PART FORTY-FOUR:

Back at Hogwarts, Dumbledore escorted Genevieve to the room she had used while she was under the influence of the Imperius Curse. He made sure she was settled in for what remained of the night and assured her she wouldn’t have to return to St. Mungo’s ever again – that she was welcome at the school as long as it would take for her to overcome her memory loss. Before he left, she stopped him with a question.

“I’ve been wondering, Professor Dumbledore – when will Remus come back?”

Dumbledore adjusted his half-moon spectacles, which had begun to slip a bit down the bridge of his nose and said to her, “He should be released in the morning, my dear – once the moon has waned. Then he will be free to come back to Hogwarts.” He smiled kindly at her.

“Thank you, sir. It was just … I was worried.”

“Nothing to worry about,” he said in a reassuring voice. “Now, rest up – you’ll see him in the morning.”

*****

Around the same time, Ulysses Magnus had managed to secure authorization to use Veritaserum on Nurse Camilla, based on his suspicions that she might have seen something that would prove that Remus Lupin had indeed been inside the hospital when Genevieve escaped. And to his great pleasure, the truth potion had very illuminating results. Nurse Camilla had, against her will, indicted Lupin with every charge that Magnus had made against him – Camilla had been extremely reluctant to talk to anyone about the matter, but with a signed demand from the Ministry requiring she be questioned under the effect of the Veritaserum, she had no choice. In fact, she was so distraught over the whole affair that she resigned her position at St. Mungo’s the moment the serum wore off and left the hospital, intent on never returning.

Nonetheless, the damage was done. Magnus wasted no time. He bullied his way back into the Ministry, demanding to see Diggory again, who was still in his office, tying up the loose ends to the whole sordid affair.

“Oh, not you again, Magnus!” exclaimed Amos Diggory, as he saw the hospital administrator barging back into his office. “To what do I owe the pleasure this time? You do know I’d like to get home sometime this century?” There were large bags under his eyes and it was clear that the all-nighter in the office was wearing thin on him.

“I’ll make it worth your while this time, Diggory!” bellowed Magnus, slapping a roll of parchment in front of him onto his desk. “The nurse has been questioned and there’s the verification.” He gestured towards the parchment. “Lupin was in the hospital! I have signed testimony!” He beamed as though he had just won the Quidditch World Cup.

Diggory unrolled the parchment and scanned the evidence, poring over ever word. He frowned and looked back up at Magnus when he had finished reading.

“Honestly, Magnus,” said Diggory. “What do you want done? It seems as though you’re making a terrible fuss over …”

”Over what?” shouted Magnus. “Over a werewolf being in my facility? Why, yes. I am. It’s my duty to see to the well being of every patient in my facility and the presence of a werewolf seriously undermines my ability to do that. And the girl knew it was against the rules and yet she somehow managed to sneak him in anyhow. I want retribution and I’ll raise hell, I assure you, Diggory, if I don’t get it!”

“But, Magnus,” said Diggory. “I know Lupin. He’s not a dangerous man. He taught my boy at Hogwarts.” A glassy look came into Diggory’s eyes at the mention of his son.

“Oh, he might not be dangerous as a man, but I reckon he’s quite a bit different as a werewolf! I want the office for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures called in on this!” Magnus’ face was purple.

“All right,” said Diggory, seeing a need to appease him. “I’ll give you a meeting with Macnair, but know this – I do not back you up on your request. And I’ll tell Fudge and anyone else who’ll listen about it. I will protest any further proceedings regarding the execution of Lupin. It’s far too harsh. Executions are reserved for creatures that present some sort of hazard towards the wizarding community. Lupin does not fit that bill. On the contrary …”

“Save your speech for Fudge,” said Magnus flatly and he left for Macnair’s office.

PART FORTY-FIVE:

Magnus had a most pleasing meeting with Macnair concerning the execution.

“Of course,” muttered Macnair as he perused the evidence against Lupin. “This should be an open and shut case. This testimony proves the werewolf was on the premises and your hospital’s regulations clearly state werewolves are forbidden. With your approval, I can execute the prisoner.”

Magnus laughed. “As if you’d have to ask for my consent.” He grinned a malicious grin. “Where do I sign?”

