Even undergoing dental work without a numbing potion and swimming in shark-infested waters ranked above playing dead for one of Lord Voldemort’s top minions, but she knew it had to be done. With Wormtail out of the way, the immediate threat to Lupin would be gone and one of the barriers between those who were fighting the dark lord and Voldemort himself would vanish, spending his days with the dementors in Azkaban.

Shuffling along under the cloak wasn’t the easiest chore in the world, she soon learned. If he kicks my heels again, thought Genevieve, I’m going to stick this wand –

“Slow down,” he hissed from behind her. “Go towards that window.” The window to which he was referring was on the side of the house and looked into the front parlor. They peered in, but saw nothing but furniture covered with sheets. Snape glanced above and saw a window on the second story, with a faint flickering light glowing from within. He fumbled his hand into one of his pockets and took out what appeared to be a miniscule broomstick. Genevieve had to bite her lip to keep from laughing out loud. The thought of Snape riding that tiny broomstick nearly threw her into hysterics.

But the broomstick didn’t stay tiny for long. Snape used the same charm he’d used on the leather case from McGonagall on it and it was full-size again in no time.

“I’m going to look through the window,” he told her in a hushed tone. “I want you to hide yourself behind those shrubs under the window. Keep your wand ready and don’t come out unless you hear my voice.”

Genevieve nodded and slipped out from under the cloak. She crouched behind the dense shrubbery and felt a whoosh of air, as the invisible Snape rose on broomstick to look through the upstairs window. A few moments later, he returned and called out to Genevieve in a whisper.

“It’s Pettigrew, all right,” he confirmed. “It’s now or never.” He took the vial that held the draught out of his pocket, uncorked it and handed it to Genevieve. “You may want to sit down,” he added. “This potion acts rather quickly.”

Genevieve took the vial nervously as she sat on the damp grass and wondered what asphodel and wormwood tasted like. It didn’t look too appealing. She hesitated for only a moment, and then swallowed it down in one swig. Almost immediately, her hands and feet began to feel swollen and heavy and she found it nearly impossible to keep her head steady. She thought she heard Snape’s voice say, “Don’t fight it – just relax” but she couldn’t relax. Her body wanted to stay alert, but the potion was far too strong. Ultimately, the draught won the battle and she slumped over, looking just like a corpse.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART SEVEN:

Snape promptly hid the Invisibility Cloak and broomstick by reducing them and hoisted Genevieve’s limp, lifeless body from the damp ground. I sure hope Pettigrew buys this, he thought, or we’re both in big trouble. He looked at Genevieve as he held her motionless body. You’ll probably never get the pleasure of hearing me say this, Snape thought, but you’re a very brave girl. He carried her towards the front door of the cottage and hoped against hope that Wormtail would believe their charade.

“Alohomora,” he whispered as the door opened. He was a bit surprised. He expected some sort of charm to be set up blockading intruders from the cottage. Pettigrew always was quite the numbskull. He carried Genevieve up the steep flight of stairs towards the room where he’d seen the flickering light earlier. The door to the room was open, but barely. The same light he’d made out before still glimmered and made shadows on the walls of the hallway he was standing in. His arms were feeling tingly under the weight of Genevieve’s unconscious body. Nudging the door to the room open with his foot, Snape strode in and faced his former classmate.

“Peter,” Snape drawled in his foulest of voices. “I think I may have something you’ll find very appealing.” Pettigrew was sitting in an armchair, half-asleep, as a large pillar candle was slowly burning down beside him on a side table. He rubbed his groggy eyes with his right hand and blinked a few times, contemplating whether or not the person standing before him in the room was a figment of his imagination.

“Wh-wh-what?” Pettigrew asked as he yawned a great, primal yawn. “What are you doing here, Severus?”

“I’ve brought you something that’ll make your day,” Snape said as he tossed Genevieve’s body onto the four-poster bed that was on the other side of the side table. He knew tossing her to the floor might have been more dramatic, but he didn’t want to injure her. It got Pettigrew’s attention, nonetheless, as he sat in his armchair gaping. “Hell,” added Snape. “It ought to make your bloody millennium!” He smirked as he gestured over to Genevieve.

“Is she …” began Pettigrew.

“Dead?” finished Snape. “As a doornail,” he said with a sinister chuckle. He’s going to take the bait, he thought to himself. I can see the wheels turning in his thick little mind. “What is it that you want more than anything in this whole, miserable world, Peter?”

Pettigrew found it hard to take his eyes off of Genevieve. “Let me help jog your memory,” Snape continued. “Wouldn’t it be Lupin’s head on a silver platter?”

Pettigrew got up from his armchair and walked towards the four-poster. He said nothing, but clutched one of her hands in his. He felt her wrist and then dropped it to her side. “There’s no pulse,” he said.

