Re: Doctor Who Fic Recs
Darn it Gioia! You roped me in!
I keep a list of favorites on Livejournal and on Teaspoon.
In particular though...anything and everything by humansrsuperior. I worship the ground she walks on. And I wish I was exaggerating, but I'm so not. lol.
Kalleah's series is one of the most epic and popular shippy series out there, and about as close as DW fic gets to the epic nature of Rosfic.
Of Love and Waffles by rallalon is one of my favorite fics out there right now, but unfortunately it's still a WIP. She's just utterly brilliant. This fic a switch up fic where future Rose ends up accidentally switched with her past self and finds herself with Nine, while a young Rose traveling with Nine ends up with Ten pretty far in their future. Great premise. Angst to die for.
Disintigration by Wendymr is another of my favorites that I go back and reread a lot. It's another angst fest (I'm an angst monger, have I mentioned that?) going off of the premise of what would have happened if Rose had stopped traveling with the Doctor mid-Season 2.
There are SO many good ones though. A lot of DW fic is one-shot oriented and there are just so many great ones out there. All of these are on my lists there, but Days and Hours was probably the first DW fic I fell in love with. All of dettiot's are fabulous. Shinyopals and goldy dollar are both hilarious.
I'll stop there now

Re: Doctor Who Fic Recs
Cookie: Mwahahahaha!!! And I see we're both recommending wmr! I swear I'll read and adore anything Wendy writes!
I'll jump in with a few of the fic recs I had stored over at Teaspoon. When Mockingbird39 first dragged me into the fandom, she put together a list of her fanfic recs. Here, in alphabetical order, are those of hers which I dittoed, along with my own recs. I'll keep updating this as I continue to find outstanding fics:
The Adventure Verse by Aibhinn
Summary: In "Doomsday," the Doctor references "the one adventure I'll never have." What if he does have it? Reunion fic.
Gioia’s Rec: This is one of the most creative Reunion fics I’ve encountered. It’s a very adventurous romance with some well-developed OCs thrown in to the mix. Slightly AU as it was written prior to S3 of DW, but nearly prophetic in other areas.
Another Word for You by surrexi
Summary: Rose is trapped in a parallel universe. Jack runs Torchwood III. And the Doctor travels the stars. That's how it is. Until one man's folly brings Rose back home. Because in the end, they are Rose and Jack and the Doctor. And nowhere is quite right if they aren't together.
Gioia’s Rec: This is such a lovely version of how we might’ve gotten Jack, Rose and the Doctor back together post-Doomsday! I really, really loved it. Spoilers through DW S3 and TW S1.
The Candle That Burns Brightest by icebluenothing
Gioia’s Rec: A really cool AU version of "Parting of the Ways"
The Certainty of Chance by Howlcastle
Summary: The Doctor has found a way between Universes, but he will have to sacrifice his life to do it, as Rose in turn will have to sacrifice her freedom.
Gioia’s Rec: This is an absolutely amazing, imaginative, brilliant, captivating story. The Doctor returns to Rose after Doomsday in a most unique way. She ends up giving of herself in a surprising way, too. This creative tale is immensely heart-warming.
Cheating Time by Gillian Taylor and WMR
Summary: He's saved the universe over and over again. He's lost everything, including his own race. Doesn't the universe owe him something in return?
Gioia’s Rec: This is my absolute favorite Doomsday fix-it.
The Chaosverse by earlgreytea68 aka
Ten/Rose
Gioia’s Rec:: This just might be the very best babyfic I've discovered in the Whoverse. The epic-length series goes AU mid-way through S2 with fantastic results. There's angst, drama, romance and loads of laughter. As I clicked on each chapter, I never knew if I'd end it bawling my eyes out or laughing hysterically. Best of all, I think the author just may have written the best kids-in-fic that I've ever seen. I was amazed by the amazingly brilliant interpretation of childlike behavior mixed with a Timelord's genius.
Disintegration by wmr
Mockingbird39’s Rec: I like this one because Rose leaves of her own free will. She realizes that she's stuck, the relationship is stuck, etc., and goes to figure her life out on her own.
Gioia’s Rec: I'll recommend anything written by wmr! This particular one is perfect because she captures this idea that many of the fans had, both before and after "Doomsday," that "forever" was a bit of an unrealistic statement for Rose to make. That doesn't mean she loves him any less - just that she may have bit a bit naive in that moment. I love how this awesome shipper writes this fic.
