Danse de Lune
PART ONE:
Genevieve stretched out on a blanket on the ground, in a clearing just behind the Three Broomsticks Inn & Pub. It was a muggy June evening and being cooped up in her room was getting to be stifling. Her cat, Morpheus, was amusing himself by playing a game of tag with a lightning bug – he would bat at it with his paw and it would zoom back at him, bouncing off his nose. Genevieve picked up her wand and attempted to remember the Cooling Charm she’d learned just the week earlier – with a swish of her wand, she successfully managed it and reclined back on the blanket, gazing up at the bright night sky.
The moon that night was full – most people might be delighted to sit out on a summer night and gaze at the moon, but not Genevieve. She stared at the sky and wished it were a new moon. The soft moonlight shining down from above only reminded her of what she missed the most. The night would have seemed so magical, had Lupin been there holding her in his arms.
Morpheus stretched lazily, as the lightning bug fluttered away, exhausted of their game. Genevieve stroked his tortoise-shell coat and he purred. He blinked his copper eyes sluggishly and curled up to go to sleep. Genevieve sighed. For some reason, that evening she felt even lonelier than she usually did during the waxing of the moon. Even her cat couldn’t stay awake to keep her company. She didn’t feel much like just lying there – she would have preferred stretching her legs and taking a walk, ambling around that moonlit evening, but she didn’t feel safe doing that anymore. What had happened to her the previous winter had made her afraid.
She didn’t like having to live in fear, but she was part of a bigger world now -- unfortunately, a world where frightening horrors were a reality. She thought about her friends, Harry, Ron & Hermione and about all of the terrible things they had endured in their young lives. And then she thought about Remus Lupin – the one person in the world she loved and cared about the most. She thought about how he figured in to everything. A part of her wished they could both steal away into the night, leaving behind everything but their love for one another – leaving behind all of the horrible things that they were faced with everyday. She wished she could leave behind all thoughts of You-Know-Who and just live a normal life. She glared up at the moon again. Normal, she thought and heaved another sigh. They’d never have a truly normal life, but then again, what was so great about normal? She loved him just the way he was. It was just that the ache in her heart was sometimes unbearable each month when he went away.

She scooped up her slumbering cat and the blanket and wearily walked back into the pub. She fully expected to find it deserted and was surprised when she discovered Madam Rosmerta sitting at a table with several Hogwarts professors, including Professors McGonagall and Flitwick. They were deep in conversation until they noticed her stumbling in. A hush fell over their table and Madam Rosmerta hurried over to her.

“Gen, dear,” she said hastily. “I didn’t realize you were still out and about.” She looked a great deal more nervous than Genevieve had ever seen her before. “Go on up, love. PART THREE:

Genevieve hadn’t seen much of Hogwarts castle before and she had no idea where Albus Dumbledore’s office was located within the vast walls of the fortress-school. Professor McGonagall led her down corridors and up marble staircases. She’d felt like they’d been walking forever when they finally stopped in front of a stone gargoyle.

“Cotton candy,” said McGonagall sharply and the gargoyle moved, permitting them access to the moving spiral staircase that escalated them to the Headmaster’s office.

McGonagall rapped the brass door knocker against the oak door importantly and entered upon hearing a voice from within bidding them to do so.

“Good evening, Professor,” said the Headmaster to McGonagall. His light blue eyes twinkled over and fixed on Genevieve. “Good evening, young lady,” said Dumbledore pleasantly as he looked over his half-moon spectacles at her. “You must be Genevieve – I’ve heard only the best things about you, my dear. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you. Might I ask what brings you here?”

Indeed, Genevieve had never made the Headmaster’s acquaintance prior to this, but she had heard only the best things about him as well. She felt very comfortable being in his grand, circular office, about to offer her help in stopping Wormtail and his plot to murder Lupin.