Macnair shoved a piece of parchment in front of him and motioned to a dotted line. Magnus scrawled his signature on the line, sanctioning the destruction of one werewolf, registry number 35679001, by the name of Remus J. Lupin.

“Be here in the morning, if you want to see the execution,” grumbled Macnair. “I have an opening at 9:45 AM.”

“You can count on it,” replied Magnus, with a wicked twinkle in his eye.

*****

Macnair couldn’t believe his luck. This was the very thing that could bring him back in the good graces of the Dark Lord. All he had to do was fake the execution of Lupin and deliver him over. He’d heard through his Death Eater connections that Wormtail had bungled all plans of destroying Lupin in the past. He thought maybe he should go through with the execution after all and report back that he’d succeeded where Wormtail had failed so many times before, but thought that perhaps Voldemort might have wanted to show Wormtail himself how the job ought to be done. And Macnair wanted nothing more than to satisfy his master’s demands. He thought delivering Lupin would definitely be a way to do that.

So, he formulated a plan in his mind – smuggle Lupin out of the Ministry early in the morning and when Magnus showed up for the execution at 9:45 AM, regretfully inform him the death sentence had been carried out earlier, due to some unforeseen scheduling conflicts. Magnus would undoubtedly be a little disappointed – after all, who wouldn’t be if they’d missed an execution they were so desperately looking forward to? But he’d be content knowing that the werewolf had been destroyed. What he didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him.

Yes, Macnair was thinking this sudden stroke of good fortune was just what he needed to turn his luck around.

PART FORTY-SIX:

Genevieve didn’t wake until half past noon the next day. Once her head had hit the pillow, she’d drifted right off to sleep. She blinked her eyes into focus, then sat straight up in her bed, realizing it was the next day.

She walked sleepily to the armoire, put on some fresh clothes and started to the door, determined to see if Lupin had returned from the Ministry yet and thinking that he must have given the late hour.

A firm knocking at the door before she could open it to depart startled her. She quickly regained her composure and opened the door. Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall stood outside the room, both with looks of supreme solemnity on their faces.

Genevieve’s breathing started to quicken. This can’t be pleasant news they’ve come to bring me, looking like they do, she thought as she backed away from the door, allowing them to enter the room.

“I think you should sit down,” said McGonagall, in a softer tone than Genevieve had ever heard her use before.

*****

Looking back, Genevieve couldn’t quite remember if she heard anything past Dumbledore’s first five words. After hearing them, it was just as if a thousand sirens had begun to resound - blaring alarm bells sounded in her head. A cacophony of noises rang in her mind as she fought hard not to believe the phrase Dumbledore had just spoke. It’s a cruel joke, she thought. How unkind of him to joke like this. The din had become deafening as the thoughts joined with the sirens.

Five simple words had sent her world spiraling – He’s gone. They’ve killed him, Dumbledore had said. She thought perhaps his next words were an apology. Perhaps he was sharing how grievous he felt. She didn’t know – and frankly, at the moment she didn’t care. McGonagall’s arms had outstretched to embrace her, to comfort her, but she reeled away and crumbled into a sobbing heap on the floor. No amount of comfort was going to do her any good now. Nothing could soothe her. A part of her had just been ripped away and she felt her heart begin to bleed inwardly, longing for what had be taken away so brutally.

*****

Time had passed slowly over the next few weeks and Genevieve’s pain over the loss of Lupin had grown ever more intense as they days dragged on.

Dumbledore had promised to allow her to stay on at Hogwarts and agreed for her to be treated for her memory loss there. After Nurse Camilla had resigned from St. Mungo’s, Dr. Montgomery – Genevieve’s mediwizard – had followed suit. He had heard about the unjust execution of Lupin and couldn’t bear to work for Ulysses Magnus one more instant. Dumbledore made them an offer to continue Genevieve’s treatment at Hogwarts and they agreed. He set up temporary offices for them in the Hospital Wing and Madam Pomfrey graciously shared her amenities with them.

Genevieve’s recovery was slow – and very painful, for as the memories began to return, she’d regained ones of Lupin. Her heart ached every second for him. She couldn’t believe he was gone. Not for good. Not forever.

 THE END

Author’s Note: **dramatic music** Ah, how I love the cliffhanger endings!
