Instead of dwelling on negative thoughts, cause your mind to dwell on peace and joy. – Ernest Holmes
Ahh – how simplistic some of these quotes make everything seem. Not dwelling on negative thoughts is probably one of the hardest tasks you can undertake. We are constantly bombarded with bad news via radio, television, internet and newspapers. Coupled with that, in our daily life, we have both good and bad things happening. And if you’re like me, the
more you try NOT to focus on something, the more you end up focusing on it.
I think the secret is to NOT ignore them. Certainly, we don’t want to dwell on them. Instead I think the secret is to acknowledge the negative thoughts. They are there and they do exist. Acknowledge them and the replace them with more positive thoughts. If you’ve just found out you’ve lost your job, acknowledge that it’s happened, and immediately replace it with the thought of you working in your dream job, with your dream salary – then start sending out the resumes! If you have suffered the loss of someone you love, don’t try to force yourself to forget it or move on, take the time to mourn that loss, and then celebrate the life they led and revel in the happiness and joy they brought to the world.
Negativity doesn’t help us, but it does exist. We can’t get away from it, but we have the power to not let it consume our lives. Acknowledge the negatives and then fill yourself with positivity and allow it to replace the negative thoughts.