Genevieve thought what a peculiar yet wonderful office it was, too – with its many portraits of former Hogwarts headmasters and headmistresses and the huge scarlet and gold bird perched near the oak door. If she hadn’t been so preoccupied with the situation at hand, she’d like to have had the opportunity to poke around there and discover more hidden treasures. But the urgency of the situation made her forget about all of that. She was ready to get straight to the point.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, too, Headmaster Dumbledore. And I’m here because of Remus … er, Professor Lupin.” She blushed at her blatant familiarity before the Headmaster, but his eyes never lost an ounce of twinkle, so she continued. “If there’s any way I can help stop Peter Pettigrew from harming him, I am willing to do so.” She stood before his desk and the serious look in her brilliant blue eyes left Dumbledore without a doubt of her sincerity.

Despite her bold courageousness, Dumbledore was apprehensive just the same. This girl was willing to take risks, but did she know how dangerous the risks were? Was she afraid? She didn’t look it, but she should have been – if she knew what she could and probably would come up against, she should have been cowering in fear. He glanced over at the frayed old Sorting Hat that was kept in his office and then at the look of determination on Genevieve’s face. Surely if she tried on the tattered old wizard’s hat, it wouldn’t hesitate to call out Gryffindor! as it sensed her innate bravery. But was bravery enough to get her through the ordeals that awaited her if he let her help?

The truth was, however, that he could use as many allies as possible, so he hesitantly decided to hear her out.

“And in what way do you think you could help, my child?” asked Dumbledore.

“I’ll do whatever you ask of me, sir,” said Genevieve.

“What if I ask you to go back to Hogsmeade and let me handle things?” he inquired. Professor McGonagall nodded approvingly at this remark.

“I’d do anything but that, Headmaster,” replied Genevieve firmly. “I’ve faced Pettigrew before and survived. I’m not afraid. He has to be stopped.”

Dumbledore’s eyes lost their twinkle and grew very solemn. “You should be afraid, my dear. With the dark power of Voldemort behind him, Peter Pettigrew should be regarded as a most formidable adversary.”

Even upon hearing his warning, Genevieve’s nerve never faltered. “I understand,” she said quietly.

“I can see you cannot be persuaded to back down. Very well. I can’t deny that I welcome any and all allies, but do you think your magical abilities are up to snuff?”

“I don’t suggest that I know everything, sir,” answered Genevieve honestly, "but Professor Lupin has taught me well.”

“In any case, you won’t be alone in your task. You will join another wizard – the one who informed us of this new plot just this afternoon. He and I have been devising a plan to track down and stop Pettigrew all evening. He will fill you in on everything you need to know momentarily.” Dumbledore turned to Professor McGonagall. “Minerva, would you mind getting those things we spoke of earlier?”

McGonagall nodded and answered, “Not at all.” She swiftly left the office.

Dumbledore turned to Genevieve again. “You’ll need to be getting underway immediately after the briefing. There’s no time to lose.”

Dumbledore faced the fireplace and called the wizard to join them.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART FOUR:

“Severus,” called Dumbledore into the fireplace. “Would you be so kind as to come up to my office? I need to apprise you of a new development.”

Genevieve stared awe-struck at Professor Snape’s head, which was floating amid the flames.

“Certainly,” answered Snape and his head disappeared with a pop.

A short time later, Snape’s head, along with the rest of him, appeared in Dumbledore’s office, this time in the flesh and through the large oak door. A slight sneer crossed his lips when he realized Genevieve was the “new development.”

Genevieve’s look in return was no better. She glared at him contemptuously. Her impression of the Potions Master had changed little since their last encounter. If there were any good reasons to back out of Dumbledore’s plan, Snape’s involvement would be at the top of the list. He cast a scornful look in her direction and it was almost as if he were reading her thoughts.

Oh no, she thought. That old crank is not going to stop you. Suck it up. This is for Remus. After blocking Snape’s piercing glares and finishing her internal pep talk, Genevieve puffed up some last minute fortitude and addressed him.

“It seems as though we’re teamed up again, Professor,” she said as naturally as she possibly could.

“So it does,” Snape replied silkily.

“Severus, I’m leaving you to fill the girl in on any pertinent details. And make haste – we don’t need to lose any more time.” With that, Dumbledore made his way through the doorway and down the corridor.

Snape still wore a scowl as he started to speak.

