The room was spacious. Once a classroom and recently converted to sleeping quarters at Dumbledore’s request, the room was elegantly decorated. It had a handsome sleigh bed draped with a stylish coverlet made of burgundy satin with golden accents. Across through room, through an archway, a splendid little sitting area was arranged, complete with a settee and two wingback armchairs. The wall near the sitting area was all bookshelves, filled with hundreds of leather-bound volumes. The armoire near the bed was opened and Genevieve’s clothes had been hung with care inside. Her wand lay on top of the chest of drawers, next to a small trinket box.

“I believe everything has been sent up for you from Hogsmeade,” said Professor McGonagall, “with the exception of your cat. Madam Rosmerta thought it best to keep him with her for the time being. Is there anything else I can get for you? Shall I arrange for the house elves to send you something to eat?”

“I’m not hungry,” said Genevieve as she walked around the room, taking it all in.

“Very well,” replied McGonagall. “If you change your mind, just let someone know.”

Genevieve nodded and McGonagall left her. She sat down on the satiny bedspread and stared at her reflection in the mirror that hung on the inside of the armoire door.

“What’s next?” she whispered as she nervously expected an answer to come transmitting through her brain. Instead, she heard a knock at the door. Professor McGonagall probably forgot to tell me something – like where in the world the bathroom is, Genevieve thought as her eyes scoped the room for another doorway that might have led to a lavatory. She got up from where she sat and creaked the heavy door open. When she saw who stood outside of it, she wanted to slam it shut again. The mêlée in her mind was a million times worse when she was with him. That little part of herself that she’d managed to preserve knew that the reason she’d been cursed was to somehow hurt him and even though she missed being with him, perhaps being away from him would save him. But now the voice was hissing again and it wasn’t telling her to get rid of him. It was telling her to invite him in. Oh, make up your mind, thought Genevieve. PART FIFTEEN:

Lupin entered the room, observing Genevieve cautiously. He didn’t want to say or do anything that might upset her. The time she’d spent alone in the hospital wing had obviously been enough for her since she was now willingly allowing him in, but he still felt the need to be a little guarded around her, at least for the time being.

“Nice,” he said as he got a better look at the room. “Much better than mine. I’ll have to speak to Dumbledore about upgrading.” He smiled at her, hoping to get a smile in return from her, but she merely nodded at him.

“I see Madam Pomfrey sent your wand up,” Lupin said as he noticed it lying on top of the dresser. Then his eye caught the small trinket box sitting next to it. He walked over to the chest of drawers, picked up the box and opened the lid. Nestled inside was the moonstone pendant he’d given her as a Christmas gift the year before. “You weren’t wearing this last night, were you?”

“Wearing what?” asked Genevieve.

Yet again it was as if listening to him speak pulled her out of some sort of reverie. It was like she wasn’t paying attention to the world around her, instead caught up in a daydream. This made him feel very uneasy. This wasn’t normal and he was determined to find out what was bothering her.

“Can we talk?” he asked as he sat down on the side of the sleigh bed. He motioned for her to sit beside him. He was getting to the point where he wanted to ask point-blank what was wrong with her. The frustration of being shut out was getting to him, but he was a patient man and he wasn’t going to let the aggravation of not knowing what was going on get the better of him. That’s not what Genevieve needed.

For Genevieve’s part, she was listening to the voice again, hissing more commands left and right. The one currently being blurted into her mind alarmed her immeasurably.

*****

Ophidia’s trance was interesting watch, if nothing else. Pettigrew viewed as the old hag sat cross-legged on the soil, speaking to Genevieve’s subconscious as she watched the scene at Hogwarts through her mind’s eye.

“Get the pendant around his sss neck,” she said fiercely. “I want him to trans sssform!”

At this, Pettigrew felt the need to interrupt once more, even though he’d been warned repeatedly not to. “Ophidia!” he shouted. “We want her to kill him, not the other way around!”

Ophidia’s head wrenched forward and her eyes cut through him like a blade. “Shut your mouth, Wormtail!” Magically, he was gagged and he muttered beneath his supernatural restraints. “You’ve been warned enough,” she boomed. “I have a plan and you will allow me to carry it out!”