Everyman by basingstoke
It starts on a beach and ends in a city.
Gioia’s Rec: What if Jack IS the Face of Boe? I was extremely upset by the hint at the end of “Utopia.” The very idea horrified me! Mockingbird39 directed me to this fic, which she said comforted her about that idea. It definitely made it less horrific!
A Fantastic Life by Asano
Summary: Creation is a tapestry of universes woven together. In one world, a Doctor has lost his Rose. In another, a Rose struggles to live a fantastic life without her Doctor. Sometimes, threads can tangle. Post-Doomsday.
Far Away by jinni
Gioia’s Rec: Angsty, but read anyway because the next one makes it okay.
So Keep Breathing by jinni
Gioia’s Rec: Really good follow-up to Far Away. I’ve followed Jinni’s fics in the Roswell and Harry Potter fandoms for several years. She is undeniably fantastic!
The Finders-verse (“Finders Keepers”) by DameRuth
Summary: Post-Doomsday fixit
Gioia’s Rec: This is another of my favorite reunion fics, and since it’s from DameRuth, you know it’s brilliant. I really love Capt. Jack’s inclusion in this, too! ;-) Start with “Finder’s Keepers.” One of my favorite one-shots in this series is ”Walkabout”, which gives a great picture of what a near-eternal existence with the Doctor and Rose would be like. There’s a great sense of independence that exists there which I really like.
Five Ways Rose Didn't Reunite with the Doctor - and One Way She Did by Camilla Sandman
Summary: The impossible is possible. It's still going to be nothing like she imagined. [Implied Doctor/Rose. Special guest stars One, Five, Eight, Nine and Martha]
For Want of a Tie by momdaegmorgan & sinecure
Gioia’s Rec: Some of the most spectacular smut I've ever read is written by momdaegmorgan and sinecure. I honestly don't know how to pick a favorite out of their many fics! The one I'm listing here has been chosen because it is a result of one of the recent Support Stacie auctions, but I love all of their fics so much that I'll just encourage smut lovers to plan on spending a lot of reading time at Shiver & Shake where they archive their amazing fics.
Ghost in the Machine by Rain
Summary: Rose is lost in time. Cue a rollercoaster ride of comedy, tragedy, misunderstandings, miracles and faces from the past.
Gioia’s Rec: This multi-era fic is just awesome. The other doctors are mere glimpses. This is set during the time of Rose, Jack & Nine traveling together, just prior to Boom Town.
Heart Shaped by Lillibet
Gioia’s Rec: Funny Nine/Rose porn. In fact, this is quite possibly my favorite nine/rose smut EVER. Mockingbird39, who says she has a hard time believing most excuses to get Nine/Rose in bed, listed this off as one of her favorite smut fics, too.
Illyria by TARDIS_stowaway
Summary: Three years after Doomsday, Rose finds her new universe's version of the Ninth Doctor. Rose may be running for her life, but she's not the one most in need of rescue. Also, the TARDIS looks like a ticket booth. The title of the series comes from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
Gioia’s Rec: This is the fic that introduced me to the concept of an Alt!Nine, and it remains an absolute favorite in that category.
Ivory & Horn by Tara O’Shea
Summary: A quiet walk across the ice fields of Kos turns into more than either the Doctor or Rose planned for.
Gioia’s Rec: What if the Doctor ditched Rose?
Jed And Friends by
Summary: The shared adventures of Jedediah Holbrook (who bears an uncanny resemblance to a certain Captain), Rose Tyler and the Doctor in Pete's World.
Gioia’s Rec: There are few alt!Jacks that I have seen introduced in fanfic in a very believable fashion. The number of circumstances that would need to be aligned to make such a scenario possible are nearly insurmountable. But DameRuth presents a simplified, logical and very exciting adventure in which we get to see Pete’s World’s version of Capt. Jack run into Rose and 10.5 shortly after they get their new TARDIS operating. As always, DameRuth’s characterizations and plots are spectacular.
Jiggery Pokery by gylzgirl
Gioia’s Rec: Another short, cute, impossible one: Rose calls herself in the past with a warning about what will happen in “Parting of the Ways.”
Last Dance by wmr
Summary: Will you take me back to see ‘im, please? Jus’ to see ‘im. That’s all I want, Doctor. Just to look at ‘im again, and maybe hear his voice.
Gioia’s Rec: This story is such a fantastic, insightful look into Jackie’s heart and her relationship with Pete. When she asks the Doctor to take her back in time to see Pete, we get an amazing character piece which not only offers us great insight into Jackie, but also a bit more understanding about what Rose and the Doctor think of the events in “Father’s Day.”
