The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
When I picked out this quote last Sunday, I was all full of great things to write. I should have written them down because when I opened it up this
morning, I was drawing a blank. That’ll teach me to procrastinate, lol. In the poem Invictus by Willialm Ernest Henley, the last stanza says:
I love it because it that no matter what, you are in charge of your own fate. In this world, where so many things seem like they are out of our control, it’s nice to know that there is one thing we can control, even if it seems like we don’t. The kids I work with feel like they are stuck, and that they are destined to live the same lives as their parents. Mom and/or Dad do drugs, they do drugs. Mom and/or dad didn’t graduate high school, they aren’t going to either. It’s hard to get them to understand that yeah, up to a point, you’re stuck living the life your parents have chosen. But eventually their comes a time when you get to make a choice and do things differently. You don’t have to use drugs, you can study and pass your classes. College can be an option. I realize my students lives are a bit extreme, but the same could be said for anybody. There is always a way to change your situation, and it’s up to you to make that decision. If you’re not happy with who you are, and what you’re doing, change direction. Ask for help, it’s out there. You can change your destiny and be the person you wish to be.
