The One Who Dies With the Most Toys Doesn’t Always Win

Find ecstasy in life; the mere sense of living is joy enough. ~ Emily Dickinson

We are a society that craves the ownership of things.  I’m just as guilty of it as everybody else.  We don’t even have to want huge things like mansions or super expensive cars.  Think about your cell phone.  A cell phone is a tool to make phone calls.  That is really all you need it to do.  Yet many of us have phones that are akin to mini computers.  I’m having fits right now because my phone is having issues and isn’t working correctly.

As long as our basic needs are met, we should be good to go, but we’re not.  We always want more.  That’s not necessarily a bad thing.  The desire for more provides us with the impetus to work and excel.  I think, however, that when we lose sight of all the great things around us, that’s when we lose out.  We need to find our joy in our friends and family and in ourselves, not in the things that we have.  The things are the icing on the cake of life.  So I’m going to sit here and yes, be cranky that my phone is having issues, but I’m also going to remember all the good, great and wonderful things that make up my life; good friends, fantastic children, food, clothing and a job that allows me to make a difference in the lives of others.