She clamped her black eyes shut and heaved a sigh as she went back into the trance.

<img src=

PART SIXTEEN:

That little part of herself that’d been thrown a life preserver by whatever was left of her own will screamed back at the voice to go to hell. She was using every ounce of what was left of her own spirit to block its influence over her now, but at the moment it wasn’t enough.

“Put the pendant on him, girl! He mus ssst
trans sssform!”

He’ll stop me before I can do it, she tried to rationalize. He knows what happens when he wears it. He’s not stupid!

“Then dis ssstract him,” Ophidia hissed wickedly.

Like a puppet on a string, Ophidia the puppet master forced Genevieve to walk over to the bed and sit down beside Lupin, who was still holding the box. Get rid of it, she thought, yearning to tell him. He didn’t get rid of it, but he did set it down on the bedside table.

“Dis ssstract him, girl!” the voice exclaimed, more forcefully than before.

In general, to touch Lupin was not an unpleasant notion. On the nights he had to be away from her, she drifted off to sleep and dreamt of the feel of him near her and reveled in it, but at the moment she wanted to force herself not to touch him. It was wrong – this evil force was manipulating her and compelling her to harm someone she loved – to trick him by abhorrent means. She didn’t want to lower herself, but the voice was so persuasive.

“Let’s not talk,” she said breathlessly to Lupin as she inched closer to him, sliding her hands underneath his robes. With dynamism he’d never seen her display before, she pushed him on his back and he reclined with his head resting on a satin-covered goosedown pillow. She was usually gentle, but now she kissed him roughly and deliberately. Never one to resist her affections, Lupin kissed her back, but his mind raced as he considered what brought on her sudden rush of passion. Her emotions were running like hot and cold water today – she was downright frigid all morning, but now she was on fire.

Diverted by her sudden desire to be with him, Lupin never noticed her hand slide over to the table. Nor was he aware when she slipped her fingers around the chain of the pendant. However, he became quite aware the moment she slid the silver chain around his neck.

<img src=

It started to tingle and then to sting and he fumbled his hands away from Genevieve to try to pull it off. What had possessed her to do that? he thought as he awkwardly handled the chain. What was she thinking?

It was too late. His hands seized up and he clenched them into fists, struggling to reverse a process that he knew all too well was irreversible. He felt his body wrenching its form from human to beast. He shoved himself onto the floor and scrambled a few feet away, trying to put distance between he and Genevieve. His last coherent thought was that he had to get far away from her, lest he harm her once the transformation was complete – he hadn’t a clue why she’d done that, but there was absolutely no time to figure it out now. His only concern at that point was for her safety.

Genevieve sat on the bed, watching Lupin transform. Within, she felt appallingly guilty. She felt as though manipulating him like that was unforgivable and she wanted to punish herself for her actions. And what was being hissed in her mind sounded like a very harsh punishment indeed.

*****

Ophidia clairvoyantly expressed her desire for Genevieve to allow Lupin to bite her. She mumbled the words aloud as she transmitted them and Pettigrew rubbed his ears, as if he were unsure whether or not he’d heard them correctly. Still unable to speak, he grumbled his disapproval through the magical gag and glared derisively at the old hag.

Ophidia had her own agenda and the feeble Wormtail was not going to stand in her way. Oh, he’d be allowed to enjoy the death of his foe, but after she’d gotten something out of it herself. She wasn’t about to go against the Dark Lord’s word. He’d promised Wormtail the reward of killing Lupin and she was brought on to help him. Wormtail had a certain knack for ineptitude and Lord Voldemort supposed that with a skilled partner, perhaps the job would be done right this time. He never told her that she couldn’t have a little fun first, however, and she’d always wanted her own pet fiend, for merciless killings and such. A werewolf would be such a handy thing to have -- and much more handy since she was under her complete control.

“Get him to bite you, child! You mus ssst become a she-wolf for your mistress sss!”