“I’d like you to find a corpse with a pulse,” he chortled. “That’d be unique.” Pettigrew still stared at the body lying on the bed. Snape went on. “I know where to find Lupin in the morning. What say you and I bring him a little gift, Peter, my boy? Nothing like a little mental anguish before you do him in, eh?” He chuckled a bit, wishing Pettigrew would say something.

“How did you know I was here?” asked Pettigrew brusquely.

Snape had hoped he wouldn’t ask that question. “It was difficult tracking you down, but after I killed the girl, I knew you’d want to know.”

”Why’d you kill her?” inquired Pettigrew, who Snape had observed was eyeing him most suspiciously.

“Because Lupin loves the little wench,” he said, trying to remain cool. He’s not buying it. Snape felt the perspiration forming in his palms. I can’t act first. I need to make him buy into this, somehow. But he had an overwhelming urge to try to reach for his wand. No, he told himself. For all you know, Voldemort could be hiding in the cellar. I might be able to take on this idiot, but Voldemort is another story.

Pettigrew’s eyes narrowed. He didn’t believe one word that Snape had uttered. He raised his left hand and struck Snape’s head forcefully, sending him crumbling in a great, black heap on the floor. He scooped Genevieve's body up off the bed and left the unconscious Potions Master lying still on the floor as he fled from the cottage, muttering under his breath about the Draught of Living Death.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART EIGHT:

Pettigrew growled as he dragged Genevieve’s lifeless body down a narrow corridor. I’m not so much a fool as everyone thinks, he reflected. What does Severus suppose, trying to pull the wool over my eyes like that? Draught of Living Death, was it?

*****

The dawn of a new day had begun. Sunlight streamed in through the window, shining its golden beams onto the figure on the floor. Daylight was breaking, but Severus Snape didn’t catch the first light. A blow to his head just hours earlier had sent him spiraling to the floor, where he’d slept much harder than he would have ever wanted to. Now, as the warm sunshine touched his face, he began to stir. He mumbled unintelligibly as he painfully opened his eyes, only to shut them tight again, the intense burning in them being too much to bear. He fumbled to his hands and knees, but didn’t dare try to stand up straight away. His head spun and his gut felt powerfully nauseous. In his disoriented state, he began to think. You daft bastard, what did you have to drink last night? But it didn’t take long for the events of the previous night to return to his mind. He glanced over to the bed – empty. Bullocks, he thought. He took the girl! He grabbed his head, which was still throbbing with pain. He felt like he could use a couple dozen mediwizards, but knew he had no time to think of himself. He had to get back to Hogwarts to tell Dumbledore the plan had gone horribly wrong.

*****

Another individual awoke at the dawning of the new day, but with a much more cheerful outlook. Remus Lupin stretched as he stood up from the floor of his office. The floor may have been comfortable enough for a wolf, but for a man it was less than so. He yawned and thought of Genevieve and whether she’d want company for breakfast that morning. He knew he did, so he cleaned himself up and headed out of his office, thinking how wonderful it would be to see her again.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... I know it was short, guys. This part's a little longer, though. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

**********************************************
PART NINE:

Remus Lupin was ambling down the corridor, towards the entrance hall of the school, when the immense doors swung open and Severus Snape exploded in, looking half-crazed and bedraggled. Lupin noticed the swollen bruise on the man’s head and sensed immediately that there was danger afoot. Snape was gasping, out of breath from the sprint from outside the school grounds where he had apparated.

“Dumbledore,” he wheezed. “I need to see Dumbledore! Matter of life – cough – and death.” He was hanging onto the doorframe, as if it was his only means of standing upright.

“What’s this all about, Severus?” Lupin asked, trying to steady him.

“No time,” he rasped. “Just get Dumbledore now!”

Lupin shot down the corridor and galloped up the marble staircases, taking three steps at a time. He had a bad feeling about whatever had happened to Snape. By the time he got to the headmaster’s office, he too was winded. He caught his breath and informed Dumbledore that Snape was waiting for him in the entrance hall and whatever the situation was it didn’t seem good. Dumbledore nodded and the two men hurried back down to the ground floor of the castle.

“Severus,” Dumbledore called out as he approached Snape. “What’s happened?”

Snape’s breathing wasn’t quite as labored as it had been, but he still spoke with some difficulty, apparently more from the pain he was still feeling from his injury than anything else. “The plan went horribly wrong,” he said. “The girl …” He coughed again. “He’s taken the girl.” A fresh wave of guilt swept over him as he saw the realization creep into Lupin’s expression.

“No,” Lupin whispered. “Don’t tell me … not Genevieve.” He turned to Dumbledore. “Please, Headmaster,” he pleaded. “ Anyone but Genevieve.”