“It escapes me why Dumbledore would see fit to send you along on this venture.”

“Interesting that you would say that,” said Genevieve, doing her best to equal the intensity of his scowl. “I was just thinking the same thing.”

“It’s not too late to back out of this, you know?” he said, deeply hoping she’d take the suggestion and head back to the Three Broomsticks without a second thought.

“Not on your life,” she snarled. Snape got a glimpse of her sheer determination and tried not to be impressed by it.

“Well, just so we’re crystal clear on the matter, I’m in charge on this mission. You do what I say and you don’t get in my way. Do you understand?”

Genevieve nodded, but thought to herself, What a pigheaded fool!

“Care to give me the debriefing now? Dumbledore said we shouldn’t waste time …”

“I’m fully aware of what Dumbledore said, girl!” he snapped.

Genevieve had to fight hard not to ask him if he’d been born that nasty or if he had to work at being that way, but she figured she’d do better not to instigate more trouble, so she stood silently as he began to give her the information regarding Peter Pettigrew.

“I’m called to join the others from time to time,” he started to say as he rubbed his left arm. His face was stoic. “And the last time I was called – just yesterday – I found out about Pettigrew’s new idea for vengeance against Lupin.”

“Called?” asked Genevieve, confused. “To join with who?”

Snape pushed up the sleeve on his cloak and showed her the mark – a sinister-looking faded marking of a skull with a snake protruding out of its mouth.

Genevieve instinctively took several steps backwards and gasped. “Y-you’re one of them?” she asked, astonished. “You’re a Death Eater?”

“I was,” he said as he hastily pushed the sleeve back down, covering the ominous mark. “Now I’m loyal to Dumbledore.” She looked at him skeptically. “I’m on the right side.” He was unsure of what else to say to her. Clearly she was shaken by this sudden revelation.

Her dislike for him had been based on the fact that she thought he was essentially an ill-natured, bad-tempered man who held on to grudges too long. She had no idea – no earthly idea – that he’d once been loyal to Lord Voldemort. This really put things into perspective for her.

But he’s on the right side now, she thought. Dumbledore wouldn’t trust him if he wasn’t. So why was she scared half to death standing in the same room with him?

“It’s not too late to back out,” he said again, this time with more sympathy than anything else. She looked like she’d rather be anywhere else but there with him – the former Death Eater.

She shook her head and fought hard to regain her composure. “No,” she said coolly. “That was just – um, quite a thing to hear. I had no idea.”

“It’s not exactly something I like to bring up.” His voice was quieter and calmer and without its usual snark.

“Tell me the news about Pettigrew. What’s his next move?” She could tell he was no more comfortable about discussing his past than she was and besides that, they needed to get down to business.

“We’re not afraid of him coming to Hogwarts again,” he started. “There are too many barriers in place to stop him. Last winter he wasn’t able to get past Hogsmeade. That’s why he tried to set a trap for Lupin there. At the time, his energies were focused on both Lupin and Sirius Black. He wanted revenge for what happened the first time Lupin came to teach at Hogwarts. Then it became apparent to him that Lupin was the easier target. Black’s location was harder for him to pinpoint, but he could nearly always predict where Lupin would be. He was either teaching or confined, depending on the stage of the moon. But once his planned backfired, Pettigrew became enraged and obsessed with destroying Lupin.”

Genevieve listened intently. What Snape was saying made sense. She remembered what Wormtail was like. Picturing him now made her shudder. “Do you know where to find him?” she asked.

Before he could answer her, Professor McGonagall had come in and was handing him a leather case. “Here are some things Professor Dumbledore and I thought you could use, Severus.”

He thanked her and she left. He took out his wand, reduced the case and tucked it securely in a pocket inside his cloak.

“Pettigrew,” Genevieve reminded him. “Do you know his location?”

“I have a good notion,” answered Snape. “Do you know how to apparate?”

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... Thanks Tam <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

You guys, keep the feedback coming. I love it & it helps fuel me!! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

*********************************************

PART FIVE:

Lupin had taught Genevieve how to apparate in the spring. She’d passed the test after her first try. She found it to be rather effortless, even though it was supposedly a difficult task to master. She’d been told there were many witches and wizards who never learned to do it properly.

