Rose breaks down in tears when the Doctor vanishes from the beach. Running to her mother, she cries and gasps for air.

"There, there, girl. Mum's got you now." Jackie did her best to calm and soothe her totally distraught daughter.

Pulling herself together a little, Rose looks at the woman holding her and her face crumples up in grief. Shaking her head, "I couldn't tell 'im! He said he couldn't come get me, that it would cause both universes to collapse.." She sobs, "So I lied. I mentioned the baby, but then told him it was you who was pregnant, Mum. Why did I do that? Now he'll never know!"

Jackie just pulls her daughter to her heart and tucks the girl's head under her own chin, squeezing her eyes shut in shared pain. After a moment she attempts to give her only child some small amount of reassurance, "Perhaps it was instinct, love. You didn't want to cause him to feel even more pain and guilt, knowing that not only was he forced to abandon you, but his own child as well. Whatever the case, I think you did the right thing."

In a muffled voice filled with self loathing, "Then why do I feel like such a monster?"

Patting Rose on the back and making soothing noises, "We'll have none of that now. You were only lookin' out for 'im, like you always have. He'd tell you 'imself you done the right thing, if he could."

Jackie didn't bother to dwell on the irony of her statement, instead suggesting they go back to the jeep. "I've got a thermos of tea in the back, you could do with a hot cuppa, I'm sure."

Rose laughs and hugs her mother tight once more before allowing herself to be drawn back to the vehicle. Looking down at the woman walking arm in arm with her, "Thanks Mum. Don't know what I'd do without you, not really."

Smiling brilliantly up at her daughter again, "And you're not gonna find out either, not for a very long time and neither is my grandchild. Jackie pats Rose's only slightly rounded belly with her free hand.

Rose covers her mother's hand with her own and manages a brittle smile, hating herself for wishing it was the Doctor's instead.
