Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. – Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs was a pretty wise man. I’m loving this quote today for a variety of reasons, but one especially hits close to home. My children will be heading off to college in the fall, and are filled with the typical concerns that face every young person at this time in their lives. The biggest one being “what do I want to major in?” It’s a tough question, and I have my own ideas as to what they should major in. Of course, my ideas do NOT dovetail nicely with their intended majors at this time.
I’ve always said from the moment my daughter could make noise that she should be a lawyer. That child is a master at arguing and twisting things around so that you don’t know if you’re coming or going. She’s also one of the most honest and ethical people I’ve ever met. As a lawyer and some day Supreme Court Justice, she would be “The BOMB!” However, she has no interest in the law, other than knowing what the laws are so she doesn’t break them.
She’s listening to her inner voice and doing a darn good job of it. But a lot of people let their own inner voice get drown out by the voices of their parents, teachers and friends. Sometimes, it’s even easier to listen to the voices of others rather than listen to yourself and make the difficult choices.
It can be a harder path for sure, but it’s the best path. Don’t let anybody else convince you of how things should be. Listen to your inner voice.