“I can apparate,” she told Snape proudly. “I’m licensed and everything.”

“Glad to hear Lupin’s using his time with you constructively,” he grumbled. “Let’s get underway, then. No time for palavering.”

That was something they both could agree on. She was in no mood for idle chitchat, either. She was ready to set out on their mission.

They left the school grounds and apparated into a simple, nondescript-looking Muggle village. It was eerily quiet and dark. They hurried out of the street where they’d appeared and took cover between two nearby buildings, in case anyone should be lurking close enough to notice them.

“Pettigrew’s somewhere in this village,” Snape whispered. “I can’t strictly define his exact location, but he is somewhere in the vicinity.”

“I can’t see a thing,” whispered Genevieve. “Is it safe to light my wand?”

“For now,” answered Snape in a hushed tone.

“Lumos,” said Genevieve as the tip of her sandalwood wand lit.

“I have an idea,” he said, “but I’m going to need your complete cooperation for this to go as planned. Can you agree to that?”

“Tell me what your plan is and I’ll tell you if I can agree,” said Genevieve in a quiet voice.

“Now, I can’t be sure that Pettigrew is alone,” he began, “but if he is, I’ve got an idea to lure him back to Hogsmeade with us. Dumbledore will have Azkaban guards there waiting to take him away.”

Genevieve nodded, clearly interested in what he was going to say next.

“Here’s where you come in. You will act as bait – to lure the rat into the trap.”

”Bait?” she asked with a gulp. “Somehow I get the feeling I’m not going to like what being ‘bait’ entails.”

”He will need to think you’re dead,” said Snape bluntly.

“ Dead!” shrieked Genevieve before she could stop herself. Snape hissed for her to hush.

“Quiet, you silly girl!” He glared at her sternly. “Not really dead – he’ll only think you are. I have a potion for you to drink and he’ll be fooled into thinking you’re dead. It will put you into quite a deep sleep.”

”And the purpose for this charade is?” She wasn’t going to fake her own death unless she knew exactly why.

“You drink the potion and fall into a deep sleep. I bring you to Pettigrew, telling him I’ve killed you. I invite him to come back to Hogsmeade with me in the morning, after the waning of the moon, where I will propose to hand Lupin over to him. I’ll suggest that you will be given as a ‘gift’ for Lupin before he can finally kill him. He won’t be able to refuse such an offer.”

Genevieve stared blankly at him. “And did you come up with that morbid little plan all by yourself?”

Snape raised an eyebrow and began a retort, but Genevieve cut him off.

“As much as I hate to admit this, it sounds like a good plan – if nothing goes wrong, that is.”

Snape grinned smugly at her admission. “We need to find him before we can do any of that, however. He’ll be nearby. My instincts tell me we should look there.” He gestured to a cottage across the street, barely visible in the darkness.

“How do you know?” Genevieve asked.

“I don’t,” he replied. “But it doesn’t look as well kept as the others nearby, so it’s probably vacant. An ideal place for him to hide while he plots his next move.”

At this, Snape pulled out the leather case Professor McGonagall had given him. It was still in a reduced state, but a flick of his wand brought it back to normal size. He opened it and took out two items – a small, corked vial and a cloak. He reduced the case once more and stashed it back in his pocket.

“We’ll investigate the house under the cover of the cloak.”

“Is that Harry’s?” asked Genevieve, surprised to see Snape holding an Invisibility Cloak.

“Potter doesn’t own a one-of-a-kind, my dear,” he snarled at the mere mention of Harry’s name. He held out the vial and said, “This is the potion you’ll be drinking.”

“What is it?” she asked suspiciously as she eyed the fluid in the narrow container.

“Asphodel and wormwood,” he said. “It’s called the Draught of Living Death.”

“Aptly named,” chortled Genevieve.

Snape, who wasn’t amused, haughtily stuffed the container in his pocket and said, “Let’s get on with it.” He swept the Invisibilty Cloak over their heads and they started towards the shadowy, vacant cottage.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ...