Dumbledore was not indifferent to Lupin’s pleas, but he needed to find out what had happened the night before. If there was any hope of rescuing the girl, Lupin needed to step back for a moment and allow him to talk to Snape. He ignored the anguished professor and urged Snape to continue speaking. “Tell me exactly what happened, Severus.”

Snape recounted the events of the previous evening. As he listened, Lupin looked as if he would be ill. Several times he tried to interrupt, but Dumbledore calmly stopped him. When Snape was finished, Lupin finally got a chance to interject.

“How could you put her at risk like that?” he shot at Snape. “What were you thinking?”

Snape furrowed his brow and began to reply, but Dumbledore stopped him. “Genevieve came to us,” the headmaster said. “She was unwavering. She wanted to help and there was nothing either one of us could have said to stop her.”

“But you did nothing to protect her!” shouted Lupin, sending a cutting stare right through Snape. “She’s probably dead and it’s all your fault!” A rush of emotion flooded over Remus – a mixture of guilt, jealousy, grief and disgust. He thought of himself earlier that morning, when he was anticipating seeing Genevieve again. And now, he wasn’t even sure if she was still alive. How could I have known then that a force darker than jealousy and stronger than love had begun to take hold of Genevieve? he thought as he glared at Snape. If she was still alive, she was certainly in Voldemort’s clutches by now and that was surely a fate worse than death.

“Be rational, Lupin!” barked Snape. “Just because it was me, you’re presuming I didn’t take precautions.”

”Lot of good they did,” he spat back.

Snape didn’t answer. He was right. What good did they do? The girl was gone and he was to blame. The guilt was welling up in him. He fought back the memories of another time an innocent woman had died at the hands of Voldemort and it made him wince. Those memories were too unbearable. No, he thought as he choked them back down and focused on the situation at hand.

“We can’t presume the girl is dead,” said Dumbledore after an uncomfortable moment of silence. “We mustn’t imagine the worst scenario.” Dumbledore put a hand on Lupin’s unsteady shoulder. “Remus, we’ll find her.”

**********************************************
Author's Note: The line How could I have known then that a force darker than jealousy and stronger than love had begun to take hold of Genevieve? was taken almost directly from my favorite movie of all time, Moulin Rouge. I love that line so much that I just had to work it in somehow. I think it fits in pretty well here. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART TEN:

Genevieve had never felt more sluggish as she had when she slowly lifted her eyelids that morning. The effects of the draught had begun to wear off and she was getting feeling back in her listless body. Her muscles were still rather tense and her bones felt like they weighed several times more than they actually did as she tried to move her limbs. She felt a dampness beneath her – like moist soil – wherever she was smelled like the inside of a potted plant. The strong aroma of earth filled her nostrils and she focused her eyes on her surroundings. It was a tight space, wherever it was, and it resembled an animal’s burrow – like a hole hidden away below the surface of the ground. The only difference between this place and an actual animal den would have been the large, very human doorway at the other end. A hunched form sat near the doorway and Genevieve tried to sit up as she called to the figure by the door.

“Snape,” she said hoarsely. “Where are we?” The figure didn’t look up, but made a low, inarticulate noise. A moment later, another figure strode into the room. This person she recognized right away and a terrible understanding of the situation became quite clear to her. Whoever that stooped being was by the door, it was not Severus Snape and the presence of this new individual in the den told her she was in serious trouble.

“Wormtail,” she jeered at him.

“So glad you feel close enough to me to dispense with formality, my dear,” he said carelessly. “And I’m so very pleased to have you here. There’s someone I’d like you to meet.” He gestured to the hunched figure and said, “Ophidia, please greet our guest.”

The figure lifted the black hood that draped over its face and exposed its sallow skin, accented by black eyes that didn’t blink and thin red lips that were curled into a smirk. Jet-black hair, thinning in several spots topped the head and Genevieve didn’t notice any ears at all. She assumed the thing was female, as it wore ornate diamond-patterned robes under the plain black cloak that looked distinctly feminine, but its facial appearance looked viper-like more than human. Its scaly-hands reached up and pointed towards Genevieve and it hissed,” We have great plans sss for you.”

“Ophidia is a very powerful sorceress, girl,” Pettigrew told Genevieve. “It’s best not to resist anything she suggests.”

“ Sssso, Wormtail,” the sorceress began, “had we decided upon the Imperius ssss, then?”

“Yes,” nodded Pettigrew. “The Imperius it shall be.” He leered at Genevieve as Ophidia raised her wand and pointed it at her.”

“ Imperio!” the old hag commanded and Genevieve suddenly felt her freewill drain from her like water from a bathtub.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... He chortled and said, “She doesn’t resist at all! This is going to be like taking candy from a baby! Shall we send her on or can we play with her a bit more, my pet?”

