Okay, Lily Evans thought to herself. In total fairness, he doesn’t realize how rude he’s coming across.

Lily smartened herself a bit, dusting her Hogwarts school robes off so they didn’t look like she’d just been whisked through twenty grates to get there – which, incidentally, she had.

Fancy meeting you here in Diagon Alley, Lily recited in her head. You look smashing, by the way … everyone’s been looking for you all morning … I’d say it’s fate that I ran into you first …

Lily’s feigned conversation continued on in this vein for a moment or two. James Potter continued to look at a rack of Quidditch jerseys in Quality Quidditch Supplies, completely unaware that she stood just a few feet behind him in the shop, mustering up the courage to make her presence known.

“James!” boomed a voice from the entrance of the store. Sirius Black entered with a wide grin across his mischievous face. He noticed the girl standing dumbfounded behind his friend and gave her a fleeting comment. “Lily, you found him … thanks. Remus, Peter and I have been hunting around for ages.” He clapped James around the shoulders and grinned. “Should have known I’d find you here … with your one true love.”

Lily felt her cheeks go red.

“Yeah,” nodded James. He gazed longingly at a racing broom on display in the shop.

Lily rolled her eyes and groaned.

Boys, she thought as she huffed out of the shop.

***

It was the first year her mum and dad had allowed her to come into Diagon Alley on her own. Her sister had laughed as she explained how she’d be getting there.

“Hope you get stuck up there … freak,” Petunia has whispered viciously as their father inspected the chimney.

“I wish you’d let me get a chimney sweep in here, first,” Mr. Evans had said as he peered in. “It looks filthy in there.”

“It won’t matter,” Lily assured him.

“Are you positive you don’t want us to drive you into London, dear?” asked Mrs. Evans. “It’s no trouble …”

“Mum, it’s not everyday the Ministry gives Muggle families access to the Floo Network. They went through all this trouble connecting us … it’d be rude if I didn’t take advantage.” Lily kissed each of her parents goodbye and looked to her sister, whose bony arms were crossed and whose cold eyes glared maliciously. “G’bye, Petunia … see you later!”

“Not if I’m lucky,” Petunia muttered under her breath.

Lily had run into Sirius as soon as she’d reached the Leaky Cauldron. He’d greeted her with his trademark grin … the one she rarely trusted and always knew had a mind of ill-begotten intentions behind it. But for his highly mischievous nature, he was still a good friend. And he was a best friend to James. Surely he’d know where he was. Perhaps she could nonchalantly ask him …

“Lily … ‘lo … you seen Potter around?”

There goes plan A, thought Lily as she tried not to appear too bothered.

“No,” she said aloud. “I’m just here to get my supplies for school … is James even in Diagon Alley today?”

She knew very well James was in Diagon Alley. He’d owled her a week earlier saying that he, Sirius, Remus and Peter were meeting on that very day. He hadn’t mentioned wanting to see her there as well … he hadn’t invited her along … but she had a nagging feeling in her gut. Why would he go to the trouble of writing the exact date he’d be in Diagon Alley if he didn’t want her to be there as well? Then again, if he did want her to be there, wouldn’t he have come right out and said so?

“Well, if you see the scalawag, let him know I’m looking for him, eh?” Sirius said, winking.

“All right,” Lily said. She rolled her eyes as Sirius exited the tavern. Scalawag, she thought. He’s one to talk ... pot calling the kettle black ... or Black calling Potter ... whatever. She laughed as she tried to devise a new strategy.

After a tankard of butterbeer, she’d come up with only one plan … to casually run into James. And in order to do that, she’d have to scour every inch of the Alley. She left a couple Knuts on the table and trudged out of the Leaky Cauldron, towards Diagon Alley.

***

Boys, Lily thought again after having left the Quidditch shop and James Potter openly paying homage to a broomstick. Do they only ever think of pranks and Quidditch?

“Lily!” called a voice after her as she traipsed down the sidewalk. “Wait up!”

She turned around and blinked her green eyes in disbelief. James was darting from the doorway of Quality Quidditch Supplies after her, his disheveled mop of hair was flying as he ran and his glasses were sliding down the bridge of his nose. He stopped when he reached her, panting from the sprint and clutching at a stitch in his side.

“Wanna …” he said, still halfway gasping for air. “Wannaget …”

“Spit it out,” Lily said, trying her best to keep a straight face.

“Wannaget … some … ice cream … with me?” he finally managed. He pushed his glasses back in place and pushed the fringe from his forehead, causing an even worse disaster than before, as it stuck up in the front now as well as the back.

He’s so cute, she thought, still fighting back a smile.

He was still rather breathless, but he nodded. “At Florean Fortescue’s … he has a new flavor.”

“Oh, what’s that?” said Lily coolly, doing her best impression of someone who wasn’t amused.

“Quidditch Nut … it’s raspberry swirled into vanilla ice cream … with Macadamia nuts.” He smiled broadly.

Ah, now I get it … boys don’t just think of pranks and Quidditch. Boys think of pranks, Quidditch and food.

Lily’s casual demeanor faded. Her will to hold back was futile. And her will not only failed her, it completely dissolved. She broke into a fit of giggles. Gales of laughter overcame her. She held her stomach and she didn’t even notice that Sirius had joined them.

“What’d you do, Potter?” he asked seriously. “Show her your …”

“Shut it, you,” James said, glaring.

Lily was practically snorting now.

“Forget it,” said James in an injured tone. “It was just an idea …” He turned and started to walk away, looking quite dejected.

“Wait!” said Lily, catching her breath after her last bout of chuckles. “Wait … it’s not … I mean … I’m sorry I laughed … I wasn’t laughing at you … it’s just … Quidditch Nut …”

She felt her stomach start to shake as she spoke the words. Even James began to smirk.

“I guess it is kind of … funny.” He smiled wider as he considered it, then began to laugh. Lily joined in again.

“Quite droll,” said Sirius, looking back and forth between Lily and James. “I just don’t get your sense of humor.” He scratched his head as he observed his friends going into hysterics over an ice cream flavor. “Meet you back at the Leaky Cauldron when you’ve calmed down, eh?”

James tried to nod, though it was difficult while he was laughing so violently.

“If you … think … that’s funny …” he added as he chortled, “you’ll … really love … Chizpurfle Crunch!"

And the two continued on to the ice cream shop, laughing as they talked about all the giggle-inducing flavors Florean Fortescue had to offer.

Author's Note: I sort of stole Quidditch Nut from Baskin-Robbins, though they call it Baseball Nut. ;)
