Changing The Future, Change The Past

Michael was taking his turn driving the van. They had been traveling for two months now, around the country, never staying in one place for more than a few days. It was too early to be feeling safe anywhere. They just kept moving. It was late at night and everyone was asleep except for Michael. He was watching Maria sleep until something in front of him drew his eye. A bright flash of light appeared and Michael swerved the van to avoid hitting whatever it was. He got the van back under control and pulled over a little ways ahead. He took a deep breath and looked around to see if everyone was ok. No one else has stirred so Michael felt safe enough to leave the van for a minute to see if he had hit anything or figure out what the light was from. As he walked slowly back, he saw a man standing there. The man turned around and looked at Michael without moving. Michael did not recognize him until he got a little closer and then he stopped dead in his tracks. “Max?” he asked, bewildered.

Max gave a half smile and uttered breathlessly, “Hi Michael.”

“What… what the hell? You were just inside the van, I saw you. How did…” Michael kept babbling confusedly, not knowing what was going on.

Max scratched his head and looked puzzled. “Well I’m not your Max. I am Max from 13 years in the future.”

Michael started to laugh hardily. “No way. We are not having another Future Max episode. And aren’t you supposed to visit Liz? Maybe convince her that you are actually supposed to be together and Tess was an evil whore who ruined all of our lives?” He started to walk back towards the van but Max grabbed him and spun him around.

“I can’t tell Liz anything because that means I would have to tell her everything. That the world is about to explode where I am from, that our enemies came for us even though we changed everything, that everyone but me is dead! I thought maybe if I could come to you, we could actually make it right!” Max was indignant and sad because his world was lost.

“Max, what do you mean? The world ends in 13 years even though we changed the future?” Michael was so confused. His head was spinning from lack of sleep, disbelief, and something else brewing beneath the surface.

Max answered wearily. “Yes. Tess wasn’t the catalyst we thought she was. And as you can see, she is gone anyways and we’re on the run. So things are different and this time we need to change it completely.”

“How?” Michael began to lean closer to Future Max

Future Max leaned closer to Michael until their lips were almost touching. “I need you to go back.”

Michael jumped back in surprise. “WHAT? What am I supposed to do? And how do you know that it is going to change the past enough to actually make a difference?”

“Because I’m not going to save Liz that day in the Crashdown.” Future Max said resignedly and walks a bit away from Michael.

“But she is the love of your life. How can you not be there?”

Max spun around and screams, “No she isn’t. I am so sick of hearing that! I played into that lie to make everyone happy but she is not the one I want to be with.”

Michael’s brain was starting to come out of its haze. He walked closer to Future Max and turned him around to face him. “Then who do you want to be with, Max?”

Future Max looked up to Michael with pure love in his eyes and strains to say, “You. It has always been you.” Future Max moves closer and kisses Michael. Michael starts to kiss him back and opens his mouth to allow Future Max the exploration he wants. Future Max lets his tongue plunge in and sweep around. Soon the men are fighting for dominance but for once, Future Max gives it up to Michael, allowing him control. The two slowly break apart after a few minutes and Michael realizes there is a difference in their surroundings.

“Where are we Max?”

“We’re back in 1999. September 18 to be exact.” Future Max and Michael look over to see Past Max and Michael walking around Roswell. Suddenly the scene stops.

Michael looks around, confused. “Did you pick up the ability to control time in the future?”

Future Max smiles. “Actually I did. We all could do it but you were always the best at it.” Future Max then turns more serious in look and speech. “Now is the moment of truth.” He waves his hand over Michael to transform him into his 1999-self. “Are you ready?”

“Well what happens to you and me when I do this? And what exactly am I doing?”

“You are going to take your past self’s place and take me to eat somewhere other than the Crashdown. I can’t be in the restaurant when Liz is shot because if I am there, I will save her. But if I’m not, then what am I supposed to do? And us? We disappear. Once we go somewhere else and walk past the Crashdown, you and I will disappear and your past self will take your place.”

“Well what about the future? Are we going to be together?” Michael has such hope in his eyes and voice for that to happen.

Max shrugs his shoulders. “I guess that depends on how smart we are this time around.” He kisses Michael and pushes him towards his past self. “Go and save us all.”

Michael looks at him for a moment longer and then walks up to Past Max. Time starts again and Future Max hides behind a tree while Michael and Past Max walk along.

“So Michael where should we go for lunch today? The Crashdown?” Max says like a giddy schoolgirl.

Michael looks back towards the tree and smiles, even though his heart hurts him. “I’m more in the mood for Mexican. Let’s go to Senor Chow’s.” The boys walk together past the Crashdown, soon passing it on their way to the restaurant.

A/N I apologize if I got the date of the shooting wrong. I checked by watching the first part of the pilot and it starts on September 23rd and she died five days before that so I think it is the 18th, not the 17th. If I’m wrong, lemme know and I will change it.