Ophidia twisted her thin red lips into a devilish smile. “More play would be fun, but our Mas ssster mightn’t like it, dear Wormtail. He pushed Genevieve back, as she was still bowed at his feet, and said, “Off you get, girl. You have work to do.”

*****

As Remus Lupin, Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape walked out of Hogwarts castle towards the winged boars at the entrance gates where they would be able to apparate and begin their search for Genevieve, each man was thunderstruck when they saw her appear with a pop, just on the other side of the gateway.

At first they paused, wondering if they had all seen a mirage of sorts. Dumbledore even rubbed his eyes under his half-moon spectacles, thinking they were playing tricks on him.

“An illusion?” Snape muttered in disbelief, but Lupin ran at full speed towards the girl.

“Genevieve!” he cried as he crushed her in an embrace. Genevieve said nothing as Lupin stroked her wavy hair.

Dumbledore and Snape had caught up and looked absolutely relieved.

“You must tell us how you got away, my child,” said Dumbledore. “We were afraid for your life, when Severus came back and told us what had happened.”

“Yes, how did you escape Pettigrew?” inquired Snape.

“Did he hurt you?” whispered Lupin, who was still holding her tightly.

“I’m not hurt,” replied Genevieve flatly. “I don’t know how I got back here.” She looked at Dumbledore and Snape blankly. “Oh, wait. Yes, I apparated.”

Snape and Dumbledore exchanged perplexed glances as Lupin said, “We need to get you to the hospital wing just the same. I’ll feel better once Madam Pomfrey has a look at you.”

In the hospital wing, as Madam Pomfrey was performing the examination of her new patient, Snape, Dumbledore & Lupin stood off to the side, discussing her inexplicable arrival.

“She seemed rather vague, didn’t she?” asked Dumbledore.

“Yes,” agreed Snape.

“She was acting a little odd,” admitted Lupin. “But she’s just been through something very traumatic.” He looked over at the bed where Genevieve lay as Madam Pomfrey poked and prodded her. “She’ll be OK,” he whispered, mostly trying to convince himself of that more than anything else. She has to be, he thought.

As Genevieve lay in the stark, white hospital bed, she had a mini battle raging in her mind. The effects of the draught had made her incapable of blocking the Imperius Curse at first. She’d complied with every command Ophidia had given her, but now she began to question why she did what the hissing voice told her to do, but she still found it almost impossible to resist.

The voice was telling her not to give anyone too much information. “No dis sstinct clues ss to where you were, girl”, it ordered. But Remus is here, she thought. I should tell him. “No!!” bellowed the voice of the hag. So Genevieve obeyed and Madam Pomfrey went on with her examination.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ... PART THIRTEEN:

Remus Lupin felt like he had just been punched in the gut. Why was Genevieve reacting like this? The last thing he wanted to do was to leave her alone, but she was demanding that he go. Maybe some time alone was what she needed. She’d be in the hospital wing until her room was ready anyhow. He’d just give her a little time, and then see her when she settled in. If only he felt right about doing so. He knew Genevieve and he couldn’t, for the life of him, figure out why she was acting the way she had been ever since she’d returned.

He touched her shoulder and whispered, “I’ll see you later, then,” more as a question than a statement. Genevieve still sat looking away from him and didn’t react at all to his touch or his words.

Slowly, he got up from the side of the bed where he’d been sitting and walked away. What in hell did he do to her? he thought as he left the infirmary.

Genevieve reclined back onto her pillow once Lupin had gone. Deep in the darkest corner of her mind, she sobbed. She wanted to resist what that malevolent voice ordered her to do, but for some reason, she couldn’t muster up enough strength when the time came to go against it. It was easier just to agree with it. But she didn’t agree with it. It made her say and do things she would never say or do in a normal state of mind. At the beginning, she felt good as the voice shouted out its instructions, but now that feeling was gone. The dreamy feeling had turned into a nightmare – a nightmare she was incapable of waking up from. And whatever the voice had in store for her next was a horrifying mystery.

*****

Pettigrew grumbled as he stood beside the serpentine sorceress. “Why didn’t you just have her kill Lupin right then and there? You said you could sense they were alone!”

“Do you want this sss done right or not, Wormtail?” Ophidia spat at him in sinister voice.

“Don’t get crotchety with me, darling,” he said to the wizened old hag. “I just thought the whole point of sending her back was to have her kill him. Enlighten me if I am mistaken.”

“You’re not mis ssstaken, my dear Wormtail. I
jus ssst plan on our little marionette wreaking a little more havoc before the deed is sss done.” She cackled hoarsely and stroked his balding head with her scaly hand.

<img src=http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/sh ...
