Author's Note: i wrote this as a songfic a long long time ago, and today, I heard the song again, and the dreaded plot bunny showed up and made me revise it, change it and add to it. Enjoy

Wherever You Will Go


Songfic based upon the song Wherever You Will Go by The Calling. I own nothing. The Calling gets credit for the tune, Jason Katims, Melinda Metz and 20th Century Fox get credit for Roswell.

It took years, but the podsters and their friends finally mastered a way to harness energy and use it to open the wormhole. Liz, Kyle Maria and Jesse know that the others are leaving. All of them except for Liz and Max have said their tearful goodbyes.
Max climbed through Liz’s window and watched the woman he loved while she slept. He wanted nothing more than to stay with her forever, but he knew that he couldn’t. He couldn’t stay, any more than he could bring her with him back to Antar.
Max walked softly across the floor and slipped a CD into Liz’s CD player. He placed an envelope next to it, and taped a piece of paper to the CD player. Finished, Max moved quietly over by her bed, and allowed himself one final look at the woman he would love forever.
He knelt down beside Liz, and pressed a kiss against her cheek.
“I love you,” he whispered.
“Max?” Liz asked, sleepily. She turned and stretched languidly, and fell back to sleep without ever really waking up. Max let out his breath in a soft whoosh, his heart pounding at his close call.
“I will love you always,” he whispered.
Max turned and crept quietly across the floor. When he reached the window, he paused and allowed himself one last look at Liz. His eyes filled with tears, and he turned and climbed back out the window, not noticing the small glowing handprint that emanated from Liz’s abdomen.
Liz woke up to find a note taped to her CD player. She reached out and grabbed and read the words “Play Me” that were written on it. Next to the CD player was an envelope, and Liz reached to grab it, her hands trembling. She knew what it was even before she opened it. She hit the play button on the CD player, and the sound sounds of guitar music filled her room.

So lately, been wonderin', who will be there to take my place
When I'm gone, you'll need love to light the shadows on your face
If a greater wave shall fall, and fall upon us all
Then between the sand and stone, could you make it on your own?

Dear Liz, I don’t want to leave you, but I have to. I’m supposed to be their King. What kind of ruler am I to leave my people to fight alone? I should be there with them, but I want to be with you. I love you so much. I can’t imagine being apart from you, but I know you are strong. You will go on without me.

I want so much to stay here with you and have our own life together, one that is safe, where we can always be together. A life where we are not always looking over our shoulders wondering where the next attack will come from. I want us to grow old together Liz, to spend eternity together

I want to say I’ll come back to you Liz, but I can’t make that promise. I don’t know what I am going to find when we go back, or even if we’ll make it back alive. But know this, I will love you forever, and you will always be in my heart.

(3 years later)
The man walked through the park, enjoying the sites and sounds of the children playing. He stopped when he heard a particularly bright giggle. He turned in the direction of the sound and saw a small family playing together in the grass. The father tossed a small boy up in the air and caught him, sending the boy into rapturous giggles again.

“Higher Daddy, higher!” The boy laughed. “I wanna fly to the stars.”

“Kyle, be careful, you might drop him,” said the woman with a laugh.

The man felt his heart clench when the woman turned in his direction. She was beautiful. Her long brown hair cascaded down her back, framing her face, and drawing attention to her dark brown eyes. When she caught him watching, she smiled at him and whispered something to the man.

The man placed the boy carefully on the grass and went to stand next to the woman. The young boy darted away and ran towards the man.

“Hi there,” said the man, kneeling down to look the boy in the eyes. What he saw there, confirmed his hopes and fears.

“Hi, I’m not supposed to talk to strangers, but you’re not a stranger are you?”

“No, I don’t think I am,” said the man. “You’d better get back to your Mom and Dad before they start to worry.”

He watched the small boy run back to his family, and jump into his mother’s arms. She hefted him onto her hip and watched as he turned and walked away. He stated to walk away, stopped and turned and looked back at the family again.

Max gave a small wave of goodbye to his son, and the only woman he would ever love and left Roswell. This time, forever.

Okay, my original fb on this one was lost back on ezboard I imagine, and that just won't do, so here it is again. That story was so, so, so very poignant... beautifully written but sad in the end, at least to me, because Max left again and Liz never knew he was there, and she was married to Kyle, presumably. The wording was perfect though, and the song was weaved in so well:

i can't remember if i gave you feedback over at ezboard. so here it is for sure.

wow. your song choice was brillant. he knew. he wanted her to go with kyle. thats awesome. esp with the hystory the three of them had. they probably healed each other. and kyle knows he'll never take max's place and he's ok with that. just as liz will never take the place of tess/isabel. so thats max's son. and his son recogizes him. i can't believe he just left him though. but things would probably get more complicated if he didn't. liz probably knows he was there.