*****

Somehow, her resolve was strengthening. She was not back up to scratch, but she was not totally powerless anymore, either. One thing she knew was that she wasn’t going to permit herself to be bitten. Lupin was nearly completely converted to werewolf now and her time was short. She stumbled over to the chest of drawers, grabbed her wand and tore across the room to the armoire. She glimpsed the snarling wolf as she closed herself in and shivered in fear as the creature hurled its body against the doors. Lupin wasn’t calm, as he would have been under the influence of the Wolfsbane Potion. He was viciously snarling and scratching at the wood, the smell of human blood not far away causing him to be insane with the hunger to bite. His claws ripped away splinters and shards of the doors and she heard him yowl in pain as a particularly sharp piece of wood wedged into a paw. She screamed out in terror and hoped that someone in the castle could hear the disturbing noises coming from within her room. She screamed out again, this time not from fright. Her disobedience was not going unnoticed and Ophidia was enraged beyond all belief.

<img src=

PART EIGHTEEN:

“Go agains ssst my commands sss, will you?” yelled Ophidia in an imposing tone. “Terrible mis ssstake,
you sssstupid girl!” The old hag was shaking with rage.
“Cruc cccio!” she bellowed, fury apparent in the two voids that were her eyes.

*****

Genevieve fell to the floor of the armoire and shrieked as the pain from the Cruciatus Curse began to set in. Her body was suffering the most unbearable pains. Her skin started to burn, but the sensation didn’t end there. It advanced beneath her skin and it was like flames raced through the arteries and veins that channeled inside her. It was as if her bodily organs were no longer made up of their natural tissues, but of great, fiery masses. She was a blazing inferno, inside and out.

And as if this were not enough to tolerate, a fresh pain began. Her skin, already sweltering from the first bout from the curse, was now being attacked with a different torture. She looked down at herself and she appeared normal, but she could have sworn Lupin the werewolf had gotten in and was tearing her flesh away. She felt as if her arms and legs were being ripped and torn apart. Lupin hadn’t gotten in, of course. He was still growling and scratching wildly on the outside of the armoire. It was just the devastating effects of the Cruciatus that she sensed.

She didn’t realize how loud her screams and sobs were, but they were evidently shrill enough to attract the attention of someone who could help. The door to the chamber swung open when a forceful female voice roared, “ Alohomora!”

Professor McGonagall, followed closely by Professor Snape, exploded into the room, seeking to find out why Genevieve was wailing. Their eyes fixed on the snarling, ferocious werewolf and they reacted together. “ Stupefy!” they said in chorus, as they shot a stunner across the room at the fierce wolf. Lupin the wolf sagged unconscious to the floor and Snape went to drag the animal’s body away from the doors of the armoire so that Professor McGonagall could release the still screaming Genevieve. With her wand, McGonagall opened the doors to the closet. Genevieve’s writhing body tumbled out and the older witch barely caught her in time before she struck the floor. She continued to moan and wail and McGonagall called to Snape to help.

“Severus! Help me calm her!” she said.

Snape, who was scowling at the lifeless werewolf, hurried over. “Why has he transformed tonight?” he inquired in a baffled tone. “It’s not the full moon.” He held Genevieve’s shoulders, but she still continued to thrash and shriek.

“I thought she was frightened at first,” said McGonagall slowly, “but she appears to be in great pain. I think she’s been …” she gulped before she said the next word in a whisper, “… cursed.”

“Cursed?” breathed Snape. “But how?” Just then his eyes caught the sparkle of the silver chain that was almost buried completely in the fur scruff of the wolf’s neck. He lowered Genevieve and rushed over to Lupin. He positioned his hand under the chain, revealing it to McGonagall and said, “Now we know how he transformed.” He tossed the discarded robes over the werewolf and snapped the pendant off of him. “Soon we’ll know why.” Pointing his wand at Lupin, he said “ Ennervate!”

It was quite an odd scene. On one side of the room, Genevieve was having fits of excruciating pain and on the other, Lupin was altering from beast to man. McGonagall was trying everything to calm Genevieve, but nothing was working. She thought to herself that the only thing that would work was a highly skilled curse-breaker and it would take a wizard as capable as Dumbledore for that. Snape watched as Lupin’s conversion was finishing, and his wand was at the ready, just in case he should need it.

Lupin sat wrapped in his tattered robes, fully disoriented and confused. Unscheduled transformations from the moonstone left him feeling dreadful. He looked up at the threatening end of Snape’s wand and glowered.
