him but thought better of it. This was one more thing his son was going to have to work through. They all were. And tonight he was in no condition to help him deal with the fact that someone else he loved was gone.
Two more hours to go. Tess thought back to the last real conversation she had with Kyle. She wandered if he would remember. She hoped for his sake he didn’t. Kyle Valenti did not love Tess Harding as a sister. She hoped he would never remember the exchange of words they had. Tess I love you. I love you too Kyle. No Tess I mean I think I’m in love with you. I know Kyle. I am too and I’m sorry. Sorry. What are you sorry for? This. She kissed him and warped him at the same time. She then went to be with Max. The granolith picked up speed and shuddered then slowed down. This was it. She glanced behind her the window that should be facing earth as the door opened. She placed her hand over her stomach again and made a choice. Maybe love for her out there was gone, but in her was growing love. And she would give that love all the choices he needed. Throwing a warp around her stomach she stepped out to meet her fate.

This double POV of Kyle and Tess was done very well I think!
The emotions in both during this experience was very touching and I was pulled in by the entire ordeal. How Tess felt as she left Earth, leaving Kyle and everything behind. Kyle and his wish that Tess would return and his torn emotions of Alex. I just thought it was an incredible story of two people and thier destinies! Great job!!

Awesome piece of work, Roselle. Excellent (and very accurate, I think) portrayals of all three characters.
Lovely work. :D
What a heartbreaking line. I can definitely see Kyle fighting inner demons over these two sides.Ti88 wrote:Just thinking it made him nauseous.