A Man Who Wasn't There: An Alt!Series 2 by Coru
Summary: The Doctor survives the Parting of the Ways and continues to adventure with Rose Tyler.
Gioia’s Rec: Nine survives "Parting of the Ways," leaving us with a S2 that features him instead of Ten. I love Ten, of course, but it's fascinating reading this series and seeing how very different things might've been had Nine been present. The differences between the two Doctors are really highlighted here as a result of some very careful writing which avoids making the fic series redundant in any way. Things aren't necessarily better with Nine - they're just different. And very, very interesting.
Mauve & Dangerous Fanfic Winners
Gioia’s Rec: Check out this list of great fics! It’s an award site, so obviously each of those listed on here are award-winning fics. ;-)
Of More Value Than Many Sparrows by icebluenothing
Summary: Set after Father's Day and before The Empty Child "Don't look up. Look around you." If you can't change history, what use is time travel?
Gioia’s Rec: I like this one because it bridges the gap between the broken Rose we see at the end of "Father's Day," and the one who goes chasing after a child up on a roof in "The Empty Child." Brilliant use of angst and despair, since it features a moment near to all of our hearts. It’s just so inspiring ultimately!
The Oft Dark Path of Dreams by SCAngel
Mockingbird39’s Rec: Dark and angsty, but it has Eccleston. And I do love the Eccleston.
One Hundred Years by SCAngel
Mockingbird39’s Rec:I would love to see this one made into a miniseries. Angsty, but ends well.
One Thing We Always Suspected About Captain Jack by redscharlach
Summary: Rose is randy, the Doctor is dithering, and Jack has a pants-shaking revelation to make.
Ouroborus by Chicketieboo
Mockingbird39 wrote: This one is a masterpiece. The author reminds me of Bennie from Roswell, in that she's telling a huge story that the characters got caught up in, as opposed to a story about the characters. This is the one that ends vaguely, but you should still read it because it's just that good. Pretty long, too. Oh, and it has a YouTube video that is gorgeous. I dare you to watch the video and then try NOT to read the story. Minor spoilers for Series 3, but it was written before S3 aired.
The Persephone Problem by Lostwolfchats
Summary: Set immediately after Father's Day, communication failures between the Doctor and Rose could very well have fatal consequences. Only by trusting each other completely will they make it out of this adventure alive.
Gioia’s Rec: I love stories based on Greek mythology. This adventure takes place on a planet with a culture similar to that of ancient Greece. The Ninth Doctor is beautifully in character here.
Planned by Timekpr
Mockingbird39’s Rec: Doctor post-Time War, pre Rose. A few things about his life become clear after he destroys the Time Lords.
Summary: Romana had tried to tell him, at the end. Her once beautiful voice now just a grating whisper echoing across the void in a last transmission from a dying TARDIS.
The Power of Two by LostWolf
Summary: (10, 8, Rose) (approx. 9000 words) Ten gets jealous when Rose meets Eight.
Gioia’s Rec: I like fics in which Rose gets to meet an earlier incarnation of the Doctor. However most of those fics don’t manage to accomplish nearly as much as this one does with the meeting. The author neatly compares and contrasts Eight and Ten, giving us great insight into the Doctor by letting us see the man he was before the Time War. The way they each react to Rose and to each other is very telling. There’s also a very clever bit of creativity here in regards to the Doctor’s Time Sense and Bad Wolf.
Rapture by LostWolf
Summary: A series of short stories exploring the relationship between Rose and the 10th Doctor. Adult/humour.
Gioia’s Rec: This series is epic-length in its entirety. It is eventually going to be a baby fic. I just love the Tenth Doctor’s characterization in this. The humor is side-splittingly funny and the romance is so very, very sweet. This is absolutely lovely.
Really Wild Things by Cavalorn
Summary: Two years after the events of Doomsday, Rose Tyler notices something in the Van Statten collection that gives her an idea.
Gioia’s Rec: One of my favorite alt!Nine fics. I like the science behind this and I love, love, love a Manic!Nine who listens to the Smiths.
Reunited by Aibhinn
Summary: The Rift is much more active than it was, and has been disgorging aliens and out-of-time people at an alarming rate including one person Jack never expected to see again.
