It’s NOT All About Me, or You!

A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.- The Buddha

I tease my kids and my students a LOT saying no, you need to do this because it’s “all about me!”  The truth of the matter is, I know it’s not all about me,  at least I know that most of the time.  But as I look around my school, my town, and the world via the news and the internet, I’m starting to see that a lot of people really do believe that it’s all about them.  I’m starting to believe in fact that it may actually be what’s wrong with the world.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a LOT of people who do good works in this world, but there aren’t enough.  Can you imagine what this world would be like if everybody put the good of others ahead of themselves?  If they worked to help others, and performed charitable works?

I’m not talking about giving up all your worldly goods and living in poverty, but think about it. I bet if everybody that could, worked together, there wouldn’t BE any poverty.  I know, however, that it will never happen.  Our own human nature precludes it.  We seemed to be genetically programmed to win, and to achieve success at all costs.  It would be great if everybody could find some sort of balance between winning and doing good works.  I think if we could, the world as we know it would be dramatically different and incredibly happy.