Gioia’s Rec: One of my favorite reunion fics! I love the idea of Jack finding Rose first, and this author does it beautifully. The story is very romantic, the protagonists are all in-character and the story features a fascinating plot. Starts out Jack/Rose and ends up Jack/Rose/Ten.
Revisionist History or, Of Ovals and Angels by rhipowered
Summary: The Doctor gets sick of musical events and commissions Rose in reinventing the Watergate scandal.
Seed Pearls by HonorH
Summary: When all Rose's memories of the Doctor are stripped away from her, she knows something is terribly wrong--but occasionally, just occasionally, the universe gives back as much as it takes away.
Mockingbird39’s Rec: Rose dealing with the consequences of her being in a universe where there isn't supposed to be a Rose Tyler. Bonus: Eccleston-ish character.
Gioia’s Rec: I've come back to read this fic several times!
The Six Stages of a Human Time Lord Biological Metacrisis (Or: How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Frosting) by Gowdie
Ten II/Rose
Gioia’s Rec:: As unfolded73 (another fabulous author!) said, this really sets the gold standard for Rose/Ten II fics. The story is set post "Journey's End" and really covers the entire landscape as far as the Doctor discovers human emotions on all levels. Humor, grief, anger, lust - it's all there and it's beautiful. VERY well done. This is what fanfic writers should aim to achieve.
Sonic Envy by Lost Wolf
Summary: (Nine/Rose) Pure smut! (approx. 8000 words) The Doctor is jealous of Jack and Rose reaps the rewards!
Gioia’s Rec: This is a fantastic example of how sex scenes can be written in a way that is more emotional than physical. There’s so much tangible emotion in this scene that the event feels almost ethereal, not at all defined by the mechanics of sex. I love how this author writes sex scenes, but this particular fic is one of her best in that regard.
A Tale of Two Doctors by sensiblecat
Summary: At the end of Time Crash the two TARDISes separated and took Five and Ten back to their respective timelines. But something went a bit wrong. The Doctors separated. The TARDIS sort of......cloned. Now Five has Ten's TARDIS, and he's about to find out about the Year that Never Was. But why's he in a parallel world, and who is the girl waiting on the beach?
The Top Five by funmonkey -
Summary: The Doctor and Captain Jack Harkness, in a dive at the arse-end of the galaxy, sink ever deeper into their drinking trousers...
Torchwood Babiez by spastasmagoria and Jigglykat
Summary: An eventual four part comic series in which we see everybody's favorite heroes made...miniature. Designed specifically to kill you with cute. The byproduct of too much booze and conventions, we give to you: WHY KIDS AND TORCHWOOD SHOULD NEVER BE IN THE SAME SENTENCE. (comic-fic)
Gioia’s Rec: This story told in comic book form is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. You’ll need to be familiar with at least the first half of Torchwood S1 and Doctor Who S2 in order to get some of the jokes. It’s screamingly hilarious!
Turn Your Back, Look Away and Blink by CharmingSlayer
Summary: Rose Tyler has been living in her alternate world for five years until she encounters the weeping angels who send her back to November 1, 1913. The thing Rose doesn't know is that she is now before the split of the universes and that a certain human John Smith is only miles away with dangerous aliens on his trail.
Gioia’s Rec: The summary says it all! I love this story’s creative, unique approach to reuniting the Doctor and Rose.
The Watching Over Series by wmr aka WendyMR
Summary: I went back to her estate, in the nineties... I watched her grow up. And who knew?
Gioia’s Rec: Written post-Doomsday. In “Utopia” Jack mentioned that he watched Rose grow up. I loved this concept and desperately hoped someone would write about it. Voila! Very emotionally evocative. The series contains three fics: “Protector,” “Guardians,” and “Defenders.”
Why And Wherefore In All Things by lookatmoiye7
Summary: Torchwood’s purpose, other than the capture and subsequent imprisonment of the Doctor, is to protect the British Empire. As a lower-level member, he hadn’t known the entirety of what Torchwood did. Now that he’s a director, he pretty much knows every single detail, and he wishes he doesn’t.
Gioia’s Rec: What if Jack had been director of Torchwood One at Canary Wharf? I love what-if stories! This is a fantastic alternate view to “Doomsday!”
This doesn't even include most of my favorite post-S4 fics! So I'm sure I'll be back with more later.

Re: Doctor Who Fic Recs
I'll pay out in cookies if you can get authors to post these fics here. Oh and I made your rec thread sticky - cause well, I can
It all started with a boy, a girl, and a silver handprint.

Dude, *I* haven't read most of those, Gioia. Although are they Nine fics? Because I almost never read Nine fics...

I'd love to go recruit some of those authors! We have several of my favorites floating around here (dameruth, ponygirl, wmr, dave7, etc, etc...), maybe they'll post some of theirs?
Cookie, those probably are lots of Nine fics, since Mockingbird39 started out assembling that list and she's a big Nine fan. I need to start assembling more of my favorite Ten fics!

Re: Doctor Who Fic Recs
Stopping back by to list a few other links for fic recs. I've looked through these and agree with all the fics rec'd on these lists. Even if they aren't all my type of fics, they're all really well written. Again, in no certain order:
The_Tenzo's fic recs
WMR's fic recs
Quite_Right_Too - a really good fic rec community on LJ
Sleeping With Ghost's fic recs
Fic recs by ljconstantine
I've got more communities or LJ fic rec tags that I'll add as I find them in my unorganized notes.

Here's a link to my Calufrax recs -- not that these are by any means the only fics I consider worth reccing, but they are ones I hold dear, and all the pertinent links and descriptions are already in place:

Thank you so much for coming over and posting those! I'll agree with what you said on LJ: It is definitely great to spread the word on good fics! I always figure that this is not only the best way to encourage good authors to keep writing (i.e., by supplying them with more readers), it is also the best form of proselytizing that we have for our fandom! ;-) And I'm all about spreading the Who addiction.

Re: Doctor Who Fic Recs
Ooh, I love fic recs!
Great idea!
Like DameRuth, I've also recced on Calufrax, so here's my recs there - as Ruth said, all links and reasons for recommendation, and also excerpts, are already in place.
Here is my favourite stories on Teaspoon page, and here is my favourite author list. If I've already favourited an author, I don't always favourite everything they've written because I know I can find it again via the author's page
Finally, thanks so much for the recs of my fics, gioia and cookie! FYI, there is a third story in the series you mention; after Protector and Guardians, the Watching Over series concludes with Defenders.
I'll try to post some fic here, though I'm certainly not going to repost all of it! One of the things which may deter me is the posting interface; you have a UBB clone here, which means that neither rich text nor HTML is acceptable, and that means converting all my formatting - bold, italics, centring etc - to UBB code to make it work. So I'm posting in rich text on LiveJournal, HTML on Teaspoon, and then a third format here... it takes a lot of time
By the way, I'd love to be able to see the icons you posted, gioia, but all I'm seeing is Photobucket 'image deleted' icons.

Re: Doctor Who Fic Recs
Great to see you here, Wendy! :-) Thanks for pointing out the link issue - I fixed all of them now. Those puppet icons are a lot of fun! They probably require a bit of knowledge of the Potter Puppet Pals to get the jokes, but I do love them.
The bb code is a bit weird to get used to. I've always wondered why they don't adjust the software to better allow for html. In the meantime, I used to just do search/replaces in Microsoft Word in order to fix my coding. I.e., replace <i> with [ i ] (minus the spaces, of course.) Still a pain, though, I'll grant you!
And thanks for pointing me to "Defender!" I'm headed over there now to read it! *happy sigh*

Re: Doctor Who Fic Recs
SUGOI!!!!
Fic Recs - I love fic recs!
I am a Doctor/Rose shipper, so all of my recommendations will focus on that.
Title: Just One Day
Author: Asano
Why: A great timey wimey adventure tale featuring three different Roses and three different versions of the Doctor (INCLUDING 8!!!)
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3242971/1/Just_One_Day
Title: Double Crossing
Author: Jessa L'Rynn
Why: This author is running in the auction, so I hope I can still recommend her. Double Crossing is hilarious - have you ever wondered what would happen if Rose and the Doctor went to a Star Trek convention? No? Well - find out anyway! Also Ace and Seven are in it!
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4433896/1/Double_Crossing
Title: Hairy Legs... and other parts
Author: mrv3000 and goldy_dollar
Why: Takes place in a world where 10.2 is actually the 14th Doctor, regenerating into a previous form to spend the rest of his life with Rose. Really sweet, shippy and funny. If you didn't like how Journey's End left our heroes, then read this for a happier resolution.
Link: http://mrv3000.livejournal.com/932732.html
Title: My True Love Gave To Me
Author: Dettiot
Why: Again, no actual adventure to speak of, but it's a really great read. Takes place before Doomsday and takes readers through a Christmas with The Doctor and Rose. Really sweet, and tells a good version of how The Doctor and Rose got together.
Link: http://dettiot.livejournal.com/367384.html
Title: The Sum Of Things
Author: Shinyopals
Why: Another 14th Doctor fic, but with an actual adventure plot! Fantastic, and it has three sequels! The Doctor and Rose, in the Tardis (eventually), saving the world, as it should be!
Link: http://shinyopals.livejournal.com/118479.html
That's enough for now! I'll post more later! I'm sure I've been outbid now so I must retreat!
